Big Pine Fishing Report

INSHORE – There hasn’t really been anything out of the ordinary going on inshore throughout the Keys, that being said there is plenty of action to take advantage of. Seatrout are swimming the mangrove shorelines and can be easily caught in these areas. Key Largo in particular is always holding fish. Tarpon can be found as they make their way in. They are a bit hit or miss throughout the Keys as they haven’t arrived in some areas, or the weather has pushed them out. Searching flats and bridges with live bait will help you find them. Snapper may also be holding up on these structures. As usual, you can almost always find Bonefish and Permit hanging around. They aren’t very affected by the weather so heading out with Shrimp and Crabs when all else fails should give you a few fish.

OFFSHORE – The Keys has been the place to be this week. We are seeing a good variety of fish being landed. Both the numbers and sizes are great! Tuna have been one of the main focuses for anglers into this week. We are seeing plenty of Blackfin being hooked on feathers in colors like blue/white. Live bait is working as well. As we move towards Marathon, we are seeing better numbers and with the stream being so close in the Big Pine area anglers don’t even have to go very far to find them. Sailfish are another target for anyone heading offshore. Live bait has been the key to hooking them on the wrecks and reefs, especially around Islamorada. Dolphin and Wahoo have been caught in the mix as well. On the bottom the Snapper and Grouper always seem to be available on the reefs. Yellowtail in particular are in great sizes up to 6 pounds. Muttons have also been caught, but if you are targeting them you may have to be prepared to head farther out. Keep in mind, Grouper are catch and release in some areas, so check your Pro Angler App to determine what is legal to harvest.

INSHORE – The bridges are fishing well with small Live Target finger Mullets for big Grays (Snapper, Gray) and Jacks (Jack, Crevalle). They are biting well in the morning. Snook (Snook, Common) were following our baits however they weren’t feeding. Pilchards are a great live bait choice. The flats around the back are holding Bonefish, Permit and Tarpon that are slowly moving into the bridges. Search the mangroves for Snook as well.

OFFSHORE – The reefs are holding plenty of Snapper (Snapper, Gray & Snapper, Yellowtail & Snapper, Mutton) this week. Kings (Mackerel, King) continue to push through however they are a bit scattered. You can find them in roughly 70 feet of water. Out of Marathon, there are good numbers of schoolie Dolphin that we hope to see move in soon. The Blackfin (Tuna, Blackfin) continue to show up at sunset.

BAIT REPORT – Pilchards and Pinfish are around on the flats.

Big Pine Fishing Report

INSHORE – Fishing has been a bit tough in the area as of late, but don’t let that deter you from hitting the water. Permit, Bonefish, and Tarpon have been caught in the back and on the flats. In the deeper water areas there has been Mangroves on structured bottom. If you are targeting them, head out with live or dead Shrimp for the best catch.

OFFSHORE – This has been the time to head offshore and fish! Everything seems to be actively biting this week. Starting with Kings and Wahoo, we are finding them in the same depths this week. Unsurprisingly, they are both being caught on the troll and can be taken using Cigar Minnows or Ballyhoo on a 3 hook Kingfish rig. The trick to catching them is having different suspending depths of your bait, as they prefer to swim a bit more scattered out. There are some Bonito mixed in towards Key West.
Tuna are also a solid target to go after this week. Fishing from 150 to 300 feet of water, or alternatively heading to the Humps in Marathon has been successful. Bluefin have also been sighted as they were migrating through however they don’t seem to be feeding.
Dolphin and Sailfish are a bit scattered from Key Largo to Key West. Sails are more on the reefs while the Dolphin prefer the debris. Snapper, as usual can be caught on the bottom.

Big Pine Fishing Report

INSHORE – The inshore bite is a bit limited however determined anglers are finding some decent fish. The reliable Jack Crevalle and Barracuda can almost always be found, and are particularly thick around the bridges in Big Pine. Of course, we can’t forget about Ladyfish, Permit and Cero Mackerel that never seem to want to shut down. Nearshore structure is holding Snapper from Key Largo to Key West. Fish the outgoing tide for an active bite.
If you can find a chance to head out to some of the islands the Snook bite has been decent. If the weather is too rough you can also find them in the backcountry, but they won’t be as sizeable. Keep an eye out for Sharks too. If you’re not targeting them, you won’t want to lose your bait to them.

OFFSHORE – What a variety of fish we are seeing offshore this week! From Cobia to Amberjack to Marlin you never know what you’ll be reeling in until it breaks the water! Sailfish are providing a good day bite for anglers from Islamorada to Marathon. The recent wind will aid in kite fishing for them. There are many other scattered species including Dolphin, Wahoo, Tuna and White Marlin turning up as well. As we move towards Key West there were also a few Blue Marlin hooked this week and some Swordfish.
The bottom bite is almost always a good bet for anglers fishing offshore. Snapper are holding up on most of the reefs along with Hawk Channel in Marathon. Don’t be surprised if you reel in a Hogfish or catch and release Grouper with them as well. Amberjack have also been mixed in. Despite the wind anglers have had a great week full of surprises.

