Cedar Key Fishing Report
INSHORE – As usual, the Trout are the hot topic in the area. Anglers aren’t having any trouble finding or hooking them so far. Live bait is your best bet to hook them, although Gulp in New Penny is a solid alternative. They are beginning to push deeper with the unfavorable weather however we expect them to move back in once conditions settle down. The Reds on the other hand haven’t been as affected. They are swimming shallow shorelines and also preferring live bait. The dirty water doesn’t seem to bother them, so your usual spots should still produce. The occasional Tripletail are hanging out on the buoys along with scattered Flounder, Sea Bass and Sheepshead on structure.
OFFSHORE – Things are about par with the season in the area. Kings are just beginning to make an appearance but to see decent numbers you will have to be prepared to spend some time on the water. Cobia have also been caught as they begin their move in. They are up to 60 pounds. Anglers are targeting them with bucktail jigs, jerkbaits or swimbaits. Spanish seem to be following them in depths of 15-19 feet of water. Grouper are open, but seem to be a bit limited.

INSHORE – The bite is fairly typical for this time of year. On the flats we are seeing some Cobia. They have been caught around Anclote. Small Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are swimming with few keepers. Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) are on the flats. Snook (Snook, Common) and Redfish (Drum, Red) are inshore.
OFFSHORE – There is still some decent action offshore this week. Grunts (Grunt, White) and Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are swimming near shore. Farther out the Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater) and keeper Red Grouper (Grouper, Red) have been caught. Sharks are beginning to move in.
BAIT REPORT – There is plenty of Whitebait around.

INSHORE – The typical Winter fish continue to be the targets in this area as of late. Redfish, Flounder, Sheepshead and Trout are all being caught into this week. Redfish can be found in and around bushes and mangroves while the Trout seem to be mixing with Sheepshead around structure. If you are targeting Flounder, head to the piers for some of the best bite.

Cedar Key Fishing Report
INSHORE – Everything seems to be right on schedule for this time of year. Sheepshead are providing the most action for anglers into this week. You can find them nearshore, and as far out as 40 feet of water as well as inshore and as close as the grass flats in Cedar Key. Typical setups of live bait will consistently work well to hook them.
Redfish and Trout are doing their best to stay in warm water. Redfish are holding up shallow and very lethargic but don’t seem to be too picky on what they are taking. New Penny Shrimp or a Gulp in Pink Shine drifted right in front of their face is the best bet. Trout are similarly swimming grass flats in shallow water as well. Mouths of creeks are particularly a good place to begin your search in the morning during low tide.

Cedar Key Fishing Report
INSHORE – Typical seasonal fish are the main catches so far. Redfish and Trout are fishing shallow this week throughout the inshore. You can easily stay within 2 feet of water, especially in the Steinhatchee area. Targeting Trout has been productive during high tide in the river systems. Cobia and Spanish are beginning to move back in which is promising for a steady Spring bite. Flounder are providing a good bite as well this week. If you are fishing Shrimp or Berkley Gulp you are likely to hit some good sizes. Unsurprisingly Sheepshead continue to hold up on structure throughout the rivers.

OFFSHORE – Steinhatchee is definitely providing the best bite for anglers this week. They seem to have the most productive weather windows when anglers can find calm times to hit the water. Kingfish are showing up along with a closer bite of Sheepshead in 30 feet of water. On the bottom we are also seeing Amberjack. Towards Cedar Key the Spanish have begun their Spring run and anglers are eager to see them fire up for the season.

Suwannee Fishing Report
INSHORE – Redfish and Trout have been fishing well on grassy flats in the morning or incoming tide. The Redfish have really been coming out of the creeks taking Shrimp, Minnows or gulp on jig heads. Livetarget scaled Sardines in Ghost Amber color has been working well to hook them. Trolling lures such as gold/orange threadfins or Rapala X Raps in a subsurface Walker with a single hook are working well too. Whitebait will work well as the temperature creeps up. Lighter colors such as white or pink are also key to catching them.

OFFSHORE – There aren’t a lot of species open to harvest but you can find a decent mix of bottom fishing. Sheepshead have continued to bite on the nearshore reefs and wrecks. As you head further offshore you will start to find some Sea Bass and some catch and release Grouper and Snapper. The Amberjack bite has been the focus of most offshore trips, you’ll just have to head past 60 feet of water for decent fish.

Suwannee Fishing Report
INSHORE – Things are a bit quiet this week. Unsurprisingly the Trout are providing the most consistent bite from Cedar Key to Apalachee Bay. The numbers are decent although haven’t fired up quite yet. Towards Suwanee a majority of the fish are catch and release with a handful of slot sizes mixed in. Towards Apalachee Bay we are seeing a better mix. Fish in shallow to find them using artificials such as Pink Shine Gulp or Strike First Golden Brim.
Sheepshead are providing scattered action on structure this week. Shallow rocks are also holding Tautog and Grunts.
Redfish are transitioning into their Spring patterns this week as they move to oyster bars, mouths of the rivers, tidal creeks and shorelines. Artificials are working well to hook them. Head out in the late morning or early afternoon for the best bite. If you decide to mix things up and head a bit farther off the shore don’t be surprised to run into a few Flounder and Black Sea Bass.

