Channel Islands Beach/Port Huenere Fishing Report

INSHORE – Shallower water has been producing scattered Sculpin (Scorpionfish, California) on structured bottom. The hot bite inshore has been the Calicos (Bass, Calico). Using live Anchovy or Sardine is your best bet to hook them however swimbaits are a good artificial alternative. Search kelpy areas to find them.

OFFSHORE – Things are heating up for the Spring bite this week and there is no stopping it. Limits of Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Yellowtail & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Widow) have been caught with no surprise! Metal jigs tipped with Squid over rocky bottom are the key. The new bite has been from Lingcod which are firing up and outstanding numbers have been caught the past week. Yellowtail are a bit slow yet but we hope to see better numbers any time.

OFFSHORE – Fish counts are increasing as the season progresses and numbers are off the charts. Easy limits of Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Yellowtail & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Widow) have been caught including a few Lingcod, Sheepshead (Sheepshead, California) and Sculpin (Scorpionfish, California). The day bite has been great using Squid on a metal jighead over structured bottom.

OFFSHORE – For offshore trips this week, it has been no surprise that Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Yellowtail & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Widow) have been the main target anglers on the full day trips. The numbers are decent and even a few Lingcod have made an appearance. Squid on the bottom is always the key to hooking them.

Channel Islands Beach/Port Huenere Fishing Report

INSHORE – Shore and boat anglers haven’t had a hard time finding the Bass (Bass, Calico) this week as they begin to fire up. The warmer water temperatures has had them feeding well on live bait such as Sardine or Anchovy. Alternatively, swimbaits will work well. Search the kelpy areas to find them. If you are fishing structure you shouldn’t be surprised to hook onto a handful of Sheepshead (Sheepshead, California) as well. Shallower structure is producing Sculpin (Scorpionfish, California).

OFFSHORE – Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Yellowtail & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Widow) are open and the main focus for anglers now that nicer weather has arrived. The day bite has produced easy limits all day long with good numbers of Lingcod mixed in. Hook them using Squid on a metal jig over structured bottom such as wrecks and reefs. There has been no problem loading up on these bad boys this week.

Channel Islands Beach/Port Huenere Fishing Report

INSHORE – The half day trips are doing better than the offshore for limits of Rockfish. Again, Lingcod are mixed in along with a few Sculpin (Scorpionfish, California) in the shallower, rocky water. It’s still important to fish the bottom however smaller baits such as Anchovy or Sardine will be productive as well.

OFFSHORE – The full day trips out of the area are seeing fantastic numbers of Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Yellowtail & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Widow) into this week. Limits have been caught along with a mix of some Lingcod as well. Getting your hook right down to the bottom on rocky surfaces is important. Cut Squid with a metal jighead will work well.

Channel Islands Beach/Port Huenere Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Yellowtail & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Widow) opener has been a huge success for anglers in the area this week. We saw easy limits coming in along with good numbers of Lingcod and Cabezon to fire up the season. The day bite has been outstanding. The fish are hungry and haven’t been difficult to hook however getting cut Squid to the bottom on a weighted jig is always a good setup. Search structure both right off the shore and farther out to the deeper offshore waters. We hope to see this bite continue and improve throughout the season.

Channel Islands Beach/Port Huenere Fishing Report

INSHORE – As you may have guessed, whether this week has kept anglers off the water. Dangerous conditions have shut down the coastline for miles so there hasn’t been a lot to report. Those who have made it out in the few weather windows are saying fairly close. Sculpin (Scorpionfish, California), and Bass (Bass, Calico & Bass, Spotted Sand) are the main targets on the early morning trip. Generally swim baits or live bait such as Anchovy or Sardine will work well to hook the bass in kelp, shallow areas. The Sculpin typically hold up on rocky bottom. Keep your eye on the weather if you are heading out and make sure you have safety plans in order.

Channel Islands Beach/Port Huenere Fishing Report

INSHORE – The rain is keeping a lot of anglers inside so far this week. Perch (Surfperch, Barred) are biting out of Carpinteria. Ventura has been quiet. There are rumours of Sea Bass (Sea Bass, White) around the island. There is also some Squid to be found. Bass are doing well in the lakes. When you can find a weather window you can catch a few fish. We hope to see things improve as we move towards the Spring.

