South Brunswick Fishing Report

INSHORE – Things are beginning to pick up as the Drum (Drum, Black) and Flounder become more active. Drum are preferring Shrimp. Most of the Flounder (Flounder, Southern) are still small and swimming in the creeks behind Sunset Beach. Cast Mud Minnows for the best sizes. Nice Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are turning up around the jetty area. Vudus, DOAs and Trout Tricks are all working to hook them. Whiting (Kingfish, Southern) are on the beaches taking Shrimp. They are primary bite although Bluefish and Croaker (Croaker, Atlantic) have been caught as well. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish listed below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

INSHORE – A few Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) continue to show up in the backwater. Reds (Drum, Red) are showing up in the same areas throughout the deep holes. Croaker (Croaker, Atlantic), Whiting (Kingfish, Southern) and Black Drum (Drum, Black) are inside as well. Drum are taking fresh Shrimp. Trout are preferring Gulp on a jig. INSHORE – The unfavorable weather has kept anglers off the water so far this week. Prior to the system we were finding a hot bite of Black and Red Drum (Drum, Black & Drum, Red) fishing docks using a Carolina Rig with fresh Shrimp during a falling tide. The Whiting (Kingfish, Southern) has been hot around the mouth of the Cape Fear River. Small pieces of Shrimp and Sand Flea by Fishbites have been top producers. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish listed below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – Anglers are jigging for Black Bass (Sea Bass, Black) along with Flounder (Flounder, Southern) and Bull Drum (Drum, Red) about 20 miles offshore. 20 ounce SPRO Bucktail or Zman 5 inch jerk shads are working well to hook them on the bottom.

BAIT REPORT – Bait has not quite made it to the beach yet but you can see birds diving for them offshore.

INSHORE – We are still catching Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) during the day this week. Croakers (Croaker, Atlantic) are turning up around Holden Beach, they are up to 15 inches and the numbers are nothing to complain about. Whiting (Kingfish, Southern) are still scarce. Drum (Drum, Black) and Sheepshead are still hot on structures. Fresh Shrimp on a regular bottom rig around the pylons and docks is your best bet to hook them. INSHORE – We are seeing things slow down a bit as the temperatures begin to cool down. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are still swimming the backwaters and canals this week. Anglers are finding decent sizes if you put some time in. Generally moving water will be your best bet to find them. In the ocean we are seeing nice Whiting (Kingfish, Southern) taking Shrimp fairly consistently. Some anglers are finding success under a popping cork or bobber. South Brunswick Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) fishing has been awesome this week. This may be the best year in a long time. Rubber baits, DOA, Vudu Shrimp, Gulp and live Shrimp are all working well. They will eat just about anything. Presentation is 95 percent of the game so slow your retrieve down and drop it low. Lockwood Folly River and Shallotte River have been excellent. You can also search the creeks running into the waterway. Anchor in the high water and cast into the creek. A few Red and Black Drum (Drum, Red & Drum, Black) and a couple of Flounder [Flounder, Southern & Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] are also turning up. They are moving more outside but are moving slowly. Mud Minnows and Gulp are working well to hook them. Shrimp are the preference for the Reds. Cut Mullet is working as well right off the surf. Search for the Black Drum in the waterway around the piers and pylons. A few Sheepshead are mixed in taking Fiddler Crabs. INSHORE – The Specks are doing really well into this week on artificial grubs, rubber baits, DOA Shrimp and Vudu Shrimp. Gulp is even doing well along with live Shrimp. The Shallotte River and Lockwood River are producing well. Reds (Drum, Red) are here and there. Flounder (Flounder, Southern) are also still around and biting in legal sizes. INSHORE – We have seen a pretty prominent Speck (Seatrout, Spotted) bite this week. Trout are still in creek mouths and waterways. Not many are oceanside yet. Moving tide is your best time to fish. Vudu Shrimp, live Minnows or Live Shrimp under a popping cork are working best to hook them. Redfish (Drum, Red) are being caught as well. INSHORE – A lot of Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are being caught up the rivers. Fish the edge of the grasses using bright, artificial baits. White/Chartreuse Vudu Shrimp and Glow Grubs with a Chartreuse tail are good bets. Fish them on a jighead and low in the water. Flounder (Flounder, Southern) are being picked up on the same setup. Spot are in the waterway. Black Drum (Drum, Black) are in the inlets. Decent Whiting (Kingfish, Southern) have turned up as well. Red Drum (Drum, Red) are still in the surf. The sizes are good however they are slowing down. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish listed below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

