Homosassa Fishing Report

INSHORE – Despite the wind anglers are still able to make it on the water during weather windows this week. Redfish and Trout are the usual contenders making an appearance for anglers so far. Reds are schooled up, especially towards Sarasota, but are becoming more scattered once we reach Tampa. Searching shallower water will be the key to finding them. The Trout on the other hand seem to be just about everywhere and ready to take a live Shrimp or an artificial such as MirrOlure. Snook are consistent into this week. Passes and beaches are holding the best sizes. There are a few Pompano that may be caught as bycatches on the beaches. They aren’t picky in terms of what they are eating, so anglers heading out shouldn’t have a problem loading up. Structure is holding the typical Snapper and Sheepshead up to 15 miles out. This comes as no surprise to most anglers. Beyond this Kings are beginning to make their way in close and should progress on this trail throughout the season.

OFFSHORE – The weather has made fishing tough into this week however when anglers are able to make it offshore they are finding a decent bite of typical, seasonal fish. The bottom bite is producing Grouper (don’t forget to check your Pro Angler App for updated regulations) and Snapper beginning in 30 feet of water. There hasn’t been many anglers heading farther offshore however Kings, Spanish and Cobia are a bit more accessible for anglers this week. Searching the causeway and trolling live bait has been the ticket to hook Kings up to 20 pounds out of Clearwater. The farther out you can go the better the sizes will be however there are a few smokers mixed in the bunch. You’ll find the Spanish are schooled up so when you find one you’ll likely find many. If you find anglers are chumming, they are likely targeting Cobia in areas like Sarasota. A bit of chum and some live bait is a killer combination to land them from the reefs. We hope to see these fish fire up once conditions are improved.

INSHORE – The bite is fairly typical for this time of year. On the flats we are seeing some Cobia. They have been caught around Anclote. Small Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are swimming with few keepers. Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) are on the flats. Snook (Snook, Common) and Redfish (Drum, Red) are inshore.

OFFSHORE – There is still some decent action offshore this week. Grunts (Grunt, White) and Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are swimming near shore. Farther out the Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater) and keeper Red Grouper (Grouper, Red) have been caught. Sharks are beginning to move in.

BAIT REPORT – There is plenty of Whitebait around.

Homosassa Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Pompano bite is really hot right now along the jetties of John’s Pass and the beaches however it is a bit scattered towards Sarasota and thicker towards Clearwater. These Pompano are great eating too, and bite best in the early morning or just before dark. The Snook action has been hit and miss, they really fire up but then as quickly as they start it ends. We’ve seen some monsters caught inside the passes along the beaches. The Mackerel have made their way into the bay and around bridges.
Trout, Snook, Tarpon and Redfish are beginning to get fat again. Reds can be found chasing bait around mouths of rivers and particularly in Longboat taking Shrimp. Trout are more preferring artificials such as MirrOdines, Vudu Shrimp and DOA Shrimp. Sheepshead and Drum have been caught on structure taking Fiddler Crabs or Shrimp on a knocker rig.

OFFSHORE – There is something to catch just about everywhere offshore this week. From 50-70 feet offshore there have been great catches of both Kings and Cobia. We are seeing them consistently caught from Sarasota to Homosassa.
On the bottom, the Grouper and Snapper are doing extremely well, although keep in mind what regulations are in place for them. Grouper can be targeted with Shrimp or Squid while Snapper prefer Sardines or Whitebait while chumming heavy. Ajs are providing a great catch and release bite for anglers out for some fun.

Homosassa Fishing Report

INSHORE – Nothing is out of the ordinary so far this week. Although the bite is typical we can’t argue with how good it’s been. As Snook are swimming the rivers anglers are targeting them under the lights and also around passes. Keep an eye out as they will make their way to the beaches very soon in the Clearwater area.
Redfish and Trout are almost a never-fail catch. Slot Reds are loving areas such as Terra Ceia or around spoil islands. Trout are opposingly in deeper waters around edges of the grass flats, spoil islands and occasionally running flats on the beach for warm water pockets. The occasional Pompano and Spanish Mackerel are also on the beaches.

OFFSHORE – The variety of fish is improving this week. Anglers are finding fish nearshore, offshore on the bottom, just about everywhere! If you can find a weather window to head farther offshore the Tuna bite is turning on. Blackfin can be found roughly 30 miles out of Sarasota while if we look to St. Petersburg the Yellowfin are active farther on the long range overnight trips. Moving closer in, the Kings are biting well. A few of them can be caught mixed in with offshore Tuna however most of them are more towards the shipping channel areas chasing live bait. Of course, Cobia aren’t far behind as they are even closer holding up on nearshore wrecks and reefs.
The typical bottom bite is nothing new for anglers in the area. Snapper are beginning to gear up for an aggressive feeding coming very soon. The sizes are expected to be great. Grouper and Hogfish are consistently turning up while specifically targeting them, especially in the Clearwater area. Scattered Sea Bass and Grunts may be caught as well.

Homosassa Fishing Report

INSHORE – Snook have a been a little difficult to find in keeper sizes. There has been a lot of catch and release angling from Sarasota up in to Tampa. Try to find moving water and fish to structure just before high or low tide as they move out to feed. Bluefish, Ladyfish and Jacks have been a common bycatch out of the Sarasota area. Trout fishing has been just ok. If you were to pick only one place to Trout fish this week, you might best head to Sarasota where you will also have the opportunity to hook some Flounder while fishing with MirrOlures oddly enough. Redfish have been steady across Florida’s Central West coast. They are especially moving well down the river with Snook near Clearwater and caught or the oyster bars up in Homosassa. Tarpon have been heating up in Tampa Bay. Cobia anglers out of Hudson have been catching fish on the Flats.

OFFSHORE – We’re still waiting for King Mackerel to show up here. There is a decent Grouper and Snapper bite on the days you can get out around 10 miles. Best baits to take this week are Sardines and Squid. The Grouper off of Clearwater have been particular to Pinfish. There is also a worthwhile amount of Amberjack on structure off of Hudson.

Crystal River Fishing Report

INSHORE – Redfish and Trout have been fishing well on grassy flats in the morning or incoming tide. The Redfish have really been coming out of the creeks taking Shrimp, Minnows or gulp on jig heads. Livetarget scaled Sardines in Ghost Amber color has been working well to hook them. Trolling lures such as gold/orange threadfins or Rapala X Raps in a subsurface Walker with a single hook are working well too. Whitebait will work well as the temperature creeps up. Lighter colors such as white or pink are also key to catching them.

OFFSHORE – There aren’t a lot of species open to harvest but you can find a decent mix of bottom fishing. Sheepshead have continued to bite on the nearshore reefs and wrecks. As you head further offshore you will start to find some Sea Bass and some catch and release Grouper and Snapper. The Amberjack bite has been the focus of most offshore trips, you’ll just have to head past 60 feet of water for decent fish.

Homosassa Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Snook bite has been HOT HOT HOT just about everywhere through Florida’s Central-West coast. Tide direction hasn’t affected the bite, just as long as there’s moving water. There will also be Redfish mixed in with the Snook. Redfish have been a little sporadic to the south, they improve around the west side of Tampa on Greenbacks or cut bait such as Pinfish. You can find them schooled up on both low tide and high tide. Trout fishing has been fairly decent through the day. There has even been a lot of Trout taken on Rapala Topwaters. Pompano anglers have been finding most of their action coming from sandbars in Tampa Bay while throwing jigs.

OFFSHORE – You will have to head pretty deep to find any sizeable Red Grouper right now, starting in at least 150 feet of water. Amberjack have been hauled off of bottom structure much closer in while Sheepshead have been on the nearshore structures. There has been a lot of Kingfish around St. Petersburg, we expect this to pick up as the warmer weather comes.

