Sunset and Seal Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – Local trips are producing great catches throughout the afternoon this week. Great numbers of Sand Bass (Bass, Barred Sand) have been hooked in kelpy areas using live Sardine or Anchovy. Swimbaits are a good artificial alternative. Sculpin (Scorpionfish, California) are holding up on rocky, shallow bottom. A handful of Sheepshead (Sheepshead, California) and Blue Perch (Rockfish, Blue) have been landed as well.

OFFSHORE – This week we are finding outstanding numbers and limits of Yellowtail offshore. The overnight trips continue to produce well, especially on iron jigs suspended above bottom. Catalina Island has been holding great sizes, along with scattered Cuda (Barracuda, California). We hope to see this continue into the weekend. Trips have had quite a bit of action on three quarter day trips to Catalina Island as well. Decent numbers of Yellowtail have been caught along with Sheepshead (Sheepshead, California) on crabs, Calicos (Bass, Calico) on Anchovy or Sardine, Barracuda and Blue Perch (Rockfish, Blue). You can jig for the Perch on rocky bottom to hook them.

Sunset and Seal Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – Coastal afternoon trips are producing Sand Bass (Bass, Barred Sand) and Sculpin (Scorpionfish, California) and a few Sheepshead. Generally live bait such as Anchovy or Sardine will be best to hook them.

OFFSHORE – Beginning with overnight trips to the outer islands anglers are finding outstanding Yellowtail numbers along with Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Yellowtail & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Widow), Sheepshead (Sheepshead, California) and a couple of Barracuda (Barracuda, California). Heading towards the Catalina Islands the three quarter day trip produced better numbers of Rockfish including plenty of Red Snapper, a few Bocaccio, Sheepshead, Blue Perch, and Sculpin (Scorpionfish, California) on structured bottom. Squid on a jig is generally your best bet for the Rockfish.

Sunset and Seal Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – The half day trips around local coastal areas have produced great numbers of Bass (Bass, Barred Sand) that can be found in shallow, sandy areas. Small bait fish or Crabs will work well to hook them. A decent number of Blue Perch (Rockfish, Blue) have also been caught from shallow structure along with a few Sculpin (Scorpionfish, California) and Sheepshead (Sheepshead, California).

OFFSHORE – The three quarter day trips to Catalina Island is producing easy limits of Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Yellowtail & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Widow) this week. Plenty of Red Snapper and Blue Perch are in the mix which is promising for the Spring bite. Squid on a heavy jig will hook them from the bottom. Closer to shore Sheepshead (Sheepshead, California) are also on structure with a handful of Bass (Bass, Calico). Live bait such as Sardine or Anchovy will work well to hook them.

Sunset and Seal Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – The three quarter day trip is staying inside this week, however we are still finding plenty of fish. Decent Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Yellowtail & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Widow) have been caught around structure using jigs and Squid. There are prominent numbers of Red Snapper throughout. Shallower structure is holding Sculpin (Scorpionfish, California). Heading to sandy, softer bottom the Sanddab (Sanddab, Pacific) and Blue Perch bite is decent however anglers will soon be switching focus to the increasing Bass (Bass, Calico) bite around areas with kelp. Swimbaits, Anchovy and Sardine will be a good bet to hook them.

Sunset and Seal Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – There are still some Rockfish to be caught inshore as well this week, limits have been met throughout the day. You will still need to get right down to the bottom to hook them. Sculpin (Scorpionfish, California) are also being caught over structured bottom. Inshore Sheepshead (Sheepshead, California) are swimming a bit deeper structured areas. They typically prefer live bait.

OFFSHORE – Heading to San Nic Island we are finding some good sized fish during the day. Limits of Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Yellowtail & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Widow) have been hooked. Typically metal jigs tipped with Squid on the bottom is your best bet over rocky surfaces. A good number of Lingcod are mixed in along with a few Cabezon. Sheepshead (Sheepshead, California) are a bit closer in. They are holding up on structure preferring live bait.

OFFSHORE – Limits of Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Yellowtail & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Widow) fired off the opening day bite this week. Fantastic numbers are turning up along with handfuls of Cabezon and great catches of Lingcod. Metal jigs tipped with cut Squid on structured bottom has been the key to hooking them. On the way in anglers also hooked Sheepshead holding up on nearshore structure. They are also plentiful. We hope to see this continue to improve into the season.

