Long Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – During the Winter season the migratory fish have left the area and the variety of fish available in State waters are slim. Some anglers may still fish for Pollock and Cod, Atlantic. There are not a whole lot of boats still in the water so be sure to check with your local tackle shops to see who is still running trips. For inshore anglers, fishing from docks and piers around NY can yield some great catches of Herring. As long as the bays do not completely freeze over, you should be able to catch them using little more than a rainbow colored Sabiki rig. As we find varying weather conditions from day to day we encourage all anglers to stay safe and warm when fishing. This is a great opportunity to check out some of the current Pro Angler App features along with new additions coming soon. We look forward to bringing you more great Pro Reports when the bite fires back up.

Long Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – This week we expect to see The Cod (Cod, Atlantic) and Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) continue to bite in the nearshore and offshore. Clams and Squid are still going to produce the best bite. If you are fishing the piers you can expect to find some nice bites of Mackerel (Mackerel, Atlantic) this week. They are doing particularly well from Magnolia Pier. They are mixed in with plenty of Herring.

Long Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – With the season winding down we are seeing a quiet bite from this area. Our pals at Comb’s Bait and Tackle have reported that there were some Shad on the beach but they seem to have moved out. If we head towards Montauk there are still some small Stripers (Bass, Striped) on the beach. They are still being caught outside on the troll and using Diamond Jigs. Most of those fish are shorts as well. Blackfish (Tautog) are on the wrecks a bit farther out. Green Crabs are best when they are available. Clams are a great alternative and may catch Cod (Cod, Atlantic) and Ling (Hake) incidentally. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

INSHORE – Stripers are on the beach at West End 2 and Field 6. Blackfishing is good at Hempstead Reef and the Atlantic Reef. When targeting Bass (Bass, Striped), a 3 oz Bucktail is productive on the beach for the small fish. White colors are your best bet with a piece of Pork Rind. Green Crabs are the preference for Blackfish (Tautog) on the reefs. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are doing well on Clams and Squid. They are almost always biting. Search for them in 80 ft around Cholera and the 20 mile wrecks. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

INSHORE – The Fluking [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] is great in the bay around the creeks and corners. If you can find some Bunker schools outside the Bass (Bass, Striped) fishing is really good. Porgy fishing is great as well and although Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) just opened the bite has been strong.

OFFSHORE – Shark (Shark, Thresher & Shark, Shortfin Mako & Shark, Blue) have been hitting well this week. We have also had reports of some Tuna (Tuna, Bigeye) and Bluefins (Tuna, Bluefin) coming in from farther out. There are a handful of Dolphin that have come in but the bite has not quite heated up. Anglers still have to go roughly 75 miles out to find them.

INSHORE – The Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] in the bay is thick but there aren’t many keepers. They are in the bay and the channels this week. Anglers can troll Mojo rigs to find them.

OFFSHORE – Ocean Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] on the reefs and by the tankers is beginning to pick up. A few Sharks (Shark, Shortfin Mako) are being caught but they are not thick yet.

Long Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – Things are a bit slow in the area as of late. Bluefish and Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] are on the beach this week. You will have to put some time in to find the fish, but they are out there. The sizes are varied so far. Some anglers are heading to the West to Queens and Brooklyn for Bass (Bass, Striped). The weather seems to be hit and miss as of late which has made fishing difficult for most people. There has been a lot of washout days. We hope to see some more consistent conditions soon.

BAIT REPORT – A lot of Bunker (Menhaden) are showing up and they are huge sizes. You can fish the deep water.

Long Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – Porgy fishing has been red hot right since Opening Day. As most anglers realize, there has been impressive scup action over the past few years and the trend seems to be continuing with solid numbers being caught on the eastern end of Long Island and some fish pushing 3 pounds. Captain Des of the Celtic Quest says that the pool winners aboard this week have bested the 3-pound mark. The jumbos have been taken off of Jessups Neck, where you’ll also find all the Stripers (Bass, Striped) you can handle according to Steve from Wego and Bryce from White Water outfitters. There are still a large number of 24- to 26-inch bass mixed in but the larger Stripers have begun to claim the territory. Bryce added that Weakfish are now being pulled from both Peconic Bay and Quogue Canal. Although not yet in season, some fair sized Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) and Fluke [Flounder, Summer (fluke)] are being caught and released. Robert from Sea Isle Tackle also has heard of some small fluke being caught inside Jones Inlet, although they weren’t targeted this early in the year. Jones, he added, seems like it is just a few warm days from exploding to life.

