Hernando Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – Despite the wind anglers are still able to make it on the water during weather windows this week. Redfish and Trout are the usual contenders making an appearance for anglers so far. Reds are schooled up, especially towards Sarasota, but are becoming more scattered once we reach Tampa. Searching shallower water will be the key to finding them. The Trout on the other hand seem to be just about everywhere and ready to take a live Shrimp or an artificial such as MirrOlure. Snook are consistent into this week. Passes and beaches are holding the best sizes. There are a few Pompano that may be caught as bycatches on the beaches. They aren’t picky in terms of what they are eating, so anglers heading out shouldn’t have a problem loading up. Structure is holding the typical Snapper and Sheepshead up to 15 miles out. This comes as no surprise to most anglers. Beyond this Kings are beginning to make their way in close and should progress on this trail throughout the season.

OFFSHORE – The weather has made fishing tough into this week however when anglers are able to make it offshore they are finding a decent bite of typical, seasonal fish. The bottom bite is producing Grouper (don’t forget to check your Pro Angler App for updated regulations) and Snapper beginning in 30 feet of water. There hasn’t been many anglers heading farther offshore however Kings, Spanish and Cobia are a bit more accessible for anglers this week. Searching the causeway and trolling live bait has been the ticket to hook Kings up to 20 pounds out of Clearwater. The farther out you can go the better the sizes will be however there are a few smokers mixed in the bunch. You’ll find the Spanish are schooled up so when you find one you’ll likely find many. If you find anglers are chumming, they are likely targeting Cobia in areas like Sarasota. A bit of chum and some live bait is a killer combination to land them from the reefs. We hope to see these fish fire up once conditions are improved.

INSHORE – The bite is fairly typical for this time of year. On the flats we are seeing some Cobia. They have been caught around Anclote. Small Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are swimming with few keepers. Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) are on the flats. Snook (Snook, Common) and Redfish (Drum, Red) are inshore.

OFFSHORE – There is still some decent action offshore this week. Grunts (Grunt, White) and Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are swimming near shore. Farther out the Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater) and keeper Red Grouper (Grouper, Red) have been caught. Sharks are beginning to move in.

BAIT REPORT – There is plenty of Whitebait around.

Hernando Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Pompano bite is really hot right now along the jetties of John’s Pass and the beaches however it is a bit scattered towards Sarasota and thicker towards Clearwater. These Pompano are great eating too, and bite best in the early morning or just before dark. The Snook action has been hit and miss, they really fire up but then as quickly as they start it ends. We’ve seen some monsters caught inside the passes along the beaches. The Mackerel have made their way into the bay and around bridges.
Trout, Snook, Tarpon and Redfish are beginning to get fat again. Reds can be found chasing bait around mouths of rivers and particularly in Longboat taking Shrimp. Trout are more preferring artificials such as MirrOdines, Vudu Shrimp and DOA Shrimp. Sheepshead and Drum have been caught on structure taking Fiddler Crabs or Shrimp on a knocker rig.

OFFSHORE – There is something to catch just about everywhere offshore this week. From 50-70 feet offshore there have been great catches of both Kings and Cobia. We are seeing them consistently caught from Sarasota to Homosassa.
On the bottom, the Grouper and Snapper are doing extremely well, although keep in mind what regulations are in place for them. Grouper can be targeted with Shrimp or Squid while Snapper prefer Sardines or Whitebait while chumming heavy. Ajs are providing a great catch and release bite for anglers out for some fun.

Hernando Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – Nothing is out of the ordinary so far this week. Although the bite is typical we can’t argue with how good it’s been. As Snook are swimming the rivers anglers are targeting them under the lights and also around passes. Keep an eye out as they will make their way to the beaches very soon in the Clearwater area.
Redfish and Trout are almost a never-fail catch. Slot Reds are loving areas such as Terra Ceia or around spoil islands. Trout are opposingly in deeper waters around edges of the grass flats, spoil islands and occasionally running flats on the beach for warm water pockets. The occasional Pompano and Spanish Mackerel are also on the beaches.

OFFSHORE – The variety of fish is improving this week. Anglers are finding fish nearshore, offshore on the bottom, just about everywhere! If you can find a weather window to head farther offshore the Tuna bite is turning on. Blackfin can be found roughly 30 miles out of Sarasota while if we look to St. Petersburg the Yellowfin are active farther on the long range overnight trips. Moving closer in, the Kings are biting well. A few of them can be caught mixed in with offshore Tuna however most of them are more towards the shipping channel areas chasing live bait. Of course, Cobia aren’t far behind as they are even closer holding up on nearshore wrecks and reefs.
The typical bottom bite is nothing new for anglers in the area. Snapper are beginning to gear up for an aggressive feeding coming very soon. The sizes are expected to be great. Grouper and Hogfish are consistently turning up while specifically targeting them, especially in the Clearwater area. Scattered Sea Bass and Grunts may be caught as well.

Hernando Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – Snook have a been a little difficult to find in keeper sizes. There has been a lot of catch and release angling from Sarasota up in to Tampa. Try to find moving water and fish to structure just before high or low tide as they move out to feed. Bluefish, Ladyfish and Jacks have been a common bycatch out of the Sarasota area. Trout fishing has been just ok. If you were to pick only one place to Trout fish this week, you might best head to Sarasota where you will also have the opportunity to hook some Flounder while fishing with MirrOlures oddly enough. Redfish have been steady across Florida’s Central West coast. They are especially moving well down the river with Snook near Clearwater and caught or the oyster bars up in Homosassa. Tarpon have been heating up in Tampa Bay. Cobia anglers out of Hudson have been catching fish on the Flats.

OFFSHORE – We’re still waiting for King Mackerel to show up here. There is a decent Grouper and Snapper bite on the days you can get out around 10 miles. Best baits to take this week are Sardines and Squid. The Grouper off of Clearwater have been particular to Pinfish. There is also a worthwhile amount of Amberjack on structure off of Hudson.

Hernando Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Snook bite has been HOT HOT HOT just about everywhere through Florida’s Central-West coast. Tide direction hasn’t affected the bite, just as long as there’s moving water. There will also be Redfish mixed in with the Snook. Redfish have been a little sporadic to the south, they improve around the west side of Tampa on Greenbacks or cut bait such as Pinfish. You can find them schooled up on both low tide and high tide. Trout fishing has been fairly decent through the day. There has even been a lot of Trout taken on Rapala Topwaters. Pompano anglers have been finding most of their action coming from sandbars in Tampa Bay while throwing jigs.

OFFSHORE – You will have to head pretty deep to find any sizeable Red Grouper right now, starting in at least 150 feet of water. Amberjack have been hauled off of bottom structure much closer in while Sheepshead have been on the nearshore structures. There has been a lot of Kingfish around St. Petersburg, we expect this to pick up as the warmer weather comes.

