Boca Grande Fishing Report

INSHORE – The wind has made offshore fishing tough, but when anglers can get out they are finding that the bottom bite hasn’t suffered much. Grouper and Snapper are turning up within 12 miles this week. Rocky structure on the bottom will be your best place to target them using live bait. Keep in mind you may need to take a look at the regulations on your Pro Angler App to determine what you can harvest. Cut live bait will bring the most success. The Kings can be found within 20 miles. Anglers are looking for bait balls on the bottom for the best place to cast their live bait setup. If all else fails, anglers can almost always find Permit swimming around so it’s always a good idea to keep silver dollar sized Blue Crabs on board!

OFFSHORE – It’s been a bit tough to get a handle on the fishing throughout the area this week. With all the recent weather the fish are a bit confused and the bite hasn’t been as easy as we would hope. The ol’ reliables are still hanging around. Redfish continue to bite, but are preferring live bait. Port Charlotte has been a particularly active area, especially throughout the harbor. There is a nice variety of fish throughout the harbor area and anglers aren’t having trouble hooking some of them as bycatches. Snook are hit or miss depending on where you are. Most are over slot and a lot of fun to target, finding them has been the challenge this week. Using live bait in the passes has been productive overall. Fishing as natural presentations as possible has been the best strategy this week. They are already starting to improve as we see more consistent weather. It’s been no surprise that Sheepshead are holding up on structure. Mackerel are beginning to make their way in. Permit are schooled up and spread over several areas, and Tarpon are hiding in some of the rivers. These species haven’t been as hot as we would like to see however we have no doubt they will heat up very soon.

INSHORE – Things are turning on and the fish have shown up. Inside, Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are doing very well. They are in the 17-22 inch range taking jerk baits or live Shrimp under a popping cork. Nice Snook (Snook, Common) to 26 inches are also turning up and they are providing great action for anglers.

OFFSHORE – The reefs are holding nice Vermillion Snapper and Mangroves (Snapper, Gray & Snapper, Vermillion). Great Cobia have also been landed by trolling. They are schooled up and sometimes we will get multiple hits at the same time. Head to roughly 40 feet of water and troll 20 feet down at 4 miles per hour to find them as they make their way back through. Grouper (Grouper, Gag & Grouper, Red) are also swimming the bottom providing a decent catch and release bite. Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) have also been caught in the same 40 foot area.

Boca Grande Fishing Report

INSHORE – Resident Tarpon are cruising the flats. There has been a few scattered in the 20 Foot Holes throughout the Harbors, as well as PGI Canal and Alligator Creek Reef to name a few of the hot areas Fishin’ Franks provided this week. They are taking a variety of baits from Marco through Venice however the best bite has come out of Port Charlotte.
Along the bushes and oyster bars we are seeing great Redfish and Snook. Moving water is the key to finding them. With the fluctuating temperatures the Reds are preferring live bait such as Pilchards along with a variety of soft plastics. The Snook are becoming a bit lethargic to the North with the drop in temperature however they should heat up well once we see some consistently nice weather.
As usual Sheepshead are holding up on their typical structures taking halved Shrimp on a 4 or 6 hook wit a Split Shot.

OFFSHORE – The offshore has had quite the mixed bag of fish this week. On the bottom, the bite has been successful for those targeting Grouper, Amberjack and Snapper. The Snapper aren’t picky, so don’t worry too much about what you are sending down to them. They seem to be providing a consistent bite no matter what. Grouper are a bit tougher. They are preferring live bait. Amberjack are now closed, but if you are looking for an active catch and release bite then this is your fish.
Closer to the top anglers have spotted Bonito, Blackfin, Spanish and Kings scattered from Marco to Venice. The numbers aren’t outstanding, but they’ll all be a good fish to target if you’re looking for a bit of a challenge.