Channel Islands Beach/Port Huenere Fishing Report

INSHORE – There hasn’t been a lot going on this week. The weather has been unfavorable so many anglers are staying safe and dry inside. Within a few weeks we expect to see the bite fire up. Normally we would see a few Surfperch (Surfperch, Barred) turning up on the beach. Generally Shrimp will do well to hook them. We hope to see the bite improve into the weekend.

INSHORE – This week anglers are staying fairly close to shore and fishing locally for the most part. The outstanding catch is Sanddab (Sanddab, Pacific). You can find them in shallow, warm areas with soft bottom. They can be caught throughout the day. Keep an eye out for Sharks (Shark, Shortfin Mako) as well. We hope to see things pick up into the weekend.

INSHORE – We caught up with Eric’s Tackle Shop for a fishing report this week, and as you may have heard – and felt, the weather has been way too unfavorable for anglers to be hitting the water from shore or from boats. There are flash flood warnings, high wind and huge waves. We encourage all anglers to take this time to check out some of the great Pro Angler App features and prepare for their next trip when conditions are more ideal. We hope to see things improve soon!

Channel Islands Beach/Port Huenere Fishing Report

INSHORE – This week anglers headed to the Northern Channel Islands for a fantastic bite of both Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue) and Lingcod. The numbers were outstanding and the sizes were great too. We are seeing the best numbers on a full day trip. Generally metal jigs tipped with Squid or Anchovy will do well to hook them right on the bottom. Earlier in the week a few Sheepshead (Sheepshead, California) and Cabezon have turned up as well. The quality as great. We expect this to forecast into the holiday week. The Pro Angler Team wishes you a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. OFFSHORE – The Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue) bite has heated up into this week. We are seeing more solid numbers turn up from the bottom. Anglers are heading out for a half day trip for decent numbers with a few Lingcod mixed in. The overnight trip is far more productive with double numbers and TONS of Lingcod. Metal jigs tipped with Squid or Sardine are still your go-to setup. Drop it right to the bottom on structure to find them.

INSHORE – Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue) are also being caught inshore this week on the same method as offshore. Tip your metal jig with Squid and send it straight to the bottom. Jetties, bridges and rock pilings are your best bet to hook them on the half day trip.

OFFSHORE – The three quarter day trip is focusing on Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue) and Lingcod this week. They can generally be found on rocky, structured bottom. Use a metal jig that will sink right down to the ground. Tip with Squid for the best bite. The numbers are great into this week.

Channel Islands Beach/Port Huenere Fishing Report

INSHORE – From the surf, the fishing hasn’;t been too bad. There is a bit more Barred Perch (Surfperch, Barred). Down the coast we are seeing anglers using Lucky Craft Minnows for Short Halibut (Halibut, Pacific), Sea Bass (Sea Bass, White) and Calicos (Bass, Calico) from the surf. The day bite is most productive. Locally the Calicos are great, the Yellowtail are heating up and the Rockfish (Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Brown & Lingcod) are off the hook. Especially at San Miguel and Santa Rosa. The Rockfish are around 180-240 ft. Some are deeper. Locally anglers are fishing the high 200 ft for limits. Rocks are taking Squid strips or Mackerel for the Ling. Live bait is productive. Plastics or hard Iron jigs will work well.

OFFSHORE – Everything is about the Bluefin Tuna. Anglers are fishing the Tanner bank about 85 miles out. This is the overnight trip. Even the 2 day trips are productive. Live Squid will be your best bait. Heavy line is important as the small fish are upwards of 100 lbs.

Channel Islands Beach/Port Huenere Fishing Report

INSHORE – The half day trips are producing great numbers of Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper) and Lingcod. Stripped Squid on a jighead will catch them on structured bottom. A few Sheepshead are holding up in the same areas. The three quarter day trips a bit farther out are hooking bigger Sheepshead (Sheepshead, California) and Rockfish. Even more Lingcod have been caught. There are a few Calicos (Bass, Calico) being hooked on a full day trip. They seem to prefer Anchovy or Sardine. Swim baits are a good artificial alternative. A few Yellowtail are swimming the nearshore. Iron jigs are your best bet to hook them.

