Bradenton Fishing Report

INSHORE – Despite the wind anglers are still able to make it on the water during weather windows this week. Redfish and Trout are the usual contenders making an appearance for anglers so far. Reds are schooled up, especially towards Sarasota, but are becoming more scattered once we reach Tampa. Searching shallower water will be the key to finding them. The Trout on the other hand seem to be just about everywhere and ready to take a live Shrimp or an artificial such as MirrOlure. Snook are consistent into this week. Passes and beaches are holding the best sizes. There are a few Pompano that may be caught as bycatches on the beaches. They aren’t picky in terms of what they are eating, so anglers heading out shouldn’t have a problem loading up. Structure is holding the typical Snapper and Sheepshead up to 15 miles out. This comes as no surprise to most anglers. Beyond this Kings are beginning to make their way in close and should progress on this trail throughout the season.

OFFSHORE – The weather has made fishing tough into this week however when anglers are able to make it offshore they are finding a decent bite of typical, seasonal fish. The bottom bite is producing Grouper (don’t forget to check your Pro Angler App for updated regulations) and Snapper beginning in 30 feet of water. There hasn’t been many anglers heading farther offshore however Kings, Spanish and Cobia are a bit more accessible for anglers this week. Searching the causeway and trolling live bait has been the ticket to hook Kings up to 20 pounds out of Clearwater. The farther out you can go the better the sizes will be however there are a few smokers mixed in the bunch. You’ll find the Spanish are schooled up so when you find one you’ll likely find many. If you find anglers are chumming, they are likely targeting Cobia in areas like Sarasota. A bit of chum and some live bait is a killer combination to land them from the reefs. We hope to see these fish fire up once conditions are improved.

INSHORE – The bite is fairly typical for this time of year. On the flats we are seeing some Cobia. They have been caught around Anclote. Small Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are swimming with few keepers. Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) are on the flats. Snook (Snook, Common) and Redfish (Drum, Red) are inshore.

OFFSHORE – There is still some decent action offshore this week. Grunts (Grunt, White) and Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are swimming near shore. Farther out the Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater) and keeper Red Grouper (Grouper, Red) have been caught. Sharks are beginning to move in.

BAIT REPORT – There is plenty of Whitebait around.

Bradenton Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Pompano bite is really hot right now along the jetties of John’s Pass and the beaches however it is a bit scattered towards Sarasota and thicker towards Clearwater. These Pompano are great eating too, and bite best in the early morning or just before dark. The Snook action has been hit and miss, they really fire up but then as quickly as they start it ends. We’ve seen some monsters caught inside the passes along the beaches. The Mackerel have made their way into the bay and around bridges.
Trout, Snook, Tarpon and Redfish are beginning to get fat again. Reds can be found chasing bait around mouths of rivers and particularly in Longboat taking Shrimp. Trout are more preferring artificials such as MirrOdines, Vudu Shrimp and DOA Shrimp. Sheepshead and Drum have been caught on structure taking Fiddler Crabs or Shrimp on a knocker rig.

OFFSHORE – There is something to catch just about everywhere offshore this week. From 50-70 feet offshore there have been great catches of both Kings and Cobia. We are seeing them consistently caught from Sarasota to Homosassa.
On the bottom, the Grouper and Snapper are doing extremely well, although keep in mind what regulations are in place for them. Grouper can be targeted with Shrimp or Squid while Snapper prefer Sardines or Whitebait while chumming heavy. Ajs are providing a great catch and release bite for anglers out for some fun.

Bradenton Fishing Report

INSHORE – Nothing is out of the ordinary so far this week. Although the bite is typical we can’t argue with how good it’s been. As Snook are swimming the rivers anglers are targeting them under the lights and also around passes. Keep an eye out as they will make their way to the beaches very soon in the Clearwater area.
Redfish and Trout are almost a never-fail catch. Slot Reds are loving areas such as Terra Ceia or around spoil islands. Trout are opposingly in deeper waters around edges of the grass flats, spoil islands and occasionally running flats on the beach for warm water pockets. The occasional Pompano and Spanish Mackerel are also on the beaches.

OFFSHORE – The variety of fish is improving this week. Anglers are finding fish nearshore, offshore on the bottom, just about everywhere! If you can find a weather window to head farther offshore the Tuna bite is turning on. Blackfin can be found roughly 30 miles out of Sarasota while if we look to St. Petersburg the Yellowfin are active farther on the long range overnight trips. Moving closer in, the Kings are biting well. A few of them can be caught mixed in with offshore Tuna however most of them are more towards the shipping channel areas chasing live bait. Of course, Cobia aren’t far behind as they are even closer holding up on nearshore wrecks and reefs.
The typical bottom bite is nothing new for anglers in the area. Snapper are beginning to gear up for an aggressive feeding coming very soon. The sizes are expected to be great. Grouper and Hogfish are consistently turning up while specifically targeting them, especially in the Clearwater area. Scattered Sea Bass and Grunts may be caught as well.

Bradenton Fishing Report

INSHORE – Snook have a been a little difficult to find in keeper sizes. There has been a lot of catch and release angling from Sarasota up in to Tampa. Try to find moving water and fish to structure just before high or low tide as they move out to feed. Bluefish, Ladyfish and Jacks have been a common bycatch out of the Sarasota area. Trout fishing has been just ok. If you were to pick only one place to Trout fish this week, you might best head to Sarasota where you will also have the opportunity to hook some Flounder while fishing with MirrOlures oddly enough. Redfish have been steady across Florida’s Central West coast. They are especially moving well down the river with Snook near Clearwater and caught or the oyster bars up in Homosassa. Tarpon have been heating up in Tampa Bay. Cobia anglers out of Hudson have been catching fish on the Flats.

OFFSHORE – We’re still waiting for King Mackerel to show up here. There is a decent Grouper and Snapper bite on the days you can get out around 10 miles. Best baits to take this week are Sardines and Squid. The Grouper off of Clearwater have been particular to Pinfish. There is also a worthwhile amount of Amberjack on structure off of Hudson.

Bradenton Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Snook bite has been HOT HOT HOT just about everywhere through Florida’s Central-West coast. Tide direction hasn’t affected the bite, just as long as there’s moving water. There will also be Redfish mixed in with the Snook. Redfish have been a little sporadic to the south, they improve around the west side of Tampa on Greenbacks or cut bait such as Pinfish. You can find them schooled up on both low tide and high tide. Trout fishing has been fairly decent through the day. There has even been a lot of Trout taken on Rapala Topwaters. Pompano anglers have been finding most of their action coming from sandbars in Tampa Bay while throwing jigs.

OFFSHORE – You will have to head pretty deep to find any sizeable Red Grouper right now, starting in at least 150 feet of water. Amberjack have been hauled off of bottom structure much closer in while Sheepshead have been on the nearshore structures. There has been a lot of Kingfish around St. Petersburg, we expect this to pick up as the warmer weather comes.