Sunset and Seal Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – As you may have guessed, whether this week has kept anglers off the water. Dangerous conditions have shut down the coastline for miles so there hasn’t been a lot to report. Prior to these conditions Anglers were staying mostly inshore targeting Bass (Bass, Calico) and Sculpin (Scorpionfish, California). The Bass were hanging out in the kelpy areas as usual. There were some Sand Bass (Bass, Spotted Sand) to be caught on the flats as well. Bonito (Bonito, Pacific) and Halibut (Halibut, California) have been scattered. Along the shore there were plenty of Sanddab (Sanddab, Pacific).

OFFSHORE – Prior to the recent weather anglers were heading towards the Coronado Islands to fish Lingcod, Yellowtail , Sheepshead along with a variety of Rockfish (Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Brown). We hope to see this continue when the conditions are more favorable.

INSHORE – The rain is keeping a lot of anglers inside so far this week. After this passes we should see Halibut (Halibut, California), Bass (Bass, Spotted Sand) and Sculpin (Scorpionfish, California) as the main targets until Rockfish opens. If you can find a weather window you can target these species close to shore. Swimbaits were working well to hook them last week.

INSHORE – The Spotted Bay Bass (Bass, Spotted Sand) are doing really well in the local harbors around pilings and docks. They are hitting well on the Big Hammer 2 inch with an 8oz leadhead with a short hook. The 3 inch Big Hammers are also working with a quarter oz leadhead. Halibut (Halibut, California) are doing well on whites, reds and pinks for colors. Prior to the rain there were Barracuda (Barracuda, California) hitting swim baits on a quick retrieve.

OFFSHORE – Yellowtail are biting around Collenette. They are taking Yoyo irons that are producing 30 lbs fish.

INSHORE – It’s a bit stormy outside this week however anglers are still out there catching Bass (Bass, Barred Sand). The Calico (Bass, Calico) has also been steady recently. The numbers are terrific. Most are of legal size. Fish the local cuts using cut Squid to find them. We hope to see the weather clear up and the bite to continue into the weekend.

Sunset and Seal Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – Anglers are staying closer in on a three quarter day trip, fishing locally. The Sculpin (Scorpionfish, California) numbers are through the roof. Anglers are easily filling their bag with quality sizes as well. There are plenty of shorts mixed in to be released. The Bass (Bass, Spotted Sand & Bass, Calico) are consistent with about half being released. They are hiding in the kelp areas over soft bottom. Anchovy or Sardine are your best baits to use along with artificial swim baits as an alternative. Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Olive) provided great catch and release fishing this week. Cabezon are mixed in. Squid on a heavy jig will do the trick to hook them. Sanddab (Sanddab, Pacific) and Perch (Surfperch, Barred) are swimming the inshore in great numbers. Soft bottom is key. We hope to see this continue into the weekend.

Sunset and Seal Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – From shore anglers are fishing from the San Clemente Pier. Lugworms on the inside where the waves break are catching Perch (Surfperch, Sand) and Croaker. Anglers fishing farther down the pier are casting Anchovies or Squid for a good Sand Bass (Bass, Spotted Sand) bite. The jetty is hit or miss for Sand Bass. They are biting well in the harbor. The surf is a bit slow. You can catch legal Halibut (Halibut, California) off the beach with Lucky Craft Lures. Random reports of Perch also have been caught.

OFFSHORE – Sculpin (Scorpionfish, California) are decent when boats can get out. We are seeing limits or near limits.

INSHORE – In the harbor we are seeing Spotted Bay Bay, Sand Bass and Calico Bass (Bass, Spotted Sand, Bass, Calico) off the jetty. They bite best on 3 inch Big Hammer Swimbaits with no more than 15 lb line. Swing a hook set on any little tap as they are quick to spit out any artificials as soon as they realize it’s not a bait. You can easily up your percentages of hooked fish by not being patient on the hookset.

OFFSHORE – Bluefin (Tuna, Bluefin) have still been caught at the Tanner Bank taking Squid in the early morning. Go with a 3/O or 4/O circle hook and a 1-3 ounce sliding glow egg sinker. 200-250 Glow Flatfalls are also productive.

BAIT REPORT – Squid can be caught on Squid Jigs.

OFFSHORE – On a three quarter day trip toward Catalina Island we have found a decent amount of Yellowtail so far. There have also been a few slim catches of Rockfish (Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper). They are slowing down a bit.

