Jones Beach State Park Fishing Report
INSHORE – During the Winter season the migratory fish have left the area and the variety of fish available in State waters are slim. Some anglers may still fish for Pollock and Cod, Atlantic. There are not a whole lot of boats still in the water so be sure to check with your local tackle shops to see who is still running trips. For inshore anglers, fishing from docks and piers around NY can yield some great catches of Herring. As long as the bays do not completely freeze over, you should be able to catch them using little more than a rainbow colored Sabiki rig. As we find varying weather conditions from day to day we encourage all anglers to stay safe and warm when fishing. This is a great opportunity to check out some of the current Pro Angler App features along with new additions coming soon. We look forward to bringing you more great Pro Reports when the bite fires back up.

INSHORE – This week we expect to see The Cod (Cod, Atlantic) and Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) continue to bite in the nearshore and offshore. Clams and Squid are still going to produce the best bite. If you are fishing the piers you can expect to find some nice bites of Mackerel (Mackerel, Atlantic) this week. They are doing particularly well from Magnolia Pier. They are mixed in with plenty of Herring.

INSHORE – With the season winding down we are seeing a quiet bite from this area. Our pals at Comb’s Bait and Tackle have reported that there were some Shad on the beach but they seem to have moved out. If we head towards Montauk there are still some small Stripers (Bass, Striped) on the beach. They are still being caught outside on the troll and using Diamond Jigs. Most of those fish are shorts as well. Blackfish (Tautog) are on the wrecks a bit farther out. Green Crabs are best when they are available. Clams are a great alternative and may catch Cod (Cod, Atlantic) and Ling (Hake) incidentally. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

INSHORE – Stripers are on the beach at West End 2 and Field 6. Blackfishing is good at Hempstead Reef and the Atlantic Reef. When targeting Bass (Bass, Striped), a 3 oz Bucktail is productive on the beach for the small fish. White colors are your best bet with a piece of Pork Rind. Green Crabs are the preference for Blackfish (Tautog) on the reefs. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are doing well on Clams and Squid. They are almost always biting. Search for them in 80 ft around Cholera and the 20 mile wrecks. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

INSHORE – The Fluking [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] is great in the bay around the creeks and corners. If you can find some Bunker schools outside the Bass (Bass, Striped) fishing is really good. Porgy fishing is great as well and although Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) just opened the bite has been strong.
OFFSHORE – Shark (Shark, Thresher & Shark, Shortfin Mako & Shark, Blue) have been hitting well this week. We have also had reports of some Tuna (Tuna, Bigeye) and Bluefins (Tuna, Bluefin) coming in from farther out. There are a handful of Dolphin that have come in but the bite has not quite heated up. INSHORE – Things are a bit slow in the area as of late. Bluefish and Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] are on the beach this week. INSHORE – Porgy fishing has been red hot right since Opening Day. As most anglers realize, there has been impressive scup action over the past few years and the trend seems to be continuing with solid numbers being caught on the eastern end of Long Island and some fish pushing 3 pounds. Captain Des of the Celtic Quest says that the pool winners aboard this week have bested the 3-pound mark. The jumbos have been taken off of Jessups Neck, where you’ll also find all the Stripers (Bass, Striped) you can handle according to Steve from Wego and Bryce from White Water outfitters. There are still a large number of 24- to 26-inch bass mixed in but the larger Stripers have begun to claim the territory. Bryce added that Weakfish are now being pulled from both Peconic Bay and Quogue Canal. Although not yet in season, some fair sized Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) and Fluke [Flounder, Summer (fluke)] are being caught and released. Robert from Sea Isle Tackle also has heard of some small fluke being caught inside Jones Inlet, although they weren’t targeted this early in the year. Jones, he added, seems like it is just a few warm days from exploding to life.

