Gualala/Anchor Bay Fishing Report

INSHORE – As anglers wait for Rockfish to open we anticipate that things are heating up nicely. In the meantime, Sanddab (Sanddab, Pacific) and Surfperch (Surfperch, Barred & Surfperch, Redtail) are the main fish to target during this time of year. If you are fishing for them, Bloodworms, Gulp Worms or Lugworms are generally your best bet in shallower, warm areas during the day. We hope to continue to see nice weather until then the Spring bite fires up.

Gualala/Anchor Bay Fishing Report

INSHORE – There’s still some big Dungeness out there. At least, there was. This one was caught on the pier yesterday, along with some others. The crabbers were running traps and snares but I didn’t get the score on which worked better. If you’re bringing fishing rods down the snares are probably the better bet because the perch catching slowed way down this week. At least there’s still jacksmelt if you feel the need to catch a fish. The reports of other fish being caught in the bay haven’t panned out.

Gualala/Anchor Bay Fishing Report

INSHORE – Things are fairly straightforward into this week. Dungeness Crab are hit or miss from day to day around the bay. Better luck is coming from the pier. Anglers are using Snares to catch them and some are even catching limits. The Salmon (Salmon, Chinook) bite has had good reports out of the Klamath. We hope to see this continue into the Spring season.

Gualala/Anchor Bay Fishing Report

INSHORE – Anglers are mostly fishing towards San Francisco this week. From the boat most fishing is closed so shore anglers are targeting Surfperch (Surfperch, Redtail). Generally, Lugworms, Sandworms, Big Hammers or Gulp are working well. Sturgeon (Sturgeon, White) have been swimming the bay. The upcoming Salmon opener has anglers gearing up.

Gualala/Anchor Bay Fishing Report

INSHORE – We are just beginning to find some nicer weather in the area as of late. Now that anglers can hit the water we expect they are targeting Surfperch (Surfperch, Barred & Surfperch, Redtail) into this week. Generally Lugworms, Sandworms, Bloodworms or Gulp Worms will work well to hook them. Bass (Bass, Calico) are sporadic but if you are targeting them head out with a Berkley Gulp worm for the best bite.

Gualala/Anchor Bay Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Surfperch are biting well despite the weather. Ocean water looks like it is coming out of the river but the Perch (Surfperch, Redtail & Surfperch, Barred) don’t seem to care. Calicos (Bass, Calico) and Walleye Surfperch are mixed in. Berkley Gulp 6 inch worms are the killer bait to throw this week.

Gualala/Anchor Bay Fishing Report

INSHORE – This week we are seeing a typical bite of the season. There isn’t a lot going on right from the surf and with the recent weather it’s been tough for anglers to head out. Crabbing has been the main focus overall and when conditions are favorable the numbers are good from the surf. There are also a few reports of Surfperch (Surfperch, Barred) on the beach. For the most part Lugworms, Lucky Craft Lures and Gulp worms are your best bet to to hook them.

Gualala/Anchor Bay Fishing Report

INSHORE – Anglers are mostly Crabbing for Dungeness Crab and fishing from the surf for Surfperch (Surfperch, Redtail & Surfperch, Barred). They are fishing better on the low tide. Generally Berkley Saltwater Gulp Sandworms in 6 inch cut in half are most productive. Any color is working well. We hope to see this continue into the weekend.

Gualala/Anchor Bay Fishing Report

INSHORE – Fishing is a bit slow at this time of year. Anglers are getting plenty of Surfperch (Surfperch, Redtail). Anglers are also crabbing and are doing well right off the dock using snares. Slack tide has been the best time to fish. We hope to see this continue into the weekend.

INSHORE – Despite the weather the bite is excellent into this week. Crabs and Sanddab (Sanddab, Pacific) are the main targets in this area. We are seeing limits of Crab and plenty of Dabs. 50-60 Sanddab per person is regular. Anglers are fishing full day trips right out front. We hope to see this continue into the weekend.

Gualala/Anchor Bay Fishing Report

INSHORE – Crabbing has been productive off the pier and in the bay however not all anglers are getting limits. Crab rigs and Crab Snares are working well to hook them from pier and right off the shore. Watch for a moving tide as the Crab will push themselves down in the sand. Slack tide is your best time to fish.

