North Sea Fishing Report

INSHORE – During the Winter season the migratory fish have left the area and the variety of fish available in State waters are slim. Some anglers may still fish for Pollock and Cod, Atlantic. There are not a whole lot of boats still in the water so be sure to check with your local tackle shops to see who is still running trips. For inshore anglers, fishing from docks and piers around NY can yield some great catches of Herring. As long as the bays do not completely freeze over, you should be able to catch them using little more than a rainbow colored Sabiki rig. As we find varying weather conditions from day to day we encourage all anglers to stay safe and warm when fishing. This is a great opportunity to check out some of the current Pro Angler App features along with new additions coming soon. We look forward to bringing you more great Pro Reports when the bite fires back up.

INSHORE – Herring can almost always be caught inshore durng the winter. They hold up around docks and structures for the most part. You can generally Sabiki them up fairly easily. Surf fishing is closing down at this point. Few Stripers (Bass, Striped) remain in the area. Anglers are heading towards Block Island to fish them. It is quite cold so many anglers done for the season and staying warm inside.

North Sea Fishing Report

INSHORE – The surf fishing season has come to a close for us. The fish have migrated out of the area. Bass (Bass, Striped) and Bluefish were phenomenal along with the False Albacore (Bonito, Little Tunny) bite this year. Cod fish (Cod, Atlantic), Blackfish (Tautog) and Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) can still be found on the bottom. Cod are up to 10 lbs. Head East towards Block Island for the best bite. Tautog and Sea Bass are a bit scattered. There are not a lot of anglers heading out for them. It is quite cold so many anglers done for the season and staying warm inside. MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM THE PRO ANGLER TEAM!

BAIT REPORT – Herring can still be caught towards Montauk and to the East. Centerport Long Island is holding Herring around the Dam.

North Sea Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Scallop season is winding down at this point along with a lot of saltwater fishing. Some anglers are heading towards Montauk where there are still some small Stripers (Bass, Striped) on the beach. They are still being caught outside on the troll and using Diamond Jigs. Most are shorts as well. The bigger fish have moved off and we are mostly seeing the small sizes. Blackfish (Tautog) are on the wrecks a bit farther out. Green Crabs are best when they are available. Clams are a great alternative and may catch Cod (Cod, Atlantic) and Ling (Hake) incidentally.

North Sea Fishing Report

INSHORE – Most anglers are scalloping at this point. Weakfish are in the gut so you’ll need a boat. Bottom rigs are all you’ll need to fish for them. Clams or Squid are good baits to use. Just be sure not to set the hook too hard. Stripers (Bass, Striped) have headed South to deeper water. Blackfish (Tautog) are open for a few more days (December 15) and are biting around Montauk. They are the main target of most anglers.

BAIT REPORT – Bunker (Menhaden) seem to have moved out. There may be some Herring (Threadfin) out there under the birds in the harbor.

North Sea Fishing Report

INSHORE – Peconic bay is pretty well done for the year. The beachfront is holding schoolie Bass taking curly tails or swimming plugs. Moving tide is best to fish from Riverhead to Orient. Plum Island is holding Blackfish (Tautog) on the North side and around Rocky Point. There are still some small schools of Albies (Bonito, Little Tunny) off Truman Beach and the Point.

North Sea Fishing Report

INSHORE – There isn’t much going on this week. There are some fish swimming the ocean but the wind has made getting on the water difficult. Prior to this system anglers were finding Bluefish off the beach up to 20 lbs taking artificials. The ocean had occasional Bass (Bass, Striped) here and there but they are mostly small. We expect most of the Bass have moved South.

North Sea Fishing Report

INSHORE – Loads of Stripers are all over the bays and the back bays for anglers casting rubber Shad and Bucktails, Diamond Jigs or Popping Plugs. Plenty of fish are swimming the Smith Point Bridge. The inshore bays are loaded with Bunker and other bait. Stripers are there and feeding on them. Along the beach has had a similar bite. There is a lot of Bunker and bait moving down the surf and Bass are hitting the bait schools. When the subtle wind pushes the bait to the beach the fishing is great. A bit of surf movement will always bring them in. There is a bit of Tautog (Blackfish) being caught. A lot are shorts with a few keepers in the mix. Wreck fishing is picking up with decent sized Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) and a few keeper Tautog. The bite is hit or miss in terms of when to get out on the water. Changing tides are your best bet. Clams and Squid are more productive for the Sea Bass and Porgy (Scup). Green Crabs are great for the Tautog. Stripers are biting towards Gardiners islands taking three way rigs with bucktails or drifting live Eels in 40-50 ft of water. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – The Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) bite has been slow. Hudson Canyon and Veatch Canyon are your best places to search for them. Swordfishing (Billfish – Swordfish) has been pretty steady. They are in 300-600 ft of water. Whole Squid is best to catch them at night with a glow stick and a rattle. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

BAIT REPORT – Bunker (Menhaden) are in the bays and the beach.

