Description
The Weakfish has a slender body characterized by it’s lack of chin barbels, underbite and two large teeth. It’s coloration can range from a darkish green through to a bluish-green with some purple and golden colouring. The top of the fish has black spots that are tightly spaced, as opposed to the wider spaced spots on the related seatrout. In addition to this Weakfish can be found to have a black border on the end of its tongue and scales that don’t extend onto the fins.
Habitat & Behaviour
The Weakfish makes it's home in shallow waters during the summer and deeper waters during the winter months. Sometimes found in bays, inlets, estuaries salt water portions of rivers and creeks. A weakfish stalks it's prey, edging towards it before lunging with and wide-open mouth.
Natural Prey
The Weakfish feeds upon menhaden, herring, anchovies, croaker, spot, shrimp, and crabs.
Handling Tips
Definitely do not put your fingers in the mouth! Delicate fish. If you’re catching smaller ones try not to handle too much. If you have to handle them with a wet rag so you don’t wipe slime off – that would damage them.
