Salinas River State Beach Fishing Report
OFFSHORE – The long awaited bite is over and Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Yellowtail & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Widow & Rockfish, Canary) are finally open! So far we have seen easy limits of Rock cod with solid numbers of Lingcod mixed in. They are progressively improving from day to day, so anglers fishing a metal jig tipped with Squid will do well, especially over structured bottom. We hope to see this continue well into the season.

INSHORE – As anglers wait for Rockfish to open we anticipate that things are heating up nicely. In the meantime, Sanddab (Sanddab, Pacific) and Surfperch (Surfperch, Barred & Surfperch, Redtail) are the main fish to target during this time of year. If you are fishing for them, Bloodworms, Gulp Worms or Lugworms are generally your best bet in shallower, warm areas during the day. We hope to continue to see nice weather until then the Spring bite fires up.

INSHORE – The weather has kept many anglers off the water the past few days. Those who were able to find some weather windows headed out during the day for Sanddab (Sanddab, Pacific) in great numbers along with a decent amount of Dungeness Crab. The Sanddab generally prefer small bait such as lugworms, gulp worms or bloodworms.

INSHORE – There hasn’t been a whole lot of change in this area as we wait for Rockfish to open. The Sanddab (Sanddab, Pacific) and Mackerel (Mackerel, Pacific) are the main bites this week. The Crab are also still being caught however they are slowing down. Moss Landing has been the hot area to search for them this week. We hope to see this continue until the Spring bite fires up.

INSHORE – This week the day bite is starting to see some improvement in terms of Sanddab (Sanddab, Pacific) numbers. The sizes aren’t bad so far. Fish for them on soft bottom using Lugworms, Gulp worms or Bloodworms. Shallow, warmer areas are best. The Dungeness Crab counts have increased into this week. We are seeing some fantastic numbers so far this week. Anglers are eagerly awaiting Rockfish opener coming very soon!

INSHORE – Not a lot has changed into this week however we are finding a few undersized Stripers (Bass, Striped) off the beach. Anglers are hooking them with Gulp, Big Hammers or Sandworms while targeting Surfperch (Surfperch, Barred). Sanddab (Sanddab, Pacific) are still on the beach as well.

INSHORE – Sanddab (Sanddab, Pacific) are still turning up with decent sized Sole (Sole, Petrale). Anglers are heading to roughly 300 ft to find them. There hasn’t been any word on the Mackerel bite. Crabbing is slow but is expected to pick up. Outdoor World Sporting Goods is now under new management. Stop in and say Hi!

INSHORE – The upcoming weather may throw off some of the bite however at this time there has still been some fish to catch this week. Sanddab (Sanddab, Pacific) are doing well and there are some small Halibut (Halibut, California) and Sole (Sole, Petrale) being caught on the same trips. The Surfperch (Surfperch, Barred) are still biting on the beach and around the mouth of the Salinas. The Crab numbers are improving to half or full limits into this week.

INSHORE – Sanddab (Sanddab, Pacific) and Sole are the main targets this week. The morning bite is more productive. Generally Sandworms or Bloodworms will work well to hook them. Anglers are also doing well on the Crab traps. This is expected to carry through until Spring when things open up.

INSHORE – Anglers are heading out the morning to search for Crabs and Sanddab (Sanddab, Pacific) this week. You can find the Sanddab over soft bottom in shallow, warm areas. We hope to see the bite pick up when conditions are a bit more favorable for anglers to get out on the water.

Salinas River State Beach Fishing Report
INSHORE – We caught up with Virg’s Bait and Tackle for a fishing report this week, and as you may have heard – and felt, the weather has been way too unfavorable for anglers to be hitting the water from shore or from boats. During the breaks anglers can find Sanddab (Sanddab, Pacific) in deeper water. Perch (Surfperch, Barred) can be found on the beach when anglers can get out. Gold Sandworms are best to hook them. There hasn’t been anything on Rockfish or Lingcod as of late but we suspect anglers are likely still targeting them. There should still be Stripers (Bass, Striped) in the river. There are flash flood warnings, high wind and huge waves. We encourage all anglers to take this time to check out some of the great Pro Angler App features and prepare for their next trip when condition are more ideal. We hope to see things improve soon! You can make reservations at Virg’s Bait & Tackle for their great overnight and two day trips on their website!