Gualala/Anchor Bay Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – This week Capt Rick reported easy limits of Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue) over and over! He also had 7 Lingcod turn up. They are up to 13 pounds. They pulled through all their gear for 230 crabs or about 7 per angler. The commercial pressure has put a hit on the local stocks but many boats are pushing north to Salt Point to Point Arena where the season will open in a few days. As the commercial pressure drops counts should improve for sport anglers who are soaking gear full time. We expect this bite to forecast into the holiday week. The Pro Angler Team wishes you a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. We look forward to bringing you more great reports in 2017!

Gualala/Anchor Bay Fishing Report

INSHORE – The New Sea Angler had a light load of 10 anglers and it was more of the same he has been reporting for weeks. Easy limits of Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue), four Lingcod to 10 pounds and limits of big Crabs. Generally stripped Squid or Anchovy sent right down to the bottom will do best to hook them. The day trips are most productive. Search islands, bridges and rock pilings to find them. The sizes are great so far and we are seeing great bites of Coppers, Browns and Blues.

Gualala/Anchor Bay Fishing Report

INSHORE – Earlier in the week Capt. Rick headed out despite the unfavorable weather. We haven’t seen any good weather for fishing in at least a week. He drifted the reefs for Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown) and also did some crabbing. There were easy limits of Crabs in only 8 pots. More recently Capt. Rick headed North for limits of Rockfish. A handful of Lingcod turned up as well. They are up to 9 lbs so far. Fort Ross has been a great area to search. Generally, metal jigs tipped with Squid will be best to hook both Lingcod and Rockfish. Crabbing continues to do well. We hope to see this continue into next week.

INSHORE – Rick on the New Sea Angler reported 34 limits of quality Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Brown) adding 4 Lingcod to a huge 29 pounds and full limits of Crabs. The weather was some of the best we have seen this season with just 5 to 8 knots of breeze over a 4 to 5 foot swell. Private boaters should check the current conditions before they head to the coast. The forecast calls for a quick moving system to move through Tuesday night and rain and wind returning this week. With the holiday weekend the Westside launch ramp will reopen on Wednesday evening and remain open through the long weekend.

Gualala/Anchor Bay Fishing Report

INSHORE – Shore anglers are hitting Perch (Surfperch, Barred), Rockfish (Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper, & Lingcod & Bocaccio) and sporadic Halibut (Halibut, Pacific). Rockfish can usually be found anywhere there is structure such as jetties and rock piles. The best way to hook them is using a Squid strip on a metal jig that will sink right down to the bottom. The Perch can be found on soft bottom areas. Bloodworms are a good choice as far as bait goes. Salmon (Salmon, Chinook) season is now closed however Crabbing opens this weekend. Anglers have been anticipating this season since last year’s terrible conditions.

INSHORE – Fishing has been excellent into this week. Anglers are getting easy limits of Rockfish (Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Vermillion & Lingcod & Rockfish, Quillback & Rockfish, Black) towards Point Reyes. Anglers are planning their trips between the storms. We are seeing a Lingcod per rod. Metal jigs, Squid strips and Shrimp flies are working well to hook them. The bite is good but you have to avoid the fronts. We expect excellent weather for next week and for Crab opener.

OFFSHORE – The Rockfish (Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Vermillion) are on fire this week! We are seeing very easy limits of fish along with decent numbers of Lingcod. Search structured bottom to find them. Anywhere with rock piles or edges will be key. Metal jigs will get right down to the bottom to hook them, and you can also tip your hook with Squid to attract them even more. This has been the main focus for fishing into this week. The testing in progress for Domoic Acid in Crabs has had healthy results so far. We hope to see this continue for a great Crab season opening November 5th.