Hernando Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – Despite the weather it seems we can almost always hook a few nice Redfish and Trout. The Redfish are still a bit scattered at this point but if you put some time in anglers should be able to find a few decent fish. Live bait has been the ticket to catch them, with a select few artificials including Spoons and soft plastics in Shrimp patterns working well. Trout can be found in any of the shallower areas from Sarasota all the way down to Homosassa.
Snook are fairly consistent this week as well. They seem to be taking just about everything, however live bait at night is producing well. Sheepshead are beginning to really fire up on structure as usual. In St. Petersburg there are a few reports of Flounder mixed in. They are preferring live bait.
On the surf anglers are finding Pompano here and there.

OFFSHORE – Everything is in close this week. Blackfin Tuna are holding up in the deeper Springs this week and can be caught trolling with artificials. On the bottom the Amberjack and Grouper are biting in the same depths. Ajs have had the most consistent bite down the coast this week. As usual, structure is the best place to search for them.
A bit closer in we are finding a productive bite of Snapper, Hogfish and Grunts. The variety of Snapper include Muttons, Lanes and Mangroves. The numbers were great prior to the recent weather and we expect they should pick back up. When anglers can make it farther offshore the bite of Vermilion and Yellowtail Snapper are putting up a good fight.

Hernando Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – From inside Tampa Bay out to John’s Pass there is a good Sheepshead bite. Trout are found near inshore troughs during low tides on Shrimp or Greenbacks fished under a popping cork. The best reports on Snook have come from Sarasota over to St. Petersburg. Live baits such as Pinfish or Shrimp will work well to hook them. Inshore anglers targeting Redfish have had the most success off of docks in the rivers, oyster beds throughout intracoastal waterways. The flats around New Port Richey as well as up near Homosassa will provide anglers with a decent Redfish bite on cut bait and Pinfish.
It’s worth making the trip to Sarasota as the Skyway bridge has been offering up some Cobia.


OFFSHORE – The gulf of Mexico has been kind to offshore boats this week. Amberjack have been fishing well on wrecks for anyone using Sardines. If you are headed out of St. Pete’s, target wrecks in 100 ft of water. Out of New Port Richey you will want to be fishing in 50-80 ft. There will also be an assortment of Grouper and Snapper here as well. Yellowtail Snapper have been biting well on structure in the 30 mile range.
From 7-15 miles, anglers in this region can expect to find Hogfish as well as some small Grouper and Snapper. Triggerfish are spread out on reefs and wrecks as you fish your way into the gulf. Keep in mind that they are catch and release at this time. Nearshore trolling with soft plastics has been productive for King Mackerel.

Hernando Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – Sheepshead are biting this week. They are taking Shrimp however anglers are finding more success with Fiddler Crabs. You can typically find them holding up on structure and rock piles. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Ladyfish are swimming the flats. Use Shrimp or Zman Swim Jigs to hook them. These are the main bites in this area. Snook (Snook, Common) are in deeper water or the upper Tampa Bay. Most anglers are focusing on the Sheepshead as they are on fire. They are doing particularly well in Whedon. Hernando Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – Winter time is a good time. Pompano (Pompano, Florida) are moving into the gulf and around Honeymoon Island and Dunedin Causeway. They are right on the surf chasing Sand Fleas and Crabs. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Snook (Snook, Common) are doing well in the causeway, bay and gulf. Flounder (Flounder, Southern) is improving on the gulf around Sand Key and Honeymoon. Straggler Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) are swimming. Grouper has been caught around the Skyway bridge. They are up to 20 lbs. INSHORE – Anglers are doing well on Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Reds (Drum, Red) into this week. There are even some Sheepshead and Jacks (Jack, Crevalle) showing up. Live Shrimp is the key bait so far, especially for the Trout and Reds. Savage Gear 3D Shrimp is a good artificial alternative. MirrOlures are also a great choice for the Trout. Hernando Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – With the approaching cold front you’ll want to look for Snook (Snook, Common) and Redfish (Drum, Red) deeper in the river. Start in Anclote at the Sponge Docks and move in. The deeper, the better. Dock hopping with Shrimp on a jighead or a Split Shot under the docks is hooking Redfish, Snook and bycatches such as Sheepshead, Drum (Drum, Black) and Snapper (Snapper, Gray). Docks with deeper moving water underneath and sun hitting them directly will be successful. There are still Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) on the flats. Early mornings with topwater Spook Jr. in Bone or Silver is working well. The Spoil Islands down the St. Joseph Sound using bucktails is also productive.

OFFSHORE – Grouper (Grouper, Gag) are providing great catch and release fishing in 15-45 ft of water. Snapper (Snapper, Gray) are in the same depth. Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater) are farther out between 70-100ft.

Hernando Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – The last few weeks the fish are in the mouths of the rivers along with the flats where the warm water is. Redfish (Drum, Red), Snook (Snook, Common), Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Cobia are swimming taking scaled Sardines and Shrimp. With the upcoming fronts anglers should head up the river and keep working your way up. Drum (Drum, Black) and Sheepshead can be expected to bite along with Snook (Snook, Common), Redfish, Flounder (Flounder, Southern) and Snapper (Snapper, Gray). You’ll have to put your time in dock hopping the good areas. Thanks for another great year anglers! Pro Angler is looking forward to seeing all of your great catches in 2017!

OFFSHORE – The Grouper (Grouper, Gag) bite is phenomenal. Man Stretch 25s and 30s in 20-30 ft of water. The Gags are up to 40 inches. Drop live bait over top the rock piles. Pinfish and Scaled Sardine are working well. Hogfish are biting if you weed through everything else. Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater) are in the 1600 ft range. BAIT REPORT – Scaled Sardine can be found off the Anclote Power Plant on the flat just North of the plant. Look for Pelicans and chum them up.

INSHORE – Anglers are doing well with Mud Minnows for Reds (Drum, Red) and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) this week. Everything is coming in as the weather drops. There are quite a bit of Jacks (Jack, Crevalle) mixed in as well. Sheepshead are beginning to fire up. We are seeing a nice variety of fish here. INSHORE – This week are seeing a nice mixed bag of fish. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted), Redfish (Drum, Red), and Drum (Drum, Black) are all holding up on the flats. So far live Shrimp and DOA Shrimp are the hot baits. Work them slowly on a jig for the best bite. The incoming tide has been producing the most active fish. Towards the Anclote Power Plant the Pompano (Pompano, Florida), Permit, Bluefish, Redfish and Black Drum are all being caught this week. INSHORE – Fish are moving into the river with the colder weather. Search mid river docks to the deeper river towards the Golf Course. Docks, Mangrove Dropoffs and Seawalls are best as they hold heat. Live Shrimp and slow moving artificials are best to catch Redfish (Drum, Red) and Snook (Snook, Common). Sheepshead, Drum (Drum, Black) and Snapper (Snapper, Gray) are all being caught as well. OFFSHORE – The Grouper (Grouper, Gag) bite has gone shallow. You can consistently get limits from 10-30 ft of water. The best way to find them is trolling Stretch 25 or 30 diving plugs in Gold and Natural colors such as Sardine. Then once you get a hit, turn around and drop live bait and patriot jigs on top of the rocks. Tripletail are coming in thick. You can find them running the Crab Trap buoys. BAIT REPORT – Bait is becoming nonexistent. Mullet are tough to find. Pinfish are still around and can be caught in traps.