INSHORE – Earlier in the week was Fun fun fun! Ran out to the crab grounds and ran some crab pots AND prawn pots and lo and behold there were Crabs and about 7 pounds of coonstripe prawns, and we even got some small octopus! Then headed to the fishing grounds and must have caught over 20 Canaries that we had to throw back according to our brilliant government Canaries are endangered). Had fun catching Blue and Black pacific Snapper (Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Black) but wanted to focus more on Lingcod. Hooked 15 Lingcod and brought home five. The other ten Lingcod were either short or no-shows. Got buzzed by a Great White Shark just a foot away from the boat. Weather was perfect and will be perfect for the next week! More recently was a special trip up to Ano Nuevo a.k.a. Jurassic Park. The water and weather were perfect and the fishing was off the hook! We nailed limits for seven hard working fishermen plus Lingcod. Biggest fish was a seven pound Red Pacific Snapper (Snapper, Vermillion). The Black Pacific Snappers averaged two pounds each. These are really big fish! This was our last Jurassic Park trip until April next year. We expect this bite to forecast into the holiday week. The Pro Angler Team wishes you a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. We look forward to bringing you more great reports in 2017!

INSHORE – The weather has been terrible lately. Perch (Surfperch, Barred) are hit or miss. Sandworms are typical bait however imported Bloodworms are working as well. Some 14 inch fish are coming off the beach. The weather has been tough for Crabs however if you can get out they are there. There was a 7 Gill Shark that got chomped on by some Orcas. OFFSHORE – Snapper (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown) trip again today but the fish weren’t cooperating much. Water was a little chewed up in the morning then it got real nice late morning early afternoon. Hooked into some Sharks and landed one. We think we were hooked into a 100 plus pound Sevengill Shark. Fought for at least 15 minutes before it broke off. Good fight and big circles under the boat. Greg and I might go Shark hunting this week with steel leaders and whole live fish for bait. There’s plenty of Croakers, Mackerel (Mackerel, Pacific) and Jack Smelt around for bait. Let me know if your interested. We have good weather forecasted all week.

INSHORE – We are seeing limits pretty much everyday on Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish Starry & Lingcod). Anchovy are your best bet to hook them overall. Generally the day time is the best time to fish them from the bottom using the Anchovy on a metal jig. Alternatively Squid will work. The sizes have been great so far. Crab is getting better the past couple of day. We started out slow but ended well.

There is a mix of schoolie, limit and oversized fish. There hasn’t been much on the Crabs yet.
OFFSHORE – Bluefin (Tuna, Bluefin) are in the bay. Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper) can also be caught this week.

INSHORE – Sunday 10/23, Skipper Frank Kelley took the Rita G up above Piedras Blancas on a Full Day trip. A 32.5 lb Lingcod was landed by Matt Kennedy of Bakersfield, CA for the jackpot win. That is the biggest ling caught out of any landing on the Central Coast this season. Deckhand Matt Oliver did a great job with the gaff on that Toad. In addition, the 21 anglers on the boat scored 185 red rockfish, 9 more Lings and 25 assorted. Tuesday 10/25, the Fiesta, with Skipper Nick Mendoza & 11 anglers, went up north on a three quarter day trip. Sean Doyle of Visalia, CA scored the second biggest ling of the season at 28.6 lbs (see attached photos). Again, the second biggest out of any landing on the Central Coast. With full limits achieved, the final count was 33 lings, 22 Reds, 33 Coppers, 54 Assorted & 1 Cabezon. Deckhand Cody Doot reported that there were 2 other Lings caught on that trip in the low to mid 20 lb range. A badly needed rainstorm came through the Central Coast on Friday 10/28. A Full Day private charter went up north on the Fiesta and were rewarded for their efforts with full limits of lings and rockfish. The final tally was 69 lings, 92 Reds,23 Coppers, 1 Cabezon & 114 assorted. The jackpot was taken by Richard Hoffmann of San Miguel, CA with a 17.4 lb Ling. INSHORE – The inshore fishing was slow due to the swell and red tide. There were a few areas near South Rock that are clearing up. There was a nice Halibut (Halibut, Pacific) caught outside the S.C. Buoy in Capitola. There is some green mixed warm water out about 15 miles. There are schools of bait out there and some fish were seen slashing through the bait today. The Dungeness Crab season is set to open on November 5. Stop by for all your Crab fishing needs.
OFFSHORE – Earlier in the week the wind blew today and the swell is still here. We hope to see some anglers on the water by this weekend. There were no boats in the parking lot today. There is still some good looking 60 degree water out near 36’54/122’12. There may be a bunch of Bluefin (Tuna, Bluefin) out there but no one is looking. The weather looks like it is going to get better from Thursday into the weekend. Recently the weather was nice today and some anglers looked offshore for Pelagic. Tom on the Sara Bella caught a nice Opah slow trolling a dead Sardine 75 feet down. The Opah was caught near the point of Monterey. The Rockfishing (Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Vermillion) is slowly getting better now that is the red tide is going away.