Crystal River Fishing Report

INSHORE – Things are a bit quiet this week. Unsurprisingly the Trout are providing the most consistent bite from Cedar Key to Apalachee Bay. The numbers are decent although haven’t fired up quite yet. Towards Suwanee a majority of the fish are catch and release with a handful of slot sizes mixed in. Towards Apalachee Bay we are seeing a better mix. Fish in shallow to find them using artificials such as Pink Shine Gulp or Strike First Golden Brim.
Sheepshead are providing scattered action on structure this week. Shallow rocks are also holding Tautog and Grunts.
Redfish are transitioning into their Spring patterns this week as they move to oyster bars, mouths of the rivers, tidal creeks and shorelines. Artificials are working well to hook them. Head out in the late morning or early afternoon for the best bite. If you decide to mix things up and head a bit farther off the shore don’t be surprised to run into a few Flounder and Black Sea Bass.

Homosassa Fishing Report

INSHORE – Despite the weather it seems we can almost always hook a few nice Redfish and Trout. The Redfish are still a bit scattered at this point but if you put some time in anglers should be able to find a few decent fish. Live bait has been the ticket to catch them, with a select few artificials including Spoons and soft plastics in Shrimp patterns working well. Trout can be found in any of the shallower areas from Sarasota all the way down to Homosassa.
Snook are fairly consistent this week as well. They seem to be taking just about everything, however live bait at night is producing well. Sheepshead are beginning to really fire up on structure as usual. In St. Petersburg there are a few reports of Flounder mixed in. They are preferring live bait.
On the surf anglers are finding Pompano here and there.

OFFSHORE – Everything is in close this week. Blackfin Tuna are holding up in the deeper Springs this week and can be caught trolling with artificials. On the bottom the Amberjack and Grouper are biting in the same depths. Ajs have had the most consistent bite down the coast this week. As usual, structure is the best place to search for them.
A bit closer in we are finding a productive bite of Snapper, Hogfish and Grunts. The variety of Snapper include Muttons, Lanes and Mangroves. The numbers were great prior to the recent weather and we expect they should pick back up. When anglers can make it farther offshore the bite of Vermilion and Yellowtail Snapper are putting up a good fight.

Homosassa / Crystal River Fishing Report

INSHORE – From inside Tampa Bay out to John’s Pass there is a good Sheepshead bite. Trout are found near inshore troughs during low tides on Shrimp or Greenbacks fished under a popping cork. The best reports on Snook have come from Sarasota over to St. Petersburg. Live baits such as Pinfish or Shrimp will work well to hook them. Inshore anglers targeting Redfish have had the most success off of docks in the rivers, oyster beds throughout intracoastal waterways. The flats around New Port Richey as well as up near Homosassa will provide anglers with a decent Redfish bite on cut bait and Pinfish.
It’s worth making the trip to Sarasota as the Skyway bridge has been offering up some Cobia.

OFFSHORE – The gulf of Mexico has been kind to offshore boats this week. Amberjack have been fishing well on wrecks for anyone using Sardines. If you are headed out of St. Pete’s, target wrecks in 100 ft of water. Out of New Port Richey you will want to be fishing in 50-80 ft. There will also be an assortment of Grouper and Snapper here as well. Yellowtail Snapper have been biting well on structure in the 30 mile range.
From 7-15 miles, anglers in this region can expect to find Hogfish as well as some small Grouper and Snapper. Triggerfish are spread out on reefs and wrecks as you fish your way into the gulf. Keep in mind that they are catch and release at this time. Nearshore trolling with soft plastics has been productive for King Mackerel.

A few Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) have been caught. Most are small but a few decent sizes are showing up. Live Shrimp or dark Plastics are your best bet to hook them. INSHORE – Redfish (Drum, Red) are still great in Mason Creek and St. Martin’s River. Cut Mullet is still the key to catching them. INSHORE – Things have been slow although the Sheepshead are firing up in 12-15 ft. Good Redfish (Drum, Red) are still being caught. They are around the outer islands. It’s been a bit warmer again so they have moved out just a bit. Cut Mullet, Mud Minnows and Pinfish are the baits of choice. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are good but have moved out to the shallow flats again. Nice fish are around the boundary stakes and the bird rack area. Live Shrimp and dark colored jigs are key. INSHORE – The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) bite has been strong anywhere from 3-7 ft of water using a popping cork with an artificial. The Redfish (Drum, Red) bite is excellent. They are catching them from the oyster bars and rocky points using live Shrimp and cut bait. Gags (Grouper, Gag) are strong from 7-30 ft of water on the troll or bottom fishing. Threadfin herring, Sardine or live Pinfish are all working for baits. Sheepshead are beginning to move into the rock piles and taking live Shrimp. Thanks for another great year anglers! Homosassa / Crystal River Fishing Report

INSHORE – Nice Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are showing up and moving into the creeks. Shrimp is the bait of choice. Dark plastic artificials are also productive. Brown, watermelon red and Bourbon have been key colors. Redfish (Drum, Red) are still biting well. They prefer cut bait, mud minnows, cut Pinfish and cut Finger Mullet. Gold Spoons are the best artificial to throw this week. There are some fish up in the big river itself. Schools have moved up in there and are being caught around the upper part around the springs mixed with Mangroves (Snapper, Gray). They are running thick. MirrOdines are catching Snook (Snook, Common). Sheepshead are showing on the shallow rocks. They are taking live shrimp on a knocker rig or split shot rig. Wishing you a Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays from the Pro Angler Team!

INSHORE – Not much has changed this week. Grouper (Grouper, Gag) are biting well. There are likely more keeper sizes inside 30 ft. Anywhere from 9-15 ft are best. Trolling cut Threadfin on a knocker rig or a 7/O hook. Anglers are also casting plugs in the shallow water rocks for Grouper. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are picking up. Redfish (Drum, Red) are still inland closer to the bay. MirrOlures are working well to hook them. Snook (Snook, Common) are great for catch and release fishing. Sheepshead have arrived and are taking Fiddler Crabs or small Shrimp anywhere there is structure.

Homosassa / Crystal River Fishing Report

INSHORE – It’s been a bit slow however the Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are picking up well on the grass flats with rocky and sandy bottoms. DOA Jerk baits or MirrOlures and Unfair Lures are working well to hook them. Redfish (Drum, Red) have moved to the inland waters closer to the bay taking MirrOlures and Unfair lures as well. Now that Snook (Snook, Common) season is over they are conveniently providing a great catch and release bite. Spoolteks are doing well in any color. Sheepshead are moving in. They are on structure in 5-7 ft of water. Small Shrimp or Fiddler Crabs are doing well to hook them. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below for additional tips and tricks!

Homosassa / Crystal River Fishing Report

INSHORE – There hasn’t been a lot of change in the bite into this week. Mangroves (Snapper, Gray) continue to swim in the rivers. Search the deep holes to find them using Shrimp. Head to rocky areas such as Hell’s Gate and Wally’s Point for the best sizes. Redfish (Drum, Red) are consistent into this week. Search the outer islands to find them. Mullet, Pinfish and gold Spoons will be the best methods to hook Reds. The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) bite has also continued. They are still in the pockets and potholes of the creeks. Deeper water will be the place to look. Cast Shrimp and light colored jigs. White or light pink are your best colors. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below for additional tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – We continue to see Grouper (Grouper, Gag) biting offshore. They are in roughly 30-35 ft and haven’t moved much. You can still hook them using Sardine or Herring, as long as it gets right down to the bottom. If you are targeting them on the troll you will need to go a bit shallower to 20-25 ft. Rapala 18 Series is going to be the key.

