Atlantic City/Brigantine Fishing Report
INSHORE – The weather has been up and down as of late. The Striper (Bass, Striped) bite has been steady overall with plenty of shorts taking Bloodworms. There are a few around 28-30 inches so there is a chance you can take home some dinner. Conditions are finally shaping up in the river so fish should really be getting ready to bite. Smaller sizes are running the beach and the inlet however the numbers haven’t been spectacular. Tautog are holding up on the jetties. A West wind will settle things down. We expect monster Bluefish to be arriving as they chase the incoming bait any time. Check out the Mullica River fishing trips as well as live bait in store! BAIT REPORT – Herring (Threadfin) are in Great Egg and Mullica Rivers. Bunker (Menhaden) are also moving in.

INSHORE – We are into March now and Stripers (Bass, Striped) have already fired up in the back bay as well as up in the river (Tuckahoe, Great Egg and Middle River). The numbers are improving as they move out of the rivers towards the bridges and bays. Perch (Silver Perch) are in there taking Bloodworms or Grass Shrimp. Most of the Stripers are on the side banks and rivers towards Beesley’s Point. Most are small from 18-24 inches. They are taking Bloodworms and soft plastics. INSHORE – During the Winter season the migratory fish have left the area and the variety of fish available in State waters are slim. Some anglers are still targeting Stripers (Bass, Striped), Tautog, Cod, Atlantic and other fish that are around over the winter. Most Striper trips will start back up around April or sooner. There are still a few of the big boats running Tautog trips when the weather allows. Any of our listed tackle shops would be glad to steer you in the direction of a boat that’s still sailing. As we find varying weather conditions from day to day we encourage all anglers to stay safe and warm when fishing. This is a great opportunity to check out some of the current Pro Angler App features along with new additions coming soon! We look forward to bringing you more great Pro Reports when the bite fires back up!

INSHORE – Tautog are around this week. Generally Green Crabs will do well to hook them. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) continue to be caught. Search wrecks and reefs nearshore to find them. There should still be the odd Striper (Bass, Striped) around. Not a lot of big fish though. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report to reveal more angling tips and tricks!
OFFSHORE – Cod (Cod, Atlantic) have been caught up north off of NY. There’s also some on the 50 mile wrecks off of Seaside.

INSHORE – The focus continues to be the Tautog into this week. We haven’t seen much of a change from last week. They are still swimming farther out from 50 ft and beyond. The sizes are decent with the cooler weather. Bluefin (Tuna, Bluefin) are being seen but not very many are being hooked. The few surf anglers that are left inshore are targeting holdover Bass (Bass, Striped). You will really have to put your time in to find them.
OFFSHORE – The Togging (Tautog) has been pretty good from boats this week. Large sizes are starting to be caught with the colder water. Search 50-70 ft and deeper to find them. There are some reports of Bluefin (Tuna, Bluefin) about 10 miles out recently and other areas to the North have had them moving in. The bite is expected to carry into the New Year.

INSHORE – he Big Stripers (Bass, Striped) are pretty much gone at this point. They have moved to the South or out past the state line. There haven’t been many reports of holdover Bass however we expect that there are still some left. There just aren’t many anglers fishing them. Around this time of year anglers will focus more on the Tautog. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report to reveal more angling tips and tricks!

INSHORE – Anglers are trolling for Stripers (Bass, Striped) into this week. Not too many anglers are fishing the surf at this point. Head out to roughly 3 miles out where depths are around 40 ft. A lot of the better fish are outside of 3 miles. Bunker (Menhaden) are working well to hook them. Mojos and Bunker spoons are your best lures in white or chartreuse. Troll as slow as you can go so they’ll get a good look at the lure before they hit it. Tautog and Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) have been quiet. The occasional Bluefish is still mixed in. Atlantic City/Brigantine Fishing Report
INSHORE – We are seeing a surf and troll bite going well for Striper (Bass, Striped) anglers. There’s some decent fish around the back bay bridges. That said, most of the bigger sizes are out front from Brigantine and down. Trolling with Mojos and stretch 30s has been productive for most boats. White and Chartreuse colors are both working well depending on water clarity. Bigger sizes to 32 oz are working better in deeper water. You can always tandem up with 16s & 8s. Stretch lures have been good in Bunker and Chartreuse colors. Up and down the beach is mainly productive on the troll but anglers are snagging and dropping some Bunker. The fish aren’t very schooled up so this isn’t always productive. On the surf we are seeing fish on the North end of the Island from 5th St North. The jetties there have been fishing well. They are mostly small but keepers can be found on the outgoing tide. SP Minnows are your top producer here in black backed or black/purple at night as well as Bone during the day. The back bays are producing during the outgoing tide around the bridges using SP Minnows, Bomber and soft plastics in white at night or dark around the piers with no light. Pink is working well around the lights. Anything 5-6.5 inches like Zman Zooms is a top producer in the back bays. Small Tautog are also biting in the back bays as the water is still warmer than usual. They are around the bridges with the occasional keeper mixed in. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report to reveal more angling tips and tricks!
OFFSHORE – On the reefs, Tautog are mixed with a bunch of Dogfish. Most of the action is at 8A and Ocean City. You can get in to some big fish on the far out reefs. There are some big fish caught in close though. For depths, after 120 ft we move away from Dogfish (Dogfish, Spiny) and see more Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black).