Boca Grande Fishing Report

INSHORE – Despite the rough weather there are plenty of areas to fish this week that are producing well. Juvenile and sub adult Tarpon are moving out of the rivers. Snook are still in the river at Fort Myers but most are small with few legal sizes. Further North, Punta Gorda Isle Canals are loaded with juvenile Tarpon and a good variety of Snook. They were beginning to fire up however the recent cold front may have them a bit more scattered and lethargic until favorable conditions return. This week the hottest Snook and Tarpon have turned up out of the Port Charlotte area. Check out the Pro Angler App report for more details.
Redfish are sporadic up and down the coast. Typical areas are holding fish that are taking Sardines or Shrimp. Trout are also hit or miss but prefer a popping cork combo, scented plastic on a jig or can even be caught on the drift. Occasionally you’ll find Jacks or Ladyfish mixed in. They are heating up just in time for the bait run. Mullet, Whitebait, Threadfins and Pinfish are just beginning to make an appearance.

OFFSHORE – The bite has been tough offshore this week as many anglers have had a difficult time finding a weather window to head out. Prior to the front the Snapper, Amberjack, Kings and Tuna were all beginning to heat up and provide steady action for anglers. This week we are seeing a different picture. Snapper are still around however the closer, nearshore bite is a bit more successful. Heading out to 40 to 60 feet using live bait is your best bet. Some are even finding limits of Lanes towards Venice. Grouper and scattered Amberjack have been mixed in and caught while targeting the Snapper.
Kings are a lot closer this week and can be found less than 18 miles out. Spanish Mackerel may be caught as well. We expect the cold weather to have pushed them out by next week.

Boca Grande Fishing Report

INSHORE – Snook season is underway in the gulf fish of all sizes have been cooperating despite an unseasonal weather pattern. There have been a lot of anglers finding success in the Caloosahatchee River near Fort Myers as well as Bull Bay near Boca Grande. You should be able to get by throwing small Shrimp and bait patterns. Our best report for Redfish came from Fishin Franks in Port Charlotte this week. You can find them swimming the 41 bridge to Eagles Cut. Potholes, Sandbars and cutoffs are fishing well. DOA in white or Shad on a weedless hook is working well to fish them as if you are fishing for Bass. Snook are mixed in. Fishin Franks had a lot to say about the fishing around Port Charlotte and Boca Grande this week, you can view their full report in the Pro Angler App. Your typical fish can almost always be found throughout the area. Sheepshead are thick in Marco, Sanibel and Bonito. Pompano are swimming the outside bars with Cobia and Flounder. Seatrout can be caught around mouths of Cutoffs taking Shrimp while Black Drum are holding up on bridges and structure in the harbor.

OFFSHORE – If you wanted to target fish that can’t be found year round, this is the time to fish Southwest Florida! Good sizes of Kingfish have been caught off of Naples and starting into Sanibel. We expect Sanibel and Port Charlotte to fire up as they have not yet done so. Nearshore wrecks and reefs (30-35 FOW) have been producing Cobia, decent sized Cobia at that. Most anglers have been using artificial Eels on a chartreuse jighead. Moving out to deeper water anglers can expect a reasonable Amberjack bite 5-6 miles from shore.

Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – Sheepshead are holding up on docks taking halved Shrimp on split shot rig. Lots of keepers have been caught around Marco. Pompano are steady and varied size, they are taking live Shrimp or Pink Banana jigs. Alternatively orange colors are working particularly well in Marco. They are providing a consistent bite through to Venice. You can also find them in the passes around Sanibel taking Shrimp. Key areas to look have been in roughly 3-4 feet of water on moving tide.
Snook have been caught on Shrimp or larger artificials in Marco. In Gasparilla Sound – Charlotte Harbor, the East and West Wall, PGI and Port Charlotte Canals are also producing.
Trout are on grass flats taking Shrimp under a cork or bounced on bottom. The key is finding clean water. In Port Charlotte they are outside the bars in 3-5 ft on both the East and West wall. Trout have been caught through to Venice.
Scattered Tarpon are in the pass. You can also find them in Bull Bay reaching 120 pounds. Search the deep holes to find them.
Spanish Mackerel have been caught taking jigs in both Sanibel & Port Charlotte. Anywhere you fish in Southwest Florida, you will find a scattered Redfish bite.

