Port Charlotte Fishing Report
INSHORE – The wind has made offshore fishing tough, but when anglers can get out they are finding that the bottom bite hasn’t suffered much. Grouper and Snapper are turning up within 12 miles this week. Rocky structure on the bottom will be your best place to target them using live bait. Keep in mind you may need to take a look at the regulations on your Pro Angler App to determine what you can harvest. Cut live bait will bring the most success. The Kings can be found within 20 miles. Anglers are looking for bait balls on the bottom for the best place to cast their live bait setup. If all else fails, anglers can almost always find Permit swimming around so it’s always a good idea to keep silver dollar sized Blue Crabs on board!

OFFSHORE – It’s been a bit tough to get a handle on the fishing throughout the area this week. With all the recent weather the fish are a bit confused and the bite hasn’t been as easy as we would hope. The ol’ reliables are still hanging around. Redfish continue to bite, but are preferring live bait. Port Charlotte has been a particularly active area, especially throughout the harbor. There is a nice variety of fish throughout the harbor area and anglers aren’t having trouble hooking some of them as bycatches. Snook are hit or miss depending on where you are. Most are over slot and a lot of fun to target, finding them has been the challenge this week. Using live bait in the passes has been productive overall. Fishing as natural presentations as possible has been the best strategy this week. They are already starting to improve as we see more consistent weather. It’s been no surprise that Sheepshead are holding up on structure. Mackerel are beginning to make their way in. Permit are schooled up and spread over several areas, and Tarpon are hiding in some of the rivers. These species haven’t been as hot as we would like to see however we have no doubt they will heat up very soon.

INSHORE – Things are turning on and the fish have shown up. Inside, Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are doing very well. They are in the 17-22 inch range taking jerk baits or live Shrimp under a popping cork. Nice Snook (Snook, Common) to 26 inches are also turning up and they are providing great action for anglers.
OFFSHORE – The reefs are holding nice Vermillion Snapper and Mangroves (Snapper, Gray & Snapper, Vermillion). Great Cobia have also been landed by trolling. They are schooled up and sometimes we will get multiple hits at the same time. Head to roughly 40 feet of water and troll 20 feet down at 4 miles per hour to find them as they make their way back through. Grouper (Grouper, Gag & Grouper, Red) are also swimming the bottom providing a decent catch and release bite. Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) have also been caught in the same 40 foot area.

Port Charlotte Fishing Report
INSHORE – Resident Tarpon are cruising the flats. There has been a few scattered in the 20 Foot Holes throughout the Harbors, as well as PGI Canal and Alligator Creek Reef to name a few of the hot areas Fishin’ Franks provided this week. They are taking a variety of baits from Marco through Venice however the best bite has come out of Port Charlotte.
Along the bushes and oyster bars we are seeing great Redfish and Snook. Moving water is the key to finding them. With the fluctuating temperatures the Reds are preferring live bait such as Pilchards along with a variety of soft plastics. The Snook are becoming a bit lethargic to the North with the drop in temperature however they should heat up well once we see some consistently nice weather.
As usual Sheepshead are holding up on their typical structures taking halved Shrimp on a 4 or 6 hook wit a Split Shot.
OFFSHORE – The offshore has had quite the mixed bag of fish this week. On the bottom, the bite has been successful for those targeting Grouper, Amberjack and Snapper. The Snapper aren’t picky, so don’t worry too much about what you are sending down to them. They seem to be providing a consistent bite no matter what. Grouper are a bit tougher. They are preferring live bait. Amberjack are now closed, but if you are looking for an active catch and release bite then this is your fish.
Closer to the top anglers have spotted Bonito, Blackfin, Spanish and Kings scattered from Marco to Venice. The numbers aren’t outstanding, but they’ll all be a good fish to target if you’re looking for a bit of a challenge.

Port Charlotte Fishing Report
INSHORE – Despite the rough weather there are plenty of areas to fish this week that are producing well. Juvenile and sub adult Tarpon are moving out of the rivers. Snook are still in the river at Fort Myers but most are small with few legal sizes. Further North, Punta Gorda Isle Canals are loaded with juvenile Tarpon and a good variety of Snook. They were beginning to fire up however the recent cold front may have them a bit more scattered and lethargic until favorable conditions return. This week the hottest Snook and Tarpon have turned up out of the Port Charlotte area. Check out the Pro Angler App report for more details.
Redfish are sporadic up and down the coast. Typical areas are holding fish that are taking Sardines or Shrimp. Trout are also hit or miss but prefer a popping cork combo, scented plastic on a jig or can even be caught on the drift. Occasionally you’ll find Jacks or Ladyfish mixed in. They are heating up just in time for the bait run. Mullet, Whitebait, Threadfins and Pinfish are just beginning to make an appearance.
OFFSHORE – The bite has been tough offshore this week as many anglers have had a difficult time finding a weather window to head out. Prior to the front the Snapper, Amberjack, Kings and Tuna were all beginning to heat up and provide steady action for anglers. This week we are seeing a different picture. Snapper are still around however the closer, nearshore bite is a bit more successful. Heading out to 40 to 60 feet using live bait is your best bet. Some are even finding limits of Lanes towards Venice. Grouper and scattered Amberjack have been mixed in and caught while targeting the Snapper.
Kings are a lot closer this week and can be found less than 18 miles out. Spanish Mackerel may be caught as well. We expect the cold weather to have pushed them out by next week.

Port Charlotte Fishing Report
INSHORE – Snook season is underway in the gulf fish of all sizes have been cooperating despite an unseasonal weather pattern. There have been a lot of anglers finding success in the Caloosahatchee River near Fort Myers as well as Bull Bay near Boca Grande. You should be able to get by throwing small Shrimp and bait patterns. Our best report for Redfish came from Fishin Franks in Port Charlotte this week. You can find them swimming the 41 bridge to Eagles Cut. Potholes, Sandbars and cutoffs are fishing well. DOA in white or Shad on a weedless hook is working well to fish them as if you are fishing for Bass. Snook are mixed in. Fishin Franks had a lot to say about the fishing around Port Charlotte and Boca Grande this week, you can view their full report in the Pro Angler App. Your typical fish can almost always be found throughout the area. Sheepshead are thick in Marco, Sanibel and Bonito. Pompano are swimming the outside bars with Cobia and Flounder. Seatrout can be caught around mouths of Cutoffs taking Shrimp while Black Drum are holding up on bridges and structure in the harbor.

OFFSHORE – If you wanted to target fish that can’t be found year round, this is the time to fish Southwest Florida! Good sizes of Kingfish have been caught off of Naples and starting into Sanibel. We expect Sanibel and Port Charlotte to fire up as they have not yet done so. Nearshore wrecks and reefs (30-35 FOW) have been producing Cobia, decent sized Cobia at that. Most anglers have been using artificial Eels on a chartreuse jighead. Moving out to deeper water anglers can expect a reasonable Amberjack bite 5-6 miles from shore.

Port Charlotte Fishing Report
INSHORE – Sheepshead are holding up on docks taking halved Shrimp on split shot rig. Lots of keepers have been caught around Marco. Pompano are steady and varied size, they are taking live Shrimp or Pink Banana jigs. Alternatively orange colors are working particularly well in Marco. They are providing a consistent bite through to Venice. You can also find them in the passes around Sanibel taking Shrimp. Key areas to look have been in roughly 3-4 feet of water on moving tide.
Snook have been caught on Shrimp or larger artificials in Marco. In Gasparilla Sound – Charlotte Harbor, the East and West Wall, PGI and Port Charlotte Canals are also producing.
Trout are on grass flats taking Shrimp under a cork or bounced on bottom. The key is finding clean water. In Port Charlotte they are outside the bars in 3-5 ft on both the East and West wall. Trout have been caught through to Venice.
Scattered Tarpon are in the pass. You can also find them in Bull Bay reaching 120 pounds. Search the deep holes to find them.
Spanish Mackerel have been caught taking jigs in both Sanibel & Port Charlotte. Anywhere you fish in Southwest Florida, you will find a scattered Redfish bite.

OFFSHORE – There has been some Amberjack, Kings and Blackfin Tuna caught offshore this week. King Mackerel have been biting on the troll this week from Marco almost all the way to Venice. A lot of boats have had good luck pulling Bluerunners up to 20 miles out, just keep an eye out for birds and bait. Keeper Grouper have been consistent in 45 to 60 ft of water from Sanibel up to Boca Grande and again to Sarasota on cut Herring. Snapper have put on a decent show. They have been taking a variety of baits this week including Shrimp, cut Herring, Squid, Pilchards or Finger mullet. Range wise, you’ll want to start at 7 miles out 15 miles. If you’d prefer to fish in closer on account of the seas, or you like Sheepshead, well, there’s Sheepshead on a lot of the nearshore wrecks and reefs. They taste great and are usually pretty forgiving in regards to your presentation. Just drop some small Shrimp or Fiddler Crab to the bottom and they shouldn’t have a problem biting.

Port Charlotte Fishing Report
INSHORE – It’s definitely a Snook’s time to shine this week. They are waking up inshore from Marco Island to Port Charlotte and they are hungry! With the Whitebait running they are on the move and in search of some live Shrimp on a hook! They seem to be just about anywhere from islands to channels to canals. It has been difficult not to run into them. Trout are also consistent into this week. They are swimming their typical Spring patterns already and are also loving live bait. The sizes have been great so far. Focus on the shallower water for the best bites!
Structure is holding a variety of species to be caught. Mangrove Snapper, Sheepshead and Jack Crevalle are mixed throughout the inshore water. The sizes are nothing great quite yet however we expect them to provide some great action for anglers in the coming weeks.
If all else fails you can always find a few Redfish inshore. This week they are preferring artificial swim baits and MirrOdines. Scattered Black Drum can be found alongside, especially in the Boca Grande and Port Charlotte area. Towards Venice a handful of Pompano and Spanish Mackerel are moving in.

OFFSHORE – Offshore fishing has proved a bit tough for anglers this week. Scattered Tripletail are beginning to show up. Live bait is your best bet to hit them. We expect the bite to heat up in the next few weeks.
The bottom bite is still consistent despite weather conditions. Mangrove Snapper and Greater Amberjack can be found on reefs along with a few Gag Grouper. The Amberjack are the most consistent catch. Everything seems to be nearshore with an extremely quiet offshore bite.

Port Charlotte Fishing Report
INSHORE – Marco Island and Naples have had a good showing of Pompano in the passes and channels. The grass flats have been producing Trout. Redfish have been caught around the bushes just off of deeper water.
From Naples up to Estero Bay inshore and nearshore structures are producing a decent Sheepshead bite. The Sheepshead haven’t been too picky about time of day as long as you put some bait in front of them. Up into Sanibel the Sheepshead continue to bite well on bridges and pilings. Mangrove Snapper and Sheepshead have also been caught in the passes. If you are looking to target big Snook you can head up the Caloosahatchee River. Try throwing big swimbaits or Mullet.
There is still an abundance of juvenile Tarpon in the region. The best spots are PGI canal and the Caloosahatchee River. Boca Grande Pass, Captiva Pass and surrounding beaches have been good for anyone wishing to catch Whiting or Pompano.
OFFSHORE – The artificial reefs in Southwest Florida have been fishing well for Cobia anglers. The Cobia haven’t been locked down to a specific depth, although you’ll want to start in at least 30 feet of water for some better sizes. From Sanibel to Venice, the most productive artificials seem to be anything eel like by the Hogy Lure company.
Big Gray Snapper, aka Mangrove Snapper, have been hauled off of nearshore reefs from Sanibel up to Boca Grande. Amberjack, Amberjack, Amberjack! Everyone is fired up as these prized bottom fish are being caught throughout Southwest Florida on artificial reefs and wrecks from 40-80 ft of water. The bigger boats have been finding big Ajs past 80 ft although this is mostly to the North of Port Charlotte. There has also been good Red Grouper fishing about 25 miles off of Venice. You’ll also get into some Lane Snappers and catch and release Red Snappers there too.
For anyone wanting to get out and target Permit, boats heading out of Boca Grande have been getting some decent fish in 50 ft of water.

Port Charlotte Fishing Report
INSHORE – It’s been a good week with a nice variety of fish. In the upper harbor around I 75 into the Peace river there are still Whiting hanging around. The bite on them isn’t bad. A lot of Snook (Snook, Common) have moved back up around the docks and mangroves. In Shell Creek between the railroad trestle and the damn there has been a lot of Snook and a few Redfish (Drum, Red). Tarpon of assorted size from 20-120 lbs have been hooked as well. Towards Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda, the Jacks are killer at the mouths of the canals. Small Snook and juvenile Tarpon are showing up. On the Punta Gorda side, the Black Drum (Drum, Black) are doing well. The Sheepshead have begun to move into the mouths of the canals with a few smaller Trout. Mangrove Snapper are moving into the mouths too. All the mouths of the canals on the Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda side are seeing a nice array of fish. The West wall is slow due to the wind from the East tearing up the shoreline. The East side is calmer so anglers are catching rat Reds with a couple bigger fish. Some are on the flats and some are under the bushes so you need to cover water. We have April fishing conditions in February so the fish don’t know where to stage and they are all over the place. We are seeing a similar bite in Bull and Turtle Bay. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted), Sharks (Shark, Bonnethead), Sheepshead and Mangroves (Snapper, Gray) are being caught here too. In the open harbor and the outside edges of the bar in front of Bull and Turtle Bay we are seeing Bluefish to 5 lbs. These are great sized Bluefish for the area. Bonnetheads and Trout are mixed in also. We are seeing a few Pompano (Pompano, Florida) that are on the edges of the bar as well, however most anglers aren’t targeting them. In Pine Island Sound the bite is the same. Fish the island and deeper cuts to find the Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Redfish (Drum, Red). Bonnetheads are scattered throughout. The sand holes in the open flats are holding Bluefish and Pompano. The occasional Blacktip and Blacknose (Shark, Blacktip & Shark, Blacknose) shark has shown up. Whiting are hot at Boca Grande and Captiva Pass. Sheepshead and Snapper are picking up in the same area. A fair number of Snook (Snook, Common) are still swimming with the warm Winter. They seem to bite in spurts. Scattered in the harbor on Alligator Creek and Cape Hayes Reef we are seeing smaller Cobia. There are a few decent sizes mixed in. They are up to 41 inches which is great for this time of year. Keep an eye out for details on the March Tent Sale at Fishin’ Frank’s Bait and Tackle! PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish listed below the report for more angling tips and tricks!
OFFSHORE – The Lane Snapper (Snapper, Lane) bite is insane from 40-50 ft of water. They are up to 3 lbs and are loving Shrimp. Mangroves (Snapper, Gray), Porgy, Sheepshead and Grunts (Grunt, White) are mixed in on hard bottoms or artificial reefs. Chum heavy over the artificial reefs, especially when there are other boats around. Cobia are on those reefs as well. A lot of anglers on Power Pole, Mary’s and Helen’s Reef are seeing fair numbers of Permit that are up to 25 lbs. Grouper (Grouper, Gag) and Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater) are still 35 miles out to find any size to them. 75-90 ft are key depths to look for. From Captiva to the Captiva Blue Hole, Pegasus and Mohawk Reefs are producing action along with just Northwest of the area towards Venice. Some of these reefs are less pressured. It’s been a great week for a nice mix of fish. There are tons of options if you are ready to be patient.