Anglers were easily getting limits off the bottom around Point Reyes. Generally, metal jigs tipped with Squid will do the trick to hook them. Limits can be caught if you put the time in. We are seeing catches of Salmon (Salmon, Chinook) and Rockfish (Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Vermillion) as of late when anglers can hit the water. The Rockfish can usually be hooked on metal jigs tipped with Squid. You can hit them right off the bottom of structured, rocky areas. OFFSHORE – The Rockfish (Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Vermillion) bite continues to do well into this week. The numbers are great and there is also a nice variety of species and sizes. There are a few Lingcod mixed in however they definitely do not hold the prominent bite. INSHORE – The Rockfish (Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper) bite has been great as anglers are limiting out and also hooking plenty of Lingcod as well. The sizes have been outstanding. The hot topic has been the Salmon (Salmon, Chinook) bite off of Carmet. It seems every trip is limiting out and the sizes are better than the numbers. They have been caught mainly on the troll so far. We hope to see this bite continue into the long weekend.

INSHORE – Early in the week the Salmon (Salmon, Chinook) bite was productive, especially in the early morning. There were a lot of small fish but plenty of bites. The numbers were good overall. The best areas were 70-100 ft. The late afternoon troll is also productive. More recently the bite has improved from Bird to Elephant Rock. The numbers are great and the sizes are even better. Gualala/Anchor Bay Fishing Report

INSHORE – Earlier in the week Gage and Justin said the Stripers (Bass, Striped) were biting last night. They might be lying, but I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt. On the Salmon (Salmon, Chinook) front, the weather was worse today but at least one intrepid boat returned with five salmon in an attempt to redeem themselves from yesterday’s six fish lost. That goes a long way towards redemption. By mid week only a few boats went out in the ocean. Yesterday there were a couple of Salmon caught, or should I say earned. It was not nice out there. Today’s fishermen reported less fish but slightly less bad weather. It didn’t get real sporty until later in the day, at least. Yesterday the weather forecast was bad and the North breeze was already blowing at sunrise, but those that ignored the weatherman went out and caught Salmon today, and did it fairly comfortably. The bite was from Bird Rock to Elephant Rock in 180 to 220 feet of water, and from 40 to 70 feet down, according to what I heard here. Everything I heard of was trolling as well, but Mike Torres and crew, pictured, are pretty dedicated moochers and they almost limited. I don’t know if they mooched or not, but it would be cooler if they did. The forecast for the weekend is for more wind, but who knows? The weatherman sure missed it today and I stayed in the bay playing with Halibut (Halibut, Pacific) and Leopard Sharks (Shark, Leopard) because of it. Yes, I’m whining.

OFFSHORE – It was a good week! The Salmon (Salmon, Chinook) bite heated up and we saw some great numbers and sizes come in. Head out to roughly 40 fathoms and troll for the best sizes. Just West of Tomales Point is hitting limits up to 24 lbs. They are all schooled up so if you hit one you will hit many. They were roughly 14 lbs on average however most were bigger sizes. The Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Brown) have been hiding out around Timber cove. There are some easy limits in this area. There are also some nice Lingcod up to 19 lbs.

INSHORE – This week Capt. Rick headed to Point Reyes to search for Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Vermillion). They easily hit their limits this week. There are some Lingcod mixed in as well. Due to the wind they stayed close to the shore but the bite was still great. Salmon (Salmon, Chinook) are also doing well this week and they are improving as the season progresses. They are out towards 50 fathoms. The Pro Angler App suggests using Anchovies or Sardines to catch Rockfish while the Lingcod prefer Mackerel. Fish right down to the bottom for the best sizes.

OFFSHORE – There is tons of bait offshore this week.

OFFSHORE – The solid Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Olive) and Crab action both continue off Bodega Bay. The weather has been breezy but fishable most days for the New Sea Angler. On Tuesday the seas were just too big too chase rockfish but Rick was able to get out and score 28 limits of crabs. On Wednesday the winds were down enough for Rick to target Rockfish. His 25 anglers landed limits of mostly Coppers (Rockfish, Copper) and Browns adding a few Blacks. They also got 11 Lingcod to 10 pounds and 250 or easy limits of crabs. Beginning Friday Rick will be running trips focused on Salmon (Salmon, Chinook) for a few hours each day and will then be targeting Rockfish and Lings depending on what they find and best options for anglers to find tugs on their rods. Were hopeful that boats will find some Salmon where they were last located off Tomales Point in 210 to 240 feet once the weather lays down.