Bradenton Fishing Report

INSHORE – Despite the weather it seems we can almost always hook a few nice Redfish and Trout. The Redfish are still a bit scattered at this point but if you put some time in anglers should be able to find a few decent fish. Live bait has been the ticket to catch them, with a select few artificials including Spoons and soft plastics in Shrimp patterns working well. Trout can be found in any of the shallower areas from Sarasota all the way down to Homosassa.
Snook are fairly consistent this week as well. They seem to be taking just about everything, however live bait at night is producing well. Sheepshead are beginning to really fire up on structure as usual. In St. Petersburg there are a few reports of Flounder mixed in. They are preferring live bait.
On the surf anglers are finding Pompano here and there.

OFFSHORE – Everything is in close this week. Blackfin Tuna are holding up in the deeper Springs this week and can be caught trolling with artificials. On the bottom the Amberjack and Grouper are biting in the same depths. Ajs have had the most consistent bite down the coast this week. As usual, structure is the best place to search for them.
A bit closer in we are finding a productive bite of Snapper, Hogfish and Grunts. The variety of Snapper include Muttons, Lanes and Mangroves. The numbers were great prior to the recent weather and we expect they should pick back up. When anglers can make it farther offshore the bite of Vermilion and Yellowtail Snapper are putting up a good fight.

February 17, 2017

Bradenton Fishing Report

INSHORE – From inside Tampa Bay out to John’s Pass there is a good Sheepshead bite. Trout are found near inshore troughs during low tides on Shrimp or Greenbacks fished under a popping cork. The best reports on Snook have come from Sarasota over to St. Petersburg. Live baits such as Pinfish or Shrimp will work well to hook them. Inshore anglers targeting Redfish have had the most success off of docks in the rivers, oyster beds throughout intracoastal waterways. The flats around New Port Richey as well as up near Homosassa will provide anglers with a decent Redfish bite on cut bait and Pinfish.
It’s worth making the trip to Sarasota as the Skyway bridge has been offering up some Cobia.

OFFSHORE – The gulf of Mexico has been kind to offshore boats this week. Amberjack have been fishing well on wrecks for anyone using Sardines. If you are headed out of St. Pete’s, target wrecks in 100 ft of water. Out of New Port Richey you will want to be fishing in 50-80 ft. There will also be an assortment of Grouper and Snapper here as well. Yellowtail Snapper have been biting well on structure in the 30 mile range.
From 7-15 miles, anglers in this region can expect to find Hogfish as well as some small Grouper and Snapper. Triggerfish are spread out on reefs and wrecks as you fish your way into the gulf. Keep in mind that they are catch and release at this time. Nearshore trolling with soft plastics has been productive for King Mackerel.

Bradenton Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Sheepshead bite is outstanding in depths of 12-20 ft. Anglers are catching them in the Tampa Bay area in open water on rock piles, at the bridges and on docks. Live Shrimp, Fiddler Crabs and Sand Fleas with a light leader and a small jighead or a number 1 J-Hook is best. Speckled Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) in St. Joseph’s Sound are taking artificials such as the MirrOlure 17MR or the Matrix Shad paddle tail on a quarter oz jighead or 3 / 8 in deeper water. Search 2-6 ft to find them. A few Sheepshead are mixed in but they are a bit more scattered than the bay. Cobia are cruising the flats near the power plants. Look for warmer water and Stingrays. Nice Sharks have also been caught in the area. The Sheepshead and Trout are providing the best overall bite in the bay. Most are 12-15 inches with a few bigger sizes from 17-19 inches. Mangrove Snapper (Snapper, Gray) are chewing well too on every rock pile you can find. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal tons of information and tips to catch!

Bradenton Fishing Report

INSHORE – The wind has been stirring up the water and red tide this week. When anglers are heading out they are avoiding the passes and fishing well away in the grass flats. Floating Shrimp under a cork or anything that will imitate a baitfish including MirrOdines, Yo Zuris and Rapalas are working well. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are preferring silver while Redfish (Drum, Red) is preferring brown or dark, gold colors. Bradenton Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Red Tide which roams to Charlotte County is patchy so find clean water to find fish. Don’t let floating, dead fish deter you from fishing as they may have blown in with the wind. Green, Clean water vs. Yellow, tinted water. Look for Mullet jumping and birds diving for live bait. Bluefish, Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish), Trout (Seatrout, Spotted), Redfish (Drum, Red) and Snook (Snook, Common) can all be found on the East shore of Sarasota Bay. Bait and Plastics are both working well. If you get up north of the Manatee River the bite is great as well. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below for additional tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – Past 3-5 miles we are seeing all kinds of Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) and Kings (Mackerel, King).

INSHORE – There has been some Redfish (Drum, Red) caught before the storm began to set in. Spanish Mackerel (Mackerel, Spanish) were swimming lower Tampa Bay chasing bait pods as well. There has been quite a bit of unfavorable weather here lately so we hope to see the bite heat back up once things calm down. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – With this system pushing through most of Florida, we expect a lot of wind and tough conditions. Most of the fishing from last week should fire back up once the storm passes. Bradenton Fishing Report

INSHORE – There are some big Snook (Snook, Common) that are catch and release in the passes and on the beach. Redfish (Drum, Red) are scattered. The bite has been tough and anglers are only picking them up here and there. Flounder (Flounder, Southern) and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are great on shorelines and grass beds. Soft plastics on a jighead are the best bet to hook them. There are a tonne of Sharks (Shark, Blacktip & Shark, Nurse & Shark, Bull & Shark, H.H. – Smooth) on the beaches. They are chasing the Tarpon run. Barracuda (Barracuda, Great) have also been caught. Mangroves (Snapper, Gray) are hot in the shipping channel as well as the artificial reefs from 3-40 miles out. Cut Threadfins or Squid have been producing well. Small Sardines or Whitebait on a jighead is a great alternative.

OFFSHORE – Sharks (Shark, Blacktip & Shark, H.H. – Smooth) are feeding on bait about 20 miles offshore. They are running thick close to the surface. Permit have also been catching well with Crab. They are all over most wrecks at about 20-25 miles. The Grouper (Grouper, Gag) bite has been slow and short this week. We suspect there are some nice ones that have been breaking off. Red Grouper (Grouper, Red) have been consistent from 20-30 miles. Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater) have also been holding up in the same area. They are great but catch and release.

BAIT REPORT – Blue Runners are thick offshore. Cigar Minnows can be caught on Sabiki over a reef from 3-20 miles out.

The occasional Redfish (Drum, Red) has come in but it’s not their season as of now.

OFFSHORE – Anglers are still going out deep at about 35 miles for Gags (Grouper, Gag). Most anglers are using live bait or cut bait. Even jigs with strip bait are working. Bonita Belly is a great choice. Cobia are on the Whale Sharks.