Big Pine Fishing Report

INSHORE – The wind early in the week moved a lot of the Tarpon out. They are moving back in although don’t seem to be feeding very heavily. If you plan to fish Bahia Honda make sure to bring some Hogy Plastics or Blue Crab. There has been lots of small Tarpon out of Islamorada and a decent morning bite from Key West. Flats fishing was pretty awful to start the week. Some calm afternoons have allowed Bonefish and Permit anglers to get on on the flats and catch fish with live bait. Redfish have also been on the flats and into the bushes, Snook have been mixed in near Islamorada.

OFFSHORE – There is lots of fish to be caught in the Florida Keys, the ‘reel’ challenge has been navigating the wind which is finally letting up. Reef fishing has been productive out of Key West and Big Pine Key for a healthy mix of Snapper. Amberjack and Almaco Jacks fish best out of Big Pine. If you are looking for King Mackerel we recommend heading all the way to Key West. Sailfish numbers have been fishable out of Key West, here and there out of Big Pine. While Trolling Ballyhoo anglers can expect some Mahi as well off of Big Pine. There hasn’t been a lot of Tuna caught this week and they have been on opposite ends of the Keys mixed with a few Bonito.

Sugarloaf Key Fishing Report

INSHORE – Flats anglers travelling to the middle Keys and west were welcomed with hungry Permit and Bonefish. King Mackerel were being caught in as little as 10 to 15 feet of water near Big Pine Key. Most of the Kings were taken while drifting live Pinfish. Things got tougher as you neared Florida’s southern mainland. Wind direction and water color saw tough fishing for multiple boats out of Flamingo. Bait wasn’t overly difficult to find, a few mile run towards the cleaner gulf water was the key to finding Pilchards. The big Snook towards the glades got a little hard to locate, but at least there were some hungry seatrout on most days.

OFFSHORE – There has been a decent Blackfin Tuna bite in the Keys as everyone from Key Largo to Key West managed a few good trips. Most of the hookups were a result of trolling Cedar Plugs over the numerous reefs during late afternoons. There were even a few Bluefin Tuna that buzzed past Key Largo and spooled a few anglers. Snapper fishing the reefs stayed strong on the Atlantic side while the gulf saw some Cobia on Rays in 12 feet of water.

Sugarloaf Key Fishing Report

INSHORE – Despite the fronts moving through this week there were still a handful of diehard anglers heading out to fish inshore. There is a variety of fish turning up this week. Mangrove Snapper has provided the most consistent bite from Key Largo to Big Pine as they hold up along bridges and structure. Where you find Snapper you will usually hook a Jack Crevalle or two. Unsurprisingly a handful of Barracuda have shown up in the same areas.
Red Drum and Spotted Seatrout have been sporadic at best. In Key Largo the Trout have been a bit more consistent on Shrimp under a cork however they seem to dissipate as we move towards Islamorada. Bait is beginning to move back in. If you are looking to catch your own you should have no shortage, especially towards Key West.

OFFSHORE – Blackfin Tuna are consistently turning up offshore this week from Islamorada to Key West. Anglers are making their way out to the deep water for a spectacular night bite. Good sized fish to 20 pounds have been steadily caught so far.
On the wrecks and reefs the Snapper bite has been off the hook! We are seeing a nice variety with a prominent bite of Muttons. Anglers are having no trouble at all snagging a few keeper sizes. Amberjack and Porgy are mixed in.
We are beginning to see King Mackerel arrive in the area from Key Largo to Key West. They are a bit more scattered throughout the offshore with the occasional Bonito and Wahoo swimming with them. Anglers fast trolling using heavy rigged lures in black/red or black/purple should find success.
Dolphin have provided a sporadic bite ranging anywhere from approximately 200-300 feet of water. Live bait has been the ticket to catch them.

Big Pine/Cudjoe/Sugarloaf Key Fishing Report

INSHORE – The reef is doing great this week. As close as 10-15 ft we are seeing good Mutton Snapper and Yellowtail (Snapper, Mutton & Snapper, Yellowtail). Flat lining or free lining Shrimp or cut Ballyhoo has worked well. Chum heavy to get them going. There hasn’t been much on Bonefish but there are Tarpon around. OFFSHORE – There is a few Wahoo being caught when anglers can get out. Dolphin are close in, just off the reefline. Tuna (Tuna, Blackfin) are out there as well. Trolling Sand Eels way behind the boat is also productive. The best bite has come out of the day bite.

BAIT REPORT – Pilchards are on the islands and ocean flats. Ballyhoo can be found in the slick right behind the boat while Snapper fishing. You can drop a cast net on them or use a Sabiki.

