Perth & South Amboy Fishing Report
INSHORE – Short Stripers (Bass, Striped) are swimming the local Beaches from South Amboy to Cliffwood and Union Beach. We are also picking a few Flounder (Flounder, Winter) out of Perth Amboy and Keyport. We haven’t seen any huge numbers as of yet but they are beginning to show up along with a few keeper Stripers. Clams, Sandworms and Bloodworms will be your best bet to hook the Bass. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report to reveal more angling tips and tricks!
OFFSHORE – Tautog are now open however most anglers aren’t targeting them quite yet. Some charters are beginning in roughly 120 feet of water. Reports have been quiet so far.
BAIT REPORT – Bunker (Menhaden) are here but a bit tough to find as of late.

INSHORE – During the Winter season the migratory fish have left the area and the variety of fish available in State waters are slim. Some anglers are still targeting Stripers (Bass, Striped), Tautog, Cod, Atlantic and other fish that are around over the winter. Most Striper trips will start back up around April or sooner. There are still a few of the big boats running Tautog trips when the weather allows. Any of our listed tackle shops would be glad to steer you in the direction of a boat that’s still sailing. As we find varying weather conditions from day to day we encourage all anglers to stay safe and warm when fishing. This is a great opportunity to check out some of the current Pro Angler App features along with new additions coming soon! We look forward to bringing you more great Pro Reports when the bite fires back up!

INSHORE – The boats are mainly fishing for Blackfish (Tautog). Some anglers are finding easy limits with fish to 7 lbs. It’s all weather dependent from day to day. Crabs are working well to hook them. There hasn’t been much from Stripers (Bass, Striped) on the surf. Point Pleasant around the inlet using small bucktails were key. Teasers in front of SP Minnows or Mambo Minnows is a good alternative. Fish up to 25 inches have been caught. Check out the 3 Night Rod Building Class from Feb 6, 8 & 10 from 7-9. Call Brielle Bait and Tackle for details!
OFFSHORE – Anglers will attempt Hake and Cod (Cod, Atlantic) fishing soon. Mackerel (Mackerel, Atlantic), Porgy (Scup) and Pollock will be targeted around Belmar and Point Pleasant as well.

INSHORE – The fishing has been pretty quiet into this week. There are still a few anglers getting Blackfish (Tautog) however the bite is slow. That said, the reef in 40 ft is producing some great numbers. Some days there are still limits being caught in 50-60 ft. It’s cold but they are still there. Not a lot of anglers are targeting what’s left of the Bass (Bass, Striped) bite. The beach has been fairly slow for anglers. As the weather cools most people have decided to stay inside. INSHORE – The beaches have been quiet. The main bite has been the Blackfish (Tautog). Anglers are heading out to Scotland and Sandy Hook Reef using Green or White Legged Crabs. Stripers (Bass, Striped) seem to have left. They were doing well a few weeks ago so it may be a lack of anglers or that the fish have moved out. Prior to the weather, Point Pleasant and Belmar were doing well. Anglers were trolling in the Raritan Bay as well using Rock Candy. Reports are beginning to get slim at this time of year. INSHORE – Raritan Bay’s Striped Bass (Bass, Striped) fishing was excellent with the Down Deep Fleet, Capt. Mario said. A 34-pounder and a 32-pounder were among the catch Sunday, and trips chunked Bunker and live-lined Bunker to catch. Big Blues (Bluefish) to 18 pounds also bit, but plenty of Stripers did to keep anglers happy, and the Stripers were bigger ones, too. Open-boat trips are fishing for stripers daily, reservations required, on the Down Deep Bull, one of the company’s two 40-foot boats. Charters are available, and trips for Cod (Cod, Atlantic), Ling and Winter Flounder (Flounder, Winter) were weathered out last week on the Down Deep, the other boat. Those trips, open-boat, reservations required, are slated to resume Wednesday, and charters are also available for that. Forecasts look better for this week, Mario hopes. Join the Short Notice List on Down Deep’s website to be kept informed about open trips.

