Kiptopeke Fishing Report

INSHORE – During the Winter season most the migratory fish have left the area and the variety of fish available in State waters are slim. Some anglers are still targeting Tautog offshore and Stripers (Oceanside) inshore. There are not many boats left on the water over winter but the local tackle shops can always point you in the right direction if you are looking to get a trip in this winter. As we find varying weather conditions from day to day we encourage all anglers to stay safe and warm when fishing. This is a great opportunity to check out some of the current Pro Angler App features along with new additions coming soon. We look forward to bringing you more great Pro Reports when the bite fires back up.

INSHORE – The Spring pattern has begun to set into place this week.Tautog are swimming the bay bridge Tunnel. In Lynnhaven Inlet, in the warmer backwaters, we are seeing Speckled Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) to almost 5 pounds along with a few Puppy Drum (Drum, Red). Using MirrOlures and casting Gulps has worked extremely well to hook them. Flounder [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] haven’t quite shown up yet. Kiptopeke Fishing Report

INSHORE – Rockfish (Bass, Striped) are now limited to catch and release fishing however they are still providing great action for anglers heading out this week. They are being hooked all over the bay so far and in the ocean we hope to see them move inside 3 miles. The main focus going forward will be Speckled Trout (Seatrout, Spotted), Redfish (Drum, Red), and Tautog inshore. The Trout can be found all throughout the bay however with the cooler temperatures they become lethargic and therefore a bit more picky about what they will take. MirrOlures are generally a good bet in the cold water. Rudee, James and Lynnhaven Inlets are the best places to find them. Anglers will usually find Puppy Drum as bycatches in the same areas. Tautog hold up on structure so the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel is a key location to fish. Once the bite turns on, don’t go too far as you’re likely to bring in a few fish at the same point. If the bridge is slow, the concrete ships at Kiptopeke are a great alternative. Pro Angler App Users – Tap a fish below for additional tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – In the ocean, there are still some fish to be caught nearshore this week. The bottom bite continues to produce some Tilefish (Tilefish, Blueline), Grouper (Grouper, Gag), and Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black). Keep in mind the Sea Bass are catch and release only. The Triangle wrecks are producing Flounder (Flounder, Winter), Tautog and Sea Bass this week.

Kiptopeke Fishing Report

INSHORE – This week we are still seeing Tautog caught however the bite seems to be hit or miss. It’s dependant on the weather and if anglers can make it on the water. They seem to be holding up in deeper areas starting in 30 ft and moving out. The mouth of the Chesapeake Bay and the Bay Bridge Tunnel has been a key area to find them. Farther out the Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) have still been caught. Anglers are beginning to search for them from 15-20 miles. They can be found consistently off of Ocean City. 60-70 ft seems to be a key depth for them. There are some Tautog mixed in. Clam and Squid are generally your best bet to catch either fish. Things are winding down for inshore Stripers (Bass, Striped) mainly due to a lack of anglers. We see very few BIG fish left when anglers can get on the water to fish them. There are some anglers waiting to see if any will move inside the 3 mile line however this may not happen for a while. In the Bay, Bucktails and jigs have been your best bet to catch them. Live Eels on a slow troll is alo productive, especially in the Cape Charles area. Search in roughly 30-40 ft for decent sizes. 42 and 59A are producing particularly well. You can look for birds to find fish however they won’t always be there. The bite is very sporadic some days. Towards the Rudee Inlet we are still finding some Specks (Seatrout, Spotted) turning up with a sporadic Drum (Drum, Red) bite. They are fairly small sizes. Finger Mullet is the most productive bait into this week while the Trout still prefer Gulp on a jighead.

Kiptopeke Fishing Report

INSHORE – As always there are plenty of Dogfish (Dogfish, Spiny) to be caught this week. Anglers continue to target the Stripers (Bass, Striped) however the migratory fish still have not made their way inside the 3 mile line. A couple decent fish continue to turn up on live Eels on a slow troll. Cape Charles has been a hot area. Tautog continue to bite into this week on the wrecks and reefs. Generally Green Crab is best to hit them. Moving to the Rudee Inlet we are still seeing Specks (Seatrout, Spotted) caught. Gulp on a jig is working well to hook them along with a few topwaters. Puppy Drum (Drum, Red) are scattered but if you put some time in there will still be a few to catch. If you are targeting them, cut Finger Mullet has been most productive. Pro Angler App Users – Tap a fish listed below the report to view more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – Nearshore and offshore there is still a decent bottom bite for Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black), Blackbelly Rose Fish, Tilefish (Tilefish, Blueline & Tilefish, Golden) as well as Bluefish. We hope to see this continue into the new year. Pro Angler App Users – Tap a fish listed below the report to view more angling tips and tricks!

