Fernandina Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – Now that the Spring patterns have set in we aren’t really seeing any surprises or huge changes into this week. Redfish continue to be the most prominent fish in the area. They are feeding well and aren’t too picky about what they take. If you are able to bring some Mullet along, this is generally a good bet however Shrimp or similar artificial will work as well. Bigger fish can be caught towards St. Augustine. Generally we see Spotted Seatrout going hand in hand with many Redfish catches. Black Drum and Sheepshead are slowly heating up but they haven’t fully fired up just yet. Sheepshead are taking the usual baits as they hang out on structure. Anglers are also avoiding the Sharks that have been putting up an aggressive fight in the Atlantic Beach area. They are a lot of fun to fish for but can be annoying when they’re not the target of your bait, or should we say, their bait. Bluefish and Pompano are running the beach. Blues aren’t picky about what they take, you can throw anything from artificials and spoons to live bait. As Cobia move in following the rays anglers are fully embracing the Spring bite.

OFFSHORE – The offshore bite has been a bit hit or miss this week due to the recent wind and weather, which seems to be nothing new for anglers in this area. When you can make it offshore, rest assured you won’t have to go too far out. Dolphin have moved closer in and can be landed on the troll. Most anglers are focusing on the nearshore bottom bite as it is a bit more consistent. Limits of Sea Bass are easy catches along with a few bycatches of Cobia mixed in.

INSHORE – The Sheepshead bite is pretty good inshore. Under docks and bridges are the best place to find them. The Reds (Drum, Red) are around however there are more good sized Black Drum (Drum, Black) swimming inside. The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are on the edge of shell bars. They are small but biting well. There are also Big Bluefish are in the river.

OFFSHORE – Red Snapper (Snapper, Red) are on the bottom but are catch and release. Cobia aren’t far from the beach. Vermillion (Snapper, Vermillion) are appearing in the middle grounds close to 100 feet. The numbers are consistent. Enormous Bluefish are swimming about 10 miles offshore and are up to 15 pounds. A few have been caught inshore in the river as well. Way out the Mahi (Dolphin) bite is on fire. Wahoo are still around and Blackfin (Tuna, Blackfin) are biting well at the ledge. Sailfish (Billfish – Sailfish) have been sighted during the day going after Ballyhoo on a fast troll.

BAIT REPORT – Menhaden are being found from the beach.

Fernandina Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – There has been a nice variety of fish swimming inshore this week, with the most prominent bite coming from Sheepshead and Black Drum. If you are heading to the jetties, beaches, rivers or reefs you will have no trouble hooking up to either of these fish as the numbers are outstanding from Fernandina to Palm Coast. The KBY reef in particular has produced well.
From the surf we are seeing Pompano and Whiting running towards Atlantic Beach. They are swimming shallow so your best bet is to stay inside the rocks to find them. Inshore, the Trout are making a scattered appearance and if you are looking to target them the last hour of the outgoing tide will be the key time to fish. Flounder are just beginning to show up in bigger sizes along the shorelines towards St. Augustine. It looks like Spring has a great fishing season in store for us!

OFFSHORE – The weather was finally nice enough for a few days offshore this week. A bit of residual wind is still hanging around however the fish are hungry and ready to bite. This past week anglers were doing really well on Wahoo offshore. The recent tournament in St. Augustine has produced good numbers while high speed trolling at about 20 knots or trolling Ballyhoo during the day.
The bottom bite has been a bit more consistent in terms of landing fish. Red Snapper are providing good catch and release action. Triggerfish are also swimming the bottom. A bit closer in, Cobia have also been landed as anglers jig them up off the bottom as the water isn’t warm enough to cast to the rays yet.