Cedar Key / Suwannee Fishing Report
INSHORE – From Cedar Key to Steinhatchee Redfish have been tucked into very shallow water. Any of the boats that draft more water, have had to wait for high tide to get into the Redfish. Reports from Apalachee Bay haven’t been very promising for Redfish. Trout fishing across big bend has been decent with most anglers finding better fish on grass flats and oyster bars. If you happen to find some inshore rock piles there will also be a decent Sheepshead bite there as well.
OFFSHORE – Sea Bass and Amberjack are the big legal catches this week. Throughout the week the various Captains we spoke with were all in agreement that 50 ft and out has been providing the best bite for both fish. Anyone wanting to fish for offshore Sheepshead will only have to travel to 40 ft of water for the good sizes. Some King Mackerel have been caught in 60 ft of water while trolling Cigar Minnows.

INSHORE – Redfish (Drum, Red), Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Sheepshead are the main targets for anglers this week. You can basically fish the flats to find all three. Shrimp on a jighead has been the best setup. Make sure you are fishing a moving tide. The incoming tide, during the day, has been most productive. We hope to see this continue into the weekend. Cedar Key / Suwannee Fishing Report
INSHORE – The Cedar Key Speckled Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are on fire on the grass flats in 3.5 to 5 feet of water. We’re using popping corks and a 1/4oz jig head with live Shrimp or gulp baits. Keep it just off the bottom, we usually drift some till we start catching pretty steady, then go back and anchor. The Redfish (Drum, Red) can get challenging in Winter, they like to move back to the warmer creeks in the Marsh area but you can still get them in the afternoon on your favorite bar areas. The Sheepshead are biting now around the pilings and inshore Rock piles, using Shrimp or Fiddler Crabs, use a jig heads heavy enough to get to the bottom and be ready, they are tricky. We look for the bigger breeders to be biting on offshore rock piles late in January through March. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal tons of information and tips to catch!
OFFSHORE – Well, the Gag Grouper (Grouper, Gag) season is shut down now and the Red Grouper (Grouper, Red) season is open but they have been hard to find. Amberjack (Jack, Amberjack Greater) season is open now and they’re plentiful around wrecks and offshore structure. The Red Snapper are very plentiful and you must release them unharmed, but they’re still fun to catch. The Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are biting great and the bigger ones seem to be in 45 to 55 feet of water but there are plenty in 25 to 30 feet as well. And of course the Grunts (Grunt, White) are always hungry and good to eat. It’s worth checking your favorite Sheepshead areas, they should be biting very soon and they’re great to eat. We make some chum out of canned Clams and Mackerel, rice, sand, Menhaden oil and salt water, stir up and spoon over board. It can turn them on for you.

Cedar Key / Suwannee Fishing Report
INSHORE – With the recent weather anglers have been limited to inshore fishing and even then it’s been hit or miss depending on the conditions. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) and Grunts (Grunt, White) are swimming nearshore to 8 miles. Sheepshead are beginning to bite on small Shrimp or Fiddler Crabs. Frozen Shrimp is working just as well as live. The Reds (Drum, Red) are sporadic but can be found on the oyster bars and around the islands during nicer days. Colder nights are moving them back into the marsh areas. There are some keepers out there along with limits of Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) on the grass flats. They are more plentiful on the moving tide. Avoid the low tide as the grass flats will be too shallow. We hope to see things improve with more favorable weather. The pier downtown is producing both Redfish (Drum, Red), Sheepshead as well as Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and the occasional Whiting (Kingfish, Southern). The flats are still holding Trout. Mackerel seem to have backed off as the water temperature has dropped. Shrimp seems to be the key bait for all the inshore fish. Reef fishing slows down at this time of year however fishing overall has been great. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below for additional tips and tricks!

INSHORE – Anglers are doing well on Reds (Drum, Red) and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) into this week. There has been some great inshore fishing this week despite the wind. Generally Shrimp will do well to hit them although if there is bait running it is always a good idea to try to match that. Redfish (Drum, Red) are biting great on the oyster bars, cuts, channels and up against the islands. Shrimp and cut Mullet will hook them. Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) are still here. They are a bit in close but mostly about 4 miles out off of Seahorse Reef. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below for additional tips and tricks!
OFFSHORE – The Kings (Mackerel, King) showed up recently so there are tons being caught in about 25-38 ft of water around the rock piles and live bottom areas. Some anglers are trolling, most are free lining live bait with a cork or free lining a dead Threadfin herring while bottom fishing. Grouper (Grouper, Gag & Grouper, Red) are still not on fire. Anglers are catching them but there aren’t a lot of keepers. Red Grouper are difficult to find. The bite seems to be from 45-60 ft of water.