INSHORE – The Calico (Bass, Calico) bite has continued into this week. The sizes are varied but the numbers are outstanding. Angler are easily catching limits. Anchovy or Sardine are the go-to live bait choice along with similar soft plastics. Check the weedlines, rocky areas and structures to find them. There are also great numbers of Bonito (Bonito, Pacific) turning up, even on a half day trip. If you are targeting them try using plugs or live Anchovy.

OFFSHORE – We are seeing a lot more action out of Newport this week! The Yellowtail bite is heating up and the numbers are increasing along with the size. Search the offshore kelp paddies to find them as well as around the islands. They can be caught on iron jigs or live Mackerel for the best bite. Rockfish (Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Black) are consistent into this week.

INSHORE – Shore fishing has been pretty slow this week. Normally we see better numbers of Surfperch (Surfperch, Barred), Corbina and Halibut (Halibut, Pacific). The Bass (Bass, Calico) fishing is decent however. Catalina has good Calico fishing along with some Yellowtail. Squid, Sardines or Anchovies are working well to hook them. Mint Caddy jigs are also a great alternative.

OFFSHORE – Big Bluefin (Tuna, Bluefin) are running however they are hard to get to bite.

Sunset and Seal Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – This week we saw anglers heading out on a three quarter day trip to Catalina Islands where a solid number of Yellowtail were caught. Generally they will go after live Mackerel or live Squid. The Calico (Bass, Calico) were a bit scattered in the area however there were some reports of Sheepshead along structures and Bonito (Bonito, Pacific) off the shore. The Blue Perch (Rockfish, Blue) were biting well and we received consistent numbers overall. Towards San Clemente anglers didn’t find as hot of a Yellowtail bite however the Calicos were on fire! Swimbaits are generally a good setup to consider. If you are fishing live bait try throwing on an Anchovy. Bonito has some solid numbers in this area as well. The Blue Perch were outstanding.

INSHORE – Calicos (Bass, Calico) of all sizes were hungry. One or two followed any hooked fish. Yellowtails were around 5-8 to a dozen lbs along the shoreline kelps or structured areas. Mackerel (Mackerel, Pacific) were taking bait were tough at the harbor entrance. The bait barge had anchovies I think.

OFFSHORE – Light overcast this morning, seas have this small short period mixed swell to them, west and south otherwise smooth and calm. Reported water temps on the outside 289 were down to 66 degrees and the Ridge 181 warmed up at 71 degrees. Boaters on the 209 said it was quiet no bird life. Inside there are a few birds and yet no Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin & Tuna, Bluefin) sighted yet. 277 had some mammals with a bit more sea life. Later, Bluefins were flying out of the water everywhere.

Sunset and Seal Beach Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Anglers are moving back to the morning bite this week as there is a bit of overcast while the seas are calm. The skies are improving by mid morning. There has been a good bite of Bluefin Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin). There seem to be a lot of fish running however they are quick this week so not everyone is landing them. To the South we are seeing areas filled with Yellowfin (Tuna, Yellowfin) as well but again, they are a bit sporadic as far as landing them go. Earlier in the week we were finding Marlin (Billfish – Marlin, Blue), Yellowtail from 45-40 lbs, and Wahoo up to 65 lbs. They were swimming the outer banks for the rocks and were putting up a good fight.

BAIT REPORT – Bait is beginning to show up offshore.

Boats are talking 181 – 182, the 43 fathom areas and towards the beach from there. Yellowtails big grumpy ones, some small yellow or Big Eastern Pacific Bonito (Bonito, Pacific) roaming around too. There are still some of the big Bluefin around.

INSHORE – Took my yacht out early this morning ( first time in several months) shake down- all working fine and no leaks! Calico’s (Bass, Calico) were biting especially on the New Penny colored Jerk Shads. No big fish but good number of em. Schools of small Anchovies just south of the Newport’s Harbor. Dana Point and below reported to be jugged with anchovies. Good news for the later part of the season for the Marlin (Billfish – Marlin, Blue) fishing

OFFSHORE – Nice weather light south wind this morning some coastal clouds which seems to be going away mid morning good sized ground swell from the south has the surfers out a smaller swell from the west, seas fair otherwise. Quite a few boats out of SD waters seeing a few 30 lb Bluefin (Tuna, Bluefin) schools no bites – porpoise and birds reported but not much said yet about any Tunas caught boats ranged from the 209 southwards to the border and the 302/ 429

INSHORE – There is a ton of action from the inshore this week! We are seeing a great number of Yellowtail so far. They are up to 30 lbs already. Bonito (Bonito, Pacific) have also been hooked and the numbers are steady. Closer to shore the Calicos (Bass, Calico) have been hiding in the kelp and grass flats. The numbers are on fire this week. Some are being released but there are some keepers if you put some time in. A handful of Sand Bass (Bass, Spotted Sand) have also turned up. Sheepshead have been hit and miss but if you are targeting them you can find them. The most popular trip has been the half day.