Port Charlotte Fishing Report
INSHORE – With the recent cold front some of the fish have begun to move from I75 to the upper Peace River but you’ll have to work your setup slow in the deeper cuts or pinch points where you have deeper, moving water. We are seeing mostly undersized or just slot sized Reds (Drum, Red). Plenty of catch and release Snook are mixed with Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Whiting (Kingfish, Southern) closer to I 75. From 41 Bridge, Punta Gorda Isle and Port Charlotte Canals we are seeing Jacks, Trout, oddball Redfish and Sheepshead around the mouths. Drum (Drum, Black) are moving around as well. Juvenile Tarpon are still being caught as well. As you work your way farther down to the East side we are seeing a more productive bite. In the morning the Trout are on the outside edge of the bar in 3-5 ft. As the day warms up the Trout are moving to the flats in 2-3 ft of water. It’s a Shrimp bite more than anything else on a jig or split shot worked on the bottom very slowly. Soft plastics are working on a jighead slowly hopped on the bottom. Redfish are scattered up and down the East side but you’ll work hard for the bite as they are all over the place. Some of the creeks are holding small sizes but not many legal sizes. Similar bites are in Turtle Bay and Bull Bay for the Trout. Redfish and Snook (Snook, Common) are scattered there as well. There are more Sheepshead scattered on the flats and fish shacks. Pompano (Pompano, Florida) have been caught as bycatches. Along the ICW from the North end of Pine Island to Lemon Bay the bushes and flats behind Boca Grande is producing better activity for Redfish, bigger Trout, Sheepshead and Mangrove (Snapper, Gray) moving into the sand holes and troughs. Around all the docks we are seeing an active bite of mixed fish with the recent cold front. Along the hospital and in the canals we are seeing a nice variety. A few Bonnetheads (Shark, Bonnethead) are swimming but they are lethargic. Blacktips and Spinners (Shark, Blacktip & Shark, Spinner) are moving up the intracoastal. You can target them but they are fairly scattered. They are better quality when you can catch them. We expect great conditions into the weekend. Keep an eye out for details on the March Tent Sale at Fishin’ Frank’s Bait and Tackle! PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish listed below the report for more angling tips and tricks!
OFFSHORE – It had been a bit rough out there earlier in the week. Anglers are fishing for Mangroves and Lanes (Snapper, Gray & Snapper, Lane) from 3-5 miles. A good number of them are up to 5 lbs. Yellowtail (Snapper, Yellowtail) are around 12 miles with fish up to 3 lbs being common. Tons of Bonito (Bontio, Little Tunny) are still swimming. There are a lot of reports towards Sanibel of mixed Bonito and Blackfin from 3-10 miles out. Grouper and Ajs are better at 35 miles in that area. Goliath (Grouper, Goliath) have moved to the nearshore and farther out reefs. There are some Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater) and Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) mixed in on the reefs that are heavy with Goliaths.
BAIT REPORT – Squirrelfish and Pinfish are on the nearshore wrecks. Small Sardines are in 30-35 ft of water. You can sabiki them since they are small and difficult to net. Plenty of Glass Minnows have been reported as well.

Port Charlotte Fishing Report
INSHORE – The safe bet this weekend will be staying inshore with the expected weather coming up. We are seeing a nice mix of fish inshore. On the upper end of the harbor from 41 Bridge into Peace River past I75 we are seeing a mixture of a few Whiting (Kingfish, Southern). Redfish (Drum, Red) are on the upper Peace River towards Shell creek. The numbers are consistent but the sizes are better in the upper slot limit. Snook (Snook, Common) and Tarpon are around in assorted sizes. Black Drum (Drum, Black) are mixed in from 20-50 lbs. The bigger sizes are usually in PGI however they are still in this area now. The mouths at the beginning of the harbor around Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda are holding Trout (Seatrout, Spotted), large Jacks (Jack, Crevalle) up to 10 lbs along with a few oddball Redfish. Lots of juvenile Tarpon are swimming both sides of the canal but you will have to go farther up to find them. The PGI is also holding better Tarpon and Black Drum farther up. We are also seeing mixed reports of bigger Mangrove Snapper (Snapper, Gray) and Sheepshead. While it’s been calm, the Alligator Creek reef has been hot. The Sheepshead are definitely on but you will have to move around to find them from pile to pile. Mangrove Snapper and Spadefish are bycatches. Short Cobia have been caught as well. The main bite in the harbor from North of Pirate Harbor to Burnt Store we are seeing Trout, peppered Redfish, Snook and Bonnethead (Shark, Bonnethead). Work Shrimp on a jighead lightly bouncing it along the bottom in 2-5 ft of water. Trout are in 3-5ft while Reds and Snook are shallower in 2-3 ft. Turtle and Bull Bay are doing well for the same fish. Pine Island Sound to Lemon bay are about the same, work things slow for the Trout. Redfish are in the bushes and shallower sand holes with close access to deep water. The water is cloudy with the recent wind. This is expected to remain with the upcoming system. Keep an eye out for details on the March Tent Sale at Fishin’ Frank’s Bait and Tackle! PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish listed below the report for more angling tips and tricks!
OFFSHORE – The offshore bite has been great however no one has been running offshore as the conditions are too unfavorable. Buoys were recording 8-10 ft waves and surfers are taking advantage. We hope anglers will stay safely inshore until conditions have improved. We expect more Bonito (Bonito, Little Tunny) in close. They are almost in the pass. They are up to 5 lbs however the numbers are great. Bluefish are mixed in up to 3 lbs. Glass minnows had pushed in as well. Good sizes of Mangroves, Lanes (Snapper, Gray & Snapper, Lane), Sheepshead and Porgy (Scup) are within 7-12 miles. There are still no Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) to be caught as of yet.
BAIT REPORT – Glass Minnows have been pushed into the pass with the recent weather.

Port Charlotte Fishing Report
INSHORE – There is a bit of activity in the Upper Peace River from I 75 up to Shell Creek and Navigator. Whiting (Kingfish, Southern) are showing up with more and more Redfish (Drum, Red) cruising around. Peanut Snook (Snook, Common) are being reported for catch and release anglers. Juvenile Tarpon are around with a few nice sized fish to 80 lbs. Some anglers fishing the farther back creeks are finding Tilapia. The Pina Gorda Isle Canals are holding Black Drum (Drum, Black) and juvenile Tarpon. Mangroves and Sheepshead are picking up in the Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda Canals. They are up to 18 inches. They are chewing well on Shrimp with the recent full moon. The bigger Mangroves (Snapper, Gray) are taking frozen whitebait. Freeline with a small split shot and drift it down as naturally as possible. The East side of the harbor is one of the most active areas. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are caught in up to 5 ft of water. The quality of Trout has increased with the temperature change. The Redfish are about the same. You can find them in the sand holes or around the edges of the mangrove shoreline closer to the deep water. They are loving Shrimp this week. Palm sized shrimp to 4 inches are best. Sheepshead are picking up in Alligator Creek Reef, the Cape Hayes Reef along with the East and West side. Spanish Mackerel (Mackerel, Spanish) are slow up and down the coast. Normally they are great in the harbor and around the Skyway bridge. Bluefish are on fire in terms of size. They are up to 5 lbs. Pine Island is doing great for bigger Trout in 3-5 ft of water near deeper sand holes and troughs. Around Yooseppa towards Captiva Rocks we are seeing fish up to 24 inches. Drag a Shrimp in slow on a jighead. Pinfish are working as well. Good Blacktip (Shark, Blacktip) have been caught. There may even be some Spinners (Shark, Spinner) around. They are nicer fish to 5 ft. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish listed below the report for more angling tips and tricks!
OFFSHORE – The Boca Grande Pass is holding Bonito (Bonito, Little Tunny) to 5 lbs inside the pass. They are a fun catch. Bonito are schooled out to 18 miles. You can see them hitting the surface, there aren’t that many birds on them. A few Blackfin (Tuna, Blackfin) are mixed in. From 3-18 miles the Snapper (Snapper, Gray & Snapper, Lane), Grunt (Grunt, White) and a few Sheepshead are hitting well. Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater) and Grouper (Grouper, Red & Grouper, Gag) are 30 miles out or better. Gags are providing a good bite inside 15 miles for catch and release anglers. A few more Cobia and Permit have been caught closer in on the reefs. Tripletail are scattered from Captiva to Venice on the crab buoys. There aren’t a lot of them but they are from 6-10 lbs so far.

Port Charlotte Fishing Report
INSHORE – The upper harbor is off and on this week. The middle to lower harbor is holding Redfish (Drum, Red), Trout (Seatrout, Spotted), catch and release Snook (Snook, Common) and Bonnetheads (Shark, Bonnethead) on the East and West walls. Juvenile Tarpon and Drum (Drum, Black) are in the Punta Gorda Island and the canals. There are some in the Port Charlotte Canals. This weekend’s cold snap should improve the bite. It will bring fish up to this area where they should be this time of year. The Redfish are getting smaller and smaller so finding legal sizes is tricky. There are a lot of Rat Reds being caught. With the high salinity and water temperature, the Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) are surprisingly still in the passes and off the beaches. They haven’t moved into the harbor. This may have been due to the Red Tide that was in the area. Sheepshead are doing well along the intracoastal in Turtle Bay, Bull Bay, the backside of Boca Grande and into Lemon Bay. OFFSHORE – The weather has been nice so most anglers were running offshore this week. From the passes out to 15 miles we are seeing Snapper (Snapper, Gray), Grunts and Porgy. Spanish, small Kings (Mackerel, Spanish & Mackerel, King) and even a few Cobia and Tripletail are biting around the crab traps and bait balls. From 25-30 miles we are seeing Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater) and Grouper (Grouper, Red). Bigger Blacktip and Spinner Sharks (Shark, Blacktip & Shark, Spinner) have been reported to 6 ft from 15 miles out. Bonito (Bonito, Little Tunny) are schooling from 25ft deep and out to 35 miles out. Blackfin (Tuna, Blackfin) are underneath of them. BAIT REPORT – There’s lots of fry in the harbor but not a lot of other bait has been found. Port Charlotte Fishing Report
INSHORE – For Fort Myers, Pine Island, Boca Grande and Port Charlotte – Things are picking up from I75 to Shell Creek Dam. The Dam area is good for catch and release snook, some legal Redfish (Drum, Red) and a handful of Tarpon up to 100 lbs. Black Drum (Drum, Black) and baby Redfish are around the I75 Bridge. A few reports of Whiting (Kingfish, Southern) have moved in too. PGI Canal fishing is hot around the mouths with the warm weather. Big Jacks (Jack, Crevalle) to 15 lbs are turning up with legal Redfish. Eating sized Black Drum to 40 lbs have also been caught. Mangroves (Snapper, Gray) are spotty in the Canal with Sheepshead. Moving down the East and West Wall they are hot and cold from day to day. Redfish are under the bushes and around the mouths of the creeks and even on the flats. They are up to 24 inches. In the creeks we are seeing tons of small sizes. Peanut Snook (Snook, Common) are everywhere. Pompano (Pompano, Florida) are scattered on the East and West side on the bar and the outer edge of the bar. Bonnetheads (Shark, Bonnethead) are swimming the flats and the center hole. Quite a few straggler Tarpon are still scattered in the holes, pass and just off the reefs. The upcoming front shouldn’t change much this week. It may slow things down a bit for a day or two. It should be close to normal for the new year. The beaches are seeing good Sheepshead around the passes. Nice sized Whiting have been caught too. Flounder (Flounder, Southern) seem to come in waves. You can find Bull Reds at night around the passes. Blacktips and Bull Sharks (Shark, Blacktip & Shark, Bull) have moved through at night. They are up to 5 ft. A few oddball Pompano and Jacks (Jack, Crevalle) are moving as well. Spanish seem to have disappeared. They are out in the center of the passes about a half mile out and farther. Trout activity has been slow in general. Most are small and peppered all over. Around Ft. Myers the fish are towards Matlacha, Pine Island and Sanibel this week. There hasn’t been much locally out of Fort Myers. Normally the 41 Bridge to I75 around the Power Plant in Caloosahatchee we see Snook (Snook, Common), Tarpon and Redfish (Drum, Red) will stack around it with the warm water discharge. With the warm weather they are still on the outside. OFFSHORE – The weather has been beautiful this week. We are seeing fantastic skies and calm waters. Plenty of anglers headed offshore to take advantage. The Blackfin (Tuna, Blackfin) are on fire in 35-40 ft of water. Slow troll around the outside edge of the reef using spoons and small lipped plugs. Birds and bait are key on the surface. Look for Bonito (Bonito, Little Tunny) and cast jigs to hook them as well. Kings (Mackerel, King), Cobia and Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) are doing well about 20-35 miles out. They are smaller in close and a bit more scattered. Grunts (Grunt, White), Porgy (Jolthead) and Snapper (Snapper, Lane & Snapper, Mangrove) are hot from 10-18 miles. Gags (Grouper, Gag) are closing Sunday so anglers are taking advantage in 70-90 ft. They are mixed with Red Grouper (Grouper, Red). Fishin Franks Bait and Tackle 941-625-3888 www.fishinfranks.comDecember 22, 2016

