La Jolla Fishing Report

INSHORE – Local morning trips are doing well for Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Yellowtail & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Widow) and the numbers are steady. Afternoon trips are a bit tougher for good numbers. Squid is generally your best bet on a metal jig. Send it down to rocky bottom to find them. Sculpin (Scorpionfish, California) are also turning up on shallower, rocky bottom. Sand Bass (Bass, Barred Sand) are scattered but can be caught on live Sardine or Anchovy.

OFFSHORE – We continue to see great catches from offshore boats into this week. Overnight trips are taking in good numbers of Bluefin (Tuna, Bluefin) along with limits of Yellowtail as well. Iron jigs suspended above bottom are a good choice. Three quarter day trips are catching the same fish.

INSHORE – Heading farther offshore this week on a three quarter day trip we are seeing great numbers of both Bluefin (Tuna, Bluefin) and Yellowtail. Fish up to 100 pounds have been sighted so be prepared for a big catch. Flat Fall, coltsniper jigs and fluorocarbon line is your best setup. Over the next few days anglers will be targeting them on overnight trips. The half day trips continue to hook Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Yellowtail & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Widow) over structured bottoms. The afternoon bite has been more productive and the number of Reds is steadily increasing.

La Jolla Fishing Report

INSHORE – There are still some decent Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Starry) can still be found on nearshore structures this week. Sending Squid to the bottom is usually your best bet to hook them. Sculpin (Scorpionfish, California) can be found in the same areas with shallower water. The evening trips have been the most productive so far with many anglers also loading up on Bass (Bass, Calico) using Sardine or Anchovy.

OFFSHORE – For offshore trips this week, it has been no surprise that Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Yellowtail & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Widow) have been the main target for offshore anglers heading to the Coronados. The numbers are decent and even a few Lingcod have made an appearance. Squid on the bottom is always the key on a three quarter day trip. Bonito (Bonito, Pacific) are just beginning to show up on irons.

La Jolla Fishing Report

INSHORE – There is a nice variety for inshore and surf anglers this week. The morning bite has produced Bass (Bass, Calico & Bass, Barred Sand & Bass, Spotted Sand) throughout warmer areas of water with plenty of kelp for them to hide. Sardine or Anchovy are great baits to throw, and alternatively a swimbait is generally an artificial preference. In the shallower, rocky areas there have also been a good number of Sculpin (Scorpionfish, California) turning up as well.

OFFSHORE – As Spring quickly approaches we are seeing more and more fish turn up. Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Yellowtail & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Widow) are steadily increasing into this week. Limits have been hit and sizes are decent. Squid on a metal jig sent right down to rocky bottom is your best bet on a day trip. Not many Lingcod have been brought in just yet however we expect this to fire up a little closer to the beginning of Spring. Both morning and afternoon trips are totalling decent numbers of fish. A handful of Yellowtail are also being brought in using Iron jigs and Mackerel.

INSHORE – Closer inside the evening trips have been hooking Perch (Surfperch, Barred) in the sandy, shallow areas. They generally prefer Bloodworms, Lugworms or Gulp worms. Sculpin (Scorpionfish, California) are also being caught on rocky bottoms. Bass (Bass, Calico) have been a bit scattered however if you are putting time in you will find a few taking Anchovy, Sardines or Swimbaits in kelpy areas.

OFFSHORE – This week the day and a half trips to Colonet have been quite productive. We are seeing steady catches of Yellowtail along with limits of Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Yellowtail & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Widow) turning up. Deep dropping to the bottom using cut Squid on a metal jig is your best bet over rocky bottomed areas. The Yellowtail prefer iron jigs suspended above the bottom.

OFFSHORE – Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Yellowtail & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Widow) are open and on fire this week! The morning trip saw steady numbers along with a few Lingcod, Sculpin (Scorpionfish, California) and Sand Bass (Bass, Spotted Sand). Anglers are fishing structure using weighted jigs tipped with cut Squid. The evening trips are producing equally good numbers of Rockfish, Sculpin and even a few Calicos (Bass, Calico), Sheepshead and Sea Bass, White. They are also holding up on structure, but generally in a bit shallower water. Prior to Rockfish opener anglers headed out to Colonet on a day and a half trip for outstanding numbers of Yellowtail and Bonito (Bonito, Pacific). The Yellowtail can generally be caught on iron jigs. We hope to see this bite continue and improve as the season progresses.

La Jolla Fishing Report

INSHORE – As you may have guessed, whether this week has kept anglers off the water. Dangerous conditions have shut down the coastline for miles so there hasn’t been a lot to report. Prior to these conditions Anglers were staying mostly inshore targeting Bass (Bass, Calico) and Sculpin (Scorpionfish, California). The Bass were hanging out in the kelpy areas as usual. There were some Sand Bass (Bass, Spotted Sand) to be caught on the flats as well. Bonito (Bonito, Pacific) and Halibut (Halibut, California) have been scattered. Along the shore there were plenty of Sanddab (Sanddab, Pacific).

OFFSHORE – Prior to the recent weather anglers were heading towards the Coronado Islands to fish Lingcod, Yellowtail , Sheepshead along with a variety of Rockfish (Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Brown). We hope to see this continue when the conditions are more favorable.

