Santa Cruz Fishing Report

INSHORE – Earlier this week the Salmon (Salmon, Chinook) fishing was a little better for some anglers who fished the Pajaro side of the Moss Landing canyon. The area from 36’49/121’53 to 36’51/121’53 is still producing 10-20 pound Salmon. There were a few nice fish caught at 36’52/121’56. The area near Mulligan Hill and Soldiers Club has some Salmon. There have been reports of good Salmon fishing in 175-200 feet of water near the Cement Ship. It seems like the majority of the Salmon are being caught in shallow water or near the canyon edges. The Salmon are being caught 70-150 feet down. The Rock fishing was slow due to the new swell. The wind was down all morning and it looks good for the next few days. By the end of the week the Salmon fishing was good again today in Santa Cruz and Moss Landing. There were early limits caught at the Slide in 160-220 feet of water. The numbers around 36’51/121’57 and 36’52/121’56 were good in the morning. The area near Moss Landing at 36’50/121’53 and 36’49/121’52 produced some limits. The majority of the fish were caught 75-150 feet down trolling. The best bet was the Krippled Anchovies behind U.V. Hot Spots. There were some good scores of Salmon caught with Purple Haze Kajikis, Gold Tom Mack’s, and Watermelon Apexes. The wind stayed down all day and the swell dropped. N.O.A.A. is calling for small craft Thursday afternoon but the morning may be ok. The Rock fishing (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Red & Rockfish, Canary & Rockfish, Olive) is still slow but there were some nice fish caught at South Rock.

Santa Cruz Fishing Report

INSHORE – As anglers wait for Rockfish to open we anticipate that things are heating up nicely. In the meantime, Sanddab (Sanddab, Pacific) and Surfperch (Surfperch, Barred & Surfperch, Redtail) are the main fish to target during this time of year. If you are fishing for them, Bloodworms, Gulp Worms or Lugworms are generally your best bet in shallower, warm areas during the day. We hope to continue to see nice weather until then the Spring bite fires up.

Santa Cruz Fishing Report

INSHORE – The weather has kept many anglers off the water the past few days. Those who were able to find some weather windows headed out during the day for Sanddab (Sanddab, Pacific) in great numbers along with a decent amount of Dungeness Crab. The Sanddab generally prefer small bait such as lugworms, gulp worms or bloodworms.

INSHORE – When you can dodge the weather there are still some Surfperch (Surfperch, Barred) taking Gulp worms and Lugworms. If you’re lucky you can also take advantage of the Bass (Bass, Striped) that are peppered throughout the bay. Head out with swim baits and be prepared to put some time in if you’re targeting them.

Santa Cruz Fishing Report

INSHORE – The upcoming weather may throw off some of the bite however at this time there has still been some fish to catch this week. The Surfperch (Surfperch, Barred) are still biting on the beach. Gulp Worms and Lugworms continue to hook them. Scattered Bass (Bass, Striped) are still turning up in the bay however you will have to put some time in to find them. Some of the Bass can be caught right from the beach to the South of Santa Cruz. Generally Swimbaits are your best bet to catch them.

Santa Cruz Fishing Report

INSHORE – We caught up with Virg’s Bait and Tackle for a fishing report this week, and as you may have heard – and felt, the weather has been way too unfavorable for anglers to be hitting the water from shore or from boats. During the breaks anglers can Surfperch (Surfperch, Barred) on Grubs and Berkley Gulp Worms. Shrimp is a great alternative. Anglers have also been crabbing. There are flash flood warnings, high wind and huge waves. We encourage all anglers to take this time to check out some of the great Pro Angler App features and prepare for their next trip when condition are more ideal. We hope to see things improve soon!

INSHORE – A few Stripers (Bass, Striped) are turning up near Manresa. They are best during the early morning bite. There are also some reports around Rio del Mar however the recent swells are keeping anglers out of this area. We expect this bite to continue into the weekend.

