Venice Fishing Report
INSHORE – The wind has made offshore fishing tough, but when anglers can get out they are finding that the bottom bite hasn’t suffered much. Grouper and Snapper are turning up within 12 miles this week. Rocky structure on the bottom will be your best place to target them using live bait. Keep in mind you may need to take a look at the regulations on your Pro Angler App to determine what you can harvest. Cut live bait will bring the most success. The Kings can be found within 20 miles. Anglers are looking for bait balls on the bottom for the best place to cast their live bait setup. If all else fails, anglers can almost always find Permit swimming around so it’s always a good idea to keep silver dollar sized Blue Crabs on board!

OFFSHORE – It’s been a bit tough to get a handle on the fishing throughout the area this week. With all the recent weather the fish are a bit confused and the bite hasn’t been as easy as we would hope. The ol’ reliables are still hanging around. Redfish continue to bite, but are preferring live bait. Port Charlotte has been a particularly active area, especially throughout the harbor. There is a nice variety of fish throughout the harbor area and anglers aren’t having trouble hooking some of them as bycatches. Snook are hit or miss depending on where you are. Most are over slot and a lot of fun to target, finding them has been the challenge this week. Using live bait in the passes has been productive overall. Fishing as natural presentations as possible has been the best strategy this week. They are already starting to improve as we see more consistent weather. It’s been no surprise that Sheepshead are holding up on structure. Mackerel are beginning to make their way in. Permit are schooled up and spread over several areas, and Tarpon are hiding in some of the rivers. These species haven’t been as hot as we would like to see however we have no doubt they will heat up very soon.

INSHORE – Things are turning on and the fish have shown up. Inside, Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are doing very well. They are in the 17-22 inch range taking jerk baits or live Shrimp under a popping cork. Nice Snook (Snook, Common) to 26 inches are also turning up and they are providing great action for anglers.
OFFSHORE – The reefs are holding nice Vermillion Snapper and Mangroves (Snapper, Gray & Snapper, Vermillion). Great Cobia have also been landed by trolling. They are schooled up and sometimes we will get multiple hits at the same time. Head to roughly 40 feet of water and troll 20 feet down at 4 miles per hour to find them as they make their way back through. Grouper (Grouper, Gag & Grouper, Red) are also swimming the bottom providing a decent catch and release bite. Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) have also been caught in the same 40 foot area.

Venice Fishing Report
INSHORE – Resident Tarpon are cruising the flats. There has been a few scattered in the 20 Foot Holes throughout the Harbors, as well as PGI Canal and Alligator Creek Reef to name a few of the hot areas Fishin’ Franks provided this week. They are taking a variety of baits from Marco through Venice however the best bite has come out of Port Charlotte.
Along the bushes and oyster bars we are seeing great Redfish and Snook. Moving water is the key to finding them. With the fluctuating temperatures the Reds are preferring live bait such as Pilchards along with a variety of soft plastics. The Snook are becoming a bit lethargic to the North with the drop in temperature however they should heat up well once we see some consistently nice weather.
As usual Sheepshead are holding up on their typical structures taking halved Shrimp on a 4 or 6 hook wit a Split Shot.
OFFSHORE – The offshore has had quite the mixed bag of fish this week. On the bottom, the bite has been successful for those targeting Grouper, Amberjack and Snapper. The Snapper aren’t picky, so don’t worry too much about what you are sending down to them. They seem to be providing a consistent bite no matter what. Grouper are a bit tougher. They are preferring live bait. Amberjack are now closed, but if you are looking for an active catch and release bite then this is your fish.
Closer to the top anglers have spotted Bonito, Blackfin, Spanish and Kings scattered from Marco to Venice. The numbers aren’t outstanding, but they’ll all be a good fish to target if you’re looking for a bit of a challenge.

Venice Fishing Report
INSHORE – Despite the rough weather there are plenty of areas to fish this week that are producing well. Juvenile and sub adult Tarpon are moving out of the rivers. Snook are still in the river at Fort Myers but most are small with few legal sizes. Further North, Punta Gorda Isle Canals are loaded with juvenile Tarpon and a good variety of Snook. They were beginning to fire up however the recent cold front may have them a bit more scattered and lethargic until favorable conditions return. This week the hottest Snook and Tarpon have turned up out of the Port Charlotte area. Check out the Pro Angler App report for more details.
Redfish are sporadic up and down the coast. Typical areas are holding fish that are taking Sardines or Shrimp. Trout are also hit or miss but prefer a popping cork combo, scented plastic on a jig or can even be caught on the drift. Occasionally you’ll find Jacks or Ladyfish mixed in. They are heating up just in time for the bait run. Mullet, Whitebait, Threadfins and Pinfish are just beginning to make an appearance.
OFFSHORE – The bite has been tough offshore this week as many anglers have had a difficult time finding a weather window to head out. Prior to the front the Snapper, Amberjack, Kings and Tuna were all beginning to heat up and provide steady action for anglers. This week we are seeing a different picture. Snapper are still around however the closer, nearshore bite is a bit more successful. Heading out to 40 to 60 feet using live bait is your best bet. Some are even finding limits of Lanes towards Venice. Grouper and scattered Amberjack have been mixed in and caught while targeting the Snapper.
Kings are a lot closer this week and can be found less than 18 miles out. Spanish Mackerel may be caught as well. We expect the cold weather to have pushed them out by next week.

