Gorda/Plaskett Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – The long awaited bite is over and Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Yellowtail & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Widow & Rockfish, Canary) are finally open! So far on the half day and long range trips are producing well. The Long range trips have decent numbers of Lingcod, Reds and better numbers of assorted fish. Anglers are excited to be able to land some nice Canary Rockfish this year as well. The half day trips are finding more of them however other Rockfish numbers have been a bit lower. Weights are good, around 10 pounds for the Lingcod. Metal jigs tipped with Squid sent down over structured bottom will be your best bet. We are looking at 114 as of April 5 and we hope to see this continue into the season.

Gorda/Plaskett Fishing Report

INSHORE – As anglers wait for Rockfish to open we anticipate that things are heating up nicely. In the meantime, Sanddab (Sanddab, Pacific) and Surfperch (Surfperch, Barred & Surfperch, Redtail) are the main fish to target during this time of year. If you are fishing for them, Bloodworms, Gulp Worms or Lugworms are generally your best bet in shallower, warm areas during the day. We hope to continue to see nice weather until then the Spring bite fires up.

INSHORE – There hasn’t been a whole lot of change in this area as we wait for Rockfish to open. We are seeing the typical Perch (Surfperch, Barred) taking Lugworms, Gulp Worms or Bloodworms in shallow, warm water during the day. We hope to see this continue until the Spring fires up the bite.

INSHORE – Dodging the weather over the next few days may prove to be a bit difficult however there is still a bite to be had. If you can find a weather window anglers expect to see some Perch (Surfperch, Barred) from the surf. Big Hammers, Gulp and Lugworms will do well to hook them. If Cayucos and Studio Drive aren’t too torn up these will be good areas to start your search. INSHORE – This week there hasn’t been a lot of change inshore from last week’s report. The recent storm has mixed up the water a bit. Lugworms are working to catch Perch (Surfperch, Barred). It has been difficult for anglers to get out but when it is safe to hit the water they are hitting fish throughout the day. We hope to see conditions improve for the weekend. Gorda/Plaskett Fishing Report

INSHORE – We caught up with Virg’s Bait and Tackle for a fishing report this week, and as you may have heard – and felt, the weather has been way too unfavorable for anglers to be hitting the water from shore or from boats. When things clean up we expect to see Perch (Surfperch, Barred). Anglers doing well off of Studio Dr. in Cayucos. Sand Crabs are holding up under the pier and can be used to catch Perch in 4 ft of water. Lugworms are a great alternative along with Berkley Gulp Sandworms. Old school anglers are casting Perch Grubs. The fish were up to 2 lbs. There hasn’t been word on any Stripers (Bass, Striped). Previously we heard of limits of Lingcod in the forward part of the bay around the Power Plant. There are flash flood warnings, high wind and huge waves. We encourage all anglers to take this time to check out some of the great Pro Angler App features and prepare for their next trip when condition are more ideal. We hope to see things improve soon! INSHORE – The rain and wind is keeping many anglers off the water this week. During the winter season we see Surfperch (Surfperch, Barred) taking Bloodworms, Lugworms and Berkley Gulp Sandworms. This is their spawn so when the weather is calm anglers are doing well. They are up to 4 lbs at this point. North of Cayucos you can find Rockfish (Rockfish, Black & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Blue) along the shoreline using Squid Strips. Small swimbaits will work as well. The occasional Lingcod will turn up. The season was great. We are still seeing sizes up to 33 lbs. Locals fishing in the bay are catching Leopard Sharks (Shark, Leopard), Skate and Bat Rays (Ray, Bat) over 100 lbs. There hasn’t been much on Mackerel (Mackerel, Jack) or Jacksmelt. OFFSHORE – The three quarter day trip is producing great numbers of Rockfish (Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper). There were a few Lingcod mixed in. Most of the fish coming up are assorted although solid numbers of Coppers are turning up. Make sure you are using nice, heavy, metal jig to get right down to the bottom and hook them.