OFFSHORE – There has been a low pressure cold front passing through the area lately. There are still some Salmon (Salmon, Chinook) that can be caught on the East edge of the Soquel Hole and by the yellow buoy by Mulligan Hill. On a nice day anglers are getting their limits fairly quickly. They are likely slow due to the weather. They are in roughly 180-200 ft of water. Trolling Watermelon Krippled Anchovies has been productive. Krocodiles and red R.S.Ks will also work. The Rockfishing (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Black & Bocaccio & Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Greenspotted & Bocaccio) is improving as the season progresses. Search the Natural Bridges in 130 ft.

INSHORE – Rockfishing (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper) has been great so far the past week. Anglers are searching the West side in roughly 50-100 ft of water. The lighthouse has been a great area to find them. Lingcod can be found around Natural Bridges. The wind has kept a lot of anglers on the inside so far this week however once things lie down we will see boaters head back out. The Salmon (Salmon, Chinook) has been slow this week although the weather is finally calmer. We expect this is why the fish were not biting. The fish that have been caught were great sizes and were caught from the Soquel Hole on the East side. Look in roughly 150-220 ft. Krippled Anchovies and Blue Kajikis will do well to hook them. We are still seeing Stripers (Bass, Striped) during the incoming tide from Manresa to Marina. The sizes are small so far but we expect them to increase as the Spring pattern sets in.

They are being found around Soquel Hole, with some of the nice ones being caught 200-230 ft down. Glow Krippled Anchovies, Green FBRs and Watermelon Apexes are all working well to catch them. The winds are high and expected to stay up although we hope to see things calm down just in time for the weekend. Rockfishing (Rockfish, Vermillion & Lingcod & Rockfish, Copper) has been slow as well. Search the natural bridges and the mile Buoy to find them. INSHORE – Despite the wind in the area as of late we are seeing anglers target Salmon (Salmon, Chinook) now that they are open. Silver Krippled Anchovies from 30-100 ft down has been the best method to find them. The East edge of the Soquel Hole is a great spot in particular. If you are Rockfishing (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Olive & Lingcod) this week we are seeing the best results from the Mile Buoy and South Rock, you don’t have to travel too far to find them. Halibut (Halibut, Pacific) are beginning to show up however they are not quite consistent and the sizes are small yet. Bass (Bass, Striped) continue to bite consistently this week. Anyone still Crabbing will find them all over the bay. The focus has been mainly on the inshore this week however we hope to see the Bluefin (Tuna, Bluefin) show up very soon!

INSHORE – Surfperch, Barred, fishing has been great so far this week which is just in time for the upcoming tournament. The gulp sandworm in camo has been a great lure to catch them. Sand Crabs or grubs are always a great bet as well. Rip Tides on the beach is the spot to fish for them. The deeper holes will be holding the nicer fish. The Perch Derby is next weekend to benefit the Salmon and Trout Project. Check it out!

OFFSHORE – The Crab fishing is really good this year now that it is open for sport anglers. They can be found from 120-220 ft of water. They are all over. INSHORE – The weather has been decent so far this week but there has been some swells and some wind deterring anglers from getting on the water. Anglers are heading out to the bay to target Sanddabs (Sanddab, Pacific), Sole (Sole, Petrale), Flounder (Flounder, Starry), Bass (Sea Bass, White & Bass, Striper) as well as Halibut, Pacific. They can all be found however some are more plentiful than others so anglers will have to put their time in for some of them. From the bay shore anglers can still target Rockfish, Cabezon and Lingcod which can be found from the piers and rocks as well. The surf is producing Surfperch, Barred for anglers using gulp Sandworms. Soft Shell Sand Crabs are usually an all time favorite as well during the latter half of the incoming tide.