Bradenton Fishing Report

INSHORE – The water has been surprisingly clear despite the recent weather. The bite during the high 2.5 ft tide has been best. The moving water has produced tons of Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) on Shrimp and Spooks. Look for the oyster beds near the channel. They are all moving right now and have been pushed towards the channel during the storm system. They will be trying to move out. The low tide on first light has been great for Redfish (Drum, Red) on Zmans. From 1-2 ft of water they are getting stuck in the tide. They will be holding up in the mangroves. Look for untouched water as they are very spooky this time of year. In big Sarasota, the passes and moving water will be holding some great fish that you can catch on Threadfins or the Zman Hoodini on a 3 oz jighead. Nearshore the Tarpon bite is on fire. Crabs are everywhere. The jetties or Big Pass have been great. You don’t even need to buy Crabs as they are everywhere. Wait on the grassy areas, they’ll come. The Snook (Snook, Common) are all over the beach. Threadfins, Spros or anything white will kill it. The high tide on the outgoing will be productive where the rocks meet mangroves. Topwaters and Zman jerkshad will be successful. Move it quick to catch the big sizes.

BAIT REPORT – Crabs are everywhere and ready to be netted.

Bradenton Fishing Report

INSHORE – There are a lot of Snook (Snook, Common) in and around the passes this week. In Terra Ceia there are a lot of schools of Redfish (Drum, Red) but you want to get out there before anyone else breaks them up. The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) bite has been pretty consistent but nothing too big. Upper Sarasota Bay and around the intracoastal in Sarasota there are definitely a lot of Snook that are going to be headed towards the passes. For inshore lures, the DOA Cow in the shiner color. For the big Snook the Spooltek have been working really well. There are Threadfins off the beach and that has the Tarpon running through them in the mornings. If you are throwing something that looks like a Threadfin, you can’t be going wrong with the Tarpon – live crab is also the ticket.

OFFSHORE – American Reds (Snapper, Red) are way out between 40-60 ft., anything less than that and you will be finding a lot of smaller fish. For keeper Gags (Grouper, Gag), you don’t have to go too far, around 40 ft. should do the trick. However, some anglers are catching Gags around Sarasota Bay. For the Gags, you can’t go wrong if you are throwing Pinfish.

INSHORE – Anglers are catching Flounder (Flounder, Southern), Mangroves (Snapper, Gray), and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted). The Snook (Snook, Common) bite has been excellent. Nearshore we are seeing Tarpon on the beach. They are loving the early bite. Live Crabs and Pinfish or big Threadfins are the best baits on a free line or under a float.

Bradenton Fishing Report

INSHORE – Tarpon fishing will take off during May as migratory fish arrive along our beaches. Also look for Spanish Mackerel (Mackerel, Spanish), Tripletail, Cobia and False Albacore (Bonito, Little Tunny) in the coastal gulf. Snook (Snook, Common) will move into passes and the surf and Reds (Drum,Red) and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) should feed heavily on shallow flats as baitfish become more plentiful. Trout, Blues (Bluefish), Spanish mackerel and more should be good options on deep grass flats of Sarasota Bay. Resident tarpon are usually the first to show up as they make their way out of rivers and creeks. As migratory Tarpon start to arrive this month, we should have schools of Tarpon moving both north and south along our beaches. Early arriving tarpon may be more aggressive due to less fishing pressure early in the season. Set up in their line of travel and wait for tarpon schools to move past and cast a DOA Baitbuster, a 4 inch CAL Shad, a live Crab or Pinfish to them. Once you’ve seen the first school of fish, you can concentrate your efforts in that lane since other schools should be following the same route. When they aren’t showing well on the surface, a live bait under a float in their travel lane may score. I’ve also done well blind casting a DOA Baitbuster or Swimming Mullet when there wasn’t much showing on the surface. Be quiet, using your electric trolling motor sparingly, especially in shallow water. Even though your 4-stroke outboard sounds quiet, it is no substitute for an electric trolling motor. Fly anglers should do well with a variety of bait fish or Crab fly patterns fished on floating or intermediate sink tip fly lines. Staking out or anchoring in shallow water on their travel route should result in some shots at fish. The best angle is a head on shot, followed by a quartering shot. A perpendicular shot may work if it’s timed perfectly, although casting too far beyond their line of travel will usually spook them. I use a push pole with an occasional assist from a trolling motor if I need to adjust my position to make a cast. Snook season is closed on the west coast of Florida this month. Since they will be spawning, use tackle heavy enough to catch and release them in a timely manner and handle them gently. Larger Snook will mostly be females and should always be supported horizontally rather than hung vertically by the jaw. You’ll find them in passes and in the surf. They will also stage around docks and bridges close to passes. Casting CAL jigs with shad tails and jerk worms or DOA Shrimp around docks and bridges close to passes should be effective. Small white flies, like my Grassett Snook Minnow, work well at night. One of the most fun ways to target snook is to walk the beach and cast CAL jigs, DOA shrimp or flies to them in the surf. Higher tides this month will mean that Reds will spend more time feeding on shallow flats. Look for them along mangrove shorelines and around oyster bars when the tide is high and in potholes or along sandbars when the tide is low. When fishing shallow water for Reds, be as quiet as possible. I prefer to use a push pole or wade. Reds are one of the most challenging species to catch on a fly. Since they can be very spooky, I often wade for them when fly fishing to keep a lower profile. You’ll also find big trout in many of the same shallow areas that you find Reds. The Terra Ceia Bay area, north Sarasota Bay and Gasparilla Sound are all good areas for Reds this month. Trout will be plentiful on deep grass flats. I prefer to cast CAL jigs and flies on sink tip fly lines for Trout. A DOA Deadly Combo also works very well. Drifting and casting ahead of the drift is usually the most productive method. Look for flats that have a good mix of grass and sand and good tidal flow. The Middleground and Radio Tower flats, Stephens Point and Bishops Point are all great trout areas in Sarasota Bay. You may find Pompano (Pompano, Florida), Bluefish and Spanish Mackerel on the same deep grass flats where trout are plentiful. They can be targeted in the same way as Trout, but you may need to use wire or heavy fluorocarbon leader when toothy fish are around. You may also find Spanish and King Mackerel (Mackerel, King), little tunny, Cobia and Tripletail in the coastal gulf. Keep your eyes open for surface activity such as diving birds, breaking fish or baitfish being forced out of the water, which could indicate the presence of Mackerel, Blues or little Tunny. Medium spinning tackle and 8 or 9-weight fly tackle should be heavy enough, although your Tarpon spinning and fly tackle is not too heavy for cobia. Look for Cobia either swimming on the surface or around navigational markers or buoys. I have also found Cobia swimming with schools of tarpon before. Tripletail may be found around crab trap floats or buoys, where they can be targeted with a DOA shrimp or CAL jig on spinning tackle. When fly fishing for tripletail, a floating line on an 8 or 9-weight fly rod with a shrimp or baitfish fly pattern, like my Grassett Flats Minnow, should get the job done. This is one of my favorite months of the year. If battling a big Tarpon isn’t for you, you should have plenty to do on both shallow and deep grass flats or in the coastal gulf. I’ll be spending my time targeting Tarpon in the coastal gulf unless conditions won’t allow it. There is something about casting a fly to a giant fish in shallow water! Whatever you choose to do, please limit your kill, don’t kill your limit! Tight Lines, Capt. Rick Grassett

Bradenton Fishing Report

INSHORE – Big Snook (Snook, Common) are turning up all over the place this week. All down the Sarasota bay and the rivers are full of them. The jetties are known to be holding a few good sizes as well. The water is perfect for them. Redfish (Drum, Red) are scattered this week and the reports have slowed down as the focus is on the Snook. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are around the Skyway bridge. Most are slot sized and there are a few oversized too. Bait is beginning to show up in this area and the grass flats so far however most anglers are using artificial still. Finding moving water is the key to hooking some great sizes.

