Washburn and Seconsett Islands Fishing Report

INSHORE – Saltwater angling has all but wrapped up in Massachusetts. There will still be some small holdover Bass (Bass, Striped) in canals and rivers. Some areas on the west of Cape Cod Bay will see decent amount of Herring throughout the winter. Early winter still provides some Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) opportunities for recreational angling. The state has some really good freshwater fishing in the ponds and lakes. Stay tuned for new in-app Freshwater hot spots to get you through the offseason till everything fires back up in the spring. Have a great winter and stay safe.

OFFSHORE – Not a lot has changed from last week. There is still the odd Striper (Bass, Striped) kicking around the beaches. They aren’t consistent but at least the Smelt have arrived. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

BAIT REPORT – Although Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) are closed, anglers who are determined to fish are finding them at the Stellwagen Bank. The day bite when conditions are favorable enough to get out has been most productive. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

INSHORE – Bass (Bass, Striped) are scattered and inconsistent but if you are looking to target them and put some time in on the beaches you’ll find a few. An hour before and after incoming tide is a good time to throw some plugs. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – Cod (Cod, Atlantic) are biting on the wrecks way offshore in the deep water. Anglers are heading out during the weather breaks. Clams, Squid or Diamond jigs are working to hook them. Big Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) are being caught to the South. Anglers are struggling to find keeper recreational sizes among the giants. Washburn and Seconsett Islands Fishing Report

INSHORE – Inshore is still windy. A lot of anglers are turning to Freshwater for some shelter. Those who are braving the conditions are finding scattered Bass (Bass, Striped) on the beaches using sub surface swim plugs. Mackerel (Mackerel, Atlantic) are mixed in. Anglers continue to search the South side of the islands as well as the Sound. The canals are providing a bit of shelter and are also holding a few Tautog. Low tide is still the best time to fish. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – The wind has picked up into this week. When anglers can make it on the water they aren’t finding a huge difference in the bite. Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) are moving to the South and still open for recreational anglers. The best bite seems to be during the early morning hours. Strategic Angler lures continue to be productive. You can find them following small bait, but not a lot of anglers are live baiting. If you’re not finding bait, look for the birds to find the bait and the fish. Washburn and Seconsett Islands Fishing Report

INSHORE – There are still some Bass (Bass, Striped) to be found on the beaches with Mackerel. Sub surface swim plugs are working well to catch the Bass. On the South side by the Elizabethan Islands there are tons of fish in the Sound. Tautog has slowed down but you can still find them in the canals and structures off the shore if you put some time in. Fish them during low light times. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) are biting to the South this week. The commercial season is closed but they are still open for recreational anglers casting for them. Strategic Angler Lures are working well since they look like Herring. The Tuna are feeding on the small bait. Not many people are live baiting as you cannot keep the giant fish that will eat them. The day bite is most productive. The Mid bay bite has died down. Search under the birds to find them. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

BAIT REPORT – Bait has been difficult to find this week.

Washburn and Seconsett Islands Fishing Report

INSHORE – Anglers are heading to the canals this week for the bigger Stripers (Bass, Striped) at dawn and dusk. Most fish have moved out at this point and the weather is changing quickly. If you can find a decent day you may find some Tog (Tautog). Search rocky structures and jetties to find them. They are hit or miss, some days they are hot and some days they are scarce. The middle of Cape Cod bay is providing a great Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) bite. Mackerel has been the key bait if you can find them. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – The weather has been a bit too unfavorable for anglers to head out this week. If you are determined to get out and catch some fish there are Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) biting around the middle of Cape Cod bay. If you can find Mackerel, that’s going to be the best bait for them. Washburn and Seconsett Islands Fishing Report

INSHORE – Albies (Bonito, Little Tunny) have pretty much pushed out at this point. There are still some big Bass here and there if you run into them at the right time and tide. Most of the Bass here are schoolies. Bluefish are slow. Tautog are open and can be found anywhere there is structure such as rock piles, jetties or wrecks. The bite is decent. Green Crabs are best however Fish Bites are a great alternative. Anglers aren’t even needing any fresh bait to go with it. Otherwise, the ponds have been stocked in with lots of Trout. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – The weather is just starting to change in the area. The fishing will change rapidly. We are seeing the best Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) bite we have had in decades. RonZs are working well. Hogie Harness vertical jigs are also productive if you are casting although it’s mostly a live bait bite. They are in Cape Cod bay as well. There are plenty of giants here. They are all the way up to the Bank and then South to Provincetown, Chatham and East towards the sword. Some are right off the beach. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

BAIT REPORT – There is still a lot of Bunker (Menhaden). They are not quite as thick as it was earlier in the fall however they are still swimming and easy to catch.