INSHORE – Inshore the Mackerel (Mackerel, Spanish) are off the flats. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are beginning to bite well. Redfish (Drum, Red) are on fire. Live, dead or cut Mullet will be the key to catching them. There hasn’t been much on Tarpon and Tripletail. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below for additional tips and tricks!
OFFSHORE – The area has recently opened back up following the storm earlier in the month. The Red Snapper are still thick as thieves. You can easily catch great numbers however keep in mind you can’t keep them. Kings (Mackerel, King) are scattered but always around. Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) are on the reefs in 30 ft this week. Grunts (Grunt, White) are biting along with Grouper (Grouper, Gag) are biting however the sizes are mixed.

INSHORE – The only thing we’ve really heard is that anglers are catching really big Snook (Snook, Common) around the Islands. Your best bet is to use Live Finger Mullet, or cut larger Mullet. Most of the shops just opened back up today after being slammed by the storm. We look forward to filling you in on what happens over the weekend. Pop into the shops and say hi. INSHORE – The fishing has been a bit slow due to the weather pattern moving in. We have not had many reports as anglers are mostly staying inside. A lot of Charters have been cancelled as well. The target has been mainly Reds (Drum, Red) and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted). It has been way too rough to head offshore at this point. We hope to see the bite heat up after the weather clears up. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – With this system pushing through most of Florida, we expect a lot of wind and tough conditions. Most of the fishing from last week should fire back up once the storm passes. Expect to see the rainfall cool off inshore waters. This will help some of the fish that prefer cooler conditions. Stay informed on all the coming weather systems using your Pro Angler App!

INSHORE – Anglers are heading back on the water after all the recent weather. We are seeing Sharks (Shark, Bull & Shark, Blacktip) and Tarpon turn up so far. The Tarpon have been turning up more and more by the docks. They are hitting Mullet either live or dead. The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are biting again in 4-6 ft of water on the grass flats. Redfish (Drum, Red) are plentiful on the incoming tide on the oyster bars around the island. Tripletail has been great this year and we’ve even seen some fish pushing 20lbs this week. Spanish Mackerel (Mackerel, Spanish) are still around. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish listed below the report for more angling tips and tricks!
OFFSHORE – The Grouper (Grouper, Gag) bite has been tough. There are a lot of short Gags this week. Fish 60-80 ft of water for some better sizes. There are plenty to catch up to 45 ft but keepers are few and far between. Red Grouper (Grouper, Red) are scarce as anglers aren’t finding many. They are in at least 50 ft. Sea Bass and Grunts are great. Kingfish (Mackerel, King) have moved out but should return in the fall. Red Snapper (Snapper, Red) are catch and release but they are plentiful. Threadfin, Sardines and live Pinfish will do the trick to catch them.
BAIT REPORT – There are Mullet running this week

INSHORE – The weather has kept a lot of anglers off the water as of late. Conditions have been quite unfavorable for anglers the past few days however we hope to see things clear up for the weekend. Prior to the system the Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Mackerel (Mackerel, Spanish) were hot inshore. The Trout were in 6 ft and deeper due to the high water temperature. They might be shallower now in places where there isn’t too much freshwater mix. Kingfish (Mackerel, King) and Cobia were on the reefs. INSHORE – The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) have been a little finicky, but are biting in 6 to 10 feet of water over grass flats and out by the reef and fishing on the bottom, slow jigging with Shrimp or gulp baits. The Redfish (Drum, Red) are biting good around the islands and oyster bars, the bite seems best on incoming tide and live baits or Mullet also seem to be the best. We also have had a lot of Tripletail being caught around markers, buoys and floating debris, using Shrimp free lined to them. The Sharks (Shark, Bull & Shark, Blacktip) are plentiful and a lot of fun too. OFFSHORE – Well, Snapper season is over, but they’re still here, just release them unharmed, they’re plentiful in 50 to 80 feet of water on good hard and live bottom areas and they love cut Threadfins and Sardines. The Gags (Grouper, Gag) are playing hard to get, but they are in 25 to 80 feet of water, using cut baits and live bait. Some divers have been getting nice hogfish and Gags when they won’t bite. The Red Grouper (Grouper, Red) are also playing hard to get but we are catching some in 50 to 70 feet on live bottom areas. There are still some kings and Cobia around but they’re not so plentiful. We also are still getting some nice sized Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) in 60 feet of water using Sardines. So come on down and enjoy the fun.

INSHORE – This week we are finding great Redfish (Drum, Red) in the shallows around the oyster bars and the islands. The best bait has been cut Mullet or finger Mullet. The gulp bait is working as well fished on the bottom. The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are finicky in the hot water. Go to roughly 10 ft of water on the outside grass flats and use a quarter oz jighead and Shrimp. Jig it on the bottom slowly. This is working better than the popping corks. Tripletail are hot around the buoys and floating debris. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish listed below the report for more angling tips and tricks!
OFFSHORE – Gags and Reds (Grouper, Gag & Grouper, Red) are there but we haven’t seen a ton of them. They are in various depths. Reds are from 50-60ft while the Gags are in closer. The Red Snapper (Snapper, Red) are doing well too however keep in mind they are catch and release. Kings (Mackerel, King) are scattered on the wrecks so the bite is not consistent. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) and Grunts (Grunt, White) have been reasonably hot.