INSHORE – There is plenty of Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] in the bay this week. They should be more than ready by opener. Small Bass from 16-30 inches are showing up. They are loving plugs. Bass (Bass, Striped) on the outside are taking Mojos and Bunker Spoons on the troll. There are a couple fish up to 35 lbs. Weakfish have recently moved in and the bite is good. They are from 4-5 lb and love the plastics. We are still missing the Bluefish but we expect them to pick up soon.

OFFSHORE – The weather has not allowed anglers to get offshore at this point. Anglers who are heading out are searching for Lings and Cod (Cod, Atlantic) but the catch is slim. It will be a bit longer before we see things heat up in the deep water

BAIT REPORT – Peanut and Full sized Bunker (Menhaden) are running. There are reports of Spearing as well. They are early but doing well.

INSHORE – Atlantic Beach Reef and the Rockaway Reef are holding some Cod (Cod, Atlantic) along with some Dogfish (Dogfish, Spiny) in this area as well. Stripers (Bass, Striped) are open now. Anglers are trolling in 40 ft of water around the church and off the Rockaways to find them as well as searching East Rockaway Inlet. The sizes are around 32 inches so they’re not bad. Bluefish have also been showing up this week. Spiny Dogfish (Dogfish, Spiny) and Bass are even turning up right off the surf.

INSHORE – The biggest fish in the area you will find are the Flounder (Flounder, Winter). It’s a slow start this week due to the weather however they bays and the inlet are holding some great sizes. There is Bunker in the bay and schoolie Stripers (Bass, Striped) are being brought in 28-30 inches. They officially open on Friday so anglers are getting geared up. The weather improves there should be fish are showing up in the bays, marshes and warmer areas. Once the Bunker heat up at the end of the month we will see bigger sizes of Bass. To the West we are seeing some great sizes so we expect them to begin moving into this area soon.

INSHORE – Stripers (Bass, Striped) are being caught all around Long Island this week. They have been reported up to 24 inches. The bait running in the shallows is a great indication we will see some great Stripers moving in as they will chase anything running. Remember they are catch and release until April. 15. Things are looking good for the upcoming Spring pattern.

OFFSHORE – When the weather is nice enough to head out to the deeper water, anglers are searching for Cod, Atlantic. There have also been Tilefish (Tilefish, Blueline) , Barrelfish, Hake and Wreckfish reported off the bottom. Everyone is excited for the upcoming Spring bite.

BAIT REPORT – The bays and backwater on Long Island is full of baitfish this week. We are seeing Herring, Bunker (Menhaden), and Spearing show up so far. You can find them in the marinas, creeks and bays throughout the island.

Long Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – Weather has made inshore inlets and piers fairly inconsistent. Lingcod and Cod (Cod, Atlantic) can be caught while drifting inshore with clams. The Herring reports have been pretty much nonexistent.. Some areas along Long Island have seen Pollock (Pollock, Atlantic) on red, white, or pink artificials. Diamond jigs are also popular. The Pollock fishing is fairly sporadic so there isn’t really a best spot to fish. At least a bad day of fishin’ beats a good day of workin’. Be sure to check out our Fish Guide for tips on Pollock, Cod, and Lingcod for some additional angling tips!

OFFSHORE – The weather and time of year has made reports limited for this area. Most offshore anglers are heading to water up to 180ft deep while looking for Cod (Cod, Atlantic). There’s going to be some Pollock, Lingcod, and Skates (Skate, Winter) in the same areas. Lately the waters to the west of Long Island haven’t fished as well as waters to the east. Dogfish (Dogfish, Spiny) are usually caught out there too. Check out our GPS hotspots for some nonpublic numbers to try on your next outing. Spring is just around the corner and we’re looking forward to getting back on the water with you when the fishing, and hopefully the weather, heats up!

IN SHORE/PIER – Striped Bass and Tautog have been reported along the beaches and Rockaway reef using superstrike lures and Bucktails.Anglers are also throwing eels for the stripers. If you can find a school of bunker, hopefully you’ll be on to some feeding bass.

