Morro Bay State Park Fishing Report
OFFSHORE – The long awaited bite is over and Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Yellowtail & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Widow & Rockfish, Canary) are finally open! So far on the three quarter day trip anglers have hooked good numbers of Reds, Coppers, Canary and assorted fish along with decent numbers of 17 Lingcod. So far the Ling count is up to 109 this season as of April 5. Generally metal jigs tipped with Squid will work well to hook them on structured bottom. We hope to see this great bite continue into the weekend.

INSHORE – As anglers wait for Rockfish to open we anticipate that things are heating up nicely. In the meantime, Sanddab (Sanddab, Pacific) and Surfperch (Surfperch, Barred & Surfperch, Redtail) are the main fish to target during this time of year. If you are fishing for them, Bloodworms, Gulp Worms or Lugworms are generally your best bet in shallower, warm areas during the day. We hope to continue to see nice weather until then the Spring bite fires up.

From the surf you can find some Surfperch (Surfperch, Barred) on Big Hammers if you can find a weather window. Gulp baits and Sandworms are working well too. INSHORE – The weather has been too rough for Surfperch (Surfperch, Barred) this week but this is what we would typically see for this time of year. When conditions are a bit more favorable anglers are heading out with Squid or anything scented to attract the fish. Anchovy have a difficult time staying on a hook so it’s a good idea to avoid using them. We hope to see the weather improve into the weekend.

INSHORE – We caught up with Been There Caught That for a fishing report this week, and as you may have heard – and felt, the weather has been way too unfavorable for anglers to be hitting the water from shore or from boats. Normally we see Perch (Surfperch, Barred) hanging around the shore so we hope to see this continue after the storm. Artificial Grubs are generally the best bet to hook them. There are flash flood warnings, high wind and huge waves. We encourage all anglers to take this time to check out some of the great Pro Angler App features and prepare for their next trip when condition are more ideal. We hope to see things improve soon!

They are not as consistent as they have been however they are still out there to catch on half day trips. There are few Reds at this point but still plenty of assorted species. Lingcod continue to do well into this week. They are hotter than the other Rockfish! Metal jigs tipped with Squid sent straight down to the bottom on rocky structure are your best bet to hook them. OFFSHORE – The numbers continue to climb when it comes to the Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Greenspotted) this week. We are especially seeing solid numbers of Reds and Coppers. A few Bocaccio have also turned up lately but seem to have been an incidental catch. Lingcod of course are doing well too. We are not seeing the hot numbers quite yet but we expect some great reports as the season progresses.

INSHORE – The Perch (Surfperch, Barred) are big out of Pismo this week. We are also seeing some Perch coming out of Clam beach and the cliffs. This area will produce some bigger fish. Pirate Cove and Dinosaur Park has been another hot spot. Gulp Camo Sandworm has been the best artificial to throw. Big Hammer 4-5 inch swim baits will work well too. If you go to Been There Caught That and their in stockjigs aren’t exactly how you want them, they’ll make them for you! There are tons of choices and customizable options!
OFFSHORE – We are seeing some great Rockfishing (Rockfish, Red & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Vermillion) Cabezon and Lingcod in this area as of late. This was all caught on a half day trip. The bite has been consistent and the sizes are varied. We expect to see this bite carry into the weekend.

Anglers are using Bloodworms to hook them. Lugworms or Camo gulp will be a productive choice as well. They are being found right off the piers and a bit in the surf. INSHORE – Anglers can begin to watch for Halibut, Pacific on the sandy side of the pier now that the water is warming up even more. The Lucky Crab 110 Flash Minnows in anchovy, aurora calico or anchovy venus are working well. This setup on a Carolina rig bounced off the bottom has produced some great fish from the pier. The bite is hot using this and has been consistent so far.
OFFSHORE – There are quite a few Sea Bass, White and Yellowtail in the area that has not left this year. The water did not get cold enough for fish to leave so they are nice and big at this point. The Lings (Lingcod) will be turning on soon so anglers will pull out the big plastics for those. 9-10 inch swim baits and sea slugs rigged with stingers do an excellent job at catching them.
BAIT REPORT – Anglers are using a Sabiki rigs to catch live bait this week.

The bite is consistent throughout the inshore this week on a full day trip.
OFFSHORE – This area has been hot as of late as we are seeing some Yellowtail turn up in the offshore. This has been the main target of anyone fishing the deeper water this week and we expect this to continue into the weekend.

INSHORE – Surfperch, Barred are hitting off the beach. Bass, Calico have been going off the wall this week. Anglers are having a hard time keeping their lines in the water. They can be found on inshore structure as well as throughout the nearshore. Sand Bass (Bass, Spotted Sand) have been doing great as well in some of the same areas and along the beach. There have also been a few Halibut, Pacific off the beach and on the structured areas too. The surf is producing Rockfish, Olive and Rockfish, Brown. The pier is holding a variety of small Rockfish, Mackerel (Mackerel, Pacific), Bass (Bass, Calico), Sharks (Shark, Leopard, Guitarfish, Shovelnose) and a ton of Ray, Bats. The Bat Rays aren’t picky and can be caught on Squid and Anchovies. New logos and Hook Line & Sinker branded apparel is now in! Stop in and check it out!
OFFSHORE – There have surprisingly been some Triggerfish, Gray caught from the boats recently. This is not normal for the area however El Nino has pushed them inside. They were caught on plastics incidentally while anglers were targeting Bass, Calico.

