Santa Monica/Ocean Park Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – The focus in this area has no doubt been on the hot Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Yellowtail & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Widow) bite this week. Structured bottom offshore has been producing well for anglers throwing jigs tipped with Squid. The numbers of Reds are steadily increasing while even a few Bocaccio and Lingcod have been landed. The twilight trips are having no issues reaching quick limits.

OFFSHORE – Into this week anglers continue to use Squid on metal jigs to target Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Yellowtail & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Widow) on structured bottom. Lingcod are still slim however they are beginning to make an appearance.

OFFSHORE – For offshore trips this week, it has been no surprise that Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Yellowtail & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Widow) have been the main target anglers on the evening trips. The numbers are decent and even a few Lingcod have made an appearance. Squid on the bottom is always the key to hooking them. A handful of Sculpin (Scorpionfish, California) were also caught in shallower, rocky areas.

Santa Monica/Ocean Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – Closer to shore the bite is not quite as hot however there are still some fish to catch from boats and shore. Sheepshead (Sheepshead, California) are holding up on nearshore structure. Generally they prefer Crabs. Bass (Bass, Spotted Sand & Bass, Calico) have been swimming the kelpy areas in shallow, warmer water as they prepare for Spring. Live bait such as Sardine or Anchovy work well in attracting them to the hook. Sculpin (Scorpionfish, California) are here and there over shallow, rocky bottom.

OFFSHORE – Nicer weather has arrived and anglers are focusing on the Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Yellowtail & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Widow). Sending Squid tipped on a metal jig down to rocky bottom will fire up the bite. Sizes are good and numbers are even better. We are still waiting for an increased Lingcod bite however we should see that closer to Spring. The predominant bite has been of Red Snapper.

Santa Monica/Ocean Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – Trips are staying a bit closer to shore this week although this has not hindered the bite at all. Easy limits of Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Yellowtail & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Widow) have begun and they are great sizes. Send your metal jig down to the rocky bottom and tip your hook with some cut Squid. You won’t be waiting long for a bite, that’s for sure! There have also been catches of Sculpin (Scorpionfish, California) and Sheepshead (Sheepshead, California) on live bait around shallower, rocky structure. We hope to see this continue into next week.

OFFSHORE – We are seeing great conditions for Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Yellowtail & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Widow) opening this week. We saw tons of easy limits overall with a handful of Lingcod mixed in. It’s always a good idea to tip a metal jig with cut Squid and get it right to the bottom of structured areas. Anglers are fishing Catalina Island for a great bite on the early morning trip. We are also seeing a few nice Halibut (Halibut, California) and Sea Bass (Sea Bass, White). Sheepshead are holding up on nearshore structure.

Santa Monica/Ocean Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – As you may have guessed, whether this week has kept anglers off the water. Dangerous conditions have shut down the coastline for miles so there hasn’t been a lot to report. Those who have made it out in the few weather windows are saying fairly close. Sculpin (Scorpionfish, California), and Bass (Bass, Calico & Bass, Spotted Sand) are the main targets on a day trip from late morning to early afternoon. Generally swim baits or live bait such as Anchovy or Sardine will work well to hook the bass in kelp, shallow areas. The Sculpin typically hold up on rocky bottom. Keep your eye on the weather if you are heading out and make sure you have safety plans in order.

Santa Monica/Ocean Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – The rain is keeping a lot of anglers inside so far this week. After this passes we should see Halibut (Halibut, California), Bass (Bass, Spotted Sand), Calicos (Bass, Calico) and Sculpin (Scorpionfish, California) as the main targets until Rockfish opens. Swimbaits were working well to hook them last week. Triggerfish can be caught on the bottom. If you can find a weather window you can target these species close to shore. Sanddab (Sanddab, Pacific) are closer in too.

Santa Monica/Ocean Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – The fishing is really slow this week. To the North towards Newport the Spotted Bay Bass (Bass, Spotted Sand) are doing really well in the local harbors around pilings and docks. They are hitting well on the Big Hammer 2 inch with an 8oz leadhead and a short hook. The 3 inch Big Hammers are also working with a quarter oz leadhead. Halibut (Halibut, California) are doing well on whites, reds and pinks for colors. Prior to the rain there were Barracuda (Barracuda, California) hitting swim baits on a quick retrieve. To the South there is a few Halibut (Halibut, California) that can be caught from the surf in between the storms. They are taking swimbaits.

