Washington Fishing Report

INSHORE – Speckled Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) fishing has been good in the lower Neuse River with a few Reds (Drum, Red) and Stripers mixed in. Anglers are fishing primarily towards Oriental. Towards New Bern the Striper (Bass, Striped) fishing has been excellent. Soft plastics under a cork or on a leadhead are the main lures this week. Some topwater are successful too. Up river the whites and chartreuses are more productive with the off color water. The lower, clear water has been successful for natural colors. This has been a great way to kick off the season this year! Pro Angler App Users – Tap a fish listed below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

INSHORE – Striped Bass (Bass, Striped) have been doing well. The numbers are consistent. Specks (Seatrout, Spotted) are coming out of the creeks. The sizes are nice as they move to spawn in deeper water. Slot puppy Drum (Drum, Red) are beginning to come in. Flounder (Flounder, Southern) are also making an appearance. They are early and already up to 25 inches. Water temperatures are up with the mild Winter so fishing is looking great. INSHORE – Despite the recent weather the Striper (Bass, Striped) bite continues to be hot into this week. They are on fire in Neuse River especially. The weather doesn’t seem to have affected them too much and the numbers are great. Neuse River Bait and Tackle recommends a DOA jerk shad in Pearl, which matches the bait run farther up in the river. We hope to see this continue once the weather clears up. Pro Angler App Users – Tap a fish listed below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

Washington Fishing Report

INSHORE – Another tough week of fishing for anglers around here! The wind, rain and cold prevail yet again and the bite has been difficult. Over the weekend we were seeing some fish caught towards Buxton. Puppy Drum (Drum, Red) and Bluefish) were the only notable catches. Drum (Drum, Black) and Sharks were also swimming around the point. Towards Frisco and Hatteras the Sea Mullet (Kingfish, Southern) and Bluefish were also decent. More recently the Puppy Drum bite has increased around the boat ramps. You may find a few Puffers (Puffer, Smooth) mixed in too, especially around Frisco. Conditions are still hit or miss however we hope to see things clear up very soon. INSHORE – The Speckled Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) bite has been good as they come out of the creeks and make their way towards the Pamlico Sound and the deeper pockets to spawn. You can catch some big, nice fish as they move through. Cigar style Popping Corks with Shrimp imitations have been working well for Trout. MR17 MirrOlures in custom colors are a good alternative. Vudu Shrimp have been particularly great under a popping cork or alone. Puppy Drum (Drum, Red) are beginning to come in as the water has been warm. They are showing up in the lower end out of Neuse river in the creeks around structure, stumps and docks. Striped Bass (Bass, Striped) fishing has been great as they make their way up river to spawn in the current. They are following Shad to eat. After the water warms up a bit more the ocean Flounder (Flounder, Winter) bite should heat up as well. Pro Angler App Users – Tap a fish listed below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

BAIT REPORT – American and Hickory Shad have been good and should stay plentiful for the next few weeks as they make their way up to spawn.

INSHORE – To the North Puppy Drum (Drum, Red) and Black Drum (Drum, Black) are still swimming the beach. Gulp baits are doing well to hook them. Frozen Shrimp is also a good choice to put on a hook. Bluefish are small but they have arrived. This means the water is heating up. Everything is typical of the Winter season.

INSHORE – Winter fishing is producing Speckled Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) in great numbers. We have transitioned into Striped Bass (Bass, Striped) as well as some freshwater fishing for Crappie, Largemouth and even some American Shad in the upper Neuse River. The key is to find current. Stripers are holding up on deep ledges taking soft plastics or deep diving baits on the troll. Shad Rigs like the Nungesser are working well too. Anglers are catching Largemouth and Crappie incidentally in the same areas. Specks are slowing down but still holding good numbers, especially towards the Sound. Puppy Drum (Drum, Red) and the occasional Flounder (Flounder, Southern) are mixed in. A few Stripers can be caught as well. Up river towards the Tar River is productive. Anglers are using plastics with a 3/8 or half ounce jig on the bottom. Morning or late evening is your best time to fish. INSHORE – Not a lot has changed from last week. When anglers are able to hit the water we are seeing Specks (Seatrout, Spotted) turn up into this week. You may have to put some time in to find them. Search the banks for the best bite along with rivers and around the creeks. As usual, MirrOlure 17MR are working well. After you cast them, a slow retrieve is key. The mid morning bite has still produced the best fish as it warms the shallower water. This is expected to remain consistent through to the end of the year.