South Brunswick Fishing Report

INSHORE – Recently, we have been focusing on Specks (Seatrout, Spotted). Live Shrimp is the key bait for them. This past week we have caught limits of them and hooked more than 30 fish easily. A lot of the fish also released were undersized Redfish (Drum, Red). For the Trout, artificials such as the Saltwater Assassin in Electric Chicken or the Vudu Shrimp in Cajun with a Chartreuse tail are working well. Gulp baits are a never fail choice. The upcoming cold front should really activate the Fall Trout bite. All in all, the half day trip has been very productive. INSHORE – We are moving into the best time of year to fish! We are in the beginning of the Bull Redfish (Drum, Red) run. The fish we are seeing now are not huge but they are averaging 15 lbs. Otherwise we are puppy Drum fishing in the creeks. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Flounder (Flounder, Southern) are beginning to improve as conditions cool off as well. Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) are swimming the beach front. False Albacore (Bonito, Little Tunny) have moved in the past few days. INSHORE – There haven’t been a whole lot of fish caught due to the weather. A few Flounder (Flounder, Southern) and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) have been brought in. This has been the main focus for most anglers as it has been too windy for anglers to hit the water. When conditions settle down we expect to see Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) and Kings (Mackerel, King) around the 3 to 5 mile mark as well as Mahi around 50 miles. INSHORE – From the surf the Whiting (Kingfish, Southern) are hot this week. Pompano (Pompano, Florida) have also shown up. Spots and Blues (Bluefish) are here and there. Drum (Drum, Black) have been mixed in. A lot of rain water has muddied up the surf this week. It may take a while for the water to clear up so the bite may be off for the next week or two. From the boats the Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) are doing well outside the brackish line. In the waterway we are seeing Redfish (Drum, Red) being caught. There have also been reports from Flounder (Founder, Southern) in this area.

OFFSHORE – The main focus offshore is Dolphin and Billfish (Billfish – Sailfish & Billfish – Swordfish & Billfish – Marlin, Blue & Billfish – Marlin, White) at this time of year. INSHORE – The storm last weekend didn’t hurt us too bad. There’s been Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) caught inshore along with Redfish (Drum, Red) and Drum (Drum, Black). We’ve had some good reports of Flounder inside on Mud Minnows. Out front there’s Pompano (Pompano, Florida) and Bluefish. Gotcha plugs are great for Bluefish while small Shrimp or pieces of larger shrimp and Fishbites work well for Pompano.

INSHORE – Whiting (Kingfish, Southern) are still being caught from the surf this week. Small pieces of Shrimp on the bottom will do well to hook them. Croaker and a few Spot are in the area. The first keeper Flounder (Flounder, Southern) are showing up and the numbers are increasing. There is little movement on Drum (Drum, Black) however the Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are moving to the river and the mouth of river instead of in the canal. Drum are hitting cut bait while Trout prefer Vudu Shrimp or Gulp. The water is warming up and we expect to see Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) move in soon as well.

OFFSHORE – Black Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are holding up from the 6 mile mark and on. The weather has been unfavorable lately so it has been difficult for anglers to get out on the water. The inshore has been the main focus so far. There are no reports of Kings (Mackerel, King) as of yet.

There are some really good sized Whiting (Kingfish, Northern & Kingfish, Southern) over a foot long being caught in the waterway and surf. They will eat cut bait or Shrimp so far.