Atlantic City/Brigantine Fishing Report
INSHORE – The fishing has been great, Bass (Bass, Striped) are plentiful from Brigantine to Surf City. The sizes are good as lots of fish up to 45 inches have been caught. They are biting consistently from sun up to sundown. The bite has heated up progressively into the afternoon for the past few days. The beach and the boats are both doing well. Tautog fishing has been excellent as well. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report to reveal more angling tips and tricks!
OFFSHORE – The few Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) that were last seen were roughly 13 miles East of Asbury. They are hitting on plugs. The fish were plentiful however they don’t seem to bite until evening.

Atlantic City/Brigantine Fishing Report
INSHORE – Heading into Thanksgiving we are starting to see Stripers on the troll of Atlantic City and to the North. Bigger Stripers (Bass, Striped) are up to 45 inches. We hope to see them continue rolling down the coast. There are quite a few fish taken on Mojos or by snagging and dropping as well. They are up to 35 lbs. Bird Play is occurring off the beaches in Ocean City. They are beyond casting range but there are quite a few sightings. With the wind it’s been difficult to get out. Towards the weekend the weather should calm down and we expect the troll bite to improve. Bluefish are swimming to the North pushing down the surf coming South. A Northwest wind can help push the bait to the beach. The night bite in the bay is good along with the day bite on the top of the tide during the outgoing. They are taking soft plastics, zooms and gulp jig heads. Hard baits are hit or miss on the surf. There is still fish on the jetties. Keepers are here and there with a lot of fish being around 25 inches. Tautog are still great if you can get out. Search the inshore wrecks and offshore. Smaller fish are in the bay. Bigger fish are rolling out during the cold stretch. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are out towards the AC Reef and out for the biggest size. INSHORE – We are seeing a fair amount of Stripers (Bass, Striped), especially from the back bay. Spots and Eels are best to hook them. The night bite around the docks and bridges using soft plastics is productive. Bunker, Mullet and Clams will do well to hook them too. Tautog opens November 16 and the reports are great so far. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report to reveal more angling tips and tricks!
OFFSHORE – Anglers were fishing the Canyons recently for the hot Swordfish (Billfish – Swordfish) bite. They are in 300-600 ft and taking whole Squid with glow sticks and rattles at night.

INSHORE – When anglers can get out Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are on the inshore reefs. The closer you are to shore the more Dogfish (Dogfish, Spiny) there are so you have to go out farther. Bluefish are mixed in and are up to 5 lbs. Tog (Tautog) are biting well in the back bays as well as the jetties out front. They are loving Green Crabs. There are still some keepers mixed in with the shorts. Stripers (Bass, Striped) are swimming the jetties on the north end of the island. Early morning sun up and sundown are best using soft plastics, topwater poppers and swimming plugs anywhere from 5th St. North casting up and down the sides of the jetties. The fish are hanging close to the beach. They are in the back bays around the bridges at night, 9th Street especially. During the day they are up in the river taking drifted Eels or Spot in the Harbor or Tuckahoe River. There hasn’t been much in the inlet on the chunk or Eels side. The fish should show up soon. Corson’s Inlet is holding small Weakfish in great numbers taking small plastics, bloodworms and Squid strips with a bit of Clam. Stripers can be caught on the troll out front. They are up to 40 inches taking Mojos.

There are some bigger fish mixed in with quite a few schoolies. They’re not easy but if you hunt for them they’re there. Live Spot and Gulp Nemesis in the shallows has been productive. The water is clean and the Tog (Tautog) are good on the jetties and bridges.

INSHORE – There are plenty of Schoolie Striped Bass in the bay. They are biting all throughout the day with fish landed up to 30 inches. Anglers are drifting flats and casting poppers and structure at sunrise and sunset to hook them. The bite is consistent at night. Bluefish are mixed in. The beach hasn’t quite turned on however there is a lot of good activity from the birds and bait. We expect next month to be hot on the beach. Boaters are doing well trolling Bunker spoons for big fish. Tautog are swimming the inshore jetties but are still small. You can find them in the morning on Green Crabs. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are now open and we hope to see a hot bite on them. Clams will work to hook them, however you can also jig for them. INSHORE – Lots of small Bluefish are showing up in the back bays and also along the beach front. They are mainly 1-3 lbs with bigger sizes mixed in. The main baits are finger Mullet and Mackerel. Some are also being caught on Cast Masters, Deadly Dicks, Crippled Herring and Hopkin Lures. Tog (Tautog) fishing has been great in the back bays around the bridges and jetties. They are also on some of the rock piles and some of the deeper sod banks. Don’t forget to try for Tog around some of the various dock pilings. Green Crabs are the bait of choice. Small schoolie Stripers (Bass, Striped) are showing up in the bay around the bridges and lately we are getting reports of some around the beach front. Atlantic City/Brigantine Fishing Report
INSHORE – Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] fishing in the Beach Haven area has been proving productive for the captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association while offshore fishing has also been attractive. Captain Jimmy Zavacky helped a young family with four youngsters celebrate the end of the school year with a bay fishing trip. The group managed a keeper Weakfish and boated some medium sized Bluefish on the troll. Mate Liane Lopez reported the children were fascinated with all of the living creatures, even the live minnows which they played with all day. It was a fish and fun day for the whole family. Another day the McGee crew tried a little reef fishing and managed some huge Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) which had to be released until they come back in season. Captain Fran Verdi has been finding some nice Fluke fishing the inshore artificial reefs and some of his wreck areas. He had a group of Junior Mates out to catch some fish and learn the basics of proper fishing. Additional Information on the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association can be found at www.BHCFA.net.
OFFSHORE – Captain Dan Skrzat of the Get Reel fished a couple of days recently in 67-degree water in the ocean at the Twenty Line. He released one Brown Shark (Shark, Sandbar) and kept a strong 120-pound Mako Shark (Shark, Shortfin Mako). A third day he had the crew from Jerry’s Diesel in West Creek out fishing the Twenty Line again, this time for Tuna Tuna, Yellowfin). Captain Dan quickly located bait and Tuna. He got his three under Bluefins (Tuna, Bluefin) and released a white marlin. He is pleased to see those fish in close. Later in the day he tried a little sharking but could not raise any.