OFFSHORE – Sunny, pale blue skies this morning – first time in a long time – light marine haze along the coastline and a light south wind at 2.5 knots, seas fair, lots of boats heading out for the weekend already. Although I didn’t hear much from the AIS, the party boats out of SD were fishing the 9 Mile bank chasing the Bluefins (Tuna, Bluefin) on the deeper outside shelf of it and the 302 area had boats working there as well. The same old afternoon wind came up along with the afternoon marine haze, light chop hope to hear more tomorrow best of luck if you get out this weekend especially dads. INSHORE – The focus has been mainly on the inshore nearshore for most anglers this week. The Yellowtail have been hit and miss a bit farther out however if anglers are looking to put some time in they’ll be able to find fish. Sheepshead have been swimming the structures as usual. The numbers are decent. Bass (Bass, Calico) are hiding in the kelp and can be easily found in the grassy areas. Sculpin (Scorpionfish, California) have been the hot bite this week from the rocky bottom areas. A few Barracuda (Barracuda, California) have also been brought in however they are not consistent.

INSHORE – Closer to shore the Sheepshead and Bass (Bass, Calico) are consistent. The sizes are great as well. Sculpin can also still be found around the rocky bottoms. They seem to be a never fail catch. We expect this to continue into the weekend.

OFFSHORE – The full day trip has been hit and miss as of late. We are seeing a wide variety of fish turn up. Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Greenspotted & Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Copper) are hitting but the numbers are still quite slow depending on the day. Yellowtail and Lingcod are few and far between however they are out there for anglers willing to put some time in. A few White Seabass (Sea Bass, White) have also been hooked but, again, are not consistent. Ocean Whitefish have been a popular catch as of late. The numbers are slim but they are turning up quite often.

Sunset and Seal Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – The half day trip is producing a great variety of fish so far this week. Sand Bass (Bass, Spotted Sand) have made an appearance along with a huge number of Kelp Bass (Bass, Calico) that were released. Sheepshead have been caught around the rocky areas and places holding structure. A few Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown) have turned up however the numbers are definitely not consistent. A single Blue Perch (Surfperch, Striped) was caught in the past few days and we hope to see the numbers increase as the season progresses.

OFFSHORE – Moving a bit farther out the nearshore is holding some great Yellowtail and although they are not thick yet we are seeing some nice numbers. Bass (Bass, Calico) have also turned up in a bit deeper water along with some Bonito (Bonito, Pacific) a bit farther out. A handful of Cuda (Barracuda, California) are swimming this week and the sizes are typical of the season at this point. Towards the offshore the Yellowtail are hot and the Bass are even hotter. The numbers of everything including the Bonito are better the farther out you go. We are also seeing some Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Starry & Bocaccio & Rockfish, Copper) and Whitefish that continue to increase in size.

A few Ocean Whitefish have also made an appearance this week. We expect the bite to continue into the weekend.

OFFSHORE – Farther from the shore around the San Clemente Island area we are seeing Rockfish (Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Vermillion & Bocaccio) biting. The numbers are fantastic and the variety is great. The Ocean Whitefish bite is also on fire on the two day trip. Yellowtail are also heating up in this area along with a solid number of Calicos (Bass, Calico) and Sheepshead. The afternoon bite is more productive. Yellowtail are on the West end, backside of the Catalina Islands, however they are small firecrackers from 4-10 lbs. The better sizes are off San Clemente Island. The afternoon bite is better for them as well. Bottom fishing is strong this week. Rockfishing (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Copper) is great in the morning. Anglers are looking anywhere from 150-250 to find them using Squid or flat fall jigs on the bottom. Sunset and Seal Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – Here local off Long Beach and Newport area it is all the bottom fishing seen. It is still too early for our normal Barracuda (Barracuda, Great), Bass (Bass, Striped) and inshore Yellowtail. Our waters are just too cold at the moment. We have had an AWESOME whale watching season off our coast these past few months. On a few of my personal trips I’ve seen a ton of Grey whales and we had a super close up experience with a huge 40ft Humpback adult female and her baby as were just drifting off the Laguna beach area. We were watching a large bird school doing some, to say the least weird activity on the water and bingo big mama and her baby surfaced to say hello. It was a very special moment for my family and I. The area down off San Diego the water is still on the cold side. All my captain brothers are chomping at the bit to catch the first tuna of the season. This area is arguably some of the BEST offshore Tuna fishing anywhere in North America.