OFFSHORE – Rick on the New Sea Angler said that they saw lighter winds and just rolly conditions along the beach. Rick ran south to Point Reyes for 203 Rockfish mostly Browns (Rockfish, Brown), Coppers (Rockfish, Copper) and Gophers (Rockfish, Gopher) adding 11 Lings to 13 pounds for 23 anglers. They pulled through a dozen or so pots and sent all 23 anglers home with limits of crabs. On Wednesday the winds were up and Rick was only able to run a crab only combo. They pulled just 6 pots for 16 limits of crabs. The crab season closes on June 31st and Rick plans on working the reefs for rockfish and his crab gear through the end of the month. Come July his focus will be Rockfish/Lings and Salmon combos.

Gualala/Anchor Bay Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Rick on the New Sea Angler had a great day with 36 anglers landing limits of quality Rockfish (Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Black), 16 Lings to 16 pounds and an incredible 36 limits or 360 dungeness crabs. Rick called back later this afternoon to report that a commercial boat had 15 Salmon (Salmon, Chinook) on his first track off the Russian river. The boat found the action in 42 to 45 fathoms of all splitter size fish running 12 to 17 pounds. Rick says he is sticking to his game plan of Rockfish and crabs through June and will target Salmon when he has the confidence that they can put some good numbers in the box. He has lots of space open in the next week. The weather today was beautiful with high overcast, light winds and just a lazy 5-6 foot swell.

Gualala/Anchor Bay Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Lingcod bite turned on with Rick on the New Sea Angler reporting solid action on Wednesday 6-8. Rick was fishing off Point Reyes and reported 21 limits of quality browns, Coppers, Vermilions (Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Vermillion) adding 21 limits of Lings to 17 pounds. They then ran through the Crab gear and got 21 limits of Crabs. They have seen a big influx of males pushing into the crab gear compared to the past few weeks. Most of the crabs are still hard shelled and full of meat. While the Salmon (Salmon, Chinook) bite remains slow there are plenty of Crabs, Rockfish and Lings to make a trip to Bodega Bay ll worth the time. Bring some Crab pots, plenty of Ling jigs and P-Line Lasor Minnows and you too will load up on Rockfish (Rockfish, Greenspotted & Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Copper), Lings and Crabs.

Gualala/Anchor Bay Fishing Report

INSHORE – In nature there are tales of struggle and survival, like the Salmon (Salmon, Chinook) making their way back to the rivers of their birth, and baby sea turtles crossing the sandy beach to the ocean while predators pick off the unlucky ones. This Striper (Bass, Striped) experienced that by dodging Gage’s lures, only to be caught by Mr. Blong here on 6 pound test while he was fishing for smelt. It took him 15 minutes and a bit of luck to land this 19 pound fish in the surf. The crabbing was just OK over the weekend in the bay, a little better outside. The Halibut fishing was decent by Hog Island around the turn of the low tide. Surfperch (Surfperch, Sand) fishing was also good. No salmon.

INSHORE – The weather gods cooperated this weekend and lots of anglers were enjoying good Rockfish (Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Vermillion), Ling (Lingcod) and some solid Crab counts. Rick on the New Sea Angler ran back down to Point Reyes. Rick reported they had sacks of big Coppers, Browns, Vermilions and only a few school fish adding 25 Lings to 16 pounds. In the Crab gear they were able to pull limits of fat crabs for all on board. Private boats found limits of Rockfish from the River to Ft Ross with Dale A reporting 3 limits of mixed Rockfish, 7 Lings to 15 pounds off Ft Ross. They trolled for Salmon (Salmon, Chinook) on the way home and lost one fish at the boat and had a another couple of hit and runs south of the river in 140 feet. Water temp at the BB weather buoy on Saturday morning dipped to 47.8 degrees. The stage is set for favorable salmon conditions in the weeks ahead.