INSHORE – Sand Bass and Sculpin (Scorpionfish, California) are the main targets until the Rockfish open back up. Search for Sculpin in roughly 60 ft of water. The bay fishing has been decent when you can get out there. Halibut (Halibut, California) and Sand Bass (Bass, Spotted Sand) are swimming and biting well. 3-4 inch swimbaits with a half ounce leadhead is the key to hooking them. When the water is murky use a brighter color and when the water is clear darker colors are preferred.

INSHORE – From the surf anglers are catching a few legal Halibut (Halibut, California). Some are keepers. Croaker and Corbina have also been hooked. Sand Perch (Surfperch, Sand) are slow but when you can find them they are taking Squid or Gulp Sandworms. The series of storms and fog has made shore fishing difficult for anglers this week.

OFFSHORE – Yellowtail are biting off the kelp around La Jolla and Point Loma early in the morning. Surface Irons under birds is your best setup. South out of San Diego Bay there are tons of birds giving their location away. After this anglers are targeting Rockfish or Sand Bass (Bass, Spotted Sand). Bay Bass (Bass, Barred Sand) are slow. Anglers are hooking Yellowtail off Collinette on Yoyo irons. They are up to 30 lbs. Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper) are taking them as well.

La Jolla Fishing Report

INSHORE – Even though we have some weather coming through the Southern Cali area this coming week that does not mean you shouldn’t head out fishing. San Diego anglers just had their open Bay Bass Tournament on San Diego Bay. It was a tough bite but there were still some fish to be had. Scampi Tails, Single Shrimp Tails and Hook Up Bait are working extremely well. The Manufacturer came in second with 138 contestants. Spotted Bay Bass (Bass, Spotted Sand) to Sand Bass (Bass, Barred Sand) and also a fairly decent Halibut (Halibut, Pacific) bite turned up. Halibut are on the flats in 35 ft with the Clam Beds. They are also in the San Diego Bay. On the outside there is a good Sand Bass Bite. Boats are going out on the half days and hitting them well. The middle of the week trips out of H&M Landing has extended trips. There are a variety of other fish in the immediate inshore area. Calico Bass (Bass, Calico) have not been bad but the water is pretty cool this week. Swim baits or anything in an Amber, Gold or Rootbeer in 4-5 inch will work well.

OFFSHORE – If you are are more adventurous, the 1.5-2.5 day trips are heading down the coast off of Baja fishing towards Collenette. The bite for Yellowtail has been terrific. We are seeing limits of Yellowtail by Yoyoing Irons from 120-200 ft. You can use a dropper rig or plastics if you get down that far. There are some surface fish to be had but most are coming out of deeper water. After you load up on Yellowtail you’ll still have great Rockfishing that you can limit on. Lingcod are also exceptional. They are all within a half day range of San Diego. Some boats get out a bit quicker so they can go farther south fishing between Collenette and San Martin to fish water that no one else is fishing. Dropper loops and yoyoing heavier jigs is hooking them here too.

INSHORE – This week we are seeing anglers spending more time on the water. The day and a half trips are producing good numbers of quality Yellowtail as well as limits of Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Yellowtail & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Olive). Dropper loops with heavy Yo-yo jigs were working best. Tip with Anchovy or Squid to lure them in. The coast of Baja and Punta Colonet is producing well this week.

INSHORE – Everyone is gearing up for the San Diego Anglers Bay Bass tournament in the bay. From the shoreline there is all kinds of great places to fish. Shelter Island Pier is a fantastic start and you don’t need a fishing license in this area. As you move around the bay there is some great fishing by the Bally High Restaurant in the basin. Harbor Island has been producing some great fishing as Sand Bass (Bass, Spotted Sand) are moving in the bay and around the island. Farther in around Seaport Village and Embarcadero we are seeing Spotted Bay Bass (Sand Bass) and small Calicos (Bass, Calico). Off the Coronado Ferry Landing there is an area of good Leopard Sharks (Shark, Leopard) and Bat Rays (Ray, Bat). They can be caught easily on chunked Bonito (Bonito, Pacific) or Mackerel (Mackerel, Pacific). Spotted Bay Bass in the back of the bay around Coronado Bridge are good but small. There hasn’t been many keepers. Boat anglers are heading to the mouth of San Diego Bay for Sand Bass and Sculpin. Sculpin (Scorpionfish, California) are on the West side of the channel. Early in the morning at twilight and sunrise you can find Calicos and Sand Bass on the Zuniga Jetty. As the sun rises the fishing goes away. Head to the Shelter Island Launch area before January 22 as it will close to personal watercrafts for improvements later in the month. Mission Bay will be a great place to launch after this.

INSHORE – Closer in the Sand Bass (Bass, Barred Sand) and Calicos (Bass, Calico) have been caught in a bit deeper water. Anchovy or Sardines are your best bet to hook them. Alternatively, Swimbaits are productive. Search for the fish in kelp areas with soft bottom. We expect this to forecast into the holiday week. The Pro Angler Team wishes you a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. We look forward to bringing you more great reports in 2017!

OFFSHORE – This week on the half day afternoon trip we are seeing a bit of a scattered Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue) bite. They continue to love live bait such as Squid Strips on a jig. Send this setup right down to the bottom on structure for the best bite. A handful of Sheepshead (Sheepshead, California) are also turning up along with Yellowtail on the bottom.

INSHORE – Recently, Halibut (Halibut, Pacific) are the main target. Anglers are fishing them from the beach. They are finally legal size. The MPA that is open to shore fishing is the best places to be. Black’s Beach to Ponto Beach in Carlsbad has been producing lots of legal fish. Squid is the best producing bait while Kastmasters and Crocodiles are great artificials. An hour and a half on either side of the high tide is the best time to fish.