OFFSHORE – Our bottom rockfish season just opened back up on March 1st and it is absolutely outstanding fishing right now in between storm fronts !! The Channel Islands area is producing some some big quality Red Snapper (Rockfish, Black), Copper rockfish (Rockfish, Copper) and all the assorted bottom grabbers. If you really want to have some fun, grab your biggest jig, tip it with Squid and it is Game ON on some super very nice sized Lingcod. This year we had one of our best seasons on the Pacific Spiny Lobster. It seemed like before and right after our big storms would move through the bugs would crawl like I’ve never seen before. This season we saw a lot of shorts but there was some big quality that was a norm almost every night. At Catalina island we are seeing some nice early schools of 10-15 lb Yellowtail swimming around. These are great signs to see in March. Otherwise it is all bottom fishing at the island.

INSHORE – Halibut (Halibut, Pacific) are beginning to come in this week which is very exciting for anglers in this area. 3 and 3.5 inch big hammer lures in red or green will do well to hook them. They can be found around the jetties and river mouths during high tide. Dragging the lure along the bottom usually attracts them. There are some Bonito, Pacific and Yellowtail biting right off the shore as well.

OFFSHORE – The Yellowtail numbers have been good for anglers on the overnight trips. There were also some Bass, Kelp caught on these trips. We’re finally starting to roll out of the winter pattern a little bit.

Sunset and Seal Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – We are beginning to see the Bass, Spotted Sand bite fire back up for the season. Though still slow they are showing up in decent sizes. Being scattered the best bet to reeling one in will be with live bait which provides an irresistible scent on top of an active moving bait. Shrimp and minnows are great baits to use. Surfperch, Sand are also still being caught from the beaches. They are holding up in pockets and holes above sandy areas. Anglers can easily sight fish for them however being small they are not generally the target for most. Sculpin have been hot this week and the bite has improved from last. Though they are venomous they provide the most action for anglers at this time of the year. Swimming fairly close to the surface most topwater lures are the most productive method to bag a few good sizes. A half day trip is all anglers need at this time of year to be able to hook a few fish.

Sunset and Seal Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – The half day trip has been producing some great fish this week on the daytime bite. Scupin are turning up in good numbers so far and anglers are reeling in over 60. They are swimming fairly close to the surface so topwater and lightweight lures are working well to hook them. We are also seeing plenty of Bass, Barred Sand turn up in the double digits as well. They are preparing to move into the deeper water for the spring to spawn. You can find them towards sand and mud flats off the beaches. They prefer live baits or active lures as they are attracted to the movement. You can send this to the bottom right below the birds. Sardines, Anchovies, Squid or cut bait will work well. Soft plastics are a great alternative. There are a few Surfperch, Barred hanging around however they are not the target for most anglers. There have been a few Croaker, Spotfin caught as well however they were more of an incidental catch at this point and not as common for this area.

Sunset and Seal Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – The bite in this area has been great so far this week. We are getting reports of tons of Sculpin, Sand Bass (Bass, Barred Sand) and a single Surfperch, Barred. The Sculpin are hitting in the shallow tide pools near the surface. They will usually swim above rocky areas so they have a quick place to hide if needed. Their camouflage coloring helps them blend in with reefs, wrecks and barnacles in deeper water. Small jigs will generally do the trick to catch them however not many anglers will specifically target them due to their venomous nature and lack of culinary use. The Bass typically love smaller live bait or similar artificial lures such as live Shrimp or alternatively a Vudu Shrimp by Egret. They are the main focus for most anglers this week. The early morning has produced the best bite.