Kiptopeke Fishing Report

INSHORE – Speckled Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) continue to bite this week. We are finding them in Rudee Inlet and Lynnhaven Inlet throughout the interior backwaters. They will likely slow down soon but it has been a great year for them overall. MirrOlures and Xraps as well as Redheads with Plastic tails are working well. Zman, Gulp and Bass Assassin usually produce as well. A few local Stripers (Bass, Striped) are inside the inlets at night around the docks. In the bay there are some schoolie fish from 18-28 inches. Up the bay there are plenty of schoolies under the birds from the York River into Maryland. The big fish are being caught on Eels on the Eastern shore side up the bay North of Cape Charles. Kiptopeke Fishing Report

INSHORE – The bite has been quite slow lately. Skates (Skate, Winter) and Bluefish have been caught. Schoolie Stripers (Bass, Striped) are turning up but no keepers yet. Inside Rudee Inlet we are seeing Specks (Seatrout, Spotted) and Redfish (Drum, Red). Trolling live Eels has been productive. Schoolie Stripers are taking cut Finger Mullet. Cut Shrimp are better for the smaller fish around the inlet. Pro Angler App Users – Tap a fish listed below the report to view more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – Boats are hitting the wrecks for Tilefish (Tilefish, Blueline). There are some bigger Bluefish biting out there as well. The head boats are a bit better at handling the rougher water so there hasn’t been a lot of sport boats headed out. Kiptopeke Fishing Report

INSHORE – Speckled Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are still biting inside the inlet with Puppy Drum (Drum, Red). Specks are abundant and are still larger sizes. They are inside Lynnhaven Inlet. Jigheads and MirrOlures are working well to hook them. Tautog are biting well on the Bay Bridge Tunnel and the inshore wrecks. They are taking Green Crab and Blue Crab. Big Rockfish (Bass, Striped) have caught everyone’s attention the past few weeks. They are biting well from Plantation Light to Tangier Island. Anglers are slow trolling Eels on Planer Boards or drifting with Float Rigs. There have been a few fish caught from 30-50 lbs recently. Schoolies are still in the inlets under dock lights along with the bay bridge tunnel on casting jigs. There has also been a report of a 40 lb Rockfish caught at the bay bridge tunnel using an Eel. INSHORE – Striped Bass (Bass, Striped) are coming in. There are good numbers but small sizes. Troll or cast Bucktails and swim baits along the James River Bridge. Follow the birds and look for the baitfish. Catfish are around the Power Plant around back. Nice sized Tautog are biting on the offshore wrecks. They can also be found in the back bay reefs, Baltimore Channel as well as the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. The Bay Bridge Tunnel fishing pier might be holding fish from shore. Speckled Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are in the river. Around Chesapeake Avenue rock structures they are taking spoons and plugs.

OFFSHORE – Blueline Tilefish (Tilefish, Blueline) are on the offshore and triangle wrecks. Anglers are deep dropping using Squid. Tautog can be found on the offshore wrecks.

INSHORE – Specks (Seatrout, Spotted), Puppy Drum (Drum, Red) and small Stripers (Bass, Striped) are swimming the inlets. Stripers and Tautog have been caught around the bridge tunnel. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are holding up on the inshore and nearshore wrecks. Towards Hampton we are seeing Stripers and Drum as well. For the most part the fish are holding up on structure. Rock piles, bridges and reefs are great places to search. Generally the bite is hottest in the morning but this can change from week to week. Your best bet is to fish a moving tide. INSHORE – In the rivers and inlets anglers are doing well with Puppy Drum (Drum, Red) and Specks (Seatrout, Spotted). Drum are biting off the low tide when everything moves back in. The tide is important in the bay. The Trout are taking MirrOlures or Berkley Gulp on Jigs. Drum are taking cut Mullet. Stripers (Bass, Striped) are scattered. Bloodworms are a great bait to throw. Spot are swimming but most of them have moved out. Sea Mullet (Kingfish, Southern) area around the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. Fish either side of the high tide for the Trout, Bass and Sea Mullet.