North Sea Fishing Report

INSHORE – There are a lot of Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) in the Sound still. They are in about 80 ft of water. Blackfish (Tautog) are in the Sound as well but the farther East you go the better they are. Bluefish and Bass (Bass, Striped) are swimming the surf with a few leftover Albies (Bonito, Little Tunny). Find the right tide to fish them. There isn’t much coming out of the bay this week. The North side of Plum Island has a lot of Stripers.

OFFSHORE – Tuna (Tuna, Bigeye) up to 130lbs are biting well. A few Yellowfin (Tuna, Yellowfin) are mixed in. Bluefin (Tuna, Bluefin) are on their way. The Bluefin we’ve seen so far are small and can be caught on the troll on the way out or back. Most fish are 100 miles or more offshore. Overnight we are seeing small Swords (Billfish – Swordfish). There’s some decent fish to be caught at the Hudson Canyon. It’s doing much better than the Atlantic Canyon. North Sea Fishing Report

INSHORE – The surf fishing is decent on the Sound and Southeast. Albacore (Bonito, Little Tunny) are being caught along with Bass (Bass, Striped) and Bluefish. Bucktails and Polaris Poppers are good for the Bass. Occasionally a Diamond jig with a green tube on the end is productive. The wind has kept a lot of anglers inside. On the oceanside we are seeing a hit and miss bite. Blackfish (Tautog) are scattered. Most are small. Search the rock piles to find them.

North Sea Fishing Report

INSHORE – Bluefish and Bass (Bass, Striped) are chasing Bunker around the island. They are literally making waves as they push the bait. The water is still warm so there are quite a few short Bass. The run should move a little more in the Shelter Island area. If the bait slows down they will be nice and hungry during their migration. Big Bluefish up to 12 lbs are not uncommon. It has been a little tough getting them to bite with all of the bait in the water. Anglers are live lining Bunker to hook them. The wind has kept anglers inside as they are not heading far offshore. There are still some anglers targeting Porgy (Scup) however this has been a scattered bite. Scallops are scattered. There have been some reports of them inside however they are also reported from down in the Peconics.

BAIT REPORT – There is an unbelievable amount of Bunker (Menhaden) swimming this week. They are all over the island and can be snagged or netted.

North Sea Fishing Report

INSHORE – Off the beaches, anglers are doing well with Bass (Bass, Striped), Bluefish and False Albacore (Bonito, Little Tunny) that are still hanging around. Quality Weakfish are still biting into this week as well. Porgy (Scup) and Blackfish (Tautog) are up around the North side of Plum Island. Towards Pigeon Rip we are seeing great Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black). Bluefish and Stripers are mixed in.

North Sea Fishing Report

INSHORE – In the bay we are seeing Bluefish to 4 lbs with a few bigger fish up to 10 lbs mixed in. There is a mixed bag of small Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black), Porgy (Scup) and Blowfish (Puffer, Smooth). Small Stripers (Bass, Striped) are turning up around the Smith Point Bridge area and Buoy 14 and 15 in the bay. There are some nice sizes in the inlet on live Eels and live bait. Anglers are also drifting Clams. Blackfish (Tautog) is doing well along the West Jetty of the inlet as well as all jetties on the inlets on the South shore including reefs and structure. They are mixed with Sea Bass and Porgy. Surf casting is picking up on the sand beaches along the South shore for Stripers and Bluefish. Popping Plugs or Diamond Jigs with green/white tails are best. Fresh Clams are working as well. Things are heating up for the fall run as fish invade the beach and inlet. It’s a lot of surf casting, drifting Eels and drifting Clams in the inlet. Green Crabs are best for the Blackfin. It’s been rough for anglers getting offshore due to the wind and heavy seas from the storm. INSHORE – Things are slow this week. A few Porgy (Scup) are still around. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are sporadic. When you find them they are really good in deep water. Bluefish are here and there. Bass (Bass, Striped) are pretty well the same.

North Sea Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Sound is holding Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) and a few scattered Porgy (Scup). Bluefish are mixed in there also. They are also on the point with Sea Bass as well. Stripers (Bass, Striped) are slow in this part of the sound. In the Bay near Robin’s Island we are seeing Blowfish (Puffer, Smooth), Kingfish (Kingfish, Southern), and Porgy by Buoy 22. Buoy 17 is holding Blowfish and Bluefish on the last few hours of the incoming tide. Weakfish are in Noyack Bay to Paradise Point. Sea Bass are small, if you can get out on the North side of Plum Island on Pigeon Rip during a slack tide you will find some good sizes.

