Greens Farms Fishing Report

INSHORE – During the Winter season the migratory fish have left the area and the variety of fish available in State waters are slim. Cod, Atlantic is the main species to keep while winter fishing but they are found mostly in Rhode Island saltwater. Inshore anglers can fish for holdover Striper (Bass, Striped) in many of the tidal rivers. We are looking forward to the Spring run. As we find varying weather conditions from day to day we encourage all anglers to stay safe and warm when fishing. This is a great opportunity to check out some of the current Pro Angler App features along with new additions coming soon. We look forward to bringing you more great Pro Reports when the bite fires back up.

At this time of year Stripers (Bass, Striped) move inland towards Black Hall River. Mile Creek and Connecticut Rivers should be holding resident fish as well. Most winter fishing for holdover Stripers happens in the Housatonic River. As we find varying weather conditions from day to day we encourage all anglers to stay safe and warm when fishing. Greens Farms Fishing Report

INSHORE – This week we expect to see a continuation of the bite last week. Bass (Bass, Striped) will be higher up in the rivers. There may still be a few lingering around the mouths of the Housatonic, Connecticut and Thames rivers. The bigger sizes will still be caught at night. Soft plastics mimicking Herring and Eels will do well. Live Herring is your best bet. You can find Herring in the water all winter. Find the herring to find the fish. To the South we continue to see some Cod (Cod, Atlantic) turn up when the weather allows anglers to get out. Head just South of Block Island for the best bite. We hope to see this continue into next week.

Greens Farms Fishing Report

INSHORE – Striped Bass (Bass, Striped) are still in the rivers this week. The Northern Housatonic just south of Derby is fishing well. Fishing is a bit slow everywhere else as it’s getting colder. If you put some time in you’ll find them. At the mouths of Connecticut, Thames and Housatonic larger fish are caught at night. If the Herring are there, you can use them. A whole, live Herring on a hook is your best bet. Larger Eel type artificials will also work along with soft plastic that mimic Herring. Weight these and get it down, drifting in front of the fish. Adding scent definitely increases the chances of catching less active fish. MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM THE PRO ANGLER TEAM! INSHORE – The Stripers (Bass, Striped) that are left are still fairly small. The bite is slow from shore. From boats there are plenty of schoolie sized fish to be caught. Look for birds working. You can get lucky and stumble upon some migrating fish that have stopped to feed. Bluefish are just about gone. The mouth of the Housatonic and Sherwood Island State Park near Mill Pond are the two most productive areas off Norwalk Island. Yellow and Orange are the most productive colors to throw. As for patterns, the deceivers are working well. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

INSHORE – A few Striped Bass (Bass, Striped) are still biting into this week. They are in the major tidal rivers and can be caught from shore at night. Most of them are smaller and there are a few that will bite during the day. Anglers can use artificials to hook them. Bunker Chunks and Eels will work as well however lures are more productive. Sometimes anglers will find Cod (Cod, Atlantic) in the Sound. The lobster traps are starting to incidentally get some of them. Greens Farms Fishing Report

INSHORE – There hasn’t been much from anglers fishing from shore. Schoolie Bass (Bass, Striped) are blitzing in the bigger water around a mile or so offshore. Peanut Bunker or 4 inch Plugs are doing well to hook them. Tautog have moved out deeper to 60 ft. There should be some Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) mixed in there as well. There hasn’t been much in terms of Bluefish. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

Greens Farms Fishing Report

INSHORE – Blackfishing (Tautog) is still hot into this week. There are plenty of keepers although we have not had any monsters reported. They are beginning to move to deeper water although there are still plenty in roughly 15 ft or less. You’ll just have to sort through more shorts if you’re in close. Heading to the middle grounds we continue to see Porgy (Scup) and Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) biting. The sizes are great so far but the bite will die off as the temperature drops. Towards Hempstead we are seeing a decent Bluefish bite on Bunker chunks. Diamond jigs are a great alternative. Stripers (Bass, Striped) are by far one of the main targets into this week. As the weather cools down the bite is heating up. They are still schoolie sized but can be found in large schools chasing bait. Small bait is your best bet in this area. If you head towards the West you can find the bigger sizes. There, Diamond jigs are a better bet during the day. Night is producing the better, larger Bass using bait in the same area. Use Bunker Chunks, Herring or Hickory Shad. As the temperature cools we will see the Bass bite pick up. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

BAIT REPORT – Anglers can search the rivers and harbors for Herring that they can Sabiki up. There are tons of Hickory Shad taking tins and topwaters.