Fernandina Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – Despite the unfavorable weather anglers in the area are still finding the typical, seasonal fish hanging around. When you can find a weather window there has been a surprisingly decent bite as Black Drum are really beginning to turn on. As usual, structure will be holding your best fish which is also good news as you can typically find some shelter from the wind around these spots. Creeks, jetties, holes, inlets, towers, bridges and the Sounds are going to be your key locations when targeting Drum from Fernandina to St. Augustine. Bait setups have been nothing new, and anything that has been successful so far this Winter will continue to produce into this week.
Mixed in with the Drum have been great catches of Sheepshead. You can find them in a lot of the same areas taking the same setups. Your typical Redfish and Trout have also been hooked into this week, however, the colder weather has set their early Spring bite back a bit. Although Reds are still in large schools, which means when you can hook onto one there are likely a few hanging around. Searching shallow mudflats that are holding heat will prove to be most successful. As usual Trout are swimming the rivers and creeks but if they are your main target you’ll have better luck heading to Nassau Sound.

OFFSHORE – We just can’t seem to catch a break in terms of weather this Spring. Mother nature has been teasing us with a few days of warm weather then hits us with yet another cold front. That being said, the nicer days have produced some Cobia this week. Anglers are jigging for them using either pink/white or chartreuse bucktails. Some anglers are adding a curly tail grub. To their setup for more success. The bite improves as we move South so if we can get some improved weather over the next few days we expect things to really fire up.

Fernandina Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – Although we are eager to see the Spring bite heat up and lead into Summer, the transition period has been a bit tough. With the lack of cold weather, many fish hadn’t schooled up and are still fairly scattered at this point. Redfish and Trout in particular are spread out right from Fernandina to St. Augustine. Numbers of Trout are increasing as we move South however sizes are still small and time will need to be spent finding them. For similar reasons the bigger Sheepshead continue to swim offshore and haven’t moved into the creeks. It’s no surprise that if you are targeting them a Fiddler Crab or Dead Shrimp is the key to a good fish. While Sheepshead are staying outside, warm water temperatures are bringing in an early bite of Flounder in the St. Augustine area. Drum are following close behind and anglers are finding the most success targeting them using a half Blue Crab. Mullet are beginning to show up in creeks and rivers. They are still small however this is a promising sign of a good run in the Spring.

OFFSHORE – 2017 has been a tough go so far for offshore anglers. Weather conditions continue to keep boats inside, so it has been difficult to gauge a deep water bite when few have actually made it out. Short weather windows have allowed those heading out of St. Augustine to target Wahoo as they begin to heat up with the upcoming full moon. This is also just in time for a few local Wahoo tournaments. As usual, stick with your dark colored lures for the best bite on the troll. Dolphin and Tuna should pick up following some more ideal weather. Closer in, determined anglers may find decent sizes of Cobia. They are not consistent but are a good option if seas are too rough farther out. Anglers willing to head North towards Fernandina can find a decent Sea Bass bite without heading to far off.

Amelia Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – Jetties and nearshore bottom structure offered some Sheepshead anglers a decent bite while some Flounder started to move back in. Some of the jetties are also hold Bull Reds and Black Drum, there are also a lot of small Redfish around. If Redfish are what you’re after, head down to Palm Coast where they are readily taking anything from Topwater plugs to live bait during the falling tide. The warmer than normal temperatures appear to have put a damper on the Trout fishing for most anglers. Despite the lackluster Trout bite, you can still have a good day of river fishing thanks to the arrival of Flounder. Try fishing Mud Minnows or Gulp on a jighead for them.

OFFSHORE – Reports of successful offshore trips private boats were few and far between from this week. There were a few charters that found Wahoo, Dolphin and Tuna. All three species of fish were caught around 65 miles out. Hopefully next week will provide a few more opportunities to get out.

Amelia Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – One thing we heard over and over again from various Captains and Bait Shops was that a little time spent fishing jetties in the region should yield some really good catches of Black Drum. The Sheepshead bite has still been pretty good for Anglers working inshore structures.
Most of the bigger Seatrout reported this week were from creeks and rivers mainly South of Amelia Island and North of Palm Coast. As for lures, Slayer Paddle Tails or Down South Lures were working well for anglers throwing artificials.

OFFSHORE – Cobia fishing has been good for anglers on Florida’s North East Coast. They haven’t made their way in on the Rays yet but are doing well in depths from 90-120 feet. Gulf Stream anglers welcomed a few days where they are we able to get offshore and troll for both Wahoo and Blackfin Tuna using weighted lures or Cedar Plugs.
Bottom fishing for Black Sea Bass was fairly decent anywhere from 8-25 miles. The farther North you are in Florida, the better the Sea Bass.
Off of Atlantic Beach there were some good catches of Porgy, Amberjack and Bar Jack along with some Beeliners. You will probably do well concentrating on fishing 120-140 feet of water.