Big Pine/Cudjoe/Sugarloaf Key Fishing Report

INSHORE – So far this week, the Tarpon bite has been really good. The closer wrecks and reefs have been really good for Yellowtail (Snapper, Yellowtail), Mutton (Snapper, Mutton) and Grouper (Grouper, Gag). As long as you chum up your bait really well and use baits such as Bonita, Ballyhoo and Pinfish you’ll be sure to catch some fish.

OFFSHORE – Offshore has been tough this week for Mahi (Dolphin). The Mahi are gravitating to deeper waters that are very far offshore, making it tough for anglers to catch them. As the summer progresses, the Mahi are expected to be moving closer to shore.

Big Pine/Cudjoe/Sugarloaf Key Fishing Report

INSHORE – The backcountry is producing a great Seatrout, Spotted bite as well as some Snapper, Gray and small Grouper. They are great fish to target as they are in good numbers this week. The moving tide, especially the last half of the incoming tide is the best time to fish.

OFFSHORE – Dolphin have been caught so far this week. The reef is producing some Snapper, Yellowtail and they are hot this week. There have been some nice Snapper, Mutton turning up in this area as well. The gulf stream is about 25 miles out right now so you have to go too far for the bigger fish.

Big Pine/Cudjoe/Sugarloaf Key Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Seven Mile bridge is producing Snapper, Gray this week and is the main target for anglers not wanting to make the journey offshore. We expect this to continue into the weekend. Anyone who would like to fish a variety of species can always check out our Fish Guide which provides ample information to keep your lines tight.

OFFSHORE – There have been some decent Tuna, Bluefin being caught in the offshore this week. We have also seen some Wahoo in roughly 250-300 ft. Sails (Billfish – Sailfish) are starting to move in and the bite is slowly getting hot. Should be a couple weeks before we see a consistent bite. The Dolphin are also moving in slowly and should heat up around the same time. Kings (Mackerel, King) have been swimming in 50-150 ft of water and they are on fire. Some anglers are catching them incidentally while targeting Yellowtail.

Big Pine/Cudjoe/Sugarloaf Key Fishing Report

INSHORE – There has been some pretty foul weather in this area as of late. If you can find a break in the weather or a sheltered location you may find some Reds (Drum, Red) and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted). They bites are quite spotty at this point but we expect things to pick up when the weather improves.

OFFSHORE – If you can make it to the offshore you can expect to see some great sizes of Mahi (Dolphin) and Sails (Billfish – Sailfish) just outside the reef. The bite has been consistent when the weather cooperates. We expect the results to continue into the weekend and hope for favorable weather.

Big Pine/Cudjoe/Sugarloaf Key Fishing Report

INSHORE – Water temperatures are cold so things are slow. Snapper, Gray have picked back up while the Mackerel, Cero have moved back in but the cold front has pushed them deep. The water is expected to warm up so we should see things increase soon.

OFFSHORE – The reef has been producing some great Grouper, Gag that is catch and release. Snapper, Yellowtail and Snapper, Mutton can be found in the same area. Their bite is strong this week however the Mutton is not as consistent. Farther out we are seeing Wahoo, Tuna (Tuna, Blackfin) and Sailfish (Billfish – Sailfish). Live bait is great to catch any of these fish. Goggle Eyes and Blue Runners are great for the Wahoo, Sails and Tuna while the reef fish are biting for Ballyhoo. If you can get some Pilchards they will work great as well on the reefs.

BAIT REPORT – There is a spotty Pilchard run this week. Lower Keys Tackle has started carrying Trokar hooks and the Yeti cups are back in stock so stop in and stock up!

Big Pine/Cudjoe/Sugarloaf Key Fishing Report

INSHORE – The water is cooling down in the backcountry where the Snapper, Mutton are swimming as well. Permit and Tarpon are also swimming in this area and the sizes are decent. There are some Sharks (Shark, Lemon, Shark, Spinner & Shark, Bull & Shark, H.H Smooth) in as well that may take the fish you are pulling so make sure you give them a few minutes to make their way out of your area before you try to hook another. The Sharks are turning up in huge sizes and are being found around the bridges and harbors. If you are targeting them make sure you are releasing them and doing it safely for both yourself and the Shark.

OFFSHORE – There has been a lot of wind in the area as of late however there are a few good days to head out. The Sail (Billfish – Sailfish) have not showed up this year as strong as the past. The Mutton (Snapper, Mutton) bite has been great out front and in the back. Pinfish on a nice jig, other live bait or cut Ballyhoo around the Ballyhoo schools are the best baits to throw. There are some Dolphin in small sizes. Not all the great sizes have moved in yet and there are very few Wahoo. Everyone is still waiting for the wind to die down and anticipating when Dolphin picks up in mid March. There are some decent catches of Snapper, Yellowtail and Snapper, Gray as well.

Big Pine/Cudjoe/Sugarloaf Key Fishing Report

INSHORE – The wind is pushing a lot of the inshore fish around this week and where anglers can find shelter they have been out to fish. Jack, Crevalle and Snapper, Gray are hitting well throughout the inshore this week. They are being found towards the channels following the bait with the water change. Anglers are using Pilchards to find them.

