Montauk Fishing Report

INSHORE – During the Winter season the migratory fish have left the area and the variety of fish available in State waters are slim. Some anglers may still fish for Pollock and Cod, Atlantic. There are not a whole lot of boats still in the water so be sure to check with your local tackle shops to see who is still running trips. For inshore anglers, fishing from docks and piers around NY can yield some great catches of Herring. As long as the bays do not completely freeze over, you should be able to catch them using little more than a rainbow colored Sabiki rig. As we find varying weather conditions from day to day we encourage all anglers to stay safe and warm when fishing. This is a great opportunity to check out some of the current Pro Angler App features along with new additions coming soon. We look forward to bringing you more great Pro Reports when the bite fires back up.

INSHORE – When anglers are able to hit the water we continue to see Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) mixed with Cod (Cod, Atlantic). The Cod are still a bit farther out than the Sea Bass. Both are providing a decent bite. Start in 180 feet of water. Clams continue to be your best bet to hook them. We hope to see this roll over into next week.

INSHORE – Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) have been great if anglers can get out. Head out to roughly 30-40 fathoms to find them. There are also some Cod (Cod, Atlantic) being caught. The bulk of the Sea Bass are in 30 fathoms, the bulk of the Cod are in 40 fathoms. Clam is always a good bait to use for both fish. MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM THE PRO ANGLER TEAM! INSHORE – There are still some small Stripers (Bass, Striped) on the beach. There are also some small fish being caught further out. Most of these are on the troll or on diamond jigs. The bigger fish have pretty much moved off for the season. Blackfish (Tautog) are on the wrecks a bit farther out. Green Crabs are best when they are available. Clams are a great alternative and may catch Cod (Cod, Atlantic) and Ling (Hake) incidentally. Stop in to Dick’s Bait and Tackle for all of your holiday shopping! INSHORE – Stripers (Bass, Striped) seem to be moving down the coast. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are doing well. They are open until the 31st of December. Search in 150 to 200 ft on the wrecks using Clams or Squid strips. Tautog are mixed in and have been found a bit deeper on the reefs. They will be closed sooner, on December 14. They are still biting well on Green Crabs. Some of the party boats are targeting Sea Bass and catching Cod (Cod, Atlantic) as an incidental catch. It’s still a bit early for Pollock. Montauk Fishing Report

INSHORE – The recent streak of cold weather and high winds throughout our area put a bit of a damper on the Striped Bass (Bass, Striped) fishing. Many boats were unable to get out. A general lack of people going out fishing all around. Before the unfavorable weather we were seeing nice shots of action from Shinnecock to Fire Island. Many of the fish were anywhere from 26-34 inch Bucktails, poppers and rubber shads were all working excellent. Swimming plugs such as mag darters, sp minnows and darters were all taking fish. The temperatures seem to be going up once again as we head toward December. This could spark another chance in some action. The bait is present for it. One recent report from thanksgiving morning were many small fish were all over the beach taking all offerings. Big Blues (Bluefish) were also mixed in with the Striper up until the cold weather. No recent reports on them since then. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – Blackfishing (Tautog) has been a good choice when the weather allows the boats to get out. The Blackfish have moved a bit deeper now but are still not too far off. Some anglers are reporting good fishing in 80-100 feet of water. Green Crabs have been doing well. This is also the time of the year where many start getting ready for Cod (Cod, Atlantic) fishing. Most boats are running out for Cod and Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black). This wreck fishing in December can be excellent. Pick yourself a mild day and try it out. BAIT REPORT – There are some big schools of herring moving down the beach from Montauk as of Friday.