INSHORE – Through the Sound Speckled Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) at the jetties in the morning and evening with a few Puppy Drum (Drum, Red)mixed in. Lots of Puppy Drum around the pier in Avon. Sea Mullet (Kingfish, Southern), Bluefish, and Trout reported in Frisco. A dozen or so big Drum at the point in the evening. There has been a few big Drum caught at the point already this morning as well. Southerly winds the next few days should hold good Drum fishing. To the South side the Trout and Drum are on fire this week. They are doing well chasing the Spearing. Pro Angler App Users – Tap a fish listed below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – Offshore is a bit slow as the fishing is difficult and the boats heading out are few and far between. There are still a few Wahoo and Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin) biting on the troll. There is surprisingly a good number of Sailfish (Billfish – Sailfish) being caught as well. They are fishing to the South around the rise and Swansboro Hole. Plenty of Triggerfish (Triggerfish, Gray) are on the bottom which is typical of the time of year. Search roughly 50 ft of water and deeper. Closer inshore there are still False Albacore (Bonito, Little Tunny) inshore. Bluefin (Tuna, Bluefin) are biting as well even though you can’t keep them.

BAIT REPORT – There aren’t much Shad along the beach but there are plenty of inshore Glass Minnows (Spearing).

INSHORE – Spanish Macks (Mackerel, Spanish) and Bluefish are biting well around the inlets, along the beaches and around most nearshore artificial reefs. The easiest way to catch them is to troll small spoons, such as size 0 and 00 Clarkspoons, behind small planers or trolling sinkers. Some folks carry spinning rods rigged with Got-Cha and other similar jigs to cast to breaking Spanish. Spanish like their baits moving quickly, while Bluefish prefer to feed on slower moving baits. If you’re catching one and would like the other, speed up or slow down accordingly. Pier fishermen are catching a lot of Spanish Mackerel and Bluefish. Got-Cha jigs have been the lure of choice for most fishermen and be sure to get the ones with gold hooks. Bait fishermen are also catching some Bluefish, Pompano (Pompano, Florida), Drum (Drum, Black) and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) from the piers. Pier fishermen have been catching King Mackerel (Mackerel, King) and Cobia for several weeks at the Oak Island piers and with bait moving up the beaches this action could begin along the rest of the state at any time. The water looks pretty good, there is bait and the water temps are in the high 60s to low 70s, so it could happen at any time. Cobia have been cruising the beaches and being caught along Bogue and Shackleford Banks, so it’s only a matter of time before one is caught by a pier fishermen. Speaking of cobia, boat fishermen are catching them well. It’s a rare day that Cobia aren’t weighed at marinas and tackle shops from Calabash to Oregon Inlet. Most of them make the 40 pound minimum for an outstanding catch citation too. One huge cobia of 116 pounds has been caught at Cape Hatteras. Cobia fishermen are sight fishing and casting jigs and Eels, plus floating live baits and eels and soaking baits on the bottom. Be prepared for crowds as the word is spreading and there are lots of fishermen chasing Cobia. Fishing inside the inlets isn’t as hot as the ocean bite, but there were a few surges this week and it appears to be improving. There were several good reports of flounder and it’s still early for them. Many fishermen are catching Black Drum and there are occasional good catches of Red Drum (Drum, Red) and Speckled Trout (Seatrout, Spotted). I didn’t hear of any citation Flounder (Flounder, Southern) or Specks this week, but there were some 3 and 4 pounders caught and that’s pretty good. Black Drum and Red Drum will pick up pieces of Shrimp and cut bait fairly well. Sometimes Flounder and Trout pick these up too, but it’s not as common. Some fishermen are also catching Specks, Flounder, and Puppy Drum using lures. Soft plastics are the most commonly used lures, but they will also hit hard baits and weedless spoons. The water has warmed enough inshore fish have spread throughout the river, bays and creeks. Now is a good time to chase them as the water temp is in their comfortable range and they should bite when you find them. When the fish are spread as these are right now, be sure to check all of the areas you caught them in previous springs and summers. They’ve got to be somewhere. There are also Flounder (Flounder, Southern) on the nearshore artificial reefs and hard bottom areas. These fish will eat live baits, but you can cover much more bottom by jigging vertically with soft plastics on 2 to 4 ounce bucktails and drifting. The water over these spots is deep enough you can leave the outboard running to control your drift and hold a location once you locate them. You might also want to drift a live bait near the surface for Spanish mackerel or Bluefish.