INSHORE – Green Harbor, South towards the Canal and Sandwich have been great for Bass (Bass, Striped) fishing along with the canal itself. Plugs, Gibbs Lures, Lights Out Lures and custom wooden surface topwater lures in light colors are working well to hook them. You can also snag Bunker and light line them. First light and last light are the best times to fish. In the sound there are still a lot of fish off the bay. Striped Bass can be caught right off the beaches. Gibbs Lures are good here too. Walk the beach and look for signs. Cast right into them when you see bait pushing. Off of Chatham there are a few Bass hanging out but they aren’t as thick as they have been. The Big Buck Contest starts on the 17th. The buy in is $10 and winner takes all! See store for details! PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

INSHORE – The fishing is okay near Woods Hole and along the Islands using Eels. Anglers are fishing with Plugs first thing in the morning for Stripers (Bass, Striped). The Tautog fishing gets better and better as the days cool off. The canal has been good lately for Bass. Tides are best in the morning but this time of year you never know as the fish are always on the move. You could see a nice afternoon tide. The beaches in Sandwich have had fish at night. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

They’re in the sound from boats and beach anglers are all collecting fish from Hyannis to Harwich and to Nauset Beach. Anglers are getting double digits. Epoxy jigs are working best in pink and bone. There are some Bass (Bass, Striped) being picked up in Cape Cod Bay off the East end of the canal as well as Chatham where they are vertical jigging them with Daddy Macs. On the flats you’ll find them in 8 ft. They are from Barnstable towards the canal. There were a lot of Bluefish in bluewater taking umbrella rigs or blue bombers. Bonito (Bonito, Pacific) have turned up in the bay recently. In the sound we are seeing Albies (Bonito, Little Tunny) caught on Hogy Epoxy jigs that are being caught from boats. INSHORE – The canal has been slow this week. Cape Cod bay has been holding Stripers on the West side from the Mouth to Barnstable. The middle bay has slowed down. Bluefish are swimming the East side up inside the harbor and North in deep water. Hoochies, Hogy Perfect Squid are easy to use and a great to throw. Off of Chatham from Eastham to Monomoy there is a good bite on Stripers (Bass, Striped) on the vertical jig. You’ll get them in great sizes if you can get on top of them and jig properly. There are some Dogfish (Dogfish, Spiny) mixed in. The rips in Monomoy are holding big Bass if you put some time in. There are some big Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) that can be caught if you are trolling deep divers. They are up to 25 inches. INSHORE – The canal has turned on. There are plenty of Bass (Bass, Striped) on the evening, overnight or dawn bite. Anglers are mostly jigging for the bigger fish. In Cape Cod bay there had been a lot of big fish from Sandwich to Scituate Harbor. It has thinned out a bit but the fish that are swimming are big so put some time in to find them. The 3 oz River Fox jigs are working well. Bluefish are peppered throughout the bay as well. They are everywhere and taking anything including Rangers or Hawkins. Anything surface is productive. On the back the Bass are schooled up in places that are holding Sand Eels on the bottom. From Marconi to Monomoy just watch out of the Dogfish. The rips off Monomoy are holding a lot of Bass. The fish off Chatham are a bit smaller but there are fish. In Nantucket Sound the bottom bite is producing Bass, Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black), and Scup. Gun Classes are happening this week! Washburn and Seconsett Islands Fishing Report

INSHORE – Anglers are finally finding Bass (Bass, Striped) off the rips off of Chatham. This is a good sign this year. They vary in size but if you put some time in you will find a keeper. Ripping Flies or Molded Squid by Slick Fish has worked very well. In the Sound the Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are still around and the boats are beginning to target Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)], especially around Nantucket. They are around 10 lbs. Bluefish are off the Vineyard but that’s about it so far. As the water warms up we hope to see them move into the Sound and Bay. In the bay there are huge schools of Pogie in the middle of the bay in deep water. There will usually be some Stripers hanging around them. From the Sound there are still some fish during the early morning bite but they aren’t crazy. There are a ton of small fish on the shoals, not a lot of keepers but they provide a fun bite.

