Surf City Fishing Report

INSHORE – We’re getting pretty comfortable with the early Spring bite this week. Mullet (Kingfish, Southern) are picking up on the surf and the piers. The bite is steady and anglers are having no trouble hooking onto them. Drum (Drum, Black) have been caught in the same areas. Dogfish (Dogfish, Spiny) are still swimming the beach along with a few Puffers (Puffer, Smooth). Dogfish usually put up a good fight but lookout because they can also take your lures! The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Reds (Drum, Red) haven’t stopped inshore. We have seen a steady bite throughout most of the Winter. They are taking plastic MirrOlures. A handful of Black Drum are mixed in as well. Flounder (Flounder, Winter) are beginning to bite in the back with decent numbers. We expect them to heat up as the season progresses. East Coast Sports has fresh stock of bait in so stop in and load up for your trip! Select Yeti products are also $100 off! PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish listed below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – Offshore really depends on the weather for the most part however sunny days are producing a great bite. The occasional King (Mackerel, King) has been caught offshore. We expect Albacore any time. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are swimming the bottom from 45 feet of water on out. The deeper you go the bigger they get. Wahoo are hit or miss depending on the day.

INSHORE – The water is warming up really quick which is firing up the Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) in the rivers and creeks. Bradley Creek, Pages Creek and Hewitt’s Creek are on fire. Drum (Drum, Red & Drum, Black) fishing has turned on around the docks. Anglers are using cut Shrimp to hook them. They are schooled up on the beach around the inlets on the shoals, Figure 8 and Carolina beach Inlet. Sea Mullet (Kingfish, Southern) fishing off the beach and piers is doing well on Shrimp with a two drop bottom rig. Stripers (Bass, Striped) are great in the river. Shad are making their way to the dam so the fish are following them and fattening up. Check out the Spring Sale beginning April 15th at Intracoastal Angler! OFFSHORE – The phone’s been ringing about if the Spots have shown up yet, yesterday I got the best report we’ve had all Fall. I talked to one angler that caught over 100 fishing in the Turning Basin area. From what I could tell, they are hanging more in front of the Port, not back toward the Inlet area. It’s hard for a Spot to turn down Live Bloodworms, Fresh Shrimp or Fish bites. I’m in high hopes from what we’ve seen over the last few days this is the start of the run and we’ll get a good week or so of fishing for them before they move out.

INSHORE – The piers are seeing Bluefish and Puffers (Puffer, Smooth) on Shrimp. There’s still a good Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) bite along the surf when the weather allows. MirrOlures still seem to be the best lures for them. If you’re wanting to find the bigger Trout, you’ll need to head further inshore and work the creek mouths and backwaters. With this cold weather it’s important to present your baits low and slow as the fish get sluggish in cold temperatures. East Coast Sports has 50% off almost the ENTIRE second floor. Surf City Fishing Report

INSHORE – The bite through this area has slowed down a bit this week. Drum, Black continue to turn up throughout the inlet and the surf. Blues (Bluefish) have been caught from the piers along with some Puffer, Smooth. All of these fish are loving Shrimp these days. Live is generally is the best bet however a similar artificial such as an Egret Vudu Shrimp will be very productive as well. There are still some Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) biting this week however most of them are small and there are not too many keepers. They are mostly going after MirrOlures this week. As the temperature drops fish are beginning to become more passive so anglers are slowing down their presentation and giving the Trout a chance to become interested in the lure. There are no reports of Drum, Red so far this week. East Coast Sports has 50% off almost the ENTIRE second floor. Stop in and check out their great deals on clothing, camping gear and more.

OFFSHORE – There have been reports of Grouper (Grouper, Gag), Mackerel (Mackerel, King), and Wahoo swimming the offshore. There are no signs of Bluefin (Tuna, Bluefin) so far this week however we expect to see some turn up.

Surf City Fishing Report

INSHORE – There is a solid bite so far this week. Reds (Drum, Red), Drum (Drum, Black), and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are all hitting off the pier. The Surf is providing pretty much the same fish with an added Kingfish, Southern bite and an increased Trout bite. There has also been the occasional Spot turn up as well both in the surf and the sound. The sound is holding Flounder (Flounder, Southern), Trout, Reds and Drum as well. Mirrolures are working particularly well for the Trout around the creeks, piers and surf. Anglers are eagerly awaiting the cooler temperatures that should school up the fish.