Venice Fishing Report
INSHORE – Snook season is underway in the gulf fish of all sizes have been cooperating despite an unseasonal weather pattern. There have been a lot of anglers finding success in the Caloosahatchee River near Fort Myers as well as Bull Bay near Boca Grande. You should be able to get by throwing small Shrimp and bait patterns. Our best report for Redfish came from Fishin Franks in Port Charlotte this week. You can find them swimming the 41 bridge to Eagles Cut. Potholes, Sandbars and cutoffs are fishing well. DOA in white or Shad on a weedless hook is working well to fish them as if you are fishing for Bass. Snook are mixed in. Fishin Franks had a lot to say about the fishing around Port Charlotte and Boca Grande this week, you can view their full report in the Pro Angler App. Your typical fish can almost always be found throughout the area. Sheepshead are thick in Marco, Sanibel and Bonito. Pompano are swimming the outside bars with Cobia and Flounder. Seatrout can be caught around mouths of Cutoffs taking Shrimp while Black Drum are holding up on bridges and structure in the harbor.

OFFSHORE – If you wanted to target fish that can’t be found year round, this is the time to fish Southwest Florida! Good sizes of Kingfish have been caught off of Naples and starting into Sanibel. We expect Sanibel and Port Charlotte to fire up as they have not yet done so. Nearshore wrecks and reefs (30-35 FOW) have been producing Cobia, decent sized Cobia at that. Most anglers have been using artificial Eels on a chartreuse jighead. Moving out to deeper water anglers can expect a reasonable Amberjack bite 5-6 miles from shore.

Venice Fishing Report
INSHORE – Sheepshead are holding up on docks taking halved Shrimp on split shot rig. Lots of keepers have been caught around Marco. Pompano are steady and varied size, they are taking live Shrimp or Pink Banana jigs. Alternatively orange colors are working particularly well in Marco. They are providing a consistent bite through to Venice. You can also find them in the passes around Sanibel taking Shrimp. Key areas to look have been in roughly 3-4 feet of water on moving tide.
Snook have been caught on Shrimp or larger artificials in Marco. In Gasparilla Sound – Charlotte Harbor, the East and West Wall, PGI and Port Charlotte Canals are also producing.
Trout are on grass flats taking Shrimp under a cork or bounced on bottom. The key is finding clean water. In Port Charlotte they are outside the bars in 3-5 ft on both the East and West wall. Trout have been caught through to Venice.
Scattered Tarpon are in the pass. You can also find them in Bull Bay reaching 120 pounds. Search the deep holes to find them.
Spanish Mackerel have been caught taking jigs in both Sanibel & Port Charlotte. Anywhere you fish in Southwest Florida, you will find a scattered Redfish bite.

OFFSHORE – There has been some Amberjack, Kings and Blackfin Tuna caught offshore this week. King Mackerel have been biting on the troll this week from Marco almost all the way to Venice. A lot of boats have had good luck pulling Bluerunners up to 20 miles out, just keep an eye out for birds and bait. Keeper Grouper have been consistent in 45 to 60 ft of water from Sanibel up to Boca Grande and again to Sarasota on cut Herring. Snapper have put on a decent show. They have been taking a variety of baits this week including Shrimp, cut Herring, Squid, Pilchards or Finger mullet. Range wise, you’ll want to start at 7 miles out 15 miles. If you’d prefer to fish in closer on account of the seas, or you like Sheepshead, well, there’s Sheepshead on a lot of the nearshore wrecks and reefs. They taste great and are usually pretty forgiving in regards to your presentation. Just drop some small Shrimp or Fiddler Crab to the bottom and they shouldn’t have a problem biting.

Venice Fishing Report
INSHORE – It’s definitely a Snook’s time to shine this week. They are waking up inshore from Marco Island to Port Charlotte and they are hungry! With the Whitebait running they are on the move and in search of some live Shrimp on a hook! They seem to be just about anywhere from islands to channels to canals. It has been difficult not to run into them. Trout are also consistent into this week. They are swimming their typical Spring patterns already and are also loving live bait. The sizes have been great so far. Focus on the shallower water for the best bites!
Structure is holding a variety of species to be caught. Mangrove Snapper, Sheepshead and Jack Crevalle are mixed throughout the inshore water. The sizes are nothing great quite yet however we expect them to provide some great action for anglers in the coming weeks.
If all else fails you can always find a few Redfish inshore. This week they are preferring artificial swim baits and MirrOdines. Scattered Black Drum can be found alongside, especially in the Boca Grande and Port Charlotte area. Towards Venice a handful of Pompano and Spanish Mackerel are moving in.

OFFSHORE – Offshore fishing has proved a bit tough for anglers this week. Scattered Tripletail are beginning to show up. Live bait is your best bet to hit them. We expect the bite to heat up in the next few weeks.
The bottom bite is still consistent despite weather conditions. Mangrove Snapper and Greater Amberjack can be found on reefs along with a few Gag Grouper. The Amberjack are the most consistent catch. Everything seems to be nearshore with an extremely quiet offshore bite.