OFFSHORE – Offshore fishing is very good and fishermen are looking to make the run at any opportunity. Unfortunately, the sea conditions just refuse to lay out to nice for any length of time. Fishermen in larger boats are making the trip regularly, but fishermen in smaller boats are often left deciding if the catch is worth making the run. While there are better days each week, the conditions generally hover right around 15 knot winds and 3-4 foot seas, which might not sound like much, but is pretty rough for a 50 mile ride in 23 to 30 foot center console. Offshore fishing is hot, especially with gaffer Dolphin. If you find a pod of Dolphin they will be hungry and most of them will be gaffers, so there are a lot of Mahi-Mahi fillets to enjoy later. Wahoo and Tuna (Tuna, Blackfin), mostly Blackfins, are also biting for Gulf Stream trollers. Billfish are showing up too – and not just at the Gulf Stream. My neighbor, Tony Richardson, caught one last Saturday at the Horseshoe off Southport. This is early for a sail to be that close in, but it’s becoming that kind of year. Offshore bottom fishing is also very good. Fishermen are catching Grouper (Grouper, Gag), Beeliners (Snapper, Vermillion), Triggerfish (Triggerfish, Gray), Black Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black), Grunts (Grunt, White) and Porgys. There are also a few African Pompano (Pompano, African) and Hog Snappers (Hogfish) being caught offshore near Cape Fear. Some bottom fishermen are also drifting light lines behind their boats in the current and picking up an occasional King (Mackerel, King), Dolphin or Cobia. King Mackerel action has started well off the southern N.C. Coast and should be spreading up the coast at any time. Kings are being caught off the Oak Island piers and offshore. Once off the beach, the bite begins in about 50 feet of water and continues out to around 100n feet. Kings have been hitting spoons, sea witches with strips, swimming plugs and frozen cigar minnows. Live baits have been a little hard to find some days, but the kings welcome them too.

BAIT REPORT – Most inside fishermen have been catching better using live baits. Mud Minnows are pretty thick in the backs of small creeks and most tackle shops have them. Live Shrimp are a little harder to come by, but will get fish to bite when they let mud minnows pass. This early in the season, live Shrimp are probably best found at tackle shops. A few Mullet minnows are showing in the backs of creeks. They are still small, but can be caught using 1/4 inch mesh cast nets and seines. Killifish are around the inlets and the marsh islands inside inlets.

INSHORE – Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are starting to show up well this week. Specks and Flounder (Flounder, Southern) and in the Sound down to the East as well. They are starting to pick up. Anglers on the beach are finding Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) and Cobia out of Morehead and up to Hatteras. The big action is on the outside. As the bait is here the numbers are increasing. A few Stripers (Bass, Striped) are in the river but they are catch and release. We expect this to continue into the weekend.

INSHORE – To tough Long Islander veterans came to town to learn and fish our waters. Been planned for several months and weather sucked. Canked day one but roughed it out dodging lightning and getting soaked a couple of times on day 2. Started early with a nice 19 slot Drum (Drum, Red) for Torre on DOA Deadly Combo rigged with DOA CAL curl tail. Then it was to my porch for coffee and wait the lightning show out. Back out and chased small Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) around providing a bend in Torre and Mikes rod for some fun. Had 2 very small – about 8 inch Trout that were hungry for DOA Deadly Combo also. May be signs of some future for us. They got to see our fishery in some of the worst condition; West winds, stormy and poor stock status. They enjoyed enough they are coming back to try the Big Drum though. Filleted the Drum for them and arranged for a restaurant to cook it for them. Fresh at best. They enjoyed their stay at Neuse River Suites as well with Stuart providing great services.

INSHORE – The Sound hasn’t changed a whole lot. There are Flounder (Flounder, Southern) here and there. Nicer Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are beginning to show up. Most are still fairly small. Puppy Drum (Drum, Red) are the main thing being caught in the creeks so far. Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) and Cobia are right around the corner. The Blues (Bluefish) are moving into the Sound and the Neuse River so the Spanish and Cobia should be right behind. There has been a bit of an influx however the weather has been a bit touchy so the fish have been a bit mixed up.