Kiptopeke Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Rudee Inlet bite has continued to be predominantly Croaker (Croaker, Atlantic) and Spot, with the Spot bite on the rise. Popular baits for anglers looking to target these two species have been live Bloodworms and Squids on a bottom rig. There are still a few lingering Flounder [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] reportedly being caught using gulp on a light jig head. Puppy Drum (Drum, Red) are still here if you can find them biting on cut finger Mullet. There are some Speckled Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) that have started to move in hitting on the occasional Gulp or MirrOlure. Fall fishing in Rudee inlet is usually pretty good, so be sure to get outside and throw a line in. Don’t forget to stop in our store for all of your Rudee Inlet fishing needs. The inshore charters have continued to catch some Spanish Mackerel (Mackerel, Spanish) and Bluefish while trolling up and down our coast. Kiptopeke Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Rudee Inlet bite has continued to be a mixed one. We have heard some reports of more Flounders (Flounder, Southern) being caught, with some nice keepers in the mix. They have been hitting best on live minnows as well as the gulps on a light jig head. There are still some lingering Bluefish and Speckled Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) that have been hitting on top-water artificials, The Bluefish have also been hitting cut Finger Mullet off the bottom. Croaker and Spot have continued to bite on live Bloodworms and Squid. We had the High Hopes and Top Notch do a little inshore trolling today. They both returned to the docks with a nice haul of Spanish Mackerel (Mackerel, Spanish) with some Bluefish in the mix.

OFFSHORE – We have several offshore charters scheduled for tomorrow so be sure to check back with us around 5 tomorrow evening to see how they did, and for the most up to date offshore report.

INSHORE – Things are wide open in the lower Chesapeake bay. They are catching Tarpon up to 25 lbs. A lot of Spot and Croaker (Croaker, Atlantic) have also turned up. A lot of Bluefish have been caught up to 3 lbs. The bigger sizes are coming up from around the tunnel. Flounder (Flounder, Southern) is slow. There are some small sizes caught but not too many keepers. We hope to see this carry into the weekend.

OFFSHORE – Crabs are great this week. Better than they have been in a long time.

INSHORE – This week the Cobia have been really hot, especially outside of the rock pile off of Grandview where the old lighthouse was in about 8 ft. of water. There were also a lot of Reds (Drum, Red) by Bluefish Rock to the point that the water was tinted red because there were so many of them busting bait. A few Croakers (Croaker, Atlantic) have also been caught but there don’t seem to be nearly as many around as the Reds.

INSHORE – Anglers are catching a lot of Croaker (Croaker, Atlantic) this week from the bottom. The sizes are good so far. At the first channel outside in the ocean off the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay we are seeing a lot of Cobia. Bluefish are swimming the same area. They are great sizes around 3-4 lbs. Cobia are also inside the bay around Bluefish rock and the Plantation light. Not all are keepers but if you put some time in you’ll find some keepers. We expect this to carry into the weekend.

Kiptopeke Fishing Report

INSHORE – The High Hopes went out the other morning on a half day inshore and had some success catching some beautiful Bluefish as well as some Bonita (Bonito, Atlantic), and Mackerel (Mackerel, Atlantic) in the mix. The inshore fishing has been steadily picking up as the weather here has started heating up the water. The inshore bite has started producing a mixed bite of Bluefish, Mackerel, Flounder (Flounder, Winter), and some nice Redfish (Drum, Red) as well. There are some small Sharks starting to move in as well.

OFFSHORE – The offshore boats have been running mostly deep drop trips here recently as we await for the arrival of some great trolling fishing. The deep drop trips have had some awesome catches of Black Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) since the season reopened on the 15th. They have also caught some Blueline Tilefish (Tilefish, Blueline), and Snowy Grouper (Grouper, Snowy). The last trip the Rudee Angler Ran offshore was packed full of Citation catches. Pretty work by Capt Mark and Capt Skip! We are hoping the that fleet will be out trolling the Norfolk Canyon in the near future for Blue and White Marlin (Billfish – Marlin, Blue & Billfish – Marlin, White), Mahi (Dolphin), and Wahoo. We are looking forward to another awesome summer of offshore fishing!

