Providence Fishing Report

INSHORE – During the Winter season the migratory fish have left the area and the variety of fish available in State waters are slim. Some anglers are still heading out on the few party boats still running. Cod, Atlantic is the main species to keep while winter fishing but they are found mostly in Rhode Island saltwater. Inshore anglers can fish for holdover Striper (Bass, Striped) in many of the tidal rivers. We are looking forward to hearing about the Spring run. As we find varying weather conditions from day to day we encourage all anglers to stay safe and warm when fishing. This is a great opportunity to check out some of the current Pro Angler App features along with new additions coming soon. We look forward to bringing you more great Pro Reports when the bite fires back up.

Providence Fishing Report

INSHORE – During the Winter season the migratory fish have left the area and the variety of fish available in State waters are slim. Anglers who are determined to head out can fish Providence River up by the Power Plant. This area is typically holding resident Stripers (Bass, Striped) that can be fished all Winter long. Some anglers are heading north to fish freshwater or ice fish when the water is solid. White Perch (Perch, Silver) can also be found in the shallow water. Towards Block Island you may find some Stripers. Tautog are only available for catch and release fishing at this time. Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] are in deeper water. There’s not much to do offshore through the winter aside from the Cod (Cod, Atlantic) bite that happens when the bigger charter boats can get towards Block Island. As we find varying weather conditions from day to day we encourage all anglers to stay safe and warm when fishing. This is a great opportunity to check out some of the current Pro Angler App features along with new additions coming soon! December 27, 2016

Providence Fishing Report

INSHORE – When weather allows anglers to get out we expect to see some Cod (Cod, Atlantic) caught around 99-140 ft. The West as well as South of Block Island and the East side of Block Island will do well. Party Boats Seven B and the Frances Fleet will fish for them. Clams will work well to catch them along with Jigs and Berkley Gulp 6 inch swimming mullet as a teaser on an octopus hook. Gulp and White are always good colors to choose. Recently the morning bite has been most productive. We hope to see this continue into next week.

BAIT REPORT – Squid have slowed down, likely due to the wind. If we see some more ideal conditions they may continue to turn up.

Providence Fishing Report

INSHORE – Schoolie Bass (Bass, Striped) are swimming the Providence and Seekonk Rivers. Anglers are catching some keepers. In the Connecticut Rivers, there are keeper Bass and plenty of schoolies. Housatonic and the Thames are great places to fish. There are still some Cod (Cod, Atlantic) and Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) around. Anglers are heading out in the mornings to fish for them. Clams will work well to catch them along with Jigs and Berkley Gulp 6 inch swimming mullet as a teaser on an octopus hook. Sea Bass are taking Gulp as well. You can hook them any way for a good bite. Glow and White are most productive colors. MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM THE PRO ANGLER TEAM! PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal more tips and tricks on how to catch!

Providence Fishing Report

INSHORE – We still have some inshore schoolie Bass (Bass, Striped). For bigger fish, head to the CT shoreline. Fish the mouths of the rivers and up the Thames and Housatonic rivers for some decent Bass. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal more tips and tricks on how to catch!

OFFSHORE – Tautog are out deep in 100 ft. There are some inshore but they are mostly small. We are seeing great numbers Cod (Cod, Atlantic) along with a decent Black Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) bite. The Cod are up to 15 lbs. The Black Sea Bass are up to 4 lbs. Pollock and Weakfish are mixed in. Anglers are jigging around what they call the East Grounds. This is in Block Island Sound, about 7 miles West. Fish tight to the bottom for Sea Bass. Diamond Jigs with a Berkley Gulp Teaser is working well. The Berkley Mullet is destroying the fish regardless of what shape it’s in. The day bite is most productive. There are plenty more Sea Bass around the island. Find the structure to find the fish. Working some tapered metal swedish style jigs through the whole water column has been productive as well.

BAIT REPORT – Squidding has been great, especially out of Newport and Jamestown.

Providence Fishing Report

INSHORE – Out front there is quite a bit of Bass (Bass, Striped). There plenty of schoolies however things are slowing down in the river as the temperature drops. There are keepers here and there. East Beach and Watch Hill are still holding fish. The Cod (Cod, Atlantic) Fishing around Block Island has been great. Everyone is hooking up to fish. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) and Tautog are biting as well. Winter Flounder (Flounder, Winter) have been caught around Green Point. They can be caught on Sea Worms. You can also cast for them from shore around the airport. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal more tips and tricks on how to catch!