INSHORE – Anglers are doing better into this week. In the upper Peace River form 41 Bridge to the County line we are seeing a few more decent sized Redfish (Drum, Red), juvenile Tarpon and some Snook (Snook, Common). Whiting (Kingfish, Southern) are just beginning to move up here. In the immediate area around Punta Gorda Isles Canal and Port Charlotte Canal we are seeing monster Jacks (Jack, Crevalle), Black Drum (Drum, Black) and juvenile Tarpon. The little Croaker (Croaker, Atlantic) are hanging around. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) haven’t really moved in yet. They are still on the lower East side in Bull Bay, Turtle Bay and the ICW. There have been a few Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) and decent sized Bluefish to 6 lbs. Resident Tarpon are moving around and a couple up to 120 lbs have been caught. They are in the lower harbor and Pine Island Sound mixed with shallow Grouper (Grouper, Gag). A few Tarpon are in Boca Grande Pass. They are also on Mary’s and Helen’s Reef within 3 miles of shore. The water temperature is up so the Tarpon are loving it. Bonnethead Sharks (Shark, Bonnethead) are in Turtle Bay and the ICW. They can be a lot of fun for the whole family to get out and catch big fish. Fishin Franks is open Christmas day from 8am-2pm! Stop in, say hi, and stock up! INSHORE – Despite the upcoming cold snap, the temperatures are expected to warm back up. We will see the heaviest impact on the Mullet run. The Red Tide is still affecting the area. It is in patches throughout the Harbor, Panagoda Isle Canal, 41 and I 75 and a few patches by the Mayaka. If you are willing to move around you will find some fish. Bloated dead fish aren’t necessarily an indicator of red tide, they could have blown in from elsewhere. There’s a good chance there will be some fish under them that are very much alive and willing to take bait. The East and West side are doing well for Redfish (Drum, Red), Snook (Snook, Common) and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted), you just have to be prepared to move a lot. There has been some Red Tide by St. James City in Pine Island as well. A few patches are also around the Intracoastal and towards Venice. An East wind and a bit of rain will move some of the Red Tide out. Out of Boca Pass the Sheepshead are starting to move in. Spanish and Kings (Mackerel, Spanish & Mackerel, King) are moving in and out of the Channel. Mangrove Snapper (Snapper, Gray) are already there. An East wind and a bit of rain will move some of the Red Tide out. Stop in and check out the great products in Fishin’ Franks Bait & Tackle just in time for the holiday season! OFFSHORE – The bite is incredible in 60-80 ft of water for Red Grouper, Gag Grouper (Grouper, Gag & Grouper, Red), King Mackerel (Mackerel, King) and Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish). Grunts (Grunt, White), Mangroves and Lanes (Snapper, Lane & Snapper, Gray) can also be caught. A few sporadic Blackfin (Tuna, Blackfin) are here and there for anglers flatlining and chumming. We expect some bumpy water for the weekend with the upcoming front. BAIT REPORT – Despite the upcoming cold snap the temperatures are expected to warm back up for the weekend. INSHORE – Snapper (Snapper, Gray) and Sheepshead have picked up this week. They are on structure or bridges. Snook (Snook, Common) are still good on structure and the bridges on the outgoing tide in the evening. Red Tide is at the West Wall Corner in Cape Hayes Point to Pirate Harbor so things are slim in that area. There is negative tide and a low water river. This may be helping the red tide to come in. North Wind or a good slam of Freshwater will push it out. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish listed below the report for more angling tips and tricks! Port Charlotte Fishing Report
INSHORE – Around Pine Island we are seeing a few patches of Red Tide. Matlacha has had a heavier bloom. Pine Island sound from Boca down is fishing well. The Redfish (Drum, Red), Snook and Trout have been unbelievable around Rat Key, Cat Key and Captiva Rocks. On the inside of Captiva Pass there are some good Pompano (Pompano, Florida) on the North end and the South side of the channel. Big Whiting (Kingfish, Southern) are at the edge of the pass. A few Gags (Grouper, Gag) have been caught as well with a few being legal sizes. Spanish are moving in and out of the whole intracoastal. The fishing is a mirror image at Boca Grande although we are seeing a few more Sheepshead in the channel along with some Kings (Mackerel, King) a few hundred yards outside the pass and the channel. Troll a 15 or 16 series Bomber about 6 feet down to hit them. The cold snap brought them down. Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) are making it inside the harbor. With the bait kill, the Kings aren’t following the bait in. In Turtle Bay and the West wall we are seeing a good bite. Redfish and Snook are along the bushes. On the West wall there is Trout, Pompano as well as Bonnethead Sharks, Turtle bay is similar. Reds and Snook (Snook, Common) are along the bushes with tons of Trout scattered on the deep flats with the occasional Redfish. A good amount of Pompano are swimming the Cape Hayes Bar with Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Spanish. A few Flounder have turned up incidentally. They are moving in as the temperature drops. Cobia are showing up inside the harbor and most are on the smaller size, but some are up to 38 inches. They are being caught while anglers are trolling for Spanish or anchored on the reef. Canals in Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda are beginning to light up. The water is super clear. Snook are moving in, mostly small. Slow troll the canal for them. Black Drum (Drum, Black) are hot in the PGI canals. They are big. The smaller sizes are in the Port Charlotte Canal up to 10 lbs. There hasn’t been much on juvenile Tarpon this week. INSHORE – There was a little patch of Red Tide moving inside Pirate Harbor down to Two Pines. It seems to have moved out now and luckily it wasn’t a super strong bloom. All the flats were holding dead baitfish, Trout (Seatrout, Spotted), Tarpon, Snook (Snook, Common) and Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish). It was in and out pretty quickly. The wind and high Supermoon Tides cleared it out. The West wall has been good for some amazing Redfish and Snook. Most Snook are undersized. Scattered Reds are along the bushes. On the flats, schools of Redfish are following Mullet pods. In Turtle Bay and Bull Bay we are seeing Redfish, Trout and Snook scattered about. Along the ICW to the North End of Pine Island we are seeing Spanish right at the top. Kings (Mackerel, King) and Gags (Grouper, Gag) were caught trolling on the way out. The canals will begin to cool off with the upcoming cold front. Snapper (Snapper, Gray) are moving in with the Snook. They are slow at this point. Juvenile Tarpon are around as per usual. Drum (Drum, Black) have thinned out in Punta Gorda Isles but the ones that are still there are around 40 lbs. Check out Fishin’ Frank’s Bait and Tackle at the Fort Myers Boat Show! African Pomps (Pompano, African) have also been caught with tons of Bonito. Cudas (Barracuda, Great) have invaded the area as they leave the nearshore wrecks for the 90 ft mark. Kings are right up to Venice along the beaches with a few Cobia. There have been a couple oddball Tripletail but they aren’t where they should be at this time. Search the Crab Trap markers for them. INSHORE – Redfish (Drum, Red) are on fire! They are great sizes as well. The smaller fish have been 23 inches. They are right around the intracoastal and the North end of Pine Island around the shoals. Heading North to Bull Bay we are seeing Redfish scattered here as well. They are schooled up from Widden Bay to Turtle Bay both inside and outside. Peppered Snook (Snook, Common) of various sizes are mixed in as they move to the backcountry. As you move to the harbor you see the East and West side getting more fish moving farther North. The East side is a bit more consistent. The West is getting better along the whole wall. Pinfish and Shrimp are your two best bets however Threadfins and small Whitebait moved in from offshore to the harbor. You can throw this as well for the smaller Snook. Around Widden Bay and Sand Fly there is some Red Tide. It’s weak but it could kill your bait. Pompano (Pompano, Florida) are cruising the beaches from Englewood to Boca Grande Pass. Pompano are moving inside the harbor however most of it is in Cape Hayes, Burnt Store Bar and the East Wall. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are small and everywhere. Bigger sizes are scattered from Pine Island to Lemon bay. They have been caught on the drift. Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) are coming inside as they follow the bait through the center of the harbor. Look from Cape Hayes to Marker 6 around Burnt Store. The lower center harbor is best. Small Kings (Mackerel, King) are mixed in. Juvenile Tarpon are still in the canals. The water is extremely clear. Snook are biting at night as they move into the canals with the Tarpon and Black Drum (Drum, Black). There are a few reports of incidental Cobia catches that are just undersized this week. A few keepers are mixed in however not many. The water is still fairly warm into this week. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish listed below the report for more angling tips and tricks! INSHORE – The Redfish (Drum, Red) and Snook (Snook, Common) are incredible on the East and West side of the harbor along with the intracoastal. There is a mix of Redfish sizes from 16 – 38 inches. They are loving small Pinfish and there are some big fish are still around. The juvenile Tarpon and Drum (Drum, Black) are in the PGI and Port Charlotte Canals. They aren’t as plentiful but still there. Smaller Redfish and Snook are swimming the river. The salinity is increasing as the water clears up. Anglers are avoiding the open harbor to stay away from the wind. Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) are swimming the back. The Snapper (Snapper, Gray) are beginning to pick up on the flats and passes. No one is really going offshore at this point. On the beaches the Pompano (Pompano, Florida) are biting well. They are inside too but are still scattered. You’ll have to put time into find them. INSHORE – The Redfish have been going off really well along with the Snook (Snook, Common). Most of the better activity is on the East side, Bull Bay and Turtle Bay as well. The West wall is picking up a bit more as we haven’t had rain and the rivers are beginning to slow down significantly. The fish are on the move and changing their feeding pattern. They are switching to Pinfish and Shrimp. Both baits are very productive. A few mixed reports of Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are turning up but most of them are small. The bigger sizes are in the Pine Island area. Towards the intracoastal and the back side of Boca into Lemon bay the Snook and Redfish are still dominating. Around the islands and cuts where there is faster moving water there is a nice mix of Reds (Drum, Red) and Snook. The water temperature has dropped which has fired up the fish. Pompano (Pompano, Florida) are down by Placida, on the beach and towards Stump Pass. Anglers are skipping them when they are running the bars. Juvenile Tarpon are swimming the PGI Canal and have moved in from the bridges. Everything else is fairly scattered. No one is heading offshore yet. The New Store is open! Check it out in Fort Myers! INSHORE – Inside is pretty easy this week. The Snook (Snook, Common) bite is incredible from the passes to just inside the intracoastal. A lot of the fish that ran from the Red Tide and only made their way in a bit are staging into their Winter patterns. Fish are coming and going in Bull Bay, Turtle Bay and the lower portion of the West Wall. They are holding tons of fish but they are moving in and out. There has been Snook up to 42 inches, you just have to hit the right time. Live Pinfish are the key for Snook (Snook, Common) this week. Pine Island Sound and Lemon bay are similar. The new Rapala Single Hook Mullet on a flat retrieve has been productive for the Snook here and there. The fish know Winter is coming so they are turning onto the Pinfish feed. Redfish (Drum, Red) and Snook are a bit funky somedays coming off the full moon. Recently it was a bit slow however the past week on the East side from Two Pines to Alligator Creek has been holding scattered Snook and Redfish along the bushes and flats. Most are loose fish and not totally schooled up. Anglers are using Shrimp and Pinfish. Blue Crab are key for the Reds, especially cut up. MirrOlure Lil Johns in Watermelon Red Flake is a great artificial to throw. Tarpon are good but they are mostly juveniles. The 41 bridge in the morning at first light has been killer until about 10 am and after 10 pm. They are from 20-60 lbs. There are a bit more Sharks (Shark, Bonnethead) on the flats. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are picking up but most are still small. We are waiting for about 75 degree water temperatures before they group up and the bite becomes consistent. There is still quite a bit of fresh water pouring out of the Peace River. Each day it’s getting a bit better. The wind has been strong out of the North East and creating some good wave activity while effectively clearing up the water a bit. The New Store is open! Check it out in Fort Myers! OFFSHORE – It’s been so windy that most anglers are staying inside. Spanish and Kings (Mackerel, Spanish & Mackerel, King) are biting a bit closer in. The Kings are sporadic at best. Dolphin are swimming about 12 miles out. The bottom fishing has been slow. The upcoming cold front should change the activity for the better. BAIT REPORT – The Easterly wind has pushed a lot of bait closer to shore. Pinfish can be found along the intracoastal, not into the upper harbor but are in the lower end. Sabiki them up for bigger sizes or chum the flats for good numbers but smaller sizes. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below for additional tips and tricks! INSHORE – At Harbor Heights Park we are seeing Snook (Snook, Common) at San S, right under the water falling. Anglers are trolling the 16 bomber to find them. I-75 is holding some Drum (Drum, Black) and Tarpon. There is also a scattered Redfish (Drum, Red) bite around the islands close to the bridge. At the 41 Bridges we are seeing a few reports of Reds and plenty of Tarpon. Around Laishley Pier Snook are good at night but slow during the day. The Bay Shore piers have Sharks, and Redfish that are strangely close to shore. Sharks are fishing off the end. Port Charlotte Beach Pier and the Spillways along 41 have seen Sand Bream, Jacks (Jack, Crevalle) and decent Snook. Anglers are trolling to hit the slot Snook. The Myakka river is seeing Tarpon around the bridge on and off all day. There are also some Snapper (Snapper, Gray) and occasional Sheepshead. They are big. If you are searching for Snook, head out just after sunset. Towards the cutoff the Snook and Redfish are decent. The Reds are schooled up. Shrimp will work well to hook them along with small spoons. Cattle Dock and the locks entrances have a school which is at one or the other places. The Tarpon in the river is on and the Ladyfish have also shown up here. INSHORE – Inside the harbor going into Gasparilla Sound up and around the Charlotte Harbor has been the most productive for the past week as Red Tide is beginning to infiltrate Lemon Bay and Stump Pass. There are a lot of distressed fish in the local area. Blacktip Sharks, Sandbar Sharks (Shark, Blacktip & Shark, Sandbar) and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are swimming along with Snook (Snook, Common) and a few Redfish (Drum, Red). There are still some decent Tarpon swimming as well. Gasparilla Sound gets moving water from the passes so the Red Tide will turn over faster however Lemon Bay may take a while. OFFSHORE – Past the Red Tide around 9 miles anglers are finding fish some Grouper (Grouper, Red & Grouper, Gag) on Shrimp or cut bait. BAIT REPORT – Bait is doing well towards Port Charlotte. INSHORE – There has been quite a bit of Redfish (Drum, Red) caught around Lemon bay and Charlotte Harbor. They are in and around the creeks on the East side. It’s the time of year they begin to school up. A variety of baits are working including Pilchards and Whitebait. Bass Assassins and similar soft plastics will work as well. Snook (Snook, Common) are biting well and the sizes are great. There are quite a few keepers. Anglers are using live bait during the day and topwaters in the low light conditions. Soft plastics and swimming plugs are best. There are a lot of Pompano (Pompano, Florida), Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) and Kings (Mackerel, King) biting right outside. INSHORE – The tides are high this week, partly due to the storm and also because of the time of year. We expect the Snook (Snook, Common) to turn on at the bridges and stillways after the storm passes and the water pushes them in. They will be hungry as well. The bite should be great. The storm should perk up the Redfish (Drum, Red) and Flounder (Flounder, Southern) on the beaches as well when the storm cools the water down. New gear is coming soon! INSHORE – The Snook (Snook, Common) fishing in the passes has been insane, especially Boca, Redfish (Drum, Red) and Captiva Pass. After the evening after the thunderstorms have left the bite is good during sunset. There are some big bull Reds mixed in. Some great Tarpon are in the pass this past week. Anglers are catching them while searching for Snapper (Snapper, Gray) and they are consistent. North Pine Island Sound from Captiva up to Boca Grande we have found big Lemons, Bull and huge Blacktips (Shark, Lemon & Shark, Bull & Shark, Blacktip). Some Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) and Bluefish are mixed in. Bull Bay, Turtle Bay and the east side of the harbor is getting some good Redfish activity. Soon they will be after Pinfish and Crabs. There are a few schools that are worth spending some time on. The middle of the harbor still has small Sharks, and varied Tarpon. Tarpon and Drum (Drum, Black) are also running the canal. Plain white Clouser Minnows are working well to hook them. Crushed Ladyfish will be their preference very soon. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish listed below the report for more angling tips and tricks! OFFSHORE – From 3-15 miles the bite has been killer for Snapper (Snapper, Gray) and Grunts (Grunt, White). The Reds are in a bit closer and the Gags are out farther. Kings (Mackerel, King) are in 60-70 ft. Anglers are catching them deeper this week. Half to three quarter ounce egg sinkers are working well while free lining bait close to the bottom. Schoolie Dolphin, a few Sails (Billfish – Sailfish) and some small Wahoo have also been brought in. The Wahoo are only up to 15 lbs. INSHORE – The fishing has been good this week. The full moon has mixed things up a bit. The Redfish (Drum, Red) are good on the East side and down along the intracoastal on Shrimp, Blue Crab and cut bait. There has been some Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) however they are acting odd this week. There are schools in 4-7 ft of water and mostly down on the Southern end of the harbor. Some groups are up to 14 inches and some are up to 22 inches. It’s just a matter of finding them. Some are on the outside of the bar sitting close to the bottom in drop offs. They are up 23 inches in these areas. The biggest focus is all the Drum (Drum, Black) and Tarpon in the PGI and Port Charlotte Canals in great numbers. They are a lot of fun to catch and the center of the harbor has small Sharks (Shark, Bull & Shark, Blacktip & Shark, Lemon). Pirate Harbor Hole out to the intracoastal has nice Lemon Sharks. They are dominating the bottom end of the harbor up to 9 ft long. The Snook (Snook, Common) have spawned on the last full moon so they are moving a lot. The passes are holding big fish. The smaller fish are on the inside of the intracoastal, especially in Pine Island and Bull bay. The quantity is good here. They are about 12-29 inches. There hasn’t been much on Tarpon on the inside. There aren’t any good concentrations as there are no Glass Minnows or Ladyfish in the harbor. They should come back in soon. They are swimming the middle of the harbor in all the deeper holes and around Alligator Creek Reef. They are peppered all over. INSHORE – The weather is HOT this week! In the harbor we are finding Drum (Drum, Black) in the canals. They are 30-60 lbs. Small juvenile Tarpon are mixed in. Starting on the middle of the harbor and moving down we are seeing tons of small Sharks (Shark, Bull & Shark, Blacktip & Shark, Lemon) in the 20 ft holes. Along the East side on the bushes the Redfish (Drum, Red) are fair in moving water. The early morning or late afternoon bite is best. Look for wind and creeks to find moving water. Lots of Snook (Snook, Common) are all over the flats and bushes on the East side as well as throughout the intracoastal. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are mixed on the bar and the edge of the bar. The North end of Pine Island we are seeing great quality Trout up to 24 inches. Anglers are getting them using 4 inch jerk baits and big 4-5 inch Curly Tails by Gulp. A lot of Tarpon are on the lower end of the harbor and out towards Boca Grande. Pretty decent Sharks in the 5-8 ft range are in Pirate Harbor out to Boca. There are lots of females this year. Peanut Dolphin are around the same area with a few Sails (Billfish – Sailfish) and a scattered Wahoo bite. Lane Snapper (Snapper, Lane) are really good this week from 10-25 miles while the Mangroves (Snapper, Gray) are sporadic. The Lanes are way hotter during the July and August full moon while they spawn. The reefs will be sporadically full of them. They will school up similar to baitfish. INSHORE – Inside the harbor the Redfish (Drum, Red) are picking up the past few weeks. The East side and lower West wall are hot. Pine Island is even starting to see some good stuff. They are mainly under the bushes and at the mouths of creeks where you have good moving water. Cut bait like Ladyfish and Mullet are working well however Shrimp – either live or frozen are a killer bait as well. The smell helps the fish find them. In Lemon bay there is a ton of Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Redfish. Trout are also on the East side in assorted sizes. Use plastics while jigging on the bottom to find them. In the Port Charlotte Canal we are seeing huge Drum (Drum, Black) up to 60 lbs move in. Tarpon are all over the 20 ft holes in the harbor. Quite a few are along the beaches from Sanibel to Venice as well as the the intracoastal. Blacktip, Bonnet, Blacknose and Sharpnose Sharks (Shark, Black Tip & Shark, Bonnethead & Shark, Blacknose & Shark, Atlantic Sharpnose) are all inshore as well. A lot of Mangrove Snapper (Snapper, Mangrove) are from 15-20 miles getting ready to do their spawn on the next full moon. They are mixed with Lanes (Snapper, Lane). Weather along the gulf has made the fishing a bit thicker as less anglers can get out. OFFSHORE – Small schools of Mahi (Dolphin) have moved in above the reefs from 15-30 miles. INSHORE – The weather has been okay but the water has been making anglers a little crazy. The water is fresh as the water flushes out through the harbor. Redfish, (Drum, Red), Snook (Snook, Common) and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) can be found when you put some time in, but it has been difficult. The best fishing is from Cape Hayes into the intracoastal or the East side from Pirate Harbor into the intracoastal. Bull Bay and Turtle Bay have still got some good fish but you want to focus on the barrier islands at the entrance of it. Moving water is key right now as the water begins to get warm. Shrimp is a primary bait this week as whitebait is near impossible to find. Cut bait has been very productive as the fish are going for the smell due to the warm, dark water. Out near Boca Grande we are seeing Tarpon everywhere in the harbor. They are from the 41 Bridge to Boca Grande and the beaches. They are staying fairly consistent. They move in with the tide and stay in. Threadfins are the best bait as they are chasing them in. The upcoming full moon may move them to the pass for their final spawn for the summer. INSHORE – The weather has made the fishing very difficult this week. The wind and rain has kept anglers off the water for the most part. We have had no reports from this area so far but we hope to see conditions clear up soon. When that happens we expect to see a lot of pretty good activity. Redfish (Drum, Red) should really start to increase along with the Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) as the bait fish get pushed out of the river. Small Sharks (Shark, Blacktip & Shark, Bull), Tarpon and Snook (Snook, Common) may move in for a feeding frenzy. The wind may bring in a lot of bait fish as well so the nearshore will heat up with Bonito (Bonito, Little Tunny) in close within 3 miles. It may take a few days before the system calms down and the bite heats up. OFFSHORE – Once weather clears up we expect to see some hot bottom activity from the Grouper (Grouper, Gag). The weather can change just about everything so be prepared for a nice variety. Fishin Franks Bait and Tackle 941-625-3888 www.fishinfranks.comJune 3, 2016