North Sea Fishing Report

INSHORE – Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] is closed this week but fishing was good. There is a lot of mixed fish in the bay. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black), Blowfish (Puffer, Smooth), small Stripers, Snappers, and Weakfish are biting. Bigger Stripers (Bass, Striped) up to 20 lbs are in the inlet. There are also Bluefish in the 10 lb or more range. They are drifting Clams or live Eels and casting Peanut Bunker for the Stripers. Even Porgy (Scup) are productive. The incoming tide has been best. All in all, the Striper fishing is decent. Gardiners is producing Striped Bass up to 40 lbs trolling parachutes or trolling bucktails and umbrella rigs. Eels are working out here as well. Look for them in 40-60ft of water. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – There are still some Sharks to be caught although they are slowing down. Yellowfin and Bluefin (Tuna, Yellowfin & Tuna, Bluefin) are biting around 30 miles. The recent storm has pushed them out. Anglers are trolling until they find the bite then switch to chunking or jigging. The night bite is best on the chunk. INSHORE – Porgy (Scup) and Snapper (Bluefish) are the main bites inshore this week. They are swimming the Peconics. Montauk has been red hot for a lot of different fish from Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] to Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) to Stripers (Bass, Striped) so a lot of anglers are heading to this area.

North Sea Fishing Report

INSHORE – The weather is just starting to turn back to more ideal conditions recently. The fishing has been thrown off a bit and a lot of anglers have opted to stay inside. There was some consistent Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] biting before the storm hit. We expect a great Striper (Bass, Striped) bite very soon as Montauk has been productive in deeper water and in the back. The South shore should heat up quickly. Clams have worked well as bait, especially throughout the inlet. The big fish should be here in the next few weeks. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) and Porgy (Scup) were on the inshore reefs. Most of the fish are shorts. Blowfish (Puffer, Smooth) and Snappers (Bluefish) can be found in the bay. Once things really settle down we will be able to see how the fish were affected by the storm. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – Prior to the storm Yellowfin and Bluefin (Tuna, Yellowfin & Tuna, Bluefin) were as close as 15 miles. Anglers were trolling or chunking Butterfish or Bunker to hook them. A few White Marlin (Billfish – Marlin, White) and Mahi (Dolphin) were also caught on the troll. You can also toss baits around debris for Mahi. Shark (Shark, Shortfin Mako) fishing is slow as most anglers are targeting the Tuna. The Canyons were a bit slow as the best bites are coming from inside 50 miles. In the 100 square, there are Tuna up to 100 lbs on the chunk or jigs. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

INSHORE – Striped Bass (Bass, Striped) remain great out in Montauk. Live Spot are working well to hook them. The day bite is best. Live Porgy or Bunker will work as well. Trolling wire line outfits is a great alternative with a variety of different lures. In the evening live Eels are best. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black), Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] and Cod (Cod, Atlantic) are East of Montauk in deeper water on structure. Bluefish are on Plum Gut and in the Race. Striped Bass are a little scarce here. The Peconics are having a hard time with the hot water and Red Tide. The Weakfish are still pretty good, although the numbers are dropping a bit. Kingfish (Kingfish, Northern) and Blowfish (Puffer, Smooth) have also been caught. Snapper fishing is not as good as it should be at this time of year.

North Sea Fishing Report

INSHORE – All good Fluking [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] is in full swing around the South shore. Lots of keepers and limits are turning up. Fish to 12 lbs have been caught on Killies, Spearing, Squid and Gulp on the back of White or Chartreuse Bucktails. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) and Porgy (Scup) are on the reef but most are short as they’ve been picked out. The deeper wrecks are holding bigger fish. You’ll have to move past 80 ft to 120 ft or better. Bassing (Bass, Striped) is hot at Montauk but it slows down the farther West you head. There are some Albacore (Bonito, Little Tunny) scooting around and they are really close to the beach and all the way out to 30 miles. They are feeding on small bait. The Fluke are hot in the Peconics and out towards Gardiners along with Striped Bass. The North shore is good for Porgy. Snappers (Small Bluefish) are doing fine as well. Spearing or Silversides will hook them. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