OFFSHORE – The overnight trips are targeting Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper) and Lingcod in fantastic numbers. Easy limits are being caught on metal jigs tipped with Squid. Drop them right to the bottom on reefs and rocky areas. A decent number of Sheepshead (Sheepshead, California) have also turned up.

Channel Islands Beach/Port Huenere Fishing Report

INSHORE – We expect to see the temperatures begin to drop this week. The surf fishing will heat up and we will start to see a more normal run of fish. There should be better Perch (Surfperch, Barred) turn up. Catalina is still fishing well for Calico Bass (Bass, Calico). There are still some nice Bonito (Bonito, Pacific) around as well. Ventura are producing sizes up to 9 lbs. They are also towards Santa Cruz Island. Small Sardines or Anchovy type pattern in Olive/white or Blue/White will hook the bigger sizes on a 1/O hook. The Bass are taking similar setups of bigger, bulkier flies that move water. Clousers in chartreuse are a great bet.

INSHORE – Calicos (Bass, Calico) are still biting into this week. They are cooling off as fall approaches. We are still waiting for things to get back to normal on the surf. Perch (Surfperch, Barred) and Croaker (Croaker, Yellowfin & Croaker, Spotfin) are turning up on hard baits. Croaker can also be found on the pier. Around the Ventura area we are seeing Halibut (Halibut, Pacific) and Stripers (Bass, Striped). There are no reports of Sea Bass (Sea Bass, White) just yet.

OFFSHORE – This week we are moving into fall and seeing a great outer island Rockfish (Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper, & Lingcod & Bocaccio) and Lingcod bite. There is still some great surface activity from Yellowtail. They have backed off as the water changes a bit but are still biting if you put some time in.

INSHORE – Sheepshead (Sheepshead, California) continue into this week. As usual you can find them on rock piles, jetties and anything with structure. Anchovy or Sardine are their weakness.

OFFSHORE – Fishing has been a bit tough into this week however some anglers have still managed to hit the water. There are decent numbers of Yellowtail that have been caught on iron jigs and live bait. The sizes are varied. Anglers should be prepared to put some time in to hook them. The Rockfish (Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Vermillion) numbers are slowing down into this week. Channel Islands Beach/Port Huenere Fishing Report

INSHORE – Inshore, the Bonito (Bonito, Pacific) are hot this week. They will take just about anything including plugs, spoons, Sardine or Anchovy. They are scattered just about everywhere and not difficult to find at all. A handful of Barracuda (Barracuda, California) have turned up on structure as well. There are a few Sheepshead mixed in.

OFFSHORE – The Yellowtail are showing great numbers so far this week. Anglers are easily bringing them into the boat. If you can get your hands on some live Squid it will work wonders. Iron jigs are also productive to find them running along the bottom. Search the outer islands or kelp paddies offshore to find them. The Rockfish (Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Black) continues to do well into this week. Metal jigs and soft plastics will do well to hook them. A bucktail with a small Sardine will also be productive. Search the structured areas offshore such as reefs and debris. A few Lingcod have begun to make an appearance.

Channel Islands Beach/Port Huenere Fishing Report

INSHORE – The surf fishing has been pretty quiet this week. Very few Perch (Surfperch, Barred) and Croaker are around. The occasional short Halibut (Halibut, Pacific) has shown up however they are small. The beach is still building itself back up from the winter storms. The boats are getting Yellowtail around Anacapa Island. They are on fire. Calicos (Bass, Calico) are on a tear. Plenty of Bonito (Bonito, Pacific) and Barracuda (Barracuda, Great) are hanging around. Sardines are working for pretty much everything.

OFFSHORE – Near the outer islands we are seeing Squid and Sea Bass (Sea Bass, White) to be found there as well as Yellowtail and a few Halibut (Halibut, Pacific).Squid is a good bait for Sea Bass. Rockfishing (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Olive & Lingcod) remains excellent. They are focusing in 240-300 at first but sometimes they are going deeper. They seem to be eating anything.

BAIT REPORT – You can find Squid to jig up this week.

Channel Islands Beach/Port Huenere Fishing Report

INSHORE – The hot bite this week has definitely been the Calicos (Bass, Calico) so far. There have been fantastic number showing up. Swimbaits or live Anchovy are two great setup choices. Keep in mind as the temperature increases we will see them holding up in deeper, cooler areas. The best time to fish for them will be early morning or later into the evening once the heat has dissipated at bit. Moving off the shore a bit we have found Bonito (Bonito, Pacific) swimming structured areas on the bottom. Anchovy or Sardine will be a good bet to hook them. A few Barracuda (Barracuda, California) are mixed in the same area. Sheepshead are swimming the shore structures. Of course, Sculpin (Scorpionfish, California) are always biting if you are searching the rocky areas on the shore.