OFFSHORE – There has been some Amberjack, Kings and Blackfin Tuna caught offshore this week. King Mackerel have been biting on the troll this week from Marco almost all the way to Venice. A lot of boats have had good luck pulling Bluerunners up to 20 miles out, just keep an eye out for birds and bait. Keeper Grouper have been consistent in 45 to 60 ft of water from Sanibel up to Boca Grande and again to Sarasota on cut Herring. Snapper have put on a decent show. They have been taking a variety of baits this week including Shrimp, cut Herring, Squid, Pilchards or Finger mullet. Range wise, you’ll want to start at 7 miles out 15 miles. If you’d prefer to fish in closer on account of the seas, or you like Sheepshead, well, there’s Sheepshead on a lot of the nearshore wrecks and reefs. They taste great and are usually pretty forgiving in regards to your presentation. Just drop some small Shrimp or Fiddler Crab to the bottom and they shouldn’t have a problem biting.

Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – It’s definitely a Snook’s time to shine this week. They are waking up inshore from Marco Island to Port Charlotte and they are hungry! With the Whitebait running they are on the move and in search of some live Shrimp on a hook! They seem to be just about anywhere from islands to channels to canals. It has been difficult not to run into them. Trout are also consistent into this week. They are swimming their typical Spring patterns already and are also loving live bait. The sizes have been great so far. Focus on the shallower water for the best bites!
Structure is holding a variety of species to be caught. Mangrove Snapper, Sheepshead and Jack Crevalle are mixed throughout the inshore water. The sizes are nothing great quite yet however we expect them to provide some great action for anglers in the coming weeks.
If all else fails you can always find a few Redfish inshore. This week they are preferring artificial swim baits and MirrOdines. Scattered Black Drum can be found alongside, especially in the Boca Grande and Port Charlotte area. Towards Venice a handful of Pompano and Spanish Mackerel are moving in.

OFFSHORE – Offshore fishing has proved a bit tough for anglers this week. Scattered Tripletail are beginning to show up. Live bait is your best bet to hit them. We expect the bite to heat up in the next few weeks.
The bottom bite is still consistent despite weather conditions. Mangrove Snapper and Greater Amberjack can be found on reefs along with a few Gag Grouper. The Amberjack are the most consistent catch. Everything seems to be nearshore with an extremely quiet offshore bite.

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – Marco Island and Naples have had a good showing of Pompano in the passes and channels. The grass flats have been producing Trout. Redfish have been caught around the bushes just off of deeper water.
From Naples up to Estero Bay inshore and nearshore structures are producing a decent Sheepshead bite. The Sheepshead haven’t been too picky about time of day as long as you put some bait in front of them. Up into Sanibel the Sheepshead continue to bite well on bridges and pilings. Mangrove Snapper and Sheepshead have also been caught in the passes. If you are looking to target big Snook you can head up the Caloosahatchee River. Try throwing big swimbaits or Mullet.
There is still an abundance of juvenile Tarpon in the region. The best spots are PGI canal and the Caloosahatchee River. Boca Grande Pass, Captiva Pass and surrounding beaches have been good for anyone wishing to catch Whiting or Pompano.

OFFSHORE – The artificial reefs in Southwest Florida have been fishing well for Cobia anglers. The Cobia haven’t been locked down to a specific depth, although you’ll want to start in at least 30 feet of water for some better sizes. From Sanibel to Venice, the most productive artificials seem to be anything eel like by the Hogy Lure company.
Big Gray Snapper, aka Mangrove Snapper, have been hauled off of nearshore reefs from Sanibel up to Boca Grande. Amberjack, Amberjack, Amberjack! Everyone is fired up as these prized bottom fish are being caught throughout Southwest Florida on artificial reefs and wrecks from 40-80 ft of water. The bigger boats have been finding big Ajs past 80 ft although this is mostly to the North of Port Charlotte. There has also been good Red Grouper fishing about 25 miles off of Venice. You’ll also get into some Lane Snappers and catch and release Red Snappers there too.
For anyone wanting to get out and target Permit, boats heading out of Boca Grande have been getting some decent fish in 50 ft of water.