INSHORE – We expect to see a bit better weather this week so anglers have an easier time hitting the water. Most boat based anglers are searching for Sanddab, Pacific, Flounder (Flounder, Starry), White Sea Bass (Sea Bass, White), Stripers (Bass, Striped) and Halibut, Pacific as they are all open year round. The Stripers are being caught mostly in the surf incidentally. A lot of anglers do not target them until the Spring when the bite and size improves however there are still some swimming. We expect to see an increased Surfperch, Barred bite any time as the weather cools down. They will be hitting gulp sandworms, grubs, prawn and bloodworms. Ghost Shrimp will also be a great bet along with Soft Shell Crabs. The latter half of the incoming tide will produce the best sizes. The rocks are holding Cabezon, Rockfish and Lingcod (although they are out of season right now) can be caught and released. Fishing from the piers anglers can expect to see some Perch and Mackerel (Mackerel, Pacific) this week that are turning up in consistently decent sizes.

Santa Cruz Fishing Report

INSHORE – The weather has begun to settle down in this area and anglers are finally heading out for some Rockfishing in the bay, although it is closed for boat based fishing. Anglers are looking for Lingcod, Cabezon and various Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish Starry). Anglers are hooking some Rockfish off the piers along with some Lingcod, Cabezon and Perch as well. They are mostly on the West side and up. Squid, Shrimp and scented artificials have provided the best bite. There are some Halibut, Pacific, Stripers, and even a few Mackerel, Pacific turning up off the piers as well however they are all fairly small and nothing in a keeper size yet. The surf is producing some Stripers (Bass, Striped) however the season is pretty much closed so the reports are spotty at best. The most productive time to target them has been dawn and dusk on the incoming tide. They have also been found throughout the beaches this week. Topwater lures, bucktail jigs and pencil poppers seem to be working best. There have also been some Surfperch, Barred caught from the beach on gulps, grubs, and blood worms. Ghost Shrimp and crabs are working great as well. The later half of the incoming tides will have the best fish. Look for the riptides and deeper troughs to set your baits.

Santa Cruz Fishing Report

INSHORE – There are still some Yellowtail being caught in the offshore this week. The bite is consistent and the sizes are fair. The Lingcod bite has slowed down significantly, while anglers are hitting Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Starry) on day and a half trips. These are not the target for most anglers as they are solely catch and release at this point.

Santa Cruz Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Happy New Year, and welcome to 2016. Be sure to secure a new 2016 fishing license before taking that rod and reel out. Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Greenspotted & Rockfish, Copper) and Lingcod season is over and we presume will open again in May. In the meantime, charter boats from Monterey and Santa Cruz will be running wintertime trips for Sanddab, Pacific and Mackerel, Pacific and surfcasters will be prowling the beaches in search of feisty Surfperch, Barred. Fishing was actually pretty good during these last weeks of the year. The fishing was great this weekend for Rockfish and Lings near the local rock piles. There were nice Blues (Rockfish, Blue) and Blacks (Rockfish, Black) caught near Natural Bridges. The wind and swells were down making for good conditions. The high tide in the morning made the harbor easy to get in and out of unless you stayed out too late.

Santa Cruz Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – The unfavorable weather has had most anglers off the water so far this week. The swells, wind, and rain have mixed up the fish. A few reports have come in of Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Lingcod) biting near South Rock, Natural Bridges and Davenport. Structures are a great find this week. There were also some nice Sanddab, Pacific coming in a swell near Pajaro, in roughly 100 ft of water. Of course this bite has slowed down with the storm and we hope it continues once conditions become favorable. Crab fishing is still closed this week as anglers eagerly await new information. Santa Cruz Fishing Report

INSHORE – The weather has been hit and miss in this area lately however the fishing has continued to do well despite the conditions. The storms have improved the Surf fishing having created nice sandbars this week. Surfperch, Barred are plentiful in this area and are hitting Ghost Shrimp and camo gulp worms. The nearshore is holding some Anchovies that are keeping the Rockfish (Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Vermillion) biting. The Lingcod bite has been fantastic all over the place from Franklin Point to Davenport. Bridges and structures have also been turning up great keeper sizes. Our sources have even reported a few Halibut, Pacific caught near Capitola and Franklin Point as well. It is a great week to be fishing.

BAIT REPORT – Mackerel and Anchovy are both running right now and working well as nearshore bait. Crab season is still on hold. Bayside Marine will keep you posted or call:831-649-2883! 20% OFF ALL CRAB POTS AND GEAR!

