North and South Kingstown Fishing Report

INSHORE – During the Winter season the migratory fish have left the area and the variety of fish available in State waters are slim. Some anglers are still heading out on the few party boats still running. Cod, Atlantic is the main species to keep while winter fishing but they are found mostly in Rhode Island saltwater. Inshore anglers can fish for holdover Striper (Bass, Striped) in many of the tidal rivers. We are looking forward to hearing about the Spring run. As we find varying weather conditions from day to day we encourage all anglers to stay safe and warm when fishing. This is a great opportunity to check out some of the current Pro Angler App features along with new additions coming soon. We look forward to bringing you more great Pro Reports when the bite fires back up.

North and South Kingstown Fishing Report

INSHORE – During the Winter season the migratory fish have left the area and the variety of fish available in State waters are slim. Anglers who are determined to head out can fish Providence River up by the Power Plant. This area is typically holding resident Stripers (Bass, Striped) that can be fished all Winter long. Some anglers are heading north to fish freshwater or ice fish when the water is solid. White Perch (Perch, Silver) can also be found in the shallow water. Towards Block Island you may find some Stripers. Tautog are only available for catch and release fishing at this time. Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] are in deeper water. There’s not much to do offshore through the winter aside from the Cod (Cod, Atlantic) bite that happens when the bigger charter boats can get towards Block Island. As we find varying weather conditions from day to day we encourage all anglers to stay safe and warm when fishing. North and South Kingstown Fishing Report

INSHORE – When weather allows anglers to get out we expect to see some Cod (Cod, Atlantic) caught around 99-140 ft. The West as well as South of Block Island and the East side of Block Island will do well. Party Boats Seven B and the Frances Fleet will fish for them. Clams will work well to catch them along with Jigs and Berkley Gulp 6 inch swimming mullet as a teaser on an octopus hook. Gulp and White are always good colors to choose. Recently the morning bite has been most productive. We hope to see this continue into next week.

BAIT REPORT – Squid have slowed down, likely due to the wind. If we see some more ideal conditions they may continue to turn up.

INSHORE – Schoolie Bass (Bass, Striped) are swimming the Providence and Seekonk Rivers. Anglers are catching some keepers. In the Connecticut Rivers, there are keeper Bass and plenty of schoolies. Housatonic and the Thames are great places to fish. There are still some Cod (Cod, Atlantic) and Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) around. Anglers are heading out in the mornings to fish for them. Clams will work well to catch them along with Jigs and Berkley Gulp 6 inch swimming mullet as a teaser on an octopus hook. Sea Bass are taking Gulp as well. You can hook them any way for a good bite. Glow and White are most productive colors. MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM THE PRO ANGLER TEAM! PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal more tips and tricks on how to catch!

INSHORE – We still have some inshore schoolie Bass (Bass, Striped). For bigger fish, head to the CT shoreline. Fish the mouths of the rivers and up the Thames and Housatonic rivers for some decent Bass. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal more tips and tricks on how to catch!

OFFSHORE – Tautog are out deep in 100 ft. There are some inshore but they are mostly small. We are seeing great numbers Cod (Cod, Atlantic) along with a decent Black Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) bite. The Cod are up to 15 lbs. The Black Sea Bass are up to 4 lbs. Pollock and Weakfish are mixed in. Anglers are jigging around what they call the East Grounds. This is in Block Island Sound, about 7 miles West. Fish tight to the bottom for Sea Bass. Diamond Jigs with a Berkley Gulp Teaser is working well. The Berkley Mullet is destroying the fish regardless of what shape it’s in. The day bite is most productive. There are plenty more Sea Bass around the island. Find the structure to find the fish. Working some tapered metal swedish style jigs through the whole water column has been productive as well.

BAIT REPORT – Squidding has been great, especially out of Newport and Jamestown.

INSHORE – Out front there is quite a bit of Bass (Bass, Striped). There plenty of schoolies however things are slowing down in the river as the temperature drops. There are keepers here and there. East Beach and Watch Hill are still holding fish. The Cod (Cod, Atlantic) Fishing around Block Island has been great. Everyone is hooking up to fish. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) and Tautog are biting as well. Winter Flounder (Flounder, Winter) have been caught around Green Point. They can be caught on Sea Worms. You can also cast for them from shore around the airport. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal more tips and tricks on how to catch!

