Shell Point/Parris Island Fishing Report
April 5, 2017
Shell Point/Parris Island
INSHORE – The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) fishing has been good, especially on topwaters. They are just about everywhere, but haven’t made it oceanside yet. Fishing rivers has been most productive. They are biting just about any time of day if you have some water movement and can find a place where they are holding up. Redfish (Drum, Red) are typical of the season. They aren’t as aggressive at this point as they are more scattered. There are still a few schools but not nearly as large as the Winter time. Chartreuse and White will be your best colors to throw this week. Flounder (Flounder, Southern) have also been caught here and there. We hope to see this continue into the weekend.
BAIT REPORT – There has been a ton of bait (Menhaden & Mullet) swimming this week.

Shell Point/Parris Island Fishing Report
INSHORE – Anyone that wants to do a little inshore day fishing and just wants a tug on their line well, the Whiting (Kingfish, Southern) bite is on wide open! And the inshore fishermen are catching some nice Spotted Seatrout (Seatrout, Spotted), Redfish (Drum, Red) and Flounder (Flounder, Southern)! So the bottom line is if one fish doesn’t find your bait offering interesting another might! Please remember that to catch a Whiting you need to lightly set the hook between this fish’s first and second hit. And I am sorry to say that there is much time between its one two bite patterns. It’s best described as a quick two drill bite event. The Whiting hits and then hits the bait again in quick session. If you don’t set the hook in between hits, you might as well reel in and reload! Because your bait will be missing! The good news is once you get it, you got it!
OFFSHORE – This week the artificial reefs are holding some serious Sheepshead fish. Purple Back Fiddlers on a customized Carolina bottom rig is the ticket. Anglers are finding it only takes one cast. Farther out there has also been catches of White Grunt (Grunt, White), Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) and Hog Nose Snapper
BAIT REPORT – As far as bait, I always suggest when available to purchase/catch some live Shrimp, because all fish will eat it! While fishing with live Shrimp I suggest keeping any leftovers included parts and pieces, because this makes for great bait when target whiting! Best place to store this bait is in an empty water bottle. All you need is small pieces of shrimp, small hooks; small sinkers, light tackle, and give them time to eat.

INSHORE – Speckled Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Redfish (Drum, Red) continue to turn up into this week. Bull Reds and cold water Sharks (Dogfish, Spiny) are showing up nearshore. Fishing with cut bait through a moving tide has been most productive.

Shell Point/Parris Island Fishing Report
INSHORE – The Speckled Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) on live Shrimp is killer during the day this week. They are in deeper water around the marsh edges and bluffs. There are a lot of Sheepshead being caught on Fiddler Crabs along with some nice Black Drum (Drum, Black) around. Search structure on the inside to find them. Sheepshead are inshore on structure and off the shore swimming the nearshore reefs.
OFFSHORE – It has still been a bit rough to get outside however when anglers can get to the ledge they were high speed trolling for Wahoo during the day. Not many fish have been caught as of late. We are still expecting things to pick up once we see more ideal conditions for the season.
BAIT REPORT – Bait is beginning to show up. Mullet has moved in. Shrimp are in the deep holes. Search roughly 35 feet of water with a deep hole net.

Shell Point/Parris Island Fishing Report
INSHORE – The fish were responding well to the warmer weather so the recent front will turn them off for a few days. The drop in temperature shuts the metabolism down in the Drum (Drum, Red) so they won’t be feeding. They will be quite lethargic. Winds are up to 30 mph. We hope to see things clear up for the weekend.

Shell Point/Parris Island Fishing Report
INSHORE – The warm Winter has enabled anglers to fish all year. The Spring bite is a little bit slower but there are still plenty of Redfish (Drum, Red) eating. Schools are beginning to break up slightly so anglers are changing tactics to find them. This doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll need to cover more water yet. There are still some Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) around, we were lucky to avoid the Trout kill that can happen with fluctuating weather, numbers are still good.

INSHORE – Black Drum (Drum, Black) have moved in recently. Redfish (Drum, Red) are mixed in. Reports on Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are quiet. Both artificial and live bait are working well to hook them. Most of the action is coming from the morning bite. We hope to see this continue into the weekend. We expect that with all the recent warm weather the Spring bite should arrive in no time!

INSHORE – Inshore has been good and the weather is warming up. The fish are a lot more active than they would be during this time of year. They are still in their winter patterns, schooled up on the flats. Live bait, artificials and flies are working well while fishing the moving tide. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are consistently biting with the nice weather.

INSHORE – Redfish (Drum, Red) and small Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are turning up during the day this week. Bigger sizes are taking cut bait on the bottom. The smaller fish have been preferring Mud Minnows. A high slack tide is the key time to fish. As the tide moves out smaller sizes are showing up around the creek mouths.