INSHORE – Most anglers are staying fairly close to the inside this week. The best fishing has been on the twilight so far and this has been very productive. Anglers are seeing Bass, Barred Sand in a spotty bite but good sizes. Swimbaits and spoons are generally great lures to throw. Surfperch, Barred have remained consistent throughout this week. We are seeing great numbers of Sculpin that are located a bit farther from the coast over the rocky areas. They swim fairly close to the surface so topwater lures or lightweight baits will attract them. There are also some Croaker, Spotfin that have turned up in shallow holes too. Generally this is a species mainly caught in the fall months however we are still seeing some turn up even in harbors on sandy ground.

INSHORE – The focus has mostly been on the inshore so far this week. There have been a few reports of Bass, Barred Sand, and a single catch of Surfperch, Barred. Throughout the nearshore we are seeing some Sculpin this week. It is best to look for these guys around any structures along the bottom. There are no reports of Sanddab, Pacific as of yet.

OFFSHORE – There has not been a whole lot of reports from the offshore so far this week. We expect to see Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion and Rockfish, Starry) turn up by the weekend. Don’t forget, they are catch and release only. If you’re heading out to target them be sure to bring Squid or Sardines with you to use on the troll. There are also great numbers of Sanddab, Pacific and Surfperch, Barred. There are no signs of Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Starry) so far but we do not expect that they have disappeared yet.

OFFSHORE – Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Snapper, Bocaccio & Lingcod) of course are still plentiful and should not be difficult to catch this week. Anglers are catching their limit so far. INSHORE – There is still some action this week for coastal fishermen. Rockfish, Bocaccio are turning up along with a solid Whitefish bite. Sheepshead have become spotty however are continually decent sizes. The Yellowtail are not as frequent so far this week however we hope this will increase for the holiday. There have been no signs of Bass, Striped or Halibut, Pacific yet but we expect that they are still swimming and can be caught on live or artificial Crabs.

OFFSHORE – Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Snapper, Bocaccio & Lingcod) of course are still plentiful and should not be difficult to catch this week. Live bait is always the first preference for them. They are still heating up and anglers don’t have to go too far out to find them.

BAIT REPORT – Sardines and Mackerel continue to be hooked on Sabiki Rigs outside the harbor by the buoys this week.

Sunset and Seal Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Yellowtail bite has heated up on Rocky Point this week. Anglers are weighing in fish up to 35 lbs on a drop loop in 150 ft of water using Mackerel or Sardines. There is some Striper (Bass, Striped) activity moving in this week here and there. They have been on the beaches and are weighing in around 10-15 lbs. There are some Halibut, Pacific mixed in with them as well. Lucky Crabs are the best bait to catch either fish. The smelt or grunion color is the most productive so far.

OFFSHORE – There is finally a Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Lingcod) bite in this area. It’s not heated up yet however it is there for anglers putting their time in. There has been no sign of Tuna or Skipjack yet this week however we won’t be surprised to see one turn up over the weekend.

BAIT REPORT – Sardines and Mackerel can be hooked on Sabiki Rigs outside the harbor by the buoys this week. Stop in to Baja Fish Gear and get your Fishing License before the end of the year to receive a $10 gift certificate to use in January!

Sunset and Seal Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Yellowtail are biting pretty well so far this week. Yoyo jigs and JRI jigs are extremely productive to catch them. The bite has begun to head up and is expected to continue throughout the rest of the week. Anglers are also seeing Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Lingcod) showing up along the coast. Green Mackerel or heavy artificials are the best bet to hook them. Swimbaits have been a great alternative and are hitting the larger sizes so far. As far as live bait goes, Squid and Mackerel seem to be attracting some fish however the artificials are the first choice this week.

OFFSHORE – The Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin) and Skipjack continue a solid bite so far this week. The sizes are fairly good, nothing overly gigantic but still keepers. They are huddled up in the back in the warmer pockets of water. Most anglers are light lining for them and finding quite a bit of productivity. This bite is expected to continue into the weekend.

Sunset and Seal Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – The action inshore has been pretty good this week as fishermen have moved from targeting Rockfish to Bass. Calicos (Bass, Calico) have been hitting well so far on swimbaits, chunk Squid or Live Sardines. Both live and artificial are equally as productive this week. The biggest sizes of Calico are coming up on big, live Mackerel though. This bite in particular is on fire. There have also been reports of Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Lingcod) swimming the coast. Heavy stuff is working well for these fish. Green Mackerel or artificials are the preference. Squid have moved to the beaches and Sea Bass, Black have followed. Swimbaits are turning up the best results however anglers are using Squid and Mackerel under balloons or floats on the anchor as well.