Fernandina Beach / Amelia Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – Sheepshead have been a reliable catch from Fernandina down to just North of Palm Coast. The farther North you are the better the numbers and sizes have been. Nothing new to report as far as techniques and finding the fish goes. Stick to the usual inshore structures with anything from Crabs to small Shrimp.
Trout fishing in the region has been average. Small tidal creeks and rivers have been the best places to catch them. You should have no problem finding the odd, scattered Redfish while Trout fishing. It’s worth mentioning that the Redfish flats and popular spots in and around St. Augustine and Palm Coast will have heavy pressure do to the upcoming Florida Redfish Tournament.
Surf anglers will be offered up some opportunities to catch Whiting and some sporadic Bluefish. The beaches will be on and off from day to day so you may want to plan to move around if you find yourself on a slow bite.

OFFSHORE – The wind was definitely working against any of the boats trying to head offshore this week. Those who did make it out on the Northern reaches of the East coast were lucky if they were able to pull some Blackfin Tuna on the troll. It would have been a very good week to be a little further down the coast as anglers from Daytona and South were able to high speed troll for Wahoo at the stream when weather allowed passage offshore.

PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below for additional tips and tricks! OFFSHORE – When anglers can make it offshore they can expect one of the best King (Mackerel, King) bites at Brunswick 40 mile bottom. This is a great place to stock up on Cigar Minnows and troll them around the tower. Once the water cools down and conditions are favorable anglers will also target Dolphin, Sailfish (Billfish – Sailfish), Cobia and even some Barracuda (Barracuda, Great). Fishing the bottom with live Cigar Minnows or fresh Squid will be productive for Grouper (Grouper, Gag & Grouper, Red), Snapper (Snapper, Gray & Snapper, Mutton) and Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black). Search in roughly 50-70 ft around St. Mary’s rock jetties. Heading out to roughly 70 miles the bite for Sails, Wahoo, Dolphin, Marlin (Billfish – Marlin, Blue & Billfish – Marlin, White) and Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin) should be decent in 180 ft. Anglers will troll Ballyhoo or plastics. Amelia Island Now Pro Angler Team BAIT REPORT – During the fall season we generally see a massive fall Mullet migration. The R-5 Navy Tower is a great place to jig up Cigar Minnows. Leaders and Sinkers Bait & Tackle 904-321-2800

We expect to see it improve with the nice weather anticipated for the weekend. The closer reefs at 10-15 miles are getting great sizes of Sea Bass, Black using cut Squid for the most part. Fernandina Beach / Amelia Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – The fishing has been great in this area as of late. Starting with the backwater there has been a solid Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) on both live bait or artificials. Gulps and Egret Vudu Shrimp are both great choices. Reds (Drum, Red) are easier to catch as they are schooled up in the cooler water. The bite is consistent and doing well. They are hitting on the fly, bait or lures. They’re hungry and not picky. Sheepshead have been biting well in Fiddler Crabs. Anglers are catching them around jetties or pilings in great numbers as they move in to spawn. The inshore reefs are holding Sea Bass, Black in big sizes. Artificial reefs also have Sheepshead swimming them in roughly 54-68 ft of water. There are also some nice big Reds up to 40 lbs along with Snapper, Red. Keep in mind that they are closed. Quit Wishin’ let’s go fishin’!! OFFSHORE – The Triggerfish, Gray are biting well offshore this week. Anglers are scaling down their hooks and using a small piece of Squid to hook them. Grouper, Gag is also biting however they are only available for catch and release fishing. Snapper, Yellowtail are biting with Sea Bass, Black and they are loving butterfly jigs. Farther out we are seeing Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater) and Cobia on the wrecks in 100 ft. From 120-220 ft all the way to the ledge there are Dolphin, Wahoo and Tuna, Blackfin. The later two are more prominent this week. They can be caught on the high speed troll. A.C.Charters .Inc 904-261-9481 www.quitwishingletsgofishing.com