INSHORE – The back bays are holding some hit and miss Flounder [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] up to 7 lbs. They are all in Ship’s Channel and Summer’s Point. Mackerel and Gulp are what they’re taking. At night the schoolie Bass (Bass, Striped) are showing up in the creeks and docks around the lights. Smaller Bluefish are here and there during the day. In the surf we are finding decent Kings (Kingfish, Northern) on the South end on Bloodworms and Fishbites. Spot have also shown up here along with Weakfish on the same bait. The Wrecks have been holding Flounder up to 4 lbs.
OFFSHORE – Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin) have been picking up a bit but nothing is steady as of yet.
BAIT REPORT – Crabbing is decent this week but they should start to pick up soon. Arlene Mierop weighed in a 21.5 inch Flounder that was 3.3 lbs!

INSHORE – I headed out early this morning with Blake and Max. We headed up the beach and got on the search. We found some life off of Seaside/Ortley and went to work. I managed catching one nice Bass, Striped (pushing 40-lbs) and we also had a couple other missed bites – run offs. Our friend Todd Luber was also out on the water this morning fishing nearby. He released two 30-lb class Bass live lining Bunker.
OFFSHORE – After a long winter of stocking up on tackle at Fisherman’s Hq, long hours of rigging, watching videos and getting amped up for the shark season. It’s finally here. Yesterday we went off about 30 miles and set up around some structure. Not even 10 minutes into setting out the gear out, a Mako (Shark, Shortfin Mako) jumps full on into the air with a cartwheel to boot! One of the coolest things I’ve seen by far. After about a forty minute fight we were able to tail rope him and get it secured along side of the boat. The Mako Shark was about 200-lbs. This trip was a great start to our 2016 offshore season. The Makos are here so get geared up and go. Happy Sharking.

INSHORE – The back bays are holding some decent Flounder [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)]. Rainbow Channel, Ships Channel and Summer’s Point have some great sizes along with Kennedy Park. Bluefish are in the bay, they are slowing down however you can still find some decent sizes from the pier. On the North end a few Bass (Bass, Striped) are being taken in the early morning and early evening on live bait or plugs. Beach activity has been good. A few Kings (Mackerel, King) are starting to appear on Bloodworms on the beach. There are some keepers and they are mixed in with Bass and Blues. Corson’s Inlet is a mixed bag. Bluefish and Stripers are showing up with a couple Flounder, but more are towards the back end.
OFFSHORE – There has been a nice Yellowfin (Tuna, Yellowfin) bite and there are some decent sizes. There are some scattered reports of Bluefin (Tuna, Bluefin) but we are not sure they are consistent yet. Shark (Shark, Blue & Shark, Shortfin Mako) have been providing some great bites for anglers this week as well.

Rainbow Channel is also starting to produce some Flounder as well as the Ninth Street Causeway. Near the Ninth Street Bridge anglers are catching some Bluefish. Bait of choice for the Bluefish is Bunker (Menhaden), Mackerel and Finger Mullet. The Flounder are being caught on Minnows, Squid and Gulp. INSHORE – Not a lot has changed in the area this week. The weather has been hit and miss which has not made fishing easy. Flounder [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] have begun biting. They have not heated up but we expect that to happen soon. Bluefish and Stripers (Bass, Striped) are also still swimming this week. The sizes are great so far. Bluefish are swimming the surf, bridges and the inlet and have been hooked on hard baits as well as Paddlers and jerk Shads on a jighead. Like last week, Bass continue to take Bunker, Finger Mullet and cut Mackerel. Zman lures also continue to hit ’em well. They can be caught in the back bay and the sizes are fantastic.
OFFSHORE – Some anglers are going to try to go Shark (Shark, Shortfin Mako) fishing however this will be the first trip of the season with the cold water and hit and miss weather. We are eager to see how they do.

INSHORE – Flounder [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] season is quickly approaching and opening soon. The weather has been hit and miss but fish are showing up despite this. Lots of big Bluefish up to 15 lbs are making an appearance in the bay more so than the surf. The inlet is also holding them. They are taking Bunker, FInger Mullet and cut Mackerel. Zman Lures have also been productive. Paddlers and Jerk Shads on a jighead which are Bluefish proof in particular are good. The bridges and piers are also holding a few. Hard Baits are working well to hook Bluefish. The water is a bit cooler this year so we expect some great fish to come out of the back bay. Small Stripers (Bass, Striped) are still in the back bay but they are hit or miss. Some are up to high 30s, nothing over 40 yet and a ton of smallies. Bigger sizes are showing up in the rivers. With the water temperature being low they are not pushing out into the surf like they normally would. We hope to see this happen soon.