INSHORE – Good Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are turning up in the creeks this week. Nice fish are swimming the pockets and potholes with deeper water throughout the inside creeks. Shrimp and light colored jigs are your best bet with the water temperature down. Plastics have gone to light colors such as white or light pink. Redfish (Drum, Red) are steady around the outer band of islands. This area is holding the best fish taking cut Mullet, Pinfish and Gold Spoons. Nice Mangroves (Snapper, Gray) are in the rivers taking Shrimp in the deep holes. Rocky areas such as Hell’s Gate and Wally’s Point are holding the best fish.

OFFSHORE – There has been a few good Grouper (Grouper, Gag) reports in 30-35 ft of water. They are taking Sardines and Herring on the bottom. Anglers are also trolling for them in 20-25 ft using Rapalas, 18 Series has been most productive.

Homosassa / Crystal River Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) bite is really strong here to Chassahowitzka in 3-4 ft of water. Concentrate in the upcoming weeks on the creek mouths that have rock grass. If you float a medium to small Pinfish on a 3 ft leader with a popping cork you can do really well. The turn of the tide and outgoing tide is best. You will find Redfish (Drum, Red) mixed in. The spawn of the Sheepshead have come into the nearshore rocks about 10 miles out. There are Grouper (Grouper, Gag) and key west Grunt (Grunt, White) here too. They are taking Shrimp, small Pinfish and cut Mullet. Troll the hard rock ledge with Stretch lures for Grouper in 15-20 ft. INSHORE – There are some great Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) reports as of late. The bite is picking up close to the mouth of the river in 3-5 ft and around the boundary stakes. Shrimp is the predominant bait. Artificials and dark jigs are also working well. Redfish (Drum, Red) are great around the outer islands on cut Mullet and gold spoons. Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) are swimming 8-12 ft of water. Silver spoons or bright jigs will hook them. Clear or chartreuse with a silver flake is best. Find a moving tide to find them. OFFSHORE – Anglers are doing well on shallow water Grouper (Grouper, Gag) from 8-15 miles off. Anglers are catching them trolling stretch 20s, 30s, or Rapalas. Hit the hard bottom to find them. If you find you are marking fish but not getting bit, sink a live Pinfish on heavy Grouper gear or on a Tarpon rod. Over the next couple weeks we expect to see Sheepshead show up out there. Key West Grunt (Grunt, White) and Cobia will make an appearance with the occasional Mangrove Snapper (Snapper, Gray).

BAIT REPORT – Mullet are running.

Homosassa / Crystal River Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Redfish (Drum, Red) bite is in full force this week around the Spoil Island and Anclote area. Howard Park all the way to Brasher Park are holding big schools of Redfish on the flats. Cut Pinfish on the bottom, Scaled Sardine or Shrimp and Pinfish are working well to hook them. Artificials in the early morning using Spooks in Silver or Gulp on a jighead work well. The Snook (Snook, Common) bite is still on. They are no longer on the island or beaches spawning, they are in the mouths to halfway up the river. Scaled Sardines or Finger Mullet are great along with Jerk Shads. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below for additional tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – The water temperatures are cooling down and the Kings (Mackerel, King) have moved in! A slow trolled Blue runner, Threadfin or Scaled Sardine will work well. You can also throw anything shiny. Trolling a Spoon on number two or three planer will be best. With the opening of Stone Crab the Tripletail are all over the Crab Trap Buoys. Cut Bait, Shrimp or artificial Shrimp will work at the buoys. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish listed below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

INSHORE – The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) bite is great in 7 ft of water using artificials with a popping cork. They seem to be taking any color this week. The incoming tide is the best time to fish. Inshore the Redfish (Drum, Red) bite has been good on cut bait or live Shrimp.

OFFSHORE – The Grouper (Grouper, Gag & Grouper, Red) are beginning to turn on from 15-50 ft using Threadfin Herring, Sardines or live Pinfish.

BAIT REPORT – There’s still quite the mix of bait this week.

Homosassa / Crystal River Fishing Report

INSHORE – Redfishing (Drum, Red) is still really good on the outer islands using cut Mullet. The bite is better on the outgoing tide however it’s difficult to get into the shallows unless you are on the last part of the incoming or outgoing tide. When you can get there, the bite is good. We are starting to see Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) show up and everyday is better. They are outside St. Martin’s Keys in 4-6 ft of water. They increase as the temperature cools.

OFFSHORE – There are a few reports of Grouper (Grouper, Gag) in 50-60 ft of water. This is the most consistent area. Some are closer in, around 30 ft and there were still some keepers there as well. The beginning of the best part of Grouper season is when anglers start soaking their Crab traps.

BAIT REPORT – There are plenty of Shrimp and Pinfish in the area lately.

INSHORE – The bite has been good on the Reds (Drum, Red). They are hot this week. Search the grass flats on the incoming or outgoing tide as they follow the baitfish. Live Shrimp and Pinfish will hook them. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are taking Gulp Shrimp Carolina Rigged. They are swimming the same area. Popping corks will work too. Search 5-7 ft of water to find them.

OFFSHORE – Grouper (Grouper, Gag) are biting well. They are spread out from 15-50 ft of water on rocks. They are taking Threadfin Herring and Sardines

BAIT REPORT – There’s good amounts of Mullet in the area.

INSHORE – Hot Redfish (Drum, Red) are biting this week. Live Shrimp and cut Mullet are the baits of choice around the outer islands. Good Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) fishing is turning on. They are showing up in the shallow flats outside the keys and around the boundary area. Shrimp on an equalizer or a dark colored plastic is your best bet. A few Mackerel (Mackerel, Spanish) are beginning to show up. They are doing well. There hasn’t been any good reports from offshore as anglers are just beginning to get back on the water. The water is still muddy farther out. We hope to see conditions clear up soon.

Homosassa / Crystal River Fishing Report

INSHORE – The current weather system is expected to change the fishing patterns quite a bit. The fresh water is going to push the Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) down as they don’t like a lower salinity. The Redfish (Drum, Red) will probably jump up into the bushes on high tides. Target them like you would any other day but you’ll need clean water. If you find Mullet that’s going to mean the water a little cleaner. Usually the Whitebait will get pushed to the deeper parts of the flats and near range markers. If they leave completely , don’t worry as they’ll come back in a couple of days. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – With this system pushing through most of Florida, we expect a lot of wind and tough conditions. Most of the fishing from last week should fire back up once the storm passes. Expect to see the rainfall cool off inshore waters. This will help some of the fish that prefer cooler conditions. Stay informed on all the coming weather systems using your Pro Angler App!

INSHORE – Redfish (Drum, Red) are biting well around the outer islands. Cut Mullet or Cut Pinfish will do the trick. Gold Spoons have also been producing good fish. They are biting on the moving tide while fishing the points of the islands. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) fishing is good in 8-10 ft of water or better. Most of the bigger Trout are still out deeper. Shrimp on a jig with dark colors will be the best setup.

OFFSHORE – 30 ft of water is key for the good Mangrove (Snapper, Gray) bite. Gags (Grouper, Gag) are best around 50 ft of water.

INSHORE – Anglers are still scalloping this week. They are from 5-7 ft of water or anywhere a mile North or South of the scallop wreck. The good, incoming tide is producing lots of Redfish (Drum, Red) on any of the Western facing points that have Mullet. The points and Oyster bars are hot. Cut Pinfish or live Pinfish under corks works well right now. You can also try a live Pinfish hooked through the tail. The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are actually showing up a bit more. They are decent so far on the good, outgoing tide in any of the creek mouths. The nearshore Grouper (Grouper, Gag) are biting in 15-20 ft of water. Look for structure as they heat up towards October. Cut bait, Mullet and Pinfish are the baits of choice lately. Nice Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are in deep water up to 12 ft. Look for the moving tide and look for the pockets. Everything is typical of the season.