INSHORE – Sculpin, Sand Bass and Calicos (Bass, Calico) have been caught this week. Live Anchovy are working well for Sculpin. The bigger fish are staying deep. Sardine are a good alternative. Most fish are coming up on leadheads. Sand Bass (Bass, Barred Sand) are still coming up mostly on Anchovy. They are with the Calicos from 50-90 ft. Triggerfish are biting off the bottom. The rain has shut some of the bite down.

INSHORE – Anglers have been staying inshore and local for the most part this week. The focus has been on the Bass (Bass, Calico & Bass, Spotted Sand) bite. Search the kelpy areas to find them using Swim baits, Sardine or Anchovy. The numbers are a bit scattered but if you can put some time in you’ll find them. Sculpin (Scorpionfish, California) have been turning up in outstanding numbers so far. Search shallow, rocky bottom to find them. Perch (Surfperch, Barred) have been caught on the beach.

INSHORE – This week the morning trip has been most productive for Sheepshead (Sheepshead, California) and Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue). They are both loving Stripped Squid on a metal jig. If you send it right down to the bottom on rocky structures you’ll find the best bite. Boccaccio have been caught in decent numbers as well. Lingcod are becoming a bit scattered. Closer to shore the Sand Bass (Bass, Barred Sand) are here and there. Search sandy bottoms to find them using Sardines or Anchovy.

Santa Monica/Ocean Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – The half day morning trip is producing a great number of Barred Bass (Bass, Barred Sand) this week. Sardine or Anchovy generally do well to hook them however Swimbaits are a great alternative. Search for them in deeper holes as the temperature cools. They will move to the warmer water. Kelpy areas are best. Sheepshead (Sheepshead, California) are turning up on structure. Crabs and Anchovy are best. A handful of Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue) and Lingcod turning up. Search structured areas for them as well. They prefer stripped Squid on a jig. They generally swim right along the bottom so you may need a heavier jig to get right down to the bottom.

OFFSHORE – The three quarter day trip is hooking a nice variety of fish. Lingcod are a bit hit or miss. The Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue) bite is steady. Metal jigs will get right down to the bottom on structure to find them. Search bridges and islands for the best areas. Wrecks and reefs will also be productive. Stripped squid or Anchovy are your best bet to hook them. A few Sheepshead (Sheepshead, California) are mixed in. Great numbers of both Vermillion and misc. fish are turning up.

Santa Monica/Ocean Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – Closer to shore the there are a few Rockfish to be caught on structured bottom. We are also seeing Sheepshead (Sheepshead, California) turning up in similar areas. Squid on a heavy jig continues to be the best bet for both. Sand Bass (Bass, Spotted Sand) are slowing down. Anchovy or Sardine are best to hook them in kelpy areas.

OFFSHORE – The bite is beginning to slow down into this week. The Rockfish (Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Olive & Lingcod) bite is still steady however we are not seeing the numbers we were. The Lingcod are consistent. Metal jigs tipped with Squid or alternatively Anchovy will snag the best bite. You should make sure to send your setup right down to hard, rocky bottom to find the fish.

OFFSHORE – Red Snapper (Rockfish, Vermillion) and Lingcod are doing well along with big Sheepshead (Sheepshead, California) this week. Live Squid is working best to hook EVERYTHING! OFFSHORE – The Catalina Island is fishing well for Bonito (Bonito, Pacific) and Yellowtail. Towards Santa Cruz we saw some of the best Bonito we have seen in years. The sizes are outstanding. Everyone is focused on Rockfish in that area so the Bonito are doing well. Most local boats aren’t heading that far. They are up to 8 lbs.

Santa Monica/Ocean Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – Good numbers of Calicos (Bass, Calico) have turned up for those searching the grassy areas inshore. As the temperature increases we will see them holding up in deeper, cooler areas. The best time to fish for them will be early morning or later into the evening once the heat has dissipated at bit. When they are scattered, live bait will be your best bet. Sardines are generally quite productive.

OFFSHORE – The Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Olive) have turned back on this week! The numbers are great once again. If you can get your hands on live Anchovies or Sardines they will be productive. Even stripped Squid will work. They Yellowtail bite is hit and miss from day to day. Try hitting them with a Mackerel on a circle hook.

Santa Monica/Ocean Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – Anglers are sticking closer in this week however we are still finding a good bite of fish. The Yellowtail in the nearshore have been coming up with solid number so far. Sardines or Mackerel are great baits to hook them. You can also try Iron jigs if you’re not using live bait. Bonito (Bonito, Pacific) are also swimming a bit deeper. Sardines or Anchovy on the troll will be productive. Closer to shore anglers are searching grassy areas for Calicos (Bass, Calico) that are taking small Anchovy or Sardines.