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – It’s been a good week with a nice variety of fish. In the upper harbor around I 75 into the Peace river there are still Whiting hanging around. The bite on them isn’t bad. A lot of Snook (Snook, Common) have moved back up around the docks and mangroves. In Shell Creek between the railroad trestle and the damn there has been a lot of Snook and a few Redfish (Drum, Red). Tarpon of assorted size from 20-120 lbs have been hooked as well. Towards Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda, the Jacks are killer at the mouths of the canals. Small Snook and juvenile Tarpon are showing up. On the Punta Gorda side, the Black Drum (Drum, Black) are doing well. The Sheepshead have begun to move into the mouths of the canals with a few smaller Trout. Mangrove Snapper are moving into the mouths too. All the mouths of the canals on the Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda side are seeing a nice array of fish. The West wall is slow due to the wind from the East tearing up the shoreline. The East side is calmer so anglers are catching rat Reds with a couple bigger fish. Some are on the flats and some are under the bushes so you need to cover water. We have April fishing conditions in February so the fish don’t know where to stage and they are all over the place. We are seeing a similar bite in Bull and Turtle Bay. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted), Sharks (Shark, Bonnethead), Sheepshead and Mangroves (Snapper, Gray) are being caught here too. In the open harbor and the outside edges of the bar in front of Bull and Turtle Bay we are seeing Bluefish to 5 lbs. These are great sized Bluefish for the area. Bonnetheads and Trout are mixed in also. We are seeing a few Pompano (Pompano, Florida) that are on the edges of the bar as well, however most anglers aren’t targeting them. In Pine Island Sound the bite is the same. Fish the island and deeper cuts to find the Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Redfish (Drum, Red). Bonnetheads are scattered throughout. The sand holes in the open flats are holding Bluefish and Pompano. The occasional Blacktip and Blacknose (Shark, Blacktip & Shark, Blacknose) shark has shown up. Whiting are hot at Boca Grande and Captiva Pass. Sheepshead and Snapper are picking up in the same area. A fair number of Snook (Snook, Common) are still swimming with the warm Winter. They seem to bite in spurts. Scattered in the harbor on Alligator Creek and Cape Hayes Reef we are seeing smaller Cobia. There are a few decent sizes mixed in. They are up to 41 inches which is great for this time of year. Keep an eye out for details on the March Tent Sale at Fishin’ Frank’s Bait and Tackle! PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish listed below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – The Lane Snapper (Snapper, Lane) bite is insane from 40-50 ft of water. They are up to 3 lbs and are loving Shrimp. Mangroves (Snapper, Gray), Porgy, Sheepshead and Grunts (Grunt, White) are mixed in on hard bottoms or artificial reefs. Chum heavy over the artificial reefs, especially when there are other boats around. Cobia are on those reefs as well. A lot of anglers on Power Pole, Mary’s and Helen’s Reef are seeing fair numbers of Permit that are up to 25 lbs. Grouper (Grouper, Gag) and Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater) are still 35 miles out to find any size to them. 75-90 ft are key depths to look for. From Captiva to the Captiva Blue Hole, Pegasus and Mohawk Reefs are producing action along with just Northwest of the area towards Venice. Some of these reefs are less pressured. It’s been a great week for a nice mix of fish. There are tons of options if you are ready to be patient.

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – With the recent cold front some of the fish have begun to move from I75 to the upper Peace River but you’ll have to work your setup slow in the deeper cuts or pinch points where you have deeper, moving water. We are seeing mostly undersized or just slot sized Reds (Drum, Red). Plenty of catch and release Snook are mixed with Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Whiting (Kingfish, Southern) closer to I 75. From 41 Bridge, Punta Gorda Isle and Port Charlotte Canals we are seeing Jacks, Trout, oddball Redfish and Sheepshead around the mouths. Drum (Drum, Black) are moving around as well. Juvenile Tarpon are still being caught as well. As you work your way farther down to the East side we are seeing a more productive bite. In the morning the Trout are on the outside edge of the bar in 3-5 ft. As the day warms up the Trout are moving to the flats in 2-3 ft of water. It’s a Shrimp bite more than anything else on a jig or split shot worked on the bottom very slowly. Soft plastics are working on a jighead slowly hopped on the bottom. Redfish are scattered up and down the East side but you’ll work hard for the bite as they are all over the place. Some of the creeks are holding small sizes but not many legal sizes. Similar bites are in Turtle Bay and Bull Bay for the Trout. Redfish and Snook (Snook, Common) are scattered there as well. There are more Sheepshead scattered on the flats and fish shacks. Pompano (Pompano, Florida) have been caught as bycatches. Along the ICW from the North end of Pine Island to Lemon Bay the bushes and flats behind Boca Grande is producing better activity for Redfish, bigger Trout, Sheepshead and Mangrove (Snapper, Gray) moving into the sand holes and troughs. Around all the docks we are seeing an active bite of mixed fish with the recent cold front. Along the hospital and in the canals we are seeing a nice variety. A few Bonnetheads (Shark, Bonnethead) are swimming but they are lethargic. Blacktips and Spinners (Shark, Blacktip & Shark, Spinner) are moving up the intracoastal. You can target them but they are fairly scattered. They are better quality when you can catch them. We expect great conditions into the weekend. Keep an eye out for details on the March Tent Sale at Fishin’ Frank’s Bait and Tackle! PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish listed below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – It had been a bit rough out there earlier in the week. Anglers are fishing for Mangroves and Lanes (Snapper, Gray & Snapper, Lane) from 3-5 miles. A good number of them are up to 5 lbs. Yellowtail (Snapper, Yellowtail) are around 12 miles with fish up to 3 lbs being common. Tons of Bonito (Bontio, Little Tunny) are still swimming. There are a lot of reports towards Sanibel of mixed Bonito and Blackfin from 3-10 miles out. Grouper and Ajs are better at 35 miles in that area. Goliath (Grouper, Goliath) have moved to the nearshore and farther out reefs. There are some Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater) and Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) mixed in on the reefs that are heavy with Goliaths.