OFFSHORE – The Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) have been slow to the East. The Orca are changing conditions and pushing the fish around so we will have to see how it turns out.

BAIT REPORT – Pogie (Menhaden) are swimming the bay this week. There are new products arriving at Powder Horn Outfitters all the time! Stop in and check it out!

INSHORE – The Sound is great this week. A lot of short Bass (Bass, Striped), Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] and Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are excellent. Bluefish show up on the shoals pretty well in the morning. The fish are decent sizes everywhere. Live Mackerel is best. The canal is pretty slow. We hope to see things pick up soon.

Washburn and Seconsett Islands Fishing Report

INSHORE – Commercial Striped Bass (Bass, Striped) opens on the 23 so things will start to get crazy. Stay away from the large crowds of boats to be safe. There are some smaller Stripers around Barnstable Harbor in Cape Cod Bay. A lot of Mackerel are around so if you drift them live that is a good bet. Green and Blue Mackerel SP Minnows have also been productive. The deeper water in the square has anglers trolling Umbrella rigs. Mixed colors such as red/white, black/white or black/red are great. The bigger fish are in the deeper water. We are looking from 30-80 ft of water, the deeper the water the slower you go. On the backside there are some fish starting to show up in the rips. In the Sound we are seeing lots of ground fish. The Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] is turning on out by Nantucket. Anglers are doing well and the sizes are good for the time of year. Shimano jigs are doing well along with Fishbites that are out fishing fresh bait. The Dogfish (Dogfish, Spiny) don’t seem to go for the Fishbites so that’s also a plus. The only place in town for Bluefish is the Oregon Beach and to the South and West Beaches. The warmer weather should move them into the bay and sound.

OFFSHORE – Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) are doing really good, just in time for Tuna Fest this weekend. There are a lot of Tuna and a lot of bait around, both commercial and recreational. Fishbars have done well along with fresh Ballyhoo for the deep bites. Strategic Angler Baits have just arrived and they are phenomenal in the pink plugs.

INSHORE – There are Bluefish back along the sound beaches from South Cape to Craigville and Jimmy the Greek is taking some jumbo bass and a mix of jumbo Porgies (Scup) and Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) on the rock piles between Woods Hole and Hyannis. Barnstable Harbor has been giving up some good fish when conditions allow drifting eels or chunk baits.

Washburn and Seconsett Islands Fishing Report

INSHORE – Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) and Scup in Nantucket Sound are phenomenal. Fish Bites are out fishing fresh bait. It has been catching huge sizes of both fish. Off Oregon beach there is a ton of Bluefish. Single hooks are best and Rangers are particularly successful. In Cape Cod Bay the topwater bite has been fantastic. Custom plugs such as Gibbs or other wood plugs are out fishing most products. SP Minnows are hot as well. Anglers are catching huge Striped Bass (Bass, Striped) up to 35 lbs. There are plenty of product Demos happening next weekend June 18-19, just in time for Father’s day.

OFFSHORE – Commercial Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) is now open and the bite has been good. The bite has died down a bit from opener but we expect it to pick up. Lighter tackle such as bigger swim plugs have been the most productive.

INSHORE – Fishing has been consistent throughout the Canal. West end has been producing bigger Bass (Bass, Striped) up to 25 lb. The water temp has passed 50 degrees that is always good. All different types of bait has setup on the both ends of the Canal. Flounder [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] and Tautog fishing is still strong, up to 10lb Tautog down the East end.