OFFSHORE – Bluefin (Tuna, Bluefin) are still biting at Tanner Bank. The charters are taking mostly overnight trips when at all possible. Live Squid is best to hook them. Glow in the dark egg sinkers right on top of the hook will help. Rig 150 lb line on a 5/O to 8/O hook. Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue) are also turning up on three quarter and half day trips. INSHORE – Trout are stocked in the Freshwater lakes this week if you are looking for something a bit different. You can fish them right from the shore. The saltwater beaches are holding Surfperch (Surfperch, Barred) and Halibut (Halibut, Pacific) around imperial as well as up off Leucadia and Black’s beach. There is good fishing offshore but not a lot of anglers going. Private boaters are whacking Yellowfin and Bluefin (Tuna, Yellowfin & Tuna, Blackfin). OFFSHORE – The Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin) bite is insane this week! Numbers are outstanding. Anglers can troll feathers, plugs or skirted trolling lures to hit them. Casting Poppers into them is productive as well. Metal jigs are best when fishing deep. There are some Bluefin (Tuna, Bluefin) mixed in. They are taking the same bait. A bit closer in the Yellowtail are also biting very well. If you can get your hands on Mackerel or Sardine you are in for a good bite. Rockfish ((Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Vermillion) are continuing a decent bite. They will go after Strips of Squid on a bucktail. Make sure you get your hook right down to the bottom to hit them.

INSHORE – The Calico (Bass, Calico) bite is improving into this week. There are still some shorts being caught however there are a good number of keepers as well. Search the kelp and grassy flats to find them. As the water begins to cool down we expect to see a more prominent bite soon. A few Sand Bass (Bass, Spotted Sand) can be found in the same areas. They are both taking live Anchovy or Sardine. Swim baits are a great artificial alternative.

OFFSHORE – The Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin) have been turning up in outstanding numbers this week. There are also a ton of Bluefin (Tuna, Bluefin) mixed in with them. The sizes are great so far. Anglers can troll for them using feathers or plugs. Look for debris or birds to find them. Rockfish (Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Vermillion) have also been producing well. We are seeing great numbers. Drop your metal jig right to the bottom to hook them. Search for structure and tip your hook with Squid for the best bite. Lingcod are scarce and Bocaccio are hit or miss. A few Yellowtail have also shown up a bit closer in however they are scattered. Iron jigs are best to hook them.

INSHORE – Closer to shore the Bonito (Bonito, Pacific) are swimming. They’re not too picky and will take a variety of setups. Generally flashy lures will attract them will, especially if you are chumming them up. Bass (Bass, Calico) have also been caught in kelp areas and deeper pockets. Hook them with swim baits or Anchovy.

OFFSHORE – This week The Bluefin Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) are turning up in great numbers. We are also seeing a few Yellowfin (Tuna, Yellowfin) turn up. Trolling with feathers and plugs will do well to hook them. Closer in the Rockfish (Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Vermillion) bite has been steady. Hit the bottom with with metal jigs tipped with Squid for the best sizes. Yellowtail are hit and miss. Iron jigs will work better for them.

INSHORE – Calico Bass (Bass, Calico) are consistent into this week. Steady numbers have been brought in. Search for them using swim baits or Anchovy. Sheepshead are holding up on structure. They are hit or miss however if you are targeting them and put some time in you will find them.

OFFSHORE – The Rockfish (Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Brown) bite has been outstanding the past week. We are seeing great numbers so far in all sizes. A few Lingcod are mixed in. Get your metal jigs right down to the bottom, and tip with Squid for the best bite. Search the deep, rocky bottom areas. The Yellowtail are staying consistent into this week. Steady numbers are turning up. Iron jigs will be the best bet to hook them. Farther out the Yellowfin Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin) are being caught in great numbers, triple digits even. There are some Bluefin (Tuna, Bluefin) mixed in. They are not as plentiful however they are there if you put some time in. The nearshore is holding good numbers of Barracuda (Barracuda, California).

INSHORE – Closer to shore the Bonito (Bonito, Pacific) are all over the structured bottom. They are running thick this week so make sure you bring along your shiny plugs to catch them on the troll. If you are fishing from piers live bait such as Anchovy or Sardine will work wonders. Closer structure such as bridges and rock piles are holding some nice Sheepshead that have been hooked this week. We are seeing consistently steady numbers for them. If you can get your hands on Shrimp or Crab they will love this. Of course, Sculpin (Scorpionfish, California) can be caught right from shore.

OFFSHORE – The deep water is the place to be this week. The Yellowtail are out of control and the numbers are unreal. Jig them up using live Mackerel if you can get your hands on it. Squid makes a great bait as well. The Rockfish (Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper) are also producing some outstanding numbers so far. Keep fishing the structures using heavy lures such as metal jigs to get right down to the bottom. Tip your hook with some Squid for a great bite. The Lingcod bite has been a bit slow however the Dorado have remained consistent in steady numbers. Farther out we have found amazing numbers of Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin) and a few Bluefin (Tuna, Bluefin) mixed in. The sizes are varied so far. You shouldn’t have any trouble catching a few on the troll using plugs or skirted lures as they seem to be just about everywhere.