North and South Kingstown Fishing Report

INSHORE – Tautog are closer to the mouth of the bay. Anglers fishing deeper water are doing well also. Stripers (Bass, Striped) are hit or miss off the beaches from here all the way to Charlestown and even south of Westerly. The Breach ways are hit or miss. Bluefish are scattered around Providence. Boat anglers are having to keep an eye on the wind forecasts. As there’s still a good scattering of fish, all you need to catch fish is a break in the weather. Ocean State Tackle is the largest Squid Jig Supplier in the nation with over 144 different types of jigs. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal more tips and tricks on how to catch!

OFFSHORE – Cod (Cod, Atlantic), and Tautog can be found offshore. Both are very weather dependent. 65-90 ft are best for Tautog. Black Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are still around. Cod have been caught off of Block Island. The bite hasn’t been consistent due to weather.

BAIT REPORT – Squid can be caught around Newport. The bite varies depending on the wind. Yo Zuri Squid Jigs are doing well to hook them. The Rhode Island Bridge / Calamari Causeway is doing well. Peconic Point and Jamestown around Fort Wetherill and Fort Getty are productive as well.

INSHORE – There are plenty of schoolie Stripers (Bass, Striped) around mixed with keeper sizes from Newport to Point Judith and to the West towards Charlestown along the breachways and beaches. There is still a great night bite along with a decent morning bite. Eels have been productive along with pencil poppers for bigger fish and Cocahoe Minnows as an alternative. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal more tips and tricks on how to catch!

BAIT REPORT – There is some Bunker (Menhaden) around. They are fairly small.

INSHORE – Small Stripers (Bass, Striped) are on the beach. They are up to 20 inches. Small, White Rubbers such as Storm Shads or White Grubs are doing well. Tautog are biting in 60-70 ft. They are taking Crabs. Albies (Bonito, Little Tunny) are pretty well gone. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal more tips and tricks on how to catch!

INSHORE – Blackfishing has been good. Anglers are having no problem catching limits. Big fish are up to 12 lbs and there are tons of shorts. Crabs or Blackfish jigs are best to hook them. Anglers are catching them all day long. Cod (Cod, Atlantic) and Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are also biting. Cod are slower as there is so much Sea Bass around. The Sea Bass are up to 5 lbs while the Cod are up to 35 lbs. Clams and jigs are working well to hook them. North and South Kingstown Fishing Report

INSHORE – Blackfish (Tautog) are open and doing well. Stripers (Bass, Striped) and Albies (Bonito, Little Tunny) have been disrupted by the weather the past week. There is no particularly good time to head out. It all depends on the weather. Recently the bite has been great at night however the bite should convert into the Fall pattern shortly. The mornings have produced some fish as well. We are wondering if the Albies will hang around following these conditions. The Bass and Bluefish are expected to continue well as there is still tons of bait around. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal more tips and tricks on how to catch!

OFFSHORE – Tuna are scarce with the weather however some anglers have managed to make it out. Anglers are jigging and popping as they cast to Bluefin (Tuna, Bluefin). The bite has been tough with the unfavorable conditions however Stellwagen Bank and The Cape are fishing best if you happen to trailer your boat to MA.

BAIT REPORT – Peanut Bunker and adult Bunker (Menhaden) are running.

Anglers are excited for the season to open back up. Cod will improve as the winter approaches. Typical Blackfishing has set in and we are getting fish up to 8 lbs quite regularly. North and South Kingstown Fishing Report

INSHORE – Small Bass (Bass, Striped) are swimming with a few sizable keepers. They are heading South and are a bit sporadic. Bluefish are coming up on the chunk as well as poppers. There are still some Albies around. The Blackfish (Tautog) bite is on. The incoming tide is best from shore. Green Crabs are a great bait to hook them. When they sense the falling tide they move out. Scup are turning up from both shore and boats. We are about two weeks behind where we were last year so there is still some great fishing to be had. Anglers Note – Asian Crabs are an invasive species. It is not legal to sell them. Please keep this in mind when you head into your local Bait and Tackle Shops!

OFFSHORE – The bite is great for short Cod (Cod, Atlantic) on the nearshore wrecks. Diamond jigs or Clam Bellies will hook them. In a pinch you can use strips of Squid. There are also Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) mixed in. They will take the same baits as the Cod for the most part.

The Bluefish are slowing down which makes getting to the Bass (Bass, Striped) and Albies a little easier. We had some weather roll in so we’re just keeping an eye on what that does to the fishing.