Kiptopeke Fishing Report

INSHORE – With breezy weather making access to the evolving spring fishery a challenge, anglers are taking advantage of weather windows when they can. The biggest new interest is the emerging Drum (Drum, Black) scene, which is motivating many anglers to gather Crabs and head for the Eastern Shore shoals during calm spells. Red Drum (Drum, Red) are still providing some decent action among the shoals and sloughs near Smith and Fisherman’s Island, and this activity should continue to improve over the next weeks as we approach the next full moon. The best action is still happening among the surf and breakers, where some nice Rockfish (Bass, Striped) are also mixed in. The Black Drum bite is also shaping up, with a few big fish showing up this week, but most blacks are still ranging under 36-inches. The best local Black Drum action is occurring along the Eastern Shore seaside inlets, surf, and near buoys 13 and 16 on the Bayside. This trend will also continue to heat up over the next few weeks, and larger fish will become more common. Some folks are taking advantage of the Bay’s Spring Trophy Striped Bass season. Anglers working topwater lures along the rocks at the islands of the CBBT are content with some rockfish exceeding 36-inches. Storm lures cast around the pilings of the CBBT is also working well. Be sure to check these regulations carefully. Anglers fishing from the Ocean View Fishing Pier are still enjoying good catches of medium-sized Croaker and small Spot, with scattered Sea Mullet (Kingfish, Southern) also providing some diversity. Bloodworms are working best for everything right now. Surf and pier anglers are also finding good luck with Spot and Croaker from the shorelines off Ocean View and Little Creek, as well as Buckroe. Good numbers of keeper Flounder (Flounder, Southern) are coming from the Eastern Shore seaside inlets and the back waters of Oyster, while a few flatfish are also coming from within both Lynnhaven and Rudee Inlets. The lower Bay flounder fishery will pick up once the water temperature stabilizes. Anglers are still catching some Speckled Trout (Seatrout, Spotted), healthy puppy Drum and nice Bluefish to over five-pounds in Rudee Inlet and along the oceanfront, where some early season Spanish Mackerel (Mackerel, Spanish) also showed this week.

OFFSHORE – Tautog are still very active on lower Bay and inshore structures, but now these fish are only available for catch and release until September. Big Seabass are available on these same structures, and you can begin catching them again on the 15th of the month. Look for sheepshead to become active in a few weeks. Blueline Tilefish (Tilefish, Blueline) ranging up to 16-pounds, Wreckfish, and other deep water species are still available in deeper water over 50 fathoms when the weather allows boats to reach them. The upcoming opening of Sea bass (Sea Bass, Black) season on May 15th has many anglers excited about making the run. You can keep up to fifteen black Sea bass at 12.5-inches.

Kiptopeke Fishing Report

INSHORE – From Rudee Inlet – Though is may be raining here inside Rudee Inlet, it does not mean the fish will not be biting. Though anglers may mind the rain the fish certainly do not. We are still getting reports of some nice Bluefish biting inside Rudee Inlet, though the Speckled Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) bite may have slowed down some, we have still weighed in a few citations in recent days. We weighed in a beautiful Bluefish in the other day, one that hit the scales at a whopping 16 pounds and 3 ounces, caught inside Rudee Inlet. Popular baits continue to be the Gulps on a light jig head, as well as top water artificial’s. If you are the kind of angler who prefers to go the cut bait route, you will be best off using cut Finger Mullet or Squid. From the Inshore – The inshore bite has remained slow, as the ocean is still warming up. Once the inshore waters along our coast warm up just a tad bit more, we are sure it will be another year of great inshore fishing out of Rudee Inlet. Currently we have heard reports of a lot of Clearnose Skates being caught off the bottom in close to the shore. There are some Bluefish that are starting to make their way out along our coastline. We are happy to hear that there are some small Rockfish (Bass, Striped) being caught and released as well, though this is a very scattered bite, it is still great news! As we continue to have warmer weather, and the ocean temp continues to rise, great fishing can only be just around the corner. Inshore fishing out of Rudee Inlet during the summer months brings an array of species that Anglers can expect to come across including Bluefish, Cobia, Flounder [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)], Red Drum (Drum, Red), Sharks, Spanish Mackerel (Mackerel, Spanish), as well as the occasional Black Drum (Drum, Black) and King Mackerel (Mackerel, King). We are already booking trips for this summer so be sure to book your next fishing adventure with us to lock in a date that is most convenient for you and your crew.

OFFSHORE – Offshore fishing is continuing to heat up with us hearing reports of some nice Yellowfin Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin) and Mahi (Dolphin) being caught out at the Norfolk canyon. Our fleet is ready to start fishing offshore, getting you on the fish and bringing back some nice hauls of meat to the docks. Roughly 70 miles from the Docks, while offshore trolling you may fish for Blue Marlin (Billfish – Marlin, Blue), White Marlin (Billfish – Marlin, White), Sailfish (Billfish, Sailfish), Mahi, Wahoo, Yellowfin Tuna, Sharks. There are also many wreck fish that can be targeted including but not limited to – Black Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black), Golden Tilefish (Tilefish, Sand), Blueline Tilefish (Tilefish, Blueline), Blackbelly Rose Fish, and Snowy Grouper (Grouper, Snowy) for those looking to do a little bottom fishing.

INSHORE – The Bluefish are slowly starting to make their appearance along the coast line and are hitting plastics. There have also been reports of throwback sized Rockfish (BAss, Striped) being caught along the beach as well. We are anxiously waiting on the water temperature to warm up for some more inshore action. Before long we should start seeing some great catches of Mackerel (Mackerel, Spanish) and Bluefish, as well as some release Redfish (Drum, Red).