OFFSHORE – The Wahoo are coming in very well this week. They have been catching like crazy. The smaller Mahi (Dolphin) are also being caught. There are a few good sizes here and there however most are small at this point. The closer to the end of May the better the fishing will be.

Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) and Bluefish will be moving out of the Sound and the ocean into Neuse River. Cobia will be showing up in the Sound as well very shortly. They will love Menhaden bait balls and jigs.

OFFSHORE – There are tons of finger Mullet swimming this week. Mud Minnows are plentiful this week as well.

There are a few short Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) in the sound however they are not the target of most anglers due to sizes. We hope to see conditions improve soon. INSHORE – The Neuse River is producing some great fish despite the unfavorable weather this week. Stripers (Bass, Striped) are still turning up on topwater baits. Redfish (Drum, Red) are hitting from the creeks and there are a few Specks (Seatrout, Spotted) mixed in here and there. Early and late during the low light has been the best bite, however days with an overcast will produce fish from morning to night. There have not been many anglers heading to the offshore due to the wind this week however we hope to see things die down for the weekend.

Washington Fishing Report

INSHORE – This week, we’ve seen Bluefish along the beach, just over the last few days a good class of fish have been schooling around the Cape Lookout area. A few anglers even got into some topwater action plus others found action casting small metal lures like Jig Fish and Diamond Jigs. I’d say over the next week or so we should start to see the Blues pushing down toward the Beaufort Inlet. Sea Mullets (Kingfish, Southern) are still being caught in the Turning Basin area and back toward the Beaufort Inlet. The fish are still there but it’s just been hard to fish for them with the winds and currents. Unfortunately, both are making it hard to get the right drift to catch them but in the last few days we’ve seen some nice catches. Spec-Rigs tipped with Bait Shrimp and Fish Bites are getting the job done. Along with the mullets there’s been good numbers of Croakers in the mix and a few Hogfish starting to move in too. Gray Trout (Seatrout, Silver) fishing has been picking up over the last week. Beaufort Inlet area back toward the Turning Basin we’ve been seeing some nice fish. Last weekend, there was some even caught as far back as the AB High Rise Bridge. Spec Rigs tipped with Bait Shrimp and jigging Stingsilvers will be the ticket in catching the Grays. Black Drum (Drum, Black), Red Drum (Drum, Red) and Speckled Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are hanging in all of the creeks and the backwaters. The fish don’t seem to be everywhere but some nice catches have come by the shop. Nick, from the shop went out earlier this week and found a nice school of Redfish but had trouble getting them to eat. But, he didn’t have Live Mud Minnows on the boat, I’m sure that would have got the job done. There’s been good reports of Speckled Trout up in the Adams Creek area along with some of the creeks off Bogue Sound. The Black Drum seem to be hanging in the deeper creeks around docks, pitching Bait Shrimp under them and soaking it seems to be working the best. Piers / Surf: We’re now starting to see Sea Mullets making their way up the beaches. Both piers over the last week are reporting good catches of Mullets. Last week, the best bite seemed to be at night but this week anglers are seeing good action during the day. There’s still plenty of Pufferfish (Puffer, Smooth) being caught along the surf and off the piers. We saw some nice Black Drum caught around the Fort Macon area last weekend, along with a few off the piers. Bait Shrimp and Fish bites fished on the bottom will get you the best action. I’ve not heard of any Bluefish yet but with them showing up at Cape Lookout it won’t be long before anglers will be seeing action in the surf and on the piers.

OFFSHORE – Wind and plenty of it, over the last week the only day boats could get out to the Bluewater was Easter Sunday and the majority found some fish. Wahoo, Blackfin (Tuna, Blackfin) and a few Yellowfin (Tuna, Yellowfin) were caught. The best area seems still to be the Swansboro Hole back up toward the Big Rock. We were hoping maybe this coming up weekend boats could get out but it looks like again the winds won’t let that happen. Also, bottom fishing was pretty good Easter Sunday with plenty of Bass, Triggerfish (Triggerfish, Gray) and Snappers (Snapper, Gray) being caught. So, let’s keep our fingers crossed once we move into April the winds will start to slack off so we can get out and take advantage of the good fishing.