OFFSHORE – The Yellowtail numbers are slowly increasing. They have not quite lit up yet however they are there for anglers targeting them. Try throwing an iron jig either down to the bottom or keeping it close to the surface as the Yellowtail are known to be caught in any depth. The Rockfish (Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Black) continue to bite into this week. The numbers are steady.

Channel Islands Beach/Port Huenere Fishing Report

INSHORE – Anglers are spending the day on the water however they are not heading to far out. We are seeing some nice Yellowtail numbers come out of the nearshore this week. They are mixed in with some Barracuda (Barracuda, California) and Halibut (Halibut, Pacific). Iron jigs or Mackerel on a circle hook is a great method to hook the Yellowtail, while Sardines and jerk baits will work better if you are targeting Halibut. The Calico (Bass, Calico) bite is on fire as we see consistent numbers turning up. Use swim baits or spoons to bring them in. If you can find Squid this will also be productive.

OFFSHORE – The Rockfish (Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Black) bite continues into this week as they are mixed in with some Lingcod. Try using a metal jig with a strip of Squid for some great sizes.

Channel Islands Beach/Port Huenere Fishing Report

INSHORE – There is still a scattered Sheepshead bite around the structured areas. Shrimp and Fiddler Crabs are working well to hook them if you are willing to put time in to find them. Meanwhile, the Calicos (Bass, Calico) are finally on fire. Search the kelp areas jigging swimbaits to hook them. If you prefer live bait you can always throw a Sardine or Anchovy into the swells. Halibut (Halibut, Pacific) are scattered. Yellowtail have been producing well and we are seeing great numbers come up. Mackerel are their ideal live bait however iron jigs will hook them as well. Surfperch (Surfperch, Sand) have remained consistent.

OFFSHORE – The Rockfish (Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Starry) continue to bite well into this week. Metal jigs are your best bet, as long as you put them right down on the bottom. In shallower water, Diamond jigs will be killer. They will also go after bucktails or octopus type soft plastics. If you are fishing live use Anchovy or Sardines for the best sizes. Add a strip of Squid for a great combo. They are mixed in with some Lingcod.

Channel Islands Beach/Port Huenere Fishing Report

INSHORE – This week we are seeing boats go out for three quarter day trips and be fairly successful. There are not a whole lot of different fish swimming however there are tons of Sanddab, Pacific and Bonito, Pacific to be caught. The Sanddab are turning up in the triple digits and anglers are having no trouble stocking up. Swimming fairly close to the surface they are not difficult to find over a soft bottom, shallow area. They are preferring warmer water so anglers don’t have to go far to find them. The Bonito are not quite as hot but still providing a plentiful bite. The numbers are good and the sizes are fair. They can be caught on the slow troll or simply casting. Anglers using lures should consider throwing something shiney with silver to attract them. Anglers preferring live bait can opt to use live Anchovy or small Sardines to hook them.

Channel Islands Beach/Port Huenere Fishing Report

INSHORE – The action in this area has slowed down quite a bit in terms of varieties of fish. There are still some great bags to be had throughout the inshore however. Anglers have been hitting the water for three quarter day trips and coming back with huge amounts of Sanddab, Pacific and a solid catch of Bonito, Pacific. Anglers will fish along sandy bottoms to catch the Sanddabs. Letting the bait sit for a few minutes, if they don’t feel any action it’s time for a new spot. Sanddabs will hit just about any live bait so if you don’t get a hit almost right away they are probably not there. The Bonito can also be a fun catch since they, too, will hit live bait such as anchovies or artificials on the troll such as a flashy plug. They can be found in smaller sizes off piers or larger sizes on offshore banks and islands. They are also a great bait for anglers targeting Sharks.

There has also been a consistent bite of Bonito, Pacific in this area as well. They are swimming the nearshore and anglers will generally troll a shiny spoon to hook them. Smaller fish including a lively anchovy or sardine will be productive as well.