Even Smith’s Cove has been hot. Porgy (Scup) are everywhere and they are big. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are doing extremely well out of Gardiners around the flats. The Bass (Bass, Striped) are hitting off Little Gull and there are a fair amount of keepers. some 48’s are coming right off the beach on poppers on the early morning bite. They are around 2 lbs. Blowfish (Puffer, Smooth) can be netted. This is a good sign for a good Blowfish season if the Bass don’t eat them up. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – Things are starting to pick up in the Canyons. Around the Hudson there has been some Bigeye and Yellowfin (Tuna, Bigeye & Tuna, Yellowfin) caught. Porgy are all over the buoys with some Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) mixed in. North Sea Fishing Report

INSHORE – It’s a challenging time of year for anglers. The water temperature is rising and the bigger fish are moving North or East. We have seen a great run of good fish but right now the best place to find a good Striper (Bass, Striped) is the Plum Gut or the race which is just East of Plum Island. Most are small and not keepers. Anglers are deep jigging them with a heavy weight. Pork Rind Substitutes are working well too. Bluefish are persisting throughout the season. They are holding up in the ferry slips. They are over 20 lbs, which is uncommon. Most Bluefish in the Peconics are smaller, around 2-8 lbs. A lot of Porgy, Weakfish and Bluefish are hot. Tight Lines Tackle Inc is closed on Wednesdays but open every other day! Stop in for some great products!

OFFSHORE – Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are now open. Most are not keepers but if you put some time in you may find a few. The Fluking [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] is not what we have hoped. The better fish are in the ocean from 60-90 ft.

INSHORE – Anglers are searching for Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] this week. They have been slow so far. There are reports from Peconic Bay and Shinnecock Bay. They are a bit scattered though and there are no big concentrations. Buoy 17 in the Jessop’s Bay will produce Fluke and you may pick up some Striped Bass from the bottom. Porgy (Scup) are still in the middle grounds and buoy 6 off Cedar Point. Stripers (Bass, Striped) can also be found in the area on bucktails. Mattituck Inlet has some decent Fluke however the farther you go West, the better the bite. Porgy are off the motel and the firing range.

Stripers (Bass, Striped) are swimming the inlet and are taking clams drifted with Clam Chum. They are also hot by Gardiners. They are taking bucktails with a heavy sinker and long leader. Anglers are drifting and doing very well.

OFFSHORE – Shark (Shark, Shortfin Mako) is picking up offshore this week. We are seeing some good sizes coming in. Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) are way out at the Canyon and have not moved in.

BAIT REPORT – Blue Crabs seem to be making a comeback this year. Bunker (Menhaden) and Spearing are swimming the inside.

North Sea Fishing Report

INSHORE – There are quite a bit of fish around. If you are heading out you’ll have your choice of just about anything. Plenty of Bass (Bass, Striped) and Bluefish can be found. There are not many Bass on the beach however the backwaters and inlets are holding great numbers. Bluefish are thick in the inlet and behind the inlet in Chinecock. Bunker are swimming this area as well as the Peconics. Fluking [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] has been picking up. Porgy (Scup) has been decent out by Gardiners. We expect these conditions to continue into the weekend.

OFFSHORE – Going offshore has not been super productive. Threshers (Shark, Thresher) are coming out of Shinnecock. Some anglers are heading to South Jersey. We have not seen any Tuna (Tuna, Blackfin) at the Canyon just yet however there seems to be quite a bit of bait holding up so we expect to see some fish move in soon.

BAIT REPORT – Bunker (Menhaden) are swimming the inlets and back in the Peconics this week. There are some Sandeels and Spearing around but they are slim compared to the Bunker.

OFFSHORE – We are starting to get a little bit of Bluefin (Tuna, Bluefin) out at the canyons. There hasn’t really been a good chunk bite so make sure you stick to trolling baits and trolling lures. There are also some sharks out there but the focus has been on the Tunas.

BAIT REPORT – Inside we’re seeing quite a few pods of Bunker (Menhaden) for those hunting for bait.

INSHORE – Captain Steven Sr reports that despite Mother Nature we beat our way out to the grounds. We did not have a great start to the trip due to the conditions. Fishing was very slow. By 11AM conditions straightened out and we had good drifts with excellent fishing until about 2PM with double headers coming over the rails. The weather gave us a curveball and fishing slowed down. By about 5PM things changed and we started picking away again until we had to go home. Captain Steven Sr and mates Steve “Ho” and Steve Martinez filleted for over 3 hours sending everyone home with a great product. All in all it was a good trip with everyone taking home plenty of fish. High hook was Michael Bunch from East Hampton, NY with Tile (Tilefish, Blueline), Hake and Barrelfish. The first place pool went to Joey Montalto from Bronx, NY and second place went to Jacob Leifer from Hershey, PA. The largest edible pool went to Adam Nowak from Linden, NJ with a Barrelfish.