INSHORE – There have been some bigger Redfish (Drum, Red) tipping the scales. They are very large this week and the bite is consistent. There were also some really good Blowfish (Puffer, Smooth). Sea Mullet (Kingfish, Northern & Kingfish, Southern) are also swimming the same area. Bluefish are coming in up to 3 lbs. Things have been good this month and we expect a great Spring pattern. Shrimp has been the main bite for just about everything however the Redfish prefer Bunker this week.

OFFSHORE – Tuna, Blackfin are huge this week up to 30 lbs. This is the main focus for anglers offshore this week when the weather allows everyone to get out.

BAIT REPORT – There are some Bunker (Menhaden) swimming this week however with the wind it may be difficult to stock up on.

INSHORE – Sea Mullet (Kingfish, Southern & Kingfish, Northern) have finally showed up in the surf and the turning basin. A lot of them are also being caught in the mouth of the inlet. Puffer, Smooth are also being caught in the surf. Drum (Drum, Black) and Flounder (Flounder, Southern & Flounder, Winter) have also been reported on the lower tide. Anglers are using soft plastics to hook them. If you put your time in you will find them.

OFFSHORE – Sea Bass, Black have been doing really well around the tanker and inwards. The Tuna (Tuna, Blackfin & Tuna, Yellowfin) bite has slowed down and pretty much fizzled out. There are tons of False Albacore (Bonito, Little Tunny) to the East and anglers are having no trouble hooking them. Wahoo can also be found in the area.

INSHORE – It has been hit and miss for Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) so far this week. Stripers (Bass, Striped) have dramatically picked up and it is one of the best seasons so far. Trout and Reds (Drum, Red) are holding up in the South this week. The Southeast and the North East of the Sound are producing the best fish. There are some Ladyfish in this area as well. Middle to late day bite is the best as the water is warmer at this point. Surfperch, Sand are turning up as well. They are hanging out in the brackish water. DOA lures are working very well. Most anglers are using 3 inch soft plastics such as the DOA Cow Shad or the Zman minnows on an jighead off the bottom. INSHORE – The Striper (Bass, Striped) has picked up around the New Bern portion of the Neuse River. They are moving up river to spawn and fishing has been great. Anglers are throwing soft plastics. The water is off color due to the amount of rain so bright and colorful baits are working best. White and Chartreuse are great. If you can find some fish on shallow flats, rapalas in bright colors are working well. Fish are biting all day long so any time is good to fish.

BAIT REPORT – Hickory and American Shad are biting well this week. They’re moving in with the Stripers. They are anywhere from 16-24 inches. Anglers are using a small jig and a spoon on a tandem rig to hook them.

INSHORE – There has been a lot of rain and unfavorable weather in the area as of late. There have not been a lot of anglers hitting the water however once conditions are more favorable we expect to see a great bite continue. Stripers (Bass, Striped) are beginning to fire up and had been the main focus for most anglers. Soft plastics on the bottom have been the best way to catch them. Shad has been great on a double dart rig. Casting it down in the water column with a steady retrieve has been extremely productive. We can’t wait to see the weather clear up so we can take advantage of the bite.

INSHORE – Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) fishing has improved as far as size goes the past week. Anglers are seeing decent fish since the weather has cooled off. They are moving a little slow and pocketing up in the creeks. The Flounder (Flounder, Southern) bite has also slowed down. There are still a few caught however they are smaller sizes. Puppy Drum (Drum, Red) are still slotted up in schools so when you can find one you will likely find a few. The sizes are decent, some are keepers. Using slower moving baits and lures will help get more bites from reluctant fish.

INSHORE – The recent cold weather and drop in water temperatures has brought a slow down for the Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) bite however when the weather improves so should the bite. Soft plastics moved slow on the bottom are the best bet to hook a trout. Soft plastics are also working well on the Stripers (Bass, Striped) which are picking up along the shore. There are also reports of some good Bluefish from the beaches on lures. Puffer (Puffer, Smooth) and Sea Mullet (Kingfish, Southern & Kingfish, Northern) are hitting from the beach too along with a few Specks (Seatrout, Spotted) around the jetties. They are mostly keeper sizes so far. The sound is holding full sized Puppy Drum as well and most anglers are catching their limits. The water is unusually warm for this time of year so the action is still hot and there are even Jellyfish on the beaches.