Venice Fishing Report
INSHORE – Marco Island and Naples have had a good showing of Pompano in the passes and channels. The grass flats have been producing Trout. Redfish have been caught around the bushes just off of deeper water.
From Naples up to Estero Bay inshore and nearshore structures are producing a decent Sheepshead bite. The Sheepshead haven’t been too picky about time of day as long as you put some bait in front of them. Up into Sanibel the Sheepshead continue to bite well on bridges and pilings. Mangrove Snapper and Sheepshead have also been caught in the passes. If you are looking to target big Snook you can head up the Caloosahatchee River. Try throwing big swimbaits or Mullet.
There is still an abundance of juvenile Tarpon in the region. The best spots are PGI canal and the Caloosahatchee River. Boca Grande Pass, Captiva Pass and surrounding beaches have been good for anyone wishing to catch Whiting or Pompano.
OFFSHORE – The artificial reefs in Southwest Florida have been fishing well for Cobia anglers. The Cobia haven’t been locked down to a specific depth, although you’ll want to start in at least 30 feet of water for some better sizes. From Sanibel to Venice, the most productive artificials seem to be anything eel like by the Hogy Lure company.
Big Gray Snapper, aka Mangrove Snapper, have been hauled off of nearshore reefs from Sanibel up to Boca Grande. Amberjack, Amberjack, Amberjack! Everyone is fired up as these prized bottom fish are being caught throughout Southwest Florida on artificial reefs and wrecks from 40-80 ft of water. The bigger boats have been finding big Ajs past 80 ft although this is mostly to the North of Port Charlotte. There has also been good Red Grouper fishing about 25 miles off of Venice. You’ll also get into some Lane Snappers and catch and release Red Snappers there too.
For anyone wanting to get out and target Permit, boats heading out of Boca Grande have been getting some decent fish in 50 ft of water.

Venice Fishing Report
INSHORE – It’s very windy out there today and the water is pretty stirred up. There is a bit of Red Tide in the water and to the South. There are still some nice Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) to be caught using Rapala Jerkbaits. Bluefish, Jacks (Jack, Crevalle) and tons of Ladyfish have been turning up in the morning on a mild incoming tide. The fish were lethargic in the still water but turned on with the movement.
OFFSHORE – Way out, from 15-25 miles, we are seeing great Lane Snapper (Snapper, Lane) and a few Red Grouper (Grouper, Red) on the bottom. Reports of Cobia have been slim. There are not many pelagic fish around so far this week. We hope to see Kings (Mackerel, King) move back through in March along with Bonito (Bonito, Little Tunny) moving in for closer boats.

Venice Fishing Report
INSHORE – It’s been too rough to head offshore for the most part. Conditions are just now improving enough to get out for the weekend. Inside we are seeing nice Trout taking live Shrimp or jerkbaits. They are hanging out in 5-7 ft of water. Ladyfish, Jacks (Jack, Crevalle) and the occasional Bluefish have shown up. Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) are still inside. The deeper water bridge pilings are holding Drum (Drum, Black). Pompano (Pompano, Florida) are swimming the sandy flats taking live Shrimp or a small jig dragging it along the bottom.
OFFSHORE – We expect to see Kings (Mackerel, King) caught while coming back through when anglers can get out. Red Grouper (Grouper, Red) will likely move into shallower water for the season. The occasional Little Tunny (Bonito, Little Tunny) will be caught along with schools of Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) that will move in any time. We hope to see conditions improve soon so we can take advantage of the bite!

INSHORE – It’s been windy recently however that has not stopped the bite but has definitely slowed things down. The water is a bit milky through the inlets to the intracoastal. When the water clears up and the wind quits we suspect that the bite will be on fire, especially with the lack of pressure. Bluefish, Ladyfish and a few small Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) have been caught on a 6 hour day trip. Jerkbaits and live Shrimp were working well to hook the Trout. Prior to this system there were some Jacks (Jack, Crevalle) and Flounder (Flounder, Southern) biting as well.

INSHORE – Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are doing well. They are from 16-20 inches. Jerkbaits and live Shrimp are the key to catch them. Bluefish are inside along with Ladyfish, Jacks (Jack, Crevalle) and a few Flounder (Flounder, Southern). None of the Flounder are big doormats yet. The water temperature should cool down which may bring more of the Flounder in.
OFFSHORE – From 90-120 ft of water the Red Grouper (Grouper, Red) are biting with tons of Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater) in huge sizes. Nearshore is slow. The occasional catch and release Grouper (Grouper, Gag & Grouper, Black) have been caught. Cobia and Bonito (Bonito, Little Tunny) are slow. There is a lot of trolling being done with few catching.

INSHORE – Not much has changed inside from last week. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted), Pompano (Pompano, Florida), Jacks (Jack, Crevalle), Kings (Mackerel, King) and Bluefish are all here to be caught. Live Shrimp is best around the edge of the intracoastal where it drops off. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal tons of information and tips to catch! OFFSHORE – We are catching our offshore fish from 70-110 ft of water. We’ve been hooking a lot of Gags (Grouper, Gag) but they are catch and release. Kingfish (Mackerel, King) and the occasional Cobia have been caught out there too. We’ve also been catching some Lanes (Snapper, Lane) on good structure. BAIT REPORT – From 0-4 miles out there is tons of Mullet schooling. They are getting ready to move in and spawn. Cap’t Dave Wright 517-736-4212 captaindavewright@gmail.comDecember 30, 2016