INSHORE – Cobia are swimming the Stilt Houses both inside and outside. Mangroves (Snapper, Gray) and Flounder (Flounder, Southern) can be found as well. Bigger Shrimp are working well to catch the Reds (Drum, Red) and Snook. YoZuri Shallow Diver sor Spinning Twitch Baits are great alternatives. Pompano (Pompano, Florida) and Permit are beginning to show up at the plant. Jacks (Jack, Crevalle) have returned as well. Jacks are taking topwater and suspended baits. OFFSHORE – Red Grouper (Grouper, Red) are in 30-40 ft or more. There are some Gags (Grouper, Gag) way inshore off the channels up and down the coast. INSHORE – Snook (Snook, Common) are in the mouth of the canals. Live bait is your best bet to hook them. Redtail Hawks are also good to throw. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Redfish (Drum, Red) are on the flats. Fish them during high tide. Search the Anclote Power Plant. Jacks (Jack, Crevalle) are all over the place. INSHORE – The Cobia bite and inshore Grouper (Grouper, Gag) bite has been on fire. Cover a lot of ground throwing jigs. The Cobia have even been found in 5-6 ft of water and any rock piles. Patriot Jigs are working very well. The Redfish (Drum, Red) bite is still going on at the mouths of the rivers. Cut bait on the bottom is the best method to get at them. Hernando Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – As the water cools down we are seeing fish closer to the shore. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted), Redfish (Drum, Red) and Snook (Snook, Common) are around the bay, park, mouth of the Anclote River and the East side of Anclote Island. Plenty of Mackerel (Mackerel, Spanish) are on the flats. Kings (Mackerel, King) are here and there. They are as close as 12 miles on the artificial reefs. Cobia are in. Pompano (Pompano, Florida) and Permit are swimming the power plant. The Stilt Houses and Pilings are holding Mangroves (Snapper, Gray). The sand grass flats are holding Flounder (Flounder, Southern). Drum (Drum, Black) are swimming the rivers and Brasher Park and down towards the power plant. Big Sheepshead are coming out of the Anclote River. It’s been too rough to head offshore. INSHORE – The Redfish (Drum, Red) bite is on fire the past few weeks. Shrimp, cut Pinfish and Scaled Sardines are best. Search the Spoil Islands, mangrove ledges, deeper cuts and oyster beds. Anywhere in the shallow waters is a nice Redfish bite. Jacks (Jack, Crevalle) are showing up in bigger schools as well as Cobia moving across the flats. They are in 5-6 ft of water. OFFSHORE – Anglers are heading out to target Kings (Mackerel, King) when they can find breaks in the wind. They are anywhere from 20 to 100ft and deeper. Troll live Bluerunners or Cigar Minnows for the best sizes. The Grouper (Grouper, Gag) bite is hot as well. Trolling stretch 20s and 30s is the best bet to hook them. INSHORE – The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) haven’t really turned on yet. You can catch a lot of them but they are small. We won’t see more until the water cools down. Then we will see them in 2 ft of water, it’s a great time of year for them. There are plenty of Redfish (Drum, Red) in various sizes. Snook (Snook, Common) are biting. There are a lof Black Drum (Drum, Black) biting. The Sheepshead have not started yet but Nice sized Mangroves (Snapper, Gray) are in the canals and creeks. Hernando Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Redfish (Drum, Red) bite is in full force this week around the Spoil Island and Anclote area. Howard Park all the way to Brasher Park are holding big schools of Redfish on the flats. Cut Pinfish on the bottom, Scaled Sardine or Shrimp and Pinfish are working well to hook them. Artificials in the early morning using Spooks in Silver or Gulp on a jighead work well. The Snook (Snook, Common) bite is still on. They are no longer on the island or beaches spawning, they are in the mouths to halfway up the river. OFFSHORE – The water temperatures are cooling down and the Kings (Mackerel, King) have moved in! A slow trolled Blue runner, Threadfin or Scaled Sardine will work well. INSHORE – The bigger bait has moved back in so Redfish (Drum, Red), Snook (Snook, Common) and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) have been great the past few days. Fish around the Spoil Islands leaving the river, some of the oyster beds, and grass potholes for the best bite. Redfish are up to 27 inches, Snook are up to 35 inches and Trout are up to 20 inches. INSHORE – The fishing has been a bit slow due to the weather pattern moving in. We have not had many reports as anglers are mostly staying inside. There were some Snook (Snook, Common) being caught in the passes, beaches and around the bridges using Bucktails on a jig. We hope to see this heat up with the rest of the bite after the system moves through. Hernando Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – Anglers are doing well on Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) both inshore and offshore. There are still some Cobia inshore as well. There are plenty of small Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) swimming but if you hunt around you’ll find some decent fish. The early, high tide bite is best, especially before light. The water cools overnight. Topwater plugs will do the trick if they are around. When the sun comes up you can switch to live bait. There are a lot of Drum (Drum, Black) being caught while fishing for Redfish and Sheepshead. They are all over the place this year. Snook (Snook, Common) are not open however anglers are finding them around the islands and on the sandy beaches to the South.

INSHORE – A lot of big Snook (Snook, Common) are around the bridges and the causeway this week. Big Pinfish or Pigfish will work best as well as a 2 oz Pumpkin or First Light jig. Hernando Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – The early morning or late evening bite is better due to the hot weather. Snook (Snook, Common) are on the islands breeding. They will bite at night on Pigfish or Pinfish. If you go out during the day the Snapper (Snapper, Gray) are biting on docks or inshore rock piles. Use the small Whitebait.

OFFSHORE – Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater), Snapper (Snapper, Gray) and Grouper (Grouper, Gag) are on all the wrecks. The Gags are harder to catch less than 100 ft of water. Reds (Grouper, Red) are between the 50-80 ft mark. Look for the swiss cheese bottom on the depth finder. Live Pinfish, Squirrelfish or dead, frozen Sardines are working well for bait. Ajs on the wrecks are loving the Pinfish.

