Isle of Palms/Dewees Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – Charleston was set to bypass Winter and cruise straight into Spring up until the last two weeks. Abnormally chilly weather sent the water temperatures plummeting and made the bite slow down. Redfish (Drum, Red) hung in there but Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) seemed to go back to their normal slumber. With April however, rising temperatures combined with the arrival of baitfish will get things cranking again! While Redfish remain in large schools, they will begin to break up as the water warms. These fish will leave survival mode and become active feeders once again. Over the last few weeks, Redfish have been finicky with artificial baits but this should improve. Jerk shad rigged on flutter hooks as well as paddle tail grubs on jigheads will both be effective. Try colors that mimic the natural hues of baitfish like such as silver, grey and translucent blue. When Redfish are hesitant, a great solution is to throw chunks of freshly cracked blue Crab. Blue crab is simply Redfish candy and bait that is rarely refused. Remove the top of the shell, the pinchers and the legs and cut the remainder down the middle. I use size 3/0 circle hooks and put the hook through the bottom flipper hole. This setup will work on the flats, under docks and anywhere Redfish are holding. Put the rod in the rod holder and don’t pick it up until the reel is screaming! The Trout bite will begin in earnest this April. The preferred rig of live bait under a popping cork is hard to beat. Live shrimp is now available and will give you another option than Mud Minnows. It’s a good idea to start carrying your cast net and see if you can find some finger Mullet. Finger Mullet under a cork is just deadly. Remember to vary the rate of your retrieve and don’t be afraid to let the current take your cork well past the back of your boat. See you on the water!

BAIT REPORT – Finger Mullet are running and you can cast net for them.

Isle of Palms/Dewees Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – The inshore is still wide open with the finicky weather although the Redfish bite hasn’t tapered off. Anglers are already seeing tailers which is early for the season. Trout has been steady and there has been a surprising number of Black Drum caught. Sheepshead are consistent into this week. Zman soft plastics are a key bait to throw this week. Bad Shad is another great choice and depending on your depth and current using a 3/16 to a quarter ounce Trout Eye jig will work. Baitfish patterns are best. Shrimp will be the best live bait. Frozen or live, it doesn’t really matter as the fish aren’t picky.

OFFSHORE – Nearshore / offshore has been a bit slow. Bull Reds (Drum, Red) are turning up off the nearshore jetties. Farther offshore a handful of Wahoo are being taken on the troll. The bottom bite is steady for Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black). At this time of year, start at 30 feet and move out from there.

BAIT REPORT – There has been a ton of Menhaden coming into the rivers from the South. Mullet are hanging around as well.

Isle of Palms/Dewees Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – Redfish (Drum, Red) are still schooled up and just beginning to break up in the backwater. Mainly artificials are the ticket. Live bait has been tough with the full moon. Moving water is the key to hooking them. Big Reds are at the jetties. There are hit or miss Whiting (Kingfish, Southern) on the beach. A spotty Flounder (Flounder, Southern) bite has also shown up.

OFFSHORE – Sheepshead are swimming nearshore on the wrecks. Wahoo are swimming offshore in 150-200 feet of water. Lighter Blue/White or Pink/White lures on the troll are your best bet. We are still waiting for Dolphin to show up.