Greens Farms Fishing Report

INSHORE – Schoolie Stripers (Bass, Striped) are still turning up into this week. We were seeing bigger fish on topwater in the afternoon recently but it will mostly be schoolie Stripers and cocktail Bluefish from here on out. Even anglers in boats are seeing smaller fish. Bigger fish are out in the sound but the bite is a bit tough. There are tons of fish stacked up in massive schools if you want to hit some of your favorite numbers. Brighter colors are working better catch them. Chartreuse, yellow or flashy flies will work well. Falling tide is best. The fish will stack in close to feed. INSHORE – Striped Bass (Bass, Striped) are turning up this week. Most are schoolie sizes. The Bluefish are bigger from shore. Bait and lures are working equally well. In the Sound, the Blackfish (Tautog) are the main target in 15-20 ft using Green Crabs. Jigs or are productive but put some time in to find an area holding fish. A lot of places are fished out or the fish have moved as the water cools. They are still relatively shallow. Diamond jigging in deeper water at 11B and 28C is great. Fish for them at dawn and dusk. Bluefish, Stripers and big Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are also being caught. Bass are biting all day long with the Bluefish. Dusk has been best. Greens Farms Fishing Report

INSHORE – Fishing has been good as of late. Freshwater is stocked and ready to go. In terms of Saltwater, we are seeing an improved bite. From shore things are scattered however boat anglers are hitting good schools of Stripers (Bass, Striped) and Bluefish chasing the bait. They are fishing Norwalk Islands and looking for the birds to find the fish. Fish are in the deeper staging areas before they leave. Early morning or late evening is usually better although the migration is on so any time will be productive. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

INSHORE – Blackfish (Tautog) is most anglers’ target into this week. They are fishing shallow rock piles around the islands. Generally Green Crab are best to hook them. Lots of big Bluefish can be found chunking the reefs at buoy 28C and 11B. Bass are mixed in and can be caught on a diamond jig. As the fish begin to stack up the technique will be more productive. Bass (Bass, Striped) and Blues can be caught casting around the islands as well. Albies (Bonito, Little Tunny) were biting before the recent wind began. We hope to see them continue when it lies down. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

INSHORE – Locally we are seeing lots of Bluefish in the harbor as well as around the islands in the deeper water. Fresh Bunker and Topwater plugs will work well. Albies (Bonito, Little Tunny) are still around, mostly out of Westport. Small lures are best for them. Blackfish (Tautog) just opened up however the water is still warm. Search a variety of depths to find them. Porgy (Scup) and Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are still being caught. They have moved in a bit to less than 30 ft. The Sea Bass are biting well. Stripers (Bass, Striped) are doing well locally but we haven’t seen any of the migrating fish yet. Shallow reefs are producing a nice variety of fish. We may have seen a new State Record Triggerfish (Triggerfish, Gray) at almost 5 lbs. It took a Crab in shallow water. Access Reels are heavily discounted this week! Low light hours during sunrise and sunset are doing well for schoolie Bass (Bass, Striped). Holly Pond, Stamford and Mill Pond are producing around the outflow. Bass will love any live bait swimming and Penfield Reef is doing well. This is also a great place to get Albies from shore. Smaller bait is best to hook them. INSHORE – Snapper (Bluefish) fishing continues around the docks. Striped Bass (Bass, Striped) are best at dusk, through the night and at first light. Expect to catch less fish during the day. Albacore (Bonito, Little Tunny) fishing continues. They are sporadic due to the recent front. Some days they do very well, upwards of 15 fish. Bigger Bluefish are around the larger Bunker schools. There are still Porgy to be had in shallow water. Anglers fishing for Stripers around the rocks are catching sizable Porgy (Scup). There is a nice mix of fish. Epoxy Jigs and Deadly Dicks are working well to hook them. The Stripers (Bass, Striped) are starting and we have seen more keeper fish turn up. They are around the Norwalk Islands. Blues (Bluefish) are taking topwaters all over the place. They can be caught from shore on the outgoing tide off the local jetties. They are biting better in the evening offshore. INSHORE – Snapper (Bluefish) fishing is good this week. From the shore the Porgy (Scup), Black Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) and Bluefish are the dominant fish. There are some Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] turning up too. Striped Bass (Bass, Striped) are quiet due to warm water. We expect this bite to pick up in another few weeks. INSHORE – From shore the Snapper are everywhere around docks and structure. Grassy areas right on the shore line will be productive during high tide. Larger, schoolie Bluefish are plentiful as well. Smaller Spearing will be the best bait. Rapalas and swim baits that will mimic Spearing or Peanut Bunker will work as well. Stripers (Bass, Striped) will be incidental from shore due to the heat. In the Harbor there are some Kingfish (Kingfish, Northern) that have been caught on lures or small strips of Squid on the bottom. Moving to the boats around the islands we are finding Porgy (Scup) everywhere. Clams are working best along with Sandworms or Squid. Don’t stress about bait choices as they aren’t picky. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are mixed in. They are scattered about however the bite is easy. You can catch them drifting for Porgy or chumming them up. Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] has been slower at this point. You can drift for them but they are just pushing the minimum size limit. The larger Bluefish are being caught in deep water in the morning using big Spooks or Bunker Chunks. Anything that will make a commotion near the top will be productive. The night bite on the Bluefish has been slow. The Stripers around the islands have been great in the mornings on topwater lures and poppers around submerged structure. Most of the Bass are close to keeper size however still too small. Cocktail Bluefish are mixed in there. There are no solid reports of False Albacore (Bonito, Little Tunny) as of yet. Look to the rips on the rocks for bait fish and birds. You can find Bass and Blues busting bait on the surface. The Bass are from 14 inches to 24 inches. Once and awhile there is a large fish mixed in if you head out early in the morning. Sea Robins are everywhere.