Montauk Fishing Report

INSHORE – Striped Bass (Bass, Striped) and Bluefish are good on the surf. Bluefish have been up to 20 lbs on the beach. They pushed all the Bunker up in the bay. Some can be found in the inlet and the bay when you can get through the dead Bunker. Bass are particularly good in the bay. The morning is best on the West side of the inlet during the incoming tide. The fish that aren’t surrounded by Bunker are easier to catch than the ones that have unlimited supply in front of them. Blackfishing (Tautog) has been productive on the reef when anglers are able to get out. Anglers are fishing them to the East towards Montauk. Gardiner’s Island is pretty slow at this point. They are likely almost done for the season as the fish move out from the bay. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – Not many anglers are heading to the Canyon as of late. There were some Swordfish (Billfish – Swordfish) caught along with Yellowfin and Albacore (Tuna, Yellowfin & Tuna, Albacore) on the chunk. Bigeye can be found between the tails and the dip. This is mostly for commercial anglers. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

BAIT REPORT – Bunker (Menhaden) are easy to find in the bay and on the beach.

Montauk Fishing Report

INSHORE – Loads of Stripers are all over the bays and the back bays for anglers casting rubber Shad and Bucktails, Diamond Jigs or Popping Plugs. Plenty of fish are swimming the Smith Point Bridge. The inshore bays are loaded with Bunker and other bait. Stripers are there and feeding on them. Along the beach has had a similar bite. There is a lot of Bunker and bait moving down the surf and Bass are hitting the bait schools. When the subtle wind pushes the bait to the beach the fishing is great. A bit of surf movement will always bring them in. There is a bit of Tautog (Blackfish) being caught. A lot are shorts with a few keepers in the mix. Wreck fishing is picking up with decent sized Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) and a few keeper Tautog. The bite is hit or miss in terms of when to get out on the water. Changing tides are your best bet. Clams and Squid are more productive for the Sea Bass and Porgy (Scup). Green Crabs are great for the Tautog. Stripers are biting towards Gardiners islands taking three way rigs with bucktails or drifting live Eels in 40-50 ft of water. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – The Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) bite has been slow. Hudson Canyon and Veatch Canyon are your best places to search for them. Swordfishing (Billfish – Swordfish) has been pretty steady. They are in 300-600 ft of water. Whole Squid is best to catch them at night with a glow stick and a rattle. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

INSHORE – Blackfish are swimming the inlet and local beaches. Stripers (Bass, Striped) and Bluefish are swimming along the beaches and inlets as well. The beginning of the incoming tide is the best time to fish using Bunker and Clams. Albies (Bonito, Little Tunny) are still hanging around as well. They are mixed in with the Bluefish. Look under the birds to find them. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – Tuna (Tuna, Bigeye) up to 130lbs are biting well. A few Yellowfin (Tuna, Yellowfin) are mixed in. Bluefin (Tuna, Bluefin) are on their way. The Bluefin we’ve seen so far are small and can be caught on the troll on the way out or back. Most fish are 100 miles or more offshore. Overnight we are seeing small Swords (Billfish – Swordfish). There’s some decent fish to be caught at the Hudson Canyon. It’s doing much better than the Atlantic Canyon. Island Bait & Tackle 718-885-2153 https://proangler.us/capt/IslandBaitTackleBrooklyn.jpg

