Plymouth Fishing Report

INSHORE – Saltwater angling has all but wrapped up in Massachusetts. There will still be some small holdover Bass (Bass, Striped) in canals and rivers. Some areas on the west of Cape Cod Bay will see decent amount of Herring throughout the winter. Early winter still provides some Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) opportunities for recreational angling. The state has some really good freshwater fishing in the ponds and lakes. Stay tuned for new in-app Freshwater hot spots to get you through the offseason till everything fires back up in the spring. Have a great winter and stay safe.

Plymouth Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – There aren’t a lot of anglers heading out locally this week. There may be holdover Striped Bass (Bass, Striped) to the North and South. We have not had any reports of Smelt at this time. To the North local Trout ponds are stocked as anglers begin to focus on more Freshwater. In the Saltwater, there are some Cod (Cod, Atlantic) being caught on the beach. Clam on the bottom with a simple bottom rig will do well to hook them. Mackerel (Mackerel, Atlantic) and Smelt are around. Smelt are on a bit of a downslide. They can be found in the harbor. Stripers (Bass, Striped) and Bluefish are pretty much gone.

BAIT REPORT – We haven’t had any reports from offshore locally however there are still a few recreational Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) out at the bank but most anglers are staying inside. A lot of anglers have started fishing Freshwater until the Spring.

INSHORE – To the North Smelt are swimming with a few big Mackerel (Mackerel, Atlantic) this week. Fish the Island or Summer Street in Boston. You can jig them up with Sabiki rigs. Anglers are heading out during the incoming tide that brings the bait in. On the lower end we are seeing a bit more action Big migratory Stripers (Bass, Striped) have left. There’s some holdover fish around the rivers and inshore, they’re just small. You’ll have to travel out of state if you want to get into any big fish. There hasn’t been much on Cod (Cod, Atlantic) this week. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – There are still some recreational Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) being caught around Chatham and Stellwagen this week. They are within 7 miles out. Bait is pushing through so you can find Bluefin chasing the Mackerel. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

Plymouth Fishing Report

INSHORE – There are still some schoolie Striped Bass (Bass, Striped) being caught this week. Anglers are searching the ditches to find them moving through. They are up to almost 30 lbs but you will have to put some time in and sort through the smaller sizes to find them. Sand Eels have been a great bait to hook them. Similar artificials by Savage have been productive. Mackerel have been caught in the East end during the moving tide. You can also find Stripers in this area following them. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) are pretty quiet into this week. The wind has made getting out a little tough for sport boats. When you can get out, head to Stellwagen for early in the morning and troll spreader bars. Belsan Bait and Tackle 781-545-9400 www.belsanbait.com https://proangler.us/capt/BelsanBTMA.jpg

Plymouth Fishing Report

INSHORE – We haven’t heard much locally here. To the north, closer to Boston, the beaches and rivers are still producing some schoolie Stripers (Bass, Striped). There’s been a lot of Mackerel up there so that, or an imitation like a white plug, has been good to throw at them. Reports of big fish to the south have been few and far between. The beaches are still producing some schoolies.

OFFSHORE – There are sporadic showings of Bluefin (Tuna, Bluefin) in the middle of the bay. Most anglers are casting to smaller fish them as commercial fishing is closed. The Strategic Anglers are a good lure to use. Most people still using live bait are getting into too big of fish. There have been hit or miss reports from Stellwagen and the east side has some fish from P-town and east of Chatham. We’ve been hearing about lots of anglers having to pass up casting at giants and selectively targeting the smaller fish that are mixed in.

BAIT REPORT – Mackerel are up north along with Smelt and there’s also some smaller baits out in Cape Cod Bay.

INSHORE – Smelt fishing is pretty happening this week. We are still seeing the last traces of Schoolies (Bass, Striped) moving South by the beaches and North river. There are 5-6 lb Cod (Cod, Atlantic) right in front as well. They are taking jigs or clam with a teaser. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

Plymouth Fishing Report

INSHORE – Anglers are heading to the canals this week for the bigger Stripers (Bass, Striped) at dawn and dusk. Most fish have moved out at this point and the weather is changing quickly. If you can find a decent day you may find some Tog (Tautog). Search rocky structures and jetties to find them. They are hit or miss, some days they are hot and some days they are scarce. The middle of Cape Cod bay is providing a great Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) bite. Mackerel has been the key bait if you can find them. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – The weather has been a bit too unfavorable for anglers to head out this week. If you are determined to get out and catch some fish there are Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) biting around the middle of Cape Cod bay. If you can find Mackerel, that’s going to be the best bait for them. Plymouth Fishing Report