INSHORE – Blues (Bluefish) moved into the surf pretty well on Saturday, and were bigger than blues from the beach before, Capt. Andy from Riptide Bait & Tackle wrote in a report on the shop’s website that day. A 19-pounder and a couple of 16-pounders were checked-in that day. Heating up like it did last year, he said. Weeds also moved in, but anglers said the water was very fishable. Surf casters did pull a couple of Striped Bass (Bass, Striped) from the surf last night, he wrote in a report today on the site. Keepers but nothing big, he said. A 27-pound Striper is in first place in Riptide’s Spring Striper and Bluefish Derby that lasts until May 22. Third place is still open, and the derby is for the three heaviest fish in both categories caught from the town’s surf. Cash is awarded, and entry is 25 dollars and includes a permit to beach-buggy the entire Brigantine front beach, when accompanied by a Brigantine beach-buggy permit. Without the tournament permit, not all the beach can be driven. New this year, Brigantine beach-buggy permits are free for veterans and active military. The Expert Fireplace Spring Riptide Striper Bounty was up to 640 dollars. The annual contest awards the cash to the angler who brings in the year’s first striper 43 inches or larger from Brigantine’s front-beach. The bounty will grow, because entry is 5 dollars, and all the money is awarded. Berkeley is offering rebates of 15 dollars for buying four packs of Gulps and 10 dollars for buying a pint. Stop by and save, and load up for summer Flounder [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] season that begins May 21.

INSHORE – Things have been great in the area. The Bluefish are big and thick and a lot of them have been over 10 lbs. They are not difficult to catch this week. Reports of small Stripers (Bass, Striped) mixed in with the blues are also being caught. The big sizes are still in the Delaware Bay and the River that have not moved to the area as of yet. The weather has been too unfavorable for anglers to head offshore. The inshore has been the main focus. We expect this bite to continue into the weekend.

INSHORE – Striped Bass (Bass, Striped) and Bluefish are in the surf. There are some in the back bay but the best action is in the sand. Bluefish are taking metals and plugs while the Bass prefer Bass Assassins. The Bluefish are around 8lbs and the Bass are varied in sizes. There are mostly smaller sizes with a few keepers and less monsters.
OFFSHORE – Some anglers are bottom fishing for Tautog and doing very well. They are within 20 miles of the shore. We expect this bite to continue into the weekend.
BAIT REPORT – Bunker (Menhanden) schools are out there but beyond casting lengths. They are schooled up. 10% off line spooling with 3 or more reels at Avalon Hodge Podge!

INSHORE – The weather is hit and miss as of recently. The cold and wind has kept some anglers off the water although the water temperature is warming up. There are some Stripers (Bass, Striped) being caught so far. Most are smaller sizes however there are some keepers mixed in if you are willing to put some time in. Corson’s Inlet, the bridges, the point and the rivers are all holding Stripers. They have not been caught on the surf yet but it is a bit early for that. There are scattered reports of small Bluefish as well. A few Weakfish have been caught but they are not hot yet. Lures are working well and soft plastics such as a Bass Assassin in white colors are also productive. Keep everything toward the surface at this time of year. Black back and Bronze Back are great. There are a few anglers searching for Tog (Tautog) but they are not the focus just yet. There are a few in the bay but the weather is not favorable for them. When the weather is not too bad the Perch (Sand Perch) bite in the river is decent as well. We are just waiting for the nice weather to set in so anglers can hit the water.

INSHORE – Water and weather temperatures are up and down. The recent weather has muddied the water and dropped the temperatures. The back bays are holding some Stripers (Bass, Striped) around the 9th St. bridge. There are not a ton of fish but some keepers. The rivers are holding a lot of shorts along with some Perch (Sand Perch). Anywhere from Jeffer’s Landing to the State Park is producing Perch. The bite from the boat is better so far. Bloodworms and Clams have been the best bait to be throwing this week. We have not had any reports from the surf as of yet but it’s still a bit early for that. We hope to see things continue into the weekend as we look towards the Spring patterns.

INSHORE – Scott’s Bait & Tackle will be open for the fishing season beginning Wednesday. The store’s been closed for a winter break, and Bass, Striped season will be open beginning Tuesday in bays and rivers. But the store is always closed Tuesdays. The annual $100 gift certificate to the store will be awarded to the angler who weighs-in the year’s first keeper Striped Bass from Graveling Point. That’s a nearby shore-angling spot at the confluence of Mullica River and Great Bay that gives up some of the year’s first Stripers each year in New Jersey. The river’s warm water seems to attract them, and some of the year’s first also come from Graveling because that’s simply a place that anglers can access that can harbor the fish this time of year. Bloodworms usually catch them best in the early season, and the worms are already stocked. The worms are easy for the fish to digest when the stripers have slow metabolism in cold water. When waters warm, other baits like clams will catch well. Sometimes the fish were banked early in the season, and sometimes late. That depends on water temperature, and this winter’s been warm. Minnows and nightcrawlers should also be stocked when the shop opens. Scott from the store planned to try to net Grass Shrimp Tuesday to stock live, too. The Shrimp are popular for Surfperch, Sand fishing on brackish rivers like the Mullica, and Maureen heard that the perch were reeled from the river.