INSHORE – Reds (Drum, Red) are still hanging around this week. The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) bite is slacking off as the temperature cools. A few scattered Flounder (Flounder, Southern) have also been caught. Search the creeks and backwater using Mud Minnows and Shrimp. Reds are the most prominent bite. You might even find a Black Drum (Drum, Black). You can catch Sheepshead if you know of some inshore structure. Nearshore the big Bull Redfish and Black Drum are biting well. Search around 40 ft or less.
BAIT REPORT – The Shrimp are quite scattered this week. You may be better of buying bait.

INSHORE – Speckled Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) have been hot as of late. They are in the creek mouths over oyster shells as well as moving water over oyster points. They are preferring artificials this week. You can sight cast for Redfish (Drum, Red) on the low tide. This is very productive using Berkley Gulp or Zman. DOA Shrimp is also working well. Shrimp and Crab patterns on the fly rod is a great alternative. This bite should hold steady into the new year pending any unexpected weather. Anywhere back in the creeks along the South end and around Harbortown or Baynard Cove are great. Live bait is your best bet to hook them. Shrimp or Mullet are the preference. Bull Reds are on the reefs and along Savannah Shipping Channel. There hasn’t been much on Sheepshead.

INSHORE – The wind and cool temperature has slowed the bite down a bit this week. The Redfish (Drum, Red) are decent. They are swimming in roughly a foot of water. You can sight cast for them. Mud Minnows and Shrimp are your best bet to hook them. We’ve been catching a lot of fish on flies lately too. Crab and Shrimp patterns are best. The cooler water is clearer so Bonefish patterns are productive in natural colors. The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are the best we have seen in years. There are lots of fish up 24 inches in the backcountry. Baystreet Outfitters is fully stocked for the Christmas season with tons of new products

Minnows or Shrimp under a cork are productive along with soft plastics such as Gulp Shrimp or anything that looks like a minnow or shrimp. INSHORE – Inshore fishing is great right now. The fish are beginning to settle into the Winter routine as the water cleans up. Fish will begin to school up on the flats. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are taking Zman Trout Tricks. There has been a huge emphasis on topwater for bigger Trout in the low light, early morning or late afternoons. MirrOlure She Dog is a great topwater choice. The big Bull Reds (Drum, Red) are off the beach a few miles. Look for Gannets and Loons diving. Cast bait or drop bucktail jigs to find them. Southern Drawl Outfitters is closed Thursday and open on Friday!
OFFSHORE – Wahoo are biting but you’ll have to go far out to the gulf stream to find them.

As the water warms up, the fishing is getting better, especially for sharks such as Blacktips (Shark, Black Tip), Sharpnose (Shark, Atlantic Sharpnose). Anglers are having the best luck using Shrimp and Whiting to catch Sharks in the area. Stingrays (Stingray, Atlantic) also seem to be benefiting from the warmer water and are out in full force. Whiting (Kingfish, Southern) are also biting, and anglers seem to be having the best luck catching them with bait such as Shrimp or small strips of Squid and Mullet.
BAIT REPORT – Shrimp numbers are really starting to pick up in close.

Shrimp and shrimp imitations are working best to hook most of the fish. They are the hottest bait, especially around the grass flats.

INSHORE – The Cobia are running really well even though the season is closed. They are catch and release but continue to be fun to catch. There are both great numbers and sizes. The Redfish (Drum, Red) are steady. They are schooled up on the low tide and anglers are doing well. On the high end the tailing fish have been great as well. It’s been a good start to the tailing Redfish season. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are also being caught. There have been no reports of Drum (Drum, Black) yet. A lot of focus is still on the Cobia. Everything looks good this week.
BAIT REPORT – Baitfish are showing up in the river. Porgy and Greenies (Pilchards) are swimming.

INSHORE – The Cobia have not heated up but Sharks and Black Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) have been the main focus. They are just off the beach and you won’t have to go too far to find them. There are also some big Reds (Drum, Red) that are hot this week as well. The sizes are varied so far. Live or fresh Shrimp are the key to hooking them. We expect this bite to continue into the weekend.

INSHORE – Fishing has been great when the wind isn’t up. The recent weather has made fishing difficult. We are seeing lots of active fish when the weather allows that are loving Crab so far. Drum (Drum, Black), Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Redfish (Drum, Red) continue to bite this week. We hope to see conditions settle down so anglers can get back on the water for the weekend.

