Chesapeake Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – Although the bite hasn’t quite fired back up anglers are beginnning to target Striped Bass around points and bridges as they make their way in. During the Winter season most the migratory fish have left the area and the variety of fish available in State waters are slim. Some anglers are still targeting Tautog offshore and Stripers (Bass, Striped) inshore. There are not many boats left on the water over winter but the local tackle shops can always point you in the right direction if you are looking to get offshore this Winter. As we find varying weather conditions from day to day we encourage all anglers to stay safe and warm when fishing. This is a great opportunity to check out some of the current Pro Angler App features along with new additions coming soon. We look forward to bringing you more great Pro Reports when the bite fires back up.

Chesapeake Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – Anglers are doing well trolling or chumming for bigger Bass (Bass, Striped). Reports are still fairly quiet however Love Point, and around the bridge, have been producing well. Chartreuse Umbrellas and 10 inch Bass Kandy Delights are working well. When chumming, Alewives have been the key. White Perch has come out of the ends of the rivers and the backs of the creeks.

BAIT REPORT – We are finally beginning to see a decent Bass bite fire up in the area for anglers trolling or chumming for them.

INSHORE – The Severn is holding Yellow and White Perch this week. They are staging to get ready to spawn soon. Anglers are fishing way up to almost freshwater. Jig in 6 ft of water slowly on the bottom. Fluorocarbon line really helps in conditions like these. They are in the Tuckahoe in 6-10 ft holes as well. There may be holdover Stripers (Bass, Striped) around the Power Plant for anyone looking for them. Tautog are also biting oceanside. Not many boats are targeting them. They are more prominent up off of Delaware if you want to make the trip.

Chesapeake Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – There are some Stripers and deep White Perch in the bay. The Bay Bridge Pilings are key in 30-40 ft of water for both fish along the rock pilings and the main pilings. 6-10 inch KBs on a 3 /4 to 2 oz jighead are your best bet for Stripers. The Power Plant to the South is also holding Stripers in the warm water discharge. We are seeing Trout mixed in. Around Annapolis there are decent fish in shallow water. There aren’t many numbers but there are still some good fish. Point Lookout is one of the best areas in the state, right around the border. Puppy Drum, Stripers and Trout are all swimming there. Search shallow water to 40 ft. Use small bucktails as close as 10 ft of water. On the Flats by the Chesapeake Canal mouth there are decent sized fish where the canal opens up to the bay. Stripers (Bass, Striped) there are up to 36 inches. Oceanside anglers are going to the Route 50 bridge to jig for Bluefish and Rockfish. Most are small to 25 inches. Some anglers are plugging around Ocean City and Assateague. They are mostly schoolies there too.

BAIT REPORT – Shad (Hickory Shad) are moving through the beach. They are moving with Peanut Bunker (Menhaden).

Chesapeake Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – Into this week the Striper (Bass, Striped) bite continues around the usual areas to the South such as Chesapeake Beach, Bloody Point, Point Lookout, and the bridges. Anglers continue to slow troll for them using soft plastic jigs on the bottom. They are also found up the Potomac River at this time of year. Moving tide is your best bet to hook them. Bigger Stripers should hopefully get pushed in from the 3 mile line.

Chesapeake Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – The bite has slowed down a bit. We are still seeing some Bass (Bass, Striped) action to the South around Chesapeake Beach, South of the bridge and Bloody Point. Everything is being caught on the bottom in at least 30 ft of water. The bite is slow so troll slowly on the bottom. Bounce your jig right on the bottom. Bigger 7-9 inch soft plastics in white or chartreuse are productive. Aim for mornings or evening but the bite isn’t affected too much by time when they are in the deeper water. The one factor you need to look at is the tide. If the tide is moving, you can catch fish. Not many reports have come out of the Choptank River. Point Lookout around the border has been a hot area too. That whole area where the Potomac meets the Bay is worth taking a trip to.

Chesapeake Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – Things are a bit slow which is typical for this time of year. Anglers are jigging around the bay bridge for Rockfish (Bass, Striped). Fish up to 50 inches have been caught. Jigging soft plastics on jigheads has been most productive. The numbers are decent. There are still big Stripers out there if you’re willing to bundle up and brave the cold. There has been some anglers fishing out of Point Lookout taking in some Bass to 30 inches. They are decent sizes and make good table fair. We are seeing them down to Smith Island and Tangiers. The whole area is still fairly productive. There are still big fish on their way down from Jersey as well. The fish are deep and the big switch will be soon with the colder weather. Anglers will focus on the power plants with a good supply of warm water pumping out. The Choptank river is producing fish deep water jigging as well. Topwater stuff is done. Bucktails with plastics, alone or jigging with soft plastics is best. Stripers are closed as of December 15th. Most anglers will cast light tackle after the closure for some catch and release fun. Oceanside, some anglers are trolling off the beach for a handful of fish. The farther North you go, the better they get. Not much is coming from the beaches of Ocean City. In this area you can troll inside the 3 mile line to catch fish. At this point we see a lot of anglers switching to Freshwater and tributaries feeding into the bay.