They are from 4-5 lb and love the plastics. We are still missing the Bluefish but we expect them to pick up soon.
OFFSHORE – The weather has not allowed anglers to get offshore at this point. Anglers who are heading out are searching for Lings and Cod (Cod, Atlantic) but the catch is slim. It will be a bit longer before we see things heat up in the deep water

INSHORE – Weather has made inshore inlets and piers fairly inconsistent. Lingcod and Cod (Cod, Atlantic) can be caught while drifting inshore with clams. The Herring reports have been pretty much nonexistent.. Some areas along Long Island have seen Pollock (Pollock, Atlantic) on red, white, or pink artificials. Diamond jigs are also popular. The Pollock fishing is fairly sporadic so there isn’t really a best spot to fish. At least a bad day of fishin’ beats a good day of workin’. Be sure to check out our Fish Guide for tips on Pollock, Cod, and Lingcod for some additional angling tips!
OFFSHORE – The weather and time of year has made reports limited for this area. Most offshore anglers are heading to water up to 180ft deep while looking for Cod (Cod, Atlantic). There’s going to be some Pollock, Lingcod, and Skates (Skate, Winter) in the same areas. Lately the waters to the west of Long Island haven’t fished as well as waters to the east. Dogfish (Dogfish, Spiny) are usually caught out there too. Check out our GPS hotspots for some nonpublic numbers to try on your next outing. INSHORE – The beach has been holding plenty of Stripers (Bass, Striped) and Bluefish from Fire Island to the Rockway. They have been on the schools of Bunker (Menhaden). If you find the bait you find the fish, especially in the morning. Live baiters have been live lining Bunker as well as trolling. At night they can easily find fish by drifting under bridges and inlets with eels. In the surf, Bunker chunks and popping plugs are far more effective in this area.
OFFSHORE – In the deeper water anglers can fish the offshore wrecks for Blackfish (Tautog) and Sea Bass, Black. They are just under keeper sized so our sources suspect they should be within very shortly.

Blackfish (Tautog) and Cod, Tommy are also hanging out on the wrecks farther out at 150-180 ft of water. Closer in, anglers can expect to see some Porgies (Porgy, Jolthead) as well. Shore fishermen are using Bunker and Clams as the bait of choice. Stripers have also been throughout the inlets taking live Eels. Anglers are also trolling with umbrella rigs and shad rigs or casting lures with bucktails and swimmers or plugs to catch them. As a live bait they are absolutely loving clams.
OFFSHORE – The weather has been rough in this area lately however this has not stopped some determined boaters from heading out. There have been reports of Tuna, Yellowfin at the canyon. They are out there and anglers are chunking for them using Butterfish or Sardines. The early morning and late day bite still remains the best.
BAIT REPORT – The Mullet run has continued this week as small bait are moving out and around the beach. The Sand Eels have pretty much disappeared however there are still some Menhaden and Clams to be caught.

Jones Beach State Park Fishing Report
INSHORE – The fishing in the shallow water has been spotty but that has not prevented tons of anglers from heading out for Bass, Striped. Most of the action is happening towards Brooklyn however there are still some spots that are hitting well in this area. The water and weather temperatures are still warm so most of the Bass are still fairly small, and not many have moved inwards. A lot of anglers are fishing the Bunker schools however keep in mind, if you don’t get a bite after 10-15 minutes, there is likely no Bass underneath at this point. Drifted Eels are working well at night. SP Minnows are also a great artificial alternative. There are expected to be some Tautog out there as well hitting Green Crabs however everyone is focused on the Bass.
OFFSHORE – There’s still some Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin & Tuna, BigEye) in the Canyons. When conditions lay down and fishermen decide to head to the deeper water they can always consult our Tips feature which provides additional suggestions and information that could help improve the catch. Alternatively Great South Bay Bait & Tackle can provide an up to the minute fishing report if anglers have managed to make their way out.

Jones Beach State Park Fishing Report
INSHORE – There is a solid mixed bag of fish in the shallower water. Bass, Striped are biting live eels at night or needlefish plugs and SP Minnows as an artificial alternative. They are swarming the beaches and also great trolling in about 40 ft of water. They have been hitting Bunker Spoons as well. Blackfish are hiding in the reefs along with jumbo Seabass, Black. The Blackfish are eating Greencrabs and the Bass are chowing down on clams, diamond jigs or berkley gulp Mullets. They are definitely not picky right now.
OFFSHORE – Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin & Tuna, Albacore) could not get any better, especially with the nice weather. They have had a great bite lately for anglers that are mostly chunking using Butterfish or Sardines. The best times to head out on the water are either morning or evening since there has not been much action throughout the day. White Water Outfitters www.whitewateroutfitters.net 631-594-3336
BAIT REPORT – There continues to be a good Menhaden run along the beaches. Anglers are snagging and dropping them. There is lots of new Fall gear at LI Outdoorsman in the fishing department so make sure you take a look before you head out this season.