OFFSHORE – The Grouper bite is good but anglers are in almost 50 ft to find decent fish. Gags (Grouper, Gag) are closer in while the Reds (Grouper, Red) are close to 80 ft. Pinfish, Threadfins and Sardines are the best bait to hook them. Nice Mangrove Snapper (Snapper, Gray) are mixed in.

The more people, the easier the limit, especially mid season. Target them on low tides. The inshore bite has still been producing good Redfish (Drum, Red) on cut Mullet, cut Pinfish or live Pinfish. Look for a good incoming tide or the beginning of a good outgoing tide. The nearshore rock piles are holding Key West Grunt (Grunt, White), Seatrout (Seatrout, Spotted), Black Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) and Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish). INSHORE – Anglers are still catching Redfish (Drum, Red) on the incoming tide throughout the Western point from Mason Creek up to Ozello. Redfish (Drum, Red) are tough in the heat of the summer. Get into the water before it heats up. Fresh, clean, moving water with Mullet will be what you are looking for. A freelined Pinfish hooked in the back on a 1-2/0 circle hook with a Mullet or cut Pinfish will usually catch them. You may have to move around but when you find them you’ll find a bunch. Tarpon are Southwest of Chassahowitzka Point on the flats. Get in front of them with large Pinfish but anglers are fly fishing for them as well. Scallop fishing begins at the end of the month so start booking your trips now!

OFFSHORE – Most days anglers are on the nearshore rocks from Bayport to Homosassa Bay 10-15 miles out. There are big rock boulders and there are some wrecks out there too. There are some Gags (Grouper, Gag) in this area but the big sizes are about 40 miles out. Chumming with large Shrimp or cut Bait is best. Key West Grunt (Grunt, White) are on the rocks. Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish), Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Bluefish are out there too. Sharks (Shark, Bull & Shark, Blacktip) and the occasional Cobia can be hooked as well. Small Pinfish on 3-4 ft of 24 lb fluorocarbon leader with a popping cork has worked well hooked through the nose. A quarter oz jig head on 3-4 ft of 24 lb fluorocarbon with a DOA paddle tail is a great artificial alternative. Pink/white or avocado glitter have been the best colors. Pop them slow on the bottom during a good incoming or outgoing tide. Mixed in the same water are some Cobia, so be prepared to hook them. Redfishing (Drum, Red) has been phenomenal around the mouth of the creeks, outer islands and St. Martin’s Keys. A lot of Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) and Cobia have moved in as well. Cobia are starting to show up on the Rays (Stingray, Atlantic) however the recent cold front may change things. Blue water Bait & Tackle is now a Loomis dealer! Homosassa / Crystal River Fishing Report

INSHORE – The focus has been on Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) this week. They are from Mangrove Point in Crystal river to Homosassa Bay. A popping cork and a quarter oz jighead with a Little John in Bourbon will work best. A small to medium Pinfish will also be productive. The fish are thick and great sizes so far. Tripletail are hanging out around the Crab pots. When the tide turns in we are seeing some great Redfish (Drum, Red) in the Mullet schools. You won’t catch a bunch of them, maybe 3-4 at a time.

OFFSHORE – Can you believe it? Spring has sprung! Great news because the water is getting warmer, the fish are moving in and the Spring bite has begun! As usual during this time of year we still have some pretty strong winds. Despite that, the days that you can get out the fishing is amazingly hot. Even though they are late, more and more bait fish have arrived and you know what that means the mack daddy fish have moved in as well. So, be ready to capitalize and catch those baits as they are seen around your boat or cloud out on your bottom machine. The Smoker Kingfish (Mackerel, King) are here and the Cobia are just starting to show up. The other day we landed a 50 pound Kingfish and have seen and caught many more in the area. We are throwing back 30-40 Gag Grouper (Grouper, Gag) and another 30-40 Red Snapper (Snapper, Vermillion) a day when fishing in 50-65′ of water. The Big Red Grouper (Grouper, Red) have also moved into that depth and are living up to their nickname of ‘Fire Trucks’ because that is how their power feels when you’re reeling them in! The fish box continues to overflow with a nice combination of species including Mangrove Snapper (Snapper, Gray). 30-45′ of water has been producing a lot of Gags but not as many Red Grouper. The only way to describe the Grunt (Grunt, White) bite is that the Snapper have pushed them off of their rocks in deeper water and they are being caught by the dozens and dozens, so get your muscles tuned up! Fishing in on and it is only going to get better. Today we FINALLY received the official word from National Marine Fisheries! They say that Gag Grouper open June 1st and will stay open through the rest of the year. That gives us two more months of harvesting. Their size limit has also gone up to 24 inch so please make a note of that when you go out. They are no longer 22 inch, they are now 24 inch, paste that to your console! All baits are working well, and the bigger fish are hitting the larger live baits. Make sure your coolers and/or fish boxes are big, iced down and ready to roll! I wish you tight lines and bent rods! INSHORE – A lot of Trout (Seatrout, Spotted)l, Redfish (Drum, Red), and Cobia are being caught this week. Generally live or artificial Shrimp is a great bait to catch them on. The bite is hot and anglers are having no trouble hooking a few fish this week. Cobia have been in around 12 ft this week.

OFFSHORE – Kings (Mackerel, King) are in roughly 40 ft of water and just starting to show up this week. We are also seeing a hot Tripletail bite for anglers targeting them. The sizes are good for both fish so far and we expect to see this continue into the weekend.

Homosassa / Crystal River Fishing Report

INSHORE – The bite in this area is off the charts this week. Anglers are limiting out on Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) with lots of over sized fish being caught as well. The sizes are huge. Bomber Saltwater Extreme poppers with a small Pinfish on a circle hook is the best setup. Drifting the creek mouths and a quarter mile out on the flats in front of the creeks is best. They are loaded up on the change of the tide so focus on the rock grass, the point and on the mouths of the creek. It’s the best bite anglers have seen lately. When the tide creeps back in anglers can free line big Shrimp, cut Pinfish, cut Ladyfish or even a popping cork with a pinfish or big Shrimp to find them. Casting it right into the Mullet will find some great fish. They are holding up from the Point to St. Martin’s Keys. You may find some really nice Redfish (Drum, Red) as well. There are also some Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) mixed in as well so if you are finding yourself getting cut off throw a long shanked hook. Tides are a bit slow this week so the best bite will be in the morning. We expect things to slow down, especially in the afternoon however next week should pick back up as the moon changes.

INSHORE – Redfishing has been great around the outer island this week. Shrimp, mud Minnows and Gold Spoons are working well. Trout have shown up in the flats throughout 3-6 ft and the sizes are great. As long as you find moving tide you’ll find a good bite. Spanish are around the bird rack area West of marker 2 where they are schooled up. Cobia have moved in and while the sizes aren’t huge yet they are coming. Anglers are drifting Mackerel and chumming to get them. They are scattered about as of yet.

OFFSHORE – Anglers offshore are catching Grunts (Grunt, White) and Snapper (Snapper, Mangrove). They are also targeting Grouper (Grouper, Red) as well however there’s a bunch of Groupers mixed in that you’ll have to sort through. They are in about 40-45 ft of water.