OFFSHORE – Early in the week Monterey Bay Charters fished local. The water was as flat as a pancake. Very slow bite throughout the day with a little burst toward the end of the trip. Landed two nice Cabezon and five plus limits of nice Olive and Blue Pacific Snapper (Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Blue). Fish were a bit on the smaller side today and we must have tossed back a couple dozen. Threw back a short Lingcod, missed a couple others and lost something HUGE (think 35 pound Halibut) just under the boat. Recently Monterey Bay Charters headed to JURASSIC PARK. Water was flat calm all the way to the island and when we got there the wind was pushing 15 mpg. Very fishable for about five hours then had to head home. Got some nice Lingcod and six limits of quality Blue, Black, China and Red Pacific Snapper (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Starry) to 9 pounds!

OFFSHORE – JURASSIC PARK trip today and, contrary to the weather forecast, it was a perfect day on the water. No wind and no big swell. The fish were biting good too. 11 year-old Riley managed to land six Lingcod by himself and brought another five to the boat that got away. Second place was dad with four Lingcod in the boat and lost maybe six (not dad’s fault!), the rest of the action was pretty much solid with BIG blacks and BIG blues. Came home with ten Lingcod to 15 pounds and 48 BIG pacific Snapper for four people. Great day! INSHORE – Early in the week we had flat as a pancake water with no wind and no fog. Perfect conditions for great fishing and we had off the hook action with 3/4 limits of Black, Olive, Brown and six BIG Vermillion plus eight Lingcod for six people. Jigged up live Mackerel today. (Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper). Recently in TUNA NEWS – There’s a four to ten pound Bonito (Bonito, Pacific) bite going on down near Moss Landing. INSHORE – We went to Jurassic Park today and we were not disappointed! We slammed the Lingcod today for limits for all plus we released at least a dozen (some intentionally). Biggest Ling 19 pounds. Then we went on to Snapper and again pumped out limits plus crew fish of Blue, Black, Copper, Brown and BIG Red pacific Snapper (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Vermillion) to six pounds. Total at the end of the mayhem was 85 fish (18 Lingcod + 67 snapper) that came to roughly 250 or more pounds. Everyone is going to need a rest tonight. A lot of work and a lot of happy folks. There are no confirmed Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) in the area. All we’re hearing is radio fish. I will update this report if the Tuna show up and will send out an email to everyone we have an address for. Salinas River State Beach Fishing Report
OFFSHORE – Earlier in the week the morning was foggy with flat as a pancake water and 55 degrees all day long. Nice limits of quality Olive, Blue, Brown and Red pacific snapper (Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Vermillion) and a Lingcod were caught. During the mid week morning trip flat calm water and air temp around 57 made for a very nice morning of fishing and dolphin watching. We got into a big Olive bite and it was non-stop action. Limits of pacific snapper for all plus a couple nice Lingcod. In the afternoon seas were perfect and the fish were waiting for us to return. Immediately got into the big Olive bite again. Came home with 2/3 limits of pacific snapper plus a big blue Lingcod. Air temp 62 degrees.

INSHORE – Striped Bass (Bass, Striped) are biting from the surf in the early morning or late evening during a moving tide. SP Minnows and Poppers in Blues, Redhead or Purples are productive. Blue colored Swimbaits on a jighead are also working well.
OFFSHORE – The boats are targeting Rockfish and the bite is slow and steady. They are fishing out past the point to Carmel Bay. Lingcod are coming up daily and are legal. 4 lb Vermillions (Rockfish, Vermillion) and Coppers (Rockfish, Copper) are turning up with Bluefish, Olive and Yellows (Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Yellowtail).