OFFSHORE – There have not been reports of Kings (Mackerel, King) here. We expect to see them come in soon. This is the same case for the bait. Good sized Snapper (Snapper, Gray) are being caught about 3 miles out this week. There are also reports of Tuna at 50 miles as well. Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater) are on all the reefs 20 miles out and further. Grouper (Grouper, Gag) are on the bottom in 80 ft. Keep in mind they are closed until April 1st, see regulations for more details.

BAIT REPORT – Whitebait are showing up around the Skyway and grass flats this week. Discount Tackle Outlet has tons of great Tarpon gear for the upcoming season. Stop in and check out the great inventory.

Bradenton Fishing Report

INSHORE – Snook, Common are turning up in the grass flats along with some Trout (Seatrout, Spotted). The Redfish (Drum, Red) have been hit and miss. Shrimp is still the number one bait under a popping cork. Mirrodines in the 49 color is the best artificial. The tide shifts, both incoming or outgoing has produced well the past week. We have not seen any red tide anywhere so it is a good sign. Anywhere around the North bay has been good.

OFFSHORE – There are tons of Snapper (Snapper, Vermillion & Snapper, Red) and Grouper, Gag (that are catch and release) this week. The Kings (Mackerel, King) are beginning to show up on blue runners. They are over the reefs and anglers are trolling above them to hook some good sizes.

INSHORE – Anglers are throwing Shrimp to hook Sheepshead and Snapper, Gray around the docks this week. The pass is holding Seatrout, Spotted and some Mackerel (Mackerel, Spanish). There have also been reports of Ladyfish in this area as well. It is a bit windy however anglers are still managing to make it out for the hot bite this week.

Bradenton Fishing Report

INSHORE – There are a lot of small Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) on the grass flats this week. Throwing live Shrimp has been the trick to catching them early in the morning for the best bite. There are a lot of Sheepshead and Snapper, Mutton in the passes. Cut Shrimp is their favorite. Anglers are catching upwards of 20-30 fish this way.

OFFSHORE – Anglers are heading out to the 10 mile mark to take advantage of some good catches of Snapper, Gray and Grouper, Gag. The sizes are fairly small at this point. Farther out at 30 miles we are seeing Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater). Around 50 miles there are Tuna, Ajs and Pompano, Africa. There was a Sailfish (Billfish – Sailfish) sighting as well.

BAIT REPORT – 2 miles out there is Pinfish in 30 ft of water. Anglers are using Squid on a Sabiki rig as the water is still a little murky and the scent helps. Economy Tackle Paddlesports is having a Kayak Fishing Seminar March 31st. Stop in and check it out!

Bradenton Fishing Report

INSHORE – Anglers have been throwing live Shrimp on a jig with a bit of weight to catch some great Snapper, Gray and Sheepshead around the docks and passes. The bite has been hot and consistent. The bay is also holding some Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) in the grass flats, to the drop offs and the edges up to 24 inches. Anglers are using live Shrimp for them as well. We expect to see this continue into the weekend.

OFFSHORE – Weather conditions have really put a damper on offshore fishing.

INSHORE – Sheepshead and lots of them! They are the target for most anglers this week. There are some Snapper, Gray and some Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) as well. Artificials can be fished slow like a DOA paddle tails in gold fleck with a dark body. Anglers are fishing around docks to find them. Shrimp is a great alternative. Most anglers are staying inside as it has been too rough to reach the offshore this week.

Bradenton Fishing Report

INSHORE – There are some Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) hanging around the bay this week. They are being caught on hard plastic so far. By Turtle Beach there are some Pompano, Florida that are swimming however there is also Red Tide in this area so you will have to find the clean water. There are also Sheepshead and Trout in this area, again when you find clean water. There are some decent places to fish right off the beach. The Red Tide is reaching up to 10 miles off the beach.

OFFSHORE – Past the red tide at 45 miles there were some Dolphin and Bonito, Little Tunny hitting throughout the weedlines. We expect they are still biting however the weather has been too unfavorable for most anglers to get out. We hope to see things clear up for the weekend.

Bradenton Fishing Report

INSHORE – Things are slower so far this week. The Sheepshead are biting at the bridge pilings. Reds (Drum, Red) are on the docks in the manatee river. The 3 and 7 miles reefs are still producing Hogfish on really light tackle with whole or pieces of Shrimp. There are some Snapper, Gray turning up in the same area. The shallow reefs have been the hotspot so far this week and is the target of most anglers. More G Loomis products will be coming in this week, stop in and stock up on these great products with a lifetime warranty!

OFFSHORE – The water has been pretty turned up due to the weather in this area. Things are beginning to clear up at this point so anglers should be able to head out soon. There have been some Grouper, Red turning up from 50 ft out on hard bottom. The bite has not been hot but is expected to increase when conditions are more favorable.

Bradenton Fishing Report

INSHORE – There is a nice mixed bag of fish in this area so far. The mangroves are producing some great Drum, Black. Anglers have been throwing live Shrimp off the bottom. The slower presentation is a bit better this week since the temperature is cooler and the fish are moving slower. There are some Sheepshead in this area along with Jack, Crevalle and Snapper, Gray. They are all turning up in decent sizes at this point. We are also seeing some great Sheepshead turn up on the docks in the channel. The best bait seems to be Shrimp as it is more attractive to these fish in the winter. This bite is expected to continue into the weekend.

Bradenton Fishing Report

INSHORE – The weather has been far from ideal in the area this week however some anglers have still managed to get on the water. In the bay there are some Sheepshead swimming on structures. Live Fiddler Crabs are always a good choice of bait to hook them. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are holding up in the deeper grass flats throughout the North area of the bay. Shrimp under popping cork are working best for them. The Snook, Common are starting to migrate into the creeks and deeper channels. Keep in mind they are catch and release only right now. Reds (Drum, Red) are hard to find but they are there for anglers who put their time in.

OFFSHORE – Despite the cold and rainy weather there is still a great bite offshore. At roughly the ten mile mark anglers are catching Grouper, Red that they can keep within slot size. There are also Grouper, Gag in the area however they are catch and release at this point. Cut squid, Sardines or cut Octopus are working well as bait. There are also Pinfish swimming the area that can be caught on a Sabiki setup and used as bait too.

BAIT REPORT – Sabiki Pinfish in the deeper water 10 miles out.

Bradenton Fishing Report

INSHORE – It’s been a little slow with the recent fronts however anglers have managed to get out and take advantage of the big Bull Red (Drum, Red) bite as they are still schooling. Typically, gold spoons or Shrimp will attract them. The fish prefer live Shrimp however soft plastic artificials will perform great too. Snook, Common have been doing well around the lights at night. First light jigs are doing well to hook them.