INSHORE – Inside, Things are doing well. Pompano (Pompano, Florida) are turning up in good sizes along with Mackerel (Mackerel, Spanish) as well as tons of Ladyfish and Jacks (Jack, Crevalle). They are loving live Shrimp in 10-12 ft of water. Thanks for another great year anglers! Pro Angler is looking forward to seeing all of your great catches in 2017! OFFSHORE – The Snapper (Snapper, Gray & Snapper, Lane), Grouper and Blackfin (Tuna, Blackfin) are biting from 70-110 ft of water. Nearshore from 15-35 ft we are seeing a lot of bait but not a lot of predatory fish. There are a few Gags (Grouper, Gag) hanging around there as well. The water is still too warm to move them in. INSHORE – Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are biting inside. There are still some catch and release Snook (Snook, Common). Bluefish are biting too. Fish are decent sizes and taking size 10 Rapalas on the edge of the intracoastal right where it drops from the flats down to 4-10 ft. The Blues have really been putting up a good fight. Wishing you a Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays from the Pro Angler Team! OFFSHORE – 4 miles out we are seeing massive Grouper (Grouper, Gag) up to 22 lbs. You can fish for Kings (Mackerel, King) in the area as well. Trolling with Spoons has been productive. Big Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater) are biting in 100 ft of water over the reefs and wrecks. They are up to 85 lbs. Keep in mind they are catch and release until January. Cap’t Dave Wright 517-736-4212 captaindavewright@gmail.comDecember 15, 2016
Venice Fishing Report
INSHORE – Fishing is improving as the Red Tide dissipates. It has displaced a few fish along with the full moon and changing tides. They are beginning to move back in though. Go out, pick an area to fish, if you don’t catch anything you can move to a new area. You’ll have to cover some water to find fish. There is a decent amount of Redfish (Drum, Red) on the East side and West wall. Rat Reds are in all the creeks. Most of the keeper Reds are just found as singles or doubles. Smaller sizes are schooled in the pockets. Circle hooks will better to use for them. There is a ton of Bonnetheads (Shark, Bonnethead) which is a good sign. Find them in Turtle bay, the flats and Cape Hayes. Sheepshead are moving into the intracoastal. Placida, Pine Island, Bull Bay and Turtle Bay are holding good fish. They are slowly moving into the upper harbor as the water temperature cools. Snook (Snook, Common) are biting well now that they are closed! Typical. Anglers can catch and release them but not many anglers target them at this time of year. The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) activity is a bit off as the water is not cool enough yet. Most of the fish caught are from the outside edges of the bar on the East side in Turtle Bay. 3 ft of water is best as a few legal sizes are being caught in that depth. They are loving soft plastics such as DOA Shad Tail and MirrOlures. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish listed below the report for more angling tips and tricks! OFFSHORE – Offshore has been on fire! We are seeing Cobia, Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater), Kings (Mackerel, King), Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) and a few oddball Blackfin Tuna (Tuna, Blackfin) in 55-70 ft of water. The water is cleaning up around 40 ft. Ferry off of Stump Pass is holding some better water as well. Tripletail are on the Crab Trap Buoys. The fish are nice sizes up to 8 lbs. There aren’t a lot of fish but there are good quality fish when you find them. Snapper (Snapper, Gray), Grunts (Grunt, White) and Sheepshead are doing well from 3-12 miles out. The bite is great and we are seeing some positive activity out there. Cap’t Dave Wright 517-736-4212 captaindavewright@gmail.comDecember 9, 2016

INSHORE – Inside we are seeing Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and large Bluefish. Blues are up to 4 lbs and are lots of fun on light tackle. Xraps in size 10 jerked and slashed is the ticket to catch them. They are schooling up so if you hook one, stick around because you’ll more than likely catch a few. OFFSHORE – There has been a bit of wind this week however anglers are still catching Kings (Mackerel, King) in 32 ft of water. They are roughly 20 ft down taking 20 ft Xrap diving Rapalas. Ghost White has been the best color for us this week. Cap’t Dave Wright 517-736-4212 captaindavewright@gmail.comDecember 2, 2016

INSHORE – Snook (Snook, Common) are on the beach this week. They are taking spoons and jigs for great sizes. The moving tide in the morning is the best time to head out. INSHORE – We have been seeing a lot of weather in this area as of late. The jetties have been closed at this point. There hasn’t been much on reports as anglers are staying off the water. There has been a lot of flooding as well. Reds (Drum, Red) and Snapper (Snapper, Gray) are expected to fire back up after the system passes through. Bonito and Wahoo were swimming the offshore and we expect them to continue as well. They were in 230ft of water and they should move in closer after the water cools down from the storm. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – With this system pushing through most of Florida, we expect a lot of wind and tough conditions. Most of the fishing from last week should fire back up once the storm passes. Expect to see the rainfall cool off inshore waters. This will help some of the fish that prefer cooler conditions. Stay informed on all the coming weather systems using your Pro Angler App! INSHORE – A lot of Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are being caught this week but there are more shorts than keepers. You can find them above grass in Lemon bay. Anglers are using both bait and artificials. Snook (Snook, Common) haven’t stopped. They are hot, hot, hot and everyone is catching them. Reds (Drum, Red) have been a bit tough. A lot of Jacks (Jack, Crevalle) are biting around the pass as well as in the bay. Off the shore the Bonito (Bonito, Little Tunny) are good within a mile of the beach. Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) are mixed in just South of the pier. Work the birds and the bait to find them. Yo-Zuri lures have been most productive. Anglers are gigging for Flounder (Flounder, Southern) however they are a bit slow on rod and reel. Despite that, there’s some good sizes coming in. Tarpon are back in also but they are small. INSHORE – The fishing has been great, especially if you are chasing Tarpon. They are running the beaches pretty solid. Crabs and Pinfish are the best baits. They are within 50 yards of the beach. Anglers are doing well with Seatrout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Snook (Snook, Common) on moving tide using Shrimp. The Trout are in deeper holes as they water is warming up. INSHORE – Pompano (Pompano, Florida) have been hit and miss the past week. They are swimming the beach. The Snook (Snook, Common) are catch and release but are thick all over the beach. Hair Jigs have been popular to hook them. There has not been a lot of news from Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) as they are scattered. We have not heard much on Reds (Drum, Red) at all. Mangrove Snapper (Snapper, Gray) are right at the Boca Grande pass. They are great sizes up to 16 inches. Anglers can get their limits. Live Shrimp is the best bait to throw. OFFSHORE – Anglers are going out far for Gags (Grouper, Gag). 30 plus miles is as far as you have to go. Any bait seems to work. Cut bait, live and artificial are working. Big Red Snapper (Snapper, Red) and Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater) are also hitting but they are catch and release. Cook’s Sportland Inc 941-493-0025 http://www.cookssportland.comJune 9, 2016