Salinas River State Beach Fishing Report
OFFSHORE – Early in the week we had nice water, and fishing was picking up with 3/4 limits of Pacific Snapper (Snapper, Vermillion) and one Lingcod. We hit Jurassic Park mid week and we weren’t disappointed. We got into the Lingcod and BIG Reds right from the start and it went on for a couple hours. Came home with 17 Lingcod and a dozen BIG Red Pacific Snapper to 8 pounds and another dozen or so of quality Olive, China and Blue Pacific Snapper (Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Blue). Yesterday there was a bit of a small Southerly swell which made the fish bite a little slower. Our friends from Chico and San Jose were really enjoying the 60 degree morning and 72 degree afternoon clear as a bellwether. Came home with over half limits of quality Olive, Brown (Rockfish, Brown), Blue and some really BIG Red Pacific Snapper.

INSHORE – Early in the week we had to cancel our Jurassic Park trip due to high winds. Weather was supposed to settle down starting Tuesday. We have a couple Jurassic Park trips going in August that still have seats available. Mid week it started out a bit foggy with a little lump on the water but after an hour or two the weather turned perfect and the fish went on a wide-open bite. Limits of Olive, Brown and BIG Red pacific Snapper (Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Vermillion) PLUS four keeper Lingcod. Must have tossed back a couple dozen fish including a dozen canaries. Next year we are allowed to keep one canary per angler. Recently we had a real nice day on the water. Flat, calm but socked in with fog. Didn’t bother us and it didn’t bother the fish either. We nailed limits of Olive, Brown, Blue (Rockfish, Blue) and BIG Red pacific Snapper along with four Lingcod to 15 pounds.

Salinas River State Beach Fishing Report
OFFSHORE – Early in the week fishing was real good but then around mid morning the bite turned off and came to a crawl. Still managed to get half limits of BIG Blue, Black, and Olive pacific snapper (Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Olive). Recently, there was a little lump on the water but very fishable. Spent a little extra time making bait and got live Squid, Mackerel and Sardines. Headed out to one of our honey holes and whacked the fish good! Limits of olive, blue and BIG red pacific snapper. In fact one of the reds was the biggest anyone’s seen around here in years. Estimated to weigh about 9.5 pounds. We think it was eating small Lingcod. Also brought home four nice lingcod. Great day. Happy 15th Birthday to Dillon!

Salinas River State Beach Fishing Report
OFFSHORE – At the beginning of the week the big South swell was still lingering and the fishing was the slowest we’ve seen all season. This large swell had been teasing us for two weeks now. The good news is this swell is supposed to relax within the week so our fishing and catching should return to normal by the weekend. As of yesterday the South swell be gone!!! Still have a big westerly swell but the fish didn’t mind much today. We had early limits for all plus crew fish of BIG Red, Blue, Brown, Olive, Black and China pacific Snapper (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Starry) and one keeper Lingcod. Great fishing and it went wide open. Also got a couple shows of a giant pod of Dolphins (Dorado), probably 400 of them. Weather forecast for the next five days is flat calm seas and no wind! Going to be a great 4th of July!

OFFSHORE – At the beginning of the week the water was calming down a lot now. Fishing was still slow due to the tore up water from high winds but we did manage to find some quality Black (Rockfish, Black), Olive (Rockfish, Olive) and Red Pacific Snapper (Snapper, Vermillion). Midweek the weather was slightly bumpy but but easily fishable. The action was moderate but consistent with a couple double and triple hook-ups. We put 45 fish on board for 5 anglers and sent a couple short Lings (Lingcod) back. Recently, wind and swell made fishing a bit slow. Couple more days and things should be back to normal.