BAIT REPORT – Squirrelfish and Pinfish are on the nearshore wrecks. Small Sardines are in 30-35 ft of water. You can sabiki them since they are small and difficult to net. Plenty of Glass Minnows have been reported as well.

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – The safe bet this weekend will be staying inshore with the expected weather coming up. We are seeing a nice mix of fish inshore. On the upper end of the harbor from 41 Bridge into Peace River past I75 we are seeing a mixture of a few Whiting (Kingfish, Southern). Redfish (Drum, Red) are on the upper Peace River towards Shell creek. The numbers are consistent but the sizes are better in the upper slot limit. Snook (Snook, Common) and Tarpon are around in assorted sizes. Black Drum (Drum, Black) are mixed in from 20-50 lbs. The bigger sizes are usually in PGI however they are still in this area now. The mouths at the beginning of the harbor around Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda are holding Trout (Seatrout, Spotted), large Jacks (Jack, Crevalle) up to 10 lbs along with a few oddball Redfish. Lots of juvenile Tarpon are swimming both sides of the canal but you will have to go farther up to find them. The PGI is also holding better Tarpon and Black Drum farther up. We are also seeing mixed reports of bigger Mangrove Snapper (Snapper, Gray) and Sheepshead. While it’s been calm, the Alligator Creek reef has been hot. The Sheepshead are definitely on but you will have to move around to find them from pile to pile. Mangrove Snapper and Spadefish are bycatches. Short Cobia have been caught as well. The main bite in the harbor from North of Pirate Harbor to Burnt Store we are seeing Trout, peppered Redfish, Snook and Bonnethead (Shark, Bonnethead). Work Shrimp on a jighead lightly bouncing it along the bottom in 2-5 ft of water. Trout are in 3-5ft while Reds and Snook are shallower in 2-3 ft. Turtle and Bull Bay are doing well for the same fish. Pine Island Sound to Lemon bay are about the same, work things slow for the Trout. Redfish are in the bushes and shallower sand holes with close access to deep water. The water is cloudy with the recent wind. This is expected to remain with the upcoming system. Keep an eye out for details on the March Tent Sale at Fishin’ Frank’s Bait and Tackle! PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish listed below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – The offshore bite has been great however no one has been running offshore as the conditions are too unfavorable. Buoys were recording 8-10 ft waves and surfers are taking advantage. We hope anglers will stay safely inshore until conditions have improved. We expect more Bonito (Bonito, Little Tunny) in close. They are almost in the pass. They are up to 5 lbs however the numbers are great. Bluefish are mixed in up to 3 lbs. Glass minnows had pushed in as well. Good sizes of Mangroves, Lanes (Snapper, Gray & Snapper, Lane), Sheepshead and Porgy (Scup) are within 7-12 miles. There are still no Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) to be caught as of yet.

BAIT REPORT – Glass Minnows have been pushed into the pass with the recent weather.