INSHORE – The passes are great for Snook (Snook, Common) this week on the outgoing tide. Reds (Drum, Red) and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) have shown up here too. Anglers are jigging with Bucktails, either half oz or three quarters. This does well on the moving tide, drifting down the jetty. There was even a Goliath Grouper (Grouper, Goliath) caught here. Live bait has been doing well too. From the beach Xwraps and Greenbacks are key. Trout are especially loving live Shrimp in the mangroves. Free-lining Pinfish is another great alternative. INSHORE – The Trout have lost quite a bit of size. With that said, there is still the odd Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) here and there that are keepers. There’s a few Redfish (Drum, Red) around as well but they are more so being hit incidentally. Snook (Snook, Common) have been pretty good along the beach and the Tarpon have gotten quite thick out there for boat anglers. It’s really important to watch how you get on the fish because it’s quite easy to blow your shot at them. Anglers have been throwing Crabs, Pinfish and Threadfins at the Tarpon. OFFSHORE – Snapper (Red, Snapper) season just started. 40 miles is probably going to be a really good starting point to start fishing for the Snappers. Gags (Grouper, Gag) also opened recently and if you’re fishing in close, trolling has been working well for fishermen in the area. Further out, well beyond the 40 ft. depth, dropping bait to them is the way to go. Cook’s Sportland Inc 941-493-0025 http://www.cookssportland.comMay 26, 2016

INSHORE – There are some Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) that are still biting well on small green or blue jerkbaits. A live Shrimp under a popping cork is also productive over the grass flats. Sheepshead are biting small pieces of shrimp on a slow reel around the docks. Cast 2 or 3 feet in front as they are holding up in the warmer water. Snook, Common are still extremely active in the shallows and can be hooked on small jerk baits. Cap’t Dave Wright Catch-n-release 517-736-4212 captaindavewright@gmail.comFebruary 10, 2016

INSHORE – It has been extremely windy in this area as of late. Conditions have been rough although anglers are still fishing off the docks to catch some Snook, Common. The backwaters are also holding some nice Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and plenty of Snook in 3-4ft. This also provides some shelter from the wind. Rapala O8s seem to be doing the trick to hook them this week. Anglers are working them in the shallow water under the docks and mangroves. The afternoon bite has been the best time to head out as the fish head to the shallower and warmer water. Snook, Jack (Jack, Crevalle) and Reds (Drum, Red) will move in at this point. This makes them easier to catch. As long as you find sheltered areas you will find the fish. BAIT REPORT – There are Shrimp and small Minnows in the backwater this week. INSHORE – The weather in the area has been great as of late. We are seeing Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) on small jerk baits or live Shrimp under a popping cork. Ladyfish and Jacks (Jack, Crevalle) are also turning up when you can find a little bit of warmer water. Creeks, Canals or river mouths are full of them. OFFSHORE – Those heading to the offshore are heading to 50 miles to catch some nice Grouper, Red and are doing pretty well with them. The sizes and bite has been consistent the past few days. INSHORE – The rain has continued however things are getting a little better in this area. Despite the cloudy water there are still catches of Speckled Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) moving up and down the intracoastal. Mackerel are taking jerkbaits in silver with a black back or silver with an olive green back. The Trout are preferring the same and the Mackerel seem to be caught incidentally. An hour before dark on the outgoing tide the Snook, Common are doing extremely well this week. We expect to see some nice weather coming up so anglers should have no problem hitting the water this weekend. INSHORE – The wind has kept many anglers off the water this week. The weather has been too bad creating many Small Craft warnings and high waves. The afternoon bite is the best bet since the water will warm up and the Reds (Drum, Red) and Jacks (Jack, Crevalle) will move into the shallow water to look for food. Anglers are throwing live Shrimp or similar artificials while fishing low and slow along the bottom. The fish are a little sluggish so a slow and patient retrieve allows them time to bite. We hope to see bigger Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) showing up soon since the temperature is dropping. This is great as they will school up so once you catch one, you will catch a few. INSHORE – Roughly 2 miles offshore anglers are seeing lots of Kings (Mackerel, King), Little Tunny (Bonito, Little Tunny) and a few Gags (Grouper, Gag). There was even a double catch on Cobia! Cobia can also be found trolling crank baits right off the beach too. Capt. Dave is trolling with large rapalas in 30 ft of water fishing roughly 15 ft deep. The fish can be found by the crab pots. The water temperature is dropping so the Kings may head out soon so take advantage! Cobia are expected to hang around still. INSHORE – The wind has prevented a lot of anglers from getting on the water this week. Those who do hit the water have stayed inside and found sheltered areas. Snook, Common and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are consistent from last week. There are several nice Flounder (Flounder, Southern & Flounder, Gulf) coming in now so those are target for most anglers. Their sizes are good so far this week. There are no reports of Bluefish so far this week. OFFSHORE – Once the weather settles down anglers can hit the offshore to target both Kingfish (Mackerel, King) and Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater) that were hitting well last week. Grouper (Grouper, Gag) have now reopened so most fishermen are excited to go after them again. The sizes are expected to be great but we will have to wait for the wind to die down to find out. INSHORE – There are some giant Bluefish coming in so far this week. They are all throughout the inshore and swimming with good sizes of Snook, Common, Ladyfish, and Jack, Crevalle. There are lots of fish to be caught this week. The incoming tide has produced the best bite so far and anglers are throwing mirrolures and slash baits. The best colors have been green and blue, both equally as good. There are no signs of Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) so far this week. INSHORE – The winds and fronts have kept a lot of anglers off the water for safety’s sake. It’s tough to get out just about everywhere however some anglers have made it out to the intercoastal. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted), Bluefish and Jacks (Jack, Crevalle) are turning up but are scattered due to the current conditions. It’s difficult to fish without anchoring your boat. Live bait is working best however there is no real preference other than Shrimp or similar artificials. We hope to see the conditions lie down for the holiday so anglers can hit the water. INSHORE – There’s lots of big Ladyfish in which are always great fun. We’ve been catching nice Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and big Bluefish on light tackle and having a blast. Some of the bigger Jack, Crevalle are starting to show up and there is also a good Snook, Common, bite around the lights and during early mornings using crankbaits, live shrimp, or whitebait (if you have any as there’s not much of it around). BAIT REPORT – There doesn’t seem to be too much Whitebait around this week. Cap’t Dave Wright Catch-n-release 517-736-4212 captaindavewright@gmail.comDecember 11, 2015

