Charlestown Fishing Report

INSHORE – During the Winter season the migratory fish have left the area and the variety of fish available in State waters are slim. Some anglers are still heading out on the few party boats still running. Cod, Atlantic is the main species to keep while winter fishing but they are found mostly in Rhode Island saltwater. Inshore anglers can fish for holdover Striper (Bass, Striped) in many of the tidal rivers. We are looking forward to hearing about the Spring run. As we find varying weather conditions from day to day we encourage all anglers to stay safe and warm when fishing. This is a great opportunity to check out some of the current Pro Angler App features along with new additions coming soon. We look forward to bringing you more great Pro Reports when the bite fires back up.

Charlestown Fishing Report

INSHORE – During the Winter season the migratory fish have left the area and the variety of fish available in State waters are slim. Anglers who are determined to head out can fish Providence River up by the Power Plant. This area is typically holding resident Stripers (Bass, Striped) that can be fished all Winter long. Some anglers are heading north to fish freshwater or ice fish when the water is solid. White Perch (Perch, Silver) can also be found in the shallow water. Towards Block Island you may find some Stripers. Tautog are only available for catch and release fishing at this time. Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] are in deeper water. There’s not much to do offshore through the winter aside from the Cod (Cod, Atlantic) bite that happens when the bigger charter boats can get towards Block Island. As we find varying weather conditions from day to day we encourage all anglers to stay safe and warm when fishing. This is a great opportunity to check out some of the current Pro Angler App features along with new additions coming soon! Charlestown Fishing Report

INSHORE – When weather allows anglers to get out we expect to see some Cod (Cod, Atlantic) caught around 99-140 ft. The West as well as South of Block Island and the East side of Block Island will do well. Party Boats Seven B and the Frances Fleet will fish for them. Clams will work well to catch them along with Jigs and Berkley Gulp 6 inch swimming mullet as a teaser on an octopus hook. Gulp and White are always good colors to choose. Recently the morning bite has been most productive. We hope to see this continue into next week.

BAIT REPORT – Squid have slowed down, likely due to the wind. If we see some more ideal conditions they may continue to turn up.

INSHORE – Schoolie Bass (Bass, Striped) are swimming the Providence and Seekonk Rivers. Anglers are catching some keepers. In the Connecticut Rivers, there are keeper Bass and plenty of schoolies. Housatonic and the Thames are great places to fish. There are still some Cod (Cod, Atlantic) and Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) around. Anglers are heading out in the mornings to fish for them. Clams will work well to catch them along with Jigs and Berkley Gulp 6 inch swimming mullet as a teaser on an octopus hook. Sea Bass are taking Gulp as well. You can hook them any way for a good bite. Glow and White are most productive colors. MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM THE PRO ANGLER TEAM! PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal more tips and tricks on how to catch!

Charlestown Fishing Report

INSHORE – We still have some inshore schoolie Bass (Bass, Striped). For bigger fish, head to the CT shoreline. Fish the mouths of the rivers and up the Thames and Housatonic rivers for some decent Bass. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal more tips and tricks on how to catch!

OFFSHORE – Tautog are out deep in 100 ft. There are some inshore but they are mostly small. We are seeing great numbers Cod (Cod, Atlantic) along with a decent Black Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) bite. The Cod are up to 15 lbs. The Black Sea Bass are up to 4 lbs. Pollock and Weakfish are mixed in. Anglers are jigging around what they call the East Grounds. This is in Block Island Sound, about 7 miles West. Fish tight to the bottom for Sea Bass. Diamond Jigs with a Berkley Gulp Teaser is working well. The Berkley Mullet is destroying the fish regardless of what shape it’s in. The day bite is most productive. There are plenty more Sea Bass around the island. Find the structure to find the fish. Working some tapered metal swedish style jigs through the whole water column has been productive as well.

BAIT REPORT – Squidding has been great, especially out of Newport and Jamestown.

OFFSHORE – The Cod (Cod, Atlantic) Fishing around Block Island has been great. Everyone is hooking up to fish. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) and Tautog are biting as well. The North side of Block Island around the ledges are holding plenty of Cod. The humps in 60-70 ft have the best sizes. Clams and Squid are doing well to hook them. Anglers are even catching them using Green Crabs while targeting Blackfish (Tautog).

Charlestown Fishing Report

INSHORE – Tautog are closer to the mouth of the bay. Anglers fishing deeper water are doing well also. Stripers (Bass, Striped) are hit or miss off the beaches from here all the way to Charlestown and even south of Westerly. The Breach ways are hit or miss. Bluefish are scattered around Providence. Boat anglers are having to keep an eye on the wind forecasts. As there’s still a good scattering of fish, all you need to catch fish is a break in the weather. Ocean State Tackle is the largest Squid Jig Supplier in the nation with over 144 different types of jigs. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal more tips and tricks on how to catch!

OFFSHORE – Cod (Cod, Atlantic), and Tautog can be found offshore. Both are very weather dependent. 65-90 ft are best for Tautog. Black Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are still around. Cod have been caught off of Block Island. The bite hasn’t been consistent due to weather.

BAIT REPORT – Squid can be caught around Newport. The bite varies depending on the wind. Yo Zuri Squid Jigs are doing well to hook them. The Rhode Island Bridge / Calamari Causeway is doing well. Peconic Point and Jamestown around Fort Wetherill and Fort Getty are productive as well.