Fernandina Beach / Amelia Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – The weather has not produced ideal fishing conditions for most anglers this week. Those who can get out are reporting great bites of Sheepshead and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted). Now that the weather is cooling down we are seeing an increased bite and bigger sizes turn up so far. With the rough water it may be a good idea to consider live bait as the scent can help to attract the fish. Generally a Shrimp will work well for this. There have been no reports of Whiting (Kingfish, Northern & Kingfish, Southern) or Bluefish so far this week however we hope to see some turn up by the weekend. Fernandina Beach / Amelia Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – The weather has kept a lot of anglers off the water as the wind and rain has been way too harsh. The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Reds (Drum, Red) are doing well in the backwater on contender Grubs with a jig head or on live Shrimp. From the shore there are great sizes of Whiting (Kingfish, Northern & Kingfish, Southern) that are loving Shrimp either live or artificial this week. The Bluefish are biting in the same area but are preferring cut Mullet. They are not as thick as they were last week. There have also been reports of some Reds from this area as well. They generally prefer Shrimp too. Amelia Island Bait & Tackle Bait Shop 904-277-0775

Fernandina Beach / Amelia Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – There is a nice mixed bag of fish in the inshore this week. Reds (Drum, Red) are swimming along with Flounder, Winter and some big sizes of Trout (Seatrout, Spotted). Anglers have been using mud minnows and live Shrimp to hook them so far this week. OFFSHORE – There are some nice Sea Bass, Black hanging around the offshore so far this week. They are swimming above some nice Grouper, Gag as well just make sure you check your regulations to make sure they are open. There are absolutely tons of Snapper, Red in huge sizes swimming right now. They are sometimes eaten by Barracuda and Sharks as you reel them in however the ones that do manage to get away are turning up 15-20 lbs! Leaders and Sinkers Bait & Tackle 904-321-2800

Fernandina Beach / Amelia Island Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – We were all in for some fishing so we headed up the Amelia River and then tucked in to Jackstaff to fish an exposed oyster bank on the last of an outgoing tide with jigs and Shrimp. These anglers were making excellent casts (and into the wind) but we had no real bites after fishing a good stretch so we headed over to Seymore’s Pointe to fish some docks and this did the trick. After fishing for just a little while we “knocked the skunk off” the boat when he landed a hard fighting keeper sized Black “puppy” Drum (Drum, Black). There must have been a school down there because they all began to haul in fish. We hooked up and played his share of fish, casting and reeling in a few of his own. I think we had the biggest one, a 20 inches and we had a double on at one time. Then we spiced it up by landing a fat keeper sized Seatrout, Spotted. They put a good mess in the boat then we ran down to Broward Island to fish the still outgoing tide. They were getting nibbles here and there when we had a strong bite and, FISH ON! This was a big one! He played the big fish perfectly with his light 6’6 inch rod, battling the fish smoothly with the Stradicand 10lb braid. He worked it out from the bank then it went deep and into the current but we kept the pressure on and landed a big 25.5 inch Slot sized Redfish (Drum, Red), boy what a fish! We worked the area up and down and we completed a personal Slam when he put a keeper sized Sheepshead in the boat. Our last stop was back at Seymore’s Pointe where we wrapped things up when he caught another Slot Redfish, this one on a float rig and live Shrimp. It was cold and windy but the day turned out to be another great one to be fishing here at Amelia Island, Florida. Capt. Lawrence Piper Amelia Island Fishing Reports