Both are hitting on live shrimp, mud minnows and finger mullet. The Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) seem to be on the grass flats and on the southeast side of seahorse reef in 8 to 10 ft. of water. The Kingfish (Mackerel, King) are here too, look for bait pods in 35 to 45 ft. of water, areas south west and west of cedar key have been good. INSHORE – Anglers continue to wait for the Flounder (Flounder, Southern) bite to turn on. Anyone who puts some time in will find them however they are not hot yet. The Reds (Drum, Red) are biting well this week. Anglers are jigging for them with Mullet Strips or Mud Minnows. Search the oyster bars and the islands to find them around the incoming tide. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are still in the front. Anglers are jigging for them as well in about 10 ft of water. A few Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) are mixed in but they are not the main target so far. Cobia continue to move around and have become more difficult to find. Cedar Key Marina II is having 25% off outboard motor service. Check out the 4 of July Cookout for some great food and better company!
OFFSHORE – Not a lot has changed into this week. The Kings (Mackerel, King) and Bonita (Bonito, Little Tunny) have been swimming. The Bonita is still being free-lined. Red Snapper (Snapper, Red) continue to do well form 50-60 ft. They will eat just about anything including Sardines and Threadfins. INSHORE – Redfish (Drum, Red) are on a good bite this week. The Redfish are scattered around the islands and banks this week. They are even catching them on the Trout flats. We have great reports of Cobia and Tarpon as well. Lots of Sharks (Shark, Bull) are swimming the inshore. Since the water is heating up the Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are slowing down. There are tons of Catfish (Catfish, Gafftopsail) have been caught. Most anglers are limiting out on good fish. There are some great artificials at Doug’s Bait and Tackle. Stop in and stock up!
OFFSHORE – There are more Red Snapper (Snapper, Red) than we had ever seen the past few weeks. Anglers are excited to see it open again. Gags (Grouper, Gag) were hot the first week. INSHORE – We have not seen a lot of chance from last week so far. The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Redfish (Drum, Red) continue to bite around 6 ft of water. Shrimp and similar artificials will work well to hit them, especially during a slack tide. Cobia are also still biting in great sizes and numbers. Look around the markers and inshore rock piles to find them.
OFFSHORE – We are seeing quite a bit of action from the offshore this week. The Kings (Mackerel, King) are still biting. They are chasing the bait fish so look out for them. Free lining live bait or frozen Threadfins has been productive. The Grouper (Grouper, Gag) bite continues into this week. They are mixed in with some Reds (Grouper, Red) that are a bit thin this week. Look for them in roughly 60 ft of water. Pinfish has been best to hook them.

INSHORE – Seatrout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Redfish (Drum, Red) are biting well this week. Trout seem to be better in 5-6 ft of water in slack tide. Popping corks with Shrimp or Gulp are working particularly well. The past few weeks the Cobia are hot and the sizes are great. They are swimming the markers and really close inshore rock piles in 18 ft or shallower.
OFFSHORE – The Kingfish (Mackerel, King) have shown up this week. They are from 25-35 ft of water looking for bait fish. This area will pretty much guarantee some good fish. Some anglers are trolling or bottom fishing with free lines out back using live bait or frozen Threadfin Herring. Gags (Grouper, Gag) are plentiful but they are catch and release. Reds (Grouper, Red) have made a bit of an appearance but they are not thick. They are in 50-60 ft biting on live Pinfish or frozen bait. INSHORE – The Speckled Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are still biting great on the grass flats in three to four and a half feet of water using popping corks and jig heads with shrimp, gulps, or your favorite soft baits. The Spanish Mackerel (Mackerel, Spanish) are biting good too using the same methods as the Trout or with 1/8 oz jig free lining and it helps if you put out a chum bag too. The Redfish (Drum, Red) are doing well on incoming tides up around the islands, oyster bars and cuts between the bars, using jig heads with Shrimp, mud Minnows, finger mullet or cut whole Mullet. The Cobia showed up pretty good this last weekend around inshore rock piles, channel markers and close reef structures. We had best luck with live pins, but gulp eels on a buck-tail jig and tube lures work well too, they love to chase something moving away from them. We fish two on the bottom and keep pitching a lure and keep a live pin ready to pitch when we spot one, it’s a blast when they crush your bait. So come on down and enjoy our island paradise Safe boating n tight lines Till next time, tight lines n safe boating
OFFSHORE – The Red Grouper (Grouper, Red) is still elusive but we expect them to return soon. The Gags (Grouper, Gag) and Snapper (Snapper, Gray) have been plentiful but must be released unharmed. The Grunts (Grunt, White) and Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are biting great using Squid and Sardines. The Kings (Mackerel, King) showed up this week, some people like to slow troll plugs or live bait, we just set out a free line with a frozen Threadfin or live bait, while bottom fishing so we do waste time and the Kings are generally around good hard bottom & live bottom areas. The Cobia are around as well, so keep a pitch rod ready for when a Cobia shows up.