INSHORE – The weather laid out and was dead calm with winds under 5 knots over a 5 foot swell on Wednesday 5-18 morning. The forecast called for 15 to 25 but nothing close to that materialized until the afternoon. Rick on the New Sea Angler ran south to Point Reyes and reported excellent action with 19 limits of all quality Reds (Rockfish, Vermillion) and Coppers (Rockfish, Copper) adding 37 lings to 17 pounds. They also released one Salmon (Salmon, Chinook) on the rockfish gear. They ran through his long string of Crab gear and added 131 crabs from sport size to three pounds. Rick reports that he saw some promising bait marks and sign off Elephant rock on the way back up the hill.

OFFSHORE – We are starting to see a slightly better Salmon (Salmon, Chinook) bite and great Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Greenspotted & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Yellowtail & Bocaccio & Rockfish, Vermillion) action off Bodega Bay. On Tuesday 5-10 Rick on the New Sea Angler ran north. Trolling just north of the river his 11 anglers hooked 8 Salmon landing three to 12 pounds. From there Rick ran into the shallows of Ft Ross for limits of Rockfish and 6 Lingcod to 10 pounds. Still not finished he pulled some pots on the way home adding 89 crabs. The weather was great, the fishing was solid and how much more could one expect from a party boat trip targeting this many fisheries? Rick has light loads all this week. On the private boater front Steve R. reported two Salmon in 190 feet off the river. He said they hooked most OTW at 70 to 90 feet and lost three others. They ran to Ft Ross adding 6 Lings for three rods and half limits of Rockfish.

Gualala/Anchor Bay Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Wednesday May 4th was another day of great weather and fishing. Rick on the New Sea Angler had a light load of 11 anglers who took easy limits of quality Coppers (Rockfish, Copper), Browns (Rockfish, Brown) and Blacks (Rockfish, Black) adding 1 Ling (Lingcod). They pull through just ten pots for limits of mostly all commercial grade Crabs. Rick said the weather was great with just a light breeze of 5 knots over a 5 to 6 foot lazy swell. We have not received a single private boater Salmon (Salmon, Chinook) report since the weather laid out but with pockets of good action being reported off the Golden gate and Half Moon bay we expect that some fish should show off Bodega considering scattered sign and cool water temps we are currently seeing. Rick Powers checked in on Tuesday 5-3 to report the fishing is great and the weather is flat. Rick ran south to Point Reyes where his 16 customers landed easy limits of all quality Browns, Coppers and Vermilions (Snapper, Vermillion) with just a few blacks in the mix. In addition of the 23 Lings to 14 pounds they added full limits of Crabs on the way home. Rick said that most of the Lings were a solid 8 to 10 pounds and most of the crabs are all commercial grade and full of meat. he is running daily.

Gualala/Anchor Bay Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – A very brief weather window opened on Wednesday 4-27 morning allowing Rick Powers on the New Sea Angler to slip out and get 11 anglers into good action before the window slammed shut. Rick reported 11 limits of Rockfish (Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Black & Bocaccio) and 5 Lings. The weather started off great with just 3 knots of wind over a four foot swell at first light. By 11AM the winds were ramping up but Rick was pulling their Crab gear so it wasn’t a real issue being just a few miles from port. They wrapped up the day with 11 limits of quality Crabs to 3 pounds. Here on Wednesday evening winds are out of the NW at 25 and more over a 12 foot swell. The forecast calls for high winds through the weekend. Water temps have dropped to 50 – 51 degrees at the weather buoy and the resulting upwelling will make for great salmon conditions in the weeks ahead.

Gualala/Anchor Bay Fishing Report

INSHORE – On Wednesday April 20, the weather was flat and the Lings (Lingcod) were biting. Rick on the New Sea Angler reported 68 Lings to 17 pounds for 29 anglers. They added 213 Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper & Bocaccio) and on the way home yanked up 160 Crabs out of the crab gear. Rick said the weather was great with light winds of 5 knots over a 4 foot lazy swell. Rick has room for combo trips all this week. On the Salmon (Salmon, Chinook) front Daryl T reported two limits of Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown) off Ft Ross and one salmon hooked and lost at the boat. The Rockfish came in the Ft Ross area and the one hooked Salmon was off Goat Rock in 220 after many hours of trolling.