Montauk Fishing Report

INSHORE – We are seeing a typical Fall run of Stripers (Bass, Striped) and Bluefish. The bite is mostly Bass. Surf fishing and the beaches are productive. Quality fish have been caught in the inlet and back bays. They are better than out front. Anglers are drifting Eels and Spot or throwing plugs. Time of day doesn’t matter as long as you have a moving tide. The night bite has been fantastic. Blackfishing (Tautog) has been good to the East. Anglers are fishing the reef and the fish up to 12 lbs so far. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – Anglers are targeting Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin) into this week. The overnight and early morning bite seems to have been productive. There may be some Bigeye and Albacore mixed in (Tuna, Bigeye & Tuna, Albacore). The bite is good now that we finally have nicer weather. INSHORE – INSHORE – Stripers (Bass, Striped) are biting into this week. They are swimming up and down the beach as well as inside the inlet. Drifting Clams, live Eels, and trolling umbrella rigs has worked best. Popping plugs and bucktails are better along the beach. Both the day and night bite has been great however the night bite is a bit more productive. Blackfishing (Tautog) is good along the rocks, west jetty and the inlets. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) is doing well on the reef as well. Any structure will be holding them. The weather has been a bit too rough to head offshore. INSHORE – In the bay we are seeing Bluefish to 4 lbs with a few bigger fish up to 10 lbs mixed in. There is a mixed bag of small Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black), Porgy (Scup) and Blowfish (Puffer, Smooth). Small Stripers (Bass, Striped) are turning up around the Smith Point Bridge area and Buoy 14 and 15 in the bay. There are some nice sizes in the inlet on live Eels and live bait. Anglers are also drifting Clams. Blackfish (Tautog) is doing well along the West Jetty of the inlet as well as all jetties on the inlets on the South shore including reefs and structure. They are mixed with Sea Bass and Porgy. Surf casting is picking up on the sand beaches along the South shore for Stripers and Bluefish. Popping Plugs or Diamond Jigs with green/white tails are best. Fresh Clams are working as well. Things are heating up for the fall run as fish invade the beach and inlet. It’s a lot of surf casting, drifting Eels and drifting Clams in the inlet. Green Crabs are best for the Blackfin. It’s been rough for anglers getting offshore due to the wind and heavy seas from the storm. Montauk Fishing Report

INSHORE – The weather is just starting to turn back to more ideal conditions recently. The fishing has been thrown off a bit and a lot of anglers have opted to stay inside. There was some consistent Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] biting before the storm hit. We expect a great Striper (Bass, Striped) bite very soon as Montauk has been productive in deeper water and in the back. The South shore should heat up quickly. Clams have worked well as bait, especially throughout the inlet. The big fish should be here in the next few weeks. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) and Porgy (Scup) were on the inshore reefs. Most of the fish are shorts. Blowfish (Puffer, Smooth) and Snappers (Bluefish) can be found in the bay. Once things really settle down we will be able to see how the fish were affected by the storm. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – Prior to the storm Yellowfin and Bluefin (Tuna, Yellowfin & Tuna, Bluefin) were as close as 15 miles. Anglers were trolling or chunking Butterfish or Bunker to hook them. A few White Marlin (Billfish – Marlin, White) and Mahi (Dolphin) were also caught on the troll. You can also toss baits around debris for Mahi. Shark (Shark, Shortfin Mako) fishing is slow as most anglers are targeting the Tuna. The Canyons were a bit slow as the best bites are coming from inside 50 miles. Montauk Fishing Report

INSHORE – All good Fluking [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] is in full swing around the South shore. Lots of keepers and limits are turning up. Fish to 12 lbs have been caught on Killies, Spearing, Squid and Gulp on the back of White or Chartreuse Bucktails. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) and Porgy (Scup) are on the reef but most are short as they’ve been picked out. The deeper wrecks are holding bigger fish. You’ll have to move past 80 ft to 120 ft or better. Bassing (Bass, Striped) is hot at Montauk but it slows down the farther West you head. There are some Albacore (Bonito, Little Tunny) scooting around and they are really close to the beach and all the way out to 30 miles. They are feeding on small bait. The Fluke are hot in the Peconics and out towards Gardiners along with Striped Bass. The North shore is good for Porgy. Snappers (Small Bluefish) are doing fine as well. Spearing or Silversides will hook them. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – A lot of Mahi (Dolphin), Bluefin and Yellowfin (Tuna, Bluefin & Tuna, Yellowfin) are in close. The Tuna can be trolled 10-15 miles out. Montauk Fishing Report

INSHORE – They’re finally here! I’m talking about the Striped Bass (Bass, Striped), big ones that showed up at the end of the week, just in time for the Fourth of July celebration. All of the charter boats have been catching their limit, with many of the fish forty pounds or better. The bottom fishing has been hot as well, especially for the Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) & Porgies (Scup), and occasionally for the Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)], which has been up and down. Some boat catches a mess of fluke and the next day a couple of boats join him. The following day a bunch more join in and the next day that spot isn’t so good anymore. But the Porgies and Sea Bass help fill in the blank spaces. My go-to area for Sea Bass this time of year has always been Rocky Hill, but this year it’s not worth the run, with plenty of Sea Bass locally, and better sized ones. And finally, the State of New York gifted the harbor with some spanking new signs welcoming people to the state. There are six of them all facing motorists leaving the harbor area on West Lake & Flamingo. I guess they are aimed at all the people arriving in New York on the Viking Ferry.