INSHORE – Scott’s Bait & Tackle will be opened for the fishing season once striped bass season is opened in bays and rivers, Maureen said. Anglers seemed to be getting excited about the striper opener. The striper season will be opened beginning next week on Tuesday, March 1. The store will probably be opened beginning the next day, March 2, because the shop is always closed on Tuesdays. The shop’s been closed for a winter break. All usual bait will be stocked, including bloodworms, so long as the bait is available from suppliers. The annual $100 gift certificate to Scott’s will be awarded to the angler who checks-in the store’s first keeper striper from Graveling Point. That’s a nearby shore-angling spot at the confluence of Great Bay and Mullica River that’s always one of the first places to give up stripers each year in the state. Warm water from the river seems to make them bite. Bloodworms are the favorite bait for the bass early in the season. The worms are easy for the stripers to digest in cold water. Once water becomes warmer, speeding up metabolism for the fish, clams and other baits begin to catch well. Striper season is open year-round in the ocean, within 3 miles from shore. But practically no stripers swim the ocean off the state this time of year. That’s because the ocean is colder than bays and rivers in winter. Striper fishing is closed beyond 3 miles from shore year-round. The store is accepting rod and reel repairs, and telephone to confirm that someone will be at the shop, before stopping by to drop off the repairs. The crew is at the shop, preparing for the season, on most days.

INSHORE – There are plenty of fish in this area this week however a lot of anglers are staying inside. This means you won’t have to fight for a spot if you hit the water this weekend. Blackfish (Tautog) are catching well this week. Anglers do not have to go far as they are within 5-7 miles of the shore. Blackfish have been mainly holding up on the wrecks so anglers can drop some bait and drag it along the bottom to find them. Stripers (Bass, Striped) are off the charts while jigging and trolling this week. Normally the bite has disappeared at this point but they are still doing extremely well. Bluefin (Tuna, Bluefin) are also turning up this week. They are turning up in huge sizes so far this week and can be found anywhere from 2-10 miles. There’s still good amounts of Sandeels and Bunker showing up so find the bait and you’ll find the Stripers, and maybe even some in tight tuna.
BAIT REPORT – There are still Bunker (Menhaden), Sandeels and Herring in great numbers this week.

INSHORE – There is surprisingly still quite a bit of action from the inshore this week. Stripers (Bass, Striped) can still be found on the troll in front of ocean city. They are hitting Mojos, stretches, Bunker spoons in roughly 40 ft of water. The birds are giving away the spots a little closer to the beach. Some of the Stripers are fairly closer to the top and can be caught on topwater lures. The fish pods as of late are bigger and they are turning up almost 40 inches long. These are similar results to around Thanksgiving. Bluefish are also still swimming. A few Blackfish (Tautog) can be found in the canals however most of the bite is offshore. There is a report of a monster 24 lb Tog coming in by the Rip Tide. They aren’t too far offshore at this point, around the nearshore wrecks however the cooler water is making the catch much bigger. The surf temperatures are a little cooler due to the Northwest wind however warm temperatures are expected to move back in and this pattern should continue for another few weeks.
OFFSHORE – The offshore water is still fairly warm so the bite has not quite turned on. Sea Bass, Black is now closed so Tautog is the main focus. Most of them have not moved too far offshore at this point as the water is still warm but the cooler water is bringing the bigger sizes.

INSHORE – There is a great Striper (Bass, Striped) bite inside the 3 mile mark this week. They continue to the be the target for most anglers. Eels and Bunker are still doing well as bait. The sizes have been best right around 2 miles however with the weather conditions lately they will be a little mixed up and moving. Blackfish (Tautog) are in close this week and although they are not the main target they are doing fairly well. Anglers should stay informed on upcoming species closures in their areas to make sure they are always within legal fishing guidelines.

INSHORE – Everyone has Striper (Bass, Striped) fever. Most people are targeting them and are completely ignoring the other fish. Eels and Bunker (Menhaden) are the best bait for them. They are biting fairly well to the North about 3 miles out around structures. Oceanside is open year round however keep informed about upcoming back bay closures. There are no reports of Bluefish or Tautog so far this week. The temperatures are still warm so the bite is expected to continue into the holiday weekend. INSHORE – The inshore fishing has slowed down a bit this week. There are Stripers (Bass, Striped) still being caught with Mojos on the troll. They are holding up in the back bays and are hitting well during outgoing tide. Bluefish are farther out but still within the 3 mile area in roughly 45 ft of water. The South end of Ocean City and below has been the focus the past few days. The bite has not been red hot but they are there for anglers who put their time in. Most people are waiting for another round of fish to move down from the North.
OFFSHORE – The action has picked up a little bit in the offshore area this week. Sea Bass, Black are biting well in 140 and more feet. The wrecks in this area are key to finding them. Tog (Tautog) are in closer this week. Their sizes are pretty small however there are plenty of them to catch. The sizes are still expected to increase. INSHORE – Fishing has never been better in the area! The Stripers (Bass, Striped) are red hot this week. Anglers don’t have to head more than a mile offshore to find them. They have been turning up just shy of the 50 lb mark. It’s unbelievable. Most boaters are trolling and sometimes jigging them up and they are just about everywhere. From Long beach to Sandy Hook and Seaside it’s tough not to catch on. We suspect the bite is just getting started as well and it will be a late season. There are some fish right off the beach however these sizes aren’t nearly as good or frequent. They are spotty around the jetties too. The bays are holding some Stripers around structures however they are turning up just 20-25 inches, occasionally bigger on soft plastics. Fishing has never been better in this area. Striped bass about a mile offshore. Just shy of 50 odd pounds. Most of them are trolling some on jigs.
OFFSHORE – The Taug (Tautog) bite has been pretty good in this area as of late. A lot of boaters are heading out first thing in the morning to catch the early bite. They have been holding up on the reefs as the water is still fairly warm and they haven’t moved out yet. Most of the other summer fish have moved out at this point and anyone going offshore is targeting the Tog.
BAIT REPORT – There are tons of Bunker (Menhaden) swimming from 25-50 ft with the best bite being in the 35-40 ft area. This location is producing better bait on a daily basis.