INSHORE – This week we are seeing lots and lots of fun sized Sharks spread all over the harbour. There are Redfish on the west wall and in Pine Island sound. The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) activity has been kind of spotty but overall good this week. Inside there’s also a whole load of Tarpon on the beaches in the passes and in the harbor. The nice thing about this is now you have options for the Tarpon as opposed to just being limited to Boca Grande Pass. OFFSHORE – From 3-20 miles there are good spreads of Spanish Mackerel (Mackerel, Spanish). There are also a few Bonita (Bonito, Little Tunny), Cobia, and Kings (Mackerel, King) in this area. From 5-15 miles offshore near the wrecks, there has been Permit. Bottom-fish wise, the big Mangs (Snapper, Gray) are from 15-20 miles now that Gag grouper (Grouper, Gag) are open. INSHORE – Redfish (Drum, Red) are showing up everywhere and can be found in the Matlacha area and on the east side back at least about 2 sets of islands. There are also some fish up around the cut off but Redfish see to be scattered around this area at the moment. Snook have been incredible this year primarily due to perfectly timed rains. As a result, Snook can be found near the Barrier Islands, turtle bay, pine island sound, gasborillo sound, and the backside of the islands. The east side of the Harbour has an excellent population of Snook. Cobias are still hanging in there, you can primarily catch them with drifting outside of the sandbar about a half mile north of Pirate Harbour around 6 ft. of water but some are being caught in deeper water. Large triple tail is in the harbour and the gulf that easily surpass 20 inches. Tarpon have mostly been concentrated around the passes: Boca Grande, Captiva, Gasparilla, and Stump Pass. The Tarpon seem to be looking in the passes on the big outgoing tide where there is a big flush of crabs, making evening and night fishing most effective. Near the passes, there are monster sharks, manatees, porpoises, and Tarpon – and you can see them. The primary sharks that can be found along the east side of the sandbar further down towards burnt store, you have a great concentration of Bonnets (Shark, Bonnethead) and as you head off into the deeper water, you get Sharpnose (Shark, Atlantic Sharpnose) and Black Tips (Shark, Black Tip) that are mostly smaller in size. Once you are hitting Cape Haze, and that whole straits area out of Boca Grande Pass, you are looking at hitting 10-12 ft. sharks such as Bullsharks (Shark, Bull) and Hammerheads (Shark, H.H. – Great) in large quantities. The secret Tarpon weapon of choice as soon as the fish leave the passes is the the big Rapala Sub-Walk, the big Xrsb 15’s. They work best when you take the back hook off. INSHORE – Tons of Snook (Snook, Common) are showing up this week. Anglers are getting great rains to keep them moving towards the gulf. Mass migrations are happening. The East and West side of the harbor are filled with Snook. Bull Bay are Turtle Bay are loaded. The Redfish (Drum, Red) are good around Hog Island. They are on both the East and West side, although the East side they are way back up into the islands. Down in the Southern half of the harbor the Redfish are hotter than most places. This is the best place to fish them – in the strip that separates Pine Island from the mainland (Matlacha). Inside the harbor the Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish), Tarpon, Sharks, Catfish, Ladyfish and Jacks (Jack, Crevalle) are all hitting. The big story is the Black Drum (Drum, Black). For those who can find it, they are thick and huge! They are all acting like tiny minnow. There are three schools in the harbor and the main school are working the holes. Conditions are spectacular right now. The Boca passes are holding Gag Grouper (Grouper, Gag), Snapper (Snapper, Gray), and a few Sheepshead close to the top. Spanish can be found in this area along with Sharks and Tarpon. Everyone’s focus is the Tarpon. They are shifting between the intracoastal and the beaches. They are bouncing back and forth. The storms run them out deep. We look to see them being pushed along the beaches and passes over the weekend. They may even move into the harbor. The deep holes in the Western harbor will be good the next few weeks. OFFSHORE – In the nearshore the Snapper (Snapper, Gray) and Grunts (Grunt, White) are plentiful on the reefs. Legal Red Grouper (Grouper, Red) are 30 or more miles out in 100 or more feet. Tripletail are closer to shore for anglers who don’t want to go too far out. Cobia and Permit are swimming. They are better on the wrecks than reef. Blackfin Tuna (Tuna, Blackfin) are also hitting. Nice Schools of Bonita (Bonito, Little Tunny) are swimming and the Tuna are following in the Gulf. INSHORE – The main talk is the Tarpon this week. They are out by Boca Grande Pass, on the beaches and just inside the intracoastal. We expect them to move into the harbor with the cold front that seems to be moving through. Small to moderate sized Cobia and Sharks are moving throughout the center for the harbor. They are great for kids or new anglers. A few Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) are mixed in as they chase the Threadfins swimming. Redfish (Drum, Red) are still tough. You have to work for them by moving along the bushes on the East and West walls. The Snook (Snook, Common) are all migrating out towards the beaches right now. Everyday there are more and more fish. The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) have been hit and miss but this is the time of year where they build up into schools and move off the beaches to 5-15 ft of water. When you get into them you’ll be catching tons. OFFSHORE – Things have not quite heated up yet. Mangrove Snapper (Snapper, Gray) and Lane Snapper (Snapper, Lane) are hitting from 3-15 miles out. Permit are swimming the man-made reefs within 10 miles. Anglers going to 110-115 ft of water will find some Grouper (Grouper, Red). A few Kings (Mackerel, King) and Bonito (Bonito, Little Tunny) are still hanging around but they are not thick. There are some reports of Tuna (Tuna, Blackfin) mixed in with them. INSHORE – The biggest focus right now is the little Sharks (Shark, Blacktip & Shark, Bonnethead & Shark, Blacknose & Shark, Atlantic Sharpnose). They are scattered all over the harbor and intercoastal and are typically 2-4ft in length. They are always a fun catch. There has been a few Bulls (Shark, Bull), Lemons (Shark, Lemon) and Hammerheads (Shark, H.H. Great) hanging around as well but they are not as commonly caught. Snook tackle is working great on the smaller of the sharks. They are about 5-25 lbs in open water. A lot of Cobia are scattered in the same area. Most of them have been incidental catches. They have been right along the beaches. They are peppered from Ft. Myers to Tampa. Snook (Snook, Common) has closed but they are still all along the flats getting ready to spawn. They will make for a good catch and release bite. The two tougher fish are Redfish (Drum, Red) and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted). They have slowed since the warmer it gets the more difficult the Trout are to find. They move in schools out to the beaches and then disappear. So if you can get on a school you will catch plenty, but if they are gone you’ll have to put time in to find them. OFFSHORE – The Snapper (Snapper, Gray) bite is still insane from 3-15 miles out. The Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) and schoolie Kings (Mackerel, King) from 5-15 lbs are doing well from the nearshore passes out to 20 miles. Look for bait or structure to find them. If you find them around structure look out for the Barracudas (Barracuda, Great). BAIT REPORT – Threadfins and Spanish Sardines are swimming right off the beach. On a calm day they are everywhere. Fishin’ Franks is geared up with all the tackle you’ll need to hit the water. Fishin Franks Bait and Tackle 941-625-3888 www.fishinfranks.comApril 27, 2016