Providence Fishing Report

INSHORE – Tautog are closer to the mouth of the bay. Anglers fishing deeper water are doing well also. Stripers (Bass, Striped) are hit or miss off the beaches from here all the way to Charlestown and even south of Westerly. The Breach ways are hit or miss. Bluefish are scattered around Providence. Boat anglers are having to keep an eye on the wind forecasts. As there’s still a good scattering of fish, all you need to catch fish is a break in the weather. Ocean State Tackle is the largest Squid Jig Supplier in the nation with over 144 different types of jigs. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal more tips and tricks on how to catch!

OFFSHORE – Cod (Cod, Atlantic), and Tautog can be found offshore. Both are very weather dependent. 65-90 ft are best for Tautog. Black Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are still around. Cod have been caught off of Block Island. The bite hasn’t been consistent due to weather.

BAIT REPORT – Squid can be caught around Newport. The bite varies depending on the wind. Yo Zuri Squid Jigs are doing well to hook them. The Rhode Island Bridge / Calamari Causeway is doing well. Peconic Point and Jamestown around Fort Wetherill and Fort Getty are productive as well.

November 21, 2016

Providence Fishing Report

INSHORE – As the cooler weather sets in the Tautog are still biting however anglers are encouraged to head towards the deeper water going forward. The beginning of the Cod (Cod, Atlantic) season has been set in motion. They are still hit or miss at this point but they are there for anglers who put their time in. Surprisingly there are still good numbers of Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) being caught into this week. You can find them in the same areas that you catch Cod. You may even catch them incidentally while Cod fishing. Stripers (Bass, Striped) and Bluefish have been targeted around the Providence area and throughout the rivers. The beaches to the south are also doing well for them. Be sure to keep an eye out for birds and bait. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal more tips and tricks on how to catch!

BAIT REPORT – Small bait, likely Menhaden, are running the beach. There are still some Squid being caught in Newport. They are also moving through the harbors at Block Island.

November 16, 2016

Providence Fishing Report

INSHORE – The bite is mostly Tautog into this week. Anglers are searching the lights and from shore around the tavern and parks to find them. It’s beginning to slow down however anglers putting time in are doing well. They are up to 10 shorts to a keeper. Some anglers are getting their limits. You can either fish high tide or low tide. Early morning around sunrise is best along with late afternoon. Anglers are drifting Eels in the Warren river at night during the changing tide for some Bass (Bass, Striped). The numbers and sizes are decent. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal more tips and tricks on how to catch!

OFFSHORE – Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are still being caught in 40-50 ft of water. They are taking Clams or Squid strips.

BAIT REPORT – Pogies (Menhaden) are thinning out around Providence.

November 8, 2016

Providence Fishing Report

INSHORE – The bite is mostly Blackfish (Tautog) into this week. They are taking jigs and, of course, Crabs. There was even a 29 inch Tpg that was weighed in. Fish the early morning right at sunrise. It really depends on the area however. Generally two hours before high tide or two hours after is productive. It’s not an issue for anglers on boats who know where the holes, rocks, docks, pilings and bridges are. We are seeing the occasional Striper (Bass, Striped), but they are mostly schoolies. Crabs and Shrimp are the best bait to hook them as we’ve been finding that in their bellies. Bluefish are up to 20 lbs in the river. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal more tips and tricks on how to catch!

BAIT REPORT – Anglers are seeing a lot of bait (Menhaden) in the rivers right up to the dams. There aren’t a lot of fish chasing them. The fish seem to be elsewhere so you can grab some Menhaden and take them to the fish.