Fernandina Beach / Amelia Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – There are plenty of fish in this area lately. There is a great Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) run that has begun now that the temperature has dropped just a little bit. There have also been reports of Reds (Drum, Red) and Sheepshead coming into the shallow water this week around the jetties. Sheephead are hitting Fiddler Crabs to no surprise while the Reds are going after live Shrimp. The color choice for artificials this week is electric chicken. This is working well for Trout in particular. Black/Gold mixtures in DOAs are also attractive to the Reds. Mud Minnows and dead Shrimp are showing some productivity if you can’t get your hands on anything else. BAIT REPORT – With the changing of the moon there have been no reports of live bait being caught so far this week. Stop by Arlington Bait and Tackle next week to support your local small business! Fernandina Beach / Amelia Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – The backwater has been host to some great sizes of Seatrout, Spotted and Reds (Drum, Red) around the docks this week. Most anglers have been throwing a 3.5 inch White Mullet artificial. They have found this to be extremely productive. As far as live bait goes anything has been working, especially cut Crab. A few Flounder (Flounder, Southern & Flounder, Gulp) have turned up as well on a berkley gulp. Best color this week is new penny with a green tail. OFFSHORE – Despite the unfavorable weather the fishing has been quite good in this area. Anglers were determined to get out this week and did not regret it. Reports of some great bottom fishing came in. Gags (Grouper, Gag) have been hitting along with some Yellowtail (Snapper, Yellowtail) earlier in the week prior to Grouper close. They have both been hitting the Boston Mackerel this week. The Sea Bass, Black have fired up this week as well. Squid have been working well to hook them this week. Wahoo and Billfish – Sailfish have also been reported from the offshore. They are pretty spotty as of right now but anglers throwing Ballyhoo can expect to reel in sizes around 25-30 lbs. BAIT REPORT – Mackerel and Squid are both running this week working well for offshore fish. Fernandina Beach / Amelia Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – There is quite a bit of action inshore this week. Huge Virginia Croakers (Croaker, Atlantic) are running. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) have been on fire this week. Anglers were float fishing with live Shrimp to hook them. Some fishermen are using dead Shrimp that are working just as well as long as they look alive and are hooked through the tail. Reds (Drum, Red) and Drum (Drum, Black) are coming up in range of sizes. They are taking dead Shrimp but are preferring Blue Crab. Sheepshead are swimming as well and the best bet for the bigger big sizes is the usual Fiddler Crabs. Anglers have been stocking up as the cold weather will drive them away. Blue Crabs are working too if they are cut up and hooked through the knuckles. BAIT REPORT – There have been some sporadic Mullet showing up on the inshore but they are becoming thinner this week. Fernandina Beach / Amelia Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – There is a solid bite inshore this week. Seatrout, Spotted have been swimming the backwaters while Reds (Drum, Red) are just about everywhere. They are both loving Egret bait, which is an artificial similar to a Shrimp. Mullet and live Shrimp are doing well too of course. The Flounder, Southern bite has calmed down this week and we have not had any reports of them being brought in. OFFSHORE – Sea Bass, Black are swimming in roughly 60-75 ft. of water and are hitting Squid. Almost anything you put in front of them, they will eat. There are also a few Jack, Amberjack Greater swimming in the same water. About 70 miles out at the stream anglers are seeing a few Dolphin and some Wahoo while high speed trolling dark colors. The Grouper, Gag bite has slowed down along with the Snapper, Yellowtail. BAIT REPORT – Mullet, Shrimp and even some Porgy and Menhaden have been running as the water temperature has not cooled off yet. A.C.Charters .Inc 904-261-9481 www.quitwishingletsgofishing.com

Fernandina Beach / Amelia Island

INSHORE – Along the beach the Bull Reds (Drum, Red) are everywhere and hitting anything live. The backwater has been host to lots of Seatrout, Spotted and some more Reds. They are chasing Minnow and Shrimp both running and artificials that look similar. Along the surf there are reports of Kingfish, Southern and Pompano, Florida swimming around. Sheepshead anglers are thrilled to see the great bite happening from along the rocks and structures in the river. They are loving live Fiddler Crabs on little leadheads. The Flounder, Southern have turned on and it is hard for anglers to keep their hook in the water near the jetties and backwater. The weather has been gorgeous and there is plenty of action in shore for angler to take advantage of. OFFSHORE – The wind has begun to die down and the fishing has been pretty great offshore. Snapper, Yellowtail have had an awesome bite along with the Grouper, Gag that are on fire right now. Although Snapper is closed anglers are still heading out for Grouper. Jack, Amberjack Greater have been hitting as well mixed in with both the Gags and Yellowtail. Farther out around 70 miles there is a great Wahoo bite as well. BAIT REPORT – There are no bait running to report at this time. Amelia Island Bait & Tackle Bait Shop 904-277-0775