Isle of Palms/Dewees Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – This week, wind, wind, wind as the cold front sits upon us. Headed to the docks to take cover. Turned out to be a great call. Big Reds (Drum, Red) smoked cut Mullet especially once the water starting falling. Had to dial the drags down as tight as possible to even stand a chance. Heaviest of the day came in at 14lbs! More productive Isle Of Palms fishing charters. Overall, the warmest weather that I can remember has been terrific for our fishery. Higher than normal water temperatures have made for some productive fishing. I never thought I would say this but there has been a decent trout bite in February! With days filled with sun and 70 degree weather, anglers have to get out there to take advantage. Having spent the last few months laying low and avoiding Dolphins, Redfish are transitioning from a period focused simply on preservation to now becoming predators again. With Redfish still in big schools of up to hundreds of fish, the best fishing will be at low tide when you can sight cast to them. These fish are still spooky so stealth is of utmost importance when approaching a school. Oftentimes, it pays to anchor up when you find a school and wait for them to return to you instead of chasing them down. With these Reds being so wary, I try to disturb the water as little as possible and keep my casting to a minimum. When this happens, it’s time to soak some cut bait. I’ll put chunks of frozen Mullet or Blue Crab on size 3/0 circle hooks and just let it sit on the bottom until the Redfish swim over it. Put your rod in the rod holder and resist the urge (if at all possible!) to set the hook when you see a fish begin to eat. The circle hook will do all the work for you and when your reel starts to sing you are in business. As Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) become more active, popping corks cast along grass banks and over oyster beds will be a good bet paired with mud minnows. I usually use a 18-24 inch leader and a size 1 circle hook. When working the popping cork, always try to keep slack out of your line and when that cork drops just reel to set the hook. You’ll find that the circle hook will rarely miss as long as your line is tight See you on the water!

Isle of Palms/Dewees Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – The cold, rain and wind looks like it will be hanging around the next few days. Once the weather bounces back the surf may fire up the Redfish (Drum, Red) that are passing through. The Spring temperatures early in the season had the fish a bit mixed up so it’s a bit difficult to tell what the actual Spring bite will bring!

BAIT REPORT – Fiddler Crabs were slowly showing back up before the recent cold front.

March 7, 2017

Isle of Palms/Dewees Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – On a good note we can safely say fishing has been consistent all throughout the area. Unfortunately it has been consistently slow. As we wait for the Spring bite to fire up anglers heading out during the day are targeting the ever biting Redfish (Drum, Red) and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted). The bite has been scattered at best but if you have time to search for the bite you’ll find it. Anglers are working Shrimp on the bottom, sometimes with a popping cork however the challenge is both finding the fish and getting them to bite. The fluctuating temperature has both Reds and Trout a bit mixed up. Your best bet is to fish the shallows after the sun has heated up the pockets. They are likely to be a bit more active at this time.

OFFSHORE – Offshore has a bit more of an exciting bite this week. Blackfin (Tuna, Blackfin) has been good during the day at the gulf stream. When weather allows anglers to get out there has been little trouble hooking onto a few decent fish. Head to roughly 180 feet of water or deeper while pulling 2 inch medium Ballyhoo. A handful of Wahoo are swimming however they are hit or miss from day to day. Fishing the moon is still the best method to predict the bite.

BAIT REPORT – Very few bait fish are swimming the beach.

Isle of Palms/Dewees Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – Redfish (Drum, Red) are still steady along with a good bite of Trout (Seatrout, Spotted). Using a more subtle presentation around low tide using live bait is your best bet. Fishing high water around banks with grass patches, use a weedless artificial such as Gulp Shrimp with a worm hook or a weedless spoon is best. Work the creek mouths and points as the water gets up into the grass. If you want to fish structure, low tide is key for finding Reds around docks. This weekend is the Charleston Anglers Spring Fling Event with tons of Vendors, Reps, Sales and Product! Stop in and check it out! PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish listed below the report for additional angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – Usually the Wahoo bite is great this time of year. High Speed trolling between 12-15 knots pulling artificials such as Black Bart Lures or plugs will work well. Slow down and throw bait if this doesn’t work. Troll at a regular speed. Blackfin (Tuna, Blackfin) are generally mixed in towards the stream as well.