INSHORE – This week the temperatures are up and the weather has been decent overall. There has been a decent amount of Red Rockfish hooked over the past week along with great numbers of assorted Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Black & Cabezon). The Copper numbers are consistent as well. Generally a metal jig will work well dropping right down to the bottom to find them. Try tipping the hook with stripped Squid for a bit more attraction. Lingcod have been up and down, we are seeing a handful caught per trip. The Lingcod count for the season so far is 3,672.

OFFSHORE – This week we are finding some Cabezon and Sheepshead in the nearshore. Search areas with structure to find them. The main focus continues to be on the Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Black & Bocaccio) bite as we progress into the summer. If you are targeting Rockfish try throwing a metal jig tipped with stripped Squid for some nice results. Plastic lures and hooks with a bucktail are also a great alternative. The Lingcod are still a bit slow but they are up to almost 10 lbs this week.

OFFSHORE – The three quarter day trip has been the most productive for anglers. The numbers of Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Blue & Rockfish, Black & Bocaccio) are increasing steadily. Anglers are very easily hitting limits and there is a great variety to be caught. Sardines and Anchovies are your best bet to hook them right off the bottom this week. You can also consider a jighead with any shine to it. Lingcod are also turning up in decent numbers. The sizes are varied however if you throw a live Mackerel to the bottom you have a better chance of hooking a monster.

Gorda/Plaskett Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – We had beautiful weather and sea conditions along the Central Coast through Friday 4/22. Morning temps in the mid-50s, warming to low 70s the rest of the day. 3 to 5 foot swells with good intervals and winds topping out at 10 knots in the late afternoon made for great fishing conditions. Saturday 4/23 the predicted higher swell and winds to 20 knots had the skippers hard at work to get their anglers on the fish. Sunday’s forecast of even higher swells and wind gusts to 30 knots had all the local landings cancelling their trips. We had 9 fishing trips go out with a total of 231 anglers for the week . Total fish count was 2,054, including 189 Lingcod, 2 Sheephead & 81 Cabezon landed on our 3 boats. The Rita G is looking great after her off-season maintenance, new bait tank and other upgrades. She is back in action and the crew ran their first trip of the season on Saturday 4/23. Skipper Nick Mendoza was at the helm for 3/4 day shallow water trip on the Fiesta on Thurs 4/21. 24 anglers scored 52 Lings, to go along with 96 Reds (Rockfish, Vermillion), 107 assorted (Rockfish, Black & Bocaccio & Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Black), 36 Cabezon, 1 Sheephead and 1 Kelp Greenling (Greenling, Kelp). Up to 100 lb Bat Rays (Ray, Bat) are caught along with Shark, Leopard in the bay. From shore anglers are catching some Rockfish (Lingcod & Rockfish, Greenspotted & Cabezon). INSHORE – Surfperch, Barred has been the main focus for anglers. They are turning up around 18 inches long and up to 3 lbs. They are catching them from Pismo beach to Morro Bay Strand and even Cayucos area. Anglers are looking for sandy, shallow water around the piers. There has not been a whole lot of other action in this area. Anglers are still Rockfishing (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Brown & Rockfish, Black) from the shore in the rocky areas. Morro Bay is holding Shark, Leopard and Ray, Bat however they are a spotty, oddball bite this week.

Gorda/Plaskett Fishing Report

INSHORE – We are finally seeing some better weather in the area as of late which is allowing anglers to hit the water and take advantage of the beach. From this area they can target Surfperch, Barred and the sizes are increasing by the day. There is tons of sandy space to take advantage of the consistent bite, and there is structure around to find them feeding as well. Throughout the bay you can find them in holes and troughs when they are all schooled up. This will make for a less difficult catch and most anglers are catching their limits. We expect to see some unfavorable weather moving in towards the end of the week however the high surf shouldn’t stop you from getting out.