INSHORE – With the recent closure of Rockfish offshore, the main focus has been on the inshore catch this week. There are huge amounts of Sanddab, Pacific swimming this week. They can be fun to catch as they will put of up a fight similar to a Halibut or Flounder. They are also a bit easier to hook as they will eat just about anything from Shrimp to Squid, Anchovy and even Mussels. Some anglers will suggest Sea Worms as well. Using these on the sandy bottom will typically guarantee a good catch. There are also some Bonito, Pacific swimming this week. The numbers are not on fire but are decent for anglers targeting them. The sizes have been keeper mixed in with some bigger and smaller as well.

Bonito, Pacific are showing up again in this area. They are not on fire however when targeted are coming up in decent numbers. Bass, Calico are still lingering in the area. They are fairly spotty this week however their sizes are good as well. They are loving the live Shrimp bait so if you are throwing that it will definitely increase your odds of hitting one.

OFFSHORE – There have been some great catches over the holiday so far. Anglers are catching their limit on Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Starry) as well a decent bite on Lingcod and a great amount of Sea Bass, White. They are just beginning to show up so their sizes are not great at this point however we do hope to see them increase within the next few weeks.

Channel Islands Beach/Port Huenere Fishing Report

INSHORE – Sheepshead are doing extremely well this week from the inshore. Both their numbers and sizes are great as they go after live Crabs as their first preference. Mixed in with them are some great numbers of Yellowtail as well and though they haven’t heated up yet they’re there for anglers targeting them. Plenty of action is available for anglers heading out for the holiday.

OFFSHORE – Now that conditions have settled down we have a lot of action reported from the offshore this week. Lingcod are absolutely on fire coming up in great numbers so far. Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Starry) are turning up in triple digit numbers as Whitefish begin to show up. There should be no trouble finding the bite this holiday as the fish seem to be just about everywhere.

Channel Islands Beach/Port Huenere Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Wind has shut just about everything down. It has been too strong for any anglers to get out this week. It is just slightly beginning to clear up however the swells and conditions will likely not have the water ready for the weekend even if the weather is nice. The beaches and piers are pretty torn up so far this week. There has been some Squid showing up in the area along with Sea Bass, Black and Yellowtail that are expected to swim after the conditions become more favorable. It’s not easy to tell when that will be. Anglers who head out over the weekend can always consult our Tips feature which provides additional information and suggestions to help improve the catch.

Channel Islands Beach/Port Huenere Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – There is a lot of great fishing in the offshore this week. Big Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper) are showing up just about everywhere on frozen Squid, Live Squid and plastic jigs. The islands are an especially great place to find them. This is about a three quarter day of fishing and the results are also turning up some Lings (Lingcod) in great numbers as well. They are loving Mackerel as well as the Squid varieties in the shallower areas this week. Book Your holiday trip today before the season closes December 31st. Take advantage of great offers on three quarter day trips!

Channel Islands Beach/Port Huenere Fishing Report

INSHORE – Although there is a mixed bag of fish inshore the surf is not what our sources had hoped for this week. Perch (Surfperch, Barred) and Croaker continue to show up in good numbers, however the sizes have not been extraordinary so far. Lugworms, sand crab and berkley gulp are catching them on the beaches this week. There have also been Corbina, California turning up in various sizes throughout the same spots as the Perch. Bass, Calico have been swimming around the Ventura area on many of the rocky structures. Most anglers are targeting Bass this week as they have been plentiful with decent sizes. They have been taking Squid or lucky Crab Minnows as an artificial alternative. Once the Red Crab make their way out anglers hope there will still be Squid swimming the beaches and that Sea Bass, Black and Yellowtail will make their way in to feast on them.

OFFSHORE – Most anglers in the deep water are targeting Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Lingcod) this week as they have been the most plentiful. They have been in roughly 100 and more feet of water and moving farther out each week. Everyone is going to the deeper water due to the Red Crab situation. Our sources suspect that Sea Bass, White and Yellowtail should be around in the offshore and are waiting for the crabs to leave so they can move in and find Squid.

BAIT REPORT – Squid are moving along the beaches this week. There have been reports of Croaker on the nearshore as well however most anglers are not using them for bait this week. Angler’s Den has some fantastic deals on Rods and Reels for the holidays! Stop in and check them out for your favorite angler this year!