Santa Monica/Ocean Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – We are finding some great productivity from the half day trips this week. Yellowtail have been biting well and coming up in consistent numbers throughout the nearshore. Anglers can search the kelp and rocky areas where the Yellowtail will usually be hiding. Soft iron jigs are usually a good choice to use however you will have to experiment with how much kick you will need for your retrieve depending on the fish. The deeper you fish, the heavier the iron. As far as live go, Mackerel is the bait of choice. Squid can be a good alternative. Either bait on a circle hook will get the job done. A great bite of Calico Bass (Bass, Calico) have also come up this week. Anglers can chum with some small anchovies around kelpy areas to find them. They love Big Hammer Swimbaits in Mackerel and Sardine colors. Throw it on a jighead and you’ll be hooked! Spoons and lugs will also be productive. As far as live bait goes Anchovies and Sardines are the best! Bonito (Bonito, Pacific) and Lingcod are scattered this week. There has also been a few bites of Halibut (Halibut, Pacific) however nothing in great numbers.

Santa Monica/Ocean Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – It is no surprise that the Sculpin (Scorpionfish, California) continue to bite from the rocky areas this week. We aren’t seeing the numbers we were however anglers that are looking for a solid hit can definitely target this fish. Calicos (Bass, Calico) have been steadily improving over the past few weeks. We are beginning to see consistent numbers and the sizes are decent. A few Sheepshead have turned up however they seem to have been incidental catches. They are out there for anglers targeting them.

OFFSHORE – The main focus for offshore anglers has been the Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Greenspotted) and Lingcod this week. The numbers are great so far, ending in triple digits. There have also been a few catches of Yellowtail hooked as well. They have not yet heated up for the season however this is a good sign of a Summer pattern. Ocean Whitefish are swimming the reefs however they don’t seem to be a main target for a lot of anglers just yet. Bonito (Bonito, Pacific) and Barracuda numbers are slowly increasing to a good amount and we expect to see this improve over the next few weeks

INSHORE – Things are beginning to heat up throughout the inshore this week with the return of Bass (Bass, Calico) in some decent numbers so far. The sizes have been fair however all have been released. We are also seeing Sculpin, Perch (Surfperch, Barred), and a few Sanddab (Sanddab, Pacific) in various shallow water throughout the inshore. You can find these fish in holes over rocky or soft bottom however we expect that the main focus will be on the Bass bite this week.

OFFSHORE – Things are slowing down in the offshore as of late however anglers who put their time in can still take advantage of a few fish swimming. There are reports of a spotty Triggerfish, Gray bite along with a few Yellowtail this week. The sizes are decent however the numbers are low so a full day of fishing may be required.

Santa Monica/Ocean Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – Things are heating up in this area as of late. We are beginning to see the return of Bass, Spotted Sand and Bass, Calico to the shallow waters. The sizes are still quite small at this point and the bite is spotty however they are there for anglers ready to put some time in. Like most Bass a live bait is your best bet at hooking them. A strong scent and active movement will attract the fish and hopefully land you a good size. Sculpin are the next most prominent fish in the area. Though they are not the target for most anglers due to their venomous nature, they can make for a fun catch on the topwater. Lightweight lures and small bait will be productive for these fish. Look for them in shallow water over rocky bottoms. The Sanddab, Pacific bite has continued into this week and has not slowed down. Shallow pockets in sandy areas will be holding the best fish. We are also seeing some Surfperch, Barred turn up. Their numbers are slowly dwindling however the size is remaining consistent to last week. We expect to see these numbers continue into the weekend.

INSHORE – The weather has been hit and miss in this area as of late. We are seeing tons of Scorpionfish, California turning up in the double digits. Though they are not targeted by most anglers due to their lack of culinary use they can still be a pretty fun fish to catch. There are some Bass, Barred Sand turning up. The bite is not hot however they are there for anglers who put their time in. They prefer anything live such as a Shrimp or small Anchovy. Bass, Kelp are hiding lower in the water in the grassy flats. They are slightly more plentiful however still not hot and can be caught on the same baits. There are still tons of Sanddab, Pacific swimming this week. They swim fairly close to the surface and are rarely difficult to catch.

Santa Monica/Ocean Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – There are plenty of fish running the inshore so far this week. We are seeing a great number of Sculpin hovering over wrecks as well as both Bass, Calico and Bass, Barred Sand hanging around the grassy areas and kelp patties. They will generally take live bait or similar artificials such as live Shrimp or Vudu Shrimp by Egret. There are still tons of Sanddab, Pacific and some anglers are even getting into the triple digits. They are a little more fun to catch as they will eat just about anything as long as it is live. A few Surfperch, Barred have turned up however the numbers are low and we do not expect to see this increase for the weekend.