OFFSHORE – The nicer weather has fired the Tuna, Yellowfin are back up in some of the warmer pockets of water. The bite has been roughly a 3 quarter day trip. Anglers continue to troll for Tuna and using Pink lures to hook them.

BAIT REPORT – Live baiters have been hooking Mackerel and it is working well for both inshore and offshore fish this week.

Sunset and Seal Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – The action has picked up in this area lately. Yellowtail has been doing extremely well this week. Jigs have been the best bet to hook them using anything in scrambled egg. Most anglers have been targeting Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Lingcod) having quite a few Lings reeled in each trip. Heavy stuff is working best. Green Mackerel or artificials similar to Squid have had the highest productivity.

OFFSHORE – Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin) and Skipjack are still holding up on the West end of Catalina. There have been some reports of Marlin, Striped in the same area. Anglers have been using Pink lures to hook them. Tuna have been caught mostly on the troll this week. Lobster have been doing well around the islands but not the shorelines so far.

BAIT REPORT – There have been no reports of bait running so far this week.

Sunset and Seal Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – There is not a whole lot of action inshore this week. The Bass, Calico are biting really well just about everywhere from the beaches to the coast. Anglers are using live bait in the kelp and finding this method the most effective. There are also reports of some Yellowtail moving as both the bite and size have increased from last week.

OFFSHORE – The activity seems to be winding down for anglers at this point. Surprisingly there are still reports of some small groups of Tuna, Yellowfin between the islands. They’re spotty but coming in with good sizes. There are also plenty of Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper & Bocaccio) coming in along with some spotty Lingcod. The water is still warm so these fish have not yet moved out. The warm water has even brought in a report of some Wahoo on the troll.

BAIT REPORT – There are still some scattered Mackerel swimming the coast however they are becoming more difficult to find at this point. Keep your eye out for some great Black Friday sales coming up soon at Turner’s Outdoorsman!

Sunset and Seal Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Yellowtail have begun to move into the Rockcod (Rockfish, Vermillion) area and have been getting better everyday. Anglers are using heavy yoyo irons to drop to the bottom and wind up really quick. This had been a successful method so far. There have also been Calico Bass swimming the beaches up and down the coast. They are hiding in the kelp however anglers are using lucky craft jerkbaits, zoom flutes or various swimbait to bring them out. Of course, Rockfish (Rockfish, Red & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Starry) are also biting on the bottom. They are taking Mackerel so it is a good time for anglers to take advantage.

OFFSHORE – Fishing has been great in this area. Marlin, Striped have had a fantastic bite as of recently on Mackerel. Anglers are using the live bait and pulling up on boiling fish, or alternatively on bigger Marlin jigs if needed. There have also been reports of Wahoo day to day. They are becoming scattered however there seems to be at least one a day. The Hoo are generally found anywhere from the banks at 100 ft to 5 miles out at a couple thousand feet. Boaters should be looking for birds, kelp, warm water or current breaks.

BAIT REPORT – Mackerel are scattered up and down the coast but for live baiters who can get their hands on some they are working well for inshore and offshore bait. Sardines are running on the barge and are also a great choice of live bait for this area. OF NOTE – Mark your calendars for December 5th as Hogan’s Bait and Tackle host their annual sale with discounts throughout the store, unbelievable blow-out table with lots of amazing deals as well as a FREE BBQ starting at noon.

Sunset and Seal Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – The tough weather has cooled the water causing some fish to move out. There are some sporadic Yellowtail as well as very little Pelagic Fish as they have moved to the day and a half range. Most anglers are in Rockfish (Rockfish, Copper & Bocaccio) mode and hooking Lingcod as well by drifting over structures. Calico Bass are hitting around the beaches amongst some Yellows. They are chasing swim baits with a leadhead and are hiding in kelp stringers and structures.

OFFSHORE – This week the weather has been less than ideal in this area. There have been no reports of anglers making their way out in the deep water. Therefore, if no one is fishing, no one is catching. Previously Marlin (Marlin, Striped) and the Wahoo bite have been extremely close. Fishing structures with deep diving lures like Bonito Jigs were working best for the ‘Hoo. There had been a few reports of smaller local Tuna, Yellowfin and increases in size farther out by the channel islands.

BAIT REPORT – There are Sardines in the bay as well as some Mackerel being caught on Sabiki rods. As usual, anglers can follow the birds to find bait.