    Long Beach Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Bottom fishing for Sea Bass is really good right now, but you have to stay within 3 miles to follow regulations. The season is still open on the Porgies, but they are deep and you’ll really have to hunt for them. The Yellowfin are starting to bite from 30 to 50 miles out during the day. The Canyons have a decent Bigeye bite right now, and it’s mostly by chunking.

IN SHORE/PIER – There have been some False Albacore and a lot Bluefish around the inlets. The Albacore and Bluefish are responding really well to the Diamond Jigs and Deadly Dicks lures. You can chum the Albacore, but when you find them you’ll have better luck casting the tins out to them. The Bluefish have definitely been better on the inbound tide.

BAIT REPORT – There are some Peanut Bunker and outside of the inlet there are some adult Bunker.

OFFSHORE – Right now the Ocean fishing is hot. There are quite a few Yellowfin Tuna and Mahi out at the Canyons. The Tuna are very aggressive right now and are being taken by way of Spreader Bars and Daisy Chains. The 6 in tube squid/shell squids are where it’s at. The colors don’t seem to matter that much, try yellow, orange, or green.

IN SHORE/PIER – Things are slow right now, the heavy winds and warm sun are keeping the fish away. Bluefish and Striped Bass are biting plugs. Sharks are heavy on the Beach right now. When rigging for Sharks use 150 pound to 200 pound leader with a 10/0 hook baited with Bunker.

    Long Beach Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – 3-3.5 miles offshore near the wrecks and reefs to the East there are a few Fluke. The Fluke are biting Spearing and frozen Squid. The bigger fish are South West closer to Cholera and Middle Grounds is where they have been catching more fish. Over by Ralph’s Tackle- in the Reefs- the fish are grouping together. There’s a lot of fish there, but you’re going to have to go through a lot of small fish to hook just a few bigger fish.

INSHORE/PIER – As long as you can find the Bunker there will be plenty of Snapper, Cocktail Blue Fish, Little Striped Bass.

BAIT REPORT – Frozen Squid is good to use. Peanut Bunker and Blue Crabs have been pretty thick and there’s always some Spearing around.

Ralph’s Tackle & Sporting makes a great version of a hi/lo rig, stop in and give it try.

    Long Beach Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – The reefs out from Long Beach are holding some Porgies, Triggerfish, Fluke, and Seabass. Spearing and Squid are working well for the deeper Fluke. Peanut Bunker is another great bait for Fluke found in bigger water.

INSHORE – Small Fluke have been over by Magnolia Pier. There’s plenty of Snapper Blues all over. The Fluke have been taking Spearing. Bluefish anglers have been able to to pull fish by putting plugs in front of them; colors such as Yellow, White, and Black/Silver.

BAIT REPORT – Peanut Bunker and Spearing are some of the baitfish that can be caught around the inshore structures and shorelines. A Sabiki Rig or a Cast Net work well.

    Long Beach Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Buoy 4 has some Porgy, and Seabass. Buoy 4 also has a few Fluke, but not many. Ambrose Channel had a few Fluke as well. Following the inshore trend, most fish have been on the smaller side with not many keepers. When the temperature gets really warm, the bigger fish will shut down. The bigger fish all go to the East when the temperature rises. We’re about 70 miles from the tip of the canyon and they’ve had some big fish out there. A couple of White Marlin, Big Eye Tuna, and Bluefin Tuna. For Marlin, they’re catching them at night. A lot of trolling is being done right now. Ballyhoo is working for some guys right now. Daisy chains, Big sluggos, Big ol’ green machines. Mainly the new thing is a lot of guys up north pull big 12 inch sluggos.

INSHORE – The hottest fish from the shore would probably be Cocktail Bluefish. There’s some Fluke, however, most of them are under 18 inches. 15 to 17 inch Fluke are very common, but there are some keepers hiding in with the shorts. A lot of guys are catching the keeper sized Fluke on Spearing. Gulp is proving to be a great alternative to the live bait. The gulp colors being used are mainly white or chartreuse.

BAIT REPORT – Spearing is the most useful bait to be caught right now. Squid and clams are also being used. If you’re not looking to catch your own spearing, you can purchase from our bait shop.