INSHORE – We are seeing a lot of Red Drum (Drum, Red) and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and the occasional Drum (Drum, Black). Generally Shrimp is a great bait to use to catch any of these species. Crab will also work well for the Drum. The sizes are fair and the bite is consistent. We expect these conditions to carry into the weekend.
OFFSHORE – The Bonnetheads (Shark, Bonnethead) are picking up and there are some Blacktips (Shark, Blacktip) here and there. Anglers will be heading out to search for Wahoo soon but they have not been too active out from this area.

INSHORE – Bull Reds and some Redfish (Drum, Red) are turning up inshore so far. This has been the main focus as things have not quite heated up for the Spring bite yet. Generally they prefer to eat live or fresh Shrimp this time of year. Similar artificials such as a Vudu Shrimp by Egret will be productive. We hope to see this continue into the weekend.
OFFSHORE – Recently things have been a bit slow. We are seeing some Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) from offshore. Anglers are searching from structures around 100 ft to find them. Squid has been the most productive bait this week. The wind has made things tough for anglers to get out this week.

INSHORE – The biggest news has been the tailing Redfish (Drum, Red) which are almost a month early. Anglers are really excited about this and fishing has been good. They are moving into the flats and breaking out of the bigger schools. They are feeding on crabs in shallow water this week so similar bait or artificials will do well. Things have been really windy as of late however we hope to see things die down a bit so anglers can get out.

INSHORE – Things have slowed down a touch but the grass is picking up so the fish will be doing well. Fishing is picking up during the higher tide and the water is warming up so bait is moving back in. Reds (Drum, Red) continue to fish well along with the Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) which are sitting a bit deeper. The Reds are schooling up on the flats this week as the water gets warmer. The water is clear and the bite is consistent so far. The sizes are varied however the soft plastics such as Vudu Shrimp by Egret seem to be working for them all.
BAIT REPORT – We are starting to see some bait come in this week.

INSHORE – Fishing has been extremely good the past few days as we have finally seen some nice weather. The hot bite has been the Reds (Drum, Red) and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted). The best bite is tide dependent however the morning is better than the afternoon. INSHORE – There haven’t been great conditions with the wind and rain the past few days although we do expect things to improve mid week and into the weekend. This should have the water settle down and anglers will be able to get back on the water. We expect to see some big schools of Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Reds (Drum, Red) hitting soft plastics. A black or dark lure his going to produce the best silhouette on the cloudy days while a lighter color on a brighter day will be your best bet to hook them. Small fish imitators are the number one choice this week. They are still fairly active at this point. The afternoon bite during high tide is the most productive so far. The low tides may be able to hold the fish in some areas for the weekend bite.

INSHORE – Typically this time of year the fish are schooling up however the water is clear. This means if you get on a fish there are likely plenty around and you can catch some great numbers. They are also easily spooked so the best things to throw is light tackle in the morning during the low tide. A Carolina rig thrown past the fish and reeled slowly is a good bet. It’s really important to lengthen your leader. This is the key. Small flies will also be productive. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are still being caught in the pockets and holes. They are also hitting deeper jigs that are presented slow. The Trout are mostly turning up in the backwater creeks. This is a great time of year to book a trip with Capt. The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) bite has slowed down this week. The surf is producing Whiting (Kingfish, Northern & Kingfish, Southern) along with some Stingrays (Stingray, Southern). INSHORE – The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) bite has been really good on soft plastics such as a berkley gulp or live Mud Minnows or Shrimp under a popping cork. They are mostly smaller fish at this point but there are some keeper sizes mixed in too. Reds (Drum, Red) have been great so far this week although the Flounder, Southern bite has slowed down due to the colder weather. There are still some that can be found on the flats however. The best fishing is produced on the falling or rising tide. Not many anglers are heading out during a low tide. This bite is expected to continue throughout the week.

So far New Penny has been a great color for artificials. When the water is clear anglers are using grays or natural colors in Shrimp or Paddle Tails on a jighead.

INSHORE – The shallower water has been pretty active lately despite the rain making the water more colorful. Anglers are seeing mostly Reds (Drum, Red) on both low and high tide. Low is providing lots of schools and smaller sizes chasing Shrimp. It is still expected that there will be floating Reds and tailing Reds in the grass during high tide however they will be more difficult to find. The cooler weather has also brought an improved Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) bite. They are hitting Shrimp as well, or similar artificials such as a DOA Shrimp, berkley gulp paddle tail and split tail to match the water color. Top colors have been dark, like new penny. A lot of anglers are using a quarter ounce jig to stay weedless. Conditions should stay pretty consistent until season close barring any major weather developments.
BAIT REPORT – There are still some Finger Mullet running however they will move out pretty soon for the winter as Mud Minnows become more prominent. OF NOTE – Baystreet Outfitters provides anglers with both light tackle and fly gear as well as plenty of talented guides for your charter adventures.