OFFSHORE – The Wahoo bite has been awesome in the offshore this week despite all the harsh weather. The color change right off the reef is a great place to look. Anglers are slow trolling live bait to hook them.

BAIT REPORT – Pilchards are running right on the patch reefs. Blue Runners can be found in the deeper channels as well as Google Eyes and occasional Speedos on the reef.

Big Pine/Cudjoe/Sugarloaf Key Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – The weather has been far less than ideal for most anglers so far this week. For those who can get out there is a great Snapper, Yellowtail and Wahoo bite as they both begin to pick up. The Yellowtail are around 70 ft and with some bigger sizes being caught closer. Sails (Billfish – Sailfish) are becoming more plentiful with the cold weather in 150-250 ft. Right around the color change is where you can find them. Check out Lower Keys Tackle’s Weekly Seminar. Great topics, discussion and socials! January 21st will be all about Wahoo.

Big Pine/Cudjoe/Sugarloaf Key Fishing Report

INSHORE – There is even a good bite from the shore this week. Snook, Common are hitting live Pilchards right off the docks. If you can find a good spot from the shore with moving water you will be able to hit them as well. There have also been reports of Snapper, Gray from this area as well. The nearshore is holding decent sizes of Snapper, Yellowtail sizing from 16-23 inches. They are swimming in water from 25-50 ft. Anglers are chumming or using chunks of Ballyhoo on the drift. There are no reports of Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) so far this week.

OFFSHORE – Good amounts of Wahoo are turning up in the offshore so far. There is also the occasional Dolphin bite too. The edge of the gulf stream is the best place to look for them. Kingfish (Mackerel, King) bite is definitely on this week. They are holding up over the reefs on the outside edge. The numbers and sizes are great so far. There are no reports of Sails (Billfish – Sailfish) so far this week. Yeti Cups are in, stop in and stock up!

Big Pine/Cudjoe/Sugarloaf Key Fishing Report

INSHORE – The backcountry has been great so far this week and provides some shelter for anglers from the wind conditions. The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) bite has been doing well on live bait. Kings (Mackerel, King) and Cobia are swimming the nearshore wrecks as well. It has been too rough to get offshore so most of the focus has been here. The channels are full of Snapper (Snapper, Red & Snapper, Yellowtail) and they are turning up in good sizes too. The grass flats are holding more Trout along with a few Jacks (Jack, Crevalle) that can be caught running Ballyhoo. There is a mixed bag this week providing ample fishing for anglers.

OFFSHORE – When anglers can avoid the wind and get out to the offshore there is a solid Sail (Billfish – Sailfish) bite quite far out to 250 ft of water. They are loving live Ballyhoo that is running this week.

BAIT REPORT – Ballyhoo are running this week working well for inshore and offshore fish.

Big Pine/Cudjoe/Sugarloaf Key Fishing Report

INSHORE – The backcountry is holding some spotty Tarpon (Silver King) and Snook, Common. The Silver King will pick up when the water temperature drops in the next few months and they are just now beginning to show up on Pinfish. The area typically does not get a whole lot of Snook however there are a few in the shallower water this week.

OFFSHORE – Mahi (Dolphin) are doing well this week. They are mixed in with Tuna, Blackfin and the bite is strong as well. Wahoo have been scattered so far but the bite is expected to pick up in the coming months when the weather cools down. Sails (Billfish – Sailfish) are picking up off the reefs. They are loving live bait and Ballyhoo is always a great option for them on the troll. Snapper (Snapper, Yellowtail & Snapper, Mutton & Snapper, Gray) are all stacked up on the reef as well. Grouper, Gag are moving in at this point to the shallower water. Anglers can search the nearshore as opposed to the deep water this week.

BAIT REPORT – Pilchards are hitting off the coast this week while we have not seen any Goggle Eyes move in yet. Bluerunners are holding up on the wrecks so anglers can drop Sabiki rigs for them. Pinfish are here all year round and they are easy to catch with a trap on the grass flats. Cudjoe Key Fishing Equipment Sales is closed both Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Big Pine/Cudjoe/Sugarloaf Key Fishing Report

INSHORE – Anglers continue to see Ceros (Mackerel, Cero) throughout the inshore this week. They are coming in with great sizes so this has been a focus for anglers. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are still doing well, especially in the backcountry. The bite is expected to continue over the weekend and increase as the weather gets cooler.

OFFSHORE – The offshore bite is a little slower this week as there is only reports of a Wahoo bite in roughly 250-300 ft of water. The weather is expected to be great for the weekend so anglers can head out and hopefully we see some Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin & Tuna, Blackfin) reports come back in and maybe a Billfish – Sailfish or two.