INSHORE – Everything is going crazy. The toughest fish is Redfish (Drum, Red) this week. Fish are all over on the East and West wall with some Snook (Snook, Common). The Snook are hot this week. They are easy to catch, finding a legal size is the difficult part. They are in the pattern of moving toward the beach prior to June. Throughout the centre of the harbour there is Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish), Cobia, and a few small to moderate sized Sharks (Shark, Spinner). The Tarpon are hanging around the harbor, passes and into the beaches. Everyday there are more and more of them. OFFSHORE – Kings (Mackerel, King) are swimming from the passes out to 20 miles. They are smaller from 8-15 lbs. There has also been some Cobia, but a lot of Barracuda (Barracuda, Great) on the reefs. There are also Permit holding up in the same area. Bonita (Bonito, Little Tunny), Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) and a few oddball Blackfin (Tuna, Blackfin) are as close as 10 miles. The Mangroves (Snapper, Gray) are still hot off the bottom with Lanes (Snapper, Lane). They are anywhere from 3-20 miles out. Red Grouper (Grouper, Red) are only good if you are in 110 ft of water. Things are beginning to light up! Fishin Franks Bait and Tackle 941-625-3888 www.fishinfranks.comApril 22, 2016

INSHORE – It’s starting to get really hot this week. The Snook (Snook, Common) are awesome on both the East and West wall. They are taking Whitebait. The better Reds (Drum, Red) are in Pine Island Sound but there are some on the East wall. They are beginning to switch to Whitebait but Pinfish and Shrimp are working well too. Throughout the center of the harbor in the deeper holes and off the edges of the bars we are seeing Sharks (Shark, Blacktip & Shark, Blacknose & Shark, Bonnethead). They are various sizes. Scattered Tarpon and Cobia are in the same area. The Tarpon are heating up but after the full moon we will see it heat up in the passes and on the beaches. A few Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) and a few Pompano (Pompano, Florida) are hitting from the beach. OFFSHORE – A few anglers have been getting offshore despite the wind. They are seeing some Kings (Mackerel, King) from 10-25 miles. They are schoolie sized from 5-15 lbs. There are a few bigger sizes closer in but they are difficult to find. Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) and Tripletail are doing well by the crab trap buoys and the nearshore reefs. There are Permit on the nearshore reefs from Sanibel to Venice as well. Grouper (Grouper, Red) have been from 100-115 ft. This is where you will find some of legal sizes. Big Sharks (Shark, Bull & Shark, Sandbar & Shark, Blacktip) up to 8 ft have also been found offshore. There was even a big Spinner (Shark, Spinner) caught. Now and then you will see a Hammerhead (Shark, H. H. – Great). Fishin Franks Bait and Tackle 941-625-3888 www.fishinfranks.comApril 14, 2016

INSHORE – Redfish (Drum, Red) and Snook (Snook, Common) are really starting to heat up this week. Over on the East and West wall are hot. Just about anywhere from the middle to Southern part of the harbor is best. Whitebait and Shrimp are their main preference. Pinfish will work if all else fails. Cobia are slowly starting to become thicker in the harbor. Tarpon are quite scattered in the same area. Look for free jumpers and rollers. They are also on the beaches and throughout the passes. Shrimp is the best bait to use on these early Tarpon. Shrimp will outfish everyone, especially in the first week. Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) have been caught but are not hot yet. Mark your calendars! Next Saturday Gary Loomis will be in store signing autographs and showing new products! Contact Fishin Franks for more details. OFFSHORE – The weather has finally broken. The Snapper (Snapper, Gray) bite from 3-15 miles out is hot. If anglers head to 100-115 ft you can find huge sizes consistently as well. There are some Grouper (Grouper, Red) mixed in as well. Permit are showing up in the nearshore reefs as well. Kings (Mackerel, King) have now moved in as well. Fishin Franks Bait and Tackle 941-625-3888 www.fishinfranks.comApril 7, 2016

INSHORE – Around the 41 bridge we are seeing Trout (Seatrout, Spotted), Whiting (Kingfish, Southern) and Spanish Mackerel (Mackerel, Spanish). The numbers are consistent so far and the sizes are varied. The Trout are fairly small at this point however the Redfish seem to be great sizes. We expect to start seeing Tarpon in the area very soon. Snook (Snook, Common) are being caught in the creeks along with some more Redfish. We have also seen some large size Permit at the mouth of the creek as well. The nearshore reefs are holding some Spanish as well as Cobia. Snapper (Snapper, Mangrove) and Sheepshead have been scattered around the area. It has been a bit windy for most anglers to get out so far this week. The piers are holding some Redfish and Snook that are hot during the night bite, while the Trout are hitting more towards dusk. The Jug Creek shoals have plenty of fish so far. We are seeing Spanish, Sharks (Shark, Blacktip) and Pompano (Pompano, Florida). Reds and Snook have also been caught in the area. White jerk shads are the key to hooking them. OFFSHORE – We are continuing to see Grouper (Grouper, Red) come off the bottom on the offshore wrecks. The bite is great so far from 100-110 ft of water. The sizes are huge as well. Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater) are mixed in the same area. Permit are holding up on the reefs within 15 miles. The big Snapper (Snapper, Gray & Snapper, Lane & Snapper, Vermillion) are still hanging around. The bite is consistent from 8-10 ft. Kings (Mackerel, King) and Tarpon are the main focus a bit closer in. We are seeing them within 10 ft and the sizes are great. BAIT REPORT – Bait fish are around the Shoals this week. INSHORE – There is a lot of patterns changing this week and things are getting better. There are some really big Redfish (Drum, Red) along the intracoastal and towards Boca Grande. Smaller sizes are scattered on the East side and the West wall. There is an assortment of Snook (Snook, Common) in the same area however they are smaller. There are tons of them. They are going after the Whitebait this week although Shrimp and Pinfish are still working to hook them. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) have been tough as they are all small so far. Spanish Mackerel (Mackerel, Spanish) and small Sharks are beginning to show up inside the harbor. Some Cobia and resident Tarpon are beginning to move as well. Along the beach from 12 ft to 30 ft we are seeing big Kings with a few migratory Tarpon starting to show up. Bombers or number 12 Rapalas have worked well to hook the Kings (Mackerel, King) using live bait. The water is cloudy due to the weather but there is a lot of bait out there for the fish to eat. OFFSHORE – Barracudas (Barracuda, Great) are starting to show up on the nearshore reefs along with some Cobia. Snappers (Snapper, Gray & Snapper, Lane & Snapper, Vermillion) are showing up from 8-10 ft. Grouper (Grouper, Red) and AJs (Jack, Amberjack Greater) are hitting at roughly 100 ft and the bite is great so far. Ajs are hitting big jigs, bucktails or butterfly jigs with Pinfish or even your Snapper. The Kings and the Tarpon are the main focus this week. The bigger sizes around 25 lbs have been swimming in singles and doubles around 5 miles of the shoreline though. You will have to put some time in to find them though. The farther out you go the more schoolies there are. BAIT REPORT – Threadfins and Sardines are just off the beach this week. INSHORE – The weather has been great in this area as of late. Things are transitioning into Spring. Redfish (Drum, Red) are great on the inside and throughout the intracoastal. Whitebait and cut bait are doing well to hook them. The mouths of the canals are holding some great Snook (Snook, Common). Little Sharks are slowly moving into the low end of the harbor. Cobia have been scattered between inshore and offshore so far. A few Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) have been in the passes and within the first 3-4 miles of the beach. Some have moved into the harbor. We expect this bite to continue into the weekend. OFFSHORE – Snapper are great from 5-15 miles out this week. It’s on fire. Cobia have been in the area along with Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish). Tripletail are all on the crab buoys. There are no reports of Kings (Mackerel, King). We expect that the Tarpon are getting closer so we should see them in this area soon. INSHORE – Things are beginning to heat up this week. The water is starting to fill up. The Redfish (Drum, Red) are chewing better on Pinfish and Whitebait that are showing up on the beaches. Snook, Common are looking for the same bait. The Southern part of the harbor and the intracoastal are the best places to look for these. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted), Sheepshead and Snapper, Gray have been scattered around the flats and at the mouths of the canals or upper harbor. They are getting ready to head out to the offshore where it is cooler. A few Shark, Blacktip and Shark, Atlantic Sharpnose have turned up in the Southern part of the harbor. There are some Mackerel, Spanish mixed in as well as in the offshore, the passes and the nearshore reefs. All the Snappers (Snapper, Gray & Snapper, Vermillion & Snapper, Lane) are doing phenomenal from 3-15 miles. Cobia are showing up along the beaches, the reefs and the crab trap buoys this week as well. This is a good sign of the Spring pattern moving in. This weekend is the annual Tent Sale! INSHORE – There is a mixed bag of fish this week. Redfish (Drum, Red) are beginning to show up but are still sporadic on the East and West side. The East side is also holding some Pompano, Florida which are hit and miss. The daytime bite for Reds and Pompano has been the best time to hook them. The Snook, Common are very active in the afternoon and evening throughout the intracoastal on the piers. We are beginning to see a few Mackerel, Spanish and Cobia move into the harbor however the bite is not consistent. March 19th is Fishin’ Franks Bait & Tackle’s Tent sale! Stop in and take advantage of the great deals! OFFSHORE – Mackerel, Spanish and Cobia have been found up to 10 miles out this week. Snapper (Snapper, Gray & Snapper, Gray) are being caught from 10-18 miles off the shore which is the main focus for most offshore anglers. They have the hot bite so far. Grouper, Red is still sporadic but can be found to the North from 30-35 miles. Fishin Franks Bait and Tackle 941-625-3888 www.fishinfranks.comMarch 3, 2016

INSHORE – Things are starting to warm up. Reds (Drum, Red) have been tough and small this week. They are not the main focus for most anglers. Moving around to cover some water has been the best method to hook them because they are so spread out. Snook, Common are still on the slow side as well but they are starting to improve with the water temperature increase. Look under docks, bridges and mangroves to find them. Anglers are throwing Shrimp and plastic flukes to hook them. Pompano, Florida have been swimming the beach this week along with some scattered Flounder (Flounder, Southern & Flounder, Gulf). We expect to see Cobia on the nearshore reefs as well. March 19th is Fishin’ Franks Bait & Tackle’s Tent sale! Stop in and take advantage of the great deals! OFFSHORE – Snapper (Snapper, Gray & Snapper, Yellowtail & Snapper, Lane) and Grouper, Red are doing well. Squid and Sardines have been the key to reeling them in. Jigging Spoons has been productive as well. Fishin Franks Bait and Tackle 941-625-3888 www.fishinfranks.comFebruary 24, 2016

INSHORE – There is quite a bit of action from this area as of late. The 41 bridge is producing lots of Whiting (Kingfish, Southern) which is not only very good eating fish but you can use the cuts as bait for Cobia, Snook (Snook, Common), or any larger fish. Around Alligator Creek and Poacher’s Cut the Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are mostly Smaller and the Sheepshead and Snapper (Snapper, Gray) are both doing well. The reefs are holding Sheepshead, Snapper, and Cobia. It is a great place to use those Whiting strips you caught at the bridge. There are a few Trout and Whiting along the bayshore piers as well as some Pompano (Pompano, Florida) and Trout out by the bar all the way to the Mouth of Jug Creek. Redfish (Drum, Red) have been caught there but they are tricky to get. Fishin Franks Bait and Tackle 941-625-3888 www.fishinfranks.comFebruary 18, 2016

INSHORE – The weather has finally broken up in this area. The Reds (Drum, Red) are beginning to perk up on the East side of the harbor and down in the Pine Island Sound. They are still scattered up and down the coast. They are patchy and the rain has made some of the areas a bit dark but this is nothing for the fish. The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are picking up as well. The bigger fish are in the shallows of 2-3 ft while the smaller are in 4-6 ft. They are around the Pine Island Sound area, Lemon Bay and on the East side of the Harbor as well. There are mixed reports of Pompano, Florida and Shark, Bonnethead in the same are. Anglers are throwing Shrimp to hook them. Sharks can be easily caught on light tackle as they are the easiest of the species to catch. They are a fun fish to target, especially for new anglers. OFFSHORE – From 4-15 miles there is a great bite of Snapper (Snapper, Gray & Snapper, Lane). The Grouper (Grouper, Gag) have been terrible unless you are willing to go past 120 ft. Shrimp has been working best along with cut Squid and cut Sardines for the Snapper. Fishin Franks Bait and Tackle 941-625-3888 www.fishinfranks.comFebruary 10, 2016