INSHORE – Mackerel (Mackerel, Spanish) are hitting well this week on Shrimp and Pinfish anywhere from St Martin Keys to the Chasawiska Point. They are catching them at the same time as Trout. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are anywhere from 3-5 ft of water and can be caught on a popping cork with a big live Shrimp or medium and small Pinfish. Cowbaits on a quarter oz jighead or a jig head under a popping cork are working as well. Dark colors like root beer with gold fleck seem to really productive. Move up with the tide to catch them. 2/O circle hook in the back of a Pinfish thrown right in the middle of a Mullet school will definitely hook you a Trout, especially if you are halfway through the incoming tide. Anglers are catching their limits this week.

BAIT REPORT – Mullet schools are showing up.

Homosassa / Crystal River Fishing Report

INSHORE – The inshore has been slammed this week and it’s great. Redfish (Drum, Red), Snook (Snook, Common) and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are all being caught on a half day trip. They are using mirrodines to get the big sizes. Working the edges of the oyster beds, rock grass, and creek mouths will be productive. Small Pinfish on a popping cork are also working well. Redfish are moving in with the Mullet so if you freeline a Pinfish in the back with a circle hook on a 30 lb fluorocarbon leader into a mullet school, you will find them. Spring has sprung!

Homosassa / Crystal River Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Spring is in the air! And you know what that means, water temps and fish are both starting to rise. The last couple of trips the water was still pretty chilly (around 60 degrees). But after this FANTASTIC week of warm temperatures we’re hoping to SMACK ‘EM even worse the next time we go out! Currently, in 50-65 feet of water, the Snapper, Red bite has been has been the stuff of dreams. We’re catching an unbelievable 30 to 60 Red Snapper a day which is heartbreaking to the palate but really fun action (they open June 1st along with Grouper, Gag). The Gag Grouper are also showing up and they are very light colored. As you know, that means they have just arrived to our type of bottom and have not yet adapted to our camouflage. The Red Grouper (Grouper, Red), as always, are more difficult to find in the shallower waters but that will change as the water gets warmer. The Grunt, White and Sea Bass, Black are still bringing consistent quantities and the rocks from 25 to 40 feet of water seem to be holding a lot of very nice Sheepshead. If you haven’t caught or eaten one before they are great fun to catch as well as a light, white, tasty treat. We can’t wait to see what the next few weeks will bring. So get ready men and ladies…it’s time to Scarfish!

INSHORE – The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) bite is on and they are up to 20 inches. They are being caught left and right up to 40 Trout per day. The Reds (Drum, Red) are heating up with the water. They are more prominent during the incoming tide. Sheepshead have also been found in this area. Everything is in typical early Spring pattern at this point so anglers are expecting a great Tarpon season coming up in April. INSHORE – There are a lot of Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) being caught on the inside. The early morning bite has been hot for them. The Sheepshead have been great in the gulf and the humps as well as around structure. This is as far as anglers are heading this week to take advantage of the bite.

Homosassa / Crystal River Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Old Man Winter seems to still be around and there haven’t been many breaks in the weather. So, it’s been difficult to coordinate a day that works for fishing and works for your schedule. However, on the days when the stars line up we are finding offshore has been a little slow; the water still right around 60 degrees cold and the fish are just not cooperating as a rule Patience and perseverance does pay off when you fish several spots to find that one which has that sweet combination of fish hiding on the rocks and using stinky baits to get them to feed. But as always for bait, I recommend using a combination of whatever you have, live or dead so you can see what they prefer. Gag Grouper (Grouper, Gag) and Red Grouper (Grouper, Red) are being found somewhere between 45 and 60 feet of water, but be patient as it just takes a little longer to get them to bite. There have also been several Red Snapper (Snapper, Red) showing up (always a beautiful sight) but unfortunately they have to go back. There are also good numbers of Black Bass (Sea Bass, Black) and large White Grunts (Grunt, White) right now as usual. But get ready! February is almost over so the winds will normally start to lay down. And when the water starts to warm up in March it will be Game On! once again!

Homosassa / Crystal River Fishing Report

INSHORE – There is not a whole lot of action in this area due to the change in weather as of late. It has been difficult to find fish however anglers are fishing the deep holes and pockets searching for Reds (Drum, Red) and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted). There is some nice weather expected for the weekend and by then the water should have settled down. At that point there should be a some great reports coming in.

INSHORE – Reds (Drum, Red) and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are showing up inshore this week. They are both a bit spotty due to the wind this week. Mirrolures have worked well to hook them so far. There are some Sheepshead holding up at the rock piles and they are biting well. This is about as far out as anglers are going this week.

Homosassa / Crystal River Fishing Report

INSHORE – There has been a great Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) bite inside throughout the creeks and the mouths. The size has increased dramatically and there are some nice fish to be caught. Soft plastics are producing the best bite this week on gulp and Little Johns. Anglers are throwing Mirrodines in the deeper troughs of the creeks. Shrimp has been the number one live bait to hook them however. Reds (Drum, Red) are steady. Outside the islands are holding the best sizes. The springs are holding some big Snapper, Gray. The Shallow rocks in close have great Sheepshead fishing as they spawn. Rock piles, ledges and structure are excellent for Sheepshead. From 8-12 miles is where you can find the best spots. BAIT REPORT – Mud Minnows are running so far this week in the really shallow water. Pinfish have a spotty run in the grassy areas. Blue Water Bait & Tackle 352-628-0414

OFFSHORE – We finally got a break in the weather! Gorgeous days but still cold water so the fishing was a bit slow. In 30-40 ft of water the surface temperature and the bottom temperature were both around 56 degrees. But moving out to 50-60 ft was a completely different situation. Both the Gags (Grouper, Gag) and Red Grouper (Grouper, Red) took a bit to get turned on, but once they started feeding the action was great! Nice Black Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) and large Grunts were all over every rock and seeing the Red Snapper (Snapper, Red) coming over the rails made the day even better. As the water warms up….get ready! Capt. Che’ Ruble Scarfish Charters

Homosassa / Crystal River Fishing Report

INSHORE – The nearshore rocks in 8-10 ft of water are holding great Sheepshead this week from Bayport all the way up to just North of the Homosassa Bay. There are also some Snapper, Gray and Sea Bass, Black mixed in there. There are still some Reds (Drum, Red) swimming this week and they can be caught on the days after the fronts, during the warm ups. They are eating well so far this week. The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) will be anywhere where there is rock grass or eel grass. They are eating Shrimp or smaller Pinfish on the outgoing tide. Spring is booking up quickly so call Capt. Justin Lofaro to reserve your spot!

Homosassa / Crystal River Fishing Report

INSHORE – The cold weather has pushed most of the fish into the deep water this week. The wind and rain has made the water rough so it’s not easy to get out. There are some reports of Snapper, Gray and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) in big sizes throughout the river. The morning bite is normally the best however the early afternoon has provided the most sun and heat for the water making the fish slightly more active. The rocks are starting to hold some Sheepshead. The bite is consistent and the sizes are great. Things are expected to clear up for the weekend when thing will warm up and the fish will move back into their regular patterns.

Homosassa / Crystal River Fishing Report

INSHORE – Before the last front anglers were catching Reds (Drum, Red) on big Shrimp under popping corks or even free-lining them. Just off the rocks there were some bigger Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) as well. The water temperature is dropping which will push the fish into the creeks and rivers. This will be a great place to fish, especially the mouths as the fish move in.

Homosassa / Crystal River Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) is really good so far this week. Anglers are using small Pinfish or Shrimp. Capt. Justin suggests bringing both as they seem to change their minds from day to day in terms of what they will hit. Both can be used under a popping cork. Mirrodines are also a great alternative to throw. The best time to be targeting Trout has been halfway through the outgoing tide as well as the first hour or two of the incoming. Reds (Drum, Red) have also been doing well in the creek mouths and the mouths of the river. PInfish are productive however the best setup is a nice big Shrimp through a jig head off the bottom. Sheepshead should be showing up any time now that the temperature has dropped a bit. They are on the nearshore rocks and ledges in the Homosassa river. They will soon become the target of most anglers. A J hook with a Shrimp is your best setup to hook them. Don’t forget to change your strategies based on the weather and the different patterns of fish you will find.