Hernando Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – We have seen the Mangroves (Snapper, Gray) moving inshore. Search structures such as rock piles and docks. They range from 14-16 inches. Throw small Fry Whitebait that can be found in the flats. Inshore if you head out early or late chunk the bait on the mangrove and oyster bars to find Redfish (Drum, Red). Use cut bait, it’s too hot for anything else.

OFFSHORE – Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater) and Snapper (Snapper, Gray) can be found on the reefs including Blackthorn. Use a chum bag or Menhaden for the Snapper. Pinfish are better for the Ajs.

Hernando Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – Snook (Snook, Common) can still be caught and released on small Grunts. Redfish (Drum, Red) and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are also biting. Redfish are eating Pinfish, Mud Minnows and Shrimp up on the beaches with the Snook in the early morning. Trout are in about 5-7 ft of water in grassy or sandy flats. Free lined Shrimp with a split shot to hook them. Drum (Drum, Black) are up in the creeks and around the oyster bars with the Reds. They also in the intracoastal or around bridges, Stilt Houses and pilings with some Sheepshead. Mangrove Snapper and Flounder (Flounder, Southern) can have been caught around the same areas if you flip a Shrimp in the shadows. Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) are hit and miss. They are mixed with some Cobia.

OFFSHORE – Anglers are still going after Gags (Grouper, Gag) and Reds (Grouper, Red) this week. Gags are in roughly 20 ft while Reds are in 60 ft. Baby Octopus is the best bait for the Red Grouper. Squid, Pinfish, and Grunts will be best for Gags. They will eat pretty much anything. Red Snapper (Snapper, Red) is closed. Cobia have been caught this week as well. Reports of Kings (Mackerel, King) have slowed down.

BAIT REPORT – As the temperature increases the Whitebait are scarce. Pinfish are still abundant. Creek Chub (Bull Minnows) are along the sandy shorelines in the early mornings while the water is cool.

The beaches are full of Snook and they are still breeding. As long as you get out early morning or late evening the Reds are under the mangroves. They are hitting Scaled Sardines cut on the bottom. “The Tarpon bite is on in every pass and beach and there are lots of them. Bring a variety of bait including Pinfish, Crab and Mullet. Purple and Pink are great colors for the Fly-anglers. Best Artificials are Hoagies and Zmans. This is the main focus for anglers inshore. Snook (Snook, Common) are thick on the beaches as well. Grunts or Pinfish are the best baits to hook them. The early morning or late evening bite have been the key times to hook them. The middle of the day is way too hot for the fish.

The Gags (Grouper, Gag) and Snapper (Snapper, Red) have moved offshore along with the Mangroves (Snapper, Gray). They are in roughly 80-100 ft. Sardines, Threadfins and cut bait are working for Gags if you search the ledges or structures. Reds are liking smaller cut bait or whitebait. Chum heavy with glass minnows or chum to find them. Mangroves can be found a bit shallower on the reefs and structure. You can chum them off the bottom with a 1/O circle hook and no weight.

INSHORE – The Snook (Snook, Common) bite is on fire the last couple weeks. They are on the beaches and ALL the islands. The edge of the beach in a foot of water they will be schooled in about 15-20. Cast as far as you can and reel in so you don’t spook them. They are feeding on Whitebait and Pigfish. On the sandbars outside the island the Tarpon are cruising through. Again, as quiet as possible and least movement possible as to not scare them. They are feeding on different bait everyday. Somedays Pinfish, other Crab or Mullet, so bring lots. INSHORE – The Snook (Snook, Common) have moved out to the beaches in full force near any of the beach barrier islands. Key baits for fishing are scaled Sardines, Pigfish or Pinfish. For the artificial anglers out there, it is recommended that you use a DOA bait buster and Mirrolure in Purple Demon color. The MirrOlure or any other large swimbait is also recommended if you are going to be fishing late at night. In addition to the Snook, there are plenty of Tarpon on the beaches as well. Live Mullet and cut Threadfin are the baits of choice to catch the Tarpon. In terms of artificial baiting, throwing a big Hogy lure worked well to catch these fish.

OFFSHORE – The Grouper (Grouper, Gag & Grouper, Red) and Red Snapper (Snapper, Red) bite has been hot. Anglers have been catching groupers in water from 40 ft. to 80 ft. of water to make sure that they’re able to get their limit of snapper and grouper. For the Snappers, any type of cut bait or smaller bait are getting the most bites. The bait of choice for the Groupers are Pinfish.

Hernando Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – Reds (Drum, Red), Snook (Snook, Common) and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are all hitting inshore this week. Snook are on the beaches and the islands. Reds are on the islands and mangroves. Reds and Snook are also in the back and can be caught on whitebait. Trout are swimming in about 6 ft of water. Trout and Reds are also loving to take Shrimp. Permit are being caught by the Anclote power plant. Flounder (Flounder, Southern) are in the Anclote river as well. They are taking Pinfish for the most part. There have not been many reports of Tarpon. They are by the bridges and still down South a bit. Tarpon Fishing Outfitters is offering a Military and First Responders discount this weekend. INSHORE – Cobia are beginning to catch this week along with some Kings (Mackerel, King). Hogfish, Mangrove Snapper (Snapper, Gray) and Grunts (Grunt, White) are also hitting. They are being caught from 25 ft and beyond. They are all on full day charter trips.

INSHORE – Lots of Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are everywhere this week. Anglers can easily stock up on some good numbers. The water is loaded with them. Generally a live or artificial Shrimp will work well to hook them. Snook (Snook, Common) are starting to show up on the beach as well. There have been no reports of Redfish (Drum, Red) in the area, we expect they may have moved out.

INSHORE – It has been hit or miss in the area. The flats are full of Trout (Seatrout, Spotted). Soft plastics such as gulp Shrimp are doing well. Just make sure to match the water clarity. There are tons of them. Reds (Drum, Red) are also consistent so far. Mud Minnows on a freeline has been the best bet to hook them. We expect this bite to continue into the weekend.

INSHORE – Local Guides are heading to Boca Grande Pass to get ready for Tarpon. Redfish (Drum, Red) have been hitting Pinfish locally. Trout are slowing down since the water temperature is warming up. Snook (Snook, Common) are heading out to the beaches to get ready to spawn. INSHORE – The fishing has been alright this week. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are on the flats and the Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) are on the deeper flats. Hernando Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Redfish (Drum, Red) and Snook (Snook, Common) are starting to move to their Spring patterns. Snook are leaving the Anclote river and are around the Mouth. Redfish are mixed in. The best bait is Whitebait or Scaled Sardines.