Chesapeake Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – Striper (Bass, Striped) fishing has been pretty quiet here. Everybody from here is headed south to Point Lookout. There’s a good concentration of bigger fish near the MD/VA border. Look for the birds, or piles of boats, and troll lures or drift eels on the channel edges and holes. Tangier Sound usually produces a good bite on eels also.

Chesapeake Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – Anglers are doing well for Bass (Bass, Striped) trolling Bucktail Tandem rigs, Umbrellas and mid to large Spoons. They are searching Baltimore Light, Love Point and Bloody Point. Chumming fresh, cut Alewieves on the bottom in 25-35 ft of water is also productive. Sand Perch are turning up in deeper water on hard bottom and structure. Search the bridge to find them. Farther south towards Choptank and the Bays the bite is similar. The bigger migrating sizes haven’t moved in yet but they are up to 35 inches. The Choptank is fishing well just inside while light trolling or jigging.

Chesapeake Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – Anglers are picking up a decent amount of Bass (Bass, Striped) around Love Point, right at the backside of the ledge in 25 ft of water. They are really close to the bottom so fish the bottom to 10 ft up. Jig half ounce to three quarter ounce in natural colors such as big KD’s in smoky Shad color. Dip and Glow is helping will work too. Trolling, anglers are using small umbrellas with 6 inch chartreuse curly tails. White has also been a strong color. Other areas doing well are the Baltimore Lighthouse and the mouth of the Magothy in 20-35 ft of water. Most of the fish are down low here too. You need at least 16 oz. of lead to get it down deep. The dumping grounds are doing well around the sewer pipe and the bay bridge on the east side. We are seeing lots of fish but most are smaller. They are up to 19 inches. There are few keepers mixed in. Jig the pilings or chunk the bottom. Eastern bay is doing well on the troll. Find the hill with the 35-40 ft drop and use small tandems and umbrella rigs. There are still some fish inside the rivers. There aren’t many but they are swimming shallow water from 2-6 ft around sandbars. MirrOlures and Top Dogs are working well. They are beginning to slow down. Search the naval academy wall in the severn river up to Round Bay inside the Magothy River. Overall anglers are heading out and chunking with fresh cut Alewives close to the bottom. Live line Eels on structure, ledges or in the channels. There is a slow bite coming from the mouth of the Potomac. Anglers are heading North towards Eastern Bay, Chester River and Magothy. There aren’t many good sized fish in the local area. Scattered fish are up to 40 inches. The migratory fish will be moving out soon. Stop in to Angler’s Sport Center for tons of great gear and service.

BAIT REPORT – There’s some White Perch around that you can use as cut bait.

Chesapeake Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – The fishing has been great. The bay has been doing well this year overall. Gray Trout (Seatrout, Silver) have shown up for the first time in a long time. They are still around if you are targeting them. Sea Lice are all over them. We are looking forward to some nice Rockfish (Bass, Striped) for the Fall bite. Bigger sizes are beginning to show up. Fish up to 36 inches can be caught by jigging around structure. Bucktails are producing some good fish. Blue Blue Jigs in colors 1, 4, 7 and 8 are also a great choice. The Bay Bridge in the Central Bay is doing well. The Tautog are swimming the inlet in Ocean City as well as towards Delaware. Eastern Bay was doing great until recently. Most of the fish are now being caught farther South and out into the middle of the bay as the water temperature changes. Popper Island to the Gooses is where you’ll find fish. The Choptank River has really turned on in the morning and evening but the tide has been off.

BAIT REPORT – There is a ton of bait in the bay this week. Anchovy seem to be what the fish are feeding on.

Chesapeake Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – The fishing has been a bit slow in this area. We are seeing quite a few small Stripers. Anglers are travelling all the way up to the bridge or the Choptank River. You can find fish in your regular spots. It’s just a bit early for the really big fish to come through. Jigging for Rockfish (Bass, Striped) between 10 – 14 ft is producing better numbers. Bloodworms are working well to hook Perch (Surfperch, Sand).