The Redfish (Drum, Red) are biting good around the islands and oyster bars, the best bite seems just before and after high tide using live Shrimp and mud minnows on a jig head working it on the bottom. If you are getting hung up a lot, change to a cork and a leader just long enough to keep your bait just off the bottom. INSHORE – The Sheepshead are biting good around the piers & docks, using Shrimp or Fiddler Crabs. Most people are using a knocker rig with a 1/0 or 2/0 hook. The Speckled Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are biting good too, but better in the afternoon in 4 to 6 ft of water on the grass flats and near the oyster bars. The Redfish (Drum, Red) are more in the back marsh area’s but on the warmer afternoons they make their way out to the shallow oyster bars and up close to the islands. Both the Trout and Redfish are hitting best on live Shrimp & mud Minnows or frozen finger Mullet and fishing slow with jigheads working them back to you. Please come on down and enjoy our island paradise Safe boating n tight lines Till next time, tight lines n safe boating
OFFSHORE – The Sheesphead are starting to bite on the offshore Rock piles and reefs using Shrimp and knocker rigs. The Sea Bass, Black and Grunts are hitting great in 20 to 50 ft, using Sardines and Squid. The Amber Jacks (Jack, Amberjack Greater) are on the wrecks using live bait or butterfly jigs. The Grouper, Gag are hitting but you cannot harvest them & please release unharmed. The Grouper, Red are a little harder to find but are in 45 to 60 ft on live bottom areas using live bait or frozen Threadfins, Sardines and northern Mackerel. This cold weather won’t last, so come on down and wet a line.

INSHORE – Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Reds (Drum, Red) have begun to move out to the grass flats again. Anglers are using live Shrimp, finger Mullet or a variety of gulp. Sheepshead are still around the piers and around the inshore rock piles. Frozen Shrimp fished on the bottom with a knocker rig has been the best way to hook them. There have been a few Sharks caught in the area which is unusual for this time of year. Check out the Big Fish contest – Biggest Trout, Redfish or Sheepshead wins $100 for each fish! Check in at the marina and bring your fish in at the end of the day. See Hookedup Charters for more info!
OFFSHORE – There are some Sea Bass, Black and Grunt, White throughout the offshore reefs on the bottom. There are also some Sheepshead holding up on the closer reefs that are great sizes. Grouper, Gag and Grouper, Red are being caught but are catch and release right now. You’ll have to look past 60 ft to find them. Things are slow however if you put your time in you`ll find some fish.

Cedar Key / Suwannee Fishing Report
INSHORE – Not too much of a fishing report to give but if you are into sailing we would have a lot to talk about because of the wind. There is some light at the end of the tunnel because it looks like this weekend will have better conditions. Just before this series of cold fronts I was catching my limit of Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Redfish (Drum, Red) on the keys just on the south side of the Homosassa River. The Trout were biting D.O.A. 5.5 glow jerk baits and Redfish were eating live Shrimp. In the Crystal River at Kings Bay there are some Trout, Ladyfish and Redfish. The Trout are mixed in with the Ladyfish. Fish the north shore out to Bagley’s Cove with a MirrOlure LiL’ John. For the Redfish use live Shrimp at the rocky points from the Yacht Club to Walsh Island. In the Homosassa River the Blue Waters have some small Snook (Snook, Common), big Jacks (Jack, Crevalle), Ladyfish and Mangrove Snappers (Snapper, Gray). The Snook, Jacks and Ladyfish are hitting jigs and Mangrove Snapper are biting live Shrimp. Further down river the deeper holes are holding some Drum, Black. The best bait is Shrimp on the bottom. At the Sea Hag in Steinhatchee the report is there are small Trout in the river and most of the big Trout are being caught outside. A lucky angler brought in a 28-inch trout this week. The better areas are Rocky Creek and Dallus Creek. The best baits have been live Shrimp on a jig head and Gulp! Shrimp in new penny or new penny/chartreuse tail. If we get a break this weekend look for afternoon incoming high tides.
OFFSHORE – Capt. Che’ Ruble reports that offshore the 30 to 40 foot range, at surface and bottom water temperatures were the same at 56 degrees and no action. When he move out to 50 to 60 feet the bite was very good but slow to get started. Gag Grouper (Grouper, Gag), Red Grouper (Grouper, Red) and Red Snapper (Snapper, Red) were the hard fighters. To compliment the fish box of Red Grouper there were big Sea Bass, Black and big Grunts at every rock. A few Sheepshead were being caught before the big wind offshore.