INSHORE – In the canal there are fish moving through and keepers taken. Bob Davis Canal Cruisers are hot long with Hogy Paddle Tail jigs are good as well. In Cape Cod Bay the harbor is loaded with Bass (Bass, Striped) of all sizes. There are some schoolie and keepers in there. Small and white lures such as Bucktails, anything with rubber or Bill Hurley lures are working. SP Minnows are great on an overcast day. In the middle of the bay there is tons of Mackerel (Mackerel, Atlantic) running thick. Sabiki rigs are working well with an A 17 Diamond jig you’ll catch some great sizes from the bottom. Brewster Flats are holding some schoolie sized Stripers, primarily on the night bite but fly fisherman from Barnstable to Eastham are finding success on a moving tide. Orange and Red are fishing well on flies. Spin guys can use Hurleys and soft plastics. Not a lot has come out of the back but there are some reports of Groundfish and Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black). Don’t forget to double check the regulations as they have changed for this year. Easy Clam has been an awesome bait to throw, especially for Sea Bass, Tautog, Scup and Porgy. It looks like it is going to shape up for a promising Fluke season. There have only been a couple reports at this point but we should see them off the islands of Nantucket. A few reports of Bluefish are coming off the Falmouth and Southern beaches have come in. Once the water warms up they should move into the bay.

INSHORE – Small keepers are coming mostly from the west end and just around the railroad bridge, but the photo of a supposed 40-inch Striper (Bass, Striped) was much more like a 33-inch linesider according to Bruce at Canal Bait and Tackle. There are plenty of Herring around and the first quality bass of the season should be coming into the scales this week. The Tautog bite in the West end has been very good and they have a good supply of Crabs on hand.

INSHORE – The crew at Canal Bait and Tackle reports hearing of some Mackerel, Atlantic in the east end of the Canal, but that is pretty much all that’s going for saltwater angling right now. They are still preferring live Eels this week and although the bite is not on fire the bait will work well for anything swimming. With all the local lakes and ponds stocked by the state with trout the majority of efforts are being targeted there.

BAIT REPORT – Sand Eels are running the bottom of the offshore and the Mackerel are already chasing them.

INSHORE – There are still some Bass, Striped (Stripers) in the canal this week. They are slow but anglers who put their time in can expect to catch some big fish. Otherwise there have been no reports from the inshore as of this week. Most places have shut down for the season already. Lots of people are switching their focus to freshwater or offshore fishing at this point.

OFFSHORE – The South East corner of the bank at Stellwagen has been holding a solid Tuna, Bluefin bite this week. They have been chasing the Mackerel run which in turn is chasing the Sand Eel run along the bottom. Using these as live or cut bait will produce the best results to match the bait run. The sizes have still been good and there has been no trouble catching in this late season.

BAIT REPORT – Sand Eels are running the bottom of the offshore and the Mackerel are already chasing them.

INSHORE – Most of the inshore is pretty much shut down for the year. There are still some Mackerel, Atlantic swimming however this is the only fish reported this week. For anglers that decide to try their luck from the inshore they can always take a look at our Tips feature which provides additional information and suggestions to help improve the catch.

OFFSHORE – There are a few Tuna, Bluefin left stacked up in the bay around the banks. If weather permits, anglers have been heading out in the evening and night to throw some live Mackerel. This has been very productive and anglers are reporting a quick bite and decent sizes. With the cold water these results should continue into next week.

BAIT REPORT – There are still a few Mackerel running and working well as bait in the offshore.

Washburn and Seconsett Islands Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Tog (Tautog) have been active in this area as of late. Clams, Squid, and Green Crabs continue to work well. There have also been Bass, Striped in the canal. They are sporadic but large so if anglers put their time in they will reel in some great sizes. Canal Cruisers – a local made lure, has been doing well in pink or angry squid colors. They can cast clear across the lake and produce the best results.

OFFSHORE – Tuna, Bluefin bite has continued into this week when the weather is right. They have been on fire when anglers can hit the water. Jigging Mackerel has been the best method of catching this week. Trolling has been fairly effective as well. Some anglers are trolling Squid bars however this has not been as productive this week. They are not too far out located on the South-East Corner at roughly 3 miles North of Provincetown.

BAIT REPORT – There are to no bait running to report yet. Check out our Tips feature for more information and suggestions that could help improve your catch this holiday!

Washburn and Seconsett Islands Fishing Report

INSHORE – Things have been slowing down inshore this week. There are still a few reports of Stripers (Bass, Striped) swimming the canals, but for the most part they have moved on. Some anglers are hooking them in Rhode Island and South a bit more however they are spotty here.