BAIT REPORT – Pinfish, Pilchards, Green Crab, Shrimp and even some Ballyhoo are all working well for inshore and offshore fish this week. Check it out! Big Pine/Cudjoe/Sugarloaf Key Fishing Report

INSHORE – Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) have been the main target so far this week. They are on fire in the backcountry. Anglers are hitting their limits by drifting. There’s also some Ceros (Mackerel, Cero) around too. In the nearshore there have been reports of Mackerel, King coming up in decent sizes. This bite is expected to increase as well after the North wind this weekend. There have been no signs of Snapper (Snapper, Yellowtail) so far this week.

OFFSHORE – The Wahoo bite offshore has been great so far this week. Anglers are finding them around the 200 ft mark. They are coming close to the top and hitting just about everything. They are pretty packed up right now so all lines are going off at the same time. Most of the best bites have been to the West by Big Pine Key so far. Tuna, Yellowfin & Tuna, Blackfin reports are coming in as well this week with the temperature change. The Yellowfin are mixed in with the Sharks that can be caught on vertical jigs. The Blackfin have been around the 130 ft mark. The wind this weekend should push the Sails (Billfish – Sailfish) back up on the reefs come next week.

BAIT REPORT – Pilchards running thick this week around the bridges and just about everywhere. There should be no trouble stocking up on bait this week. Check it out! Big Pine/Cudjoe/Sugarloaf Key Fishing Report

INSHORE – The weather in this area has been absolutely dreadful this week with winds up to 30 mph. There have been no reports from the inshore this week as fishermen have not been able to find sheltered spots to get on fish. Most anglers are hoping the conditions lie down for the weekend. They suspect that the Snapper, Yellowtail and Seatrout, Spotted bite should continue in more favorable weather. If anglers are determined to head out they can always check out our tips feature which provides additional information and suggestions to help improve the catch. Tackle Box can also provide an up to the minute fishing reports so everyone knows exactly what to expect on the water.

OFFSHORE – The unfavorable weather has kept most boaters off the water this week. Determined anglers have reported Dolphin and Tuna, Blackfin from the deep water however there have been no specific depths or baits used.

BAIT REPORT – Netting bait has continued to be a problem this week as the wind has mixed them up pretty well. It is expected that there may still be Shrimp and Pilchards running however we won’t know for sure until the water calms down.

Big Pine/Cudjoe/Sugarloaf Key Fishing Report

INSHORE – The reef at approx. 25 ft of water has a steady Snapper, Yellowtail bite up near the Marathon area. Anglers have been chumming and using Ballyhoo to catch them. Now that the temperature has dropped there has been a lot of inshore changes. The Tarpon have slowed down and there are no reports yet this week. The Seatrout, Spotted should still be swimming however we have not seen any come in yet this week either. The Tripletail has become spotty but all of these bites are expected to pick up when the water settles from the wind last week.

OFFSHORE – The bite offshore has remained steady this week. There have been solid reports of Dolphin swimming around 600 ft, right outside the reef line. Anglers have also been targeting Billfish – Sailfish with naked or skirted Ballyhoo. The best color this week has been pinks, blues and white. There has not seemed to be any bait running in the offshore so it’s difficult to try to match. Anglers heading out this holiday weekend can always check out our Tips feature which provides additional information and suggestions that may improve the catch.

BAIT REPORT – Netting bait has continued to be a problem this week as the wind has mixed them up pretty well. Our sources suspect there may still be Shrimp and Pilchards running however we won’t know for sure until the water calms down.

Big Pine/Cudjoe/Sugarloaf Key Fishing Report

INSHORE – Due to the current weather conditions the inshore fish are pretty mixed up this week. The previous Snapper (Snapper, Yellowtail & Snapper, Gray & Snapper, Mutton) bite should continue on frozen Shrimp or chunks once the weather lies down. There is no guarantee they will still be in the same water as the wind may have pushed them to different locations.

OFFSHORE – The wind has been harsh in this area as of late. Not many boats have made it to the offshore, especially recreational. When the wind lies down our sources expect to see a continued Wahoo bite increase as the temperature will have dropped a little bit more. The Billfish – Sailfish bite should also still be present from 150-200 ft of water trolling on Pilchards or typically Ballyhoo.

BAIT REPORT – The wind has the inshore bait fairly mixed up this week. There are still expected to be Ballyhoo running for live baiters willing to take on the harsh conditions.

Big Pine/Cudjoe/Sugarloaf Key

INSHORE – There has been a decent Snapper (Snapper, Yellowtail & Snapper, Gray & Snapper, Mutton) bite. They have all been coming up in decent numbers and weights as well. Yellows have been biting frozen Shrimp if they are drifted behind a boat with no weights. Mutton are taking chunks along the bottom. Snappers can be found anywhere from 15-70 ft of water. There are no reports from right on shore at this time.

OFFSHORE – The Billfish – Sailfish bite has been red hot around the reefs. These are located in 150-200 ft of water. Sails are loving live Pilchards or live Ballyhoo and most anglers are trolling for them. They are also trolling for Tuna, Blackfin with sand eel imitations in pink or black. They seem to be having a lot of success with these. There have also been some reports of Wahoo moving in that are sporadic at the moment but expected to increase in the coming weeks.