Fernandina Beach / Amelia Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – Sheepshead have had a pretty good bite as of late on Fiddler Crabs on little leadheads. There have been reports of big Reds (Drum, Red) off the pier as well as lots of small Seatrout, Spotted. Anglers are using live Shrimp or Mud Minnows under a popping cork to hook Trout. OFFSHORE – It has still been pretty breezy in the farther out locations this week. There have been no reports of offshore fishing lately. If you do decide to head out in the next few days you can always consult our Tips feature that provides more information and suggestions or head into Leaders and Sinkers Bait & Tackle for an up to the minute report. BAIT REPORT – There’s not much to report on for bait. Blame it on the wind. Leaders and Sinkers Bait & Tackle 904-321-2800

OFFSHORE – There have not been many offshore reports this week as weather has not permitted anglers to get out on the water. We are expecting conditions to pick up once the weather lies down. If you decide to head out this weekend you can feel free to check out our Tips feature which provides additional information on the fish of your choice.

INSHORE – Inshore fishing has been really good lately. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are biting and are following the Mullet run right now. Redfish (Drum, Red) and Flounder (Flounder, Summer (Fluke) & Flounder, Southern) have been chasing Mullet as well. The big moon has risen the water levels in the backwater but the surf is also a great alternative as the bite has been very good lately as well.

BAIT REPORT – There has been a thick Mullet run and all the inshore fish are chasing them.

Fernandina Beach / Amelia Island Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – The Northeastern wind has deterred most anglers from heading offshore this week. We do not have any reports at this time however we are hoping to see wind conditions calm down for the weekend and hopefully offer up a little more fishing next week.

INSHORE – You will see a lot of small Trout being caught inshore this week. If you can bear the winds make your way to the creeks because they’re not moving far from here. Live Shrimp and Mud minnows are working really well. You will also see lots of Flounder popping up behind the Fort and they are a nice size. It is worth it if the conditions lay down and you can make your way out. Anglers are also gearing up for the Sheepshead and cannot wait for some better weather conditions, however it is way too windy at this point.

BAIT REPORT – There is absolutely no bait showing right now. The wind has caused this however if you do decide to make your way out this weekend you can always consult our Tips section by tapping the fish of your choice to view suggestions, alternative bait options and ‘how to’s.

INSHORE – The Redfish are on right now. There are huge Reds at the pier at Fort Clinch. They’re still catching Redfish and Trout in Egan’s Creek when the weather permits. Between the wind and rain, fishing has been tough at times. For bait, they’re using live Shrimp and Mud Minnows which are available at Leaders and Sinkers Bait & Tackle.

BAIT REPORT – Due to the Freshwater coming in, there hasn’t been much bait running in the area.

Fernandina Beach / Amelia Island Fishing Report

Offshore- As far as bait is concerned, Mullet and Pogies are the choice this week. The Kingfish are plentiful; in fact, during a recent tournament, someone hauled in a 47 lb Kingfish! The top 10 fish caught were 30 lbs and above. Some of the tournament anglers also headed out to deeper water where they caught Wahoo while trolling live Pogies. The upcoming weather for the weekend looks very good in the morning with a 50% change of a shower or two in the afternoon.

Inshore- Unfortunately, the inshore—often referred to as the backwaters—is not doing all that well because of the high water temperature. Most of the fish have moved out into the cooler water around the jetties. Most anglers are targeting Flounder and Redfish in the shallower water near oyster beds and docks. Finger Mullet and live Shrimp are producing most of the fish. The best artificial lures seem to be the lighter colored, and root beer colored plastic grubs.

Fernandina Beach / Amelia Island Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – The biggest fish trolling right now are the Kingfish, Barracuda, and Sharks. The Sharks are a welcome sight if you are fishing for them, otherwise they can ruin your day. Bottom fishing for Triggers and Grouper has been good, but most noticeably is that there is lots of Sea Bass – nice ones too. BFC Reef is especially good for the Sea Bass in about 60-70 foot of water. Fresh local squid is your best bet, and Leaders and Sinkers Bait & Tackle carries some. Squid is nice because it stays on the hook.