INSHORE – There are lots of fish in close this week. The weather has been good, the water is calm and wind is great. Inside the intercoastal there are a lot of Snook, Common and although they are out of season they are still fun to catch and release. Jacks (Jack, Crevalle) have moved to inshore along with some Ladyfish. Sizes are up to roughly 20 inches so far and this is usually a good sign we will be seeing Bluefish soon. The bite looks pretty good for the weekend. There are no signs of Seatrout, Spotted so far this week. As the weather cools we expect this to improve. OFFSHORE – Some anglers are still hooking some Grouper, Gag recreationally however they are out of season right now. The Sea Bass, Black bite is doing well just outside the inshore. Anglers slow trolling with xwraps are finding the most results so far. Conditions were a bit windy to go out too far, and it is suspected there is not a lot of action out there this week. INSHORE – Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are doing very well this week. They have been holding up in the grass flats. Shrimp were working well last week however the most effective method seems to be currently be small jerk baits. A lot of good keeper sizes are coming up on these, and even a few too big. Most are ranging between 16-19 inches. The Jacks (Jack, Crevalle) are beginning to move in from the outside this week which is a good sign that anglers will see Bluefish follow. They are coming up in solid numbers now that the temperature has dropped. The early morning bite has been the most productive, before things get too warm. BAIT REPORT – There are no reports of bait running so far this week Cap’t Dave Wright Catch-n-release 517-736-4212 captaindavewright@gmail.comNovember 26, 2015

INSHORE – The cold front has moved in and it is particularly windy in this area. In the sheltered areas anglers can find some decent sized Snook, Common that are loving mirrolures and xwraps this week. Snapper, Red has also been found in this area. The water is expected to lay down in time for the holiday so anglers that head out should expect to see a great Mackerel, King bite along with some Grouper, Gag at 27-30 ft of water. A pinfish along the bottom has been the best method of catching near ledges and holes. BAIT REPORT – Whitebait are running however the water has been way too choppy for live baiters to see and net them. INSHORE – There is a lot of action in this area lately. About a mile offshore anglers can expect to see some nice Kings (Mackerel, King) and Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) right off the Venice inlets. Trolling has been working best with a rapala number 12. Color has not seemed to make a huge difference although blue and silver are definitely a good bet. Snook, Common have been on fire this week. Anglers who head out just before dark are throwing under the docks using rapala SXR10s in blue or silver as well. They’re hooking dozens of Snook however only a few are within the slot keeper range. The Seatrout, Spotted bite has been good as well. They have been mixed in with the Snook and although many fishermen are not targeting them, they are showing up anywhere from 12-15 inches, sometimes bigger. Jack, Crevalle, have not moved in yet and anglers are awaiting a better Ladyfish bite too. The water is still warm so once a few good rainy days or cool nights push through, the fish are expected to move in. BAIT REPORT – There are tons of baitfish running on the beach as well as under the pier. They have not quite made their way inside yet. Cap’t Dave Wright Catch-n-release 517-736-4212November 13, 2015
Venice
INSHORE – Drum, Black has been hot in this area lately. Anglers have been catching them off the banks using fresh dead or live Shrimp. They haven’t been picky and you don’t even need a cork. There have been some good hits on Seatrout, Spotted as well however they have been coming up in smaller sizes on a paddle tail. Our sources are expecting them to get bigger once the cold front sets in this weekend. The bites and sizes should both increase. OFFSHORE – Dolphin have been singling out in the deeper water. This has made them far more sporadic. They have mainly been found around the 20 mile buoy mark. At the edge of the stream anglers can find lots of Wahoo in around 250 ft of water. They are chasing Ballyhoo with light colored skirts in pink and blue. BAIT REPORT – There are no bait running to report at this time however expectation is that the upcoming cold front will bring in the Shrimp that all the inshore fish chase. OFFSHORE – Grouper (Grouper, Red) is coming to a close in Federal water this week so keep in mind anglers will be limited to the 9 mile mark in State water. There are also reports of Mackerel (Mackerel, Spanish & Mackerel, King & Mackerel, Cero). You won’t have to go too far out for these as they are found generally at 2 miles on the reefs. Anglers have been trolling with spoons, gator spoons like captain action with different colored baits. The weather has made offshore fishing too difficult as of recently and there have been no reports in the past few days. When the weather settles we expect to see Grouper (Grouper, Gag) and Snapper (Snapper, Gray) show up with some Porgies as they began to bite.
INSHORE – The recent red tide has disappointed a lot of anglers. Although it seems to have dissipated the tide had a terrible effect on the inshore fish. With rain yesterday and today most of the fish have all but disappeared. There were previously Flounder in the bays and a few Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Snook (Snook, Common) however they are now a very challenging find.
BAIT REPORT – A majority of the bait has left due to the weather conditions and our sources do not anticipate seeing it resurface until next year as the water will soon cool down and anything left will move out.