Channel Islands Beach/Port Huenere Fishing Report

INSHORE – A lot of inshore anglers are targeting Squid this week to stock up and make bait. They have moved right in towards the beach off the point. In the nearshore there is a solid Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper & Lingcod) bite along with some Whitefish and Sheepshead.

OFFSHORE – Now that the weather has calmed down a bit this week there has been a bit more action offshore. Anglers are seeing a spotty Yellowtail bite in the deep water along with a few Sea Bass, White. They have been hitting Squid or Sardines. The bite is expected to increase in the next few weeks as the Squid has moved into the beach and that is usually a sign to expect an increase.

BAIT REPORT – There are no bait running to report yet this week.

Channel Islands Beach/Port Huenere Fishing Report

INSHORE – Action is beginning to settle down as the Winter fishery sets in. Bonito, Pacific and small Yellowtail are being caught as well as some Bass, Calico. The bigger Yellows are going deeper but they can still be found in good numbers. Anglers are using Anchovies or Sardines in 200-300 ft of water, generally hiding around structures. The beach will fire up once the weather drops a little more.

OFFSHORE – Unfavorable weather has made offshore fishing quite difficult. Anglers have not made it out at this point so there are no reports at this time. If fishermen decide to head out when the conditions calm down they can always check out our Tips feature which provides additional information and suggestions to help improve their catch. In addition, anglers can head into Fishermen’s Spot Fly Fishing Specialties for an up to the minute report.

Channel Islands Beach/Port Huenere Fishing Report

INSHORE – High winds have made fishing close to shore quite difficult this week. There was a decent Calico Bass bite previous to the weather but seems to be vacant since. Sheepshead have made an appearance in the shallower water and anglers are reporting some good sizes coming in. They are preferring anything live however are not picky about artificial either.

OFFSHORE – There are no bait running to report at this time.

Channel Islands Beach/Port Huenere Fishing Report

INSHORE – Perch (Surfperch, barred & Surfperch, striped) have made their way in, finally and anglers are excited. They have been hitting lugworms as a bait preference. There are also some Bass, Striped that have been hitting incidentally along with the Perch. Anglers are also using gulp sandworms or lucky grass to hook either of these. There have been a few reports of Yellowtail in shallow water around the island if you get the chance to make the trip out there.

OFFSHORE – The weather has been very tough the past week as it has not laid down very long. Anglers have not made it offshore so no reports have come in for this area this week. If you decide to brave the conditions this weekend you can always consult our Tips feature providing lots of information and suggestions on your favorite fish. Of course, you can always visit Eric’s Tackle Shop for an up to the minute report.

Oxnard Fishing Report

OFFSHORE- Everyone is offshore! It’s busy on the water as anglers are searching for a few different species. Yellowfin has been difficult to find but are still turning up. Wahoo have been biting well and even Striped Marlin and Blue Marlin. Anglers are using popping marlin lures around 11-13 inches in mean Joe green. This has been the hottest color of the year. If you can’t get your hands on mean Joe green, pink and white has been a close second and some are still using Mackerel for trolling. If you’re fishing offshore you’re looking at depths around 500-1000 ft including around the island including off the coast of Santa Barbara too.

INSHORE – If you decide to fish inshore you may get lonely as everyone has been out in the deeper water. There are no reports at this time however should you decide to venture along the beaches you can always refer to our Tips feature whereby selecting your fish of choice you can view suggestions, bait alternatives and ‘how to’s.

BAIT REPORT – There are some Mackerel running right now. This is perfect for offshore trolling. Taking into consideration that everyone is offshore fishing, you may have to compete for bait so make sure you grab some while you can.

Oxnard Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – There is no Salmon to be seen – a lot of them have migrated north to Oregan over the last few years. There are more Tuna to the South and if you are craving big, delicious game, give them a try. There is also a Yellowtail bite that you might be able to capitalize on by dropping squid over rocks.

INSHORE – There are some Bass biting, and if you are inshore fishing around the islands there is Yellowtail there. There is also some Bonita and Barracuda around the islands. If you want to target the Striped Bass, go with Sardines, Anchovies, or swim baits for them – they especially like the big hammer swim baits.

BAIT REPORT – You could catch mackerel and chunk them up if you really want to catch your own bait.