Isle of Palms/Dewees Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – Redfish (Drum, Red) are still schooled up with the cool temperatures. Fish for them during low tide on the flats. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are scattered. They are on any of the points that have moving current. Moving tide is always your best time to fish for them. The surf is slow which is typical for this time of year. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish listed below the report for additional angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – Sheepshead are on the reefs. They are a few miles off the beach. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are starting roughly 60 ft of water. Some of the bigger Sea Bass have been in 80-100 ft. Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater) are being caught in 100-110 ft. Towards the stream, the Wahoo bite is heating up. Blue Water Candy bombs or Cowbell Lures are your best bet to hook them. There have been a few scattered Sailfish (Billfish – Sailfish) but nothing consistent.

February 14, 2017

Isle of Palms/Dewees Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – It’s been a bit slow as of late. There has been a light Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) bite on light artificials. Small paddle tails worked slow is your best bet to hook them. 2-3 inches is best. Once the water warms up we should see the bite increase. Redfish (Drum, Red) are biting on nearshore structure when anglers can avoid the wind and make it out. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish listed below the report for additional angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – Wahoo can be caught offshore. High speed troll with shiny lures in black/red or black/ purple. If you’re Wahoo fishing the Gulf Stream, you can also use cowbells while trolling.

Isle of Palms/Dewees Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – Not a lot has changed lately. The low water temperatures still have the Redfish schooled up. Look for mud flats during the low tide and you’ll find good pockets of Reds (Drum, Red). Soft plastics are working best to hook them. They are picky and haven’t been eating a whole lot with bait being scarce. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are few and far between. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish listed below the report for additional angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – Sheepshead are on the nearshore wrecks. Wahoo have been consistent at the stream. Standard and high speed trolling with dark lures has been productive on the Wahoo.

INSHORE – Redfish (Drum, Red) are the main bite here this week. They may be a bit skittish or hesitant so you’ll have to put some time in. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are still biting. They are smaller but some better sizes are mixed in. Sheepshead and Black Drum (Drum, Black) provide some good angling opportunities at this time of year as well. Isle of Palms/Dewees Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – Redfish (Drum, Red) are schooling as the water temperature drops. You can find schools in shallow water once the sun warms it up. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) seem to be disappearing a bit. Search creek mouths and shorelines to find them. The outgoing tide has been a bit more productive. Redfish have been picky but will take live bait as well as the occasional cut bait. As the water clears you can catch them on artificials easily however they’re still going to be a little picky. Check out the upcoming Shallow Water Fishing Expo January 21-22 at the Omar Shrine Temple for tons of great products and reps! PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish listed below the report for additional angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – Good reports of Wahoo have been caught to 87 lbs. They are consistently larger sizes in 180-200 ft. High speed trolling lures have been the best bet using black, purple and other darker colors. Bottom fish are biting from 100 ft in shallower. We are seeing Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black), Grouper (Grouper, Gag & Grouper, Scamp), Triggerfish (Triggerfish, Gray) and Snapper (Snapper, Vermillion). Past 100 ft we are seeing consistent Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater).

Isle of Palms/Dewees Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – Not a lot has changed into this week. The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Reds (Drum, Red) are still turning up in great numbers! Anglers continue to throw a mix of live bait and artificial lures around the docks and in the creeks. As it cools down the fish are up in holes and on the flats. Once the sun is up you can fish shallower, warmer water. Zman Paddletails, Gulp Shrimp, and Vudu Shrimp have been very successful as of late. Sheepshead will still be on structure taking Fiddler Crab or small Shrimp.

OFFSHORE – Offshore when anglers are able to hit the water the Tuna (Tuna, Blackfin) and Wahoo are still out there although you may have to put some time in to find them. If you are staying a bit closer the bottom bite is great using butterfly jigs. INSHORE – The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Redfish (Drum, Red) are biting well this week. The numbers are great on live bait or Vudu Shrimp. Fish the docks and creeks for the best bite. The flats are productive as well. 2 ft of water is key as the fish are schooled up. Anglers are using a mix of bait and artificial. Zman paddletail gulps and Gulp Shrimp have been very productive. The Sheepshead bite is consistent. Fish the docks and structure for them. Generally Fiddler Crabs are best for them. When we have some continuous cold we should see the bite improve.