INSHORE – The wind in this area has kept a lot of anglers off the water so far this week. On top of this there is Red Tide and a fresh water mix along the beaches and throughout the intracoastal. There are plenty of anglers heading out despite these conditions. The areas are patchy though so there is no particular hot location. The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are doing well if you are willing to cover a lot of water to find them. They are swimming in 3-5 ft of water whether it’s high or low tide. They are scattered so you may have to put some time in to find them. We hope to see things clear up for the weekend. The Red Tide is mostly on the top water so lower and deeper baits will be your best bet this week. OFFSHORE – Roughly 12 miles out there are some Snapper, Gray and Grunts despite the Red Tide reaching up to 15 miles out. Grouper, Red are doing exceptionally well from 20-25 miles on Squid or Sardines. Live Pinfish have been productive as well. We hope to see things clear up for the weekend. BAIT REPORT – Due to the Red Tide the Pinfish have been difficult to find and keep this week. Fishin Franks Bait and Tackle 941-625-3888 www.fishinfranks.comFebruary 4, 2016

INSHORE – There has finally been some nice weather in the area as of late. The Reds (Drum, Red) are picking up more on the East side of the harbor. The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) hasn’t quit however the big fish are still deep so you have to work the bait slow. The smaller sizes are everywhere though. The weather has the fish mixed up and there is a bit of fresh water mix so this makes them difficult to find sometimes. Sheepshead are throughout the intracoastal and the nearshore reefs. They’ve been pushed out from the passes. OFFSHORE – Snappers (Snapper, Mangrove and Snapper, Lane) are doing well from 8-12 miles this week. Grouper, Red have turned up in great sizes along with AJs (Jack, Amberjack Greater) at about 25 miles. Closer in at roughly 20 miles there is a great Triggerfish, Gray bite. They are eating cut Shrimp or cut Squid on a double porgy rig. A 1/O circle hook is recommended. There are some oddball Bonito, Little Tunny however the water has been so rough anglers have not made it past them to hit some Tuna. BAIT REPORT – Pinfish are swimming but you have to look deep to find them. Fishin Franks Bait and Tackle 941-625-3888 www.fishinfranks.comJanuary 28, 2016

INSHORE – Despite the rain and weather the Sheepshead have been dominating. They are up in the rivers and throughout the intracoastal, Pine island sound and the bay. Docks and Oyster bars are holding the good sizes. Crabs are difficult to come by so frozen Shrimp is the bait of choice for most anglers. You can use smaller sizes or use pieces of Shrimp. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are doing great in the intracoastal. Most are still small however the bigger ones are in about 3-5 t of water and will hit a soft plastic as long as it’s worked slow. Reds (Drum, Red) have been around but you will have to hunt hard to find them. The daytime bite for all fish has been great, especially the afternoon bite as the water has a chance to warm up and the fish will get moving. Most of the fishing has moved down South a little bit due to the weather conditions recently. OFFSHORE – Mangrove Snapper (Snapper, Gray) and Porgy are biting well from 8-10 miles this week however anglers are having trouble finding breaks in the weather to hit the water. There were reports of Grouper, Red and Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater) that we hope will continue to bite after this current front passes. There are also great Sheepshead on structure around the intracoastal on docks, bridges and pilings. They are plentiful especially in Lemon bay. Small bait such as Shrimp or pieces of Shrimp are working better to hook the bigger sizes. This is working well, especially in the rougher water. INSHORE – In the harbor there have been low tides producing Reds (Drum, Red) and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) in potholes. They are holding up on the east side and throughout the intracoastal. Throwing Small Pinfish and Shrimp have been the best means to hook them so far. Anglers must remember to work them slow as the temperature mixed with rising and falling pressure has them fairly inactive. There are reports of Pompano, Florida and Flounder (Flounder, Southern & Flounder, Gulf) swimming from Cape Haze to Jug Creek as well as the mouths of the passes. The nearshore is producing a great Snapper (Snapper, Gray) bite along with Porgy and Sheepshead. They can be found anywhere from 3-12 miles out. There are no reports of Snook, Common or Mackerel, Spanish so far this week. OFFSHORE – Anglers determined to get on the water this week despite the unfavorable weather conditions can expect to see Tarpon swimming anywhere from 3-5 miles. The larger sizes are farther out at this point. BAIT REPORT – There are Pinfish running so far this week and can be caught with a cast net or Sabiki rigs while chumming the bars and edges. 4-6 ft of water are the key spots. INSHORE – The weather isn’t quite as cold as it should be for this time of year so the Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Sheepshead are not on fire yet. The Snook, Common, Reds (Drum, Red), Flounder (Flounder, Southern & Flounder, Gulf) as well as some Mackerel, Spanish are still biting inshore. The Cobia bite has been here and there and gets better farther out at the 3 mile mark at the reefs. OFFSHORE – Anything in the offshore is pretty far out this week so most anglers are focusing on the inshore as the bite if far more plentiful so far. BAIT REPORT – Finger Mullet and Pinfish are all swimming the beaches. They are plentiful and easy to stock up on however they are scattered so anglers will have to put their time in. INSHORE – The Snook, Common are fired up on the flats and on the East side around the bays. The cold weather has made them active. The full moon is making it tough on the Reds (Drum, Red) as they have become more spotty with the changing tides. They aren’t sure where to go. If you are willing to cover ground you’ll do well. Pompano, Florida, Flounder, Southern & Flounder, Gulf and Snapper, Gray are doing great from both boat or shore along the beaches. Mullet are working well as bait and they are thick this week. OFFSHORE – Snapper, Lane, Grunts and Sheepshead are swimming the nearshore from 3-7 miles mixed in with straggler Mackerel, King and Cobia in the same places. Shark, Black Tip & Shark, Sandbar are chasing schools of Mullet that have gone offshore. They will likely follow them back in and anglers will be able to catch them right off the beaches. Anglers just have to make sure they know their species identification especially well when they are catching sharks. BAIT REPORT – Mullet are thick this week and all the fish are chasing them! INSHORE – The Snook, Common bite has been steady in the area this week and with the weather patterns as of late this bite should continue through the rest of December. The weather has also produced a strong Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) bite as they are swimming the flats still. Pompano, Florida are hitting on both sides of the harbor this week and anglers hope that the season will be as good as last year. Reds (Drum, Red) are of course, still swimming but beginning to move into the canals, creeks and rivers where they will likely stay for the rest of the winter. Once the cold weather hits they will school up and be an easier catch. We are just starting to see Sheepshead in the area schooling up around docks, piers and bridges and the good bite should continue over the season. OFFSHORE – Since the temperature has not dropped too much as this point we are still seeing a decent bite of Mackerel, Spanish and Mackerel, King in the deeper water. A flat line dropping Whitebait is producing the best results from an anchored boat however they are surprisingly hitting Shrimp from the surface as well this week. The bottom fishing has been hot as well. Grouper, Gag is catch and release however Snapper, Gray, Porgy, Grunt and Hogfish are still open and doing well. INSHORE – The hot Red (Drum, Red) bite is beginning to peter off. They can still be caught this week however not as frequently. The Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) are around with the Sharks (Shark, Bonnethead & Shark, Black Tip) through the harbor. The Mirrolure mirrodines are the best lure so far this week producing great results. There have been (Flounder, Southern & Flounder, Gulf) on the East and West sides along with some more Reds and Snook, Common. They are loving the gulp this week. Sheepshead, Snapper, Yellowtail and Grunts are all swimming the nearshore so far and are loving anything live or soft plastics and bucktails. OFFSHORE – Cobia and Kings (Mackerel, King) have been biting within about 10 miles from the shore this week. They are loving the slow troll at roughly 50-55 ft. There have also been reports of AJs (Jack, Amberjack Greater) and Cuda (Barracuda, Great) swimming the offshore as well. They have been spread out across the bottom so far this week. BAIT REPORT – Pinfish and Shrimp are running so far however this may change with the warm temperatures expected this weekend. Fishin’ Franks Bait and Tackle 941-625-3888December 3, 2015

INSHORE – Reds (Drum, Red) are doing absolutely incredible on the East and West walls. They are beginning to transition from hitting Pinfish to Shrimp. Both are working well this week. There are lots of Flounder (Flounder, Southern & Flounder, Gulf) swimming and competing for best bite this week. Cobia have actually made their way to the harbor too. Many are undersized however and not keepers. They are hitting bucktails and bombers on a slow troll around the harbor and the reefs as well. OFFSHORE – There are lots of Cobia offshore this week all the way to the harbor. They are hanging out on the reefs. Anglers have been slow trolling in about 50-55 ft. at most. Kings (Mackerel, King) are all over the place with Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) and tons of Snapper (Snapper, Gray & Snapper, Lane & Snapper, Mutton). They have been coming up in various sizes however mostly on the small size up to 6 lbs. AJs (Jack, Amberjack Greater) and Grouper, Red have been spread out along the bottom just about everywhere. Certain Groupers are closed now so it is always a good idea to double check the regulations to make sure. BAIT REPORT – Whitebait is beginning to cut back as the water temperature warms back up. Live baiters continue to see Pinfish and Shrimp running and they are significantly effective this week. Fishin’ Franks Bait and Tackle 941-625-3888November 26, 2015
Port Charlotte Fishing Report
INSHORE – The temperature has dropped in this area which has actually improved a lot of the fishing. The best catches have come from Pine Island Sound on the South end all the way down to the Sanibel Flats. The power lines have been a key spot as well. They have all been producing Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) in various sizes from small to gigantic. The Sheepshead have been doing well too. Tarpon have become more timid however by the weekend they should turn back on and be chasing Pilchards. Netting bait may be a problem this weekend if the wind does not die down. This has made for a good Red (Drum, Red) bite as they seem to love the wind. Most anglers are throwing live Shrimp on jigs along the bottom. The nearshore has not had many reports this week as boats have had a hard time even getting out this far to the buoys. The Tripletail has been phenomenal in this area and if the conditions calm down should continue over the holiday weekend. Anglers should take live Shrimp on small hooks to catch them. There is not necessarily a preferable tide however the inbound afternoon and falling morning has been great lately. OFFSHORE – It has been a tough go in the deeper water as of late. The unfavorable weather has made getting on the water extremely difficult for anglers. Anyone who would like to head out on the water this holiday when conditions lie down can always check out our Tips feature which provides additional information and suggestions on how to improve your catch. BAIT REPORT – Shrimp and Pilchards are both running this week although they may be hard to bring in with all of the wind in this area. Book your Holiday trips with Capt. Rob Mody now before spots fill up! There have been a few reports of Grouper, Gags being caught just outside the edge of the nearshore. They have made their way in due to the warm water as well as some remnants of Red Tide. There have not been any reports of Mackerel, King this week however the Mackerel, Spanish have been swimming the offshore and there may be some good bites over the holiday weekend. 239-851-1242 soulmatecharters.comNovember 20, 2015
Port Charlotte Fishing Report
INSHORE – Reds (Drum, Red) are doing very well just about everywhere this week. The East and West sides all the way towards the upper harbor have seen good sizes and numbers of Reds. They are hitting smaller baits such as quarter oz. gold spoons or mirrolure little Johns as artificial choices. If anglers choose to use natural bait then Pinfish by far is the best choice. Shrimp are working well too however everyone knows that Pinfish are the number one bait for Reds right now. As the weather is still fairly warm there has not been much action from the harbor to the river with the exception of the occasional Tarpon bite. They are crushing Ladyfish and big lures such as savage swim baits or hoagies. Reports have come in of both good numbers and weights. OFFSHORE – The Mackerel (Mackerel, King & Mackerel, Spanish) bite has begun to pick up from 35-40 miles out. They are swimming with Bonito – Little Tunny and even some Tuna, Blackfin. Anglers have been trolling with Bluerunners or using spoons and stretch 30s to try to hook the few Grouper, Gag leftover as well. BAIT REPORT – Live baiters can catch Bluerunners, Speedos and Spanish Sardines in the nearshore on sabiki rigs before they head out to the deep water. INSHORE – Tarpon are absolutely on fire both in the harbor and around the mouth of the harbor. They have been moving all around so anglers should not have trouble locating them. Live bait or bait busters have been their bait of choice. The Red (Drum, Red) bite has been great as well as people are catching them on the flats of the East wall as well as the North section of the West wall. Any structure is generally a good bet. Anyone throwing a gold spoon or Shrimp on a jig should do well here. There have also been reports of some Cobia having been caught on and off. The numbers have not been as good as last year however the sizes have still been decent. Seatrout, Spotted are pretty much all along the bar chasing anything live. OFFSHORE – The Kingfish (Mackerel, King) bite has been doing extremely well offshore lately. They are coming up in various sizes and have not been much trouble to hook. Anglers can find them anywhere from 1 – 5 miles off the coast. Stretch 25 or 30 have been working very well to hook them. This is pretty much the only species offshore anglers are seeing at this time. BAIT REPORT – Squirrelfish and Pinfish are both running and can be caught on a Sabiki rig. There is Whitebait still present in the harbor however it is not as plentiful as it has been in the past. OF NOTE – Check out Fishin’ Frank’s Bait and Tackle’s fresh rod displays. INSHORE – Tarpon are doing extremely well right now as they’re chasing Ladyfish. The birds are also giving away their spots and there’s been some Tarpon weighed in hitting 100-130 lbs. They are hiding in holes in the harbor as well as the mouth of the river and scattered around bridges. Anglers can expect conditions to hold through to next week as long as the weather doesn’t take a big turn. Reds (Drum, Red) continue to bite over on the East side and West wall. Pinfish, live or cut are what most fish are biting. Whitebait is also working for Snook, Common however not many of them are keeper size at this time. OFFSHORE – Throughout the passes in roughly 40 ft of water anglers are seeing lots of Mackerel (Mackerel, Spanish and Mackerel, King). Grouper, Gag have also been hitting in the deeper water. Stretch 25 or 30 have been working very well with both Kings and Gags and a small silver spoon will work for the Spanish. Bonito, Little Tunny have been sporadic as well as Tuna, Blackfin. BAIT REPORT – Pinfish are running and can be caught with a Sabiki rod or cast net. Live baiters are chumming around sandholes and the Pinners will simply jump in. Whitebait has mostly moved out so it will be a little harder to find. OF NOTE – Check out Fishin’ Frank’s Bait and Tackle’s fresh rod displays. Fishin Franks Bait and Tackle 941-625-3888Hey Angler!