OFFSHORE – There has been a decent King (Mackerel, King) bite offshore this week. They have also been hitting sporadically from the piers however this is not a consistent bite. Grouper, Gag are doing well off the bottom along with some Wahoo swimming above. There’s lots of menhaden out there too for bait.

BAIT REPORT – There’s some Menhaden offshore.

Surf City Fishing Report

INSHORE – There is still a slight Bluefish bite in the area from the beaches. They are preferring Bunker (Menhaden). There have also been reports of a decent Bass, Striped bite from the same area over 30 inches long. Both fish may not be hot but the sizes are great. Anglers are also using Bunker for Bass. There have been no reports of Trout being caught so far this week however as the temperature begins to cool we expect them to start heating up. The Red (Drum, Red) bite has slowed down and they are becoming less active.

BAIT REPORT – There is still a bit of Bunker (Menhaden) running in the area.

Surf City Fishing Report

INSHORE – The fishing inshore has been limited however still good. Most anglers are only seeing Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Reds (Drum, Red) so far this week. The Trout have been biting in the surf on MR 17 Mirrolures in 808 color. They are also loving the Trout Tricks by zman. It has been pulling in a pretty good bite. The Reds have been holding up in the sound. They are definitely not picky this week and seem to bite pretty much anything you put in front of them. There have been no signs of Flounder or Whiting so far this week.

OFFSHORE – The offshore fishing has been pretty good so far this week. The main focus has been Tuna, Bluefin. They have been coming up in good sizes and numbers. Anglers have been trolling Ballyhoo on blue water candy skirts. This has shown to be extremely productive as most anglers are coming back having gotten into fish.

BAIT REPORT – It has been difficult to find live bait so far this week.

Surf City Fishing Report

INSHORE – Weather has been mild in this area lately which has pushed the fish schedule behind. This is great as the bigger sizes of Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are beginning to show up now. The numbers have been good and there have been tons of smaller sizes however they have been getting bigger. There are far more keeper sizes this week, seeing them on mostly higher tides. Grubs and jigs as well as some Mirrolures in patterns such as 17MRs, 18MRs, & 5200s are producing the best results. Some anglers are using a saltwater assassin sea shad on the jigs, or alternatively live Shrimp. They are floating them in shallow water or light lining them on a carolina rig with a split shot in the deeper water. This helps them get a bit further down. Artificial Shrimp are also working well. There have been no reports of fish coming off the beach yet this week.

BAIT REPORT – There are still some Finger Mullet swimming this week mixed in with some thick Mud Minnows as well.

INSHORE – The Pier has not had many reports as of yet this week. Fishing has been fairly slow however there has been some action along the surf. Anglers have been walking the surf and turning up with good amounts of Flounder (Flounder, Southern & Flounder, Gulf) as well as some Virginia Mullet (Kingfish, Northern) mixed in. They have continued to hit Shrimp or similar artificials this week. There have not been reports of Specks (Seatrout, Spotted) yet this week however they are still expected to be out there.

BAIT REPORT – There have not been reports of bait running yet this week.

Surf City Fishing Report

INSHORE – There have been a good number of Specks (Seatrout, Spotted) reported from the inshore waters. They are coming up in great sizes using mirrolures or mirrodines. In the surf there is quite a bit of action as well. Drum (Drum, Black) and Reds (Drum, Red) are turning up on cut Mullet while Sea Mullet (Kingfish, Southern & Kingfish, Northern) are hitting mostly Shrimp. There are a few Specks in the surf as well that have been caught using mirrolures as well, generally at night. The piers have produced lots of Spot like crazy using Bloodworms on a two hook bottom rig. A few Bull Reds have been reeled in at this area as well, weighing up to 40 lbs!

OFFSHORE – There is not a lot of action in the deeper water this week however there have been a few reports of Mackerel, King caught around the 15 mile range. Anglers have been live baiting them and this has been working very well. Should anglers decide to head out for the holidays they can always consult our Tips feature which provides additional information and suggestions to improve the catch. East Coast Sports can also provide an up to the minute report so fishermen know exactly what to expect when they hit the water.