OFFSHORE – Around the beginning of the week we saw nice days on the water but the nearshore fish were not biting much again. Salmon (Salmon, Chinook) have begun to show up early and some boats are doing quite well. Lately, high winds made fishing difficult and the fish weren’t very happy either. We caught and released one shaker Salmon then came in closer to shore and caught some Rockcod (Rockfish, Greenspotted & Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Vermillion) trips. Salinas River State Beach Fishing Report
OFFSHORE – Started out slow again so we traveled to about six different secret areas until WHAM! The Red Snapper (Rockfish, Vermillion) went on fire and they were BIG! Was pretty wild for about an hour or more with more than 20 Reds of which about a dozen were over four pounds. We also had nice Black, Olive and Brown snapper (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Brown) but the stringer of Reds (not all reds were put on the stringer!) made it our best pacific Red Snapper haul ever. Now for the real good part. The four young men that hauled in these fish were sponsored by a non-profit group for at risk kids and Monterey Bay Charters. These kids won a trip on the MEGA-BITE for graduating this year. These boys were mentored by Lucas Webb and through Luke’s hard work and determination these youngsters went back into school, finished their curriculum and got their degrees. These boys are just 14 years-old. Good job Luke and good job young men! As of late, well, the big south swell was big up at Ano too and the fish weren’t biting much. We did come home with Halibut (Halibut, Pacific), Lingcod and Rockcod and 20 dungeness crabs.

Salinas River State Beach Fishing Report
OFFSHORE – As of Sunday, Weather was flat calm again but the water’s still a bit cold for a wide-open Snapper bite. Fortunately we went for Crabs first and brought in 80 dungeness to three pounds (yes, that’s a lot of crab.) one nice Lingcod and some blue, olive, gopher and brown pacific snapper (Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Gopher & Rockfish, Brown). On Monday we had another flat calm water day and the fish were ready for a fight. The very first drop Alex age 8 brought up a double consisting of a nine pound Lingcod and three pound Red (Rockfish, Vermillion). After that it was pretty much non-stop action for a few hours for limits of blue, olive, brown and red pacific snapper. Great energy from the kids today. Happy birthday Aiden.

OFFSHORE – Ran up to Jurassic Park today and WOW. We smashed the Lingcod catching record today by limiting out on Lingcod to 14 pounds within 40 minutes and that’s including throwing back a dozen shorties that needed to grow! Then we went on to Rockcod (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Starry) fishing and again we were tossing fish in left and right from the get go. Limited out with BIG Blacks, Blues, China, a Tree rockfish which is very rare, copper and olive pacific snapper in about an hour and a half. Talk about a wild and fun day. It was epic. The water was flat calm all day and is supposed to be flat calm the rest of the week. Any takers?

INSHORE – The beaches are holding tons of Bass (Bass, Striped) moving up and down the beaches this week. Most are undersized but there are some keepers if you put some time in. The schools are swimming right up to the wharf.
OFFSHORE – The weather has been hit and miss as of late. Some boaters have had a hard time getting on the water. Those who find a break are still finding limits of Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Black & Bocaccio & Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Greenspotted & Bocaccio) and Lingcod. They can easily be caught on a half day trip. Krill are everywhere this week. We are also seeing some Salmon (Salmon, Chinook) coming from 150 ft. They will continue to move in closer.

OFFSHORE – Keith Semler at Chris’s Fishing Trips in Monterey reported their boats have been catching live bait before heading to the reefs, and they have been able to jig up a combination of live Mackerel (Mackerel, Pacific) or Sand dabs (Sanddab, Pacific). The passengers have been focusing on the Lings (Lingcod), and the Check Mate returned with 3/4th limits of Rockfis (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Black & Bocaccio & Rockfish, Starry) h in addition to 37 Lings for 14 passengers on . Wednesday’s score was even more ling-centric with 37 lings and 1/3rd limits of Rockfish for 20 anglers on the Check Mate. They are filled over the weekend, but the weather on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday may change some plans.

Salinas River State Beach Fishing Report
INSHORE – The Mackerel (Mackerel, Pacific) are hitting early in the morning and anglers are having no trouble loading up. The Stripers (Bass, Striped) have picked back up despite the rain. They are just South of Moss Landing in the Dunes Colony area, and mostly schoolie sized. There are some keepers mixed in if you are fishing them. Darker color swim baits are working best however some days they are taking more Crab. Monster Perch (Surfperch, Barred) are hanging around up to 4 lbs. They are more incidental and sporadic being caught on swimbaits and SP Minnows. We have not seen any Halibut (Halibut, Pacific) yet. Cabezon are turning up here and there along with Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Gopher & Rockfish, Blue) around Lover’s Point. Sharks and Rays are always around but no one is really targeting them.
OFFSHORE – Rockfish and Salmon (Salmon, Chinook) are open offshore now. Anglers are trolling flashers to hook the Salmon. Hoochies, Bait or Apexes are working well. Try Watermelon Apex were working tipped with Anchovy or Herring. The numbers are still slow at this point.