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – There is a bit of activity in the Upper Peace River from I 75 up to Shell Creek and Navigator. Whiting (Kingfish, Southern) are showing up with more and more Redfish (Drum, Red) cruising around. Peanut Snook (Snook, Common) are being reported for catch and release anglers. Juvenile Tarpon are around with a few nice sized fish to 80 lbs. Some anglers fishing the farther back creeks are finding Tilapia. The Pina Gorda Isle Canals are holding Black Drum (Drum, Black) and juvenile Tarpon. Mangroves and Sheepshead are picking up in the Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda Canals. They are up to 18 inches. They are chewing well on Shrimp with the recent full moon. The bigger Mangroves (Snapper, Gray) are taking frozen whitebait. Freeline with a small split shot and drift it down as naturally as possible. The East side of the harbor is one of the most active areas. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are caught in up to 5 ft of water. The quality of Trout has increased with the temperature change. The Redfish are about the same. You can find them in the sand holes or around the edges of the mangrove shoreline closer to the deep water. They are loving Shrimp this week. Palm sized shrimp to 4 inches are best. Sheepshead are picking up in Alligator Creek Reef, the Cape Hayes Reef along with the East and West side. Spanish Mackerel (Mackerel, Spanish) are slow up and down the coast. Normally they are great in the harbor and around the Skyway bridge. Bluefish are on fire in terms of size. They are up to 5 lbs. Pine Island is doing great for bigger Trout in 3-5 ft of water near deeper sand holes and troughs. Around Yooseppa towards Captiva Rocks we are seeing fish up to 24 inches. Drag a Shrimp in slow on a jighead. Pinfish are working as well. Good Blacktip (Shark, Blacktip) have been caught. There may even be some Spinners (Shark, Spinner) around. They are nicer fish to 5 ft. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish listed below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – The Boca Grande Pass is holding Bonito (Bonito, Little Tunny) to 5 lbs inside the pass. They are a fun catch. Bonito are schooled out to 18 miles. You can see them hitting the surface, there aren’t that many birds on them. A few Blackfin (Tuna, Blackfin) are mixed in. From 3-18 miles the Snapper (Snapper, Gray & Snapper, Lane), Grunt (Grunt, White) and a few Sheepshead are hitting well. Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater) and Grouper (Grouper, Red & Grouper, Gag) are 30 miles out or better. Gags are providing a good bite inside 15 miles for catch and release anglers. A few more Cobia and Permit have been caught closer in on the reefs. Tripletail are scattered from Captiva to Venice on the crab buoys. There aren’t a lot of them but they are from 6-10 lbs so far.

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – The upper harbor is off and on this week. The middle to lower harbor is holding Redfish (Drum, Red), Trout (Seatrout, Spotted), catch and release Snook (Snook, Common) and Bonnetheads (Shark, Bonnethead) on the East and West walls. Juvenile Tarpon and Drum (Drum, Black) are in the Punta Gorda Island and the canals. There are some in the Port Charlotte Canals. This weekend’s cold snap should improve the bite. It will bring fish up to this area where they should be this time of year. The Redfish are getting smaller and smaller so finding legal sizes is tricky. There are a lot of Rat Reds being caught. With the high salinity and water temperature, the Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) are surprisingly still in the passes and off the beaches. They haven’t moved into the harbor. This may have been due to the Red Tide that was in the area. Sheepshead are doing well along the intracoastal in Turtle Bay, Bull Bay, the backside of Boca Grande and into Lemon Bay.

OFFSHORE – The weather has been nice so most anglers were running offshore this week. From the passes out to 15 miles we are seeing Snapper (Snapper, Gray), Grunts and Porgy. Spanish, small Kings (Mackerel, Spanish & Mackerel, King) and even a few Cobia and Tripletail are biting around the crab traps and bait balls. From 25-30 miles we are seeing Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater) and Grouper (Grouper, Red). Bigger Blacktip and Spinner Sharks (Shark, Blacktip & Shark, Spinner) have been reported to 6 ft from 15 miles out. Bonito (Bonito, Little Tunny) are schooling from 25ft deep and out to 35 miles out. Blackfin (Tuna, Blackfin) are underneath of them.

BAIT REPORT – There’s lots of fry in the harbor but not a lot of other bait has been found.