Charlestown Fishing Report

INSHORE – Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) seem to have moved out at this point. They can be found in deeper water however there is still plenty to catch inshore. Tautog continue to do well into this week. Search local reefs and rock piles to find them. Green Crabs are the best bait. They will be moving to deeper water as the temperatures drop as well. You may find a few incidental catches of Scup mixed in. Closer to shore the Bass (Bass, Striped) are being caught along the beaches and rocks. The higher tide is best as the bait is pushed along the shoreline. There are plenty of Bluefish up to 10lbs mixed in. Search for the bait to find the fish. You can also look for birds to find them. Some of the schoolie Bass sizes can be caught right from shore. Cod (Cod, Atlantic) are just beginning to bite on some off the reefs and rocks farther out. They are mixed in with the Tautog. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal more tips and tricks on how to catch!

OFFSHORE – The Cod (Cod, Atlantic) fishing is great this week. They are at the East Ground and Shark’s Ledge. Black Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are mixed in. There are some big fish up to almost 6lbs. Recently there were some nice Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin) to 90 lbs in the Hudson Canyon. It’s just been tough to find a break in the wind.

BAIT REPORT – Bunker (Menhaden) can be caught in the river this week. They are also plentiful along the beaches. Herring are mixed in under the Gannets.

INSHORE – Stripers (Bass, Striped) are more up on the beach. There are tons of schoolies around. Eels are working well at night for anglers casting off the shore or drifting off the beach. Tautog are still biting well in deep water to 70 ft. The numbers are great but there aren’t a ton of keepers yet. Jigs and Crabs are best to hook them. Charlestown Fishing Report

INSHORE – A lot of Striped Bass (Bass, Striped) and Bluefish are coming through on their fall run. Water is still warm and there are tons of Albacore (Bonito, Little Tunny) running as well! Stripers are up to 46 lbs off the beach. The bite is good up and down East Beach and over towards Watch Hill Reef and Sugar Reef. Bass and Bluefish are good on the reefs. Tautog are biting well into this week. Anglers are getting easy limits although the water has been rough. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal more tips and tricks on how to catch!

OFFSHORE – Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) are up in the Long Island Sound area. We expect migrating Bluefin in the next few days. Block Island Sound has been great for them as well. We’ve had a lot of anglers popping in to buy 80lb braid. Cast or troll for them using spreader bars. You can also live line Bunker to hook them as well.

BAIT REPORT – Bunker (Menhaden) continue to run inshore this week.

Charlestown Fishing Report

INSHORE – There are a lot of Gator Blues (Bluefish) running the beach. They are up to 16 lbs. Some Stripers (Bass, Striped) are mixed in however they aren’t as prominent. They are from 18-26 lbs and you’ll have to put a little work in. The wind has made fishing tough into this week. There are gale warnings in place at this time. Conditions are expected to lay down over the next few days. Those who are heading out are staying on shore as the water is pretty choppy. The water temperature is finally dropping so we expect a more active bite as Fall continues. Tides are running high. The surf is clean, but high. Shops are beginning to start their closes. Stay safe when heading out this week! PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal more tips and tricks on how to catch!

BAIT REPORT – Bunker are in the wash. Mullet are on the inside of the breach ways which is perfect to stay out of the wind.

Charlestown Fishing Report

INSHORE – There are tons of Blackfish (Tautog) being caught this week. There’s been fish up to 9lbs which is great. The past weekend was kinda rough. There are still Albies (Bonito, Little Tunny) around as well as some Bonito (Bonito, Atlantic) on the West wall. Live Lining Porgy (Scup) has been great for Bass (Bass, Striped) as well. The recent Striper tournament was won with a 35lb fish. Big Bluefish can be caught on the chunk off the beach. Fishing is great overall. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal more tips and tricks on how to catch!

OFFSHORE – We haven’t heard anything on Bluefin (Tuna, Bluefin) except from up north.

BAIT REPORT – There are unbelievable amounts of Menhaden (Bunker) in the river. They should be pretty easy to see.

INSHORE – Anglers are coming off a good week of fishing from shore. It’s becoming just a touch more sporadic. Anglers putting their time in are picking up decent fish. There are still a lot of local Stripers (Bass, Striped) up to 30 lbs. They have produced a consistent bite overall. Bluefish are mixed in. Boaters are doing well on Black Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black). Albies (Bonito, Little Tunny) are also still around. Stripers (Bass, Striped) are swimming the reef with Bluefish. The bite is comfortable, not crazy. Things are great at night or early in the morning. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal more tips and tricks on how to catch!

Albies (Bonito, Little Tunny) can be caught from shore but most of them are just out of reach. Middle of the night into the early morning is best. Charlestown Fishing Report

INSHORE – There is a lot of bait swimming. Porgy (Scup) fishing is great. There is clean water in the rivers and dirty water in the ocean. Bass (Bass, Striped) and Bluefish are hot due to this. There are multiple fish up to 32 inches. Albies (Bonito, Little Tunny) are running out front. They are just outside casting distance but are closer in towards Point Judith. The bite is great. The ridgeways are great at night using Topwaters such as SP Minnows or Super Strikes. Albies prefer Daddy Macs or anything with a slim profiles. The beaches are still a bit slow. There have been a couple good nights but fish are only up to 24 inches. Tautog has been great since August 1st. The fish didn’t push out so shore and boat anglers can catch them from 15 ft and out on structures. There haven’t been any Bonito (Bonito, Pacific) returning since the storm. Bluefish are scattered on the beaches. The sizes are random from day to day. Considering the recent storm the fishing has been great. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal more tips and tricks on how to catch!

OFFSHORE – Clean water can be found around 70 ft. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) and Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] are still swimming. The Fluke have returned after having left for a few weeks.

BAIT REPORT – Peanut Bunker (Menhaden), Killies and Chubs are swimming this week.