INSHORE – There is a lot of action in shore this week. The Calicos (Bass, Calico) are turning up in outstanding numbers. They are hiding in the weeds and kelp. There are actually more keeper sized fish than small ones. Live bait including Sardines and Anchovy will work well to hook them. Bonito (Bonito, Pacific) are also swimming the inshore. They are decent this week. Sheepshead (Sheepshead, California) are holding up on structure. Closer to shore the Sand Bass (Bass, Spotted Sand) can be found over soft bottom.

OFFSHORE – The bite is on this week! We are seeing fantastic numbers of Yellowtail. Dorado have also been caught this week in good numbers. Farther out the Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin) bite has also been productive. There have been a few Bluefin Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) brought in as well. On the closer reefs the Barracuda (Barracuda, California) are holding up and chasing smaller fish. The Rockfish (Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper) are slowing down a bit. There has also been a few catches of Lingcod.

INSHORE – The Calico Bass (Bass, Calico) bite is on fire!! There are tons of undersized fish along with way more keepers. Live Sardines and Anchovy will be the best bait to throw. If you are leaning towards artificials try using Krocodile Spoons. Soft plastics will work as well. Chum them up in the kelp lines to find them. The same areas are holding a few scattered catches of Sand Bass (Bass, Barred Sand) mixed in. There are a few Bonito (Bonito, Pacific) swimming the deeper water this week. Barracuda (Barracuda, California) are swimming the reefs along with a few White Sea Bass (Sea Bass, White). Sheepshead have been holding up on structure. They love live bait including Shrimp or Crabs. Of course, Sculpin (Scorpionfish, California) are always a never fail from shore.

OFFSHORE – The offshore bite has been steady this week. Great numbers of Yellowtail have been brought in so far. Search the islands and structured areas to find them. Kelp paddies will also be holding good sizes. Iron jigs will be a great method of hooking them as the weight drops the lure right to the bottom. If you are inclined to use live bait then a Mackerel will be your best choice. The Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin) bite has steadily increased into this week. The sizes and numbers are fantastic. If there is enough wind you can definitely kite fish for them, however the chunk bite has been productive as well. Dorado are finally turning on this week. Catch them on the troll using skirted lures or a popper. Sardines and Mackerel are also a good choice. Let’s not forget about the Rockfish (Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Black). As usual, metal jigs will get down to the bottom to hook them. Anchovy or Sardine are the best live bait to throw.

INSHORE – Mission Bay and San Diego Bay is hot for shore anglers as well as inshore including Bass (Bass, Kelp), Sculpin (Scorpionfish, California), Corbina and a good assortment of Bat Rays (Ray, Bat) and Leopard Sharks (Shark, Leopard) that are always a ton of fun to catch. If you are targeting the Rays or Sharks a Mackerel head works very well. Some of the fish in San Diego bay are over 100 lbs. The Bass (Bass, Kelp) are coming right off the shore in the kelp. The kelp is a bit off in quantity so you can get to the bottom and fish structures. Calicos (Bass, Calico) have been great using plastic swim baits in Halloween colors. Off of Imperial Beach on the hard bottom the fishing is great from 70-90 ft of water. Sand Bass (Bass, Spotted Sand), Calico, Johnny Bass (Rockfish, Olive) and Vermillions (Rockfish, Vermillion) are all there. At the opening of San Diego bay at the Whistler Buoy there has been a great selection of fish. Sheepshead (Sheepshead, California) and Sand Bass are on the bottom while Bonito (Bonito, Pacific), Barracuda (Barracuda, California) and some Yellowtail are above. The half day boats are targeting bottom fish so far. The three quarter day boats are heading to Mexican waters for Yellowtail and bottom fish.

OFFSHORE – If you have a big enough boat to target the Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) you need to stay in front of breaking fish and use poppers, flat falls or slow troll big Mackerel and Sardines. Overnight and two day trips are finding great numbers of Yellowfin Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin). They almost have limits. There are also tons of Yellowtail. They are up to 25 lbs while the Yellowfin are up to 230.

INSHORE – This week the Calico Bass (Bass, Calico) are everywhere. There are far more keeper sizes than released, however the numbers are great in both categories. Swimbaits are working well to hook them around the grassy areas. The Sand Bass (Bass, Spotted Sand) are scattered this week. If you put some time in you may find a few. There have been surprisingly high numbers of Barracuda (Barracuda, California) swimming this week. As usual there are always Sculpin (Scorpionfish, California) to find if all else fails. Some anglers are heading to the nearshore for Bonito (Bonito, Pacific). Anglers can troll plugs to find them.

OFFSHORE – The numbers are fantastic out of San Diego this week. The Yellowtail bite has lit up! Keep rocking the iron jigs to catch them. Alternatively a nice Mackerel will attract some good sizes. We have also finally had some reports of Dorado coming in this week. They are still scattered and haven’t quite fired up but they have arrived! The Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Brown) remains consistent into this week. Drop your metal jig straight down to the bottom to find them. Farther out, the Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin & Tuna, Bluefin) have also made an appearance. Anglers are trolling feathers and plugs to find them. They are much farther out and you’ll have to plan a day or two trip to catch them. A few White Sea Bass (Sea Bass, White) and Lingcod have been caught however the numbers are low this week.