Gualala/Anchor Bay Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – On Thursday 4-14 Rick on the New Sea Angler reported 12 limits (120) crabs. Along the coast we saw a huge swell for this time of year with swell heights of 17 to 18 feet at the BB weather buoy. That said the winds were under 10 knots inside the Outer Bay and Rick was able to pick through a few pots for easy Crab limits. The Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper & Lingcod) season opens tomorrow, Friday 4-15 and once conditions lay down party, six pack and private boats should be able to find easy limits of rockies, lings and crabs for those boats that are soaking pots.

Gualala/Anchor Bay Fishing Report

INSHORE – Rick on the New Sea Angler had a light load of 8 anglers. Rick was once again trolling the 45 to 48 fathom area west of Tomales Point. They hooked 8 and landed 5 fish (Salmon, Coho) to 12 pounds. Rick said a couple of private boats in the area also saw 1 to 3 fish scores of mostly 7 to 10 pound fish. There is some good sign in the area and water temps are holding at a primo 52 to 53 degrees. He wrapped up the day pulling a few pots to send everyone home with full limits of all commercial grade Crabs. The weather was calm with less than 5 knots of wind over a 4 to 5 foot lazy swell with temps in the 70s. Rick has room daily.

INSHORE – Conditions in this area have not changed a whole lot from last week. Anglers continue to see Surfperch (Surfperch, Barred & Surfperch, Redtail) that are coming up on gulp sandworms and other similar artificials. Camo color has been very productive. We have also seen some safe crab testing for this area and are awaiting a possible opening in the next week or two. Everyone is eagerly awaiting the opening of bottom fishing so they can get an early start on Rock fishing. Gualala/Anchor Bay Fishing Report

INSHORE – If you want to catch a Surfperch (Surfperch, Barred), better hurry! The bite was around the top of the tide and the perch liked Berkley Gulp! Saltwater Sandworms. According to the pro here, the fish bit on every cast; getting them to stick was a bit trickier. The latest crab results posted on Friday. Crescent City, Eureka, and Bodega Bay (Salt Point) have passed and probably will receive no further testing. Unfortunately, Trinidad (South), Fort Bragg, and Bodega Bay (Russian River) each had a bad crab or three. A second good test from Trinidad (North) and Bodega Bay (Bodega Bay) will clear them. We’re getting awfully close to an opener in most places. Looking at the summary sheet, though, it seems that most of the places that have passed or are close to passing hadx readings like Fort Bragg’s current numbers back in November and December. That could mean two months until Fort Bragg passes. At least that would give us a two month season.

INSHORE – During the winter months of (November, December 2015) Crab/Rock Cod Combination trips were put on hold. After the Rock cod (Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Black) season had closed most of the licensed Charter Boat skippers decided to start winter time projects and repairs, including myself, Captain Robert Gallia. Almost all of fleet were engaged in doing some sort of projects or repairs when the State decided to open the recreational Dungeness Crab season from Pt. Reyes South. The new rule of 10 crabs per person also took effect. Sportfishing Captains had to scramble to prepare for the crab fishing season on a very short notice.

INSHORE – The weather in this area has been less than ideal for most anglers this week. There have been a few guys to get out and do some Perch (Surfperch, Barred) fishing and were quite successful. There were previously swells that were shutting down the mouth of the bay so we hope to see this settle down by mid week. Everyone has been focusing on the now-open crab season however. Gualala/Anchor Bay Fishing Report

INSHORE – We are happy to report the toxic levels in Dungeness Crab are beginning to drop. Unfortunately there is freshwater moving into the bay this week so fishing has not been great. It is a good time to try for Sharks (Shark, Leopard & Shark, Shortfin Mako) and Rays (Ray, Bat) in the deeper holes behind Pelican Point, White Gulch and between Cyprus Grove and Sacramento Landing. There are Bass, Striped and Sturgeon (Sturgeon, White & Sturgeon, Green) in the shallows this week as well that are reported in great sizes and a consistent bite.