BAIT REPORT – There is both a run of Menhaden and large Mullet passing through at this time. Head down to East Coast Sports and take advantage of some great liquidation sales with prices as low as cost! The sale will continue through until Christmas, so hurry in!

Surf City Fishing Report

INSHORE – The surf continues to produce great fish this week. Whiting (Kingfish, Northern & Kingfish, Southern) are biting the North end of the surf chasing live Shrimp and Bloodworms. The Surf City Pier is a hot spot for Blues (Bluefish) and Puffers (Puffer, Smooth) during the day, along with some Spot and Drum (Drum, Red) at night. These species are chasing fresh Shrimp as well as anglers are using two hook bottom rigs.

OFFSHORE – Wind and rain has deterred many anglers from heading offshore this week. There are currently no offshore trips to report however if conditions lay down and fishermen decide to head to the deeper water they can always consult our Tips feature which provides additional suggestions and information that could help improve the catch. Alternatively One Stop Bait & Tackle can provide an up to the minute fishing report if anglers have managed to make their way out.

BAIT REPORT – The live bait run was becoming spotty by the end of last week however our sources suspect there are still Menhaden and Mullet running as a great option for cut bait along the bottom.

Surf City Fishing Report

INSHORE – Anglers continue to report Tout (Seatrout, Spotted) in the rivers and creeks. There have also been a few nice Flounder (Flounder, Summer (Fluke) & Flounder, Southern) and Redfish (Drum, Red) swimming as well. Drum (Drum, Black) can also be found in the waterways right now. Along the beaches there have been reports of tons of Sheepshead hitting fresh bait, mainly live Minnows and Shrimp. Mackerel (Mackerel, King & Mackerel, Spanish) have been within 3 miles of shore as fishermen have been trolling for them using spoons for the Spanish and live bait for the Kings. Menhaden are working best. Most fish have been moving closer to shore with the nasty weather and conditions happening in the deeper water.

OFFSHORE – Wind and rain has deterred many anglers from heading offshore this week. There are currently no offshore trips to report however if conditions lay down and fishermen decide to head to the deeper water they can always consult our Tips feature which provides additional suggestions and information that could help improve the catch. Alternatively Rod & Reel Shop can provide an up to the minute fishing report if anglers have managed to make their way out.

BAIT REPORT – There’s nothing major in terms of bait around to report.

INSHORE – As the temperature drops and the water cools down the Seatrout, Spotted have started to bite and are expected to become more prominent in November. For additional information on this species you can always check out our Tips feature which provides everything you need to know to improve your catch. There is a lot of good fishing off the pier right now. Spot and Drum, Red are biting anything live. Shrimp and Bloodworms are the top choice that is always a go-to for anglers. Finger Mullet is working as well but hasn’t been as successful.

BAIT REPORT – There are no major reports of bait running right now, although the live Shrimp, Bloodworms and Finger Mullet are working best at this time.

Surf City Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Last weeks tournament has shown that the Wahoo bite in the gulf stream has been great. Anglers are high speed trolling using lures. Blue Water Candy’s Jag-A-Hoo has been just rockin’ for Wahoo. If you would like to experiment with different lures you can always check in with East Coast Sports or consult our Tips feature which will provide you with lots of info on offshore fish to help improve your catch.

INSHORE – There are several different species biting closer to shore. Reds (Drum, Red) from the surf and piers are taking Bloodworms off the bottom. Flounder (Flounder, Gulf / Flounder, Summer (Fluke) / Flounder, Southern) have been reported around the docks as well. There is a solid mix of all three species so be prepared to hook any one of them on live baits around inshore structures. The weather is expected to be a little rainy, followed by some nice, consistent temperatures ideal for fishing next week.

BAIT REPORT – The recent freshwater flush had made bait pretty spotty however they are starting to show back up. Peanut Menhaden and Finger Mullet will be easy to find in the shallow water. Shrimp has also been reported in some nets as well.

OF NOTE – The 25% off select clothing sale continues. East Coast Sports also stocks custom color Mirrolures that you will only find in store!

