Description
The Gulf Kingfish is characterized by a larger dorsal fin, elongated body and sloped forehead. Their coloration ranges from silver to grey with a lighter color on their belly. Although they resemble other Kingfish they can be distinguished by their smaller belly scales and darker tail fin.
Habitat & Behaviour
Gulf Kingfish can be found in coastal areas in smaller sized schools usually close up to the surf on beaches. They can also be found near coastal features such as channels, sand bars or inlets.
Natural Prey
The Gulf Kingfish subsists on a diet of shrimp, invertebrates, small fish and other larvae.
Handling Tips
Watch for spines on top. Can otherwise be handled with ease.