OFFSHORE – There are still some Mackerel, King waiting to be caught in the offshore for anglers who can manage to get on the water. They are the main target for anglers heading this way as just about everything else is closed at this point.

Bradenton Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Red (Drum, Red) bite has been consistent around the docks this week. We are now seeing increased reports of Sheepshead now that the temperature has dropped. They are loving Fiddler Crabs which is not unusual. The Reds are preferring live Shrimp or similar artificials such as a Vudu Shrimp. The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) bite has been spotty so far however with the cooler weather we are expecting an increased bite and heavier fish in the next few weeks. There are no signs of Mackerel, Spanish or Pompano, Florida so far this week.

OFFSHORE – Weather permitting the Mackerel, King bite has been steady along with some Tuna, Blackfin in the deep water. The current front is limiting most anglers to the inside. Grouper, Red is now open so a lot of anglers are excited to get to the offshore, hopefully by the tail end of the week. The bite is expected to be extremely good.

Bradenton Fishing Report

INSHORE – There are still some Mackerel, Spanish swimming the area so far this week. They have been chasing after spoons mostly. Anglers are beginning to see the Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) come back in even though the water is warm. Trout are preferring saltwater assassins either weedless or on a jighead. We are beginning to see Pompano, Florida show up as well. Reds (Drum, Red) have been holding up in the North Bay and around the mangroves and channels in Sarasota. Snapper, Yellowtail are in close too. They will eat almost anything live.

OFFSHORE – There is plenty of action in the offshore this week. Hogfish are plentiful and aren’t too far out for anglers looking for shorter trips. Mackerel, King are swimming in about 50 ft of water along with some Bonito, Little Tunny and Bluefish that are chasing the bait on the top. Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater) are beginning to come in and the bite should pick up in the next few weeks. Most anglers are tossing Squid or Pinfish to the bottom as the fish are loving the live bait this week, the Grouper, Gag especially.

BAIT REPORT – Pinfish have been around but are difficult to trap this week. There are still a few pods of Mullet swimming and although they are spotty if you find yourself on a pod you will have no problem stocking up.

Bradenton Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Redfish (Drum, Red) bite is pretty good. They are swimming the shallower water this week and are loving artificials similar to Shrimp and of course live bait. There have also been reports of Snook, Common mixed in with them. The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) bite has slowed down due to remnants of Red Tide. This is expected to pick back up once the water clears up.

OFFSHORE – There are lots of great sized Mangrove Snapper (Snapper, Gray) swimming the water this week. They are holding up in roughly 80-120 ft this week and most anglers are using cut bait or Squid to hook them. The sizes have been pretty good and we hope to see this continue into next week. There are no signs of Mackerel, King yet this week.

BAIT REPORT – There is still quite a bit of Mullet swimming this week. They are working well for inshore bait. Stock up while you can, Discount Tackle is closed on Christmas Day & New Year’s Day.

Bradenton Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Red Tide is almost cleared up in the area. There has been Bonito, Little Tunny, Mackerel, Spanish, and Tripletail in the nearshore just off the beach as well. They are all within a mile of the beach and are coming up in decent sizes so far. There are very little sightings reported from the Bay. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Flounder (Flounder, Southern & Flounder, Gulf) are doing well. The Trout are hitting especially well in the morning on the outgoing tide. Anglers are using topwater baits while the first before the sun is fully up then soft plastics or jerkbaits over potholes through to the afternoon. This is also working well for Reds (Drum, Red) and Snook, Common. The Snook have not moved out yet due to the warmer water. They are shallower however in grass flats and potholes. Their best catch is on the low tide around the docks and creeks.

OFFSHORE – Kings (Mackerel, King) have been plentiful in the area and are mixed in with a good bite of Cobia as well. They have been swimming just beyond the nearshore reefs from roughly 4-20 miles off the shore. Economy Tackle Paddlesports will be holding a Winter Shore Fishing Seminar Thursday December 17th in the evening. Call for details.

Bradenton Fishing Report

INSHORE – Anglers are seeing some remnants of Red Tide showing up in Sarasota Bay this week. The inshore has been a tough fish however anyone fishing the bridges and docks may have some luck with Sheepshead and Reds (Drum, Red). There hasn’t been much Snook, Common yet this week.

OFFSHORE – Kings (Mackerel, King) are continuing their bite this week in the offshore. Anywhere from 2-7 miles is holding some decent sizes however the bigger weights and numbers can be found around the 7 mile mark on the artificial reefs. The warm water has kept them in the area and they are now bigger and better. They are taking live Pilchards and Threadfin to match the bait run. Chumming over the reefs and putting out flatlines seems to be the most productive setup so far this week.

BAIT REPORT – Pilchards and Threadfins are swimming the offshore this week. The fish are following and they are also working well as bait. Anglers have been catching them around the skyway and piers so far. Discount Tackle has HUGE reductions on non-current Kayak inventory. Stop in today to see what’s in store!

Bradenton Fishing Report

INSHORE – Reds (Drum, Red), Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Snook, Common are still biting inshore this week. Surprisingly, the Snook continue to have a good bite, even along the beach as the water is unseasonably warm. The Red TIde is just about gone and anglers are beginning to make their way back out. There have been no reports of Mackerel, Spanish or Mackerel, King so far this week.

OFFSHORE – The offshore bite has consisted of mainly Grouper, Gag this week. Anglers have brought them in pretty steadily over the past few days in decent sizes. They have been trolling Xwrap 30s and Stretch 30 plugs. Gags can be found in roughly 30-40 ft of water this week. There have not been any reports of Wahoo yet this week and unfortunately Gag Grouper closed midweek.

BAIT REPORT – Pilchards are still swimming in this area. Don’t miss Economy Tackle Water Sports Center’s Kayak Fishing Seminar on December 3 at 6pm with their experts Mike MacDonald and JD!

Bradenton Fishing Report

INSHORE – There is still some remnants of Red Tide in the Sarasota Bay however anglers have been heading North to Tampa bay or South to Venice. The Snook, Common bite has been good in these areas. Our sources also suggest fishing the hard East wind that moves the Mackerel, Spanish and Bonito, Little Tunny right to the edge of the beach. The Whiting (Kingfish, Southern) have been hitting right off the piers. Whitebait has been working best for the Whiting, or alternatively trolling plugs if anglers are having a hard time locating Whitebait as they have become thin.

OFFSHORE – There is a good bite in the deep water this week anywhere from 50-100 miles out. Anglers have been bottom fishing for Grouper (Grouper, Red & Grouper, Gag) although they should make themselves aware of what is open in their specific locations. Squid or Octopus have been the best bait to drop this week. There has even been a report of a 50 lb Grouper, Snowy reeled in this week at 90 miles. The Wahoo bite has continued to do well too. 90-100 miles off the shore will be the key water and anglers are catching them on the troll.

BAIT REPORT – There are no reports of bait running this week. Don’t miss Economy Tackle Water Sports Center’s Kayak Fishing Seminar on December 3 at 6pm with their experts Mike MacDonald and JD!