OFFSHORE – Wahoo and Blackfin (Tuna, Blackfin) can be caught when anglers are able to get out. The bottomfish have been hot as well. Butterfly jigs, Blue Water Candy or Roscoe Jigs are all working well. Squid and Cigar Minnows are a great baits to use if you prefer that over artificials.

Isle of Palms/Dewees Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) bite has been unbelievable. They are finally turning on with good numbers to 60 and decent sizes. Most are small but there have been some really nice fish caught recently. The Flounder (Flounder, Southern) bite is decent but the Reds (Drum, Red) are confused. They aren’t really tailing during the transition phase. They are schooled up on the flats taking artificials. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish listed below the report for additional angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – The bottom fishing is great this time of year. Anglers are beginning to catch a few good Grouper (Grouper, Gag & Grouper, Scamp) farther out at 70-100 ft of water. All the bottom species are fattening up for the Winter so they will be eating well. Savage Gear Squish jig or a Chicken rig with Squid on it will work well. Farther out at 100 ft and more you may hook some Snowys (Grouper, Snowy).

BAIT REPORT – The Mullet run has pretty much come to an end. There is still some Mullet inshore but most have pushed out. Glass Minnows will be the main bait from here on out.

Isle of Palms/Dewees Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – Anglers are still catching some Flounder (Flounder, Southern) off the beaches using Minnows and Grubs. The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) bite is good but they are definitely in deeper water as the harbor is so warm, and the creek is warmer. Reds (Drum, Red) are still catching in the back however they are a bit slow too. A lot of Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish), Bluefish and Ladyfish are in the harbor. You will have to sort through Sharks (Shark, Bull & Shark, Blacktip) to find Tarpon however the bite is good. This is one of the best bites right now. Sheepshead, Drum (Drum, Black) and Spadefish are consistent. Everything inshore is turning on. Early morning or late evening bites are best. It’s too hot during the day for most fish. The New Shimano Reels – Nasci and CI4 have arrived! Stop in and pick yours up today! PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish listed below the report for additional angling tips and tricks!

Isle of Palms/Dewees Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – With the heat the middle of the day has been tough. The topwater Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) bite is great early in the morning. They are in 4-10 ft of water. Look for structure and moving water. The Redfish (Drum, Red) are holding up under docks because, just like us, they want some shade in this heat. If you are targeting them you can use live Shrimp, Mud Minnows, Carolina rigged with a popping cork. From the beach we have found big Redfish. The Shark (Shark, Blacktip & Shark, Dusky & Shark, Atlantic Sharpnose & Shark, Spinner) have been pushed in with the warm water and are doing well. They are the hottest bite this week. The New Shimano Reels – Nasci and CI4 have arrived! Stop in and pick yours up today! PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish listed below the report for additional angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – The bite on the troll has produced Kingfish (Mackerel, King). Wahoo are scattered towards the ledge. The best bite is in the early morning. Sails (Billfish – Sailfish) and Blue Marlin (Billfish – Marlin, Blue) have also been brought in this week. Vermillions (Snapper, Vermillion) and Black Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are coming off the bottom. Farther out Triggerfish (Triggerfish, Gray), Porgy and Grouper (Grouper, Gag) are all good. The Grouper are a bit scattered.

INSHORE – The Shark (Shark, Blacktip & Shark, Spinner & Shark, Bonnethead & Shark, Atlantic Sharpnose) bite has been great in the surf. We are starting to see more bull Reds (Drum, Red) despite fall being the key season. Plenty of Whiting (Kingfish, Southern) and Croaker are out there. Smaller Drum (Drum, Black) have turned up. Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) are in and just outside the surf with more scattered Kingfish. From the boats anglers can catch Reds along the flats when they are tailing. The early or late Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) bite is great for topwaters but it’s too hot during the day to find them. Artificials will also work in the first or last hour of the day. Live Shrimp and Mud Minnows will work all day. Cut Finger Mullet around the oysters will work well for Reds. The New Shimano Reels – Nasci and CI4 have arrived! Stop in and pick yours up today! Drift baits and drop Squid to find them. Dolphin are scattered and they don’t have a whole lot of size to them. If you find them they are thick so throw a fly or small grubs.

