Breakwater Beach District Park and Bailie Beach District Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – During the Winter season the migratory fish have left the area and the variety of fish available in State waters are slim. Some anglers may still fish for Pollock and Cod, Atlantic. There are not a whole lot of boats still in the water so be sure to check with your local tackle shops to see who is still running trips. For inshore anglers, fishing from docks and piers around NY can yield some great catches of Herring. As long as the bays do not completely freeze over, you should be able to catch them using little more than a rainbow colored Sabiki rig. As we find varying weather conditions from day to day we encourage all anglers to stay safe and warm when fishing. This is a great opportunity to check out some of the current Pro Angler App features along with new additions coming soon. We look forward to bringing you more great Pro Reports when the bite fires back up.

Breakwater Beach District Park and Bailie Beach District Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – Not much has changed in the past week as the Winter season sets in. Herring is the main target for inshore anglers. You can generally find them in Cold Spring Harbor, Huntington, Northport and Centerport to find them. Sabiki Rigs are your best bet to hook them. We are eagerly awaiting the return of the Bass (Bass, Striped). April will likely be when we see them really fire back up.

INSHORE – Herring are on the docks, bridges and in the bay this week and they are thick. You can do well for them day and night. Anglers are also Squidding at night around the Waterfront Center Pier. YoZuri jigs in Pink are your best bet to hook them. Some very small Stripers (Bass, Striped) are turning up on Sabiki rigs as well. The Sabiki rig with all different colors is working best. Blackfishing (Tautog) is coming to a close. Not many anglers are catch and release fishing for them. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

INSHORE – A lot of Blackfish (Tautog) are being caught this week. The only problem is that there aren’t many keepers mixed in. Anglers are fishing in roughly 40 ft of water. Smaller Bass (Bass, Striped) have been caught inside the bays and harbors. There’s not many keepers left. Small flies and Anchovy when fishing closer to shore is your best bet to hook them. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are swimming out at the East End around Shinnecock and Hampton Lady. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

INSHORE – Lately the wind has made fishing difficult. Blackfish (Tautog) are still being caught to 5 lbs. There are plenty of keepers. There have been few bigger. Generally Green Crabs do well to hook them. Search around structures for the best bite. Typically they will bite anytime throughout the day. INSHORE – There has been some small, schoolie Bass (Bass, Striped) on the North shore. Small swimming plugs or Talking Poppers are doing well. Blackfishing (Tautog) is picking up as the water cools down. The ratio of keepers will improve and the fish will move to deeper water in 30-40 ft. They are biting well during the day taking Green Crabs. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

Breakwater Beach District Park and Bailie Beach District Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – Blackfish (Tautog) are the main bite around 11B on the Connecticut side. They are swimming in deeper water this week. Morning on the outgoing tide has provided the best bite. Green Crabs are the most productive bait. For artificials, try Tidal Tail Jigs. The Striper (Bass, Striped) bite is slow. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – The Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) bite has been slow. Hudson Canyon and Veatch Canyon are your best places to search for them. Swordfishing (Billfish – Swordfish) has been pretty steady. They are in 300-600 ft of water. Whole Squid is best to catch them at night with a glow stick and a rattle. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

Breakwater Beach District Park and Bailie Beach District Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – There are tons of Bluefish to 18 lbs all over the shorelines. Search the jetty, shore and breakwater. Stripers are coming in mixed with the Blues. They are up to 36 inches with tons of schoolies. Blackfish (Tautog) numbers are beyond real. Most are shorts but the farther East you go the bigger they get. Porgy (Scup) continue to bite. They aren’t hot but they are still biting. There are no reports of Albacore (Bonito, Little Tunny). PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – Tuna (Tuna, Bigeye) up to 130lbs are biting well. A few Yellowfin (Tuna, Yellowfin) are mixed in. Bluefin (Tuna, Bluefin) are on their way. The Bluefin we’ve seen so far are small and can be caught on the troll on the way out or back. Most fish are 100 miles or more offshore. Overnight we are seeing small Swords (Billfish – Swordfish). There’s some decent fish to be caught at the Hudson Canyon. It’s doing much better than the Atlantic Canyon. Island Bait & Tackle 718-885-2153 https://proangler.us/capt/IslandBaitTackleBrooklyn.jpg