Bradenton Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Tough wind has not made fishing in the deep water easy this week. Anglers who have made it out have reported a decent bite on a few fish. Snapper, Yellowtail have been coming in with good sizes and numbers. At roughly 130 ft of water there are reports of Snapper up to 25 inches. The Gags (Grouper, Gag) have begun to slow down. The bite was hot last week in the Skyway shipping channel with sizes of 30+ inches. Anglers have been trolling with big plugs for either species. There are some scattered Tuna, Blackfin in roughly 80 ft. of water along with some Grouper, Red which are closed in federal waters.

INSHORE – Despite the leftovers of the recent Red Tide there are lots of Snook, Common biting in the rivers. Reds (Drum, Red) have been slow and there are some reports of Pompano, Florida in the passes. Lots of small Seatrout, Spotted are swimming however nothing in really big sizes. Most anglers are using live bait as there is a lot swimming and and the fish do not seemed to be fooled by artificials this week.

BAIT REPORTS – Threadfins and Sardines are thick in this area right now. Most anglers are live baiting as they are so plentiful.

Bradenton

INSHORE – Due to some remaining red tide, inshore fishing has not been easy the past few weeks. Despite these conditions our sources have continued to report Snook, Common, Seatrout, Spotted and Redfish (Drum, Red) turning up. The tide has actually made them more concentrated which helps some anglers out. The trick is to find clean water and live bait, to increase the chance of reeling something in.

OFFSHORE – There has been a pretty solid bite offshore and most anglers are deciding to head farther out to avoid the red tide inshore. Mackerel, King have been coming up in good sizes anywhere from 1 – 15 miles out. Anglers can head out even farther if they want and the fishing will still be good. Sharks (Shark, Lemon & Shark, Black Tip) continue to swim in the same waters, so anglers should not be surprised if they lose their bait to one of these. Boaters are live baiting using Pilchards, which happens to be the easiest live bait catch for this area. On the bottom, Grouper, Red has had a decent bite and begun to move in. Snapper, Gray has started to turn up more frequently, once again preferring Pilchards or cut Sardines.

BAIT REPORT – Pilchards are running thick off the beach which is perfect as they seem to be every fish’s preference. Economy Tackle Water Sports Center will be hosting a Fishing Seminar November 12 at 6PM. Don’t miss this great opportunity to improve your catch.

INSHORE – Due to warm water temperatures most fish have remained offshore at this time. Once the cooler conditions hit we expect to see more results inshore in the coming weeks. Should you decide to fish from shore or shallow water you can always rely on our Tips feature which provides plenty of suggestions and information on your favorite fish. Economy Tackle Water Sports Center will be hosting a Fishing Seminar November 12 at 6PM. Don’t miss this great opportunity to improve your catch.

OFFSHORE – Mackerel, Spanish have been absolutely everywhere lately. Anglers cannot keep their hook in the water anywhere from 50-100 ft. They are chumming and seem to catch more sitting still. Mackerel, King have also had a fairly good bite along with Cobia and a bunch of small Sharks (Shark, Lemon & Shark, Black Tip) about 3-4 ft. long. They are mostly chumming for those as well. Live bait such as Pilchards has been working best. The warm water has been keeper the fish out farther. Grouper, Red has been ok but it has not been cold enough to push any Grouper, Gags in. The bites have been happening on Cutbait and Pinfish around the piles and structures 50+ ft deep. Economy Tackle Water Sports Center will be hosting a Fishing Seminar November 12 at 6PM. Don’t miss this great opportunity to improve your catch.

BAIT REPORT – There’s not much for bait running to report at this time. Economy Tackle Water Sports Center will be hosting a Fishing Seminar November 12 at 6PM. Don’t miss this great opportunity to improve your catch.

Sarasota / Bradenton Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – A hard East wind has made offshore fishing difficult for anglers in the past week. Luckily this has not hindered the great King (Mackerel, King) and Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) bite at all. About 7 miles out in the shipping channel you can troll using big silver spoons and are likely to hook one or both of these since they are everywhere. No bait is needed as they’re hitting the spoons without hesitation. This bite is expected to continue for the next little while.

INSHORE – Wind conditions have not seemed to have a huge impact on inshore fishing so far. The Reds (Drum, Red) and Snook (Snook, Common) are beginning to move back in with the high tide. Our sources have reported using live bait, Whitebait and shiners you can expect to hook either of these with no trouble at all.

BAIT REPORTS – There are still lots of Whitebait running in the grass flats so it is a good idea to stock up since they are working so well inshore. For suggestions on what to use you can always check out our Tips feature which provides information and recommendations for the fish of your choice.

Sarasota / Bradenton Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – With the booming winds we are not surprised no one has roughed it offshore. Although winds are expected to slow down it might not be enough to get out on the water this weekend. Hopefully next week we will see a drop in knots and some big fish to make up for this week.

INSHORE – If you’re looking to stay close to the beach the shore are riddled with Triple Tail which are biting Live Shrimp and lots of them. You will also see some Cobia and Spanish Mackerel turn up using Bonita, Mackerel, Threadfin or Whitebait. Anglers will be looking to see these about a quarter mile offshore. When in doubt remember, you can use the birds as a guide to finding these fish below.

BAIT REPORTS – Whitebait is a crowd favourite at Economy Tackle Water Sports Center. It consists of about 90 percent of their team choice and takes an average of two casts to hook a fish.

Sarasota / Bradenton Fishing Report

INSHORE – There are gaggles of Trout in the North bay. There have been a lot of Trout ranging from keepers to little ones. An average day has been about 15 to 20 Trout. The Redfish and Mangrove Snapper have been in the North bay as well. The Redfish and Trout have been taking gulps and gold spoons. In the passes, there have been some Pompano and some good sized Mangrove Snapper. The Mangrove Snapper have been taking shrimp. There have been a few Kingfish caught, but they’ve been quite small. There are also a lot of Spanish Mackerel in the area. Really good night bite for Snook going on. We’ve been catching good sized Snook on large Ladyfish.

BAIT REPORT – If you’re looking to catch bait, you’re best to head elsewhere, because the bait here is quite small still.

Sarasota / Bradenton Fishing Report

Inshore: Randy at Economy Tackle offers the following tips: The Redfish are beginning to set up and whitebait is good, but anglers will need ¼ inch mesh in their nets until the bigger whitebait begins to show up. The Reds are striking top water lures in the morning and cut bait in the afternoons. The Trout and Snapper bite on white bait has been pretty good in the taller grass areas.

Offshore: Bottom fishing in 50-60 feet of water with pretty much any kind of cut bait has been very good with Lane Snapper and Red Grouper on hard bottom surfaces. Anglers trying to get more Snapper would do well to chum it up a bit. Gag Grouper has been pretty slow lately. Anglers are getting some Blackfin Tuna and Wahoo about 60 miles out with dark baits and black and purple and blue and purple feathers. Xrap 30’s have also been effective.