Homosassa / Crystal River Fishing Report

INSHORE – Reds (Drum, Red) are still excellent around the outer islands. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) have moved out to 6-8 ft of water. As usual live Shrimp are the best bait to use for both Reds and Trout. There are lots of Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) in the shallow flats and rock piles. They prefer anything live as well however Minnows and Mullet are working equally as well.

OFFSHORE – Sea Bass, Black and Snapper, Gray are the main focus this week. They are not too far out and are in fairly shallow water at this point. The sizes and numbers are good so far and they should not be too difficult to hook.

BAIT REPORT – Pinfish are running so far this week. There are also some spotty Mud Minnows and Mullet as well.

Homosassa / Crystal River Fishing Report

INSHORE – There has been a bit of a cold front coming through however there are still some fish being caught. There is a lot of big, nice Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) hooked on the turn of the incoming tide in kelp grass. Moving water is key. They are loving medium Pinfish under a popping cork. All the Trout are 20 inches and more. The flats just outside are holding a bit smaller fish. Incoming tide is producing Reds (Drum, Red) on the same bait. Artificials are not the preference this week. Shrimp will work as an alternative and will hook some smaller Trout and Reds however Pinfish are the first choice of fish this week. Keep to the areas that are producing.

BAIT REPORT – Mullet are running so far this week and working well inshore.

Homosassa / Crystal River Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Redfish (Drum, Red) bite has been great so far this week. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) have moved into the creeks and dark kelp grass now and the bite has been on fire. The sizes are great as well. The next cold front that moves in should increase both quality and quantity. There was a huge push of Bluefish and Mackerel, Spanish on the shallow flats so far. They are hitting jigs and shiny spoons, anything flashy to catch their attention. There have also been some Trout in this area biting Shrimp or gulp Shrimp and jigs with a mirrolure. Spanish have also been tearing these up this week as it seems they will hit just about anything.

OFFSHORE – Not too many people are heading to the offshore this week now that Grouper is closed. Those who have are targeting Snapper, Gray and also coming up with Hogfish and Grunts. Most of the fishing has been around the parking lot area in 32 ft of water. The Spanish have moved in this week so most people are staying within the shallow water.

BAIT REPORT – The bait focus is on Pinfish this week as the whitebait as moved out for the season. Anglers should have no trouble with this though.

Homosassa / Crystal River Fishing Report

INSHORE – The fish are quite unseasonable for this time of year as they have not changed to their full winter pattern as of yet. Despite this there is still a good bite to found inshore this week. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted)are doing well this week on the negative tide while drifting over grass flats. Greenbacks are showing some success when thrown for Trout however the best setup is a DOA or live Shrimp on a jighead. In the deeper water near the residential docks you can find a number of fish including Reds (Drum, Red), Sheeps (Sheepshead) and Snook, Common. As we have not had a hard cold snap yet we have not seen the Sheeps right on the rocks. Shrimp and Crab have been a great choice of bait for them so far. Homosassa / Crystal River Fishing Report

INSHORE – The outer islands are holding some great sizes and numbers of Reds (Drum, Red) that are going after Live Shrimp or Cut Mullet. As an artificial alternative, anglers have been using similar looking lures in dark colored plastics. This area is beginning to see some Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) move into the creeks now that the water is cooling down. The bigger sizes are expected to move in at this point. Just South of Homosassa is where most of the keepers are being caught on Shrimp. The Snapper, Gray have also made their way into the rivers and springs as well. This bite is expected to continue through the weekend.

OFFSHORE – Grouper, Gag is on fire in this area but unfortunately it closed midweek. There have been reports of Mackerel, Spanish swimming on the outside in roughly 6-8 ft of water. They have been chasing the Grunt run happening this week. A bit farther out in 12 ft there are some Hogfish turning on as well. Some of last week’s fish have moved to the inshore now which is where most anglers are focusing this week.

BAIT REPORT – There are plenty of bait for anglers this week. Grunt is running in the offshore while Pinfish, Mullet and Mud Minnows are all swimming the inshore.

Homosassa / Crystal River Fishing Report

INSHORE – The bite in this area has been decent despite the wind. Conditions are expected to calm down by Friday so anglers can head out for the holiday weekend and take advantage of the great fishing. Reds (Drum, Red) and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) have been holding up in the mouth of the rivers. They have been doing especially well with the cooler weather. Shrimp is the best bait however it can be difficult to get if anglers cannot make it out due to weather.

OFFSHORE – The bottom fishing in this area has been decent. The wind has made conditions difficult but when anglers can hit the water they have had a lot of success. Grouper, Gag have been along the bottom and anglers have been drifting for them. There is not much of an option for live bait in this area so most people have been using dead bait. Gags can be found anywhere from 8-12 ft still this week. Mangrove (Snapper, Gray) have been hitting some of the bait used for Gags as well. They have been coming up in decent sizes.

BAIT REPORT – When the wind calms down anglers can get out to catch some Shrimp that are holding up in the shallow water.

Homosassa / Crystal River Fishing Report

INSHORE – Reds (Drum, Red) have been fantastic in this area as of late. The outer islands North and South have been full of them. They are hitting Shrimp or Cut Mullet. Topwater, skitterwalks, mirrolures and gold spoons are all great setups and most effective. There are also a solid number of Seatrout, Spotted in 4-6 ft of water. They have not moved in any closer as the water temperature is still fairly warm. Trout are loving dark colored plastics in bourbon or rootbeer and bouncing the bottom with a gulp.

OFFSHORE – The bottom fishing in this area has been doing very well the past week. Grouper, Gag have been hitting along the bottom when anglers are trolling Threadfins, Herring or Spanish Sardines. They are all using dead bait as the live as moved out at this point. Gags can be found in anywhere from 8-12. There are tons of Mangrove (Snapper, Gray) swimming as well and are being hooked on Shrimp while anglers are searching for Gags. There have also been reports of some Hogfish turning up as well.

BAIT REPORT – Most of the baits at this point have moved out so anglers are choosing dead baits as an alternative.

Homosassa / Crystal River

INSHORE – Scott Baso, from Gulfport, caught some nice flounder on live shrimp around the beach behind Hubbard’s Marina and under the bridge at Johns Pass. He was using a small split shot to weigh down his live shrimp to the sandy bottom where the Flounder (Flounder, Southern) lie in wait to ambush passing prey. Art Seiple, Geoffrey Huyser and Sue Mongan are all local fishing buddies that get together to fish Johns Pass. The three of them were happy to report that the Flounder, Mackerel (Mackerel, Spanish), and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) were all biting well around the jetty and the bridge. They were catching these species on live Pilchards and also live Shrimp. They prefer to fish the outgoing tides but said they catch fish all the time inside the pass and love spending time fishing together. Kam Kavanh from Seminole was fishing with his buddy under the west span of the Johns Pass Bridge catching plenty of mackerel and flounder on live green backs reporting the outgoing tide was most productive for them. The mackerel were tearing up the baits higher in the column while the flounder waiting for the baits to hit the bottom. Michele Hawkins from Madeira Beach caught a monster Drum (Drum, Black) from the North jetty of Johns Pass while using a large live Shrimp for bait it was nearly 30 inches long! Robin Nash from Massachusetts we are catching nice Mackerel from the western tip of the north jetty using a flashy twitch bait. The overall theme here is that Mackerel and Flounder are biting really well right now inside Johns Pass. The near shore waters are still especially warm for this time of year causing the near shore bite to be more like a late summer instead of a November fishery. We are still seeing Billfish – Sailfish near shore and plenty of Kings (Mackerel, King) along with the plentiful Cobia showing the water temps are much higher than average for this time of year. Also, the Gags haven’t moved into the nearshore waters very thick yet but do seem to be getting thicker inside Tampa Bay. Many anglers in the bay are catching nice loads of Gags by trolling the shipping channel. However, the hotter than normal waters near shore are causing the Snapper to continue biting well much later than average and we’re seeing great numbers of Mangrove (Snapper, Gary) and Hogfish in the nearshore waters.