Port Charlotte Fishing Report
OFFSHORE – The deep waters are safe from anglers lately as conditions have been way too rough to get out on the water. No one has been taking on the conditions this week and those who do haven’t gone past the 3 mile mark. One Captain reported some Grouper (Grouper, Gag) on the weekend while trolling when the wind lied down for a few hours. Otherwise there have been no reports at this time so we are anxiously awaiting improved weather.
INSHORE – Redfish (Drum, Red) are doing very well throughout the entire lower harbor. Small spoons roughly a quarter ounce to eighth ounce with Live Pinfish, Cut Pinfish or Cut Ladyfish are working very well. Reds are up to 38 inches but mostly around the 30 inch mark. Trout are just now beginning to to pick up a little more consistently. Most of them are fairly small sizes at the moment however there are some big guys scattered throughout. The water temperature continues to remain fairly warm resulting in sluggish Trout expected to become more active when the cool air moves in. Bait under a popping cork or curl tail jig is your best bet. Anything in white will get bit by the trout. There are some Snapper (Snapper, Gray) starting to pick up as well. Pompano (Pompano, Florida) and Flounder are also starting to increase and they are in targetable numbers. You can find a lot of these on the lower harbor until they start moving with the changing weather.
BAIT REPORT – It is not a good time to be a Shrimp or Pinfish as they are running and the fish are eating. Whitebait however is a little more safe as most fish seem to be ignoring these guys.

OFFSHORE – Wind has made offshore fishing nearly impossible past 2 miles out. This may get better over the weekend keep a close eye on sea conditions.
INSHORE – Trout are beginning to pick up in the Southern end of the harbour as well as the east end throughout the intercoastal. Lemon bay has also been a fantastic spot for Trout and Redfish if you’re using live Shrimp. Trout are hitting whatever you put in front of them lately though with darker DOAs under a popping cork being fairly popular. They’re loving the Pinfish too so follow the birds to find them. Bonita have started to show up with followed by Blackfin Tuna. The Blackfin are spread out from 2-10 miles so keep an eye on the birds. We usually get good sized Blackfin here.
BAIT REPORT – If you can find Pinfish they are working well but are scattered about.

Port Charlotte Fishing Report
OFFSHORE: Just when things began to improve for offshore fishing, the rains returned and southwest Florida has gotten more than its share of rain this year, in addition, the wind has prevented all but the hardiest from staying out in the Gulf too long. We have also experienced some of the highest tides of the year due to the “super moon” this week. That being said, however, some anglers are reporting a bit of luck with Flounder and Pompano just outside the passes to the Gulf. Those anglers who have managed to get farther out before the weather gets to them are catching Grouper and Snapper at about 12 miles out near the reefs, using cut bait down at or near the bottom in 60 -100 feet of water.
INSHORE: All the rain washing down the rivers has made the water very murky and has messed with the regular salinity levels. You can still catch plenty of Mangrove Snapper, Ladyfish, Redfish and Snook, but you’ll have to put the bait right in front of them or fish at night where the lights will attract them. Tarpon fishing is at its peak now and there are plenty of big ones in Charlotte Harbor, Boca Grande and in the flats in and around Boca Grande. Successful and seasoned anglers use a two-pronged strategy for catching tarpon, but first, a note about using light line. If you are using light line to target Tarpon, be aware that if you do not land them and remove the hook, there’s a good chance that they will die. If you are targeting Tarpon, then make sure you are using at least 40-60 lb braided line with 50 lb test flouro. Now for the two pronged approach: Start out by looking for Ladyfish. You can troll at 2-3 mph with a Minnow type jig or lure in about 6-8 feet of water. Once you find the Ladyfish, stop and cast for them until you have put 4 or 5 into your bait well. Next, get your boat barely up on a plane and begin looking for large fish rolling near the top of the water. Once you find the Tarpon, move your boat into the shallow water along a sand bar, freeline a Ladyfish, toss it toward the Tarpon and put your rod into a sturdy pole holder. While you are waiting for the Tarpon to grab your bait, use another rod to cast a D.O.A baitbuster, root beer color or dark green, on four feet of leader. One of these two methods should hook you up with the fight of the week! Spanish Mackerel and Jacks are running in schools just inside and outside the passes and some anglers are catching them on shiny jigs.
PIERS/BRIDGES: at the 41 bridges, anglers are still finding Redfish, Black Drum and Tarpon. Pilchards are abundant near the bridges and along the shallows near the banks, and those casting nets for them are coming up with all the bait they need. Alligator Creek still has some nice snapper in the channel, but they are getting a bit harder to catch due to the murky water. The Bay Shore Piers are good for Red Fish, and Black Drum, but not in the numbers we saw last week. All the piers are producing Snook at night. Englewood Pier (Tom Adams Bridge) is still seeing some large Redfish and a few Black Drum on shrimp and pinfish. Cape Haze Reef is again reporting schools of Spanish Mackerel and some very big Mangrove Snapper on Pilchards. The Mackerel are hitting jigs and small bait fish. Charlotte Harbor is still pretty full of Tarpon, but you will need to look for them near the bigger holes.
BAIT: Pilchards are pretty much everywhere. Look for them along the banks and anywhere there is a current, especially near bridges and inlets to creeks and bays. They will look like raindrops on the surface, and if you don’t get them on the first cast, try using a ¼ inch cast net. Remember to return any trout, snapper or other game fish you might catch accidentally.

Port Charlotte Fishing Report
OFFSHORE: The rain has tapered off a bit and the Gulf has been calm enough for anglers to get out and do some serious fishing. The passes out to the Gulf are full of Snapper, Mackerel and Snook. Starting about three miles out in the Gulf, there are plenty of Spanish Mackerel to go around. Go out farther to about 12 miles and there are some very big Snapper, Porgies and Grunts. Even farther out, in the water over 60 feet deep, anglers are finding Grouper. Once the water cools down a few more degrees, the Grouper will be coming in a bit closer. INSHORE: The weather has finally begun to cool once again and the fish are heading through the passes and onto the flats. Anglers will find both Snook and Redfish in Bull Bay and Turtle Bay, as well as under most of the docks near Little Gasparilla Pass. Try dropping a greenback under one of the docks on a sliding ½ oz. sinker with a 2/0 hook. Let the bait drift with the current under the dock and then hang on! Keep your drag tight so that those big fish cannot wrap you around one of the support poles. Also showing up both in the passes and around the docks are keeper Flounder and large Mangrove Snapper. Again, they love those feisty little greenbacks, and the best way to hook the bait is just above the bottom rear dorsal fin so that the bait will tend to swim down toward the bottom. Some Spotted Sea Trout are still hanging out on the flats in 4-5 feet of water, and they will strike Pinfish, Greenbacks and Shrimp. Some anglers are still having good success with D.O.A’s Deadly Combo with white artificial shrimp. Drift over the flats, toss out the Deadly Combo and jerk the bobber to attract fish, pulling the combo toward the boat. Give the artificial shrimp time to float down and then give a little jerk to splash the bobber. The Trout will usually hit the shrimp on its way down. Alligator Creek is seeing some pretty decent Redfish and even a few Jacks. Some anglers are using minnow-like lures and others are using Shrimp and Greenbacks. Anglers in Lemon Bay are having a field day with Redfish and Snook under the docks and between the islands, especially where water is flowing with the tide. PIERS/BRIDGES: at the 41 bridges, anglers are picking up quite a few Redfish, Black Drum and Tarpon, mostly on greenbacks and some shrimp. Alligator Creek is producing some nice snapper in the channel (on shrimp) and some nice Red Fish at the mouth of the creek (on shrimp and pinfish). The Bay Shore Piers are good for Red Fish, and Black Drum. Of course, all the piers are producing Snook at night. Englewood Pier (Tom Adams Bridge) is getting some over slot Redfish and some Black Drum on shrimp and pinfish. Cape Haze Reef is reporting some good sized Spanish Mackerel and some very big Mangrove Snapper, some up to five pounds on Greenbacks. The Mackerel are hitting jigs and small bait fish. The deep holes in Charlotte Harbor are harboring (pun intended) some large Tarpon and some Black Drum. Some anglers have reported some Trout beginning to move into the area. Head on over to Laishley Pier if you want to have some fun with Gar. Successful anglers are using a float with about two feet of leader and are reporting Gar up to 4 feet long! Bait: Now that the water temperature is dropping a bit, the Greenbacks and Pinfish are back with a vengeance. Try looking along the shore where the bank drops off. Look for an area that looks like rain drops are hitting the surface and use a castnet or sabiki rig depending on the depth of the water. There is plenty of white bait at Devil Fish Key. Port Charlotte Fishing Report
OFFSHORE: Well, the rain has certainly not been a friend to anglers; still from 25-30 miles out, anglers are catching plenty of Red Grouper on sardines. At about 15 miles out, there are plenty of Mangrove and Lane Snapper, along with some Grunts and Porgies. Some nice Amberjacks are hanging out on the reefs and wrecks, with more abundant fish at the wrecks (They love mackerel and some of the larger bait fish). The cobia are out in the deeper water with an occasional bite close to the passes. INSHORE: Bokeelia (Pine Island) is flush with Snapper and Red Fish at the mouth of the channel, and while the Snapper are hot for shrimp, the Red Fish are striking dark lures and spinnerbaits as well as pinfish and pilchards. Bull Bay and Turtle Bay are seeing more Snook moving into the bay and plenty of Snapper at the inlets. The Cape Haze Reef is flush with Spanish Mackerel and more Sharks than most anglers probably want. The Mackerel are hitting shrimp, small bait fish and shiny silver lures while the sharks are taking just about anything. Beware while bringing in a ladyfish or trout, as the sharks will probably want them too, and you’ll find yourself with more fight than you bargained for. Charlotte Harbor is loving all the Tarpon and successful anglers are bobber jigging with shrimp and bait fish. PIERS/BRIDGES: at the 41 bridges, anglers will find Red Fish at the north and south ends. Tarpon are showing up at night and late in the day. Alligator Creek is producing some nice snapper in the channel (on shrimp) and some nice Red Fish at the mouth of the creek (on shrimp and pinfish). The Bay Shore Piers are good for Red Fish, Tarpon and an occasional Black Drum. Englewood Pier (Tom Adams Bridge) is getting its fair share of Snook (mostly at night and early morning) and Tarpon. Gilchrist Pier is reporting Jacks and Snook. The I-75 bridges (boat access only) have Snook, Tarpon and Black Drum, the bait of choice being pinfish or small bait fish on a live bait rig. Laishley Pier is not so hot during the day, but the Snook and Red Fish are definitely coming out after dark. Lemon Bay is good for plenty of red fish in the sand holes just inside the ICW on the flats. Cut bait like Ladyfish or Sardines seem to be the best bet. The Snook inside the bay are under the docks, and around the bridges. El Jobean Pier and the Myakka River are plum full of Tarpon, and they are just about everywhere. Port Charlotte Fishing Report
OFFSHORE: This week, the weather is back to fairly normal with clear, warm mornings and afternoon thunderstorms. From just offshore to about 15 miles out, anglers will hook up with snapper, Spanish Mackerel and those hard-fighting Bonita. Farther out at about 25 miles, anglers are reporting some decent sized Grouper fishing with cut bait in about 80 -150 feet of water. The wrecks and reefs are producing some nice Permit. The passes, such as Boca Grande Pass, Punta Rassa, Red Fish, Captiva, Little Gasparilla, Stump Pass and Venice Pass are all producing some very good sized Snapper, again using live shrimp on bottom rigs. As the water begins to cool down, more fish will move into the passes and the ICW (Inter-coastal Waterway).INSHORE: The good news is that Hurricane Erika did not dump as much rain on the Port Charlotte / Boca Grande area as first predicted. The bad news is that the rain from central Florida has brought murky waters to the Peace and Myakka Rivers and hence the ICW (Inter-Coastal Waterway) is also a bit murky. Still, patient anglers will catch plenty of Trout in 4-8 feet of water using bobbers with live shrimp for medium sized Trout and bobbers with Pinfish for larger Trout. Don’t be surprised, though, if a few Sharks end up on some lines while anglers are pulling in the Trout. Bokeelia and Jug Creek Shoals continue to provide plenty of action for Trout and Redfish on live Shrimp and smaller bait fish. Bull Bay and Turtle Bay continue to be good bets for Redfish near the bars to the entrances of both bays. Most anglers are using live shrimp and small bait fish both on bobbers and cast on circle hooks with no weight. The deep holes in Charlotte Harbor are still harboring (pun intended) some Tarpon, a few Sharks, and more than enough of those pesky Catfish. At Hobbs Point, Burnt Store, Pirate Harbor and Two Pines, anglers are catching Trout and Redfish, especially in the slots where these fish run back and forth with the changing tides. Lemon Bay seems to be stock full of Red Fish, and they are hitting Pinfish, cut Ladyfish, and small 1/4 -1/8 ounce gold spoons, the key word being GOLD!
PIERS/BRIDGES: At the 41 bridges, anglers are reporting some nice Trout and a few Tarpon from 25-60 lbs. Alligator Creek Reef (a concrete man-made reef) is hosting some Tarpon and Redfish which are hitting cut bait, Pilchards, and root beer colored lures. The Bay Shore Piers are hot for Snook at night and Shark during the day. Although Snook season is now open, be sure to follow license and limit regulations. Englewood Pier (Tom Adams Bridge) is seeing Tarpon and Snook, mostly at night. During the day, anglers can count on those ever present Mangrove Snapper, some being keepers. Gilchrist Pier lays claim to some pretty good-sized Jacks. Anglers who are sticking around at the I-75 bridges around sunset are hauling in some fun-sized tarpon. Anglers are claiming that Tarpon are “all over the Myakka River and Red Fish are hanging out in the trough by Hog Island.