OFFSHORE – Offshore is not very exciting, with most of the Blue Sharks (Shark, Blue) having moved out East, making it pretty boring waiting around for the bite from a Mako (Shark, Shortfin Mako). The nearshore shark grounds have green water and very little life except for some Bluefish that occasional show up to screw up the baits. Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin) are also among the missing and I haven’t heard of any action from the far offshore waters either. The Market that was Gaviola’s finally opened and it is pretty much what it was except spruced up a bit.

INSHORE – Fishing is good in the inlet and the bay this week. Anglers are catching Stripers (Bass, Striped) up to 30 lbs at night on live bait. They are hotter in the inlet. You can catch them in the bay by clam chumming during the day. The bay is also full of Bluefish as well. Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] has been slow in the bay but better in the ocean from 60-80 ft of water to the East.

OFFSHORE – The Shark (Shark, Mako & Shark, Thresher) fishing is picking up this week. The first Bigeye (Tuna, Bigeye) was also brought in from the Hudson. There were also some smaller Bluefins (Tuna, Bluefin) and a few Mahi (Dolphin) on the same trip. This is about 80 miles out. Anglers are getting ready for the big offshore push!

Montauk Fishing Report

INSHORE – It’s been starting to pick up lately. Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] is getting better and better. It was hit or miss but is beginning to become more consistent, especially on Shinnecock. Anglers running to deeper water haven’t had much luck. There has been some Striper (Bass, Striped) action but the Bluefish have made it difficult to get through. At night, in the inlet anglers are Clam chumming. This may even work mid day. If you are casting from the beach it seems impossible to get through the Bluefish. They are everywhere. The Bass on the surf are swimming a bit farther out so the boat anglers are doing better.

BAIT REPORT – Loads of Bunker (Menhaden) have turned up this week.

INSHORE – Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] is better in the bay but they are hitting out of the inlet as well. The ocean might be a great bet for the weekend. There is plenty of Bluefish in the bay. Stripers (Bass, Striped) are swimming the inlet and are taking clams drifted with Clam Chum. They are also hot by Gardiners. They are taking bucktails with a heavy sinker and long leader. Anglers are drifting and doing very well.

OFFSHORE – Shark (Shark, Shortfin Mako) is picking up offshore this week. We are seeing some good sizes coming in. Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) are way out at the Canyon and have not moved in.

BAIT REPORT – Blue Crabs seem to be making a comeback this year. Bunker (Menhaden) and Spearing are swimming the inside.

Montauk Fishing Report

INSHORE – There are quite a bit of fish around. If you are heading out you’ll have your choice of just about anything. Plenty of Bass (Bass, Striped) and Bluefish can be found. There are not many Bass on the beach however the backwaters and inlets are holding great numbers. Bluefish are thick in the inlet and behind the inlet in Shinnecock. Bunker are swimming this area as well as the Peconics. Fluking [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] has been picking up. Porgy (Scup) has been decent out by Gardiners. We expect these conditions to continue into the weekend.

OFFSHORE – Going offshore has not been super productive. Threshers (Shark, Thresher) are coming off of Shinnecock. Some anglers are heading to South Jersey. We have not seen any Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) at the Canyon just yet however there seems to be quite a bit of bait holding up so we expect to see some fish move in soon.

BAIT REPORT – Bunker (Menhaden) are swimming the inlets and back in the Peconics this week. There are some Sandeels and Spearing around but they are slim compared to the Bunker.

INSHORE – The beach hasn’t been producing as well as the inside. Anglers fishing inside are finding lots of Bluefish and Stripers (Bass, Striped). The fish are on the big pods of Bunker so anything that is either a Bunker or looks like one is going to be a good thing to throw at them.