OFFSHORE – Capt. Frank from the Vitamin Sea hopes to splash the boat by the third week of March, he wrote in an email. He hopes the mild winter brings on an early Bass, Striped run and some good Flounder (Flounder, Summer (Fluke)) fishing. Though two Flounder is the bag limit, he hopes the limit helps make Raritan Bay the good Flounder grounds it was. He’d like to hear from anybody interested in Flounder fishing, because maybe he’ll set up open-boat trips for the fish, if enough anglers are interested. Flounder are great fun on light tackle and terrific-eating. Afternoon charters will be available this year, in addition to morning charters. Call me anytime if computers and smart phone stuff isn’t your thing.

The supplier of Brabs, for Blackfish (Tautog) bait, stopped potting Crabs for now. No Crabs are stocked, and blackfish season will be closed from Tuesday through March, reopening in April. OFFSHORE – The wind has kept a lot of anglers off the water this week. It should lay down a little by late in the week and into the weekend. There’s still some decent Blackfishing (Tautog) in the area on the deeper structures. Check out our in app GPS Hotspots to see where these are. Green crabs are always the best bait to use for Blackfish. You may have have a hard time finding a shop that has them this time of year but rumor has it Julian’s Bait & Tackle carries them. Once the seas settle down expect there to be some opportunities for Blackfish. Anglers and Captains are reporting good numbers of Cod (Cod, Tommy) near Bayonne Bridge.

OFFSHORE – The party boat Atlantic Star blackfished (Taugtog) every day, Capt. Tom said. The angling wasn’t great, and some good-sized were swung in yesterday, but fewer than he’d like. Throwbacks were released, and current ran strong, and seas were somewhat rolly and cranky, but not bad. That was the final trip, and the boat will go on winter break now. Tom thanks all who fished aboard this fishing season, wishes everybody a safe and happy New Year, and looks forward to resuming fishing in spring. The trips resumed in mid-April the past two years.

INSHORE – A few Blackfish (Tautog) ended up bagged in the afternoon on Saturday’s trip on the party boat Atlantic Star. The fishing began slowly, and didn’t end up good, but two anglers bagged five, and some bagged two or one, and some landed no keepers. On Sunday’s trip, Blackfishing was tough, probably the worst in a while, and worse than on the previous few trips. There was a ground swell, and the trip tried fishing different places. Some anglers couldn’t feel bites in the seas, and some snagged tackle in sticky bottom. Forecasts for wind on Tuesday don’t sound good at all for a trip to sail, and Wednesday will probably be the next time the boat fishes. The wind is supposed to begin today and strengthen on Tuesday. The Atlantic Star is blackfishing 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily, including on New Year’s Day, and Sunday’s trip will be the final for the season, and the boat will go on winter break afterward.

INSHORE – The Bluefish are up and down the beach and running thick. They are catching from the boat and the surf so far this week. They are so thick anglers are having trouble getting the Bass, Striped through all the Blues. The best bite is coming up on down the beach under the birds. The inshore bite is the hottest this week and anything live is working well.
OFFSHORE – The offshore fishermen are targeting Cod, Atlantic this week and are taking in quite a few fish on a good bite. The sizes are decent. Since a lot of the offshore fish are closed or moved out at this point the main focus has been on the great bite inshore. There has also been a great Blackfish (Tautog) bite a bit closer in on the artificial reefs.

INSHORE – There are tons of Bluefish in the area this week reeling in more than 15 lbs! Anglers are having a hard time getting below them for Stripers (Bass, Striped) as the Blue bite is so hot. They are catching them so far on the jig or using swim shads. The bite is continuing through to Sandy Hook as well. The reefs are producing some Blackfish (Tautog) as well however they are not nearly as on fire. The fish are out there if you put your time in.

Perth & South Amboy Fishing Report
INSHORE – The Stripers (Bass, Striped) have begun to bite in the surf. Anglers have been using live Eels and Bunker which are working well. Bunker spoons are working as a great artificial alternative. Some fishermen have been trolling the channels as well. Seabass, Black are also swimming and they are chasing ghost shrimp, clams and most other live baits around the reefs and rocks. Bluefish are still showing up on cut bait or SP Minnows. The rivers are host to plenty of Blue Claw Crab and Menhaden as well.
BAIT REPORT – There are few bait running to report at this time. Menhaden have become a bit scattered in the rivers. For more suggestions that could improve your catch, don’t forget to check out our Tips feature which provides tons of helpful information.