Mostly the early morning to midday bite has been best but topwater lures only working well in the morning. If it’s a cloudier day they will hit surface patterns later midday. Grubs and Vudu Shrimp by Egret are working well for the Trout. Clams have been best for Sheepshead. We expect them to slow down and spread out in the next few weeks.

OFFSHORE – The bite offshore has been great. Wahoo have been hot this week. They have been from 130 to 300 feet zig zagging the ledge. They are strong and the bite is consistent. The bottom is producing some nice Sea Bass, Black.

BAIT REPORT – The water temperature is warming and there are a few rumours of Menhaden showing up. We expect them to heat up soon. This weekend is the Spring Kickoff Sale! Stop in and check them out!

Isle of Palms/Dewees Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Reds (Drum, Red) are still schooled up pretty tight this week. Anglers are using fly rods with soft plastic artificials for the most success. Small Crabs, Shrimp and small bait fish are the best ways to hook them. The low tide has been the best time of day to fish. Isle of Palms/Dewees Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) bite have slowed down which has lasted longer than usual. The water temperature has dropped and they aren’t showing up as much. Reds are schooling up in the low tide flats and if you find a school there are tons of them there. Pinfish, gulp and jerk shads are hooking the best fish along with some savage gear Shrimp. Sheepshead continue to do well so far this week too. Their sizes are fair and the bite is consistent. Most of the bait in this area has moved out or buried into the ground so most anglers are throwing artificials this week.

OFFSHORE – Wahoo and Tuna, Blackfin were on the ledge prior to the recent wind conditions and we expect they are still there and in great sizes. Anglers have had a difficult time getting out there so far this week however we hope to have some reports for the weekend.

Isle of Palms/Dewees Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – There are some Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Reds (Drum, Red) hitting in the creeks this week. Live bait under a popping cork has produced the best results with Shrimp in particular. The high outgoing tide is the primary time to fish for most anglers as the bite has been great.

OFFSHORE – The main focus this week has been on the Wahoo bite about 45 miles out. They have been catching some really nice fish too. There have also been a few spotty Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater) but they have been outstanding in size. Tuna, Blackfin have been turning up closer to the bottom for anglers pulling Ballyhoo or plugs in dark colors such as purple or black. Isle of Palms/Dewees Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – There has been a solid Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) bite the past few days. They are going nuts for live Shrimp. Some anglers are using the artificial alternatives such as Vudu Shrimp or similar and finding them to be somewhat productive as well. Free lining on the moving tide or hanging off bottom with a popping cork is coming up with the best results so far. High tide is reported to be the best time to fish them while low tide is better for the strong Red (Drum, Red) bite. There are also a few reports of Flounder (Flounder, Southern & Flounder, Summer (Fluke)) still biting. They are not on fire this week however there are still a few out there. Sheepshead bite has been excellent so far as anglers can easily find them around bridges and structures. Some have been coming in from 4-8 lbs, especially around the jetties and nearshore wrecks. They seem to be just about everywhere. The water is still warm so the fish seem to be be mixed up.

OFFSHORE – The bite offshore has been pretty good so far this week. Wahoo and Tuna, Blackfin are hitting around the 150-180 ft areas. Anglers have been trolling around the ledges pulling Ballyhoo for the best bite. There have also been great reports of Snapper, Vermillion and Triggerfish (Triggerfish, Ocean) off the bottom. Anglers are hitting their limits at 100-120 ft of water.

BAIT REPORT – So far there are no reports of bait running this week.