OFFSHORE – We are starting to get a little bit of Bluefin (Tuna, Bluefin) out at the canyons. There hasn’t really been a good chunk bite so make sure you stick to trolling baits and trolling lures. There are also some sharks out there but the focus has been on the Tunas.

BAIT REPORT – Inside we’re seeing quite a few pods of Bunker (Menhaden) for those hunting for bait.

Montauk Fishing Report

INSHORE – Weather has made inshore inlets and piers fairly inconsistent. Lingcod and Cod (Cod, Atlantic) can be caught while drifting inshore with clams. The Herring reports have been pretty much nonexistent.. Some areas along Long Island have seen Pollock (Pollock, Atlantic) on red, white, or pink artificials. Diamond jigs are also popular. The Pollock fishing is fairly sporadic so there isn’t really a best spot to fish. At least a bad day of fishin’ beats a good day of workin’. Be sure to check out our Fish Guide for tips on Pollock, Cod, and Lingcod for some additional angling tips!

OFFSHORE – The weather and time of year has made reports limited for this area. Most offshore anglers are heading to water up to 180ft deep while looking for Cod (Cod, Atlantic). There’s going to be some Pollock, Lingcod, and Skates (Skate, Winter) in the same areas. Lately the waters to the west of Long Island haven’t fished as well as waters to the east. Dogfish (Dogfish, Spiny) are usually caught out there too. Check out our GPS hotspots for some nonpublic numbers to try on your next outing. Spring is just around the corner and we’re looking forward to getting back on the water with you when the fishing, and hopefully the weather, heats up!

Montauk Fishing Report

INSHORE – The weather has not been ideal this week and has shut down most fishing in the area. Anglers have not been able to make it either inshore or offshore this week. The wind has been strong from every direction and most people are planning on waiting until after the holiday to hit the water. We hope to see some Bass, Striped and Tautog continue to bite at that time. There have been a few spotty reports of Cod, Tommy coming in as well. Be sure to check your regs in regards to what’s open for harvest or just catch and release. As the Winter season has set in there is not much action to be found in this area. Montauk Fishing Report

INSHORE – There is not a lot of action from the inshore or nearshore this week as Bass, Striped and Tautog is closed. They did have a solid bite prior to the season ending however you will have to check your local regulations as to whether you can catch and release.

OFFSHORE – There is still a great bite in the offshore this week. Tuna, Bluefin and Tuna, Bigeye are doing well in the canyon although it is the tail end of the season. This is expected to cool off as the temperature drops however the unusually warm weather has continued the bite so far. Anglers have been using chunks of Butterfish. Sea Bass, Black has also produced a good bite on clams hooked on high-low rigs. This is leading up to a steady bite expected in the new year for offshore fishermen.

BAIT REPORT – There are no bait to report so far this week. Lots of great fishing gear available at White Water Outfitters to meet all your fishing needs any time of year.

Montauk Fishing Report

INSHORE – There is a little less action inshore this week. Anglers have to work harder to find the fish. Striper (Bass, Striped) season closes in the next week however there is still a decent bite should you hit a good school. Look for roughly 50 ft of water and there may be fish hiding under schools of Herring. It is a good idea to throw some Herring or similar artificial to match the bait. They are in good numbers and decent sizes when you can find them. Most of the big fish have made their way through for the season and the migration is pretty much wrapped up. If there is no bait running in close the Stripers will be farther out in 80 or more feet of water.

OFFSHORE – Although the temperature has dropped there is still some solid action from the offshore so far this week. There have been reports of Tuna, Bigeye swimming out in the canyon and since the wind has laid down a few times , anglers have been able to reel in good sizes and numbers. It was like fishing in a pond, not many boaters and easily caught fish. Most anglers were chunking with any fish they can get their hands on. Butterfish, Herring and Whiting are the best choices. There is still some bottom fishing out there for Sea Bass, Black which are coming up in big sizes along with some Blackfish (Tautog) as well. When the weather is good they are in the deeper water while the Blackfish are specifically holding up on the reef. This bite is expected to stay good until the end of the season, until the first really hard cold snap.