January 22, 2016

Santa Monica/Ocean Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – Anglers in this area are staying fairly close to shore this week however there are some great catches in this area. We are seeing great numbers of Sculpin hanging out over rocky bottoms. Keep in mind they do swim fairly close to the surface so topwater lures or lightweight baits should do well for them. There are some decent catches of Bass, Barred Sand as well as Bass, Calico swimming the nearshore as well. They can be found a bit deeper in the grass. Sinking swimbaits or live anchovy generally produce great results. For larger Calicos anglers like to throw a bit bigger baits such as perch, croaker or squid. The Sand Bass are generally a fall fish but with the warm temperatures are still hanging around the sandy areas. They as prefer anchovies as well so many anglers will chum this until they school up beneath your boat if it’s anchored. There are also reports of Surfperch, Barred and a ton of Sanddab, Pacific as well. The twilight bite has been the most productive this week.

Santa Monica/Ocean Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – With the Rockfish closure as of January 1, most of the focus has been on the inshore so far this week. There has been some unfavorable weather in the area as of recently however there were some angle able to get out on the water yesterday and did bring back some reports. Lots of Sculpin are turning up throughout the inshore and anglers are having no trouble catching double digits. The Bass, Barred Sand and Bass, Calico bite has slowed down so far as we are only seeing a handful turn up. Anglers who are targeting them are generally finding them in darker places hiding in kelp or on structure. Live bait is typically the best bet as the scent will help attract them to the bait. Most anglers will use live Anchovy as a go to. There are no reports of Surfperch, Barred yet.

Santa Monica/Ocean Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – The action inshore has slowed down quite a bit this week. We are seeing very few Sheepshead, California turn up no matter what anglers are throwing. Even crabs aren’t luring them in. There have been no sign of Bass, Spotted Sand at this point however we won’t be surprised to see a few turn up by the weekend. They are loving the live bait inshore so if you put your time in with some live Shrimp you will have a far better chance of reeling in a keeper.

OFFSHORE – Anglers are continuing to catch limits of Rockfish (Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Bocaccio & Rockfish, Vermillion) so far this week. There has also been a slow Yellowtail bite above in the same area. The Lingcod bite has slowed down drastically at this point and we are seeing very few turn up so far.

Santa Monica/Ocean Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – There is quite a bit of action from the inshore this week. The Sheepshead bite has improved this week now that the weather has settled down. Their numbers and sizes are good. We are also seeing Bass, Spotted Sand turning up as well along the coast. They are loving anything live, preferably a Shrimp. Some Whitefish are being reported as well however their bite has been fairly slow as of yet. These conditions are expected to continue over the holiday so there will be plenty of action for anglers.

OFFSHORE – Things are heating up in the area this week. There are tons of Rockfish (Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Bocaccio & Rockfish, Vermillion) along with a few Lingcod as well. The Ling bite is slow so far. There should be no trouble catching this week as the numbers are high so far, mostly in the triple digits. The sizes are decent as well. Rockfish, Bocaccio are turning up as well in the deep water. Their numbers are great so far this week and should continue over the holiday.

OFFSHORE – Wind has shut just about everything down. It has been too strong for any anglers to get out this week. It is just slightly beginning to clear up however the swells and conditions will likely not have the water ready for the weekend even if the weather is nice. The beaches and piers are pretty torn up so far this week. We expect the Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Lingcod) to still be around after the conditions become more favorable however it’s not easy to tell when that will be. Anglers who head out over the weekend can always consult our Tips feature which provides additional information and suggestions to help improve the catch.

INSHORE – The beach as been out this week due to the swell. The Channel Islands and Catalina Islands are producing Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Lingcod). The main target this week is Bass, Calico. They are on fire and have a great bite along the coast. There are some Bonito, Pacific mixed in there too. Once the weather calms down the beaches will provide good structure for Surfperch, Barred in another month.

OFFSHORE – The local kelp beds on the edge of the swell are the only place boaters can really head this week and not get too banged up. There are reports of Skipjack swimming South and they are very sporadically beginning to show up. There is also a solid Yellowtail bite expected very soon once the weather clears up. Anglers have to sit tight this week.

Santa Monica/Ocean Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – Bass, Calico are the target of most fishermen this week. They have been doing well on a small, live bait as well as swimbaits. There have also been reports of Bonito, Pacific and even a few Barracuda, California swimming around.Once the water cools a little bit more anglers expect to see both Surfperch, Barred and Halibut, Pacific swimming the beaches.