Breakwater Beach District Park and Bailie Beach District Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – The shore bite is hot now that the wind has settled down. We are seeing Bass (Bass, Striped) and Bluefish taking bait and topwater plugs. The early morning bite is always productive but they are biting all day for the most part. Right around the top of the tide is a great time to head out. Black Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are doing well. We are seeing consistent 3-4 lb fish. Blackfish (Tautog) continue to bite well. They are quite shallow into this week following the recent weather and temperature drop. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

INSHORE – The wind is really turning the deeper water bite off this week. From the surf there are some big Bluefish and nice Stripers (Bass, Striped) turning up. The day bite has been most productive. Topwater plugs are working very well to hook them along with swimming lures as they aren’t too picky. Search Huntington Harbor, Centerport Harbor or Northport harbor for Bluefish up to 18 lbs chasing Bunker. Bottom fishing for Blackfish (Tautog) was great until the recent wind. Anglers are sticking in close at this time. We hope to see the Tog continue once conditions settle down. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

INSHORE – There has been a lot of Porgy (Scup) on the rock piles as they love the warm temperature. Nice sized Spearing are all along the surf this week. The Bluefish are going crazy chasing them. There is a nice 30 lb class of Bass (Bass, Striped) swimming if you are out at first light or late night in 30-40 ft of water. LIve Bunker will catch them. Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] fishing is tricky on the North shore when the temperature goes up however this is typical. There are a lot of Bunker schools being chased by Bluefish in the 10-15 lbs class and the occasional Bass in the 20-25 lb class. Smaller cocktail Blues are on the beaches.

Breakwater Beach District Park and Bailie Beach District Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – Striped Bass (Bass, Striped) are still biting very well this week. They are hitting big worms on the troll. Bunker Chunks are also effective. They are usually out in the deeper water. Right around slack tide during incoming our outgoing has been most productive in 40-82 feet. You can also work the slopes and areas where there is deep drops. Nice Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] are being caught as well. The action is changing from day to day from the East to the West. They are changing different bait on the tides so you just have to be at the right place at the right time. Look for rocky areas that will hold smaller Porgy and Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) that the large Fluke are feeding on. Drift over them to find the fish. On the Porgy (Scup) front they are everywhere. They are always a fun bite. You can anchor or drift for them. Clams are good, worms are even better. Sea Bass are beginning to become elusive. You have to search the deeper areas towards the middle of the sound in 70-80 ft. Small Bluefish are showing up and the numbers are amazing. They are providing some easy fishing off the docks and the beach.

BAIT REPORT – Huge amounts of Peanut Bunker are swimming. Anglers are cast netting for them all over Long Island. Cow Harbor Bait & Tackle has tons of bait for all your fishing needs.

INSHORE – Fishing has been great. There are keeper Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] out in front of the Nature Centre in 20-30 ft of water. Stripers (Bass, Striped) are in Mount Sinai Inlet on Diamond Jigs. Keeper Porgy are coming off the pier as well. Cocktail Bluefish are coming off the beach as well.

BAIT REPORT – Schools of Menhaden are moving through.

Breakwater Beach District Park and Bailie Beach District Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – There has been tons of Stripers (Bass, Striped) caught on the troll this week. The sizes are great, and up to 40 lbs. Topwaters are also working pretty well. Some Bluefish are showing up but they are mostly small so far. The Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] are doing okay this week, but they have not really turned on yet. This should happen any time. Bigger fish are getting caught everyday. The TidalTails Fluke Ratz have been the key to hooking them this week. The Porgy (Scup) are off the hook! They are 2-3 lbs. A lot of Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) have had to be thrown back, not a lot of keepers are showing up. A handful of Weakfish have turned up incidentally. The season is great so far!