BAIT REPORT – There is not a lot of bait running although you may find some spotty schools of Herring in the inshore water.

Montauk Fishing Report

INSHORE – Most of the good Striper (Bass, Striped) bite is to the west of here. The nearshore wrecks are holding some Sea Bass, Black and Porgy however they are fairly deep at 130-180 ft. Anglers have been bottom fishing diamond jigs with a teaser above. Clams along the bottom on a high-low rig are working well too. The season is beginning to slow down and come to a close as anglers are wrapping up their last few weekends on the water.

OFFSHORE – Anglers have been hitting the last of the Tuna (Tuna, Bigeye & Tuna, Longfin & Tuna, Yellowfin) run this week. They are heading out to the canyons for what is probably the final chance they will get before conditions become too rough, however that is all dependant on the weather and some anglers are hoping for one more good weekend. Daytime chunking has been reported to be the best method to hook them this week and is very productive.

BAIT REPORT – There are still some Peanut Bunker (Menhaden) swimming in the open water this week. In the bay live baiters can also find some Shiners (Minnows) as well. Plenty of options for bait this week.

Montauk Fishing Report

INSHORE – There is a bit more action on the inshore however the wind is still fairly nasty here as well. The ocean has been choppy so even a lot of inshore boaters have not made it out. Sea Bass, Black continue to bite around the inshore wrecks. There are a ton of Blackfish (Tautog) swimming with them and biting Green Crabs. Stripers (Bass, Striped) are still swimming along the beaches and at about 20-30 ft of water from boats. Anglers are using the birds to find them and jigging underneath. Bunker and Clams have been their preference this week. They’ve become slightly more spotty however they are still moving. Stripers are also being caught around the point a bit farther out near the bay

OFFSHORE – The weather has been rough in this area lately and this week there have been no reports of anglers heading to the offshore. The weather has become even less favorable and most fishermen are choosing to stay on the inside. If conditions lie down in time for the holidays anglers can always check out our Tips feature which provides additional information and suggestions to help improve the catch. Dick’s Bait & Tackle can also provide an up to the minute fishing report so everyone knows exactly what to expect on the water.

BAIT REPORT – The Mullet run has continued this week although is becoming more spotty.

Montauk Fishing Report

INSHORE – There is a lot of action happening inshore this week. Sea Bass, Black have been huddled up around the nearshore wrecks. Blackfish (Tautog) and Cod, Tommy are also hanging out on the wrecks farther out at 150-180 ft of water. Closer in, anglers can expect to see some Porgies (Porgy, Jolthead) as well. The inshore reefs are hosting more Blackfish that are chasing Green Crabs. There are plenty of schools of Stripers (Bass, Striped) in 20-30 ft of water and along the beaches. Shore fishermen are using Bunker and Clams as the bait of choice. Stripers have also been throughout the inlets taking live Eels. Anglers are also trolling with umbrella rigs and shad rigs or casting lures with bucktails and swimmers or plugs to catch them. As a live bait they are absolutely loving clams.

OFFSHORE – The weather has been rough in this area lately however this has not stopped some determined boaters from heading out. There have been reports of Tuna, Yellowfin at the canyon. They are out there and anglers are chunking for them using Butterfish or Sardines. The early morning and late day bite still remains the best.

BAIT REPORT – The Mullet run has continued this week as small bait are moving out and around the beach. The Sand Eels have pretty much disappeared however there are still some Menhaden and Clams to be caught.

Montauk Fishing Report

INSHORE – The surf has been pretty good over the weekend turning up mixed sizes of Stripers (Bass, Striped) in this area. The catch is very dependent on the weather and water conditions lately as the schools have been pretty mixed up. Anglers continue to use Eels in the evening and Menhaden, Spot, and Butterfish during the day. Reports have also come in of some good sized Tautog that have been chasing Green Crabs on inshore and nearshore structures.

OFFSHORE – The canyons are producing lots of Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna, Albacore). There have also been reports of some Tuna, Bigeye out there as well. Anglers have been chunking using Butterfish or Sardines to hook all three species. The early morning or late evening seems to remain the best time to be out as the action continues to be fairly scattered throughout the day.