OFFSHORE – The Kings (Mackerel, King) have moved in this week. 2-3 Miles on hard bottom will produce Bluerunners that you can take to 30 ft. Slow troll and flat line baits out to hook them. There are some Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater) mixed in at 30-60 ft.

BAIT REPORT – Scaled Sardines are around Howard Park or around the Caution Shoals sign in Anclote Park and you can chum to stock up. Tarpon Fishing Outfitters has new inventory as well as some great Kingfish gear. Stop in and stock up!

Hernando Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – The focus has mostly been inshore this week. There are plenty of Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) being caught as the water is perfect for them. The Redfish (Drum, Red) are starting to heat up along the shore from Hudson to Dunedin. They are out from the creeks and rivers. Snook (Snook, Common) are showing up and moved out of the holes and creeks. Whiting (Kingfish, Southern) and Silver Trout (Seatrout, Silver) are being caught on sandy bottom a bit deeper. There are plenty of Cobia showing up inshore and offshore. Anglers are doing really well with them. Chumming to bring the Pinfish in will attract the Cobia. Pinfish will also work as bait.

OFFSHORE – Cobia are doing well offshore on Pinfish. Grunts (Grunt, White) and Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) have also shown up and the sizes are reported to be large. There have not been many Grouper (Grouper, Gag) caught as of late. Kings (Mackerel, King) are small and mixed in with some Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) but we don’t expect big sizes or numbers for another month or so.

INSHORE – Anglers have been searching for Redfish (Drum, Red) around the mouth of the Antclode River and the Cotee River. Lots of people are doing well with Snook (Snook, Common) in Tampa as well around the islands. This is where a lot of anglers are heading. There are also a few Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) in the nearshore of this area.

OFFSHORE – There have been a few Kingfish (Mackerel, King) that have shown up however the weather conditions have been too rough to get out. Anglers who make it on the water have headed to roughly 30 ft to find them. We expect the bite to pick up once the temperature increases.

Hernando Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – The wind has been blowing in this area as of late. Lots of anglers have had a hard time getting out. When it settles down we expect to see Snook (Snook, Common) and Redfish (Drum, Red) following the bait on the flats. They should be all over the place.

OFFSHORE – Catch and release Gags (Grouper, Gags) have been out in the offshore this week. There have also been Snapper (Snapper, Red) in close at 45 ft that are also not open for harvest. Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater) are out farther this week in roughly 75 ft of water around structure.

Hernando Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – There have been plenty of Redfish (Drum, Red) around. Most are shorts but the bite is consistent. Anglers are beginning to fish for Snook, Common but the bite is not hot yet. The shallow water is producing Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) as it is still pretty cold in the deeper water. They are eating topwater baits such as Mirrolures. Low light conditions are when the fish bite. The high tide is the best time to hook them so far. The power plant was holding some great Pompano, Florida. There are a few reports of Mackerel, Spanish in the shallow grass and the nearshore reefs. It has been windy so most anglers are staying throughout the inshore this week. Pinfish has been a great live bait to throw this week. There are still plenty of nice sized Sheepshead in the creeks and canals as well.

OFFSHORE – When it is cooler anglers will troll in 10-12 ft of water for catch and release Grouper, Gag or Grouper, Red. Some anglers like to keep on top of them until the season opens.

Hernando Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – The warmer water temperatures are producing Snook (Snook, Common), Redfish (Drum, Red) and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) around the mouths of the rivers and back in the canals. Once the bait moves in we expect to see some Tarpon move in.

OFFSHORE – The Grouper, Gag are biting everywhere however they are closed so they must be released. They are on all the wrecks. Grunts are also on on the wrecks, hard bottoms and ledges. Hogfish have also been swimming. Drop Shrimp on a drop off to find them. Bring lots of Shrimp. Snapper, Gray have been from 60-80 ft and the bite is consistent. Chum the rocks and ledges using glass minnows to hook them. Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater) have been thick this week about 25 miles out. They are on any hard structures this week.

INSHORE – It has been quite windy in this area however anglers are still catching Trout on the flats. The canals are producing Reds (Drum, Red) and Snook, Common, as they school up in the area due to the cold weather. Mirrodines and Shrimp have been the best bet to hook them. The Mirrodine in 17 MR 21 as well as black/chartreuse have been producing well. Any light colors are a good bet. Since the water has been clear the light colored soft plastics such as a gulp or DOA will produce well.

INSHORE – The beach is full of Cobia, Stringray (Stingray, Southern) and Sharks (Shark, Bonnethead) this week. Shrimp and Pinfish have been the best for hooking the Cobia. Sharks and Stingrays are taking Shrimp. The island is holding a lot of Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Snook (Snook, Common). Whitebait is the best bet however a DOA is working well too. Reds (Drum, Red) are gathered up in the rivers this week as well as the Anclote area. In addition there are lots of Black Drum (Drum, Black) and Trout in this area. Snook are starting to come out of the rivers by the Anclote pier. Sheepshead are active around the bridges and pilings. Mackerel (Mackerel, Spanish) and Kings (Mackerel, Kings) have slowed down. There has been plenty of action for anglers to take advantage of this week.

INSHORE – The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) has been great around the islands and in the sounds on Shrimp and similar soft plastics this week. Clouser minnows in chartreuse and white are working well too. The fly has been fairly productive this week.

OFFSHORE – The Sheepshead have been holding up on the wrecks beginning their spawn. They will hit Shrimp, Fiddler Crabs or small crustaceans. They are big sizes so far this week. On the same wrecks are Hogfish, Grouper (Grouper, Gag) which are out of season and anglers are hooking them with Sardines. This is at roughly 25 ft of water and out.

Hernando Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) bite in St. Joseph Sound has been great. This is South of the Anclote River and North of the Causeway. Shrimp will hook them and White bait will work well if you can find them in the grass flats. There are some Ladyfish, Bluefish and Pompano, FLorida mixed in. If you anchor on the island from 25-30 yards away you will catch the Trout on a split shot or jighead. You will find Sheepshead, Drum (Drum, Black) or Reds (Drum, Red) in the same area all on Shrimp. The power plant has been hit and miss this week. Pompano and Permit have been hanging around and will eat Doc’s Goofy Jig that will get down in the water column and allow you to snap up fast. The Sheepshead have been okay along with lots of little Reds around the docks and in the river.

OFFSHORE – Things have been slow because of the wind this week. We are looking at a warm front coming in mid week followed by a cooler front for the weekend. When weather allows there is a lot of Grouper, Red in 20 ft or less.

Hernando Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Reds (Drum, Red) and Snook, Common have moved deep into the rivers this week. Anglers heading up stream can look for the temperature change at about 5 miles to start finding fish. They are schooled up in deep holes, channels and mangroves. Shrimp has been a great bait to hook them on. The Anclote power plant is still holding some great sizes of Pompano, Florida. Jack, Crevalle are showing up in this area too. They are hitting Doc’s goofy jigs, pompano jigs or naked ball jigs. The sizes have been pretty good so far.

