FISHING REPORTS
FLORIDA NORTH WEST
Although conditions in the gulf have cleaned up fairly quickly there has still been somewhat of a limited bite offshore. Most anglers have been staying nearshore and trolling for both Spanish and King Mackerel. So far the bite has been consistent from Port St. Joe through Pensacola. This is also a great option for kayakers when the water is calm enough. Numbers and sizes have been great for anglers hanging around buoy lines, bays, passes as well as the Fort Pickens area. We hope to see this activity continue through the weekend. When anglers are able to head a bit farther out there have been a handful of Pelagics landed over the past week. Scattered Bonito, Tuna, Dolphin and Wahoo have turned up offshore. Their depths and locations have varied as they have yet to settle back into a pattern. If you are able to make it offshore and spend some time out there you are likely to land one of these fish. As we approach the new moon the Wahoo bite should fire up. Bonito are more likely to make their way towards the inside. Dolphin and Tuna can often be found around floating debris, so trolling live or artificial setups is frequently successful in these areas. The bottom bite continues its return this week. We are beginning to see more Snapper and Grouper turning up. A mix of Triggerfish and Amberjack are also mixed in and have provided some great catch and release action. It's always important to double check the regulations section of the Pro Angler App before you head out. So far, anglers continue to send cut bait down to the bottom. This has been the most reliable way to bring them up, especially when the waters are tough. They aren't too far out at this point, so many boats are staying within 50 miles. We expect the bigger fish will be farther out, but we won't know until anglers are able to make it there.
The inshore bite has held no shortage of catching over the past week. The Flounder, Redfish and Trout have all been consistent along the coast. Flounder have taken over the night bite. Anglers have been able to fish the cooler temperatures for a great bit of both Gulf and Southern species. They are spread out over the bays, canals and structures taking both live or artificial setups.
The Redfish have also been peppered throughout the inshore but are more partial to the day bite. Fishing the flats has found the best numbers over the past week. Grassy areas will be key. Similar to the Flounder we have found that both live and artificial baits will be successful in these areas.
The Trout bite continues to be limited to early morning and late evening due to consistently warm water temperatures. Sizes aren't bad and we expect them to increase as the Fall progresses. Fishing the grassy flats will find the best fish. The inshore bite looks promising for the upcoming season.