Breakwater Beach District Park and Bailie Beach District Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) will be opening soon. Porgy (Scup) have been doing well on Clams or Squid. They are right along the beach to about 35 ft. The Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] have also been around 35 ft this week on Spearing. With the amount of bait running you may have to move to find them. Some of them are taking Sand Eels or Porgy as well. They are not as hot for Squid anymore. White has been a good color. Anything with a silver flash has been key and Chartreuse is good too. Most anglers are moving outside the harbor to Fluke. Look for sandy beaches with dropoffs or rocky structure. The rocky structure fish are taking porgy. The Fluke in the sand are loving Sandeels and Spearing. The fish are up to about 10.5 lbs. There are a lot of shorts but there are some keepers if you put the time in. Bluefish have been between 2-12 lbs. The Bass (Bass, Striped) are still going strong and we expect them to continue to pick up for the next few weeks. Killies have been the hot bait this week. INSHORE – This week we have been seeing Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)], Porgy (Porgy, Red), Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black), and Stripers (Bass, Striped) from the sound into the bay area. Bass fishing in the area is ideal with some bass weighing up to 28 lbs. Sea Robins are also prominent and seem to be out in large numbers. Fluke seem to be biting on the outgoing tide with really nice sizes near the Sandeels. Once you find the Sandeels, you’ve found the Flounder. If you are getting into areas with Sea Robins, there are not many Fluke there.

BAIT REPORT – There is a lot of bait around the area such as Peanut Bunker (Menhaden), Sandeels and sporadic areas of Squid, lots Spearing and Mantis Shrimp. Adult Bunker pods are not stacked up so you can’t really snag them right now. Sandeels are out in the bays, not so much the harbor.

INSHORE – The fishing is red hot right now. Bass (Bass, Striped) are still biting strong this week. They are off the kayaks, boat and beach. They are up to 25 lbs. Anglers are trolling worms, mojo rigs and Bunker chunking. Plugs will work as well. The Fluking [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] as has been red hot. You can Fluke on the inside of the harbor or Huntington bay, especially with all the bait fish going on. Anglers are drifting Squid and Spearing. Gulp is also productive, a little flash will help. Porgy have also shown up this week. Worms or Clams will both work. They are on the outside, work the Mussel beds and rockier areas to find them as they spawn. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) and Blackfish (Tautog) are catch and release but you may hook some incidentally. Rigged Eels are hot this season and Cow Harbor has all your Eel needs. Breakwater Beach District Park and Bailie Beach District Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – On the western end of the Island, Striper (Bass, Striped) action is in full swing. With so much peanut Bunker in the water the last few weeks there was a large die-off of the baitfish leading to easy pickings for gulls and bass, said John from Hudson Park Bait and Tackle. Stretch from Stella Maris Marina also reported big Bluefish and a mix of small to keeper-size bass hitting well, with live-lining the tactic of most production. There has been decent numbers of bass being brought in on the beaches as well with small plugs or grubs bringing the best results in the Northport and Robert Moses areas according to Mark from Cow Harbor Bait and Tackle. Although he hasn’t heard of many bluefish being taken out of late, there was a report of a 14-pounder being landed in the vicinity. Carmine from The Campsite has heard of continually large amounts of baitfish followed closely by stripers in the waters of Oyster Bay and Cold Spring Harbor. It’s still mostly school bass at this point but with each passing day it seems the keeper-sized fish are moving in getting active. John from Terminal Tackle noted a similar pattern with plenty of bass between 28 and 30-inches being taken off rocky beaches and tight to shore inside Huntington Bay.

BAIT REPORT – Tons of Bunker (Menhaden) are running this week.

INSHORE – Stripers (Bass, Striped) are now open however the weather has kept a lot of anglers inside so far. We expect that there will be some decent fish caught as soon as the conditions improve however we will just have to wait at this point. Anglers who are eager to hit the water can head to the South of the Island where things are beginning to heat up for the season. We are seeing some sizable Bass and quite a few Bluefish turning up right off the shore. If you decide to bring your boat there are many anglers catching fish on the troll and heading out farther to search for Cod (Cod, Atlantic). We hope to see this area set into a good Spring pattern in the near future.