OFFSHORE – The Hogfish bite has been on fire as of this week. This has been the target for most anglers so far. They are finding them on deeper ledges and drop offs. Working a naked ball jig tipped with Shrimp on the bottom has been the best way to hook a good size. There are also some Snapper, Gray and Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater) in the area. Anglers have hooked a few Grouper, Gag however they are not legal to keep at this time so they are releasing them.

Hernando Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Red (Drum, Red) bite is becoming easier this week as they have made their way into the bayous and deep into the winter canals. Live Shrimp has been the best bait to catch them, hooked on a jig. There have been no signs of Snook, Common so far this week.

OFFSHORE – Although they are closed there are a lot of anglers targeting Grouper, Gag due to their immense size as of late. They are weighing in up to 17 lbs on catch and release. There is a spotty Grouper, Red bite however most anglers are not going after them. Sardines have been the best method of hooking either of them. There are also some great sizes of Sea Bass, Black and Grunts that can be found with Squid. The fishing is hot in the area and expected to continue. They are an easier catch as they are schooling up in the cooler water.

Hernando Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – The best bite this week has been down by the Anclote outflow where anglers are finding lots of Pompano, Florida at the bell and off the piers. They are catching them using jigs so far. On the same pier at night anglers are using DOA or large Shrimp and working them slowly. The flats are slow due to the colder temperature however anglers are heading up the river in boats to hunt for Snook (Snook, Common), Reds (Drum, Red), and a lot of Drum (Drum, Black) under the docks. Shrimp and similar artificials are working well for the Drum however the Reds and Snook are preferring artificials this week. Anglers must move everything very slow as the weather has the fish in a more relaxed pattern this week.

OFFSHORE – Conditions have been difficult for anglers to head to the offshore this week due to the weather conditions. The colder weather has brought a stronger Grouper (Grouper, Gag & Grouper, Red) bite however so anyone heading offshore has been targeting them.

INSHORE – The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Reds (Drum, Red) are biting extremely well so far this week. They are preferring Shrimp however they are not picky beyond this. Artificials such as a berkeley Shrimp are working well in bright colors. Live and frozen Shrimp are producing the best sized bites so far. Cut Pinfish is turning up a decent bite on Reds too as it matches the current bait run.

OFFSHORE – It’s been too windy for anglers to head offshore. Once the wind lies down the bite is expected to be great on Snapper (Snapper, Gray & Snapper, Red) that were coming up in great sizes before the front set in. There is a lot in season and a lot expected to be swimming and hungry by the weekend.

INSHORE – The hottest fish in the area this week is the White Trout (Seatrout, Sand). They are going crazy and are coming up in both great sizes and numbers. Reds (Drum, Red) are also doing well and are particularly loving pink shad this week. Topwater lures are the best option for both the White Trout and Specks (Seatrout, Spotted). Shrimp are working great as well and are usually a first preference. The wind has kept a lot of anglers off the water so far however we hope for this to calm down for the holiday and anglers can get out for some great Christmas fishing.

INSHORE – There is quite a bit of action from the inshore this week however everything is turning up pretty small yet. There are lots of short Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) hitting topwater lures. Gulp and Shrimp are working as well. Reds (Drum, Red) are turning up as well and there are a few good sizes of them. The best bite has been in the morning so far this week however anglers should watch out for the negative tide.

OFFSHORE – There are some reports of Snapper, Red and Snapper, Gray hitting in the offshore on the bottom this week. There is not a whole lot of action in this area as most fish are closed. Hernando Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – The fishing in the area has been really good so far this week. The water temperatures have cooled down enough to bring new fish in. The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) bite has continued to do well as their sizes have increased. Reds (Drum, Red) have also shown up in a lot of the same spots. Shrimp under a popping cork throughout the grass flats are the best bet to hook either a Trout or Red. Anglers are still hitting a good Snook, Common bite as they chase after bigger sized Shrimp or small Pinfish. Artificially the bombers in red/white are a great alternative for Snook. Pompano, Florida and Jacks (Jack, Crevalle) have made their way in towards the power plants along with some good sizes of Bluefish. Jigs such as the Pumpkin Crazy are the most productive setup for these fish this week. There have been no reports of Flounder so far.

OFFSHORE – Although Grouper, Gag is closed anglers are still allowed to catch and release them, so anyone heading offshore this week has been doing just that. Gags have even been found in 25 ft of water and can be caught on Threadfins and Sardines. Large Pinfish are also great. The Kings (Mackerel, King) and Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) have had no reports so far this week and are expected to have moved out with the cooler temperatures.

BAIT REPORT – With the cooler weather some anglers are beginning to switch to artificial baits and lures however there is still a spotty Threadfin bite around structures.

Hernando Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – Snook, Common are beginning to move into the channels this week. There are also Reds (Drum, Red) in the flats around Anclote. There have been reports of huge sizes of Trout (Seatrout, Spotted), some weighing in over slot. Lots of guys are using plastics or Live Shrimp. Bass assassins and gulps are working well too. There has not been a particular tide to fish however a moving tide in general has been most productive. There have also been reports of Mackerel, King, Bonito, Little Tunny and Bluefish in the nearshore areas as well.

OFFSHORE – The boats are just starting to get back out now that the recent spurt of bad weather has seemed to pass. The ocean has finally calmed down this week and boats and charters have headed out today. Since Grouper is now closed there is not a lot of action in the offshore. There have been no reports yet however anglers hitting the water this weekend can always check out our Tips feature which provides additional information and suggestions to help improve the catch.

BAIT REPORT – There are bait all over the place in the area this week. Needlefish, Whitebait, Pilchards, Pinfish and Anchovies are all running making it easy for live baiters to stock up.

Hernando Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) have been hitting this week and turning up in some fairly good sizes. There are tons of Reds (Drum, Red) swimming the shallow water. They are hitting just about anything they don’t have to chase as the water cools down and they are not too active. Dead Pinfish or Ladyfish chunks are working just as well as live Shrimp. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) have moved into the shallow water and Snook, Common are already in the creeks and holes going up river. A lot of Drum (Drum, Black) have been coming in as well.

OFFSHORE – There have been a few reports of Grouper, Gags being caught just outside the edge of the nearshore. They have made their way in due to the warm water as well as some remnants of Red Tide. There have not been any reports of Mackerel, King this week however the Mackerel, Spanish have been swimming the offshore and there may be some good bites over the holiday weekend.

BAIT REPORT – Bait is starting to disappear however there is still Pinfish swimming. Whitebait is becoming a challenge to find this week.