Venice Fishing Report
OFFSHORE – It is no surprise that with all this wind we haven’t had a lot of reports of anglers making their way out. There has also been some reports of floating fish about 40 ft. out due to some red tide north end. Should you decide to make your way out this weekend feel free to take a look at our Tips section where you can find more information, suggestions and ‘how to’s on the fish of your choice!
INSHORE – Conditions are completely different inshore. Snook has been biting really well but your best bet is Trout. They were smaller in the past few weeks but are reaching sizes of 18-19 inches. Search the flats with an artificial bait. We have had no reports on the best colors as every anglers seems to have their own favorite so don’t be afraid to throw you favorites. Sprites and DOAs have had some great results for the bigger Trout. We are also seeing Flounder coming in at 18-20 inches. They haven’t been as easy find this year but if you manage to put yourself on a good spot, stick with it because they are hungry for White bait and Live Shrimp. If you head along the inside you can find even larger Flounder.
BAIT REPORT – If you search around the inside you will find some small baits but there is not a whole lot running right now. When the wind dies down we expect to see more baitfish but until then, artificial is the way to go.

OFFSHORE – The offshore fishing is pretty good right now. They’re catching Mangrove and Lane Snapper, bottom fishing. The main bait being used was Shrimp. There have been a few Grouper caught using cut bait on the bottom as well.
INSHORE – People are hitting Snook on smaller baits inshore. The greenish colors are working best right now.

Venice Fishing Report
OFFSHORE – The offshore fishing here has been wonderful. The water is nice and clear, people are catching limits of Gags and Red Grouper. Snappers have been biting well in the same waters. The Closer reefs, like Mary’s Reef, have been hit or miss for flounder, but is producing Permit. Some of the bigger Flounder are starting to show up although it’s a little early for them to be in big numbers. Spanish Mackerel have been fishing well, not many King Mackerel though.
INSHORE – There’s quite a lot of smaller Tarpon hanging around the Jetties. There’s also a lot of Snook being found in similar waters as well. With the current water color, visibility is down and the Finger Mullet is producing better than some other baits. Charlotte harbour, which is south of here, is starting to see the Red Snapper schooling up.
BAIT REPORT – Finger Mullet has been running. The water is pretty dark right now on account of all the rain that has been falling. You won’t find much in the way of Whitebait around.

OFFSHORE – It has been raining a lot and not many people have been out to the gulf. Our contacts didn’t even know where the blue water begins right now. Hopefully that will change by the weekend.INSHORE – In Peace River, there are Snook and Tarpon hitting on plugs. For artificial, you want to use a lighter colour because the water is dark right now.
BAIT REPORT – Rain has flushed the bait out. Water should lay down soon and hopefully fishing will go back to normal.

Port Charlotte and Venice Report
OFFSHORE: Trying to fish in the Gulf right now is more like trying to spit into the wind. A few have gone out in the inclement weather and report spending more time trying to fish than actually fishing. One wise, veteran fisherman’s advice: wait until the weather gets better before going offshore!INSHORE: Those fishermen and fisherwomen who have been brave enough to get out on the water with the current rainfall in southwest Florida (and who have working bilge pumps due to the rain-lol) have been rewarded with redfish, snook and a few cobia, many of which seem to be clustered around the islands. Shrimp and cut bait seem to be working best, especially since snook and redfish are attracted to scent as much as anything else. Remember that these game fish have sharp gills, so avoid slipping fingers into these gill areas after landing them. The cobia are still hanging out in the deeper water, and sharks seem to be quite active at this point. Spotted and silver trout are still hanging out in the flats, and there are reports of spadefish moving in during the recent storms. Like sheepshead, which will also move in near the structures when the weather cools, spadefish are not bad eating if one has the patience to clean them. Remember that light colored lures work best after the recent storms have stirred up the rivers emptying into the inter-coastal. All of the passes are wild with large snapper lying near the bottom. Get ready for a nice rod bend when these bigger snapper hit. You’ll swear you’ve hooked something huge!
PIERS/BRIDGES: At the Highway 41 bridges watch for snapper during the day and snook during the evening. Most anglers are using live shrimp and spinner baits, especially those that have some scent to them. The cobia have thinned out and are not as prevalent as they were last week. At the Bay Shore Piers, shark and cobia are keeping anglers busy. Nearby bait shops have reported increased return of snook, especially in the early morning and again just before nightfall. Turtle Bay has been a go to spot for many years, and when the fishing slows down in other nearby areas of the inter-coastal, those in the know head to this bay for snook and redfish which are currently pretty thick. These fish will move a bit farther from the land early in the morning and will then retreat to the mangroves when the sun comes out. A few anglers are catching redfish near the sand bars where the water begins to move with the shifting tide. Charlotte Harbor is producing some tarpon, but quite a few anglers are complaining about the number of catfish, which often register a minus five points on the fishing success scale. And do remember that catfish should be handled with care as they have barbs that are coated with a mucous that is no fun at all if it gets into a puncture wound. Tom Adams Bridge, which was recently completely refurbished, is still producing trout and snook. No one seems to know what has happened to the snapper that were really hot the week before. Medium shrimp are getting some nice trout, and some anglers are picking up snook alongside the pier with white spinner baits. The I-75 bridges (accessible by boat), like the 41 bridges, are offering tarpon and snook. Laishley Pier seems to be the spot for plenty of excitement this week. Several anglers have lost some pretty big fish, possibly sharks or large snook, so try this spot for a bit of adventure! El Jobean Pier is flush with shark and tarpon which have moved out of the mouth of the Myakka River and upstream. There are also reports of keeper pompano which are treasured for their wonderful white meat. Plus, for their size, they give a heck of a fight. A few fortunate anglers have brought in some pretty good sized black drum as well. Most of the pier anglers are using oval weights with sliding hooks and shrimp. Some of the larger fish are lurking off the end of the pier near the deep channel. Think about taking a drop net for those larger fish. It’s nearly impossible to haul a big fish all the way up to the pier deck!