INSHORE – There has been such cold and windy weather it has been difficult for anglers to get on the water. During the breaks anglers are seeing Sheepshead on the inshore rock piles and around the docks. All the fish are quite slow and anglers have to put their time in. Search the deeper channels in between the flats to find fish. Once we see some warmer temperatures the fish should jump right back on the flats. Until then we are seeing a spotty Red (Drum, Red) and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) bite.
OFFSHORE – When anglers can get out there are large Sheepshead on the offshore wrecks. There are also reports of Sea Bass, Black and Grunts mixed in. There are no reports of Grouper, Red so far however there are tons of catch and release Grouper, Gag. There are Snapper, Red as close as 50 ft of water which are also catch and release. They are not common so far in however.

INSHORE – The wind and rain have kept most anglers off the water both inshore and offshore this week. INSHORE – There may still be some Snapper, Vermillion and Snapper, Gray swimming around 100ft for angler who can get out when the weather settles down. Grouper (Grouper, Gag & Grouper, Red) are swimming but they are still catch and release right now.
OFFSHORE – Things are slowing down a little bit around the flats. The Reds (Drum, Red) and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) have moved into the creeks. It’s not easy to get into the creeks due to the tide however some anglers are still managing. Live Shrimp is working really well along with plastic new penny gulps and mirrolures. New Penny is the hot color this week.

INSHORE – The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are biting great on the grass flats and seem to be doing best in 4 to 5ft of water using popping corks with a leader about 3.5 ft long and an eighth or quarter oz jighead. Tip them with either live or frozen Shrimp, Mud Minnows or frozen Finger Mullet, also 5 inch gulps and your favorite soft baits work just fine too. Most people are catching their limit and the sizes are good. The Redfish (Drum, Red) are biting good too up close to the oyster bars and islands using same baits, but we are having better luck using just the jighead without the popping cork. The Sheepshead are biting around the docks and rock piles using shrimp or their favorite, Fiddler Crabs. This unusually warm winter has got the fish biting like crazy, so come on down!!!
OFFSHORE – Now that Grouper (Grouper, Red),Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater), and Triggerfish (Triggerfish, Ocean) are open we’re looking at catching Red Grouper in 45 to 60 ft of water and the Ajs around the wrecks in 60 ft. The Sea Bass, Black and Grunts will be biting good as well. We are using frozen Threadfins, Sardines and Northern Mackerel for the Grouper, Triggers, Sea Bass and Grunts. The Ajs love live Pinfish but they also like diamond and butterfly jigs too. There still may be some Kingfish (Mackerel, King) around due to the still warm water anglers should be prepared for those too. I generally just throw a free line out the back with a frozen Threadfin while bottom fishing, when you hear the drag screaming pick it up and hold on, WooHoo. INSHORE – The Reds (Drum, Red) were hitting well the past week however this seems to be the only fish turning up so far. The rivers are producing well so far, especially on live Shrimp or similar artificials such as DOA or vudu. There are no signs of Flounder (Flounder, Southern & Flounder, Gulf) yet but we don’t expect them to have moved out.

INSHORE – Reds (Drum, Red) are holding up at the heads of the rivers this week. They are loving Shrimp under a popping cork. They have also been in the creeks as well. Sheepshead are catching well off the piers. Anglers are filling up coolers and turning in great sizes. Fiddler Crabs are always a bait preference for them. Flounder (Flounder, Southern & Flounder, Gulf) are making an appearance recently however the bite is not frequent yet. They are doing well on Mullet.
BAIT REPORT – Mullet is running so far this week.

Cedar Key / Suwannee Fishing Report
INSHORE – Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Reds (Drum, Red) are turning up mixed in with some Mackerel, Spanish on live Shrimp and Finger Mullet. Gulps are working as an artificial alternative and producing fairly well too. The slow sinking baits are the best bet however the Trout are hungry and will hit just about anything you put in front of them. Once the cooler weather sets in we can expect to see bigger sizes and increased bite.
OFFSHORE – There have been reports of Mackerel, King about a mile or two off the beach. They are hitting pretty well coming up in decent sizes however the next cold front is expected to move them out for the season. Live bait is always a good choice however there are no specific reports of one being more effective than another so far.

Cedar Key / Suwannee Fishing Report
INSHORE – The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are biting and are on fire using live Shrimp Gulps-Finger Mullet and live Mud Minnows on a popping cork with a leaded just long enough to keep it off the bottom and a 1/4 oz jig head. Cast it out away from boat and pop it, then let it set for a minute, and wham o, fish is on. The grass flat areas at 3 to 5 feet are doing well and the Redfish (Drum, Red) are doing great also. But fish more to the islands and oyster bars, using same baits or fresh cut mullet, they can’t resist it. The Sheephead are starting to bite around the piers and rock piles, using Fiddler Crabs and Shrimp, chumming helps too.
OFFSHORE – The Gags (Grouper, Gag) are biting and are also on fire in 25 to 40 feet of water, using Threadfins, live Pinfish and cut Mullet or any of your favorite frozen baits, they are hungry. Remember the season for them to keep ends Dec. 3rd. So all Gags except Grouper, Scamp. Are closed after the 3rd of Dec. but they’re still fun to catch and release though. There were two Cobia caught last week and still a couple Kingfish around. The Sea Bass, Black and Grunts are biting good using Squid or Sardines, using lighter tackle is quite fun.