Hernando Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – Snook, Common, Reds (Drum, Red) and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are doing well on the mainland side. Anywhere that has a cut or creek from Tarpon Springs and north to Sand bay and Green Key will be holding various sized Reds. There is a ton of Tripletail and Cobia swimming where there is anything floating. Crab trap buoys and floating debris could be hiding either species underneath. They are late this year but they are there.

OFFSHORE – The bite in this area has not been on fire however there are still plenty of fish swimming in the offshore. Mackerel, King are doing a bit better but are mostly hitting a little farther South. There are plenty of Mackerel running as bait to use though. Most people are looking for hard bottom, bait or birds to find them. Anglers are trolling and once they hit a King they will anchor and chum for the schoolies. There has not been a lot of big sizes, the largest report we have this week is 30 lbs. Fishermen should not be discouraged by this as there are still plenty out there.

Hernando Beach

INSHORE – Fishing in this area has not changed much in the past week. Seatrout, Spotted are coming back in hitting the gulp. Reds (Drum, Red) are also making their way back in and chasing gulp under a popping cork in new penny, root beer or new penny with a chartreuse tail. The Snapper, Gray have thinned out quite a bit and there have been no reports of anglers reeling them in. Snook, Common and Tarpon are swimming the creeks in some really good sizes. The water temperature still has not dropped to where it should be at this time of year when everything gets pushed back into the creeks.

OFFSHORE – Cigar minnows are still swimming in the deep water and all the fish are chasing them. The Mackerel, King bite has slowed down significantly due to the water temperature. They are still roughly 5 miles off the coast over structures and under birds. The Grouper, Gag bite has remained constant and they are hanging out a little closer. Sardines or Squid on a jig are working well along with live or chunked Minnow and Pinfish. When the water cools down more, the bite is expected to increase.

BAIT REPORT – Greenbacks are swimming down by the bridges in the causeway. A little farther out here are some Threadfins as well.

INSHORE – Redfish (Drum, Red) are still hot and they are hitting Shrimp, Pinfish, Cut Pinfish and cut Ladyfish. With live bait it is hard to keep your line in the water once you get on a school. Conditions are expected to maintain unless the weather drastically changes. There have also been reports of Grouper, Gag in roughly 30-60 ft of water. They are hitting just about any live or dead bait, they’re hungry and not picky.

OFFSHORE – It has still been pretty breezy in the farther out locations this week. There have been no reports of offshore fishing lately. New Port Richey / Hudson & Hernando Beach Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – There have not been a lot of anglers willing to go offshore these days so there have not been many reports filed. A few anglers that have made their way out have caught some good Snapper (Snapper, Gray) along with Kingfish (Mackerel, King) and the occasional Grouper, Gag, in anywhere from 20-40 ft of water. If they are willing to take on the weather there are definitely fish out there.

INSHORE – There has been quite a bit of action inshore lately. Jack (Jack, Crevalle) are moving in towards the rivers and bait schools weighing in from 4-6 lbs. Topwater plugs are working well for these along with spoons. This may also hook some Mackerel (Mackerel, Spanish). Both of these fish are hanging out specifically around the pier and power plant so if you can get out this weekend that is a great spot to be. Snook (Snook, Common) have been reported around the beaches towards the inland waterways and into the mainland and the river. There are lots of Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) from 16-20 inches in the flats and grass flats. The Green Key has provided a lot of action for Reds (Drum, Red) and Trout as well. Anclote is host to a plentiful amount of Tripletail on the buoys that are feeding on crabs.

BAIT REPORT – Most of the bait has been hanging out farther away near the outer island near Anclote so you will need to make the venture to collect some Pilchard. New Port Richey / Hudson & Hernando Beach Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – As we are seeing in most places, the wind has prevented a lot of anglers from getting offshore and therefore we have not had any reports at this time. We are hoping the wind will die down soon. If you do decide to brave the conditions be sure to check out our Tips by tapping on the fish of your choice to see what might help you hook up.

INSHORE – The Redfish bite continues to be steady as we make our way into the cooler weather. Although many anglers are going with cut Pinfish, you may also consider a Live Shrimp as we have seen some good results with them. You can find Reds all along the Green Key, back and front of Anclote as well as the oyster bars or around the Anclote river. Trout are also getting bigger and better with the colder weather coming around. Shrimp is also a great option for Trout as well. If you can get there, there’s also some Kings in about 50 ft of water.

BAIT REPORT – Lots of Pinfish are being reported which is a great opportunity to catch and make some Cut Bait to use when the wind dies down. There are also a large amount of Shrimp still out there so take advantage of that.

New Port Richey / Hudson & Hernando Beach Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – The Gag Grouper are on the move. We were catching them in 35 feet of water, and also in 106 feet. They can be found all over. We’re also catching Red Grouper. They’re also spread out in various depths of water. The Mangrove Snapper bite was on in 35 feet and deeper. For Snapper, in approximately 100 feet of water, we were dropping live Shrimp down which worked extremely well.

INSHORE – The Redfish are still schooling up and the bite is still on. For bait, we’ve been using live Pinfish with their heads cut off so they’re freshly bleeding. You cut the head in front of the eyes so the guts don’t fall out and then put the hook in the bottom. When they’re freshly bleeding, their scent goes out. The Redfish hunt with their nose and will seek out the bleeding Pinfish.

New Port Richey / Hudson & Hernando Beach Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – There has been lots of rain, and that means that we just haven’t heard all that much. Ed did hear that those who are going offshore aren’t even bothering with their close to shore numbers, just shoot straight out to your far ones. You want to do that partly because of the rain, and partly because you want to go deep for the cooler water this time of year. There are plenty of Sharks around and if that is what you are trying to catch you should be able to get one on the line.

INSHORE – Doing good on Trout and the usual inshore culprits. Most of the best fishing is in the deeper water right now because there is a lot of fresh, dirty, water coming through with all of this rain. That also pushed things out further than usual. The spoil islands are good for the Reds. Also try fishing around the Barrier islands, 3 Rooker, Anclote, etc. They are doing really good on the Cobia inshore until it started to rain, so keep an eye out for them, because they could still be around. There are lots of Mangrove Snapper in the residential canals, creeks, and river mouths biting on Shrimp.

BAIT REPORT – There is plenty of baitfish around, and the Pinfish are all over the place. Still plenty of white bait around too.