Venice Fishing Report
OFFSHORE – Malcolm at Cook’s Sportland lets me know that the trolling has been tough because of the recent lightening storms, but the bottom fishing has really turned on. In 65 feet of depth that is where the fishing gets really good, so keep your eyes out for rock piles, hard bottom, and wrecks. The best stuff is out at 100 foot. People have been been catching their limits of keeper Grouper, Gags, and Reds. There is also a nice Mangrove Snapper bite right now. Pinfish has been working phenomenally, but failing that try catching Squirrelfish and Grunts and cutting them up.INSHORE – Trout and Redfish are being caught on artificial lures right now and everyone has their own preference on what colours to use. Live bait is always great to use but Shrimp is a little harder to get this time of year. Most people are cast netting white bait and smaller Pinfish. You want to fish the grass flats for the trout. Bull Bay area near Boca Grande has some great fishing going on right now.
BAIT REPORT – There is bait inshore, and it is pretty easy to find. The offshore bait travels in large schools so you want to sabiki them up, if you come across them.

INSHORE – Redfish and trout are the main fish inshore right now and will continue to be for the foreseeable future. There are some good sized bull Redfish too, which is good news because you should expect to find more Redfish than Trout. Captain Chad really like the Cocahoe lures, especially under a popping cork. Popping corks with dead Shrimp also attract a good number of fish. As for locations, you want to go somewhere the a good current, try fishing sandbars, points, drains, and generally along the outside of the marsh.BAIT REPORT – In certain areas there are tons of Mullet and Pogies. Search along the coastline; east and west depending on the wind direction. You are bound to find them eventually.

OFFSHORE – Has been pretty good but expect to go out 45 feet or more. Malcolm over at Cook’s Sportland started to find some good fishing at about 40 feet. He was catching Red Grouper, Mangrove Snapper, Lane Snapper, and Vermillion Snapper. He says that his trick is to find the lime rock that is flat with some growth on it and that is pretty good for fishing. The current wasn’t that strong which was surprising. Live pinfish, whitebait, and shrimp have been working well.INSHORE – The Snook have been on the beach and follow the whitebait – but be warned, the bait is on and off. They are also catching a good amount of Whiting but the Mackerel and Flounder have been really hard to find. There is Black Drum here and there and Trout are in the bays, but the Redfish are on the hide right now.
BAIT REPORT – Pinfish is around on the beach, and there is more assorted whitebait if you look for it.

Venice Fishing Report
OFFSHORE – It’s quite windy offshore right now . That is expected to settle out by the end of the weekend. If you’re heading out try bottom fishing. There you’ll can expect to find Red Grouper, Porgies, Grunts and Mangrove Snapper. You’ll want to drop some Squid for them, especially the Grunts.INSHORE – If the wind calms down you’ll find some Snook and Whiting out there. The Mackerel have been hinding lately.Fish the high tide on the beach and you’ll find Snook and Trout. Use white bait lure for the Snook (4 inch) with a quarter oz head on it.
BAIT REPORT – Bait is around but you’ll want to be out in the Gulf. Use a Sabiki or net or a single hook with Squid or Shrimp.

OFFSHORE – Red Snapper season will be closing soon so get out there and enjoy it while it lasts. There is a lot of Grouper out there as well and you’ll have no problem reaching the limit. The Mangrove Snapper have also been good. The Kings have made their way out but the Cobia is still around.Try dropping cut bait Grunts which arecutting the Grouper catch time in half. You can also try dropping live Pinfish and live Squirrelfish. Or try just anchoring up and dropping a jig.INSHORE – The Tarpon are biting well on Crab, big Shrimp and live bait. Inshore around Charlotte Harbour has been really good along with Turtle Bay. Failing live bait artificials are working well. Try Yo Zuri spooks or MirroLure that look like greenbacks. Shad Tail, Shrimp tails and Gulps are working well too when used in natural colours.
BAIT REPORT – At certain times bait is flush. The bait fish travel in pods so there is a lot of Pinfish.