Port Charlotte Fishing Report
OFFSHORE: Although rain has been predicted at about 60% daily for the next week or so, most of the rain has been coming in the afternoon and evening, so morning is generally a pretty good time to be out on the water. Many anglers are settling for a sure thing with Snapper at the passes while others are heading out to the 12-25 mile reef areas to fish on the bottom for Spanish Mackerel, Bonita, and Grouper. Those heading farther out are catching some mahi mahi and a few sailfish. With Hurricane Erika aiming at Florida and possibly the Gulf, things may get a little rough come Monday. It’s a good idea to watch those weather reports before heading out too far.INSHORE: Snook season begins on 12:01AM September 1, and everyone and his brother (or sister) is getting ready to catch some keepers in the 28-33 inch slot, especially if they have a valid fishing license and additional snook permit. Knowledgeable anglers will stock up on live Shrimp and Pinfish. Yes, the limit is one per person, but these fighting game fish are worth the effort. Don’t be surprised to see the boats lined up near the piers and other structures on the evening of August 31! For those anglers wanting to catch Redfish, the good news is that they are still hanging around The West Wall of the Peace River, Catfish Creek, Bull Bay and Turtle Bay. Successful anglers are catching some trophy reds on live shrimp under mangroves and cut bait along shallow channels near oyster bars and sand bars. Remember that Redfish spook rather easily, so it’s best to snook up (I mean sneak up) on them with a trolling motor or a push pole. Tarpon are just about everywhere near the bridges and in Charlotte Harbor. Sharks are also prevalent in the same areas, so don’t be surprised if what you think is a tarpon turns out to be a Shark! Spotted Sea Trout, prized for their tasty white meat, can be found here and there on the flats. The larger trout seem to be interested in pinfish, while the small to medium sized trout will take live shrimp and artificial shrimp connected by 2-3 feet of leader and a popping bobber. Anglers fishing for Trout will also hook into some of those awesome Ladyfish, known for their hard hits and hook-releasing jumps (easy catch and “release”).
PIERS/BRIDGES: The area piers are producing Mangrove Snapper, occasional Pompano, a few Jacks, and Black Drum. 41 and 75 bridges are seeing mostly Tarpon and Sharks. When Snook season opens on September 1, the action should be significant, especially in the morning and at night. Anglers who want catfish will have no trouble catching them on just about anything. Watch those barbs, though, as they are known to contain some nasty bacteria. Handle with care.
CANALS: Tarpon and Snook love to hide in the canals this time of year, but remember that Snook season doesn’t open until September 1 and the slot is 28-33 inches with the limit being 1 fish in that slot. Rotunda is reporting pretty good Bass fishing in the canals using Shiners.

Port Charlotte Fishing Report
OFFSHORE – This is the rainy season in southwest Florida, so be prepared for a shower or two, especially during the afternoon. Winds will be northeast for the next day or so at 10-15 mph. Snapper have moved out into the deeper water about 10 miles out and Grouper are plentiful at 12 to 25 miles out from Boca Grande using cut bait just off the bottom. Snapper and cobia are picking up a bit and closer to shore, spotted sea trout, pompano and flounder are taking live shrimp on bottom rigs with sliding hook and leader setups. Charters going out between 12 and 20 miles are coming back with some large grouper.INSHORE – When the wind picks up out in the Gulf, there will be more fishing in the Inter-coastal, especially at the West Wall of the Peace River, Turtle Bay, Bird Island and Three Sisters off Boca Grande Island. Live shrimp with three feet of leader is attracting spotted sea trout, silver trout, ladyfish, Spanish mackerel, blues, and an occasional redfish. Snook and redfish love to hang out under the mangroves, especially where there are oyster beds. Successful anglers are skipping live shrimp under the mangrove overhangs and also using bobbers with about 15 inches of leader and # 1 circle hooks. Out on the flats, in 6-9 feet of water, deadly combos are working when the water is fairly calm and Tsunami Zig Jig Pros are working when the surface is not so smooth. Most fish are hitting the jig lures as they drop, and it is not unusual for fish to hit the jig as soon as it enters the water. Large ladyfish, blues and mackerel are great fun on 7 foot rods with 12-15 pound test. Check the leader often to make sure it’s not weakened by these larger fish. Drifting over the flats works better than setting anchor, and watch for the color changes in the water, as dark indicates weeds and light indicates sandy bottom. Some of the larger fish wait at the edge of the weeds for something to come past them near the sandy bottom areas. When fish are there and then suddenly gone, drift back over the hot spot several times and there will be no disappointment.
PIERS/BRIDGES – At the Highway 41 bridges look for snook and tarpon in the early morning and again in the evening, cobia and small sharks during the day along with a few trout using shrimp or light brown colored lures and artificial shrimp. At the Bay Shore Piers, spotted and silver trout with an occasional shark. Gilchrist Pier is producing some jacks and sharks. Tom Adams Bridge in Englewood is the hot spot for mangrove snapper, many of the keepers at 11-14 inches and shrimp is what they seem to prefer right now. Again, as with all of the structures offering shade, snook are prevalent in the morning and the evening, so see if you can sneak a snook with live shrimp or white spinner bait. Laishley Pier is a good bet for cobia and Tarpon. The tarpon are hanging out in the deeper water beyond the end of the pier, so be prepared to cast out a ways and then get ready for a fight! El Jobean Pier has attracted its fair share of snapper, and they will hit live and frozen shrimp, again, using an oval sliding sinker with about 15-20 inches of leader. The mangrove snapper are a sure bet, especially if the kids are anxious to catch something. Don’t forget the sunblock, even when it seems like the clouds will hang around. That Florida sun has a way of popping out now and then, and the fishing is more fun if we don’t get burned.

CHARLOTTE HARBOR – There is lots of fresh water in the Harbor right now. The river is 7 feet above normal. And we are still due for rain this weekend! If you are going fishing go around the bridges at night time and target the Snook and Tarpon. If you would rather go for Redfish and Snook, you are going to want to go to the east side. Try fishing around Bull Bay, Pine Island, Boca Grande, get as close to the gulf as you can without actually getting into it – a lot of the good fishing has been flushed out to there.BAIT REPORT – The bait has been moving around a lot, but there are still Threadfins and Ladyfish if you can track them.

Venice and Port Charlotte Fishing Report
OFFSHORE: Trying to fish in the Gulf right now is more like trying to spit into the wind. A few have gone out in the inclement weather and report spending more time trying to fish than actually fishing. One wise, veteran fisherman’s advice: wait until the weather gets better before going offshore!INSHORE: Those fishermen and fisherwomen who have been brave enough to get out on the water with the current rainfall in southwest Florida (and who have working bilge pumps due to the rain-lol) have been rewarded with redfish, snook and a few cobia, many of which seem to be clustered around the islands. Shrimp and cut bait seem to be working best, especially since snook and redfish are attracted to scent as much as anything else. Remember that these game fish have sharp gills, so avoid slipping fingers into these gill areas after landing them. The cobia are still hanging out in the deeper water, and sharks seem to be quite active at this point. Spotted and silver trout are still hanging out in the flats, and there are reports of spadefish moving in during the recent storms. Like sheepshead, which will also move in near the structures when the weather cools, spadefish are not bad eating if one has the patience to clean them. Remember that light colored lures work best after the recent storms have stirred up the rivers emptying into the inter-coastal. All of the passes are wild with large snapper lying near the bottom. Get ready for a nice rod bend when these bigger snapper hit. You’ll swear you’ve hooked something huge!
PIERS/BRIDGES: At the Highway 41 bridges watch for snapper during the day and snook during the evening. Most anglers are using live shrimp and spinner baits, especially those that have some scent to them. The cobia have thinned out and are not as prevalent as they were last week. At the Bay Shore Piers, shark and cobia are keeping anglers busy. Nearby bait shops have reported increased return of snook, especially in the early morning and again just before nightfall. Turtle Bay has been a go to spot for many years, and when the fishing slows down in other nearby areas of the inter-coastal, those in the know head to this bay for snook and redfish which are currently pretty thick. These fish will move a bit farther from the land early in the morning and will then retreat to the mangroves when the sun comes out. A few anglers are catching redfish near the sand bars where the water begins to move with the shifting tide. Charlotte Harbor is producing some tarpon, but quite a few anglers are complaining about the number of catfish, which often register a minus five points on the fishing success scale. And do remember that catfish should be handled with care as they have barbs that are coated with a mucous that is no fun at all if it gets into a puncture wound. Tom Adams Bridge, which was recently completely refurbished, is still producing trout and snook. No one seems to know what has happened to the snapper that were really hot the week before. Medium shrimp are getting some nice trout, and some anglers are picking up snook alongside the pier with white spinner baits. The I-75 bridges (accessible by boat), like the 41 bridges, are offering tarpon and snook. Laishley Pier seems to be the spot for plenty of excitement this week. Several anglers have lost some pretty big fish, possibly sharks or large snook, so try this spot for a bit of adventure! El Jobean Pier is flush with shark and tarpon which have moved out of the mouth of the Myakka River and upstream. There are also reports of keeper pompano which are treasured for their wonderful white meat. Plus, for their size, they give a heck of a fight. A few fortunate anglers have brought in some pretty good sized black drum as well. Most of the pier anglers are using oval weights with sliding hooks and shrimp. Some of the larger fish are lurking off the end of the pier near the deep channel. Think about taking a drop net for those larger fish. It’s nearly impossible to haul a big fish all the way up to the pier deck!

Port Charlotte Fishing Report
OFFSHORE – Austin over at Fishin Franks Bait & Tackle has seen some really nice Red Grouper and Snapper. The Gag Grouper have been hit or miss, you might catch them, you might not, really depends on whether you have a spot or not. That being said the Snappers are nice, but Austin likes to avoid the public structures because there is bound to be competition there. Instead he goes out and finds the ledges, or swiss cheese bottom, or hard bottom and drops the usual bottom fishing baits – squid, cut bait, whatever you can sabiki on the way out.INSHORE – There are the usual fish inshore, but it has been really slow, and Austin recommends that you go visit Boca Grande if you are interested in that kind of fishing. There are a good number of Redfish and Trout down there, especially around Bull Bay.
BAIT REPORT – Bait is scattered, shouldn’t be hard to find if you chum.

Port Charlotte Fishing Report
OFFSHORE – Gag grouper just opened but Rob over at Fishin Franks Bait & Tackle hasn’t heard any positive feedback worth believing. A lot of people have been trolling for them and as soon as they hit one they mark the spot and start bottom fishing. You can troll pretty much any distance from the shore, but generally you want to stick to the reefs and ledges. Rob has been using depth specific lures like the Rapalas, specifically 25s and 30s. Bottom fishing is good right now for the Snapper. Lane, Vermilion, and Yellowtail are all biting strong on dropped down Squid or Shrimp. Tiny Pinfish work best for the big Mingos. There are also Bonita and Spanish Mackerel around but they have been moving in and out.INSHORE – Tarpon are unbelievable along the beaches and around Boca and little Gasparilla pass. Rob has been hearing about tons of em. They are starting to trickle into the Harbour, but they won’t be here till the hill tide is over. Right now the afternoon bite on an outgoing tide is the best for the Tarpon. They usually do there major feed between 2:00 and 7:00pm, so be ready for the frenzy. A lot of people have had success out at Little Gasparilla so try there.
BAIT REPORT – Very little bait right now. There is a ton of short Cobia in the Harbour mixed in with little Blacknose Sharks.

Port Charlotte Fishing Report
OFFSHORE: If you want to head offshore there is lots to be done by way of bottom fishing. There are lots of Grouper and Snapper out there. They are about 30 miles out. Anglers that are fishing out there are using Sardines, Mullet, and Squid cut bait and that is working pretty well. INSHORE: There are lots of Sharks around! The Snook are PHENOMENAL. You’ll find that the Trout are also coming in pretty strong. The tide is really important in this area. Over the weekend it is expected that the best times to fish the tide will be in the morning. A lot of people are heading over to the Pirate Harbour and the cutoff. If you have your heart set on fishing around the bridges, head there at night.
BAIT: There is some Whitebait out there but it is hard to find.

Port Charlotte Fishing Report
OFFSHORE – The trolling has been slow out there. However, if you go out about 15-20 miles you’ll find some Bonita with the odd Black Fin Tuna mixed in there. For the Bonita you’ll want to troll cedar plugs and small ¾ oz spoons. There are also some Spanish Mackerel out there. Bottom fishing is on fire! About 7-15 miles out. There you’ll find Lane Snapper and Vermillion Snapper and Mangrove Snapper Bottom fish has been on fire. A few legal red grouper in 70-80 feet of water. Shrimp and sardine are good bottom fishing bait.INSHORE – Inshore fishing has been excellent. Tarpon has been good along the beaches and the passes have been sick! They are hitting hard on Crabs. The bite in the morning is awesome in the pass, especially Boca Pass. In the afternoon try the beach and just outside the pass. This might slow down by the weekend though.
BAIT REPORT – Whitebait has been really tough to get inside the harbour. But you will find some at the usually markers but the most bait in by Jug Creek.

OFFSHORE – There are Sharks and Tarpon all over the place this week! You’ll find the Tarpon in the pass. If you want to troll for Dolphin, Wahoo and Tuna offshore about 45 miles out. Live bait usually does the trick for this type of fishing.INSHORE – Fish the tide when fishing inshore and make sure the water is always moving. The Shark, Tarpon, Snapper and snapper have been hot. There have also been a few Cobia and Sheepshead mixed. Shrimp is the go to bait for a lot of anglers in this area. Expect the Shark and Cobia bite to pick up in the near future.
BAIT FISH – There are some Pinfish, Greenbacks and Pilchards out there.