Sarasota / Bradenton Fishing Report

Offshore: Grouper and Snapper are showing up in numbers out about 9-10 miles where the reefs are located. Anglers are using Sardines, Octopus and Squid for bait on the bottom with a 4-5 ounce weight. Good to note that Hogfish season is closed to harvest!

Inshore: There’s plenty of bait (White Bait and Greenies) pretty much everywhere in the bay, especially in the middle ground area in 4-5 feet of water. The Snook bite is off the hook as the fish are hitting everything from lures to cut bait. The night fishing for Snook has been fantastic! The passes are holding a lot of decent sized Mangrove Snapper hitting the Greenies and the good old standby, shrimp. Anglers report seeing quite a few Redfish up in the Buttonwood area.

Sarasota / Bradenton Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – The Amberjacks are biting, but nowhere close to shore. The season is open right now and most of the bite is happening 30 plus miles out, and if you make it out to the 50 mile range they are really nice out there. The Red Grouper are abundant pretty much everywhere but the 95-125 foot depth is the sweet spot for them. And the bigger ones are out at 135-145, there just are fewer of them, so if you want a big fish that means you are going to have to play it patient. As for Gag Grouper, Don at All About Fishing hasn’t heard much, but is willing to bet that people are catching them – they would rather lose a limb than give up their spots though. They could also just be slower than normal, maybe because the bay is hot, but where they went is anyones guess. No reports of Tripletail, Cobia, Spanish, or Kings, but a month from now the Spanish Mackerel will come, and then the Kingfish, then the Cobia and Tripletail. So keep an eye out.

INSHORE – Two words; summer heat. It is keeping things slow during the day. Most of the good fishing is happening early or late, and the night fishing has been awesome. The Tarpon and Snook around the bridges and dock lights are really active. Not to mention at night it is more comfortable for us and the fish. If you go early and late the snook on the beach is great. There are Trout and Redfish on the flats, but most of the Redfish are in the deeper canals because it is too hot on the flats. They seem to be going deeper, the Trout are scarcer too. Whiting is good on the beach and in the passes right now, usually they thin out, but they are around and have been strong all summer. The Flounder are nice if you can catch them. Your go to bait for almost all of the fish listed is Shrimp. But artificials like the gulp are good for Redfish because they are scented. The fish are off the flats right now because of the heat, so gold spoons are not very good right now, even though they are usually a great lure. The Snook are on white jerk baits and paddle tails with lighter jig heads. There have also been quite a few Snook caught on the fly, and if you plan on fly fishing go with the bunny fur because the scent will stick to the skin part of the fur.

BAIT REPORT – Whitebait is around and lots of people are catching it on the beach and flats. With a little chum you can get tons of them up and into your cooler.

Great selection and great deals on combos starting at 45 – 150.

Bradenton Fishing Report

Offshore: Don points out that although the kingfish, Spanish mackerel, cobia, and triple tail typically show up in the fall, the yellowtail and grouper bite is pretty good right now. The yellowtail don’t show up that often until the middle of summer when the weather is warm, so this is the right time to get out there on the reefs where they are hanging out, brave the heat, and catch this particular species of snapper. Anglers are chumming them up or drifting bait back into them with light jig heads or chunks of sardine with no weight at all. Many of the fish are hanging out midway above the wrecks.

Inshore: White bait is plentiful in the upper part of the bay. Anglers have been baiting up and fishing the deeper grass for large trout (20 inches plus) and mangrove snapper which have moved into the bay in large numbers. In addition to white bait, a lot of anglers are also using pinfish since the shrimp are usually fairly small this time of year. The white bait or pinfish floated under a popping cork is producing some great fish! As far as artificial bait is concerned, mirrodine in the 49 color and sebile lures (amber fashion and white lady) are working best.

Of Note: The shop has just received a new shipment of shirts and yeti wear items such as coolers, ramblers, hoppers, coldsters, and a little bit of just about everything Yeti makes.

Bradenton Fishing Report

Offshore- Fishing farther out has just begun picking up again due to the inclement weather. The Snapper bite has been pretty good from 3-7 miles out, bottom fishing and chumming. The bait of choice seems to be Squid or small Sardines on free lines. The store is carrying the new Stradic reels, especially the 2500 and the 3000, with the 4000’s expected at any time.

Inshore- Anglers here are getting quite a few over-slot Redfish on white bait and light colored soft plastics, mostly in the early mornings due to the heat. As the water inshore warms up, the fish begin to move out into cooler water.

Bradenton Fishing Report

Offshore: The weather this summer has not been very conducive for offshore fishing. Thunderstorms and heavy rain have been rolling in during the morning hours and afternoon. We normally get rain and storms in the afternoon, but lately we have been getting them as early as 7 o’clock in the morning. If you want to go offshore be very careful to check the weather before launching. Fishing offshore has been fair at best. There are reports of catching Spanish mackerel and a few Kingfish off the near shore reefs that are only 3 to 6 miles out. These reefs might be your best bet for catching fish for right now, especially if the weather looks questionable. For the grouper fisherman, you have to go 15 to 25 miles out to find what I think is the best table fare in the Gulf. Inshore fishing: With the rain and thunderstorms we have had almost daily, inshore fishing is your best bet. In Charlotte Harbor, there have been reports of Spanish mackerel, tarpon and cobia being caught at Alligator and Cape Haze Reefs. Highway 41 bridge has been another good location for hooking into these fish. Fishing the passes from Captiva to Sarasota Bay will produce some redfish, tarpon, and snapper. Turtle and Bull Bays are producing Snook and Redfish. The grass flats are still producing Sea Trout, but you need to fish deeper than the usual 3-5 feet. During the hot summer months the Trout are holding in water 6-8 feet deep. Fishing closer to the bottom with a Texas rig will produce more fish.

Surf/Pier: Walking the beaches early in the morning will give you a good chance for catching Snook. Don’t cast your lure too far out, the fish are close to the beach in the first trough. Sometimes it’s best if you can cast parallel to the beach. Soft plastics and twitch baits are working well for catching Snook. The piers in Port Charlotte are producing a variety of fish. Snook, Cobia, Sharks, Trout, and Mangrove snapper are being caught on shrimp, bait fish and cut bait. Throwing spoons and Gotcha lures work well for catching Spanish, which is one of my favorite fish to catch. If you aren’t catching any Spanish with these lures, you might not be retrieving them fast enough. You should pick up some jacks as well, they are a hard pulling fish. Other ways for catching Spanish is using popping corks with a live shrimp or free lining the shrimp on a weighted jig head without any other weight. When I had a boat, sometimes I would anchor and chum for Spanish, this would also bring the 3-4 foot bonnet heads and Blacktip Sharks around as well. The Skyway Bridge between Tampa and St. Petersburg is producing Spanish and good size snapper, especially in the early mornings and at night.

Bait Report: Baitfish has been hard to come by, especially the traditional white bait found in the harbor. The best chance to catch baitfish is during the incoming tide. Use a cast net or a Sabiki rig with small hooks. Live shrimp is always a good go to bait for catching a variety of fish.