INSHORE – Closer to shore the Calico Bass (Bass, Calico) bite has gone nuts! We are seeing great numbers coming out of the grassy areas. Plenty were released as well. Try chumming small anchovies to get them in the mood. You can either toss a swimbait or if you prefer live bait, you can consider a live Anchovy to hook them. A few Sheepshead have turned up in the structured areas and rock piles. Sand Bass (Bass, Spotted Sand) have been a bit scattered but they seem to be interested in the same techniques as the Calicos. Sculpin (Scorpionfish, California) have become a scarce bite this week. Bonito (Bonito, Pacific) have made it to the nearshore. The numbers are decent and the sizes are varied. Shiny spoons or live Anchovies will do the trick. The Halibut (Halibut, Pacific) will take soft plastics and jerkbaits.

OFFSHORE – We are finding a hot bite in the offshore this week. The Yellowtail are on fire and have been great sizes so far. Iron jigs are a popular method of catching them. If you are using live bait, a Mackerel or Squid will work well. You have to search for them as they can be found anywhere from surface to deep water. Farther out anglers have found Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin & Tuna, Bluefin). A lot of anglers prefer to hook them on the troll using feather, plugs or skirted lures. Blue, white and purple are often productive colors. If you are using live, anchovies and sardines are a great choice. Anglers can also consider fishing a kite if the weather allows. A handful of Dorado were brought in this week as well. The Lingcod and Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Brown) have slowed down a bit but still continue to bite.

There are some White Sea Bass (Sea Bass, White) mixed in with them. The Calico Bass (Bass, Calico) continue to turn up throughout the kelp areas in great numbers and can also be found around the jetties. Alternatively, Sand Bass (Bass, Spotted Sand) are scattered all over the flats this week. They have been the main inshore bite along with some Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Brown) on the half day trip. A few Ling (Lingcod) have turned up however the bite has not quite heated up.

OFFSHORE – Moving towards a three quarter day trip anglers are seeing Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish Greenspotted & Rockfish, Copper) being caught this week. There are still some Yellowtail moving towards the offshore water however they are a bit scattered. There have been reports of a few Bluefin Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) as well as a few Sharks (Shark, Shortfin Mako). Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) in the afternoon. Everyone is worn out and resting for tomorrow’s fishing , great weather also. Thursday we caught a few Tuna early on and then topped off our Yellowtail quota and then had some nice drifts on Grouper (Grouper, Gag) the rest of the day. Good grade fish for all today, and great weather makes for another excellent day on the Indy. We are going to start the long trek up and try some spots on the way up. OFFSHORE – Wednesday was another Stellar Day! Good evening everyone, things are really good out here on the high seas. We experienced excellent fishing for jumbo Yellowtail and made a drift for 43 of those 35 to 60 lb. Yellowfin Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin). Just great action all day long under sunny warm conditions. Thursday we spent the morning in the Tuna zone with windy choppy conditions and just a little sign of biting fish. A sample 6 fish is all we caught for half a day’s effort. Later on we caught the remaining yellows for the few guys lacking, and a few Grouper (Grouper, Gag) to end the day on. Upward we now go and make a few stops along the way to wet a line. The weather has backed off a little and it’s decent going.

INSHORE – Yellowtail continue to turn up around the inshore. They are weighing in around 10 lbs so far. They can be found throughout the ribbon kelp. Anglers are trolling rapalas with surface irons and Sardines to hook them. When you hit a school they will be right at the surface, just watch out for the sealions. There are some nice sizes coming in from the rock piles as well. Fish under the birds to find them.

OFFSHORE – Things are getting really hot offshore this week. The Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) are biting like crazy and the sizes are huge. We are seeing weights up to 100 lbs! Anglers do not even need to head too far out to find them. They are taking live bait so far. Using a surface iron will help you feel when it bounces off their backs. Look for the boiling and frothing, white foam to indicate schools. Heading to the 60 mile bank we are seeing smaller fish around 30 lbs. Sardines are hooking them best. Colt snipers and flat falls are great alternatives. As long as the weather is good you will be catching fish.

INSHORE – In Southern California we are seeing Spotted Bay Bass (Bass, Spotted Sand) in the deeper channels of the Mission Bay. The bite has been great. There have also been some Halibut (Halibut, Pacific) reported from the same area. They have not been as consistent as the Bass however anglers targeting them should be able to find a few. In San Diego Bay there is a nice variety of fish running this week. You have your typical Sand Bass (Bass, Barred Sand) and Spotted Bay Bass as well as Calicos (Bass, Calico) while anglers are also finding some Corbina coming in. The fishermen are getting along sandy shorelines around the Coronado area. They are using jerk baits to catch Halibut and Cobina in this area. When the Grunion (Grunion, California) are in anglers will find a lot of fish you normally can’t find on surface action. If you are using jerk baits and similar other topwaters you’ll find fish. The early morning or late evening bite has been best for these fish species so far. Don’t forget to catch and release to help keep our fisheries active. There have also been reports of a few Bonefish caught in the South bay on Ghost Shrimp and regular Shrimp. Uncooked Shrimp on a hook suspended on a bobber has been productive on the muddy flats. Towards the mouth of the bay, Halibut are becoming more prominent this week. Since they seem to have been overlooked during the Yellowtail bite they are quite thick. Nice large Sardines or plastics along sandy flats are the best method to hook them. Look for pockets and they will be hiding in there from the jetties to the Hotel Del Coronado. Calicos are coming up from the kelp beds this week. The sizes are pretty good although the bite is a bit scattered so far. One of the best areas to search is right off Point Loma where the pipeline comes for the sewage plant. The deeper water around 55 – 65 ft is holding the best bite. Things are beginning to heat up just in time for a Spring pattern! Day at the Docks is coming up on April 17th! Enjoy a nice day on the water for both new anglers to experienced anglers. Food, rides, demos and more make this event a great time for everyone!

