Niantic Fishing Report
INSHORE – During the Winter season the migratory fish have left the area and the variety of fish available in State waters are slim. Cod, Atlantic is the main species to keep while winter fishing but they are found mostly in Rhode Island saltwater. Inshore anglers can fish for holdover Striper (Bass, Striped) in many of the tidal rivers. We are looking forward to the Spring run. As we find varying weather conditions from day to day we encourage all anglers to stay safe and warm when fishing. This is a great opportunity to check out some of the current Pro Angler App features along with new additions coming soon. We look forward to bringing you more great Pro Reports when the bite fires back up.

INSHORE – During the Winter season the migratory fish have left the area and the variety of fish available in State waters are slim. At this time of year Stripers (Bass, Striped) move inland towards Black Hall River. Mile Creek and Connecticut Rivers should be holding resident fish as well. Most winter fishing for holdover Stripers happens in the Housatonic River. As we find varying weather conditions from day to day we encourage all anglers to stay safe and warm when fishing. Niantic Fishing Report
INSHORE – This week we expect to see a continuation of the bite last week. Bass (Bass, Striped) will be higher up in the rivers. There may still be a few lingering around the mouths of the Housatonic, Connecticut and Thames rivers. The bigger sizes will still be caught at night. Soft plastics mimicking Herring and Eels will do well. Live Herring is your best bet. You can find Herring in the water all winter. Find the herring to find the fish. To the South we continue to see some Cod (Cod, Atlantic) turn up when the weather allows anglers to get out. Head just South of Block Island for the best bite. We hope to see this continue into next week.

INSHORE – Scalloping is challenging this week. The Cod (Cod, Atlantic) fishing is hit or miss depending on whether you can get out with the recent conditions. Anglers are heading South of Block Island for the best bite. Some anglers are heading out to do some ice fishing in freshwater. There are some schoolies (Bass, Striped) swimming around the Housatonic this week. MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM THE PRO ANGLER TEAM! INSHORE – Schoolie Stripers (Bass, Striped) are tough. Fish seem to be coming up during the daylight only. They seem to turn on and off depending on location. They come up hot when they stop to feed so you may need to cover some ground and look for the birds. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal more tips and tricks on how to catch!
OFFSHORE – Cod is the biggest target for anglers this week. Cod (Cod, Atlantic) and Black Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are both doing well for that matter. Shark’s Ledge is a good place to fish, especially with some of the nice weather windows we’ve had. The bottom has been loaded with Sea Bass. Anglers are getting doubles of 20 inch fish. They are taking jigs in 60 ft of water around the humps. Around Sharks Ledge, Clam is working better to hook Cod and Sea Bass than jigs
BAIT REPORT – There is a lot of bait in the water this week.

East Beach and Watch Hill are still holding fish. The Cod (Cod, Atlantic) Fishing around Block Island has been great. Everyone is hooking up to fish. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) and Tautog are biting as well. Winter Flounder (Flounder, Winter) have been caught around Green Point. They can be caught on Sea Worms. You can also cast for them from shore around the airport. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal more tips and tricks on how to catch!

INSHORE – There are tons of schoolie Bass moving in along the beaches in Fairfield around Seaside Park and Bridgeport. The Housatonic River is loaded with Bass to 35 lbs. Eels and soft plastics are working well. There are still some Bluefish around but most have moved out with the dip in temperature lately. The anglers fishing from shore are catching a lot of schoolies (Bass, Striped) and Shad. The runs of shad are coming in on the daytime incoming tide. Bridgeport Harbor is good for Tautog along with the walls as is New Haven Harbor and Stamford Harbor to the West. Sunken Island is also producing fish. You can also search the rock piles and wrecks in deeper water around 30-50 ft. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are mixed in but slowing down. Towards New London the Connecticut River and Thames River are holding tons of Bass. Anglers are throwing Plum Island Swim Baits for the best bite. This will work well in the Housatonic River as well. These baits are outstanding. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!
OFFSHORE – Anglers are doing well on Cod (Cod, Atlantic) and Pollock this week. Tuna reports are slow. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

INSHORE – A lot of Striped Bass (Bass, Striped) and Bluefish are coming through on their fall run. Water is still warm and there are tons of Albacore (Bonito, Little Tunny) running as well! Stripers are up to 46 lbs off the beach. The bite is good up and down East Beach and over towards Watch Hill Reef and Sugar Reef. Bass and Bluefish are good on the reefs. Tautog are biting well into this week. Anglers are getting easy limits although the water has been rough. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal more tips and tricks on how to catch!
OFFSHORE – Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) are up in the Long Island Sound area. We expect migrating Bluefin in the next few days. Block Island Sound has been great for them as well. We’ve had a lot of anglers popping in to buy 80lb braid. Cast or troll for them using spreader bars. You can also live line Bunker to hook them as well.

INSHORE – The bite has mostly been Blackfish (Tautog) at this time. Generally Green Crabs are best to hook them. There are still plenty of Bluefish chasing bait in the river. They have also been caught in the canal. If you can get through the Bluefish there are Stripers (Bass, Striped) in the river as well.
BAIT REPORT – Most of the bait has been in the CT River as opposed to the Sound.

INSHORE – Blackfish (Tautog) is the name of the game! Scup and Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are turning up incidentally. Anglers are fishing structure to find them. Albies (Bontio, Little Tunny) are here and there. Plenty of Bluefish can be hooked as well. Stripers (Bass, Striped) can be caught from shore as well as the closer boats. For surf casters, the fish aren’t difficult to find however the sizes are the tough part. If you put some time in you’ll find something of size. Plugs and bait are your best bet during the morning and evening at the top of the tide. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!
OFFSHORE – There has been a ton of big Bluefish around. Fish up to 19lbs are being caught consistently at sundown on topwaters. Lots of Schoolie Bass (Bass, Striped) are mixed in with the keepers. Blackfish (Tautog) are pretty solid this week. Even shore anglers are hooking them around jetties while boaters are working the boulder fields. Tog around 7-8lbs are common while using Green Crabs. Albies (Bonito, Little Tunny) are a bit slower than they have been. Epoxy Jigs are still going to be your best bet when targeting them. INSHORE – The False Albacore (Bonito, Little Tunny) fishing has been on fire. Anglers are seeing easy double digits. They are right into the Niantic River. Blackfish (Tautog) have a lot of pressure on them this week however there are plenty of fish to be had. Striped Bass (Bass, Striped) are eating during specific phases of the tide. Target the flood tide when it drops out and isn’t quite slack for the best bite. The bait will be there before it strengthens. Bluefish are great on topwater to Hatchets. INSHORE – Locally we are seeing great False Albacore (Bonito, Little Tunny) in Niantic Bay, Watch Hill and Harkness area. Ground fishing for Sea Bass has been decent. Blackfish aren’t open yet however those who are testing the water are catching well on jigs. Bluefish are in all the rips and can be caught on light tackle while targeting Albies.