OFFSHORE – The Tuna, Bluefin bite has been solid lately in the deep water. They aren’t too far out at 10-14 miles off the shore. They’ve even been taking Sand Eels. They are not coming up in big numbers but are still in good sizes. Mackerel are swimming as well and anglers continue to live line them for Tuna as well. Cod fishing is now closed so boaters can no longer keep them.

BAIT REPORT – Schools of Sand Eels have been passing through this area along with some Mackerel in the offshore.

November 10, 2015

Washburn and Seconsett Islands Fishing Report

INSHORE – From the boats Tautog has continued to have a steady bite. Anglers should be looking for structure along the bottom to find them. Anything from rock piles to wrecks they will hit live Green Crabs. The Bass, Striped have moved South at this point.

OFFSHORE – There is still a lot of action in the deeper water as of late. There are Cod (Cod, Atlantic) hiding along the wrecks. A bit farther out Pollock (Pollock, Atlantic) are swimming on the bottom. Bluefin (Tuna, Bluefin) are still hanging around but are not as hot as they were last week. Anglers can find them just about anywhere, as their location changes depending on the wind. Tuna were chasing live Mackerel however have recently seemed to prefer when anglers are trolling with Squid bars. As always, the bigger fish are in the deeper water. As the weather has begun to cool down the fish have started to move out.

BAIT REPORT – Green Crabs are a popular bait for inshore fish and can be easily caught in harbors and estuaries. Mackerel are working well as offshore bait and can be found there as well in roughly 200 ft of water. OF NOTE – Check out Powder Horn Outfitters Countdown to Christmas sale where there is a different product on sale each week.

Washburn and Seconsett Islands Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Striper (Bass, Striped) migration is still on as the fish move South although they continue to chase the peanut sized Menhaden. Stripers are hitting them 10 ft. off the South side beaches. Bluefish are also still swimming and chasing Menhaden. Although there has been lots of action the past few weeks it is starting to slow down. Any anglers making their way out at night have been using darker colors for artificials. Most anglers are using Mackerel or Menhaden patterns and colors to match the live bait run. Trout are still hot in the kettle ponds.

OFFSHORE – The Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) bite has been pretty good in the deeper water as of late. Anglers can go anywhere from 14-30 miles and expect to hit a school and reel in a decent size. Most of the larger Tuna are in the deeper water however fishermen trolling the surface have caught some smaller sizes on Squid Bars. Free lining Mackerel in deeper water has been the most successful method. Ballyhoo and Sand Eels are also working well.

BAIT REPORT – Menhaden and Mackerel are all running thick and close right now. They are all working well for both inshore and offshore fish.

Washburn and Seconsett Islands Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – There are still Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin, Tuna, Bluefin) in Cape Cod with reports of fish up to 500 lbs. There has been so much wind this month it has made offshore fishing a challenge, however there are some decent fish out there now. Most anglers are using live Mackerel or Whiting for bait on jigs after they anchor down. You may even find Tuna in water anywhere from shallow to 100 ft.

INSHORE – Everything is slowing down at this point. There are still some Tautog in good sizes being reported. Anglers are using Green, Asian and Fiddler Crabs, with Green being the most popular. The best technique is to first anchor and toss the crab’s limbs overboard as chum. Then hook your crab (half or whole) to use as bait. You will want to look around the rock piles and boulders as all the Tautog will be hiding in about 12-16 ft of water looking for something to eat. They are expected to migrate to warmer water in the next few weeks.

OF NOTE – Remember to get your reels in to Eastman’s Sport & Tackle for service at the end of the year so you don’t have to find a rotten reel come spring.

Washburn and Seconsett Islands Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – High winds up to 40 knots have made offshore fishing difficult. Although Tuna was active last week there are no reports coming in for this week. Blame it on the weather.

INSHORE – Striped Bass are still reported inshore for the anglers who are willing to bare the winds with live eels being the go to bait. They are expected to keep biting for another week or so before really shutting down.

BAIT REPORT – There hasn’t been too much happening with bait right now. Look to an improvement in the weather to bring the bait back.

Washburn and Seconsett Islands Fishing Report

It’s been a quiet week in the area. The weather has been quite windy. It’s hard to tell what’s in the water until the wind slows down. False Albacore and Bluefin are around along with quite a few Bonita being caught. The SI Epoxy Minnow has been the most popular in ⅝in or ⅞in in pink or green.