OFFSHORE – The offshore trip this past weekend was a 39 hour at Hubbard’s Marina. We caught some nice big Gags (Grouper, Gag) during the trip along with some beautiful Scamps (Grouper, Scamp) as well! The pelagic fish cooperated too we caught some nice Kings (Mackerel, King) while trolling and on flat lines. Dan Jackman from West Palm Beach caught a beautiful Mahi (Dolphin) while trolling and his cousin Jig head Ed Sumrall caught a fat Blackfin (Tuna, Blackfin) while trolling as well they were using large Rapala X – rap magnum 30 lures that we sell inside our tackle shop. The Snappers (Snapper, Gray & Snapper, Lane & Snapper, Yellowtail) Porgies and a few other snapper species bit really well for us at Hubbard’s Marina due to the very warmer than normal offshore waters.

Homosassa / Crystal River Fishing Report

INSHORE – Mackerel, Spanish and Cobia are both biting in the offshore water about 10-15 ft located at 10-12 miles out. Anglers are chumming for either species. There are a few spotty Grouper, Red in the deeper water however the inshore grouper are a lot easier to find.

OFFSHORE – The Seatrout, Spotted has drastically picked up. Anglers are drifting for them jigging popping corks or free lining with a jerkbait in root beer or chartreuse color. If you hook one you will hook many. Grouper, Gag are also hiding along the rocks. They are chasing big Pinfish on 2 oz weights. Snapper, Gray, Sea Bass, Black and Grunt (Grunt, French, Grunt, White) are also biting in the shallow water. They are hitting Shrimp or Cut Mullet.

BAIT REPORT – Pinfish and Shrimp are both running fairly thick right now.

Homosassa Fishing Report

INSHORE – Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) fishing is doing fairly well in this area considering it has been slow up to this point. Mirrodines are working well so when anglers come across some clear water, with a 20lb leader, can hook some fish. Popping corks with a live shrimp underneath are another deadly combo. Pinfish in small to medium sizes are also attracting Trout. The Reds (Drum, Red) bite is starting to fall a bit although they are still quite frequent at this point. There are a solid number on the high, incoming tide so that is your best time fish. Reds are loving Mullet right now and if you can find the Mullet, you will find the Reds. Although the wind is blowing you can still fish the bay unless there is a strong Northeast wind. There are no sheltered spots from this angle so anglers must take proper precautions.

BAIT REPORT – There are still some pinfish and mullet running. Although spotty, if you do find them, you will find fish. For alternative options you can always feel free to check out our Tips feature which provides additional information on the fish of your choice.

Homosassa Fishing Report

INSHORE – If you’re fishing the bays you will notice the Trout bite improving. They’re currently pushing inshore and coming in closer to the bays and islands, not too far out from the flats. Paradise Poppers with a small Pinfish on the bottom. Just about any of the bays close to shore are producing good amounts of Trout so you can expect to find success in any of these places. The Redfish bite is continuing to be good but will more than likely begin to slow down in the coming weeks. With that in mind, November is fantastic to get out there not only because of the weather but not all the fish have settled down for the winter and they’re still hungry. You can expect that several different species will turn up.

BAIT REPORT – Our sources are reporting that there’s not much bait in the area. Try the local bait shops. A list of all bait shops in your area can be found on the “location” page of the Pro Angler App.

Homosassa Fishing Report

OFFSHORE- The Grouper bite in Homosassa has been really good offshore. You can catch them right now in about 18 to 20 feet of water near rock piles. You can drop tinfish down on a sinker, or you can drop mullet, cut sardines, or cut ribbon fish. Coming up soon, when you’re about 10-14 miles out, you’re going to start getting Spanish Mackerel in the same rock structures that you’ll catch your Grouper in.

INSHORE- In Homosassa, the Redfish inshore are still what’s happening on the top of the tide. Pinfish and mullet are working well for the Reds as they are cruising around chasing schools of mullet. The Trout have finally started to push in up there for their fall migration. We’re seeing some nice, 25 or 26” Trout up there.

Homosassa Fishing Report

I think a lot of people gave up on scallop season a little too early, don’ forget the season runs until September 24th. The scalloping right now in about 4-5 ft of water is some of the best I have seen in recent years. The last few scallop charters I took out this week had their limit by 11:30 AM !! Best way to improve your chances on getting your limit, is to plan your trip around the last 2 hours of the outgoing tide. This will give you at least 2 hours where the turtle grass is standing straight up, exposing those tasty scallops. Best areas have been due west of the candy cane pole, you will see the flotilla, motor around on the fringes until you spot a few, hop in and grab em up! Don’t forget to keep your distance from boats with dive flags on them. Make sure you are being safe when you’re out there, Dive Flag well Displayed, know where your boat is at all times, make sure it’s anchored well..etc. Let’s go get them Homosassa Scallops!!

Redfishing has been the ticket on the big incoming tides. Live pinfish still seem to be getting the most strikes, however, cut bait is getting some attention now as well. The water is heating up quickly without the persistent rain, causing these reds to get a little lazy. Cut pins, mullet, lady fish, on a good incoming tide should entice these guys to eat. The trout bite has been a little spotty, we have been catching some trout in about 8 feet of water due west of Chassahowitzka Point. DOA pumpkin seed, electric chicken, and root beer have been the best soft plastics, slowly bump the bottom and cover some ground, you will eventually get a few to the boat.

OFFSHORE – The Barometric pressure has been all over the map recently due to the rainy weather. There are lots of Grouper around but they have been really tight lipped. Again, blame it on the weather.

INSHORE – The inshore waters here have seen good Mangrove Snapper fishing lately. Mornings and evening are still going to be your best times to fish. The guys over at Pete’s Pier say you can put a jig head on just about anything and the Mangrove Snapper will hit it.

BAIT REPORT – Pinfish and Finger Mullet are here year round. If you feel like catching some for bait, toss chum about as far as you can cast a net and wait for the fish to show up.

Homosassa Fishing Report

The water clarity is slowly but surely improving in Homosassa, making the scalloping easier. I expect by the end of this week we will be back to normal. The redfish on the incoming tides on all of the western facing keys from Homosassa bay to ozello, all the way down to Chaz are eating well. My favorite bait is a medium lively pinfish hooked near the tail on a 1/0 -2/0 circle hook with a 25lb florocarbon leader..If your getting caught up in the rocks, put a bomber salter grade paradise popper above it..I have heard reports of trout being caught near shore, but the trout bite still seems a bit slow.

OFFSHORE – Almost no one has been offshore. One brave soul went out and came back with some small Grouper; but that is about it. If the Grouper are biting, and you are really deadset on going out there, bring squid and something you can chunk up and throw down around structure.

INSHORE – The weather is bad and it has been kind of rough, but people are still fishing inshore. There have been a few redfish caught around the outer islands. The Trout is out in the deeper water right now, and the water is clearer closer to shore. The wind is bad for the clarity; but it isn’t super dark. The scallopers are doing real good right now because there is so much freshwater.

BAIT REPORT – Not a single baitfish to be seen.