OFFSHORE – There are still a lot of boats going down towards Colnett as there is great Yellowtail fishing and great bottom fishing throughout the area. The Bluefin Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) are scattered so far this year. They are just beginning to turn up down on the 43 and the 60 mile ridge. Now more boats are heading to this area. There are not a lot of fish just yet however the sizes are great so far. The half day trips are popping some big 40-50 lb fish which is extraordinary for the trip. There are large fish out there and anglers must be prepared for them with the proper gear setups. Sardines are working well to bring them in. Lots of fish are being caught on the fly line without weights. Irons including the new Cool Tuna Z Bar are working well. To the South the Mint color is great however Blue/White is always productive. We are looking to see quite a bit of wind this weekend so make sure you check the weather before you head out. There are fish out there and they are big, so if you put some time in you’ll be reeling in some great catches.

INSHORE – Perch (Surfperch, Barred & Surfperch, Redtail) continue to turn up throughout the inshore however they are beginning to slow down a bit. Sculpin can also be found in this area however they are becoming scattered as well. A few catches of Sheepshead and Halibut (Halibut, Pacific) have turned up and we hope this is the beginning of a nice Spring bite.

OFFSHORE – Things are beginning to heat up in this area as of late. Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Starry) are on fire this week and anglers are having no trouble hitting them. The Yellowtail are beginning to pick up and they are becoming as numbers are up. Lingcod are slow however if you put some time in you will find some great fish.

A handful of Halfmoon have been caught and we are also seeing Surfperch (Surfperch, Rubberlip), Bass (Bass, Calico) and a small catch of Bass, Spotted Sand.

OFFSHORE – Rockfish are hot this week and although they are closed in some California areas they can still be caught and released. The Surfperch, Barred continue to show up so far. We are also seeing some Yellowtail show up in the offshore as well. Anglers are excited to see the beginning of a Spring bite.

La Jolla Fishing Report

INSHORE – With the swell and the surges happening in this area as of late there aren’t a lot of anglers heading out. Once conditions relax we expect to see a continued Perch (Surfperch, Barred) bite from the coastline. Soft plastics and gulp have been the best artificials to hook them with. Bass, Spotted Sand and Bass, Barred Sand should still be producing from the bay area as well. There are new Shimano rods that are only available here! Stop in and check them out.

OFFSHORE – It has been extremely difficult for anglers to head outside this week with the weather conditions. Previous to this we were seeing Tuna, Bluefin and Tuna, Yellowfin. The Sea Bass, White bite was also productive along with various Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Bocaccio & Rockfish, Copper & Lingcod). We expect to see this continue once conditions clear up.

La Jolla Fishing Report

INSHORE – There is a good Perch (Surfperch, Barred) bite from the coastline and the sizes are great. Soft plastics and gulp are the best artificials to hook them. The bays have been great for Bass, Spotted Sand, and Bass, Barred Sand. There have been been some Shark, Leopard showing up as well. The slack tide and the incoming tide are always the best time to fish. There are new Shimano rods that are only available here! Stop in and check them out.

OFFSHORE – There are some Bluefin (Tuna, Bluefin) biting this week. The Yellowfin (Tuna, Yellowfin) are hot a bit farther out. Along the bottom there are some Bass (Sea Bass, White) so 100-150ft of water is great place to start! In 300ft there are some Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Bocaccio & Rockfish, Copper & Lingcod) as well. The Spring bite is beginning to set in.

There has also been a single catch of Sheepshead inshore as well.

OFFSHORE – Things have been hot in this area as of late. Anglers are stocking up on Rockfish (Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Vermillion). There have also been Lingcod caught in the same water. There have been a solid number of Yellowtail turning up a bit closer in.

La Jolla Fishing Report

INSHORE – This week anglers are searching the kelp beds for the return of the Bass (Bass, Calico & Bass, Spotted Sand). The sizes are small at this point however the morning bite is producing the most activity and best lengths. There are also some Sculpin hanging around the rocky bottom areas. They are not the target of most anglers now that the Bass are back.

OFFSHORE – This week we are seeing a decent bag of Yellowtail swimming so far. On a three quarter day trip our anglers are catching around 20. The bite is has not been on fire however they are out there if you are putting your time in. The sizes have been varied. We are also seeing some Rockfish (Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Vermillion) turn up as well from the bottom.

La Jolla Fishing Report

INSHORE – The inshore is beginning to see a Spring pattern make it’s way back in. There are reports of Bass, Calico and Bass, Spotted Sand returning. Their sizes are nothing spectacular yet however it is still early. Live bait is generally a great bet to hook them due to the scent and movement. Similar artificials will be productive. Anglers can find them throughout the kelp beds this week. Sculpin are also hanging around and though they are not generally a target for most anglers due to their venomous nature, they are fun to catch mixed in with the Bass.

OFFSHORE – Fishing has been quite active in this area as of late. On day and a half trips we are seeing plenty of Yellowtail and tons of Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Black). There have also been reports of decent Lingcod, some Bonito (Bonito, Pacific) and a handful of Barracuda, California. Most anglers are targeting the Rockfish at this point although all the fish have a fairly consistent bite.