BAIT REPORT – Ballyhoo are running in the shallow water. Live baiters are chumming and cast netting for them. Live Pilchards are hanging out around the islands or cuts and can be easily caught as well.

Big Pine/Cudjoe/Sugarloaf Key Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – There is a solid Dolphin bite in the deeper water right now. Wahoo are beginning to show up along with some Billfish – Sailfish. The Sailfish are directly off the edge of the reef. Anglers have been drifting live bait at 100ft for these. Sails are loving Pilchards. There have also been reports of a few Permit and Snapper, Gray being hooked. From about 60-90 ft there are some great wrecks to find Snapper (Snapper, Mutton, Snapper, Yellowtail) and Grouper, Gags. A little farther out at 100-200 reports are coming in of Kingfish. Anglers are using frozen whole Pilchards or Cut Ballyhoo and chumming for them. The more chum, the more fish.

BAIT REPORT – Ballyhoo and Pilchards are running in roughly 10-15 ft water. OF NOTE – Check out Lower Keys Tackle every Thursday for a new and informative seminar at 5pm. Call for more details.

Big Pine Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – The wind has pushed a lot of the Gulf stream in close sending Sailfish (Billfish – Sailfish) to the reef at about 150-180 feet of water. Most anglers are excited to be kite fishing for these guys using live bait like Ballyhoo. There have also been reports of Tuna, Blackfin schooled up, and they can be easy to catch using topwater plugs. A mixed back of Bonito, Atlantic and Bonito, Little Tunny have been caught as well and are still biting quite well.

INSHORE – High winds have sent most of the flats guys to the dock. There have surprisingly been Pompano (Pompano, Florida) banging around and they’ve been hitting the live Shrimp, DOA Shrimp or berkley products. Generally inshore fishing has been on the slow side however if you decide to head out this weekend and are looking for some suggestions you can feel free to check out our Tips feature which provides additional information on the fish of your choice.

BAIT REPORT – The Pilchard run has started to pick back up from a slow summer. These are the bait of choice for live baiters. Caught with a cast net, they can last all day in a livewell as they are pretty hard bait.

OF NOTE – Cudjoe Key Fishing Equipment Sales now carries a new line of Blackfin rods locally hand crafted in Florida. Head on in to check them out!

Big Pine Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – 30 knot winds have made fish unavailable for anglers this week. Things have been really slow. We are hoping for things to turn around this weekend but the expectation is for this to happen more realistically next week. Keep an eye out for conditions to lay down and you may have a great chance to sneak in some fishing. We were seeing Sailfish, Dolphin and Wahoo prior to the wind. The Gulf stream is as close as 4 miles off so this will provide great fishing close in once the wind settles. The weeds are pretty stirred up right now so even the anglers out there are having little to no luck. If you decide to brave the weather you can always rely on our Tips section of the app by tapping on the fish of your choice to view suggestions, baits and ‘how to’s.

INSHORE – Nothing really to report here. Blame it on the weather!

BAIT REPORT – Due to the wind we haven’t been seeing any bait.

Big Pine Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – There is a good Dolphin bite out in 600-800 ft. all the way to the wall. Look for birds, look for debris. The Tuna has been patchy out there and so has the Wahoo. Rigged Ballyhoo is still the way to go as far as bait. The 1500-2000ft. depth range has been producing Swordfish during the day. If you don’t want to work them that deep, try fishing under lights at night. The bottom fishing has been doing well on the edge of the reef. There’s Yellowtail, Black Grouper, Red Grouper, and Mutton Snapper. The Mangrove Snapper spawn is basically over so they are a lot more scattered. Live Pinfish, cut Ballyhoo, and Squid are good baits for bottom fishing. Pilchards are also really good if you can catch some inshore.

INSHORE – High tide is bringing with it a good Bonefish bite on the flats that you can’t normally get into with lower water. Shrimp are working well for tailing Bonefish. There’s some Permit in the too. There’s some Tarpon around chasing Glass Minnows and Pilchards. You need to use live bait as they’ve been pretty finicky and are best chased in lower light times of the day.

BAIT REPORT – There’s a lot of Pilchards in the flats and by the grasses.

Big Pine Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – There are Ballyhoo offshore. Anywhere over the reef, you’ll have Ballyhoo. Usually you’ll catch Ballyhoo when you’re chumming for Yellowtail or some other Snapper they’ll be in the chum behind the boat. If you’re good with a castnet you can throw the castnet but, the problem with using a castnet is it will damage their scales. The best way to catch Ballyhoo is to do a sabiki rig without a weight on it and let it drift back into the chum line.