INSHORE – Most of the focus has been on the sound this week as it has been hot for Trout (Seatrout, Spotted). There are not a lot of huge sizes however they are coming up in decent numbers so far. Most anglers are excited because the bite is finally starting to pick up. The weather is still fairly warm so they are not as active as they could be as far as the bigger fish are concerned. The Trout have been filtering towards the creeks and anglers are using Shrimp patterns under a popping cork primarily. Reds (Drum, Red) are hit or miss off the banks but there are mostly Trout being caught in this location too. Everyone is expecting the Striper (Bass, Striped) bite to pick up soon as they are beginning to move in. There are no signs of Kingfish, Northern so far this week.

BAIT REPORT – We are still seeing plenty of Finger Mullet swimming and can be easily caught for bait. There also may be some Shrimp around and that has been the main focus for catching bait this week.

Washington Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Sound has had a few fish swimming so far. Reports have come in of Puppy Drum (Drum, Red) that are knotted up in bunches. Once you find one, you will find a few. They have been hitting gold spoons. There has also been reports of Trout (Seatrout, Spotted & Seatrout, Silver) turning up along with some Flounder (Flounder, Southern & Flounder, Summer (Fluke)) and Bluefish. Leadhead curly tail jigs are working best for any of these. There is also a mixed bag of fish from the beach. Since the water temperature is not as cool as it usually is at this time of year there are quite a few different fish in the area. Drum are coming up in great sizes with Bluefish, Flounder, Sea Mullet (Kingfish, Southern) and Puffer, Smooth alongside. They are being caught in smaller sizes on bottom rigs however the larger sized Trout and Drum are hitting lures so far this week.

OFFSHORE – Anyone heading offshore this week has been focusing on Mackerel, King. It has been off one day and really on the next as these fish are extremely hit and miss so far. Luckily anglers do not have to go too far off the beach to hook them as they are swimming pretty close. Stripped Bunker has produced the best results so far as it seems to be a fish favorite this week.

BAIT REPORT – There are still Bunker (Menhaden) running on the beach this week. They are working well in strips for offshore fish.

INSHORE – Most of the target for inshore anglers is the Speckled Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) this week. They have been turning up anywhere from 11-13 inches, just shy of keeper size. They are all in the typical Trout spots so far however we have not heard of a lot of big sizes coming in. Anglers who work hard and keep at it can catch some around 15 inches but this has not been very often. Normally they are in the creeks and rivers by now but most fishermen are having a hard time finding them. Mirrolure MR 17-808 have been the lure of choice this week for those who have hit some good sizes. Zman trout tricks are also a hot artificial in green lantern, mood ring and opening night. There have also been reports of Puffer, Smooth, Dogfish, Spiny and Hogfish swimming the inshore water. Smaller Drum (Drum, Black) have been mixed in with a few spotty big sizes. Along the shore there are some schooled up Reds (Drum, Red) that have been slot size as well. They are hitting the artificial gulp this week as anglers have been easily sight casting for them.

OFFSHORE – Tuna, Bluefin have not been as frequent as last week however they continue to be the target on everyone’s list. Anglers can find them fairly close so far at roughly 40-60 ft of water. Most of them around 73 inches however some have been reported in the low 80s as well. They have been chasing the Menhaden run swimming in the nearshore. There are also tons of False Albacore (Bonito, Little Tunny) turning up however they are not quite keeper sized.

BAIT REPORT – There are Menhaden running farther out towards the offshore this week as the Tuna have been chasing them.

White twister tail gulps are what they are hitting this week. Our sources are reporting some of the biggest Southern Whiting they have ever seen. Anglers have been mixing a Bloodworm and Shrimp on the same hook for the best results.

INSHORE – There is not a whole lot of action inshore this week. Blow Toads (Puffer, Smooth), Sea Mullet (Kingfish, Northern & Kingfish, Southern) are all swimming along with some Bluefish as well. Anglers are using Mullet, Menhaden, and Shrimp as bait and finding it to be very effective. There have not been any reports from the Sound this week however the oceanside area is the most populated this week.

OFFSHORE – There have been no reports of offshore fishing this week. The wind has been between 25-30 mph, the temperature has been cold and the rain has been pouring. Most anglers have opted not to venture out into these conditions so there are currently no reports from this area. INSHORE – The Sound has been producing a fantastic Drum, Red bite as they chase the Finger Mullet run. The Sound has not only produced Drum, Red but a solid mix of Flounder, Summer (Fluke) as well. Both species are preferring live bait, especially cut Mullet to match the run.

