Magnolia Fishing Report
INSHORE – Saltwater angling has all but wrapped up in Massachusetts. There will still be some small holdover Bass (Bass, Striped) in canals and rivers. Some areas on the west of Cape Cod Bay will see decent amount of Herring throughout the winter. Early winter still provides some Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) opportunities for recreational angling. The state has some really good freshwater fishing in the ponds and lakes. Stay tuned for new in-app Freshwater hot spots to get you through the offseason till everything fires back up in the spring. Have a great winter and stay safe.

INSHORE – The inshore bite has been a bit slow the past few days. Lobstermen have been getting quite a bit of Lobster though. Smelt are running. They can be caught using a Mackerel jig or Sabiki while shining a light on them. You can catch them right off the docks at night. Schoolie Stripers (Bass, Striped) hang around throughout the year. Fish the top of the water column with some plugs. The best times are an hour before and an hour after high tide.
BAIT REPORT – There hasn’t been much on Herring or Mackerel. Herring are likely way offshore. Squid may still be caught. You can shine a light on them off the docks at night.

INSHORE – The Bluefish have moved in and there are tons of them this week! Plenty of Pollock continue to swim the harbor along with Porgies. Mackerel and Herring are scattered inshore and offshore. Some monster Stripers (Bass, Striped) have been hanging around with lots of smaller sizes. Search structures, rock piles, coves and marsh banks. They move in and out of the marshes with the tides. The mouths of the river have been terrific, especially the Annisquam River on both tides. A ton of Flounder (Flounder, Winter) are still spawning in big water throughout the coves. Catch them on the last hour of the incoming and first hour of the outgoing for the best sizes. Whole worms are the best bait for the 15 inch sizes. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!
OFFSHORE – Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) seem to have moved out this week. They are a bit scarce. They have either gone down deep or somewhere else entirely. Anglers will have to travel quite a bit to even mark some. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!
BAIT REPORT – Mackerel and Pogies (Menhaden) are abundant inshore this week. Stocking up on bait shouldn’t be a problem.

INSHORE – Things are a bit quiet this week however we are finding some Stripers (Bass, Striped). They are mostly small sizes so far but at least the bite is decent. With the warmer weather they will generally move a bit off the shore into the deeper water however they never move too far out. For the most part, swimming plugs and live eels are a great bet to hook them if you can get your hands on some. For larger sizes, some anglers will live line Herring, Menhaden and Mackerel, whatever they have to hook them. Anglers can search the back and front of Crane Beach on the incoming tide. At this point, trolling may be a great bet to find a few good fish using swimming plugs, jigs tubes and umbrella rigs. Moving water is the key to hooking them. There have not been many reports from the back side of Gloucester yet this week.

INSHORE – There is some nice action this week. Stripers (Bass, Striped), Pollock and Squid are all showing up. Nice Winter Flounder (Flounder, Winter) are still showing up and they are mixed in with a few Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)]. They are in 20-30 ft taking Squid, Clams and Sea Worms.
OFFSHORE – The Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) have already begun to bite. They are ahead of schedule and anglers hope the bite will stay. They can be found by the Cape. There have been a few sightings of Great White Sharks in the harbor as well.
BAIT REPORT – Squid are in the harbor and bay this week. They are the number one bait this week. Some are right off the piers at night. The light will bring the Squid right to you and you can jig them up!

Haddock have been doing well also. There are surprisingly some juvenile Halibut being picked up as well. There is tons of bait swimming so look for it to find the fish. There has been plenty of wind to kite fish as well.

INSHORE – The Flounder (Flounder, Winter) are coming in as they are spawning. They are strong right now. The bigger the water, the bigger they are. Plenty of large Squid are swimming and are perfect for good sized Stripers (Bass, Striped). Mackerel (Mackerel, Atlantic) are also running this week. Groundfish including Cod (Cod, Atlantic), Haddock, Pollock (Pollock, Atlantic) and Cusk. Anglers only need to drop in one area to stock up. Big Blue Sharks are in now. They can make quite a challenge for anglers.
OFFSHORE – Anglers are finding that the Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) are spawning in the gulf stream however we have not had any reports as of yet. We expect to see them start biting earlier than normal but it has not turned on yet.
BAIT REPORT – Squid and Herring are running. Three Lantern Marine and Fishing now has great gifts and apparel. Stop in and check out the new stock!