Isle of Palms/Dewees Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are moving in the deeper water nearshore this week. This has not stopped the catch at all. Artificials have been the choice of most anglers so far in mostly zman baits. 3 inch Minnow Zs, which is a standard 3 inch paddle tail, on a trout eye jig head and trout tricks have produced the best results. The blue glimmer color is a preference this week. There have also been reports of a few Reds (Drum, Red) turning up on fresh Shrimp as well.

OFFSHORE – There have still been a few anglers heading to the offshore this week. They have been seeing some Snapper, Vermillion come in along with some Grouper, Gags. Anglers should take caution as Grouper will be closing soon so make sure to check your local regulations. 100 ft of water has been the key spot to hook either of these species using chunks of Squid or a piece of cut fish such as Porgy.

BAIT REPORT – There is very minimal bait running at this time. There have been some Shrimp spotted however they are not running thick this week. Hey Ladies! Head down to Haddrell’s Point Tackle & Supply on December 14th from 6pm for an awesome ladies night!!

Isle of Palms/Dewees Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) bite has picked up extremely well this week. They are on fire and most anglers are targeting them. Some sources have reported up to 30 fish a trip. They have been mixed sizes however all hitting artificial Shrimp under a cork. DOA or Vudu are producing great results and are the primary choice of fishermen this week. The water temperature continues to fluctuate so the bigger fish have not completely moved in yet. Sizes are ranging mostly from 13-18 inches, but they are starting to get fat! The Redfish (Drum, Red) bite has been pretty good as well. There have also been reports of Albies (Bonito, Little Tunny) schooled up on the beach. The birds are giving away their hiding spots this week. Jack, Amberjack Greater have had a spotty bite this week on the nearshore reefs.

OFFSHORE – There has been a surprising amount of action offshore now that the weather has begun to finally clear up. Reports have come in of a great amount of Wahoo weighing up to 70 lbs. There has been a decent Billfish – Sailfish bite as well although not a lot of people have made it out to fish them. Anglers will have to travel to the ledge at roughly 40-55 miles to hook either of these fish. Slow trolling with planers has been the best method for Wahoo. A Fathom under an 8 oz. skirt has also produced great results. With the improving weather the bite is expected to pick up even further this week.

BAIT REPORT – There are no reports of bait this week.

Isle of Palms/Dewees Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – Seatrout, Spotted have been thick in the creeks and backwater hitting Zman plastics, Vudu Shrimp and DOA Shrimp under a cork. There are some in the harbor as well however most anglers have been sticking to the backwater. The surf has produced some big Reds (Drum, Red) that are hitting bait such as live Finger Mullet or cut Mullet. The closer wrecks are also host to some fish. Large Sheepshead have been hiding around these and similar structures waiting for some live bait to swim by.

OFFSHORE – There is a good King (Mackerel, King) bite in the deeper water from 10-12 miles out, right at the tip of the rocks. Anglers are looking for the birds as they have been giving their location away. Trolling with skirted Ballyhoo has given the best results in dark colors such as black and red or black and purple. Fishermen continue to report a Wahoo bite at 120-180 ft of water however this is beginning to slow down.

BAIT REPORT – There continues to be a thick run of Finger Mullet in this area lately. Check out Haddrell’s Point Tackle & Supply’s upcoming seminars and events. See website for more details.

Smaller Jerk shads and paddle tails are also working.

OFFSHORE – The offshore bite has had a lot of action this past week but is beginning to slow down due to unfavorable weather conditions. Wahoo that are still out there are hitting well. There was even a report of some Dolphin caught recently. The King (Mackerel, King) bite has been sporadic however anglers are still hitting them in the deeper water. Bottom fishing has been fantastic and never really seems to be slow, even throughout the winter. Grouper (Grouper, Gag & Grouper, Scamp) have been taking live squid around the bottom at the 100 ft. mark, but most of the scamp have been a little farther out at 150-200ft.