INSHORE – There are still plenty of Stripers (Bass, Striped) and Bluefish between the Green Harbor Jetties and the Plymouth Power Plant. They are between 30-45 inches. They are taking live Mackerel, dead Mackerel, live or dead Pogies and live Herring. High tide is the best time to fish however they will be biting any time of day for the most part. Anglers are doing well on Cod (Cod, Atlantic) right outside Farnham rock in front of Green Harbor. They are up to 30 inches. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – When the weather cooperates the commercial fleet continues to get Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) between 80-100 inches on live Mackerel. In addition to that there is still a really good stock of school Bluefin Tuna between the Southeast and Southwest corner of Stellwagen down to Province. Siren Lures are best to hook them.

INSHORE – Green Harbor, South towards the Canal and Sandwich have been great for Bass (Bass, Striped) fishing along with the canal itself. Plugs, Gibbs Lures, Lights Out Lures and custom wooden surface topwater lures in light colors are working well to hook them. You can also snag Bunker and light line them. First light and last light are the best times to fish. In the sound there are still a lot of fish off the bay. Striped Bass can be caught right off the beaches. Gibbs Lures are good here too. Walk the beach and look for signs. Cast right into them when you see bait pushing. Off of Chatham there are a few Bass hanging out but they aren’t as thick as they have been. The Big Buck Contest starts on the 17th. The buy in is $10 and winner takes all! See store for details! PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

INSHORE – We are continuing to have a very unusual Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] bite inside of Green Harbor and just outside the Green Harbor Jetties (Green Harbor Beach) so far. We are also consistently catching Bass (Bass, Striped) from 30-40 inches from kayaks or small boats using Daddy Mac Lures or DM Minnows. Live Mackerel has been key as well. The bite in Plymouth and Duxbury Bay has been unreal. The Flounder fishing is world class. There are 10 keepers to 1 throwback. They are from 15-20 inches. There are more Flounder than Fluke. They are taking frozen Clams. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

INSHORE – The Flounder (Flounder, Winter) and Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] bite has been great between Duxbury and Marshfield. White Bucktails are effective for experienced anglers while newer anglers can throw Spin and Go Fluke Rigs with strips of Squid or Clam. Within the last few days there were some huge Bass (Bass, Striped) caught inside the harbor as well.

OFFSHORE – There is a fantastic Canyon bite this week. A majority of the fish have been caught from Veatch Canyon but more recently there has been a good bite to West Atlantis Canyon. The species have been Bigeyes (Tuna, Bigeye) to 200 lbs on select Ballyhoo behind a Joe Shute Head. There are some giant Bluefin (Tuna, Bluefin) caught up to 80 inches as well. They were surprisingly filled with Krill! More fish are off Main and Gloucester. Some boats are hitting 3 at a time. They are most likely drifting or on anchor. There are some coming off Green Harbor as well. Just east of Stellwagen Bank. They seem to be biting just about everywhere. We are seeing Yellowfins (Tuna, Yellowfin) up to 50 lbs so they are still schoolie sized. Plenty of Mahi (Dolphin) are showing up just in time for the full moon. There should be a decent harvest of Swordfish (Billfish – Swordfish). The day bite has been so good that anglers haven’t been going out at night.

For the most part, swimming plugs and live eels are a great bet to hook them if you can get your hands on some. For larger sizes, some anglers will live line Herring, Menhaden and Mackerel, whatever they have to hook them. They are biting out in the bay for the commercial anglers as well.

INSHORE – Stripers (Bass, Striped), Mackerel (Mackerel, Atlantic) and Flounder (Flounder, Winter) are consistent by the jetties and up to the North river. We hope to see things heat up for the weekend.

OFFSHORE – There has been a hot and cold Bluefin (Tuna, Bluefin) bite between the middle bank and the Southeast Corner. There were some fish trolled up on Crab Ledge but overall it has been slow. The Haddock continue in the same areas.

Plymouth Fishing Report

INSHORE – From the beaches around Beetle Rock and Third, Fourth and First Cliff are all producing Striped Bass (Bass, Striped) from mid 30s to high 40s up to 36 lbs. They are loving live Mackerel.