OFFSHORE – Wind and rain has deterred many anglers from heading offshore this week. There are currently no offshore trips to report however if conditions lay down and fishermen decide to head to the deeper water they can always consult our Tips feature which provides additional suggestions and information that could help improve the catch. Alternatively Tradewinds Tackle can provide an up to the minute fishing report if anglers have managed to make their way out.

BAIT REPORT – Things are going to slow down for Finger Mullet as sizes are the bigger ones are becoming a little more prominent.

Washington Fishing Report

INSHORE – There’s been a good bite for Drum (Drum, Red) here. Anglers have been catching both Puppy size and bigger throughout the beach. They have been hitting anything from Mullet, Shrimp, Squid and Fish Bites, pretty much anything you put in front of them. They can be found in the inlet and even the boats inshore have been catching big Drum. Drum, Black, Flounder (Flounder, Summer(Fluke) & Flounder, Southern) and Mullet have been scattered but are still turning up in the shallower water. The Sound has begun to slow down as well, so anglers are staying around the beaches and inlet.

BAIT REPORT – It is no longer season for Finger Mullet so at this time the only thing anglers will net are bigger sized Mullet.

INSHORE – The sound is host to a large mixed bag of fish here lately. Reports are seeing Drum (Drum, Red), Founder (Founder, Summer) and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) by the inlet moving in and out from the beach. Shrimp under a popping cork or a jig wit a curly tail are both working extremely well. White or green have been the color of choice by anglers for the sound. Green works especially well with Trout.

Washington Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – The fish have been biting well this week. We had an 80lb Wahoo weighed in the other day. High speed trolling and even average speed (for the bait guys) trolling are both producing fish. You can look for Wahoo about 20-25 miles offshore. There have also been Triggerfish (Triggerfish, Gray) reported at 90-130ft deep. The bottom fishing for Triggers has been pretty good on cut bait.

INSHORE – Several species can be found closer to the shore this week. There are some scattered Redfish (Drum, Red) that are pretty good sizes still swimming. Throughout the inlets they are on fire and a few have been reported to be about 40’’ long. Small Pompano, Florida, were biting last week however following last week’s front the water has cooled down and most of them have most likely moved out. Flounder (Flounder, Gulf / Flounder, Southern) continues to take live baits or artificials. Bluefish, Croaker (Croaker, Atlantic),and Mangos (Drum, Black) have been chasing Mullet and Shrimp.

BAIT REPORT – In the sound there are still some Shrimp moving however there are increased number of more popular Finger Mullet and big Mullet that most anglers are netting to use for bait.

Washington Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – It’s Wahoo season however there is nothing reported so far in this area.

INSHORE – After last week’s storm and flooding all ramps are open except 72. Southpoint is also open through 70 and the beach is open all the way down and the night time driving restriction has been lifted. All ramps should be open soon. Winds are looking to be around 25 to 30 knots. Bluefish and Spanish Mackerel have been good but are expected to leave after this next cold snap. There have been lots of Black Drum and Puppy Drum along with great Trout, Sea Mullet and Croaker in the surf. Mullet, both live and frozen have been working best for Drum. In the Sound we’ve been seeing big Drum staged on the inside of the inlet on the shoals. September and October has brought great Flounder and Croaker as they are in season.

BAIT REPORT – The beaches and have had a spotty Mullet run this past week.

Washington Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – There is still some Wahoo, Dolphin, and Sailfish action in the Gulf Stream, 8-20 miles out. The weather has been pretty windy, so it’s been hit or miss as far as being able to make the trip on account of the sea conditions.

INSHORE – Inshore has been pretty windy the past few days. It seems to have stirred up the big Drum. This week there was a 4 ½ pound Pompano caught in the surf. If you want to catch Pompano, they are hitting Sand Fleas and Shrimp. There are still a lot of Drum, Blues, and Flounder in the surf as well.

BAIT REPORT – Finger Mullet are great bait and there’s been a bunch around.

Washington Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – The Gulf stream has been producing some fish when the weather will let you out. Dolphin and Wahoo are willing to bite. The weedlines have been pretty scattered out there so you’ll have to do some searching.