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – For Fort Myers, Pine Island, Boca Grande and Port Charlotte – Things are picking up from I75 to Shell Creek Dam. The Dam area is good for catch and release snook, some legal Redfish (Drum, Red) and a handful of Tarpon up to 100 lbs. Black Drum (Drum, Black) and baby Redfish are around the I75 Bridge. A few reports of Whiting (Kingfish, Southern) have moved in too. PGI Canal fishing is hot around the mouths with the warm weather. Big Jacks (Jack, Crevalle) to 15 lbs are turning up with legal Redfish. Eating sized Black Drum to 40 lbs have also been caught. Mangroves (Snapper, Gray) are spotty in the Canal with Sheepshead. Moving down the East and West Wall they are hot and cold from day to day. Redfish are under the bushes and around the mouths of the creeks and even on the flats. They are up to 24 inches. In the creeks we are seeing tons of small sizes. Peanut Snook (Snook, Common) are everywhere. Pompano (Pompano, Florida) are scattered on the East and West side on the bar and the outer edge of the bar. Bonnetheads (Shark, Bonnethead) are swimming the flats and the center hole. Quite a few straggler Tarpon are still scattered in the holes, pass and just off the reefs. The upcoming front shouldn’t change much this week. It may slow things down a bit for a day or two. It should be close to normal for the new year. The beaches are seeing good Sheepshead around the passes. Nice sized Whiting have been caught too. Flounder (Flounder, Southern) seem to come in waves. You can find Bull Reds at night around the passes. Blacktips and Bull Sharks (Shark, Blacktip & Shark, Bull) have moved through at night. They are up to 5 ft. A few oddball Pompano and Jacks (Jack, Crevalle) are moving as well. Spanish seem to have disappeared. They are out in the center of the passes about a half mile out and farther. Trout activity has been slow in general. Most are small and peppered all over. Around Ft. Myers the fish are towards Matlacha, Pine Island and Sanibel this week. There hasn’t been much locally out of Fort Myers. Normally the 41 Bridge to I75 around the Power Plant in Caloosahatchee we see Snook (Snook, Common), Tarpon and Redfish (Drum, Red) will stack around it with the warm water discharge. With the warm weather they are still on the outside.

OFFSHORE – The weather has been beautiful this week. We are seeing fantastic skies and calm waters. Plenty of anglers headed offshore to take advantage. The Blackfin (Tuna, Blackfin) are on fire in 35-40 ft of water. Slow troll around the outside edge of the reef using spoons and small lipped plugs. Birds and bait are key on the surface. Look for Bonito (Bonito, Little Tunny) and cast jigs to hook them as well. Kings (Mackerel, King), Cobia and Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) are doing well about 20-35 miles out. They are smaller in close and a bit more scattered. Grunts (Grunt, White), Porgy (Jolthead) and Snapper (Snapper, Lane & Snapper, Mangrove) are hot from 10-18 miles. Gags (Grouper, Gag) are closing Sunday so anglers are taking advantage in 70-90 ft. They are mixed with Red Grouper (Grouper, Red).

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – Despite the upcoming cold snap, the temperatures are expected to warm back up. We will see the heaviest impact on the Mullet run. The Red Tide is still affecting the area. It is in patches throughout the Harbor, Panagoda Isle Canal, 41 and I 75 and a few patches by the Mayaka. If you are willing to move around you will find some fish. Bloated dead fish aren’t necessarily an indicator of red tide, they could have blown in from elsewhere. There’s a good chance there will be some fish under them that are very much alive and willing to take bait. The East and West side are doing well for Redfish (Drum, Red), Snook (Snook, Common) and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted), you just have to be prepared to move a lot. There has been some Red Tide by St. James City in Pine Island as well. A few patches are also around the Intracoastal and towards Venice. An East wind and a bit of rain will move some of the Red Tide out. Out of Boca Pass the Sheepshead are starting to move in. Spanish and Kings (Mackerel, Spanish & Mackerel, King) are moving in and out of the Channel. Mangrove Snapper (Snapper, Gray) are already there. An East wind and a bit of rain will move some of the Red Tide out. Stop in and check out the great products in Fishin’ Franks Bait & Tackle just in time for the holiday season! PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish listed below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – The bite is incredible in 60-80 ft of water for Red Grouper, Gag Grouper (Grouper, Gag & Grouper, Red), King Mackerel (Mackerel, King) and Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish). Grunts (Grunt, White), Mangroves and Lanes (Snapper, Lane & Snapper, Gray) can also be caught. A few sporadic Blackfin (Tuna, Blackfin) are here and there for anglers flatlining and chumming. We expect some bumpy water for the weekend with the upcoming front.