OFFSHORE – Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are on the reefs this week. Anglers are throwing Squid to find them. Flounder (Flounder, Southern) are slowly moving in the same area. INSHORE – There has been a great Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) bite lately, especially in the canals. Vudu Shrimp by Egret is the key to catching them. The falling tide is the best time to fish for them. There has also been some Flounder (Flounder, Winter) caught in the same area. Gulp and Mud Minnows have been the most post productive baits. They are also swimming the nearshore reefs this week. There are still a few Whiting (Kingfish, Southern & Kingfish, Northern) in the surf this week. Anglers are throwing Shrimp and artificial bloodworms to find them. The surf has been productive at all times of the day.

OFFSHORE – There was a great King (Mackerel, King) bite on the other side of the tower this week. Sea Bass, Black are also holding up on all the reefs. There are tons in various sizes. The farther out you go, the bigger the sizes you will find.

INSHORE – Well folks, another year and another fishing season has come and gone. I would like to say thank you to everyone that fished with me this year, as I enjoyed fishing with each and every one of you. I certainly have had easier years fish wise but, as always, it could have certainly been worse. Our Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) bite continued on throughout November and into December, and while many of our November and December Trout were on the smaller side, they certainly made up for it with their numbers. We also managed to find some Reds (Drum, Red) and Drum (Drum, Black) to add a little variety on almost every trip as well. All in all we had a great fall and hopefully we will have a strong crop of trout for next year. We will have to see what the rest of the winter has in store for us, but the 2016 season could very well get off to an early start. Once again, thank you to all my clients this year, and I hope to see you again in 2016!

INSHORE – Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are still undersized this week however there are plenty of them. Once the temperature drops a little more the size should increase and the bite should become more frequent. Bull Reds (Drum, Red) are hitting in the surf however they have become spotty this week. There are a lot of Bluefish in the same area. These fish are preferring cut Mullet or Shrimp this week.

OFFSHORE – Tuna, Bluefin has been the only report from offshore so far this week however they do have a consistent bite. The sizes are great and they are hitting large Ballyhoo like crazy.

South Brunswick Fishing Report

INSHORE – Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are biting in both great numbers and sizes. The bite is expected to increase as the temperature drops. Anglers are using Vudu or DOA Shrimp as well as Bass assassin on a Carolina Rig, sometimes with a popping cork and a jighead. There has not been a better tide to fish as, again, there are enough trout that it doesn’t matter. There are still a few reports of Reds (Drum, Red) and Flounder (Flounder, Winter) being caught as well. Anglers are using Mud Minnows for the best results. Some of the Trout are hitting these too even.

OFFSHORE – There were a few Kings (Mackerel, King) at the 32 mile mark coming up from 15-18lbs. There has also been a report of a Tuna, Bluefin caught off the Knuckle Buoy near Southport. Anglers hope to see some good sizes of Tuna before the temperature drops. They are moving right now so it’s a great time to hit the water.

BAIT REPORT – There are still some Shrimp running this week and a very spotty Mud Minnow presence in the water.

South Brunswick Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are the main focus so far this week. They are coming in from 12-18 inches. Anglers have to pick their tide. Moving water is always a good bet. The larger sizes are coming out of the waterway so far this week and not the river. The Shell bank on the Southport side has been producing good fish as well as around the buoys. There have also been a few Blues (Bluefish) turn up last weekend and a decent bite has continued so far this week. No signs of Flounder have come up yet this week. The water is still warm as temperatures have not yet dropped. Rain has been on and off but nothing harsh enough to keep anglers off the water.

BAIT REPORT – There has been an awesome Shrimp run this week. Lots of great sizes and numbers. It will definitely not be difficult to stock up no bait.

INSHORE – Everything is about the Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) in this area lately. The wind and rain has made inshore fishing difficult this week however everyone who has headed out has brought back some Trout in various sizes and numbers. The temperature is still mild for this time of year and the weights will only get better as the temperature drops. They are turning up in the canals as well, off of the intracoastal waterway. Vudu lures, gulp bait in new penny, bass assassins in electric chicken and woodpecker are all baits of choice this week under a popping cork. Most anglers are turning to artificial bait as the live has moved out.