INSHORE – There are quite a bit of Mackerel (Mackerel, Pacific) caught off the pier this week. Salmon (Salmon, Chinook) is open now and they are hitting. They are very light for the size they are however they have a consistent bite. There is not a lot of bait in the bay so Spoon and Hoochies are working best to hook them.
OFFSHORE – Rockfish have been great this week and they are as good as we have seen them. They are scattered everywhere and depending what you are targeting you can go up to 230 ft. The deeper areas will have better Vermillion (Rockfish, Vermillion). Sport anglers are going around 100-150 ft. Anglers will find Lingcod and a variety of other Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Olive).

Salinas River State Beach Fishing Report
INSHORE – The recent Sand Crab Classic Perch Derby illustrated a healthy perch population all around the Monterey Bay. A fringe benefit of that massive Perch (Surfperch, Barred & Surfperch, Redtail) hunt is our realizing how many striped bass are in the bay now. And, how widespread the schools of bass are. On Derby Day, stripers were reported caught everywhere from Del Monte Beach in Monterey, to the Santa Cruz West cliff area. In the weeks since then, Striper (Bass, Striped) reports continue to come in, mostly from beaches south of Manresa and extending to Del Monte Beach. Most of the fish are dinks in the 14-17-inch range, but there are lots of them. Most anglers can bring home at least one keeper over 18 inches if they are in the right spot at the right time. The Striped Bass are hitting in the surf. Because the waves have been big, surface poppers are less effective. These fish will, however, bite a variety of lures including swimbaits, Krokodiles, SP Minnows and Rapalas. Double-digit catch and release reports have been common this past week, though the keeper rate remains low. Stripers grow quickly, and these young fish, released from spawning grounds in the Pajaro and Salinas Rivers, may double in size by summer’s end. With luck, the numbers will remain in our area for summertime surf casting excitement. Dungeness crab fishing is still going strong all through the bay. Chris’ Fishing Trips in Monterey continues to post daily cookie-cutter reports of full crab limits for their clients as well as all the sand dabs their anglers may care to keep. Captain Joe Baxter reported success sport crabbing this week with his son, Shane. The duo were working 200 feet of water off Santa Cruz, and had no problem collecting full limits of big firm male Dungeness. Commercial Dungeness fishing will finally resume this coming weekend, as the levels of domoic acid in the crab has dropped to miniscule or undetectable levels all along our coast.

INSHORE – The Perch (Surfperch, Barred & Surfperch, Redtail) have been fantastic in this area as of late. This was also demonstrated by the results of the recent Sand Crab Classic Perch Derby. There are also reports of tons of schools of Bass (Bass, Striped) scattered throughout the bay. They are all over the place and schooled up. Most of the fish are small at this point, most under 18 inches. There are some keepers but you would have to put some time in to find them. The Bass have been caught as close as the surf. The water still has quite a bit of movement so topwater lures aren’t working. Swimbaits are the key to hooking them this week. Although there are tons of catch and release Stripers, the keepers are few and far between.
OFFSHORE – Dungeness Crab fishing continues this week with great results so far. Everyone is hitting their limits. 200 ft of water has been the ideal depth to search for them.

INSHORE – Things have not changed a whole lot from last week. We continue to see tons of Sanddab, Pacific being caught throughout the offshore. They are still around 250-300 ft. Bait on a Sabiki rig or Sanddab rig will be the best method to hook them. Anglers are also taking advantage of the Dungeness Crab now that they are able to fish them. Halibut, California has come in from the nearshore as well. We would definitely like to see this bite pick up.