INSHORE – The Crab situation does not seem to be improving in the area this week. Some anglers are clamming however the weather has waves moving the sand around and mixing up the water. INSHORE – There is not a whole lot of action happening in this area lately. The Crab test results for this area are improving so we are hoping to hear about a Crab opener soon. The weather has cleared up a little bit in the past few days however the anglers that have headed out to the surf have not had anything to report. Herring is running and we suspect they may be spotty with the fresh water mix. There may be some Stripers (Bass, Striped) following the run however we have not had reports to reflect this as of yet. The best spots to fish will be along the eelgrass beds or near Hog Island where you may find some Surfperch, Barred holding up.

INSHORE – Now that Rockfish offshore are closed the main focus has been on the inshore. As follows is the most recent Crab update. In Ft Bragg two blocks off Usual and Manchester were tested. The average DA levels from six samples was 26ppm and 28ppm with two crabs from each area testing above the action levels. In a nutshell we are seeing a consistent downward trend line with few crabs testing above the federal action levels. Hopefully we see testing in all ports in the coming week and a continuation of safe results. I’m optimistic that we should see both a sport and commercial opener by February 1st.

INSHORE – The New Sea Angler was out with a capacity load for the final day of the Rockfish season (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Starry). Dana ran the boat and reported 50 limits of Rockfish and 34 Lingcod to 15 pounds. They were working the 60 to 120 foot depths off Timber Cove. The New Sea Angler will be running crabbing trips once the season opens. To date we have been seeing a dropping trend line but there is still a high percentage of crabs testing above the federal guidelines. The F & G Commission did open the crab season south of Point Piedras Blancas as the mostly rock crab fishery there is now considered safe.

Gualala/Anchor Bay Fishing Report

INSHORE – Crab Update – While the Oregon and Washington recreational Dungeness crab seasons have opened and their commercial seasons are set to open on January 4th, we California anglers are still waiting on clean crabs. The good news is that most of the recent results posted are from crabs tested on December 16th and 17th. With calmer weather we are hoping that the CDPH posts results of any samples taken this week as soon as possible. If the trend line of lower DA levels continues we could be dropping pots in January. The conditions in the area are beginning to settle down for most areas and the water will take a little bit to get the fish re-organized. We have not had any reports from this area as of yet. Most anglers are eagerly awaiting the possible opening of crab season.

OFFSHORE – On Thursday 12-17 Rick on the New Sea Angler made it back out for the first time in 10 days. Rick ran north with a small load of 11 anglers and reported limits of Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish Starry) and 10 Lings (Lingcod) to 12 pounds. They worked the 60 to 160 foot depths off Fr Ross and Timber cove. Rick reports that the water color was green and temps along the beach have cooled to 53 degrees. He will be running rockfishing trips as the weather allows through the end of the month. On the Dungeness crab front there have been no new Demoic Acid (DA) results posted on the CDPH website this week. The only updates have been for Monterey bay and Channel Island rock crabs. We are hoping to see dungeness crab DA levels posted for Bay Area and North Coast ports (hopefully) on Friday.

Gualala/Anchor Bay Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – The sea conditions have been rough and wild for most of the past ten days. Here on Tuesday 12-15 we are seeing 15 knots of wind over a 10 foot swell at the Bodega weather buoy. With just 16 days left for the rockfish season readers will have to watch the weather and get out as soon as conditions allow. For the week ahead the forecast calls for a series of weather systems to move through Thursday, and again late Saturday with the wet pattern continuning into next week. There have been no local DA crab tests done off the Bay Area coast this past week due to the high winds and swell but hopefully the CDPH will have both crabs to tests and results posted by the end of this week. Some recent results were posted on the CDPH page for the Channel Islands and Morro bay and results can be found here. We are most interested in seeing dungeness results from Bodega bay, Ft Bragg and all ports north. If the weather stays rough and boats can’t get out to catch crabs for testing we will likely not see any opener until after the New Year. There is a HUGE swell train moving down the coast here on Thursday 12-10. While we are currently seeing a 17 foot X 14 second period at the Bodega buoy (6:PM) off Cape Mendocino the swell is currently at 33 feet with an 18 second period. These are not rollers but three plus story breakers and one of those shows that Mother Nature provides us to show how powerful she can be. This swell train will move south overnight and the forecast calls for swells in the low 20 foot range off the Bay Area coast on Friday. Due to the weather there has only been one domoic acid update from the CDPH so far this week. There appears to be a typo in their graph concerning the date but it looks like DA levels off Fort Bragg have again climbed after being in the “safe” zone in late November. That said if test results next week confirm that levels out of all ports are below 60ppm the protocol that DF&W said last week that tests would then be conducted weekly. Obviously tests can not be done with the current state of ocean conditions. We are checking the CDPH site daily and will post results as they become available.