Providence Fishing Report

INSHORE – Stripers (Bass, Striped) are doing well in the river. There is an abundance of schoolies with the occasional fish to 30 inches. They are great for catch and release fishing. Bigger fish are around Newport and out front where the cooler, deeper water is. Fort Adams and the beaches are great places to search. Tautog is the main focus for a lot of anglers as they just opened. Rock piles and docks are the best places to search. Two hours before and after outgoing tide (or incoming tide in some areas) during the morning hours is the best time to fish. There are a few places around with Mussel beds so a low tide is better in these areas. Boaters are doing well around Prudence and Hog Island in particular. Providence Fishing Report

INSHORE – Bass (Bass, Striped) and Bluefish are in the Providence and Seekonk rivers. The South Shores are producing nice Bass on Eels, lures and Menhaden. Shallow Divers in Yellow, SP Minnows and Bombers are key. Bluefish are taking Mackerel and Pogies. Tautog is as far inshore as Providence and India Point Park. The bays and coves are holding fish this week with lots of 6lb fish being caught. Charter Captains are doing great with Tautog within a few miles of the Coast around Little Compton, Newport and Brennan Reef. Albies (Bonito, Little Tunny) are on the coast. They are hit or miss from day to day from Elizabeth Islands to Buzzard’s Bay and West. They are hitting SP Minnows and Epoxy jigs. Jamestown and Newport has had a bit of wind. Block Island reportedly been slow. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal more tips and tricks on how to catch!

OFFSHORE – At the Canyons we are seeing sporadic Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin & Tuna, Bluefin).

INSHORE – There is excellent Bluefish angling right now. They are up to 10 lbs right off the beach. Stripers (Bass, Striped) are running like crazy. The Cove along with East Greenwich has been holding keeper Stripers as they chase Pogies. They are from Westerly and Charlestown Beaches up to the cape and the rivers. They haven’t even schooled up to make the fall run yet. Search under the Bluefish to find them. Black Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) and Tautog are moving into the upper bay. INSHORE – Striped Bass (Bass, Striped), Scup and Tautog are biting along with False Albacore (Bonito, Little Tunny). Tautog are biting off Jamestown and Beavertail Point. You can also search the reefs off of Newport. Albies are swimming Point Judith to Roosevelt area and Pier 5. Some fish are inshore along the Newport and Little Compton coast. Bass are in the lower Providence River, the bay and out at the Island. Ocean State Tackle has all the lures you will need to keep the fish on your hook! PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal more tips and tricks on how to catch!

OFFSHORE – We have been trailering to Massachusetts as the Bluefin (Tuna, Bluefin) bite is best in Cape Cod bay and Stellwagen. They are in great sizes. David Henault was fishing with Captain Jack Ferengel and they caught a monster last week! They were jigging with RonZ lures on spinning tackle. Cod (Cod, Atlantic) fishing is picking up here, however, for both private and for party boats. We had some guys head out on a charter the other other day and the Cod fishing was great along with some awesome Sea Bassin’ (Sea Bass, Black) too.

INSHORE – The keeper Stripers (Bass, Striped) are being caught at Block Island. Eels are working at night while fresh Pogies are better during the day. SP Minnows are working well if you aren’t using bait. They are biting Pogies during the day as there are plenty in the bay. There’s every size from schoolie to hog in the river. The cooler water is bringing them back in. Bonito (Bonito, Atlantic) and Albacore (Bonito, Little Tunny) are biting off of Newport and Sakonnet Point. Deadly Dicks are working well. The Scup fishing is still good. The Tautog bite has heated up with the cooler water. Asian Crabs work well with Tidal Tails. We are also seeing Bluefish. Squeteague (Weakfish) are being caught more and more while fishing for Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black). Sea Bass and Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] are doing well in the deeper areas of the channels. Squid is doing well for Sea Bass and Scup. It has been a great start to fall as the bite heats up. Ocean State Tackle has all the lures you will need to keep the fish on your hook! INSHORE – Bass (Bass, Striped) and Bluefish have returned to the lower Providence river. They were feeding on Spearing and Anchovy before the brown water moved in. They are taking soft plastics, bait chunks and topwater lures. Scup are also swimming. Clam, Worms and Squid have been working well for the Scup in particular. Saber Point has been a great area along with Salter Grove. The Tautog bite has been alright despite the wind. Ocean State Tackle has all the lures you will need to keep the fish on your hook! PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal more tips and tricks on how to catch!

OFFSHORE – The offshore bite has been good for charters catching Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin). The Bonito (Bonito, Pacific) and Albies (Bonito, Little Tunny) have been quite active off of Westerly. They are heavy down in Point Judith too. There has been a lot of brown water that mixed fish up a bit recently but it is beginning to clear up.

BAIT REPORT – Spearing and bay Anchovies were swimming before the brown water moved in. Squid have been caught around Newport.