Cedar Key / Suwannee Fishing Report
INSHORE – Seatrout, Spotted is the target for most anglers this week. They are absolutely on fire just about everywhere from the flats to the creeks through the mouths. Reds (Drum, Red) were doing the same however their bite has begun to slow down. They are still hitting well but not as hot as last week. Shrimp has been the best live bait and cut bait has proven to be very productive as well. As far as artificials go, gulp has been great or any soft plastics in white with a chartreuse tail.
OFFSHORE – There are still plenty of Cobia swimming the reef and they are accompanied by lots of Mackerel, King as well. The cold weather has not yet pushed them South so the bite is still pretty decent.
BAIT REPORT – There are lots of bait pods anywhere from the reef to in close. They are all moving right now so there should be no trouble catching Mullet, Glass Minnows, Bluerunners and Threadfin.

Cedar Key / Suwannee Fishing Report
INSHORE – The front that is making its way through has produced some great fishing this week. Reds (Drum, Red) have been coming up in great sizes along with Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and some smaller Sheepshead. Live Shrimp and Cut Mullet are working for all of these species as well as offshore. Pinfish are becoming a challenge to find but are an excellent bait when netted. Most of them have moved off the flats by now with the water change. Gulps and saltwater assassins are great artificial alternatives. The color depends on the water clarity and temperature from day to day.
OFFSHORE – The bite has continued offshore this week. The temperature has come down so Grouper, Gag have finally moved into the 30-40 ft range. There have also been reports of Mackerel, King passing through the 80 ft mark. Cobia have also been reeled in a little closer around 30 ft or 12 miles off the coast.
BAIT REPORT – There was a lot of Mullet swimming prior to the front so they may be spotty and on the move at this point. Pinfish have made their way from the flats to the deeper water as well.

INSHORE – Seatrout, Spotted and Redfish (Drum, Red) are absolutely on fire in this area. Anglers are tearing them up on Live Shrimp which is the most popular. They are also biting new penny or sweet and sour chicken gulps. Jigheads and cajun thunders are good too.
OFFSHORE – The wind has been pretty strong this past week and not a lot of anglers have made it offshore. As the weather cools down the Grouper (Grouper, Red & Grouper, Gag) are expected to move in from the 50 mark and still be hitting live Pinfish. Anglers heading out this weekend can always consult our Tips feature which provides additional information and suggestions to improve the catch. Sea Hag Marina can also provide an up to the minute fishing report so anglers know exactly what to expect.

INSHORE – There are plenty of species inshore to catch right now. Seatrout, Spotted are running thick and chasing live Shrimp under cajun thunder floats. They are also loving gulp as well. Redfish (Drum, Red) have been biting jerk shads in pink shine or sweet and sour chicken. Anglers are finding them along the grass points that stick out. Drifting across the rocks has been fairly productive. The Mackerel, Spanish bite is good as well as fishermen are circling bait pods using clark spoons. Along the bottom there have been reports of some Flounder, Southern biting live bait as well.
OFFSHORE – Not a lot of anglers have been heading offshore this week however there are still some reports coming in of some great catches. Although Grouper, Gag is the only species open this far out, everyone seems to be hooking Grouper, Red. Anglers are using live Pinfish, Squid or Goggle Eyes on sinkers. They can be found around the 50 mile mark as it has not been cool enough for them to move in closer yet.

Cedar Key / Suwannee Fishing Report
INSHORE – The Red (Drum, Red) bite has been good recently. Seatrout, Spotted have begun to bite as well as Sheepshead on the rock walls. Anglers are using mostly Finger Mullet or Cut Mullet as a live bait or gulps in new penny as an artificial alternative for Sheeps. Reds are hiding in the shallows, oyster beds and the highlands. Sheepshead can be found in pilings, piers and other structures chasing shrimp or Fiddler Crabs. The Trout are biting gulps of all color, there are no particular colors doing better than others as long as you have confidence in your lure. Live shrimp are generally the favorite. Anglers are using these below popping corks in as shallow as 4-6 ft.
OFFSHORE – There has been a strong Mackerel, Spanish bite for anglers trolling with spoons or anchoring and chumming. A steel leader is certainly worth using. Shrimp, Cut Mullet and Sardines are all working well as the Spanish are not picky. Kings (Mackerel, King) have finally showed up. Some are trolling for them with a wounded Blue Runner or Pinfish. Off the bottom there are Grouper, Gag that can be hooked while free-lining Threadfin Herring. At 25-45 ft. there are keeper sizes. Anglers expect to see Sea Bass, Black turn up in bigger sizes pretty soon.
BAIT REPORT – There are plenty of Mullet running and can be easily caught using a cast net.