La Jolla Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – The Yellowtail bite has been the main focus for most anglers this week. The sizes have been great so far and the numbers are over 150 on a day and a half trip. We are also seeing tons of Rockfish and Lingcod that are currently catch and release only. The Yellowtail in this area are more seasonal which makes them a little more picky and can be hesitant to bite. Fly lining is a great way to reel in a big size. Most anglers will use live bait on a Carolina rig with little to no sinker. Small hooks and a light line is all that is required. If the fish are deeper of course a heavier yo-yo iron is good. Look for the birds as they are usually a give away the location of the fish. This is merely the start of the season and we expect it to heat up in the coming months.

La Jolla Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Yellowtail bite has trailed into this week however is not as consistent as last. Some days it is difficult to find the fish whereas others angler are finding 25 or more. The Bonito, Pacific bite has also dropped off this week and is spotty so far at best. The Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Starry) continue to show up and similar to the Yellowtail are hit and miss. Most fish are being caught on a three quarter to day and a half trip and the sizes are fair at this point.

OFFSHORE – Things have been shaping up in this area as of late. The numbers are back up. Anglers are finding great numbers of Yellowtail and continuously hitting their limits of Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Greenspotted). There have also been some consistent numbers of Lingcod as well as a few Barracuda, California, too. These were all caught on 1.5 day trips as the weather has been perfect the past few days.

La Jolla Fishing Report

INSHORE – There are no reports of Bonito, Pacific yet however have seen a few different fish come in. Bass (Bass, Calico & Bass, Barred Sand) are turning up throughout the nearshore. The sizes are good and the bite is consistent for anglers targeting them. We have also had a single report of Surfperch, Rubberlip and Surfperch, Sand come in as well. Anglers are preferring to use live bait so far this week.

OFFSHORE – The bite has been great offshore as of late. There are tons of Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Greenspotted) along the bottom this week. Don’t forget they are only available for catch and release. They are mixed in with a good number of Sculpin, Lobster and a spotty bite of Lingcod. Dragging bait along the bottom on the drift is usually a great method of hooking a good size. Squid, Mackerel and Herring are typically preferred baits. They are all on day and a half trips from shore. The Yellowtail bite has been steady but not hot so far. Anglers should have no problem hooking a few fish in the deep water this week.

La Jolla Fishing Report

INSHORE – Bonito, Pacific continue to do well this week near to the surface around edges. Surfperch, Barred are also turning up throughout the nearshore this week. They’re not on fire but anglers should not have much trouble finding if they are the target. Bass (Bass, Barred Sand & Bass, Spotted Sand) have been caught on the bottom so far along with some Sculpin. There are plenty of fish to catch from the inshore this week. There are no signs of Bass, Calico so far but we do not expect that they have left.

OFFSHORE – There are tons of various Rock Cod (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Greenspotted) swimming along the bottom on reefs and structure. They are turning up in great numbers as most anglers are hitting their limits on a day to day and a half trip. We are also seeing consistent limits of Yellowtail being caught as well up to 25 lbs. Of course, there are still Lingcod in the same areas too however they are not quite as hot this week. There are no signs of Sea Bass, White so far.

La Jolla Fishing Report

INSHORE – Rockfish (Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Vermillion & Lingcod continue to dominate the local catch as is usual for this time of year. The past two weather systems seem to have quieted the bite for the pelagic species, though a few Bonito, Pacific are being caught off the kelp edges. With roughish seas, it’s hard for boats to get out there and look, so most are finding a good spot to anchor up on a spot and fish the bottom for Reds, Vermillion, Lingcod and Whitefish. Sheepshead are still eating well off the deeper kelp stalks. They are excellent table fare. A whole Shrimp on a dropper loop is the best bet for the bigger toothy “goats”, especially near any Lobster pots. San Diego Bay is producing a solid fall Bass, Spotted Sand bite in 20-40 feet of water, especially on the channel edges and deeper holes off the Eel grass. Shark, Leopard are moving in for their spawn and can be found in 6-15 feet of water. A few Halibut, Pacific are coming off the edges in the slack tide when they slide up to feed in the less turbulent water; two hours preceding and in the low slack they can be caught right off the edge of the Eel grass, especially if there is bait activity around.

OFFSHORE – The big NW swell kept a lot of the overnight and longer boats at the dock again this past week. Yellowtail are showing deep on bait in their normal winter mode as boats able to get out to the offshore banks south of the border are having good success on the yoyo iron and butterfly jigs in 150 to 200 feet of water. Not one Tuna, Yellowfin was caught in the local offshore (1-4 day) counts, which, by my research, is a first for 2015 for the San Diego fleet. The long-range boats are doing well down south of Cedros to the Hurricane Bank with lots of Yellowfin over 200 pounds and good limit-type Wahoo action on the high spots.

BAIT REPORT – There are still Anchovies running in the shallow water this week.

La Jolla Fishing Report

INSHORE – There are still some Bass, Calico biting so far this week. The bite has been fairly decent and the sizes have been good. Yellowtail are hitting along the bottom and are plentiful this week. Squid is still working for the Bass along with anchovies.

OFFSHORE – There are some solid Tuna, Yellowfin in the deep water. The bite has increased over last week however still hasn’t quite heated up yet. Flatlining is still the best method to catch this week. There are no signs of Tuna, Bluefin yet however we won’t be surprised to see a few turn up over the weekend.