Surf City Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – The Wahoo and Sailfish bite has been decent in the Gulf Stream. Pulling skirted Ballyhoo is your go to. The wire rigs, which are a good idea when fishing for Wahoo and working for Sailfish as well. If a Wahoo hits a mono rig, cross your fingers that he hits in the right spot. There’s also some Dolphin and Blackfin Tuna being caught on the same rigs in the same spots so you can expect a mixed bag while fishing the Gulf Stream.

INSHORE – The nearshore artificial reefs and rocks have been producing some Flounder on live bait. Menhaden or Cigar Minnows are working well along with Sardines. Anglers in the region are still awaiting cooler temperatures to improve inshore fishing conditions. It can’t stay hot forever, right?

BAIT REPORT – Menhaden, Cigar Minnow, and Spanish Sardines can be caught on a Sabiki rig around the buoys and rock piles.

North Carolina’s fall season is probably it’s best time to fish. Call captain Bobby to book your trip before the good bite’s come and gone.

Surf City Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Closer wrecks and reefs are producing some big Spanish Mackerel and King Mackerel. Live baiting with Menhaden has been working well for them. There’s Amberjack around and some Cobia are showing up as well. Captain Bobby said the area could get lucky with a nice Cobia run this fall. The Gulf Stream has been fishing well for Sailfish and Wahoo. Typical tactics are still paying off, and that means trolling skirted Ballyhoo is going to be your best bet. There’s also some Blackfin Tuna around as are the Dolphin fish but, the Wahoo and Sailfish are proving to be better by the numbers.

INSHORE – There’s some good Redfish being caught on the inside. Trout are around with them as well. There’s also Flounder around the rocks on the oceanside and the inside has them around various structure as well. Carolina rigged Mullet is a great bait for Flounder. The Redfish are hitting Gulps and also topwater lures like top dogs in the early morning and late evenings.

BAIT REPORT – Menhaden and Finger Mullet are primarily the most abundant inshore baits.

North Carolina’s fall season is probably it’s best time to fish. Call captain Bobby to book your trip before the good bite’s come and gone.

Surf City Fishing Report

Inshore- Despite the bad weather, there’s a few Redfish biting on shore.

Offshore- The weather this week has been terrible. It’s been really tough getting offshore on account of the hard northeast wind. There have been one or two days where it had been possible to make it to the blue water and the Wahoo bite has been awesome. They’ve been hammering skirted Ballyhoo sea witches and planers.

Bait- If you can luck into a school of Ballyhoo, toss the cast net at them.

Surf City Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – The weather has been bad the last little while, but that hasn’t affected the bottom fishing any. It is still real good, even though there is a strong current running. Tons of Snapper and Grouper on live bait and cut bait when you are anchored over top of the rocks and ledges. The trolling, however, has been slow. There are a few billfish being caught but they are out real deep. Marlin, and Sailfish are slow too. Trolling close to the beach is really slow, but those people that are catching fish are catching Billfish on artificials and Ballyhoo.

INSHORE – Fishing is about the same inshore. The Redfish and About the same. Redfish and Flounder are active on artificials and live bait. The TRout bite has slowed right down. Most of the fish are being caught in the creeks. Stake out the mouth of a creek and you should find fish, especially when the tide is changing. The Flounder don’t like the heat and they are in the deeper parts of the way way.

BAIT REPORT – There is lots of bait right now and you should be able to catch it if you go looking for it.

Surf City Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – The main targets for right now are the King Mackerel, Mahi, and Sailfish. They are biting well on live bait – especially menhaden, cigar minnows,, and ballyhoo. They are also known to bite on dead Cigar Minnows, so if you can only get frozen, don’t be too upset. You are going to want to go 5-20 miles out for most of those fish. If you are inclined to go way offshore to target Billfish, White Marlin, and big Mahi, you are going to want to go out to the 50-60 mile range. If you decide you don’t want to burn that kind of gas, but still want to go offshore, then you should go bottom fishing. The Grouper and Snapper are biting right now on cut bait, and live bait. Try putting down the cut bait first because that will get everything’s attention, then drop down a live bait. As always, when bottom fishing you are going to want to favor baits that will stay on the hook, like squid.

INSHORE – Captain John was telling me that the inshore fishing has been on fire lately, especially the Redfish and Flounder. The Trout are picky right now, but there is more than enough Redfish and Flounder out there to keep you preoccupied. Flounder also make for great eating. Most of the fishing has been strong on artificial lures, and the Electric Chicken – yellow/green bottom with a pink top is really popular right now for one reason – it works.