Tampa and Homosassa Fishing Report

“Tampa…Well the rains have finally subsided here in Tampa, there was flooded streets, houses and vehicles over the past week. The water has receded and we are back to normal. The water around Tampa bay right now has a lot of fresh water in it..Look for the best action to be had with species that can handle low salinity. There is actually some good redfish action in areas like Rocky Point, as well as 4th street. They are eating cut bait, live pinfish as well as live green backs. With the south west wind the water will be high, so look for the mullet to hone in on where the reds will be. The Snook are eating as well. Look for them on a strong outgoing tide, and be patient, when the water is high you have to give them time to get out of the mangroves and drop in to the areas were you can get your baits. Usually the last two hours of the outgoing tide is good for me. Any point near structures,oyster bars, or mangroves are holding Snook. Live Green backs are the way to go. Don’t be afraid to chum them up with some lively Green backs to get them going. If your looking to eat some fish, Mangrove snapper have been on fire with a good push of keepers making there way through the bay. Any of the bays artificial reefs are holding some nice snapper. Drop a Green back or select shrimp down with a couple split shots, and a circle hook. You will probably run into a couple flounder as well.

Homosassa….With the rains we have had the trout bite has still been a little slow for me, I have been fishing the Chassahowitzka preserve all the the way up to Mason creek for redfish to make a full day of fishing. The bite has been strong using a combination of baits. Pinfish free lined with 1/0-2/0 circle hooked in the back near the tail, has been pretty unstoppable. Following that would be a pinfish with a Bomber Paradise Popping Cork, then lastly Cut pinfish or mullet. Look for them about 1/2 way through the incoming tide. Any point that has hard bottom with good flow, seems to be holding a few fish. The larger fish have started the push to the outer islands, I believe due to the rain. Scallops are still plentiful, by the end of the week the water should a lot more clear, making the scallops easier to find.

Tarpon Springs Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – The Grouper have been moving in a little closer. Clearwater reef has some great fishing right now, and might be worth the time if you plan on going offshore. Cobia have been caught recently because the water temperature has pushed more fish back inshore. You want to take Sardines, Squid, and some live Pinfish (if you can get them) as bait. Again, the temperature change means that there are quite a few Grouper closer in than usual, so check for rocks and hard bottom.

INSHORE – Nick at Barracuda Bob’s has reported that the good Redfish are back in. The Trout bite is still good too. The Snook are also all over the beach. There are lots and lots of Redfish out at Anclote. There was a guy who came into the store who caught 14 Redfish with 2 dozen large Shrimp. If that isn’t a sign that these guys have the best bait around, then I don’t know what is.

BAIT REPORT – Pinfish are everywhere. Nick was out with his Father and they saw tons of them. Lots of Grunts to be seen too. There are some Greenbacks in and around the second bridge on the causeway around 3 Rooker.

Be sure to check in with Barracuda Bob’s, there construction is fishing up and should be done soon. In a couple more weeks they will be in top notch shape.

OFFSHORE – The catch right now is for Mangrove Snapper and Grouper. You are going to need to go 60 feet deep and further out before you start catching much of anything. Look for the hard bottom, and either free line live bait at the bottom, drop cut bait, or take some Squid with you.

INSHORE – The weather has been bad earlier this week and that really slowed up fishing. They are still catching Trout and that on the flats but the water is pretty murky and churned up. Use a little scent to it, noise, or color to draw them out. Like an expert chef you want to work all of the senses and then give a perfect presentation. There are Snapper and Sheepshead in the river and canal. The Snook are up against the beaches on the islands. There are a few flounder around, and if you get real lucky you might get a Cobia on the flats. The inshore has a really low salinity right now because the fresh water has flushed everything out. Up close to the mangroves there are still Redfish and Snook, but right now they are flushed out to the border islands.

BAIT REPORT – There is no bait to be seen. Thank the rain for that – it has flushed them right out. But don’t curse the weather too much, it has also cooled things down so the minute it stops raining and the salinity starts to go back up the fish will be in close and they will be active.

Overall fishing right now can be summarized in 6 words: Low clarity. Low salinity. Bad fishing.

OFFSHORE – Michael over at Fisherman’s world has seen the Grouper biting offshore between the 60-100 feet mark, if not slightly deeper. There are lots of Reds, Gags, and Grunts, as always. You want to fish for these guys by dropping live pinfish, make sure they aren’t too small though, hand sized is best. Frozen Sardines and Squid work as well. Tarpon is good on the back side of the island right now.

INSHORE – It has been really hot out so the best time to be fishing inshore is early morning, late in the evening, or at night. There are Snook on Caladesi, but you can fish any of the islands and be successful right now. There are also plenty of Sharks in the area if you are just looking to bend your pole. Throw on some cut or live bait and you should have one in no time. There are Redfish in the Anclote River, Oyster beds, and around the Mangrove Trees. Live and cut pinfish are working too. Keep your eyes out for Cobia too because there are some around.

BAIT REPORT – Whitebait early in the morning. pigfish are good and bigger fish are taking them. Chum for white bait.

New Port Richey / Hernando Beach Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Grouper is closed right now so not many people are going offshore. The only thing that is really out there is Red Snapper but you’ll have to go way out to find them. You’ll be looking at about a few hour run out there. Unless you know some good coordinates to bottom fish around, you are probably better off staying inshore.

INSHORE – The Spanish Mackerel are great inshore. There are also some Trout but they are on the smaller side. The best fishing is during the high tide right along the shorelines around the islands on the beach side. At that time you’ll catch Redfish and Snook. In the Residential canals and creeks you’ll find some nice sized Mangrove Snapper. Use some live Shrimp for those. Some anglers are finding success chumming with whitebait or using live pinfish.

BAIT REPORT – There are Pinfish everywhere you look and lots of bait over the grass.

Hernando Beach Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – The Grouper is hot right now. You can keep the Red Grouper but not the Gags so remember to throw those ones back. At this time the Grouper will chase the live bait, so go for live Pinfish. There are also a lot of Cobia and Spanish Mackerel. If you want to fish for the Cobia you’ll want to bring lots of chum with you, however this will also draw the attention of pesky Sharks. You can also troll for Red Snapper if you go out to about 100-120 feet of water. Try dropping live Sardines and Threadfin Herring for the Red Snapper. You can never go wrong with live bait. A lot of people buy Shrimp and are fishing for the Hog Snapper. They choose Shrimp because the Hog Snapper won’t take Squid or Sardines.

INSHORE – At high tide right against the shoreline there is Redfish, and Snook. The Trout are a little deeper on the grass flats and around Anclote Island but you’ll have to hunt a little. This time of year Trout is plentiful but small. You’ll find good size ones out in the deeper cuts. In the residential canals you’ll find some good sized Mangrove Snapper.

BAIT REPORT – Whitebait like the hot months so they are around. You’ll want to chum pretty heavy to bring them up, but it’ll take a while. If you want to spend two hours catching bait when you could be going after real game that is your call, but Bob from One Stop Bait and Tackle would rather just buy his bait.