INSHORE – Everything is fairly close to shore this week. Anglers are catching Stripers (Bass, Striped) and Halibut, Pacific closer to the shore from roughly 60-80 ft of water. Bounce balling is the best technique reported so far this week. There have also been reports of Sharks and Stingray, Round hitting a bit farther out this week.

OFFSHORE – Rockfish (Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Vermillion) are continuing to turn up this week. The Sheepshead bite is less frequent but still present. The Tuna, Yellowfin bite has died down a bit however are still fairly hot from 10-20 miles. They are mostly going after Anchovies on small hooks so far. Look for kelp patties for the best sizes.

OFFSHORE – Over the long Thanksgiving weekend the weather has laid out and the sacks are stuffed. On Sunday 11-29 Rick, on the New Sea Angler reported 25 limits of Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion) to go with 49 Lingcod to 16 pounds. Rick said they had a cold NE wind of 10 to 15 knots that usually lays back but today did not until late in the afternoon. Weather permitting Rick is running trips daily this coming week. On the private boater front Billy G reported four limits of mostly Blacks (Rockfish, Black) and Blues (Rockfish, Blue) today. Jerry A, of Sacramento, reported limits of Rockfish and limits of Lings to 20 pounds fishing off Ft Ross for the past three days. Crab tests are being done this week off the Bay Area coast and we will post updates as soon as the results come out.On Saturday 11-28 Rick on the New Sea Angler reported 38 limits of Rockfish and triple digits Ling to 24 pounds. Rick said they had some offshore wind in the morning but by late morning the weather was flat and the Lings were munching. On Friday 11-27 Rick reported 46 limits of Rockfish adding 84 Lings to 18 pounds. He has been working the Northern reefs around Timber Cove to Salt Point and south to Ft Ross this past week.

Gualala/Anchor Bay Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – The ocean conditions have been sloppy to rough the past few days and few boats have ventured out. Here on Tuesday 11-17 evening we are seeing NW winds of 15 knots over a 10 foot swell. Water temps continue to drop with current temps of 54.5 at the Bodega weather buoy. These colder temps will help to diminish any left over red tide and in turn we should be seeing cleaner Crab domoic acid tests in the coming weeks. Currently tests are scheduled to be done off the Bay Area Coast from Monday 11-16 to Wednesday 11-18. It takes about a week (a day in government time) to get the crabs to the lab and for the CDPH to release the results. We will post any news regarding crabs as soon as it comes in. In the meantime the rockfish and Lingcod action has been excellent and our party boat sponsors can use a few good hookers along the rail. The Lingcod have been biting Mackerel or whole Squid. Regulations can catch up to 180 ft. Anglers have been catching their limits and it does not get any better.

Here on Sunday 11-15 afternoon we are seeing NW winds of 28 knots over a 15 foot swell. Winds and swell will diminish through Monday and it looks like by Wednesday anglers on larger boats will be able to get back out. These winds and swell are also helping to upwell local waters and dropping water temps that will hopefully make for clean crab tests sooner rather than later. Water temps should slowly drop in the days ahead and a sloppy ocean is just what is needed to help clean out the last of these algae blooms. Anglers are using strips of Squid to hook them. It is one of the only fish available right now as Perch (Surfperch, barred) have not show up yet but are expected soon.

OFFSHORE – Due to unseasonable weather, warm water temperatures and species restrictions there is not much going on in this area. There have been no reports of anglers making their way out this week. Algal Bloom, possibly caused by El Nino, have created a high level of toxin known as domoic acid in Crab . This has caused the California Fish and Game Commission to postpone opening the season in this area. Ingesting crabs can cause major illness and can even be lethal.