INSHORE – Captain Don at Leaders and Sinkers Bait & Tackle mentioned that the Redfish and Trout are really good right now. In the surf you are going to find bull Whiting and Pompano starting to show up. Try fishing back behind Fort Clinch or by the Pier, or campground on the riverside.

BAIT REPORT – Most people are chasing small bait if they see anything. Even the pogies are small.

Leaders and Sinkers Bait & Tackle also offers Charter fishing. They have four different charter boats and great captains. They’re good boys. If you are just looking for a place to launch your boat, there is a free boat ramp out back that Captain Don assures me is the best in the county because he keeps it clean himself.

Amelia Island / Fernandina Beach Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Trolling for Kingfish and Cobia right now is good. There have also been some Tarpon offshore. Your best bet is to go out trolling if you want to catch and keep fish. If you are ok with catch and release there is plenty of fish biting at the bottom – problem is they are all Red Snapper. I don’t think I need to say anymore.

INSHORE – Surf fishing is good right now. There are lots of Whiting, Trout, and Bluefish. The Backwater is kind of slow this time of year because it gets really hot. If you are interested in going there consider going really early in the morning. Pier fishing and fishing at the south end has been good. April over at Amelia Island Bait & Tackle has been hearing about a lot of nice fish caught at the George Crady bridge – especially Flounder. Most people are fishing with a mud minnow on a jig head, or using live mullet on an egg sinker.

BAIT REPORT – Mullet are here early this year, and there are still some Pogies out there.

Fernandina Beach / Amelia Island Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – If you are trolling offshore the main fish you should target are the Kingfish and Cobia. Drag around a few cigar minnows or ballyhoo and cover a good stretch of area. If you are going to go far out, find a weedline and try your luck for the Dolphin. Bottom fishing is also good right now, lots of Grouper, Triggerfish, and some big Flounder on the reefs. You want something that will stick to the hook – and Squid is the best for that. Boston Mackerel is also really good bait when bottom fishing.

INSHORE – According to Captain Don at Leaders and Sinkers Bait & Tackle the inshore fishing is real hot right now. If you want it and it bites, it’s on right now. The key to successful fishing is going to be targeting a specific fish, and working over your spots. The Flounder, Redfish, and Trout are going to be dominant and can’t pass up Shrimp whether they are dead, alive, or Gulp.

BAIT REPORT – There is a good deal of bait around, find a pod and then stick to ‘em.

Fernandina Beach / Amelia Island Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – The bottom fishing for Grouper has been good; however Theresa over at Leaders and Sinkers Bait & Tackle says they have just been plagued with Shark and Barracuda. Everyone is catching Red Snapper out there, and of course far away in some cramped office building some bureaucrat is laughing hysterically. Theresa hasn’t heard much about trolling but there was a few Kingfish caught lately.

INSHORE – If you manage to hit a good spot it is entirely possible to bring in 90 whiting at a time – Theresa knows; she saw someone do it! Mixed in there are regular Reds, big Reds, Trout, Sheepshead, and Spots. The Spots are fun to catch especially if you have kids. A good place to go fishing would be the jetties and behind the fort. Where Theresa’s shop is located on Egans creek the fishing has been excellent. She even caught a Flounder herself yesterday. The bait you want to be using is Mud Minnows and Shrimp for pretty much everything. But for the Whiting you want to be using pieces of dead shrimp. On the beach there is quite a few Trout and Pompano.

BAIT REPORT – There are a lot of bait pods out there you just have to get lucky and find them. Around the buoys is good but there are sharks out there, and there was a guy who was bringing up a loaded Sabiki only to get hit by a shark! They’ll take anything!

Feel free to visit Theresa anytime, they have a free boat ramp out back and there location on Egans creek is a great place for kayakers and other boat fishermen alike.

Fernandina Beach/ Amelia Island

OFFSHORE : Offshore the Grouper bite is really good. They are doing well on any live bait you can get your hands on. If trolling is more your style then head out about 40 miles to 120 feet of water to troll for Dolphin and King Mackerel. They are doing really well on Cigar Minnows and Ballyhoo when trolled.