Morro Bay State Park Fishing Report
INSHORE – This week we are beginning to see the slow start of a Spring fishing pattern. Bass, Calico have been extremely spotty however there have been a few reports of some small sizes turning up. Remembering especially as they are scattered that live bait will be the most productive. Among them in the kelp beds and rocky areas are some Opaleye. Generally they are not a target for recreational anglers but are an important fish for commercial boaters. They are commonly found in shallow waters feeding on algae and smaller bait such as worms. There have also been reports of Halfmoon, another form of Sea Chub which can usually be found in the same areas. If you can get on a good bite it may measure up to 20 inches. They are generally not regarded as great game fish however they are considered good eating by most. The Yellowtail bite has slowed down significantly. We are hardly getting any reports from this area. We are excited to see the fish changing into their Spring patterns, slowly but surely.

INSHORE – Now that Rockfish are closed a lot of anglers have decided to stay inside and plan for next year. There aren’t a lot of people fishing from shore either however those who are can target Bass, Calico and Halibut, Pacific at this time. Halibut will be pretty deep for this time of year and they generally will bite live bait. The Calico are hitting swim baits or live anchovies. They can be found along the coast and around the islands 4-5 miles from shore. Look for kelp and structure to find the best sizes. The Crab situation has not improved at this point however we will keep you updated when things improve.

INSHORE – Unfortunately we have seen a rise in the acidity levels of the Dungeness Crab in the area this week. This is generally the main focus of most anglers during this time of the year. There is not a whole lot of action otherwise however there are some Surfperch, Barred that can be hooked on bloodworms, lugworms or berkley power grubs throughout the beach areas. They generally stick to deeper holes in sandy bottoms where there is a lack of tide. We hope to see the Crabbing season open soon however with the recent results this is not promising.

Surfcasting for Surfperch, Barred is still extremely productive this week and they are coming up in great sizes. Lugworms and berkley gulp are continuing to produce the best results.
OFFSHORE – Things are beginning to slow down on the three quarter day trip off the coast. There were very few Reds (Rockfish, Vermillion) and although there was a decent Rockfish (Rockfish, Copper & Lingcod) bite the numbers were not where they have been the past few weeks. We have not seen any action from closer to the inshore so far this week. We do expect to see some reports by the weekend. Morro Bay State Park Fishing Report
INSHORE – The nearshore continues to produce good sizes of Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion) this week despite the unfavorable weather. The swells and winds have kept a lot of fishermen in the surf which has been spitting out Surfperch, Barred on sand crabs and berkley gulps. There have been no signs of Sea Bass, White hitting so far however this is likely due to the weather, and that they will still be out there when things settle down.
OFFSHORE – There are still some fish swimming in the deep water this week. There have been good numbers of Skipjack swimming along with some Bonito, Pacific. They are both roughly 8 miles out under the birds. There have been no reports so far of Tuna or Yellowtail however it is suspected they are still out there. The weather has not been ideal however once conditions clear up it is expected the bite will increase again.
BAIT REPORT – There are lots of Mackerel running in the offshore this week. Anglers can use them as bait or simply look for them to find fish.

INSHORE – Only 1-2 miles off the coast anglers can find a solid bite of Sea Bass, White in anywhere from 40-100 ft of water. They have been simply trolling the coastline and catching up to a 60 lb fish in a couple different areas. Fresh Mackerel or swim baits are the most effective this week. There have been reports of a few Halibut, Pacific however they have slowed down with the Surfperch, Barred.
OFFSHORE – As the water temperatures have cooled the Bonito, Pacific and Marlin, Striped have dramatically slowed down. Boats have still been catching Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin & Tuna, Yellowfin). Yellowtail and Dorado are in the deep water as well however are spotty at this point. Skipjack have mostly been pushed out although there may be a few stragglers leftover.

INSHORE – There has not been as much action inshore as of late. Lingcod and Rockfish, Vermillion can be caught off the pier for anglers without a boat, however they are quite spotty from this area. Most pier fishers are using shimano flat falls. Perch (Surfperch, barred) are hitting really well on worms or artificials. They are hitting just about anything including glow in the dark squid jigs or berkley camo grubs.
OFFSHORE – The fishing in this area is beginning to slow down a bit however Bonito, Pacific is wide open. They are just about everywhere, scattered throughout various depths. There are also tons of Lingcod as well as Rockfish, Vermillion as well. They have been found in roughly 120 ft of water and doing well using live or frozen Squid. Most anglers are preferring live bait however those who are leaning towards something artificial can be safe with a similar Squid shaped lure.
BAIT REPORT – Squid can be found inshore and are working well for offshore bait. Most of the bait have moved out by now and even the Squid have become spotty at times.