BAIT REPORT – Bait is scattered right now, there isn’t tons of it around but it is definitely here and it is supporting the great inshore fishing that we have right now.

Surf City Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Captain John Mallette over at Knot Right Fishing Charters has seen a good Blue and White Marlin bite on black and purple lures. There are also a few MAhi and scattered Wahoo. Still a good white and blue marlin bite. Few mahi and scattered wahoo. Ballyhoo for those trolling. Few of the people fishing marlin using blue and purple. Offshore 50-60 miles. Grouper bite is really good, gag grouper closer to shore. Red grouper off. B liners triggers and snapper doing good. Dropping dead sardines and cigar minnows.

INSHORE – Heard that the redfish and flounder are biting good. Trout is sporadic. Most of those guys using artificials in the creeks. Creek mouths is really good and some of the bays. Beginning of the outgoing for creeks.

BAIT REPORT – Plenty of Menhaden, Mullet and Cigar Minnows.

Captain John loves nothing more than taking people out to catch fish, give him a call and treat yourself to a great day on the water.

Surf City Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Way offshore the weather has been bad lately making it hard for Captain John to get out but when he has the fishing has been great. The Billfish are super hot right now. Target them with artificials or medium Ballyhoo with Skirts. You’ll want to buy that frozen before you head out. Fo with blue and white for the skirts and purple and black for the artificials. Black Barks and MoldCraft are great ones to try. There are a few Wreckfish out there but it has been tough to find them. There are also occasional Sailfish as well as Dolphin, Blackfin Tuna and Wahoo. If you’d rather go bottom fishing you’re in for a treat!  There are lots of Grouper, B-liners, Snapper and Triggerfish. You’ll find these fish between 80-110 feet of water. They are biting well on Spanish Sardines, Squid wings and Cigar Minnows.

INSHORE – There are lots of Trout and Flounder and Redfish out there. You’ll want to check out the mouths of creeks in the back water for them. Since the water is warm deep holes are also a safe bet, especially for the Flounder. You’ll want to do most of your fishing on the end of the rising tide and the first 2-3 hours of the outgoing tide, as the tide has a big effect on the fishing. You’ll want to use lots of Storm Shrimp and Halo Shads.  Mirrolure Mirrodeans are also doing really well.

BAIT REPORT – There is a ton of bait all over. Some people are finding Menhaden in the river and the ocean.

North Topsail / Surf City Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Offshore you’ll find the bit on Kingfish is hot! You’ll want to troll for these with Ballyhoo which you’ll want to buy frozen from your local bait shop, or Cigar Minnows. There are also lots of King Mackerel and a mixed bag out there if you go a little further out.

INSHORE – A lot of anglers in the area are targeting Flounder. The Flounder are found near structure like bridges. They love to bite on live Shrimp and live Mud Minnows. Inshore you’ll also find Drum, Pinfish, Spot and Mullet. The Bluefish have also been particularly active right around the pier. Everyone has an opinion about the tide so it’s really more about preference and making sure the water is moving.

BAIT REPORT – You’ll find baitfish like Pinfish just about everywhere but they do move around so some days might be better than others.

Surf City Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Offshore you should use live bait to go after Grouper, King Mackerel, and Drum and Mahi Mahi. Gotcha lures also work well, especially if trolling for Mahi Mahi with frozen Ballyhoo, Spanish Sardines, Ribbon fish or Cigar Minnows. If you want to go out a little further to the 30 or 40 mile mark you’ll find Grouper and Vermillion Snapper, Black Bass, Grunts.

INSHORE – Blues and Mullet are biting well right now. Not the best time of the year, but as soon as it heats up there are more people swimming than there are fish. However you can expect to see some Flounder, Drum, Trout and Spanish. In the Inlets you’ll find some Cobia. If you can find a good weedline off the beach you might  find some Mahi Mahi. Inshore trolling is particularly effective on a flat bottom. Shrimp and Bloodworm are excellent for everything and  anything especially so for Blues.

BAIT REPORT – You’ll find plenty of Menhaden using a Sabiki.