INSHORE – There has been a sporadic Blackfish (Tautog) bite just about everywhere in the area this week. It seems that anglers are either catching their limit or very, very few and no in between. Most of them have been fairly good sizes. Anglers have done a lot of jigging to hook them. Green Crabs and White Crabs are still the bait of choice. Blackfish have also been hanging out along the nearshore reefs. There has also been a good Striper (Bass, Striped) bite this week for boats trolling and jigging. Trolling Mojo rigs in chartreuse or white have caught the bigger fish. Bunker spoons are also working very well. The bite should continue into January as long as the weather patterns continue.
BAIT REPORT – So far this week there have been no major reports of bait running. Check out Jersey Hooker Outfitters’ 25 Days of Christmas Sale beginning today, December 1st and running throughout the Holidays. Stock up on some great savings for your favorite angler!

INSHORE – The fishing has not changed a lot in the past few weeks. There are continually lot of Stripers (Bass, Striped) in the back bay and on the outgoing tide using lures, Eels or Live Pinfish. There are lots of fish anywhere from 22-26 inches around the bridges and side banks taking a lot of plastics as well. White and pink have seemed to be the best colors this week using a soft plastic on a jighead. Black is working well at night. The surf has been consistently rough this week, however anglers are still picking up fish around the jetties on lures or even poppers.
OFFSHORE – Now that Blackfish (Tautog) is open anglers are doing fairly well around the nearshore and offshore reefs. There are some Sea Bass, Black hanging around the offshore reefs and wrecks as well. For anglers that decide to head out over the holidays they can always consult our Tips feature which provides additional information and suggestions that might help improve the catch. They can also stop into Fin-atics for a great up to the minute fishing report.
BAIT REPORT – There are plenty of Bunker (Menhaden) running in schools.

INSHORE – The Striper (Bass, Striped) bite has exploded in the back bay where most of the numbers are coming from. Most anglers are throwing jigs, hard plastics or live baits such as Eels or chunk Bunker and Clams. The sizes have been mostly throw backs however there are more to be caught in the surf on live baits. Anglers trolling the ocean are doing very well, not so much in numbers but in sizes. Some have been reported up to 40lbs and growing. Anywhere from 40-60 ft of water is host to some great fish. Blackfish (Tautog) have just opened and are doing well on the wrecks from 2-10 miles out or on land.
BAIT REPORT – Adult and peanut bunker, sand eels and bay anchovies.

INSHORE – Striper (Bass, Striped) season is just beginning as the bite starts to pick up already. There are not very many sizes that are keepers, most are from 10-30 inches however they are progressively getting bigger. The bridges, side banks, and back bays are doing well as the surf begins to pick up. Anglers are using Clams and Menhaden for the bigger sizes, and SP Minnows are working well on the Northern end. Zmans are hooking smaller Bass and live Eels on the side banks. Bluefish are also turning up in the surf and getting bigger everyday. Boats have gone out and caught Bass and Blues underneath. The smaller fish are being caught at night. There has also been a run of False Albacore (Bonito, Little Tunny) in the past week hitting the beach on the South end of the island. Tautog has been caught on Green Crabs around the bridges as well, however anglers should keep in mind they can only take home one.
OFFSHORE – Despite the spotty weather there have been reports of Tuna, Yellowtail running in the Northern canyons. The weather has been too harsh overall for most anglers to get out lately but we hope to see better conditions arrive soon. Seabass, Black is open now and are in about 80-90 ft. of water.
BAIT REPORT – There are currently no bait running to report of this area, however should you decide to venture out you can always check out our Tips feature that provides more tips and information that may help improve your catch. Although a real strong striped bass bite has not yet materialized off Beach Haven, the captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association are being kept busy with other targets as they await the linesiders.
There is a constant stream of baitfish passing by Long Beach Island making their way south. Right on their heels, and often in the midst, is an array of smallish fish feeding on these baitfish. The easiest way to locate these feeding fish is to look for the bird play.
Captain Carl Sheppard of the “Starfish” reports he fished recently with Nicholas Perello, one of the Association’s junior mates, and his dad. Just off the Beach Haven water tower they ran into a school of fish under working birds. They caught unlimited spike weakfish and snapper bluefish casting into the boil. If they retrieved their jigs slowly they caught weakfish while using a faster retrieve produced bluefish. Also appearing at times cutting through the schools of shiners was a school of little tunny. They were up on top pushing water and making white water in their feeding frenzy. Nicholas put a diamond jig right in front of a false albacore which he hooked and played right to the boat. There was also a large bluefin tuna feeding in the bait but showed no interest in their lines.
Thursday, October 22, marked the re-opening of the black sea bass season. Since the season has been closed for several months, the first few weeks should produce some excellent results around inshore wrecks and artificial reefs.
Several of the captains of the BHCFA have received a supply of slot fish tags from the state for their customers to use. They should help in bringing some striper fillets home for dinner. Captain Carl notes he can’t wait for the bass to arrive so he can start to use his tags up.