BAIT REPORT – So far there have not been any bait caught in this area. Most have moved out at this point and anglers are leaning towards store bought.

INSHORE – The Specks (Seatrout, Spotted) have been on fire this week, which is typical for the time of year. A lot of them are still smaller and anglers have to pick through quite a few fish to get some decent sizes. There has not been much brought in above 5lbs at this point although the weather hasn’t cooled down enough to bring in the big sizes. Expect that once it cools down even more there should be bigger fish and a better bite. There have been lots of Drum (Drum, Black) in the same places and they have been relatively small as well. Reds (Drum, Red) are also beginning to pick up as they bunch together and make their way into the shallow creeks again. This movement is typical of the time of year as well. Sizes have been anywhere from 16-20 inches so far. They are also on the docks in the waterways. The Jetty has been home to a decent Sheepshead bite which is not surprising. Flounder has all fizzled out now and there have been no reports of any being caught this week. Shrimp is still the bait of choice for pretty much everything. It is working well under a floating rig. Fishing should continue on like this through the next few weeks.

BAIT REPORT – There have not been any reports of bait running yet this week.

INSHORE – This area is still producing a fairly solid bite despite slowing down a touch. There have been reports of a good amount of Spot along with Whiting (Kingfish, Northern), Reds (Drum, Red) and Drum (Drum, Black). There has even been a report or two of some Pompano, Florida biting. Most anglers are using Bloodworms, Red Worms or artificial bloodworms to hook Spots and are then incidentally catching the other species on the same bait. There have not been any signs of Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) this week however our sources suspect that they’re still out there and could be caught on live or artificial Shrimp.

OFFSHORE – The weather has finally dropped a little bit which has slowed down the bite in the deep water. Not too many anglers have headed offshore this week however there have been a few reports of Mackerel, King swimming and can be caught on Ballyhoo. Anglers have also reported a very spotty Wahoo bite and some Grouper, Gag on the bottom. Anglers are still using cut cigars or frozen Minnows for them.

BAIT REPORT – There have not been any reports of bait running yet this week. Both Menhaden and Mullet were spotty last week.

South Brunswick Fishing Report

INSHORE – Trout, Trout and lots of Trout (Seatrout, Spotted). The bite has been great lately in this area. Anglers are using Vudu Shrimp with a lot of success however Live Shrimp have been doing even better. Bass Assassin grubs are another great artificial alternative with good results. Trout have mostly been found in the backwater as well as in the area where the creeks run to the intracoastal waterway. A few Reds (Drum, Red) have shown up this week in good sizes as well. Surf fishermen are finding better results on the incoming, clean water tide. The large amounts of rain lately has mixed the water quite well and made fishing difficult in some areas. Surf casters are hitting a mixed bag of fish including Reds, Whiting (Kingfish, Northern), Bluefish, Pompano (Pompano, Florida), and Drum, Black.

OFFSHORE – The bite in the deep water continues to do well despite the rainy conditions lately. Mackerel, Spanish have been moving farther out along with the Mackerel, King. Both can be found around 10-15 miles out. Most anglers are pulling Cigar Minnows or Ballyhoo and finding a lot of success. There aren’t too many bait fish running in this area so this gives anglers the opportunity to throw almost anything they want and still find a bite. There have been reports of a spotty Wahoo bite along with some Grouper, Gag off the bottom. Squid and cut Cigars or frozen Minnows have produced the best results in 70-90 ft of water. The weather has been raining steady the past few weeks however fishing has still been good.

BAIT REPORT – There are still a few reports of some Menhaden and Mullet however they have become very spotty, possibly due to the mix of freshwater lately.