OFFSHORE – The Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) have been biting the middle section of Stellwagen Bank. Plenty of fish have been caught on kites with live Mackerel (Mackerel, Atlantic). A handful were caught on custom swimming Ballyhoo with a pink and white head. To the East towards the Cod Grounds has been holding some great sizes as well. They are up to 95 inches. The full moon was surprisingly productive. It was great. The nearshore Striper (Bass, Striped) fishing continues to be hot and cold. The warmer weather is having better fishing than the cold days. The point and bar right off Provincetown have been great areas to look. The most productive method is vertical jigging on Daddy Mac Lures. Slick Fish Umbrella Rigs have also been great as they look just like the thick running Sand Eels.

BAIT REPORT – Sand Eels are everywhere this week. Mackerel are feeding on them and there are some Herring (Threadfin) swimming underneath. Check out Green Harbor Bait & Tackle in this weekend’s Hyannis Tuna Fest sponsored by Castafari Charters! Stop by for weigh in and cheer them on. Good luck anglers!

INSHORE – It has been pretty solid for Stripers (Bass, Striped) this week. The Canal in the East end during the evening has been hot. The night bite by the bridges has been a hot area as well. The West end of the Canal is holding a good amount of Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] and Scup. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) have been around heavy as well this week. We hope to see this bite continue into the weekend. Squid and Sea Worms are swimming are the hot inshore baits for Sea Bass and Fluke.

INSHORE – The Striped Bass (Bass, Striped) has been good across the pond off the point. Live Mackerel on a vertical jig with Daddy Mack Jigs has been successful. Slick Fish umbrella rigs have also been productive. Anglers are trolling the shoals with them. Around Sandy Neck in about 6 feet has also been a hotspot. Off the beaches between the rock and ledge we are seeing Stripers up to mid 30 inches on chunked Mackerel and Clams while trolling Daddy Mack plugs. Flounder (Flounder, Winter) has been good out front and in the marina with Clams and Sea Worms.

OFFSHORE – The Bluefin (Tuna, Bluefin) fishing has been good despite the wind. We hope to see the catches pick up once the weather clears out.

BAIT REPORT – Anglers can jig for Mackerel in the bay. There are tons of Sand Eels around as well.

INSHORE – The edge of the state water mark has been the best to find the largest Stripers (Bass, Striped) in our area. Fish pushing 30 pounds have been taken in the deeper water on live Mackerel. The number two place is the North River, look for keepers there for a couple more weeks. Look for the inshore areas along the beaches to improve as the new shell lobsters move in. Flounder (Flounder, Winter) remains steady on the beaches and in the harbors, a few blackbacks pushing 4 pounds have been caught in and around Scituate harbor. The tinker Mackerel (Mackerel, Atlantic) have moved in along with the harbor Pollock, look for the bass fishing to be the best of the season a couple days after first big push through Cape Cod canal. You can grab one cod in state waters over 19 inches, this has been decent east of Minots.

OFFSHORE – Haddock remains healthy all over Stellwagen Bank , small teasers tipped with clam or mackerel is all you need. 90 inch BFT (Tuna, Bluefin) have been trolled at Crab Ledge Chatham, Mass Bay awaits any size tuna that wants to visit there.

INSHORE – Stripers (Bass, Striped) are being successfully caught with Spades, Chunk Mackerel and Clams. Fishing has also been productive in the Green Harbour Jetties inside and outside of the north and south river, pottaport bridge, and near Duxbury Bridge. The largest stripers caught so far are 26 inches in length.

OFFSHORE – Haddock are being caught around the high ground on the middle of Stellwagen bank all of the way down to the south-east and south-west also in unusually shallow water of 70-100ft. Cod (Cod, Atlantic) up to 20 lbs are also being caught in the same region. Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) was also being caught south of the islands around the area of the 30 fathom hole with multiple schools of 60 to 90 inch Bluefin Tuna blitzing.

INSHORE – Everyone is catching fish in the canals this week. Stripers (Bass, Stripers) are up to 30 lbs. It has not been difficult to stock up on some great fish. They are running thick and everyone is getting out to catch them. Anglers are using soft plastics in green and blue to catch them. We expect to see this continue into the weekend.

INSHORE – The word from the Goose Hummock Shop was of some crazy Striper (Bass, Striped) fishing with huge numbers of small bass being caught and released. The hot lure according to Captain Austin is the Spro bucktail with R2 heads and 4-inch herring-colored tails. These have accounted for several small keepers in the 29-inch class which are being returned. Squid have moved up into this area providing an opportunity to collect some bait or great eating.