There have been some striped bass caught in the waters around Beach Haven, but the captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association have been scoring in various ways.
Captain Carl Sheppard had the “Star Fish” out for an afternoon on the bay recently and his crew found some good action on Blowfish while also pulling in some black sea bass, porgies, and even a baby amberjack. Captain Carl attended a meeting with the Coast Guard recently learning about the latest equipment requirements and boarding rules. One of the key new pieces he was advised to consider is to assure the emergency signal of his marine radio is hooked up to our GPS to assist the CG in identifying where we are if an emergency occurs.
Captain John Lewis of the “Insatiable” reports went fishing with Rich Perrelo for tilefish. Captain John said this was his first experience with tilefish and mate Nick was calling the shots. They put 2 pounds of lead on to hold bottom. The fishing started slow but after a few drifts things picked up. They started catching as the wind went up to the point where they could not hold bottom and the bite ended. They ended the day with 9 blue lines and one golden tile.

Strong northeast winds appear to be putting an end to the summer flounder season in Beach Haven. Although the season does not officially close until Sunday, September 26, it will be virtually impossible to get out and fish the inshore reefs where the fish are right now. Further from shore, the offshore tuna bite, especially for large bigeyes, is especially hot when the boats of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association can get out there. Captain Lindsay Fuller took the John Barry party along with regular Ralph Hibbs to the Hudson on Friday for an overnighter on the “June Bug.” They left the dock about 9:45 a.m. and encountered fantastic sea conditions. The weather was sunny and warm with just a little roll in the ocean. They started chunking about 2:30 p.m. very near the 100 Squared in the Hudson. Less than 15 minutes after starting, a fish took a bait close to the boat and took off like a freight train. The fish went through four anglers but after a long fight a 190 bigeye tuna was gaffed and brought into the boat. Later before dark they picked up a pair of longfin tuna in the 35-pound range. Just before dark another large fish screamed line and a 180-pound bigeye went into the fish box. There were bites throughout the night but no more fish were solidly hooked. Captain Lindsay reported he marked a solid mass of bait between 20 and 60 feet down, it seemed unusual not to have more predation of that bait mass. There were easily 100 boats within view. The drift was about 0.7 knots and the water temps were 74.8 for most of the trip. The water was nice and clear. Before the northeast winds arrived, Captain Ray Lopez brought out the Altieri family from Annandale, NJ on the “Miss Liane” to celebrate young Aiden Altieri’s eighth birthday. Fishing several local wrecks, they caught a wide variety of species including non-stop action on fluke and sea bass. Papa Altieri iced a nice sized porgy. It was a fun filled trip for everyone aboard.

Summer flounder on the inshore artificial reef sites and wrecks continue to keep the captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association busy.Captain John Lewis of the “Insatiable” says “We had a great week with lots of fluke.” Captain John says the throwbacks still far outnumber the keepers but they boated fish up to 4 –pounds. He has also been catching banded rudder fish in the bay for some great light tackle action. Most of his recent trips have been families and the kids are having a great time with all of the action. He plans to run deepwater fluke trips until the season closes and then switch over to canyon trips.
Captain George Finck of “Sparetime Charters” also terms his recent fishing as “great” with daily catches of over 60 fish. Captain George had the Kuster family out for a catch of fluke and bluefish as they went home with a few fish dinners.
Captain Ray Lopez had the “Miss Liane” out for a canyon trip with Scott Jones, Michael Miller, and Neal Smover aboard. Although no fish were boated, there were several knockdowns with a wahoo cutting the monofilament leader and a nice tuna breaking off at the boat. On another trip Captain Ray and junior mate Max Goldman had the Mann family out for a bay fishing trip. The action was steady on a wide variety of fish and the weather cooperated to make it a perfect day on the water.

The 2015 Junior Mates class of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association ended its classes with the John Koegler Memorial fishing trip and party following at the Beach Haven Marlin and Tuna Club. BHCFA president, Jimmy Zavacky was quick to praise Barry Baxter from Barry’s Do Me A Flavor for donating food for the party along with the Koegler family for donating prizes for the competing anglers. Eight junior mates weighed in fish ranging from the 12-ounce Boston Mackerel to the 5.48 pound fluke caught by Dylan Fisher.Captain John Lewis reports the “Insatiable” had a great week both fishing parties and with the Junior Mates. Fluke fishing has improved greatly for Captain John in the last ten days bringing a lot of action with double digit releases and keepers up to 25″. His Junior Mate Dylan Fisher won the John Koegler Memorial Junior Mate tournament with a flatty weighing in at 5.48 pounds. His second largest fish was 4.4 pounds. He is also starting to see some keeper sized blowfish in the bay.
Captain Ray Lopez had the Blake family out on the “Miss Liane” for a bay fluke fishing trip. Five year old Eli was the hit of the day when he caught his first three fluke ever. Another trip on the “Miss Liane” saw a group fishing several local reefs looking for big fluke. The group caught an assortment of fish including ling, jumbo sea bass, fluke, and even a squid. All were entertained watching the squid shoot its link while being netted. The group managed to box two 20-inch keeper fluke.
Captain Carl Sheppard had the “Star Fish” out every day for the past week and experienced plenty of rods bending. Leading the charge were large black sea bass which had to all be released since their season is closed. A bachelor party last Saturday proved to be productive as the group caught almost 100 fish including some very large fluke and a nice trigger fish. A large shark also made an appearance, biting through one of the lines.