North Sea Fishing Report

INSHORE – Weather has made inshore inlets and piers fairly inconsistent. Lingcod and Cod (Cod, Atlantic) can be caught while drifting inshore with clams. The Herring reports have been pretty much nonexistent.. Some areas along Long Island have seen Pollock (Pollock, Atlantic) on red, white, or pink artificials. Diamond jigs are also popular. The Pollock fishing is fairly sporadic so there isn’t really a best spot to fish. At least a bad day of fishin’ beats a good day of workin’. Be sure to check out our Fish Guide for tips on Pollock, Cod, and Lingcod for some additional angling tips!

OFFSHORE – The weather and time of year has made reports limited for this area. Most offshore anglers are heading to water up to 180ft deep while looking for Cod (Cod, Atlantic). There’s going to be some Pollock, Lingcod, and Skates (Skate, Winter) in the same areas. Lately the waters to the west of Long Island haven’t fished as well as waters to the east. Dogfish (Dogfish, Spiny) are usually caught out there too. Check out our GPS hotspots for some nonpublic numbers to try on your next outing. Spring is just around the corner and we’re looking forward to getting back on the water with you when the fishing, and hopefully the weather, heats up!

North Sea Fishing Report

INSHORE – As the season is coming to a close there is not a whole lot of action in the area this week. Our reports are finding most determined anglers are heading elsewhere for fish. There are no signs of Striper (Bass, Striped) as of yet this week which close December 15th. They are likely finishing up their migration out. Should anglers decide to try their luck to take advantage of the last open weekend they can always check out our Tips feature which provides additional information and suggestions to help improve the bite.

BAIT REPORT – There has been no bait reported to be running so far this week. Most anglers have been switching to artificials to hook any remaining fish.

North Sea Fishing Report

INSHORE – There have been plenty of Blackfish (Tautog) stacking up in the end of Sound this week, along with some Sea Bass, Black. Both are swimming on the ocean side. There are also some Stripers (Bass, Striped) that can be caught along the point as well.

OFFSHORE – The weather has been rough in this area lately and this week there have been no reports of anglers heading to the offshore. The weather has become even less favorable and most fishermen are choosing to stay on the inside. If conditions lie down in time for the holidays anglers can always check out our Tips feature which provides additional information and suggestions to help improve the catch. North Sea Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Sound has the most action this week. Sea Bass, Black are on fire in the deep water from 75-100 ft, South of the Potato Barge. Most anglers are using any type of Clam to hook them. There are also some small, short Stripers (Bass, Striped) on the beaches still leftover from the previous run. The Albacore (Bonito, Little Tunny) have moved out by now however there are still some Blackfish (Tautog) that can be caught off the points.

OFFSHORE – The weather has been rough in this area lately however this has not stopped some determined boaters from heading out. There have been reports of Tuna, Yellowfin at the canyon. They are out there and anglers are chunking for them using Butterfish or Sardines. The early morning and late day bite still remains the best. Dick’s Bait & Tackle 631-281-9070

North Sea Fishing Report

INSHORE – The fishing around Gardiners seems to be spotty as far as keeper Bass (Bass, Striped) are concerned. 3 way rigs are still working from the boats and anglers on the various points should be able to catch a few fish with plugs or live Eels.

OFFSHORE – The canyons are producing lots of Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin & Tuna, Albacore). There have also been reports of some Tuna, Bigeye out there as well. Anglers have been chunking using Butterfish or Sardines to hook all three species. The early morning or late evening seems to remain the best time to be head out as the action continues to be fairly scattered throughout the day.

BAIT REPORT – There are no bait running to report at this time. For alternative suggestions anglers can always check out the Pro Angler Tip feature that provides additional information to help improve the catch.

North Sea Fishing Report

INSHORE – The sound has been packed with Bass, Striped, Bluefish and even some False Albacore (Bonito, Little Tunny). Anglers are using Eels, Menhaden and Butterfish as a live bait or bucktails and plugs as an artificial alternative. The Albacore are eating smaller tins though. Every point in this area seems to be hiding fish so you shouldn’t have trouble finding a spot to hook some fish.

OFFSHORE – Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin & Tuna, Albacore) could not get any better, especially with the nice weather. They have had a great bite lately for anglers that are mostly chunking using Butterfish or Sardines. The best times to head out on the water are either morning or evening since there has not been much action throughout the day.

BAIT REPORT – Anglers are snagging and dropping Peanut and Adult Menhaden. The run is pretty thick right now.