OFFSHORE – The offshore bite has remained mostly bottom fish, including Tilefish (Tilefish, Blueline), some really nice Bluefish, Black Belly Rosefish, and other Wreckfish mixed in. As the Water temperature continues to rise in the near future we are expecting to see some Mahi and Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin) on the troll, as well as some great Marlin (Billfish – Marlin, White & Billfish – Marlin, Blue) fishing!

Kiptopeke Fishing Report

INSHORE – The local water temperatures continue to rise, and the Spring fishing season is heating up accordingly. But with some windy days in the near forecast, boats will likely stay close to shore for the weekend. With the Virginia Cobia season threatened by restrictive regulations this year, anglers are looking for some positive news on the fishing front. Flounder (Flounder, Southern) have debuted in the seaside inlets on the Eastern Shore, where anglers are watching for optimal days to target them with strip bait and gudgeons, especially in Wachapreague and Oyster. This action will only improve as the water continues to warm.Tautog action is still going strong, and the Spring tog bite has really taken off within Bay waters. And with fiddler crabs now available, it is game-on. Fiddler crabs and even Blue Crabs are working well on lower Bay structures and wrecks. The rocks and tubes of the artificial islands and the pilings near the High Rise section of the Bridge Tunnel are providing very good results. The Concrete Ships, the Cape Henry wreck, and the Yancy wreck are also providing some good action when folks can get to them. Most anglers are catching limits of fish ranging to around 4-pounds, but some nicer Tog over 6-pounds are also in the mix. Deeper water wrecks are also producing nice Tautog, with fish to 15-pounds taking offered crab in water ranging to around 70 to 100-feet. Sea bass (Sea Bass, Black) are also available on many of these deeper structures, but they are still illegal to keep. Anglers fishing inside Rudee Inlet are excited about an early season run of nice Bluefish, with some of these fish reported at over 10-pounds this week. Folks are catching nice Blues throughout the inlet from jetties, docks and boats, and as far back as the boat ramp area. Plenty of small schoolie Stripers (Bass, Striped) are also bombarding baits as folks target Bluefish. Some Croaker are hitting in the tributary rivers, and should continue to heat up as the season evolves. Roundhead and Drum (Drum, Black) will also show themselves soon.

OFFSHORE – The deep water off the Virginia coast is still the place to be if you wish to crank up Tilefish (Tilefish, Gray), Blackbelly Rose Fish and Grouper (Grouper, Gag) from over 300 feet of water. Be aware that plenty of pesky Dogfish (Dogfish, Spiny) are still ready to compete for your bait, but not for much longer. Offshore anglers are hoping for a good year. Although the bluewater fish may be within range of the Virginia fleet, boats are waiting for a break in the wind to check out the scene.

INSHORE – The Tautog have been holding up in the bay this week. Most are small and not big enough to keep but you can catch and release them. If you put some time in you may find a few good sizes however. There are some nice keeper Flounder (Flounder, Summer (Fluke)) around the the Chesapeake bay tunnel as well. They are fairly scattered at this point but we expect to see them heat up soon. Kiptopeke Fishing Report

INSHORE – We are expecting the first reports of Flounder (Flounder, Southern & Flounder, Winter) to show up in the area. There will also be some Croaker moving in very shortly as well in the lower bay. Following this should be a great Drum (Drum, Black) and Redfish (Drum, Red) bite. Stripers (Bass, Striped) will be off limits by the end of the month however the bite has dropped off anyways. They are moving into the bay so anglers targeting them can search these specific trails.

OFFSHORE – Anglers are excited for the long awaited Spring bite that should be arriving very soon. The water temperatures are increasing and the pattern seems to be right on schedule. Tautog continue to bite well throughout the offshore this week. The sizes are great so far as anglers weigh in up to 15 lbs! The Tog will be making their way into the bay within the next few weeks so we should see them turn up closer in. Fiddler Crabs have been working great to hook them. They have been holding up on structures that are also holding some great Sea Bass, Black this week. They are loving live bait that is slowly moving back in. The ocean floor is holding some nice Tilefish, Blueline. They can be found in about 300 ft of water. We are also seeing some Dogfish, Spiny in the same area. They are taking a lot of the bait of deep droppers searching for Tilefish. There have also been reports of Blackbelly Rose Fish, Wreckfish and Grouper on the bottom. The bite is a bit scattered due to the Dogfish. We expect some exciting changes and hot bite coming soon!