OFFSHORE – The fishing has become a bit spotty in this area as the summer fish are beginning to disappear and the winters have not yet shown up. Anglers in the deep water can still find good amounts of Tuna, Yellowfin on the South end as they are on their way out. Yellowtail are also biting in the deep water this week and should not be difficult to catch on a small, live bait.

BAIT REPORT – Anchovy and Sardines are running from the Pier all the way to Ocean Park. The birds are going nuts and giving away their spots so they shouldn’t be hard to find this week. INSHORE – The beach has been slow this time of year. The moon has brought high tides and wind which has not made fishing easy this week. So far there are no signs of Surfperch, barred at this point however there have been some Corbina, California hooked. It is late in the season to be finding them and they are becoming spotty.

OFFSHORE – The better weather has brought an improved bite for this area. The kelp beds are holding quite a few fish this week. There are still a few Bonito, Pacific swimming however they are becoming spotty week after week. Yellowtail have been settling in the deep water as well. For anglers looking for a good Tuna, Yellowfin bite they will have to head to the South end to find that. This is fairly typical for the end of the season although normally these conditions would have occurred a lot sooner.

Santa Monica/Ocean Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – Unfavorable weather has made offshore fishing quite difficult. Anglers have not made it out at this point so there are no reports at this time. If fishermen decide to head out when the conditions calm down they can always check out our Tips feature which provides additional information and suggestions to help improve their catch. In addition, anglers can head into Santa Monica Pier Bait & Tackle for an up to the minute report.

OFFSHORE – The bite in this area has slowed down significantly. Rockfish, Yellowtail bite is dying down and nearly gone. Most anglers are heading out for Rockfish, Vermillion using a dropper loop with a live Anchovy or Sardine on the end. Santa Monica/Ocean Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – The closer fishing has slowed down quite a bit. Yellowtail have slowed down significantly. A Dropper loop with something live on the end such as Sardines, Anchovies or Mackerel are working best. There are still some Bonito, Pacific swimming and if you hit the right schools you can use a swim bait, iron or live bait to find them. this is expected to continue after the front passes and the waters settle.

OFFSHORE – Tough weather conditions have made offshore fishing quite difficult. Before the front the Yellowtail bite was beginning to slow down as anglers were hooking more schoolies sizes. There were a good number of Dorado (Dolphin) as well before the front so once the conditions settle this is expected to continue. The water temperature is still fairly warm at this point so there should be a few Tuna, Yellowfin swimming as well.

BAIT REPORT – There are no bait running to report at this time. Weather has made live bait fishing difficult and results are expected to pick up next week.

Santa Monica Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Prior to last year, there have been no reports of Wahoo being caught in this area. Since the first catch reports anglers have still been vying for that rare bite offshore. For additional information on them feel free to check out our Tips feature that provides recommendations on how to improve your catch.

INSHORE – The Yellowtail bite along Long Beach and all through the coast anywhere from 5 lbs all the way through 25 lbs mixed in. A Dropper loop with something live on the end such as Sardines, Anchovies or Mackerel are working best. Anglers are also using a Yoyo Iron. Exotics are the most popular choice right now as no one seems to be fishing for Bass (Calico Bass). There are plenty of Bonito (Bonito, Pacific) running and if you hit the right schools you can use a swim bait, iron or live bait to find them. Looking for signs of life is the best bet to find fish inshore. Birds or kelp patties will hiding a mixed bag below anywhere from 1 to 100 miles out.

BAIT REPORT – There are lots of bait running providing ample options for anglers. Anchovies, Sardines and Mackerel are all hot and should provide no trouble for anyone searching for live bait.

Santa Monica Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – 4 miles out from Long Beach in 150 feet of water is where you can find a crazy Yellowtail Tuna bite right now. There has also been a great Bluefin Tuna bite with multiple fish in the 200lb range. Water temperature has been between 69 and 73 degrees. Morning are proving to be a great time to fish and there’s a lot of limits being filled. Live Sardines are working very well. If you need a break from all the Tuna, you can look to the offshore kelp patties for Dorado.

INSHORE – There’s a ew mackerel and bonita kicking around. Sometimes you can hook into Leopard Sharks. The inshore bait of choice for catching fish right now is squid. You find too many people fishing inshore right now as the offshore fishing is on fire.. Calico bass is good right now, the twilight boats at night have been doing very well on Sand Bass and Sculpin.

Feel free to swing on by.