BAIT REPORT – Anchovies are still running this week and doing well inshore.

La Jolla Fishing Report

INSHORE – Bass, Calico have continued to bite this week and are doing well. Yellowtail have also turned up and are in good numbers. The Calico are hitting swim baits or Squid off the bottom while the Yellows are preferring yoyo jigs in mint/white or blue/white. They are hiding out in the deeper water, ledges and drop offs so far. These area are still fairly close to shore however. There have been no signs of Surfperch, Barred or Corbina, California yet this week.

OFFSHORE – The offshore bite has slowed down quite a bit this week. Anglers are still seeing the occasional Tuna, Yellowfin however they have dropped off a lot. There has been a spotty Tuna, Bluefin bite as well however they are sporadically coming up with the Yellowfin. Anglers are catching most of their fish while flatlining.

BAIT REPORT – Small anchovies are running this week and working well as inshore bait. Check out Angler’s Choice Shimano specials including 30% off select rods, sales on a variety of reels and Free braid on select reels.

La Jolla Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Bass, Calico bite has been on fire just about everywhere in the area lately. They can be found in the kelp, around La Jolla and among the jetties. They are loving the plastic swim baits. There have not been reports from the surf yet however you can expect that there are still Surfperch, Barred and Corbina, California swimming this week.

OFFSHORE – Bottom fishing has been great in the San Diego area lately. The bay is full of bait which is perfect for all the fish out here. From the point to the border of Mexico there has been a great Tuna, Yellowfin bite at about half to three quarter day trip range. Anglers have been live lining Anchovies, Sardines and Mackerel to get them. Shimano flat fall jigs have been a great alternative as well. In roughly 70-90 ft of water there have also been reports of some Lingcod resting on the bottom and farther out at the Coronado Islands there have even been some Wahoo turning up. It’s a mixed bag this week and the bite is expected to continue if the weather stays favorable.

BAIT REPORT – There are lots of bait running in the offshore this week. Happy Holidays from Angler’s Arsenal. Stop in and receive an extra 10% bonus on any gift certificate over $25!

INSHORE – Fishing in the surf has been fairly solid this week. Surfperch, barred and Corbina, California are coming in on Lucky Crabs and Sand Worms. A variety of Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Lingcod) are still expected to be swimming in the nearshore however there have been no reports so far this week.

OFFSHORE – The Tuna, Yellowfin have finally come in and are swimming at the 9 mile mark this week. Anglers have been live-lining bait and finding this the most effective method. The Tuna, Bluefin and Wahoo have not had any reports so far this week and are expected to have slowed down even more than last week. Anglers heading out this holiday weekend can check out our Tips feature with more information and suggestions to improve the catch.

OFFSHORE – There are plenty of Yellowtail in the offshore weighing in up to 60 lbs. The Tuna, Bluefin and Wahoo have slowed down but can still be reeled in in fairly large sizes on the South side. Anglers are getting them on the troll and fly lining Anchovy or Sardines once they find a good spot. Some Dorado have even showed up in the deep water as well. They are coming in fairly good sizes.

BAIT REPORT – There are plenty of Mackerel, Greenbacks, Sardines and Anchovy running for bait this week. Angler’s Choice website is up and running so check it out for Black Friday specials and select rods on discount.

La Jolla Fishing Report

INSHORE – The bay is host to a few different species. Halibut, Pacific are swimming alongside Bonefish. Bones, although rare, are showing up in the South bay. Bonita, Pacific can also be found inshore. Halibut have been hitting soft plastics and cut Squid. Anglers are finding them around 20-30 ft. range while the Bones are specifically chasing Ghost Shrimp in 10 ft of water. Sometime they will be tailing but for the most part the Bones will be hiding in the grass, so a Carolina rig works best. Bass (Seabass, White) and Bay Bass (Bass, spotted sand) have had a great bite as well.

OFFSHORE – The bite out here has been fantastic lately. Yellowtail are still swimming coming up around 5-15lbs. Boats are even getting into the bigger the bigger Yellows too using irons. There are also large schools of Bonito, Pacific in the water along with good amounts of Skipjack. These species are located anywhere from 2-40 miles out. Anglers suggest either looking for birds or kelp patties. They can be found mixed in with the kelp. There are a few Wahoo left and are chasing Mackerel however they have become spotty so not everyone has been reeling them in.

BAIT REPORT – Lots of Mackerel are swimming inshore and can be found along patties, caught on Sabiki rigs. Some are weighing in around a half pound which is great for high speed trolling for Wahoo or bigger Tuna. November 28th is Small Business Saturday and Angler’s Arsenal is having a great Tackle Swap to celebrate. La Jolla Fishing Report

INSHORE – Most anglers are bottom fishing in the shallower water. There have been reports of a few Yellowtail and Cuda (Barracuda, California) both hitting live bait. As an artificial alternative Shimano flat-falls are working for Yellows, as well as megabaits. For more suggestions you can always check out our Tips feature which provides more information on your favourite fish.

OFFSHORE – The weather has been pretty tough in this area as of late. Most anglers are fishing for Tuna, Yellowfin anywhere from 12-15 miles at the islands to a day and a half out. Keep in mind, anyone who fishes the islands will need to have a valid passport and tourist visa to make sure they are abiding to state regulations.

BAIT REPORT – There are still Mackerel running. Anglers can find them by looking for the birds as they are right beneath them.