INSHORE: Inshore there are some Gag Grouper and Red Snapper around the Jetties. There you’ll also find Tarpon and Puppy Drum and some big Jack Crevales. They are biting well on Pogies and Menhaden. Off the beaches anglers are catching Pompano using Shrimp and Sand Fleas. There they are also catching Speckled Trout using silver and black top water plugs. The best time to fish is on the incoming tide.

BAIT: There are some Pogies and Menhaden around.

Fernandina Beach / Amelia Island Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – This week the fishing is very similar to last week. There are some Wahoo and Tuna. If you’d rather bottom fish you’ll find lots of Grouper and Snapper. Snapper season is closed though so you’ll need to throw those back. The Cobia are in too. The bottom fishing is going well on Cigar Minnows, Boston Mackerel and Squid. New this week are Sharks, Sharks and more Sharks.

INSHORE – Around the Jetties you’ll find Flounder, Cobia and Tarpon and a few Sheepshead. You’ll also find some huge Redfish that are too big to keep. You’ll also find some Trout. The grass beds and flats are also particularly productive. All of these fish are mainly biting on live Shrimp and Mud Minnows.

BAIT REPORT – The bait pods are showing up but and the Pogies are especially thick.

OFFSHORE – Offshore there is some trolling to be done for Wahoo and Tuna. In terms of bottom fishing the Grouper and Snapper are biting despite the closed Snapper season. The Cobia have also made their way in. Bottom fishing is going well for people using Cigar Minnows, Squid or Boston Mackerel.

INSHORE – Tarpon should be making their way here soon. The Trout have been biting well on live Shrimp. Flounder have been on fire! Fish for them using has Mud Minnows. Tide has a huge effect on your fishing success, so always remember not to fish the slack. The flats have been great for Red fishing.

Fernandina Beach / Amelia Island Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Captain Jim over at Amelia Island Bait & Tackle was literally one foot off his boat when I called him this morning. He said that the Grouper and Snapper are both off the hook. However, the Snapper are closed, and while they might make great game you can’t keep them. He also stresses the importance of abiding by the limit and the closure dates. Expect to find the Kingfish and Cobia starting to run soon. There is also a good Barracuda bite. If you decide that you want to go trolling instead of bottom fishing then you should try to target the Dolphin. Captain Jim likes to use live Cigar Minnows or Boston Mackerel for almost everything. Both bottom fishing and trolling are great right now.

INSHORE – There are big Trout in the backwater. Other fish you might want to target include Redfish and Flounder. The Flounder are turning on around the jetties, expect to find some Tarpon and bull Reds mixed in. They love to eat live Shrimp and Pogies. They tend to get quite aggressive during early morning, and as always, make sure that you fish when the water is moving.

BAIT REPORT – Captain Jim says that he has seen a lot of bait. Pretty much everything is out there from Pogies, Greenies, Threadfins, to Cigar minnows.

Fernandina Beach / Amelia Island Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Captain Allen over at A.C. Charters has enjoyed a great Cobia run recently. The bottom fishing has been phenomenal. Way out in the blue water there is a good Marlin bite from 250-400 feet. They love to chew on the Ballyhoo and Iland lures. 20-30 Miles out is good fishing if you plan on targeting Kings, Amberjacks, and Black Fin. If you are going to troll, troll a Ballyhoo or Pogy, if not find a reef or wreck and deep drop over top of them. The weather will be great leading up to this weekend, but the weatherman is calling for rain on Saturday and Sunday.

INSHORE – Around the jetties from the beach to about 12-15 miles Captain Allen has been seeing a lot of Jack around the Pogy pods. Topwater plugs works well for all sorts of inshore fishing. The bay and rivers are flooded with redfish and trout. A few Snook and Bluefish has moved in, and some Tarpon have been found at the jetties. The best time to fish is when you can, but that being said, Captain Allen prefers an incoming tide.

BAIT REPORT – The Pogies are thick around the beaches till about 5 miles out, you should have no problem finding them and being able to use them for bigger game.