INSHORE – The Big Drum haven’t started their run yet; so there are still a lot of big 40 to 50 pound Drum Fish to catch from boats up in the sound and are being caught in the evening with live bait. The Drum will start their run probably in the next 2-3 weeks. The sound is also fishing well for Croaker, Trout, Flounder, with Pompano being found in the shallows. Finger Mullet have been thick on the outside of the sound, Bluefish are showing up in larger sizes and good numbers. They are still catching Sea Mullet and Flounder in the Surf as well. Again, with the Finger Mullet being fairly thick, any artificial that looks like one is going to be a good bet. Last week, they weighed in two large Citation Pompano.

BAIT REPORT – Finger Mullet have really moved in. They’re being found, and caught, all over the outer beaches and inlets. There’s also a good amount of Pinfish in the bay towards the outside as well.

Washington Fishing Report

SOUND – Captain Mitchell Blake says the Red Drum bite is about as good as it gets right now. For the big drum, 40lb+, green and chartreuse has been a great color combo for flies and plastics. The Red Drum fishing should continue going well until it’s time to switch gears for Stripers come october. Bluefish have finally shown up in closer to shore areas. The weather has been quite decent lately and some nice looking fish are being caught by Capt. Mitchell’s clients.

BAIT REPORT – Menhaden, Pinfish, and Shrimp have been good baits to use lately. The are reportedly very heavy in the local systems.

Washington Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Anglers in the Gulf Stream found themselves having a great close to last week’s fishing before the fish turned off a bit through the weekend. When there are fish showing themselves out there it’s Wahoo and Dolphin and the weather should stabilize so that fishing conditions can improve again; that way everyone can get back to trolling skirted Ballyhoo in the blue water.

INSHORE – Casting lures along the beach has been working well for catching Bluefish and Spanish Mackerel. Boats trolling clarkspoons are also have luck with the Spanish Mackerel. Some Pompano and and Trout are being found along the beaches as well.

SOUND – The Drum won’t start leaving the sound for quite some time yet. The Speckled Trout haven’t given up much to be talked about lately and the Flounder bite is on and off closer to shore.

Washington Fishing Report

SOUND – The Flounder fishing has really taken off in the last little while. The situation in the sound is pretty mixed bag right now. There are Drum of varying sizes. Most of what Captain Mitchell over at FishIBX has been catching has been on artificials. He likes to drop a big soft plastic underneath a popping cork; or use a crankbait. The water is really clear right now so he has been sticking to the natural colors.

INSHORE – Tarpon are starting to fire up around the Pamlico River. Captain Mitchell has mostly been using live bait; whatever he can get his hands on which usually means Mullet or Pogies. These fish work well live or cut. Trout are not doing well at all compared to last week; they are small and hard to come by right now. The Red drum is around, but the Black Drum stick to the other side of the sound.

BAIT REPORT – There are lots of Shrimp around, Menhaden (Pogy) schools, and Mullet. Bait is plentiful right now and we can only expect the fishing to get better since the bait is so great right now.

Pamlico Sound / Washington Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – The wind has kept most people off the water for the last few days but there have been lots of Spanish Mackerel close up for those who have ventured out.

INSHORE – Up in the river Captain Mitchell Blake at FishIBX caught his first Trout of the year last week. There was also a big Drum bite last week. We are now shifting into big Drum time, with Drum over 40 inches and 40 pounds. Your best bet for catching these guys is to use swim baits and large crankbaits. You’ll also find Tarpon out there. The tarpon are found cruising in the sound if it’s calm or in the river when it’s windy. Captain Mitchell  recommends Chunking using cut Mullet and live Menhaden. Crab is also great if you can get your hands on it.

BAIT REPORT – There are lots of Menhaden, Shrimp and Crab around.

Captain Mitchell Blake at FishIBX also gives live fishing reports on his facebook page in the form of recent photos, check out his page at the link below.

Washington Fishing Report

INSHORE In Northeast North Carolina, Captain Blake Mitchell and Fish IBX are transitioning from the winter and spring Striped Bass bite to chasing Trout, Flounder, Big and Puppy Drum around Pamlico. Early in the season, Drum in particular will be hungry and a live bait or fresh cut bait are attractive to fish that are into the summer pattern.

Crank baits in natural colours are also a good choice when water clarity is an issue.

Bait- Menhaden are plentiful and can be secured by casting a Sabiki or cast net into the sound. Jumping Mullet should get thicker as the season goes on. Captain Mitchell and the Fish IBX team are looking to cater to anglers in search of big drum and tarpon on Pamlico Sound near Washington. Book your trip today.