Plymouth Fishing Report

INSHORE – Reports are coming in that there are still mackerel being caught in the East End of the Canal. He also heard of a big school of Mackerel, Atlantic off Chatham. The angler who tipped Stan off had been fishing for giant Tuna, Yellowfin. While no bluefin found his baits, they angler did catch an estimated 400-pound Shark. Stan said the angler didn’t mention which species of shark. Given the time of year, seems likely, although a 400-pound Porbeagle would be a very big one.The Helen H had a wreck-fishing trip on Saturday. Stan said it was a productive trip, although many anglers caught, and then had to release, large Sea Bass, Black because they are out of season. The Focus is mostly on freshwater at this point of the year. Anglers who put their time in can still find a decent saltwater bite.

BAIT REPORT – Sand Eels are running the bottom of the offshore and the Mackerel are already chasing them.

INSHORE – Bluefish and Bass (Bass, Striped) have moved out at this point along with the Sharks. The season is pretty well over as there is not much to fish for in the inshore. Some anglers are switching to Freshwater and some are heading to the offshore where there is still a decent bite so far this week. For anglers heading out this weekend they can always check out our Tips feature which provides additional information and suggestions to help improve the catch.

OFFSHORE – There are still some Tuna, Bluefin to be caught in the offshore. They are up on Stellwagen Bank and out to the East past Chatham. They continue to bite well as the water is still arm. The Tuna are coming up in good sizes although the numbers have dropped. They are chasing Mackerel which are swimming the offshore. This is later than normal as they are spread out towards Chatham up to Rice point as well. They have been chasing the Mackerel that are chasing the Sand Eel run.

BAIT REPORT – Sand Eels are running the bottom of the offshore and the Mackerel are already chasing them.

INSHORE – There have been no reports so far from the inshore this week. Most anglers are heading either offshore or to the freshwater kettle ponds for Smallmouth Bass, Largemouth Bass, Rainbow and Brown Trout. They are hot this week and the target for most anglers.

OFFSHORE – There are still Tuna, Bluefin swimming in the offshore this week. Anglers are making their way out to catch some monsters anywhere from 500 to almost 700 lbs! Boaters have continued to live line Mackerel to hook the big ones. They are becoming increasingly more difficult to find but they are still out there around the Stellwagen area. Bigger sizes will keep showing up as the weather becomes cooler.

BAIT REPORT – Tons of birds hovering above the bait this week.

INSHORE – Most of the inshore is pretty much shut down for the year. There are still some Mackerel, Atlantic swimming however this is the only fish reported this week. For anglers that decide to try their luck from the inshore they can always take a look at our Tips feature which provides additional information and suggestions to help improve the catch.

OFFSHORE – The overall number of Tuna being caught this week is down but the Giant Bluefin (Tuna, Bluefin) sizes have been making up for a lack of numbers. It’s absolutely quality over quantity right now. Reports have come in of up to 660 lbs! Anglers have been live lining Mackerel around the bottom of the Stellwagen area for the biggest sizes. The bite is expected to continue over the next few weeks as the water will remain cold and the bigger sizes will move down.

BAIT REPORT – There are still plenty of Mackerel swimming for anglers to use as offshore bait this week. Keep your eyes out for the The Goose Hummock’s huge Black Friday Sales and Mark your calendars February 5 & 6 for The Goose Hummock’s Blue Water Bash! See website for details.

Plymouth Fishing Report

INSHORE – There are still a few spots to find Bass, Striped this week before they disappear. Outside the estuaries and into the creeks are holding a few good sizes however most of the bigger Bass are holding up in the canal and are running fairly steady. The Blues (Bluefish) are gone at this point. There are still some croakers swimming as well however are becoming very sporadic. Blackfish (Tautog) is doing well on structures in the nearshore. There have also been some Flounder, Winter but not very many. They have been hiding along the bottom so anglers have to work to get some decent sizes.

OFFSHORE – Tuna, Bluefin are still swimming about 12 miles out off Chatham. They continue to come in fairly thick and in good sizes. Big Mackerel have been reported from the offshore as well and are chasing the thick Sand Eel run that is making its way by. There is no shortage of fish in the offshore this week and when weather condition have been favorable the fishing has been great.

BAIT REPORT – Sand Eels continue to run thick in the offshore this week and are working well as bait. Keep your eyes out for the The Goose Hummock’s huge Black Friday Sales and Mark your calendars February 5 & 6 for The Goose Hummock’s Blue Water Bash! See website for details.