Kiptopeke Fishing Report

INSHORE – The water temperatures are heating up as Spring quickly approaches. It shouldn’t be long now until we see a Spring pattern set in. This should provide anglers with a Mackerel, Spanish bite along with increased Redfish (Drum, Red), Flounder (Flounder, Winter), Bluefish and Shark bite. Anglers getting prepared can also check out our FIsh feature which provides additional information and tips to help keep your lines tight.

OFFSHORE – The weather has been improving in this area as of late. Anglers are beginning to gear up for the Spring bite and we are seeing some Tog (Tautog) turn up this week. The sizes are nothing special as of yet however the bite has been pretty good. There are still some shorts but we expect to see this increase soon. With the Spring pattern coming in we hope to see some Marlin (Billfish – Marlin, Blue & Billfish – Marlin, White) move in. At this point we should expect some Sails (Billfish, Sailfish), Wahoo and Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin & Tuna, Bigeye) as well.

Kiptopeke Fishing Report

INSHORE – Anglers are facing slim fishing prospects right now. With seasonal closures, less that optimal availability of fishing opportunities, and even more fisheries management regulations up for consideration, folks are becoming disheartened. Hopes are high that the spring fishing season will bring better days. With a limited selection of species to target inshore, most anglers will head to offshore wrecks in search of Tautog during weather windows. Most boats are targeting mid-range wrecks, such as the Triangle Wreck area. Some decent fish weighing to over 20-pounds were boated from these areas lately. Be prepared to weed through tons of big Sea Bass, Black to obtain your limit of three Tog per person at 16-inches, but be sure to release the Seabass since they are out of season. With Tog bait hard to come by, plan ahead to secure your bait. Clams, Mussels, Blue Crabs, Peelers, Hermit Crabs, Green Crabs, Jonah Crabs, or Stone Crabs will work. Schools of big Rockfish (Bass, Striped) continue to roam 15 to 20 miles off the coast, well out of reach of boats. As these fish begin to head back into the Bay to spawn, anglers may intercept them for catch and release activity in the Bay for now, but most folks will not be interested. With the poor speckled trout showing this season winter, most folks are not trying anymore. Although the Tuna, Bluefin passed us by, a few boats are still getting in on the action by making the long run to North Carolina. Deep dropping is always a good this time of year when the weather allows boats to get to deeper water. Nice Tilefish, Blueline are still the staple species along the 50-fathom curve, with plenty of fish available weighing in over the 10-pound minimum for a state citation. Deeper areas along the Canyon edges are showing more activity with Blackbelly Rose Fish and scattered Tilefish, Sand. A variety of Grouper and Barrelfish are also a possibility, but Dogfish, Spiny are making fishing for these deep water species a challenge. A by-catch of black Seabass is almost a given in these areas, but they are illegal to keep. Both metal jigs and Squid or cut bait is working well.

Kiptopeke Fishing Report

INSHORE – As we’ve been reporting over the last month, Tautog fishing remains strong. Anglers that are able to find crab for bait are doing very well. Ocean wrecks are the best producers. Tilefish, Blueline are willing biters also.

OFFSHORE – The deeper water near the Canyon edges are the targeted areas. Along with Tilefish, Grouper (Grouper, Gag), and Rosefish (Blackbelly Rose Fish) are being encountered as well as Seabass (Sea Bass, Black), but Seabass are out of season. A 220lb Tuna, Bluefin was reported out of Oregon-Inlet. The same charter returned with Tuna, Yellowfin also.

Seabass (Sea Bass, Black) are a by-catch, but must be returned as the season is closed for now. According to reports from Oregon-Inlet, Bluefin Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) are starting to be caught, and Yellowfin (Snapper, Yellowfin) are also being caught. Deep water bottom charters are catching Tilefish (Tilefish, Sand), Barrelfish, Grouper (Grouper, Gag & Grouper, Red), and Rosefish (Blackbelly Rose Fish) when conditions allow anglers to venture out.

Kiptopeke Fishing Report

INSHORE – We still have not heard of any ocean Rockfish (Bass, Striped) being caught. The only species that seems to be being caught in recent days is Dogfish (Dogfish, Spiny). We have had several boats attempt to do some Striped Bass fishing, trolling up and down our beautiful coast, but have had no luck with landing a legal fish. The last report we have received is that the fish remain up in the bay where there continues to be plenty of bait staying in the warmer waters. There are also plenty of Whales still being spotted outside of Rudee Inlet by Rudee Tours Whale Watching if you are looking for a fun family trip check them out!