Sarasota / Bradenton Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – There are Red Grouper in 40+ feet of water. Also try fishing for Gag Grouper in the shipping channel on the east side by Port Manatee. Other than that, offshore fishing has been a little quiet because of the weather. There are some small schoolie Dolphin in 120 foot of water, about 30 miles out. Amberjacks are closed too, so the best fishing bite just be some of those nice Gag Grouper people have been bringing in.

INSHORE – Scott over at Discount Tackle Outlet mentioned that the Redfish have been picking up south by long bar in Sarasota. The big Snook are along the beaches right now because it is that time of year. They are also in the passes. If you are fishing along the beach expect to find a few Tarpon too. Some cut Ladyfish or Threadfins works wonderfully. If you are going to drop all the way to the bottom you can probably do better with the dead bait. Tarpon are around the bridges in the inter coastal eating crabs at night.

BAIT REPORT – Bait is small, but plentiful right now. Give it a few weeks.

Bradenton Fishing Report

OFFSHORE: This is the rainy season in southwest Florida, so be prepared for a shower or two, especially during the afternoon. Winds will be northeast for the next day or so at 10-15 mph. Snapper have moved out into the deeper water about 10 miles out and Grouper are plentiful at 12 to 25 miles out from Boca Grande using cut bait just off the bottom. Snapper and cobia are picking up a bit and closer to shore, spotted sea trout, pompano and flounder are taking live shrimp on bottom rigs with sliding hook and leader setups. Charters going out between 12 and 20 miles are coming back with some large grouper.

INSHORE: When the wind picks up out in the Gulf, there will be more fishing in the Inter-coastal, especially at the West Wall of the Peace River, Turtle Bay, Bird Island and Three Sisters off Boca Grande Island. Live shrimp with three feet of leader is attracting spotted sea trout, silver trout, ladyfish, Spanish mackerel, blues, and an occasional redfish. Snook and redfish love to hang out under the mangroves, especially where there are oyster beds. Successful anglers are skipping live shrimp under the mangrove overhangs and also using bobbers with about 15 inches of leader and # 1 circle hooks. Out on the flats, in 6-9 feet of water, deadly combos are working when the water is fairly calm and Tsunami Zig Jig Pros are working when the surface is not so smooth. Most fish are hitting the jig lures as they drop, and it is not unusual for fish to hit the jig as soon as it enters the water. Large ladyfish, blues and mackerel are great fun on 7 foot rods with 12-15 pound test. Check the leader often to make sure it’s not weakened by these larger fish. Drifting over the flats works better than setting anchor, and watch for the color changes in the water, as dark indicates weeds and light indicates sandy bottom. Some of the larger fish wait at the edge of the weeds for something to come past them near the sandy bottom areas. When fish are there and then suddenly gone, drift back over the hot spot several times and there will be no disappointment.

PIERS/BRIDGES: At the Highway 41 bridges look for snook and tarpon in the early morning and again in the evening, cobia and small sharks during the day along with a few trout using shrimp or light brown colored lures and artificial shrimp. At the Bay Shore Piers, spotted and silver trout with an occasional shark. Gilchrist Pier is producing some jacks and sharks. Tom Adams Bridge in Englewood is the hot spot for mangrove snapper, many of the keepers at 11-14 inches and shrimp is what they seem to prefer right now. Again, as with all of the structures offering shade, snook are prevalent in the morning and the evening, so see if you can sneak a snook with live shrimp or white spinner bait. Laishley Pier is a good bet for cobia and Tarpon. The tarpon are hanging out in the deeper water beyond the end of the pier, so be prepared to cast out a ways and then get ready for a fight! El Jobean Pier has attracted its fair share of snapper, and they will hit live and frozen shrimp, again, using an oval sliding sinker with about 15-20 inches of leader. The mangrove snapper are a sure bet, especially if the kids are anxious to catch something. Don’t forget the sunblock, even when it seems like the clouds will hang around. That Florida sun has a way of popping out now and then, and the fishing is more fun if we don’t get burned.

Sarasota / Bradenton Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Colton over at Discount Tackle Outlet was telling me about how hot the Red Grouper has been, and the Yellowtail bite has been out of this world. He went out and caught 20 of them about 30 miles out. Gags just opened, so they should be hitting around most structures, but alot of people will be targetting them so be prepared for the competition. Trolling out to about 50 miles there is small Dolphin and bigger ones if you are willing to head 60-70 miles out. You could get lucky if you find a weedline that has been blown in, but that is a pretty big “if”. A customer of theirs caught a Wahoo at 60 miles the other day. Between 70-80 miles there are reports of Yellowfin Tuna. If you plan on going bottom fishing drop down some live pinfish. If you want to target the Dolphin; troll Ballyhoo.

INSHORE – Right now on the inshore the SNook is super hot and the bigger ones are moving out to the beaches. Redfish are here and there, and you are going to stumble onto a good number of fry bait and a couple big Trout. The Tarpon are also heading out. There are live Pilchards also around the Skyway and those make great bait.

BAIT REPORT – Pinfish is around so get a sabiki and then go out to any bridge or marker offshore. There is also Threadfin Herring and Pilchards at the marker when the tide is moving; preferably going out.

Sarasota / Bradenton Fishing Report

OFFSHORE–  Offshore there isn’t much going on out there until Gag Grouper season opens up July 1st! So you have that to look forward to. However, there is also some Snapper out there if you have your heart set on .

INSHORE– Snook is really good! You’ll want to fish for those at night in the passes or beaches where they are really thick. Try using some Whitebait for that. The Tarpon bite is slowing down as the weather gets hotter and they get used to being baited with Crab so they are starting to spook.

BAIT– Pinfish and Grunts, Whitebait out here.

Sarasota / Bradenton Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – If you’re heading out you’ll want to head directly on the Wrecks and Reefs for trolling. On the reef you’ll want to use live bait. In terms of bottom fishing is you’ll find Scamps and Triggerfish particularly strong about 40-50 miles out There are also Grouper and Snapper out there. For them you’ll want to use dead bait and chum. Squid, Sardines and Shrimp are all good for chumming.

INSHORE – The fishing is hot everywhere inshore! The Snook, Redfish, Trout, Ladyfish and Bluefish are great! The Ladyfish also make good bait. Pompano are also in the area but they are more evasive as the weather gets hotter.

BAIT REPORT – Out by the markers there is lots of bait that you can Sabiki up. There is also whitebait everywhere.

Bradenton Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – The bite is good for Red Snapper. Try bottom fishing the around the wrecks and hard bottoms for Red Snapper. Captain Kris of Tailing Tails recommends using live bait like live Shiners but you can also use Whitebait.

INSHORE – The Snook have been awesome! Captain Kris recently caught 40 Snook in one day! You’ll find the Snook in the flats and they tend to be biting on Shiners. Tide has every to do with it,  so as long as it is moving you’re good to go. While the fishing is good now, it won’t last forever. The Snook are expected to make their way out to the Gulf to Spawn in July and August.

BAIT REPORT – There is bait everywhere, you’ll find tons of White Bait and Shiners.