South Brunswick Fishing Report

INSHORE – Similar to last week, Stripers (Bass, Striped) have been hiding around the bridges. Boaters are trolling using stretch 15-25s, rattle traps and 1 oz. Bucktails. Chartreuse with a curly tail seems to be the artificial of choice however light and dark green are working as well. Some anglers are using live Eels, Croakers or Pinfish however being that the catch is usually pretty small a majority are preferring to use artificials as it’s mostly catch and release fishing. Along the beaches there is a great Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) bite along with Bluefish, Drum (Drum, Black & Drum, Red) getting larger in the surf. Trout have been chasing artificials such as a berkley gulp, bass assassin or zman in various colours. It is really a day to day process of figuring out what the fish prefer. Blues are hitting most anything including fresh Mullet. Drum, both puppy and larger sizes have also preferred fresh Mullet. Surprisingly, anglers have been hooking Puffer (Puffer, Smooth) on Shrimp or Bloodworms. This species is normally not in season at this time however with the unpredictable weather lately they have been biting. False Albacore (Bonito, Little Tunny) have also been found in the surf.

OFFSHORE – When the weather is accommodating there has been a good bite on Tuna (Tuna, Blackfin & Tuna, Yellowfin) with some fishermen even hitting their limits. Farther out at the 25-30 mile range there have been reports of some Dolphin and Wahoo swimming. Billfish – Sailfish were doing great as well and anglers have been hooking all of these species while trolling with skirted Ballyhoo.

BAIT REPORT – Most of the finger sized Mullet are gone. There’s also plenty of Spearing along the beach.

INSHORE – There has been a solid Bull Red (Drum, Red) bite lately as they follow the bait run along the beaches. You can find them in anywhere from 6-30 ft of water and are developing into a localized fishery. Anglers in boats or from the shore will have no trouble finding them.

OFFSHORE – Normally there is a thick King run (Mackerel, King) in the fall however this year, due to the weather conditions, they have been way off and the bite has been spotty. When the weather breaks and things begin to settle down there is expected to be a great Wahoo bite using old faithful colors like blue and white.

BAIT REPORT – Schools of Menhaden are plentiful at this time, and if you find the bait you will find the fish.

South Brunswick Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Anglers were finally able to hit the offshore this week and didn’t come up empty handed. Kings (Mackerel, King) and Wahoo are doing well if you are about 60-70 miles out and Ballyhoo seems to be the most effective bait for them. Several species of Grouper have been hooked offshore including Gags (Grouper, Gag) which is one of the more prominent catches. Beeliners (Snapper, Vermillion) have also had great results this week as tons of them have come out of the water however they are no reports regarding exact locations yet.

INSHORE – Redfish (Drum, Red) Flounder (Flounder, Gulf & Flounder, Southern) and Spotfish are all hitting well now that conditions have subsided. The water is beginning to clear after the heavy rain and there are even some Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) that have been caught using live Shrimp. Anglers are float fishing for the Trout and it is working very well.

BAIT REPORT – There are still some Mullet running although we are approaching the tail end of the season. For some more ideas on what to use for bait you can always refer to our Tips section which may help you improve your catch.

South Brunswick Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – The guys at Rod & Reel Shop haven’t had any offshore reports come in this week.

INSHORE – Inshore fishing is beginning to improve near Lockwood Folly Inlet . Although it has been cold, the weather has been clear lately so lots of huge Redfish have been caught off the beaches. Blood Worms, Shrimp, and both live and frozen Finger Mullet have been catching monster Redfish and Bluefish.

BAIT REPORT – The water has been slammed full of mullet. For smaller mullet, check the back waters.

South Brunswick Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Spanish Mackerel is doing well within a mile of the beach. And, within 10- 12 miles, King Mackerel are thick. Flounder is doing good on the reefs -not so much intercoastal, but they are doing well offshore on the reefs. Offshore use Mud Minnows and Mullet Minnows. One or two Spots have been caught in the past week. It’s about 15 days early for the Spot, but they are starting to show up.

INSHORE – Spanish Mackerel are biting well within a mile of the beach. Red Drum are in pretty good numbers along the beach and inshore structures. Mullet are going to be your best bait to throw as there’s lots around to be chased by game fish.

BAIT REPORT – Lots of Mullet running the beaches and inshore structures. Netting has been working well.