OFFSHORE – Though the sun is shining here these past few days it does not really help to warm things up. With temperatures near freezing, and a wind chill in the near teens, it has not made for the greatest fishing conditions. The inshore forecast has had some sustained high winds, bringing seas to between 5 and 6 feet. While the offshore forecast is even worse with seas between 8 and fourteen feet. No matter if your fishing inshore or offshore you can expect freezing spray on the deck of the boat with these frigid temperatures. Deep Drop Fishing remains successful with some great catches of Tilefish (Tilefish, Great Northern & Tilefish, Blueline), Blackbelly Rose Fish, Grouper, Wreckfish, and Barrelfish being brought back to the dock. We have not had any reports of any Bluefin (Tuna, Bluefin) being caught, though we have heard of some Swordfish (Billfish – Swordfish) biting out at the canyon.

Kiptopeke Fishing Report

INSHORE – We have been receiving a lot of calls and emails asking about the infamous Rockfish (Bass, Striper). We are sad to say that we have not heard of any ocean Rockfish caught since the closing of the Bay Season, and Rockfish are no longer allowed to be kept inside of the Chesapeake Bay. This is not due to the lack of effort, we have had both charter boats and private boats out in search for them in legal waters outside of Rudee Inlet. We had one of the charter boats travel up in the bay and caught and released some nice ones. On the way back they threw out a couple of lines and had a few throw backs. The Bluefin have yet to make an appearance as well, we are hoping that we can get a little bit of luck here soon and have either or make an appearance.

OFFSHORE – The Rudee Angler returned last night with another great haul of fish! They had some really nice catches of Tilefish (Tilefish, Blueline), Blackbelly Rose Fish, Chomper Bluefish, a handful of Yellowfin Bass, and a 52.5 lb Golden Tilefish (Tilefish, Great Northern). There was also a few smooth dogs in the mix. Keep in mind that deep drop fishing is great out of Rudee Inlet year round. There are plenty of bottom fish to be caught offshore!

Kiptopeke Fishing Report

INSHORE – There is not a whole lot happening inshore this week. There are no signs of Stripers (Bass, Striped) caught so far. They are closed through the inshore but open farther out. Reports of Tog (Tautog) turning up in great sizes. The bite is consistent however the weights are up to 18 lbs. As the weather cools we hope to see an increased bite and size.

OFFSHORE – Not a lot has changed offshore this week. Sea Bass, Black and Flounder, Winter are still biting in the deep water both in good sizes and numbers. The best bet is to cast Squid to the bottom to find them. This has been more of the focus of most anglers as the Striper bite inshore is so slow yet.

BAIT REPORT – Shiners and Mullet are both running this week and working well for inshore fish.

INSHORE – The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) bite is spotty this week as anglers have had a hard time locating the fish. The best bite has been throughout the inlets using mirrolures or jigheads with plastic gulp tails. There was a report of one caught off the beach however this seemed to be irregular and there have been none caught in the bay so far. There are no reports of Tautog at this time however we do not expect that they have moved out quite yet.

OFFSHORE – Sea Bass, Black are turning up along with some Flounder (Flounder, Winter) on the offshore triangle wrecks that are pretty far out. The bite has been consistent and they are coming up in great sizes so far. Tuna, Blackfin bite has died off this week while anglers are mainly focusing on deep dropping for Bass and Tilefish, Sand this week. They are being hooked at roughly 300-500 ft of water.

BAIT REPORT – There are still some Menhaden swimming in the bay so far this week.

Kiptopeke Fishing Report

INSHORE – Tog (Tautog) have been biting on the inshore wrecks, the back river reefs and the islands. Fiddler Crabs have been the best bait to throw this week as the Tog cannot resist them. There has also been some great Stripers (Bass, Striped) turning up as well. Some are weighing in up to 45 lbs. Most anglers are heading up North for them towards buoy 46, Tangier Island and the top end. There are some nice fish, locally, in the James river as well. There have been no reports from the surf as of yet. Anglers are hoping the running baitfish will bring the bigger sizes in. Live bait of course is working well, especially Mullet as it is running.

OFFSHORE – The offshore wrecks at 80-110 ft of water are holding some great fish so far. There have been Flounder, Winter showing up weighing in at 14lb! There have also been reports of Sea Bass, Black coming in both great sizes and numbers. A bottom rig with a heavy fluorocarbon leader and Squid on the end has been choice for anglers this week. They can be found anywhere around the triangle wrecks in the offshore. There have been no signs of Tuna, Bluefin so far.

BAIT REPORT – Shiners and Mullet are both running this week and working well for inshore fish.

INSHORE – Tog (Tautog) are still holding up on the inshore wrecks and are slowly moving outwards. Most people are looking for the pods of bait to find them. Sand Eels are the best give away this week and are also working well as bait. Stripers (Bass, Striped) are also in the Northern part of the Bay where most anglers are targeting this week. They are loving live bait and hitting well on the outgoing tide.