Gorda/Plaskett Fishing Report

INSHORE – There are a few different fish to catch throughout the inshore this week. Anglers are seeing Rays (Ray, Bat) and Shark, Leopard hanging around and they are fun fish to target for recreational anglers. There are also lots of Surfperch, Barred this week that seem to be just about anywhere. They are loving gulp Sandworms and live Bloodworms. The Striper (Bass, Striped) bite seems to have moved out but there may still be a few stragglers hanging around. Anglers can still target Rockfish from shore and the piers as well as the bluffs about 5 miles North are great. Anything with strong structure and seaweed is a good bet to find some Rockfish (Rockfish, Black, Lingcod, Cabezon & Rockfish, Blue). Virg’s Bait & Tackle suggests a 10 foot spinning rod with a 4 oz torpedo weight and a dropper loop with a 3/0 hook. This has been an extremely productive setup this week to avoid getting hung up on the rocks. Anglers are using Squid strips as bait. There is lots of action for anglers heading out this weekend.

INSHORE – The recent swells have moved the sand along the Monterey Bay beaches which is great for Surfperch, Sand, anglers as it is creating deep holes, troughs, and good structures for the fish to hold up in. They are turning up in great numbers and although the weather has not been ideal, the fishing is great for anglers who head out. The swells and waves have also brought in a lot of grass, kelp and various debris which has made surfcasting for Perch difficult this week. We hope to see this clear up soon.

Gorda/Plaskett Fishing Report

INSHORE – There are few Cabezon left but they can still be found for anglers who target and put their time in. There are no signs of Sheepshead, Pacific so far this week.

OFFSHORE – The fishing in the area has provided a lot more variety for anglers this week. On a three quarter day trip we are seeing great reports on Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Copper & Rockfish, Greenspotted). The Lingcod number has dropped dramatically but are still around and in good sizes.

Gorda/Plaskett Fishing Report

INSHORE – Sheepshead and Cabezon are biting on the inshore this week. They are loving live Crabs as a first preference. Surfcasting for Surfperch, Barred is still extremely productive this week and they are coming up in great sizes. Lugworms and berkley gulp are continuing to produce the best results.

OFFSHORE – Things are beginning to slow down on the three quarter day trip off the coast. There were very few Reds (Rockfish, Vermillion) and although there was a decent Rockfish (Rockfish, Copper & Lingcod) bite the numbers were not where they have been the past few weeks. We have not seen any action from closer to the inshore so far this week. We do expect to see some reports by the weekend. For anglers who head out for the new year, you can always check out our Fish Guide for additional information and tips that could improve the catch.

INSHORE – There has been some crazy weather in the area lately from Ragged Point to the Bell Buoy. Most of the fish have been caught within 10-20 ft. The water temperatures have been dropping and we expect a change in fish activity in the next few weeks. Cabezon and Bonito, Pacific continue to have a solid bite so far. Happy Holidays to all anglers hitting the water this week!

There have been solid catches of Lingcod and Rockfish, Starry & Rockfish, Vermillion. There has also been a good bite on Cabezon along with some plentiful Bonito, Pacific. Gorda/Plaskett Fishing Report

INSHORE – The weather and swell have pretty much shut the area down this week. Most trips have been cancelled and anglers suggest staying off the water. Once conditions calm down we suspect the Rockfish (Rockfish, Vermillion & Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Blue) will still turn up in decent sizes. Bonito, Pacific should still be swimming at this point as well. With this weather we are not sure if the Sheepshead will still be inshore however there should be a more detailed report from anglers when conditions improve.

Rockfish, Vermillion and Rockfish, Copper are hitting extremely well along with Lingcod. There have also been reports of Rockfish, Olive & Rockfish, Blue turning up with some Bonito, Pacific. There is a lot of different fish to catch in the nearshore and they are all hitting one lure. Flatfall Jigs have been outstanding and catching all species in this area. INSHORE – Perch (Surfperch, barred) are absolutely everywhere and anglers have lots of options to catch them. They are hitting variations of glow in the dark squid jigs, berkley camo grubs and crib jigs. Rock cod (Rockfish, Starry) and Lingcod are both biting right now on shimano flat falls.

OFFSHORE – Tough weather conditions have made offshore fishing quite difficult.