BAIT REPORT – There’s not a whole lot bait running to report at this time. For alternative suggestions anglers can always check out the Pro Angler Tip feature that provides additional information to help improve the catch. Don’t forget to get your equipment into White Water Outfitters early to make sure it is in great condition for next season.

Montauk Fishing Report

INSHORE – The local Bass, Striped and Bluefish bite has been steady however on the North side with a short boat run is the best place to catch. Anglers have been using a variety of different methods to hook both these species. Live baits include Eels at night and Menhaden, Spotfish and Butterfish during the day. From the beach some fishermen are using bucktails and Pinfish or small to medium sized plugs. The Bass and Blues are pretty much hitting anything you put in front of them.

OFFSHORE – Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin & Tuna, Albacore) could not get any better, especially with the nice weather. They have had a great bite lately for anglers that are mostly chunking using Butterfish or Sardines. The best times to head out on the water are either morning or evening since there has not been much action throughout the day.

BAIT REPORT – A lot of anglers have not been heading out for live bait lately however there are still some swimming. Butterfish and Menhaden are becoming spotty although if you are using a cast net off a dock, under lights, you can get lucky. Don’t forget to get your equipment into White Water Outfitters early to make sure it is in great condition for next season.

Montauk Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – The Hudson Canyon is producing a large amount of Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin & Tuna, Bluefin) as well as a good Sailfish bite. Pulling Ballyhoo has been the best for all three. Once you’re on the fish, skirted versus naked has not made a difference. The night time chunk bite is also pretty good right now. Tilefish (Tilefish, Great Northern) are starting in 300-600 ft. of water and loving the cut bait. You will need to be using a couple pounds of weight to make sure the bait is getting all the way down and most anglers prefer the electric reels as it is a long way back up. Mako (Shark, Shortfin Mako) and Threshers (Shark, Thresher) have continued to bite but are moving in closer. You’ll find them chumming in about 100-170 ft of water. If you are dropping Crab you should expect to find some good Tautog in the Moriches reef and Shinnecock reef. This is expected to continue through the season to the close in mid-December.

INSHORE – Around the beaches and inlets anglers can find Bass (Bass, Striped) which you can hook right from shore. Plugs, plastics with swim tails and topwaters are ideal in reds, whites, and greens. Inshore they are mostly schoolie sized however bigger Bass can be caught on live eels by the boats drifting the inlets.

BAIT REPORT – There isn’t much bait running at this time however for more information on what to use you can always consult our Tips feature providing suggestions to help improve your catch.

Montauk Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – When the weather has allowed anglers to get on the water the fishing has been good for daytime chunking. Yellowfin have been around 50-60 in the Hudson Canyon around 70-75 miles out. The numbers of good days to get out are getting fewer.

INSHORE – When the weather permits, boats have been running down the beaches for 20-30 inch Bluefish, Bunker and Bass. Green Crabs have been working well while bottom fishing for Tautog. November will close surf season leaving only bottom fishing for the anglers who can brave the cold!

BAIT REPORT – Around the beaches schools of Bunker have been plentiful for anglers to scoop up some bait.

Montauk Fishing Report

INSHORE – It’s a little quiet right now, but there is a good amount of false Albacore around right now for the Anglers using fly fishing gear and light tackle. There are plenty of small Striped Bass around, but nothing too big near Hamptons. Montauk has more of the big Bass right now. For the Albacore, most of the guys are throwing the normals tins, the deadly dicks, crippled herring, and custom Albie jigs. The fly guys are throwing epoxy minnow type patterns, something a little harder. Most of the Anglers that are catching any amount of False Albacore are throwing any kind of rubber bait and a jig head. This time of year some Anglers are using live bait on the inlet and but most are using bucktails once the main bait starts to make its way out of the bay. The best time of day to fish here is incoming, flood tide.

BAIT REPORT – There are plenty of Bunker and Mackerel around right now.