Santa Cruz Fishing Report

INSHORE – The inshore fishing has been slow this week although there have been a few reports that have come in. Rockfish (Lingcod & Rockfish, Starry) have been swimming and preferring live bait such as Squid or Minnows. Similar artificials are producing results however live is way better. There has been one report of a Halibut, Pacific reeled in but that was a surprise for our sources. The wind and rain has kept a lot of anglers inside however we are hoping it will clear up for the holiday weekend.

OFFSHORE – There is not a whole lot of action happening in the offshore this week. Although the weather has improved the water temperature has cooled so a lot of the bite has slowed down. There have not been any reports from the area this week however if anglers are hitting the water for the holidays they can always check out our Tips feature which provides additional information and suggestions to help improve the catch. Bayside Marine can provide a great up to the minute fishing report so anglers know exactly what to expect on the water.

BAIT REPORT – There are tons of Mackerel right below the birds. They are around 4 Mile and Capicola. Early morning is the best time to get them.

Santa Cruz Fishing Report

INSHORE – There are tons of Mackerel, Pacific swimming off the pier along with a lot of Lingcod and Rock Cod (Rockfish, Starry) that are starting to hit the boats again. Big Lings have been hooked using live Mackerel or little Rock Cods. They can be found in rocky bottom areas where anglers will have no trouble hitting fish. Down by Capicola there have even been reports of a few Bass, Barred Sand which anglers can get low drifting with a laser minnow or whole live Mackerel.

OFFSHORE – There is not a whole lot happening this week as the weather has just settled from last week’s front. The Tuna, Bluefin are biting at the 12 mile mark. There have also been Bonito, Pacific swimming in front of the harbor using laser minnows while drifting.

BAIT REPORT – Mackerel are running and can be easily caught on a Sabiki rig.

Santa Cruz Fishing Report

INSHORE – The fishing in this area has been pretty slow inshore as well. The weather has the water and the fish pretty mixed up. It has been extremely difficult to catch both Lingcod and various Rockfish. There have been lots of Mackerel, Pacific swimming alongside a ton of Bonito, Pacific right outside the harbor. Anglers are using lazer minnows for the Mackerel and Mackerel for Bonito.

OFFSHORE – Unfavorable weather conditions have made going offshore a difficult feat this week. Anglers have mainly decided to stay inshore at this point. Fishermen who decide to head out when conditions lie down can always consult our Tips feature which provides additional information and suggestions that could help improve the catch. Alternatively anglers can head into Santa Cruz Boat Rentals for an up to the minute fishing report.

BAIT REPORT – Mackerel are still running at this time and are working well for offshore bait.

Santa Cruz Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – The weather has been tough although the bite in this area has been good lately. Bottom fishing has been great as lots of Lingcod reeling in up to 12lbs and Rockcod has been phenomenal with everyone hitting their limit using live bait as well. Crab season has been shut down so anglers are adjusting.

Santa Cruz Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – It has been hit and miss offshore in the past few weeks in terms of Cod but things are looking up! There are tons of Lingcod so big they are snapping lines. To hook one of these be sure to use a Live bait as the Lingcod love something swimming by them. In the morning it is a good idea to use a lighter weight to compliment the calmer water, where, in the afternoon a heavier weight keeps the bait down to take on stronger waves. Sea Bass are also around so keep that in mind as you are setting up your lines.

INSHORE – If you are fishing for enormous Perch this is the place to be. 5 lb fish have been reported using Grubs or Bloodworms in the surf. If you are fishing the pier in the past few weeks you may also find strong groups of Halibut. Use anything live such as Squid which is working very well. They will be in around 20-30 ft of water and a great spot is right next to Santa Cruz Boat Rentals.

BAIT REPORT – There are lots of live bait running right now which are perfect for both offshore and inshore fishing.

OF NOTE – Santa Cruz Boats will set you up with a great boat for only $30/hour or $120/day. Take advantage of these great prices before the season is over!