OFFSHORE – There are Sea Bass, Black swimming the offshore reefs this week. They are mixed in with some great sizes of Tuna, Bluefin as well. Both are coming up in good numbers so far as the water temperature has not dropped enough for them to move out yet.

BAIT REPORT – Both Bunker (Menhaden) and Sand Eels are running this week and working well as bait.

Kiptopeke Fishing Report

INSHORE – There continues to be a solid Tautog bite in the bay. They are hitting hard Blue Crab knuckles. Fiddler crabs are no longer available to find so most anglers have switched to the blue. The Striper (Bass, Striped) bite is now increasing as well. The size and numbers are both good so far this week. Anglers fishing schoolies are using storm baits or bucktails while the bigger fish are being caught on live Eels.

BAIT REPORT – So far this week there have been no reports of bait swimming. A lot of anglers are switching to artificial setups as of late.

Kiptopeke Fishing Report

INSHORE – There is a bit more action inshore this week. Lots of Stripers (Bass, Striped) are hitting live Eels along bridges and structures. Anglers heading out at night have found the troll to be fairly successful. There have been no more reports of Tog (Tautog) this week as they seem to have petered out. The bite is expected to continue until the water temperature drops again.

OFFSHORE – On the offshore wrecks there are Sea Bass, Black hiding along the bottom. Anglers have been taking Squid and dropping it right to the bottom to catch them. There has been no shortage either as anglers who can make it out despite the wind are reporting good catches.

BAIT REPORT – So far this week there have not been any bait swimming to report.

Kiptopeke Fishing Report

INSHORE – There have been a lot of good sized Stripers (Bass, Striped) come in this week. Everyone has been catching them on live Eels along the bridge and structures. Trolling at night with silvers on a jig is fairly productive this week as well. There have been no reports of a Seatrout, Spotted bite this week although there were a few Tog (Tautog) turning up in smaller sizes. They are hitting the Green Crabs this week. Bluefish have had a decent bite as well but are starting to become spotty.

OFFSHORE – There is not a lot of action in the offshore this week. Most anglers are waiting for the Bass bite to pick up inshore. There have been no reports from the deep water so far this week however if anglers decide to hit the water this holiday weekend they are welcome to check out our Tips feature which provides additional information and suggestions that can help improve the catch. Kiptopeke Fishing Report

INSHORE – Schoolie sized Stripers (Bass, Striped) are swimming along the bridge. Most anglers are finding the most active catch while trolling at night and jigging silvers. The Seatrout, Spotted bite has also been doing well however they are still small in size due to the previous warm weather having not pushed the larger ones in yet. Anglers are using gulps, bass assassins and swim shads. Both species can be found as far out as 60 ft of water. White Perch (Sand Perch) have been found in the brackish water as of late as well. The outgoing tide has made for the best fishing inshore this week. We’re all waiting for the bigger Stripers, like the ones in NY and NJ, to make their way down.

OFFSHORE – There is not a lot of action happening offshore at the moment. On the wrecks in the bay there are some Tautog being caught on Green Crab however that is pretty much the only fish biting in the deep water. For anglers who decide to brave the unfavorable weather conditions hitting recently they can always check out our Tips feature with lots of additional suggestions and information to improve the catch. Alternatively Bait Shack can also provide an up to the minute fishing report so anglers know exactly what to expect.

BAIT REPORT – There’s not a whole to report for bait this week.

Kiptopeke

INSHORE – Rockfish (Bass, Striped) are still doing pretty well here this week. Lots of birds, bait, and breaking fish in up to 60ft. of water. Jigging sting silvers is working very well. Some anglers are using crippled herring or trolling small bucktails to get into some fish. Give Capt. Ryan a shout for a day of great VA Striper fishing.

Kiptopeke Fishing Report

INSHORE – There is a mixed bag of fish in the shallower water including some leftover Reds (Drum, Red). Spots (Spotfish) and Croaker are gone now. There are a ton of Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) that are chasing berkley gulps on small jigheads. Most sizes are too small to be keepers at this point but continue to grow. Chartreuse and white are the most popular colors for lures. A few Stripers (Bass, Striped) are swimming but are barely better than last year. Anglers are using a bucktail with a curly tail grub to catch these guys. Tautog have a pretty good bite right now as well near the inshore structures.

OFFSHORE – Although spotty, anglers have been running about 10 miles past the light towers to catch Seabass, Black on good Squid. As the water changes they are becoming less frequent but still present.

BAIT REPORT – There aren’t too many bait reports coming in this week. If you are heading out and would like additional suggestions on specific fish and what to use with them you can always rely on our Tips feature which provides lots of information that could help improve your catch.