The boats of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association are experiencing a steady improvement in the local summer flounder action. The inshore wrecks and reefs are providing increased numbers of keeper almost daily.Captain John Lewis reports that his new boat, “Insatiable,” is performing well and was booked solid last week. He is seeing daily improvement in the inshore fluke fishing and was especially impressed with young Max Capatides boating a 23-inch beauty.
Captain George Finck of “Sparetime Charters” has also been finding some nice fluke. He had the Beth Catania family out on the reef fishing, and their day was topped with a 24-inch flattie. Captain Ray Lopez had a group made up of Bob Hass, Miss Fran, and Bill out for a day of fluke fishing on the “Miss Liane.”. Despite catching a wide variety of fish off Island Beach State Park, they were unable to land any keepers. Another day he had father and son Andrew and Maxwell Goldman out to several inshore canyons looking for tuna. Despite a beautiful day and plenty of signs of life, they were unable to hook up. Even the lobster pots seemed devoid of mahi-mahi. Maxwell did land a nice sized bluefish on one of the flat lines.
Captain Jimmy Zavacky had a banner day on the “Reel Determined recently with a total of 10 keepers. Another day his party caught 5 keepers with mackerel strips being the hot bait. On Sunday he had the Cocillano family who fished a half day trip and caught 4 keepers to 25-inches. At one point they landed three keepers within 5 minutes, all on Gulp.
The captains of the BHCFA participated in a memorial event last Sunday at the Little Egg Reef in honor of Captain John Koegler who passed away last winter. Flowers were placed on the water, and Captain John’s family was impressed with the love and respect shown toward John. His name will live on as the Junior Mates annual fishing trip will now be known as the John Koegler Memorial Fishing Tournament.

Atlantic City/Brigantine Fishing Report
Although strong northeast winds made ocean fishing difficult recently, the boats of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association found ways to put fish in the boats.
Captain John Lewis got a late start this fishing season due to purchasing and outfitting his new “Insatiable.” He finally was able to hit the ground running at the end of July and has been busy taking out families with children. His customers have been having a blast with a combination of fluke, sea bass, croakers, blowfish sea robins and the kids’ favorite, sand sharks. An oddity he caught last week was a fluke that was dark on both sides.
Captain Ray Lopez had the Souder party out on the “Miss Liane” for a half day of fluke fishing recently. Rough seas forced them inside to bay fishing where there was non-stop action. Along with the numerous shorts were two nice keepers. The next day the Panus party encountered the same type of rough seas and they also fished inside. The fluke bite was on the slow side but they caught a variety of fish highlighted by young Ryan’s snapper blue.
Captain Carl Sheppard also had to fish the “Star Fish” inside the inlet last weekend thanks to the strong northeast winds. One day they boated over 50 fish without one keeper in the mix. On Monday they got outside with the Callahan and Disco groups where they found a very nice mix of triggerfish and porgies. On Friday Captain Carl had the honor to be selected for a burial at sea of the ashes of both parents of the Schlatterer family. Following the ceremony the group spent time fishing in remembrance of their loved ones.
Captain George Finck reports being very busy over the past week with “Sparetime Charters.” His groups had plenty of action on local reefs and in the inlet catching anywhere from 20-60 fish a trip. They found out of season black sea bass, fluke and sand sharks making up their catch.
Captain Fran Verdi has been fishing the “Francesca Marie” practically every day. He says is he is not happy over the black sea bass closure, and he has been finding up and down results for fluke. He expects the fluke action to hit its peak in late August and September.
Captain Dave Kreines had the Topche family out on the “Byte Me” for a bay trip. They young girls were thrilled with the sand sharks and 6 year old Mica caught a nice keeper fluke but was more excited with his first sea robin. The adults kept busy helping the enthused children.
The Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association will hold a regatta this Sunday, August 16, in memory of Captain John Koegler who passed away last winter. A caravan of boats will leave from Morrison’s Marina in Beach Haven and lay a wreath and flowers in one of John’s favorite fishing spots. Anyone wishing to participate should contact Captain Jimmy Zavacky at reeldetermined@comcast.net

The fishing in Beach Haven has been a mix of types of fish along with sizes including small fish, large fish, and some in between.Captain Jimmy Zavacky has been keeping his boat the “Reel Determined” busy for the past week. He had a group out fishing in the Beach Haven Marlin and Tuna Club’s annual White Marlin Invitational Tournament last weekend. He had one nice white marlin hooked up Friday afternoon but could not get it to the boat. His main excitement came from a 400-pound manta ray with an 8-foot wingspan that was hooked and brought to the boat.
Captain Ray Lopez had local Bob Stewart and Noah and Gabriel, a father and son team, out for a fun filled day of fluke fishing. Cool ocean temperatures slowed the bite at first, but they found warmer water in the inlet. Ten year old Gabriel caught his first keeper fluke.
Captain Bob Gerkens of the “Hot Tuna” reports the bigeye tuna bite is still on. An evening trip to a southern canyon produced three bigeyes ranging from 155 to 200 pounds. The charter was arranged by Nick Garofolo for his sons Nick, Scott, and Trevor. Each got to fight and land their first bigeye under the tutelage of mate Dante Soriente.
Captain Gary Dugan of the “Irish Jig” reports his fluke bite over the past weekend was improving as he was seeing more fish on the ends of the lines. The big fish of the weekend was a 7-pounder caught by Gail Brandli who was fishing with the Beltram party. The only thing holding Captain Gary back at times has been slow drifts.
Captain Carl Sheppard of the “Starfish” and his party had a good time on Sunday when they found themselves in the midst of a school of spinner sharks which were jumping out of the water. The sharks ranged mostly from 3-5 feet in length with a couple a little larger. They had one hooked up and brought it to the side of the boat where they estimated it at 5.5 feet long.