INSHORE – The swells have been big and the weather unfavorable Wharf 2 in Monterey is producing Mackerel, Pacific. Sabiki rigs are the perfect method to hook them. There have also been reports of Surfperch, Barred on the beach. Anglers are throwing Perch Crabs to hook them. Rockcod (Rockfish, Olive & Lingcod & Rockfish, Blue) have been turning up off the rocks using Squid as well.
OFFSHORE – Sanddab, Pacific and Crab are the main targets offshore this week. Crab has been great this week. Sanddab can be found from 250 -300 feet. Even deeper sometimes. Bait on a big Sabiki or sanddab rig will hook them well. Some anglers are using Squid. The bite is great so far.

INSHORE – Surfperch, Barred has been the main focus for anglers. They are turning up around 18 inches long and up to 3 lbs. They are catching them from Pismo beach to Morro Bay Strand and even Cayucos area. Anglers are looking for sandy, shallow water around the piers. There has not been a whole lot of other action in this area. Anglers are still Rockfishing (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Black) from the shore in the rocky areas. Morro Bay is holding Shark, Leopard and Ray, Bat however they are a spotty, oddball bite this week.

INSHORE – We are finally seeing some better weather in the area as of late which is allowing anglers to hit the water and take advantage of the beach. From this area they can target Surfperch, Barred and the sizes are increasing by the day. There is tons of sandy space to take advantage of the consistent bite, and there is structure around to find them feeding as well. Throughout the bay you can find them in holes and troughs when they are all schooled up. This will make for a less difficult catch and most anglers are catching their limits. We expect to see some unfavorable weather moving in towards the end of the week however the high surf shouldn’t stop you from getting out.

INSHORE – The recent swells have moved the sand along the Monterey Bay beaches which is great for Surfperch, Sand, anglers as it is creating deep holes, troughs, and good structures for the fish to hold up in. They are turning up in great numbers and although the weather has not been ideal, the fishing is great for anglers who head out. The swells and waves have also brought in a lot of grass, kelp and various debris which has made surfcasting for Perch difficult this week. We hope to see this clear up soon.

INSHORE – Now that Rockfish offshore are closed the main focus has been on the inshore. As follows is the most recent Crab update. DA levels of Dungeness crabs in Monterey were deemed safe back in early December but a test of 6 rock crabs did find an average DA level of just 13ppm with one rock crab testing above the action level. In a nutshell we are seeing a consistent downward trend line with few crabs testing above the federal action levels. Hopefully we see testing in all ports in the coming week and a continuation of safe results. I’m optimistic that we should see both a sport and commercial opener by February 1st.

The top producing lures have been:salt pro minnows, Savage manic prey, Yozuri mag minnows, Rapala X12, X13 and X14 saltwater XRAPS. Other good lures are bucktail kastmasters, pencil poppers, and bucktail jigs. The best baits for Surfperch, Barred are gulp sandworms. Big Hammer or Kalin’s grubs, prawn, blood and pile worms and grass or ghost shrimp and the all-time favorite soft shell sand crabs. Try to fish the latter half of the incoming tide and look for riptides and deeper troughs to set your baits. PIERS/ROCKS: Off the rocks, Cabs, Rockfish, Lings and Perch are available from the west side up the coast into San Mateo county and down past Big Sur. Squid, shrimp and scented artificials have worked the best. Off the piers, some Halibut and Stripers, Perch, Mackerel, Pacific and a variety of smaller fish remain available.

There has also been a solid Mackerel, Pacific bite which can be used as bait for the Rocks and Lings too. Anglers must keep in mind that 240 ft is the Rock limit and they must stay within. Everyone can expect the great bite to carry into the weekend.

Salinas River State Beach Fishing Report
INSHORE – The only thing anglers inshore seem to be catching this week is Mackerel, Pacific from the pier. The weather continues to be pretty bad in this area and the surf is pretty torn up. Crab is still closed and anglers are eagerly awaiting to hear more decisions on the future of season.
OFFSHORE – Due to unfavorable weather conditions there have not been a lot of anglers who have hit the offshore this week. Those who have ventured out reported good counts of Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Lingcod) so far this week. Anglers must use heavy lures to get right down and fight the swells occurring. We expect the bite to continue along with the Bonito, Pacific once the weather lies down.