INSHORE – Still catching some Yellowtail and Snapper inshore, and around back the Permit Fish and Bonefish are starting to turn on. As long as the wind stays down. Use Shrimp for Bonefish. Yellowtail the guys are doing normal chumming with chopped up Ballyhoo and having good results. Look between 60 and 80 feet on the outer Reef line or just on outside of the outer reef line at about 80 to 100 ft. At about 200 to 250 ft there are a lot of Skipjack and Blackfin Tuna, and at 700ft plus they are catching schoolie Dolphin. The Blackfin and schoolie Dolphin are biting at the same baits. Troll at a higher speed and bring the internal tackle down just a little bit. Tuna darts work really well and then the Mahi will also take that. With the Mahi, when you get one hooked up, keep it in the rod holder and the whole school will come around you. If you want to you can catch your limit within a few minutes. Keep them fed and they’ll stick around.

BAIT REPORT – Offshore there is some Ballyhoo. The Pilchard have kind of disappeared but they will come back when the water starts to cool down.

Big Pine / Cudjoe / Sugarloaf Key Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – The Dolphin are hot right now in the 350-800 feet of water in the weedlines under the birds. The bite is really quite good which is unusual for this time of year where it slows down a little. The Yellowtail and Grouper are playing in the current just off the edge of the reef, try and catch them in the 60-90 foot range. For the Dolphin you want to be trolling Ballyhoo or black and white lures / skirts. The Yellowtail are really responsive to chum, and the Grouper have an affinity for squid.

INSHORE – In the backcountry there are resident Tarpon around and they are as hungry as ever. The Mangrove Snapper bite has been really good lately, and they love to sink their teeth into live shrimp. The Tarpon prefer to hit crabs. The fishing is going to depend a lot on the tides back there, but Donna at Lower Keys Tackle tells me that the incoming tide is the best.

BAIT REPORT – There is not much bait around, if you do find it by all means catch it, but if you plan on catching your own you could spend a really long time searching.

There is a sale on at Lower Keys Tackle where you can buy one shirt and get one half off either one of the lobster shirts and/or the regular logo shirts.

Big Pine / Cudjoe / Sugarloaf Key Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – The weeds are pretty scattered out there with Dolphin being caught anywhere from 200-1000 feet of water. You’ll really have to look for that debris or piled up weeds and don’t be too concerned with how much water you’re fishing. There’s some Wahoo in the same water. There’s a good nighttime Swordfish bite in about 1000 feet of water. Drifting while longlining big Squid with lights is working best.

INSHORE – Using a knocker rig with a cut Squid or a Pinfish from shore can catch you a wide variety fish right now. There’s Mangrove Snapper and Yellow Jacks in good supply. Barracuda, Sharks, and Jack Crevalles will all hit that rig as well.

BAIT REPORT – Pilchards are starting to show up. The Ballyhoo is pretty thick on the reefs. The backside of the Key is holding Ballyhoo as well. They can be caught using a Sabiki rig or by chumming them up and casting a net to them.

Over the next few months there will be lots of new and exciting products coming to our store.

Big Pine / Cudjoe Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – The main fish you are going to find in the 300-400 depth range is going to be Dolphin and Wahoo. You want to troll for those, but use different lures for what you are targeting. Purple and black is going to be your go to Wahoo lure, but the Dolphin favour blue and white, and pink. However, both of these fish are notorious for changing the depth they are in at a moments notice. The Snapper are biting good right now off of the reefs anywhere from 45-70 feet of water. You want to drop anchor and chum, and they should come right on up. If you want to target the Mahi specifically, you could get lucky closer into shore.

INSHORE – The Permit are running out back, and love to eat crab. The smaller crabs are going to be your best bait for the Permit, but if all you can find is bigger crabs you have two options, chunk them, or go Tarpon fishing. The Tarpon love the bigger crabs and you can definitely catch some. If you want to target the Permit, however, you want to go to the flats out back, keep an eye out, and you will know when you run into them.

BAIT REPORT – Pinfish are always around, and if you set out a trap make sure that you remember to pull it in before you go fishing!

Big Pine / Cudjoe / Sugarloaf Key Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – I spoke to Cameron over at Cudjoe key Fishing Equipment and he told me that not too many people are fin fishing right now. Most people are lobstering. That means for us dedicated anglers there is less competition. Earlier this week Cameron was fishing and heard that the bite is good about 20 miles offshore about 800 feet deep. As usual you are going to want to troll for those with ballyhoo or a blue and white lure. There is also the occasional Sailfish out there. If you plan on bottom fishing off of the reef then you are going to be battling the Mangrove Snapper and Grouper. There is Pinfish on the reef, and if you catch some and drop them straight to the bottom you should be able to solicit a bite or two.

INSHORE – The Tarpon bite has slowed down as the migrating Tarpon have left, and the smarter, scarcer, resident Tarpon are all that is left. Cameron plays basketball with some flats guys and he hasn’t heard too much about Bonefish or Permit, but they have been taking charters out and not only catching, but targeting, Jacks because it is so slow.