INSHORE – Tomo from Tomo’s Tackle in Salem told me that the Flounder (Flounder, Southern) are cooperating behind the Walmart in the Lynnway and off Lynn Heritage State Park. Noel from Bridge Street Sports in Salem said that a long-term customer of the shop has been catching 4 to 5 Flounder per outing from The Fisherman’s Beach in Swampscott including a 21 inch doormat! They’re also catching harbor pollock and schoolies up to 24 inches! Sea Herring as well as Flounder are hitting at Salem Willows and there have been flounder also at the Beverly Pier. Big, breeder Squid have been reported but not caught yet by the Salem Ferry. One customer of the shop was planning on fishing for haddock just outside of Thacher’s Island in Gloucester. This guy said that last year he slammed haddock and their codfish cousins and now with more liberal regulations he’s amped up to capitalize on this area! Skip from Three Lantern Marine in Gloucester is seeing fly-fishermen catching schoolies (Bass, Striped) most every day in the Little River by the Nichols Candy Shop. Flounder are the primary quarry in Gloucester Harbor from the State Fish Pier as well as inside of the Dogbar Jetty. Skip’s convinced that most anywhere you can find access from a pier you will catch flatties. Patrons are enjoying a good Haddock haul out at Jeffreys Ledge. Just in from Surfland in Newburyport is news of schoolies in big numbers off the front beach of Plum Island. The feeling is that these fish will soon head into the Merrimack making for exciting fishing between the Captains Fishing Charters dock and the jetties at the mouth of the Merrimack. Outgoing tide is best and for my mind you cannot beat a three quarter ounce jighead/Queen Cochahoe combination.

OFFSHORE – There has not been much change from last week so far. Haddock and Pollock are both swimming however the limits and sizes are so small that most anglers consider it to be not worth the trip. Tuna, Bluefin are still on the bank. Numbers are down but there are still some big fish and lots of bait out there for the holiday.
BAIT REPORT – Mackerel and Sandeels are running in the offshore. They are thick and working very well as bait.

OFFSHORE – The only action in this area is offshore this week. The Bank, North-West and Southwest corners, are full of Tuna, Bluefin. They are coming up in great sizes so far this week. There are some smaller sizes mixed in however they are simply passing through and don’t seem to be biting the bait. Anglers have been using live Mackerel that are swimming the offshore as bait. This has been extremely productive. The Mackerel are chasing the Sand Eel run and should not be hard to find. All of the fish are swimming under the birds so this is a dead giveaway of where to find them this week. Anglers have been stocking up as the season comes to a close December 31st.

INSHORE – Most of the inshore is pretty much shut down for the year. There are still some Mackerel, Atlantic swimming however this is the only fish reported this week. For anglers that decide to try their luck from the inshore they can always take a look at our Tips feature which provides additional information and suggestions to help improve the catch.
OFFSHORE – There is not a whole lot of action in the offshore this week, although anglers who can get on fish are hitting some huge Tuna, Bluefin. It has been the only fish reported from the offshore however the cold water temperatures are bringing down the big sizes. The Southeast and Southwest corners of the bank are the best spots. Live Mackerel is the best bet in terms of bait to hook these guys. There have also been reports of Pollock, Atlantic and Haddock however the limits are so small most anglers figure it isn’t worth targeting these species. This bite is expected to continue for the next few weeks depending on the weather.
BAIT REPORT – There are still lots of Mackerel swimming and working well for offshore fish.

INSHORE – The action is a lot quieter inshore this week. There are quite a few Mackerel, Atlantic still swimming along with some Smelt that has finally moved in. Most anglers are using little tiny Smelt rigs to catch them, much like a Sabiki setup.
OFFSHORE – The Tuna, Bluefin have continued to bite this week despite the dramatic temperature drop. Anglers are live lining Mackerel and continuing to produce lots of gigantic fish. They are fishing anywhere from 15-25 miles out and finding that very productive. If they can find alternative local bait to jig up that is working as well, however a lot of it is moving out at this point. The fish have been running larger as the season has gone on, so by now the Tuna have been showing up in great sizes.
BAIT REPORT – Mackerel and Smelt are running this week and working well for the offshore fish.