Homosassa / Crystal River Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Grouper is biting good when people can get out. There are some Snapper, depending on where you have coordinates. Grouper are a more sure bet than snapper. Good bottom fishing definitely hinges on where your spots are. Jeff at Pete’s pier claims to be ble to catch nice Grouper in anywhere from 4-100 foot of water. He says his bait of choice is Threadfin Herring.

INSHORE – Jeff at Pete’s Pier let me know that the Redfish, Trout and Snapper are all biting well here. The trick is to get them on the incoming tide and be ready for them with some live shrimp. There is a local catch of Pinfish and Pogies which I imagine the bigger fish are feeding on, but nothing beats live Shrimp.

BAIT REPORT – Lots of Pinfish and Pogies around.

Tampa and Homosassa Fishing Report

“Tampa…Well the rains have finally subsided here in Tampa, there was flooded streets, houses and vehicles over the past week. The water has receded and we are back to normal. The water around Tampa bay right now has a lot of fresh water in it..Look for the best action to be had with species that can handle low salinity. There is actually some good redfish action in areas like Rocky Point, as well as 4th street. They are eating cut bait, live pinfish as well as live green backs. With the south west wind the water will be high, so look for the mullet to hone in on where the reds will be. The Snook are eating as well. Look for them on a strong outgoing tide, and be patient, when the water is high you have to give them time to get out of the mangroves and drop in to the areas were you can get your baits. Usually the last two hours of the outgoing tide is good for me. Any point near structures, oyster bars, or mangroves are holding Snook. Live Green backs are the way to go. Don’t be afraid to chum them up with some lively Green backs to get them going. If your looking to eat some fish, Mangrove snapper have been on fire with a good push of keepers making there way through the bay. Any of the bays artificial reefs are holding some nice snapper. Drop a Green back or select shrimp down with a couple split shots, and a circle hook. You will probably run into a couple flounder as well.

Homosassa….With the rains we have had the trout bite has still been a little slow for me, I have been fishing the Chassahowitzka preserve all the the way up to Mason creek for redfish to make a full day of fishing. The bite has been strong using a combination of baits. Pinfish free lined with 1/0-2/0 circle hooked in the back near the tail, has been pretty unstoppable. Following that would be a pinfish with a Bomber Paradise Popping Cork, then lastly Cut pinfish or mullet. Look for them about 1/2 way through the incoming tide. Any point that has hard bottom with good flow, seems to be holding a few fish. The larger fish have started the push to the outer islands, I believe due to the rain. Scallops are still plentiful, by the end of the week the water should a lot more clear, making the scallops easier to find.

Homosassa / Crystal River Fishing Report Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Fishing is great right now. What you want to do is go out to about 35 feet and find some hard bottom, a hole, or a little rock pile. Then pull out the Sardines or Threadfin Herring and drop them straight to the bottom. The Grouper bite is awesome right now and they are hungry. If you are having a hard time getting any attention drop some cut bait, but if you keep getting your hook cleaned you are going to want to switch to squid.

INSHORE – The Redfish bite is good. As always you want to target these guys with shrimp. The Trout bite has gone out a little deeper than usual right now, so you are going to want to fish for them either earlier in the day, or around deep holes. The humps out of Crystal River are well stocked right now.

BAIT REPORT – There is definitely bait around and if you have the time you can probably sabiki up some Pinfish.

Homosassa / Crystal River Fishing Report

According to our friends over at Ed’s Tackle Shop, the rain earlier this week has flooded the ocean with a lot of fresh water. That will have pushed fishing out a good deal further, and fishing in general is just not very good. Expect to find the usual fish, if you can get them to bite.

Crystal River / Homosassa Fishing Report

Homosassa Scallops!! We have been running scalloping trips out of the beautiful Homosassa River for the past 2 weeks. With my clients reaching there limit almost every time out. You have to put your work in but getting your 10 gallons can be done. We have been seeing the best numbers in 4-6 ft of water just off the Gomez rocks area near Crystal River, as well as near the Scallop rack out of Homosassa. Remember to try and plan your scalloping trips around weaker tides. This will allow you to see them in the grass better, and make it easier for you to swim.

Make sure you are safe out there! Dive Flags, spotters, Etc. Know where you are at all times when in the water!!

The Redfish bit has been consistent as well, there is nothing better than getting your limit of Scallops and reds in the same day!! Call us now to get in on this action!

Crystal River / Homosassa Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Gag Grouper opened July 1st, and while everyone is going to be out fishing for them, now is finally the time to take a few home in revenge for all the bait they have stolen over the last little while. Grouper love to take Sardines, Threadfin Herring, and Squid. Go out to Citrus County Reef (18 miles out). Failing that, fish around other structures that you have the numbers too, or go out and find a rocky bottom.

INSHORE – Ruth over at Ed’s Tackle Shop has been seeing the Trout inside around the Islands. The Redfish are also inside too, and if you want to target either of these fish than your best bet is to head out with frozen or dead shrimp. If you want a bit more of a challenge then try going with an artificial like Gulp Shrimp. The fish get lazy when the water isn’t moving, and while high or low tide doesn’t matter too much, the water does need to be moving.

BAIT REPORT – Right now the big bait fish is Pinfish. But if you want to go artificial the MirrOlures are good in red and white, or silver and black (it makes the lure look more like a Mullet).

Crystal River / Homosassa Fishing Report

OFFSHORE/INSHORE- There is a strong showing of Trout and Mackerel along the flats in the Scalloping Grounds. Tons of Cobia and Sharks too if you are looking to fight one of those. Although, for most of us that just means Sharks grabbing our catch. As for bait, live Shrimp is the best. Gulp and Unfair lures are working well in the natural colours. For the Trout, go to the grass, for the Redfish you are going to want skinnier water. Inshore is all the fish mentioned, but there is a heavier presence of Mangrove Snapper and Redfish. Shrimp is also the go-to bait for these fish.
BAIT REPORT – Pinfish out in the gulf if you want to. be sure to use a sabiki; it’s shallow and you could tear your net.

Crystal River / Homosassa Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – The Gag Grouper season is still closed until July 1st but that doesn’t mean you get a good catch. If you’re willing to go out about 80-100 miles you’ll find some Red Grouper there. You’ll have to head out that far because of how shallow the water is. If you want to catch Snapper you’ll want to go offshore and then head north or south to deeper waters.

INSHORE – Inshore you’ll want to fish the moving tide on the grass. There, in about 4-8 feet of water you’ll find Shark, Cobia, Redfish and Trout. These fish are biting well on live Shrimp. If you’d rather go artificial try using Gulp products. The Oyster bars are also good fishing because the rocks form a great pile that the fish love.
BAIT REPORT – There is lots of bait around. You’ll want to use a Sabiki and not a casting net because the rocks will tear your net.

Homosassa Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – As mentioned last week, the red tide from last year has had a negative effect on offshore fishing in and around Homosassa. Especially since Homosassa is so shallow, it will be a while before any good offshore fishing can be done. Unless you’re interested in going out 125 miles you shouldn’t bother with offshore fishing.

INSHORE – Cobia is about over in this area, tournament is winding down up. There is still some out there but they are not real plentiful. There is still a good number of Redfish and Trout around, however they are beginning to move towards deeper water as the water temperature rises. That being said your best baits right now are going to be Shrimp and Pinfish. According to our sources over at Ed’s Tackle Shop Shrimp won’t be around for too much longer. If you want to go artificial then Unfair Lures and MirrOlures are good – specifically the Little John and Provoker. Soft plastic gulps are also working well.

BAIT REPORT – There is bait around; Pinfish is here almost all of the time. Either Sabiki them, net them, or save yourself the time and buy them.