OFFSHORE – The staff over at the Marina haven’t heard too much about the offshore conditions
INSHORE – Best time to fish here right now is high tide. Redfish have been fishing well. The sizes are all over the place. Some days everything outside slot size and other days they’re all in slot. The best bait for Redfish this time of year is either Mullet or cut Mullet. The Trout will take day glo Gulp baits. There’s been some opposing views on which colors are working best. The Trout aren’t out in full force yet due to high water temperatures. As things cool down, the Trout will start to come in thicker.

OFFSHORE – Chum a bit with a sabiki to catch your offshore bait. Your main offshore are Gags and Red Grouper. Bottom fish the reef, or troll some with stretch 30s, and big spoons. In the fall there is usually a good run of Mackerel, and Kingfish on the Reef. Cobia on the shallow rocks.INSHORE – Redfish around the islands and a good amount everywhere. The Redfish seem to be liking mullet, finger mullet, and cut mullet. Live Shrimp is working really well for Redfish too. Trout on the flats. Hook some Trout with Pinfish, cut or live either one. Shrimp is working well for them too. Trout need a popping cork. Black Drum are fairly plentiful around the oysters bars and clam leases.
BAIT REPORT – Mainly Mullet inshore. Offshore your bait is Menhaden, Threadfin, and Guff Hunters.

OFFSHORE – The crazy weather has stopped a lot of people going offshore. The storms seem to pop up in very unpredictable times. The last 3 weeks offshore fishing has been really tough.INSHORE – I spoke to Wendy at Doug’s Bait & Tackle, and she was telling me that the water temperature has dropped some and the Redfish have picked up with the change. There are Trout mixed in with them. While you can never go wrong with Shrimp, cut mullet is an excellent bait right now. As for the Permit, Wendy hasn’t seen any.
BAIT REPORT – There is a reason cut Mullet is working so well right now – there are plenty of good sized fish feeding on them out there! Remember Mullet are vegetarian, and Sabiki them up accordingly.
Doug’s Bait & Tackle is a very small Ma and Pa store. They carry combos, and offer very affordable prices because they are small. If you love to support small businesses, check out their live Shrimp, Pinfish, and Mullet (when it is available of course). OFFSHORE / INSHORE – While we wait for the offshore fishing to bounce back. We are into the summer swing of fishing around here. Which means that the main fish we are going to see is Redfish and Trout until further notice. Recently our sources have told us of reports of Trout out on the salt flats. Some of the Redfish have been coming back as well. Most people are using Shrimp right now to fish for them, but you could try other baits if you sabiki something up. Catfish are always around, if you get one, avoid the spikes. Cedar Key Fishing Report
Captain Howard of Howard’s Fishing Excursion in Cedar Key has seen a slow down in fish activity due to the increasing hot weather.Due to the devastating red tide that took place in the Panhandle last year, the fishing in the area is primarily done in shore although Captain Howard mentioned that some fisherman were getting grunt fish weighing up to 8 lbs offshore.
The offshore fishery is starting to rebound but expect slow fishing in this area for at least another 12 months. INSHORE – Captain Howard reports that the fish are more active in the morning and late in the evening due to high temperatures reaching 96 degrees.
Trout seem to be the most readily available sport fish in the Cedar Key/Suwannee and Captain Howard said the incoming tide is preferred.
When fishing Trout, Captain Howard goes with a curly trailed grub that ensures he keeps nuisance cat fish away and only hooks up with the fish he’s seeking.
Glass minnows are plentiful right now and would be the natural bait that a lot of fish in the area are sustaining themselves on.
Man made structure in the inshore areas are holding fish.
Captain Howard is always ready to take you fishing and remember, if you don’t catch a fish you don’t pay.

OFFSHORE – According to Captain John over at Hooked Up Charters the fishing offshore has not been as good as the fishing inshore. Red Grouper is the only grouper that is open right now; and good luck finding them. That being said game fish is plentiful, there are lots of Gag Grouper. Kingfish bite is also quite good right now. The Cobia were good in May and there are still some around, but expect them to taper off. Sea Bass and Grunts are around in good numbers as well, and keep your eyes open for the odd Triggerfish. You want to be bottom fishing and watching for bait pods and diving birds, those are surefire signs that the fishing is good. If you have sonar on your boat, look for hardbottom and coral sponge, fish love to live in those environments.INSHORE – The fishing here has been awesome, lots of Redfish, Trout, Sand Trout, and still catching some Spanish Mackerel around the islands. Be ready for a slacker Cobia inshore. Live Shrimp is a great bait, same with live Mud Minnows and frozen Finger Mullet – almost everything is biting on them. As for Artificials stick to different Flavour Gulp in new penny. White with a pink tail also works really well.
BAIT REPORT – Plenty of bait pods, and they are chock full of Glass Minnows, Sardines, and Threadfin Herring.
Captain John also owns Cedar Key Marina as well as Hooked Up Charters. He sells bait out of the marina, rent boats and charter boats, has a lodging, sells drinks, snacks, and has a snowball stand outside with 19 flavours. Give him a call or visit!