Plymouth Fishing Report

INSHORE – Things have been slowing down inshore this week. There are still a few reports of Stripers (Bass, Striped) swimming the canals, but for the most part they have moved on. Some anglers are hooking them in Rhode Island and South a bit more however they are spotty here.

OFFSHORE – The Tuna, Bluefin bite has been solid lately in the deep water. They aren’t too far out at 10-14 miles off the shore. They’ve even been taking Sand Eels. They are not coming up in big numbers but are still in good sizes. Mackerel are swimming as well and anglers continue to live line them for Tuna as well. Cod fishing is now closed so boaters can no longer keep them.

BAIT REPORT – Schools of Sand Eels have been passing through this area along with some Mackerel in the offshore. Mark your calendars February 5 & 6 for The Goose Hummock’s Blue Water Bash! See website for details.

Plymouth

INSHORE – The Bass, Striped have begun their migration South however there are still some to be found inshore. The canals have been turning up some decent sizes and they are still chasing Menhaden. Bluefish are also chasing Menhaden although they are beginning to slow down as well.

OFFSHORE – Straight out to the East, anglers are seeing a good number of Bluefin (Tuna, Bluefin). They are out anywhere from 10-14 miles out, some even closer. Anglers are drifting with live Mackerel, and trolling Squid bars or pulling shorts. The bigger sizes are in the deeper water. For boaters determined to catch a Yellowfin (Tuna, Yellowfin) there are still some in the gulf stream and the canyons, but it is a pretty far journey out.

BAIT REPORT – In the offshore waters there are plenty of Mackerel to be caught in the 100-200 ft range. Follow the birds to find the bait. Sabiki rigs or diamond jigs are working well. Mark your calendars February 5 & 6 for The Goose Hummock’s Blue Water Bash! See website for details.

Plymouth Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Striper (Bass, Striped) migration is still on as the fish move South although they continue to chase the peanut sized Menhaden. Stripers are hitting them 10 ft. off the South side beaches. Bluefish are also still swimming and chasing Menhaden. Although there has been lots of action the past few weeks it is starting to slow down. Any anglers making their way out at night have been using darker colors for artificials. Most anglers are using Mackerel or Menhaden patterns and colors to match the live bait run. Trout are still hot in the kettle ponds.

OFFSHORE – The Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) bite has been pretty good in the deeper water as of late. Anglers can go anywhere from 14-30 miles and expect to hit a school and reel in a decent size. Most of the larger Tuna are in the deeper water however fishermen trolling the surface have caught some smaller sizes on Squid Bars. Free lining Mackerel in deeper water has been the most successful method. Ballyhoo and Sand Eels are also working well.

BAIT REPORT – Menhaden and Mackerel are all running thick and close right now. They are all working well for both inshore and offshore fish.

Plymouth / Cape Cod Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) are doing very well right now. Anglers don’t need to go out very far for to find them between Plymouth and Provincetown. Live Mackerel and Whiting are working well by balloons, just letting them swim around.

INSHORE – The fishing is slow inshore. There are plenty of small fish around however the water temperature is dropping so the fish are beginning to move south. On the shorefront anglers can expect 18-30 inch Bass (Bass, Striped). Topwater plugs have been doing well with the best colors being white, yellow, and green. Live bait alternative are Bunker (Menhaden) or Mackerel.

BAIT REPORT – Buzzards bay is host to a good amount of Menhaden at the moment so it is a good time to stock up before they’re gone.

Plymouth / Cape Cod Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Although it is nearing the end of the season Bluefin Tuna are still biting and coming up around 70 -100 inches. Numbers are down as most boats are hitting 2 fish as opposed to an average of 4 just a couple weeks ago.Large Mackerel and Whiting are working best in roughly 60 ft. of water on the Southern corners or off the racepoint, out in the muck a little bit near the drop off.

INSHORE – The beaches are producing a couple Striped Bass in the 40 inch range although predominantly schoolie sized. Most anglers are finding they can drum up a few fish on tube and worm. Bluefish is still hitting as well on bait most any bait around.

BAIT REPORT – Mackerel are running around. Your best times to catch are around an hour before high tide or an hour before low tide on Sabiki rigs.

The United States is a large country, so we try to keep our Plymouth Fishing Report updated once a week. If you would like to contribute to the Plymouth Fishing Report, feel free to email your fishing tips to mike@proangler.us. We rely on even small contributions to inform us that fishing conditions have changed so we can update the Plymouth Fishing Report.

The Plymouth Fishing Report is brought to you by the Pro Angler team and many, many, highly skilled Captains and bait shop owners.