INSHORE – There is not a lot of action inshore this week. Mackerel, Atlantic continue to swim in the shallow water along with some Squid. Anglers are expecting Smelt to show up anytime now as well.
OFFSHORE – Anglers continue to find a solid Tuna, Bluefin bite however they are beginning to migrate through and are coming close to an end. Live lining Mackerel continues to produce fish. The weather has been very unfavorable so most anglers are staying inshore. Most fish have been from Jeffrey’s ledge to the SouthWest corner of the bank. Bottom fishing Pollock (Pollock, Atlantic) continues to do well throughout most of the year. 180-300 ft and even closer to shore has been holding Pollock. Anglers are using small pieces of Mackerel or Herring as bait.
BAIT REPORT – Mackerel and Squid are both running and have not been difficult to catch. Smelt are expected to move in shortly. Fisherman’s Outfitter is a great spot to bring in or ship your equipment for year end service.

INSHORE – There are still lots of good sized Mackerel (Mackerel, Atlantic) swimming in the shallow water. Anglers continue to live line for them. Squid and Skate (Skate, Winter) are also being caught on jigs. Stripers (Bass, Striped) have moved out at this point as the weather has cooled down this week.
OFFSHORE – Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) are still biting pretty well. The live bait is working well as anglers are jigging for them and finding a lot of success. Mackerel is running and can be used live or chunked. This bite is expected to continue through December when weather permits. Bottom fishing activity has slowed down however some people are still bottom fishing for Pollock (Pollock, Atlantic) jigging and live baiting for them as well. Either of these species can be found in roughly 180-300 ft of water.
BAIT REPORT – There are still plenty of small Mackerel running in thick schools. Live baiters are catching them with Sabiki rigs and are working well for offshore bait.

INSHORE – Stripers (Bass, Striped) are still around despite the unseasonably warm temperatures this week. Schools are still showing up and there are a ton of Mackerel that anglers are live lining for or used as bait for the Bass. Both are located in close to shore and in the rivers. The Mackerel, Atlantic are simply everywhere and the Bass are following.
OFFSHORE – The Tuna, Bluefin bite continues offshore and is expected to pick up more over the coming weekend. They are being hooked around the middle bank and Jeffrey’s Ledge by chunking or using Live Mackerel. The bite will stay on until roughly mid-December. There were a few small Tuna, Skipjack but that was very short-lived.
BAIT REPORT – There is an extremely thick Mackerel, Atlantic run on right now as live baiters are catching them with Sabiki rigs. There are some Herring running as well. Both are working well for inshore bait.

Magnolia Fishing Report
OFFSHORE – Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin, Tuna, Bluefin) are still hitting well along the bank. Not a lot has changed offshore in the past few weeks so you can expect similar results. Bottom fishing is closed so we are seeing less boats on the water.
INSHORE – The fish are starting to wind down for the season inshore. Mackerel and Pollock are still biting but there are not yet any reports of Smelt. Bass (Bass, Striped) are beginning to thin out. You can still hook one by casting plugs in the surf. Mackerel patterns and herring patterns are doing well. Bluefish are done so we have not had any reports of these.
BAIT REPORT – There are still tons of Mackerel running right now. You should have no trouble catching these.
OF NOTE – Don’t forget to bring your reels in for service at the end of the season before the salt begins to affect their performance.

Magnolia Fishing Report
OFFSHORE – If you can catch a break in the weather, there are a lot of Tuna offshore and you don’t have to go far out to find them. Mid-morning chunking is your best bet as you can easily find live bait inshore. Stellwagen Bank continues to produce great Tuna opportunities if you can get out.
INSHORE – Striped Bass have been chasing Peanut Bunker and Silver Sides along the beaches. Where the birds are, the fish are. Let the birds do the work for you. Pencil Poppers and Bucktails are your best artificial bait with a strong braided line. Remember to use some sort of leader material that’ll give you a little shock absorption.
BAIT REPORT – Both Mackerel and Peanut Bunker are running, providing ample bait options for anglers.

Magnolia Fishing Report
OFFSHORE – Giant Bluefin Tuna are out in the Gulf of Maine and Cape Cod Bay. Head out towards the Canyons to find Yellowfin, specifically towards Jeffery’s Ledge, Snow Wagon Bank, and Cape Cod Bay. Live baiting Herring or Mackerel seems to work the best for the bigger fish, trolling won’t give the same results. Pollock is the only fish to bottom fish for right now, at about 150-300 ft. Clams are working the best right now for Pollock. We’re anticipating some really great fall Tuna opportunities.
INSHORE – There’s been some good Striped Bass and Bluefish being caught off the rocks close to shore. Poppers are working great, especially the bigger size range, 6 in.
BAIT REPORT – There’s some different bait around. Look to where they’re getting busted by game fish and try to net them. Toss them right back out because you the fish want them.