Breakwater Beach District Park and Bailie Beach District Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – Weather has made inshore inlets and piers fairly inconsistent. Lingcod and Cod (Cod, Atlantic) can be caught while drifting inshore with clams. The Herring reports have been pretty much nonexistent.. Some areas along Long Island have seen Pollock (Pollock, Atlantic) on red, white, or pink artificials. Diamond jigs are also popular. The Pollock fishing is fairly sporadic so there isn’t really a best spot to fish. At least a bad day of fishin’ beats a good day of workin’. Be sure to check out our Fish Guide for tips on Pollock, Cod, and Lingcod for some additional angling tips!

OFFSHORE – The weather and time of year has made reports limited for this area. Most offshore anglers are heading to water up to 180ft deep while looking for Cod (Cod, Atlantic). There’s going to be some Pollock, Lingcod, and Skates (Skate, Winter) in the same areas. Lately the waters to the west of Long Island haven’t fished as well as waters to the east. Dogfish (Dogfish, Spiny) are usually caught out there too. Check out our GPS hotspots for some nonpublic numbers to try on your next outing. Spring is just around the corner and we’re looking forward to getting back on the water with you when the fishing, and hopefully the weather, heats up!

Breakwater Beach District Park and Bailie Beach District Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – So far there have not been a lot of reports of fishermen heading out this week. Blackfish (Tautog) were hot last week however they seem to have cooled down a bit. The weather is beginning to cool down making them less active, just in time for the end of the season. Anglers be aware that the Taug fishing closes December 14th so get out while you still can. Green Crabs are still doing the trick and are a great bait to bring should you decide to head out for the weekend.

BAIT REPORT – Herring are surprisingly running in the harbor despite the warm water temperature. They can be caught on flasher rigs which are extremely productive this week.

Breakwater Beach District Park and Bailie Beach District Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – There is not a whole lot of action in the area this week. Blackfish (Tautog) seem to be the only thing biting in the sound. The deep wrecks have slowed down at 70-80 ft. Green Crabs are still doing well to catch them. Blackfish closes December 14th so anglers are getting as much fishing in as they can before then. The fish have mostly been hitting on the Connecticut side sound. There have been no reports of Sea Bass, Black this week however there should still be a few stragglers out there. There have also been Squid caught off the piers.

INSHORE – There has been quite a bit of strong wind this week which has deterred most anglers from heading out. The Blackfish (Tautog) bite has become more spotty than last week and the sizes have been turning up quite small, less than keeper. From 25-30 ft of water anglers have reported catching them, as well as some of the deep wrecks at 75-80 ft. Green crabs are working well as usual. There have been a few reports of Sea Bass, Black however they have become spotty and our sources are certain they’ve moved out at this point. Breakwater Beach District Park and Bailie Beach District Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – Tautog continue to do well in 30-50 ft. of water. Anglers have been using mostly Green Crabs to reel them in. Best technique is still to throw the legs overboard and hook the body of the crab. Our sources have suggested stripping the crab right down the meat as the whole body may be too big of a bait for the smaller fish coming in. Bluefish have also been biting from shore and are successfully hooked on a jig bite in anywhere from 25-60 ft. of water. In the evening anglers jig for Squid as well as they are quite plentiful. The trick is to shine a light in the water to bring the Squid up first. Although the fish have been spotty anglers have still been getting out on the water.

BAIT REPORT – There is a lot of Squid in the water and it can be a good catch for people looking for bait.

INSHORE – Tautog are hot right now. Around a bit of structure in about 35-55 ft of water you can find them hiding. Anglers are throwing any kind of crab, no particular type, as well as some Clam. Best technique is to throw the legs overboard and hook the body of the crab. Our sources have suggested stripping the crab right down the meat as the whole body may be too big of a bait for the smaller fish coming in. Most fish are consistently 5lbs and below right now and about 15 inches on average, not keeper size. There have not been any jumbos so far. Bluefish are setting up for a jig bite. In anywhere from 25-60 ft of water you can find them on a fishfinder however anglers have to look carefully as they are not near the surface. Locally, there are Squid between Stoneybrook and Oyster Bay. Anglers are using a Squid jig at night to load up on these.

BAIT REPORT – There is quite a few Peanut Bunker (Menhaden) running right now. Bring your gear into Cow Harbor Bait & Tackle and take advantage of their $10 reel service to be sure your equipment is ready for spring.