Salinas River State Beach Fishing Report
INSHORE – The Mackerel swimming last week has moved offshore at this point, but are still fairly easy to find and catch. There have not yet been reports of Surfperch, Barred however we expect they are still out there despite becoming less active this week. With the slow start to the week anglers heading to the inshore can always check out our Tips feature which provides additional information and suggestions to help improve the catch.
OFFSHORE – There has been a lot of quality action on the offshore this week. Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Lingcod) are on fire as boaters are pulling in their limits with weights up to 25 lbs. Squid on bars is working best to hook them on a 5/0 or 6/0 hook. There is lots of bait including Mackerel and Sand Crabs. There have been some reports of Bonito, Pacific as well however the bite has become spotty this week. Anglers are still eagerly waiting for the Crab season to open however at this time it remains closed.
BAIT REPORT – So far this week there are no bait to report.

Salinas River State Beach Fishing Report
INSHORE – There have been Mackerel swimming on the pier and they are pretty easy to catch this week. In the surf there have been plenty of Perch (Surfperch, Barred). The Rockfish (Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Vermillion & Lingcod) bite has been excellent this week. In the bay there are more Rockfish (Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish Blue & Rockfish, Olive) along with Cabezon and more Lingcod.
OFFSHORE – There is not a whole lot of action happening in the offshore this week. Although the weather has improved the water temperature has cooled so a lot of the bite has slowed down. There have not been any reports from the area this week however if anglers are hitting the water for the holidays they can always check out our Tips feature which provides additional information and suggestions to help improve the catch.
BAIT REPORT – Mackerel are running and should not be difficult to catch this week.

Salinas River State Beach Fishing Report
INSHORE – Surfperch, Barred are swimming the beach while Bonito, Pacific have been holding up in the bay. Tuna clones and live bait have been working well to hook them along with Bonito feathers trolling at 5 knots. Rockfish, Starry have been great and anglers can’t seem to go out without hooking one. The bigger boats are heading to 200 ft. where Cabezon and Lingcod are coming in closer. On the South point the Lings and Rockfish, Vermillion bite has been great on irons and live bait as well. It’s more about finding the right spot than the right bait in this area.
BAIT REPORT – Off Wharf 2 anglers can find plenty of Mackerel running this week.

Salinas River State Beach Fishing Report
INSHORE – There has been quite a bit of action inshore lately. Rockfish, Vermillion have had a solid bite and many anglers are bringing them back in. The Perch (Surfperch, barred) continue to be reported from the beach on little worms. Stripers (Bass, Striped) have been coming up in solid numbers when anglers are throwing topwater rattlers or swim baits in the rivers, as well as along the beaches. Cabezon has also been biting on Squid or Anchovies off the rocks. When in a kayak our sources recommend looking for kelp beds as many of these species will be hiding in them.
OFFSHORE – There is not much action happening offshore this week. Bonito, Pacific have come and gone as anglers are having a difficult time finding them. There have also been no reports of Dorado or Wahoo turning up. The temperature change has moved most fishermen inshore at this point.
BAIT REPORT – There are no bait reported to be running at this time however for additional information feel free to check out our Tips feature that provides recommendations on how to improve your catch.

Salinas River State Beach Fishing Report
INSHORE – There are still good quality Rockfish (Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Red) inshore along with some Lingcod in around 30 ft or less. Anglers fishing the surf will find Perch (Surfperch, barred) as well as a good run of Bass, Striped. White swim baits or large 6 inch berkley gulp sand worms are working very well on a Carolina Rig. Anglers are hooking the Striper with the same bait as the perch so it’s not always intentional.
OFFSHORE – The counts have been great in this area with 27 Lingcod – largest at 9.3 lbs, 72 Rockfish, Red and 157 assorted Rockfish. Anglers are using Irons and swim baits in white, orange, chrome and scrambled egg. They have been anywhere from 60-240 ft which is the registered limit. Reefs, rock piles and groggy hard bottoms are the best place to find any of these species.
BAIT REPORT – Mackerel, Anchovies and Sardines are still running however they are starting to become thin. Live baiters are using Sabiki rigs and looking for the birds to find stacks of bait. Coming up December 4th there will be an open tournament sponsored by Papas Jigs and Joe’s Jigs. Your $120 ticket buys you the trip, the boat entry and your first jig. There will be separate categories for Irons and Swim baits. For more information you can call Virg’s Bait & Tackle at 805-772-1222.