Montauk Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Right now the Ocean fishing is hot. There are quite a few Yellowfin Tuna and Mahi out at the Canyons. The Tuna are very aggressive right now and are being taken by way of Spreader Bars, Daisy Chains. The 6 in tube squid/shell squids are where it’s at. The colours don’t seem to matter that much, try yellow, orange, or green.

INSHORE – Shark Fishing is good off the beach. Further out, in about 70 to 100 ft of water, there’s quite a few Mako Sharks and they’re on the bunker schools. Once you find the school, you find the Sharks. Hook a live Bunker for bait. In the bay it’s mainly Snapper Bluefish, with a couple of Fluke, and Sea Bass mixed in and they have no problem taking spearing. On the surf side a lot of sharks are being taken, lots of sandbar sharks. Bunker or Mackerel are working well there. Striped Bass are going to pick up on the beach soon, soft plastics, jigging from the boats, and trolling umbrella rigs will all be working when they turn up.

BAIT REPORT – Spearing, Peanut Bunker, and Mackerel are in good supply in local waters for bait.

Montauk Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – There are plenty of Sharks. The Tuna has kind of slowed down. There hasn’t been much of a temperature break, which draws the Tuna in. If you can find some floating debris or Lobster traps there is a greater chance of catching a Tuna. Shark are biting Mackerel and Bluefish chunks while chumming with Bunker or Mackerel. 15 miles out of Shinnecock Canal there’s some Mahi and Tuna. When fishing for the Mahi troll with little plugs, or small, little bait fish like Peanut Bunker. 2 miles off shore Mackerel are showing up and the numbers are great! INSHORE – Up in the Bay near Robinson’s Island they are catching Porgy. The Porgies are biting at Clams on the bottom. There are also Small Kingfish, a couple of Blowfish and, Snapper near the shore. Snapper Blues are still fairly thick near the beach.

BAIT REPORT – Local bait in the bay include Clams, Peanut Bunker, Spearing , and Green (Spanish) Mackerel. There’s haven’t been any reports of butterfish yet.

Montauk Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – The big word is Big Eye Tuna out at the Hudson Canyons. The Yellowfin have been a little closer to shore than the Canyons, but it’s been a little spotty. Color of trolling lures and skirting hasn’t been playing a major factor in success, but you can still use your purples, blues, etc.. Ballyhoo is still working for Tuna bait.

INSHORE – There’s lots of small Bluefish around the inlets. Smaller Bass and Fluke are passing through the surf. The Bass are mostly being caught at night using small plugs and bucktails. The Fluke will take Spearing. The Snapper Blues have been great from the piers.

BAIT REPORT – Lots of Rain Bait and Anchovies around being chased by fish. Peanut Bunker is around in good numbers off the beach.

Montauk Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – The boats out at the Canyon, which is about a 78 mile run, found a slightly spotty Yellowfin Tuna bite and an equally sporadic but rewarding Big Eye Tuna bite. If you don’t like running as far, you can find smaller Yellowfin Tuna trolling in the 30-50 mile range. Both areas have been finding size of lure mattering more than color. Plastic bulb squids on daisy chains or spreader bars about 6-8 inches in size have been doing better than trolled Ballyhoo. In closer to shore, 60 to 100 feet of water, there are some Boston Mackerel that will hit on a mackerel tree with a diamond jig or a weight on the bottom loop. It has been a record year for Sharks around the 80 foot depth mark. Thresher Sharks, Mako Sharks, Brown Sharks, and some Tiger Sharks are being caught.

INSHORE – If you can find the schools of Spearing right now, there should be a good amount of Fluke underneath them. For those who aren’t able to get out in the boats, you can fish a float/bobber with the bait set 18 inches beneath. Spearing will be the best bait to use on a snapper hook. The float will help keep the bait off the bottom and away from the crabs. The beaches can also be a great spot to catch some Sharks in the surf as there has been a good amount of them around.

BAIT REPORT – There is lots of Spearing in the bays and inlets, it would be worth your time to be tossing a net on them or try using a Sabiki Rig.