BAIT REPORT – There is virtually no inshore bait, and you aren’t going to be able to cast net them if you find any. Most of the bait is on the reef right now. You are going to want to go out at night and chum them up. There are Pilchards, Goggle Eyes, and Blue Runners to be had if you have the time to put in the work.

Big Pine / Cudjoe / Sugarloaf Key Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Overall the offshore fishing is good right now. The Dolphin are the main fish that are being targeted when trolling. They are in the 800-2500 foot range, and there are a lot of scattered weed lines that they like to stick to. Find one of those and troll some bait and you are sure to find one. Remember that Dolphin are social creatures and if you leave one in the water more will come to check on it, which means you can catch another couple. As for bottom fishing, the Mangrove Snapper are the main thing being targeted right now. They are along the reef, and you want to drop cut Thread Herring, Squid, or Shrimp. Yellowtail Tuna are around as well, expect to find them trolling.

INSHORE – Mike over at Cudjoe Key Fishing Equipment Sales has been going after the Bonefish. There are resident Tarpon year round in the keys, but most they are not in full swing anymore. You can find Bonefish every now and again on the flats. Chum with Shrimp and you might hit them.

BAIT REPORT – Pinfish are around right now, and Ballyhoo might show up in a chum slick, but it all depends on where you are and how the bait are feeling. There are no pilchards around right now though.

Cudjoe / Sugarloaf / Big Pine Key Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – There is a good number of Dolphin being caught – not a lot of huge ones, mind you. But go out 600 feet or so and you are bound to find one. Donna over at Reef Light Tackle has been seeing a lot of action around the wrecks. If you want to target the Dolphin specifically, keep in mind that these fish are always moving and good spots for them change on a daily basis. Watch the birds, find offshore bait, or weedlines, or debris and the trolling around there is going to be good. As always you are going to want to troll Ballyhoo for the Dolphin. Keep your eyes open for bottom fishing opportunities as well.

INSHORE – Donna was telling me that the Yellowtail is consistently good around current about 60-90 feet down. If If you are dropping your chum to the bottom, however, don’t expect to catch much. You are going to want to drop your chum into the current for maximum effect. Also, keep your eyes open for the Mangrove Snapepr because they will be spawning on the upcoming moon. Look for them anywhere from 20 feet out to the edge of the reef. There is a fair number of permit being caught too, but the Tarpon have begun to slow down and a lot have migrated. Any Tarpon that you catch from here on out are going to be resident Tarpon.

BAIT REPORT – Bait is moving around between the reefs and backwater; if you find a bunch of bait then keep your eyes open for the Mangrove Snapper – they are following the bait around.

Sugarloaf Key / Cudjoe / Big Pine Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Dolphin and Tuna are biting right now and thankfully the weather has been cooperating. Pretty much all of the summer time species are out there. For the Dolphin you are going to want to troll Ballyhoo and there is a good amount of it our by the reefs in case you want to catch your own.

INSHORE – Permit and Bonefish are the main catches inshore. Try to fish when they are feeding. The bait they are hitting on changes from day to day, but try your luck with Shrimp, Mullet, and Flies. We keep hearing awesome reviews for Vudu Shrimp all over the place – in fact last week our Captains were raving about them. The fishing is pretty similar this week, just get out there and make the most of your time.

BAIT REPORT – Lots of Ballyhoo around, a good number of Mullet too.

Sugarloaf Key / Cudjoe / Big Pine Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Dolphin season is in full swing and are always biting at various depths well off shore while Mahi, Black Fin Tuna, Barracuda and King Mackerel are hitting. An associate of Captain Kyle’s recently returned to port with a nice Blue Marlin this week. Bottom fishing has been outstanding over the past few weeks.

INSHORE – Captain Kyle O’Hearn of Ebb and Flow Charters have been having great success sticking close to port on the Ocean side of Sugar Loaf Key and fishing Tarpon and Bonefish.

Flies and Shrimp as well as Mullet are working well and if you can’t score live shrimp, don’t be afraid to try an artificial presentation. Captain Kyle has had awesome success with the Vudu Shrimp and they have been working just as well as the real thing.

He adds that when approaching a school, let the big alpha fish pass buy and try to target some of those fish that are hanging at the back of the pack. While not always the largest, they are almost always the hungriest of the school.

BAIT – There’s plenty of Mullet fish around.

Cudjoe / Big Pine Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – It is Dolphin season and they are biting well! Troll for Dolphin with Ballyhoo when you can! There are a lot of Schoolies. Big ones are far far far off shore at around 3800 feet. Schoolies that are an edible size are in the 300 foot range. Bottom fishing is also good right now. If you can get yourself to a good wreck, reef, hard bottom or hump you will be in good shape.

INSHORE – Inshore there are a ton of Tarpon. There are also some Snapper, Barracuda and Sharks there. On the flats you’ll find Permit. Depending on what you are going for you’ll want to try to use Shrimp or Squid and a lot of people find that chum helps a lot.

BAIT REPORT –  There are lots of Ballyhoo and Pinfish around which is great for the hot Dolphin bite!