BAIT REPORT – Despite the upcoming cold snap the temperatures are expected to warm back up for the weekend. We will see the heaviest impact on the Mullet run. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below for additional tips and tricks!

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Redfish (Drum, Red) bite is very active. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are doing well too on Shrimp. Outgoing tide has produced a better bite. Grass flats are very productive. The fish are sitting shallow and we a negative tides right now. Big Snook (Snook, Common) have turned up but it has been difficult to get them to eat. Mid day fish are in deeper holes as the sun comes up. They are getting pretty spooky as you drift over them. Most of the anglers are fishing Bull Bay and Gasparilla Sound.

OFFSHORE – The Tripletail are moving in and with that the Cobia are expected soon too. Kings (Mackerel, King) are biting. Red Tide has been pushed back inside but should be too bad once you get offshore a bit.

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – Around Pine Island we are seeing a few patches of Red Tide. Matlacha has had a heavier bloom. Pine Island sound from Boca down is fishing well. The Redfish (Drum, Red), Snook and Trout have been unbelievable around Rat Key, Cat Key and Captiva Rocks. On the inside of Captiva Pass there are some good Pompano (Pompano, Florida) on the North end and the South side of the channel. Big Whiting (Kingfish, Southern) are at the edge of the pass. A few Gags (Grouper, Gag) have been caught as well with a few being legal sizes. Spanish are moving in and out of the whole intracoastal. The fishing is a mirror image at Boca Grande although we are seeing a few more Sheepshead in the channel along with some Kings (Mackerel, King) a few hundred yards outside the pass and the channel. Troll a 15 or 16 series Bomber about 6 feet down to hit them. The cold snap brought them down. Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) are making it inside the harbor. With the bait kill, the Kings aren’t following the bait in. In Turtle Bay and the West wall we are seeing a good bite. Redfish and Snook are along the bushes. On the West wall there is Trout, Pompano as well as Bonnethead Sharks, Turtle bay is similar. Reds and Snook (Snook, Common) are along the bushes with tons of Trout scattered on the deep flats with the occasional Redfish. A good amount of Pompano are swimming the Cape Hayes Bar with Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Spanish. A few Flounder have turned up incidentally. They are moving in as the temperature drops. Cobia are showing up inside the harbor and most are on the smaller size, but some are up to 38 inches. They are being caught while anglers are trolling for Spanish or anchored on the reef. Canals in Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda are beginning to light up. The water is super clear. Snook are moving in, mostly small. Slow troll the canal for them. Black Drum (Drum, Black) are hot in the PGI canals. They are big. The smaller sizes are in the Port Charlotte Canal up to 10 lbs. There hasn’t been much on juvenile Tarpon this week. Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – There was a little patch of Red Tide moving inside Pirate Harbor down to Two Pines. It seems to have moved out now and luckily it wasn’t a super strong bloom. All the flats were holding dead baitfish, Trout (Seatrout, Spotted), Tarpon, Snook (Snook, Common) and Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish). It was in and out pretty quickly. The wind and high Supermoon Tides cleared it out. The West wall has been good for some amazing Redfish and Snook. Most Snook are undersized. Scattered Reds are along the bushes. On the flats, schools of Redfish are following Mullet pods. In Turtle Bay and Bull Bay we are seeing Redfish, Trout and Snook scattered about. Along the ICW to the North End of Pine Island we are seeing Spanish right at the top. Kings (Mackerel, King) and Gags (Grouper, Gag) were caught trolling on the way out. The canals will begin to cool off with the upcoming cold front. Snapper (Snapper, Gray) are moving in with the Snook. They are slow at this point. Juvenile Tarpon are around as per usual. Drum (Drum, Black) have thinned out in Punta Gorda Isles but the ones that are still there are around 40 lbs. Check out Fishin’ Frank’s Bait and Tackle at the Fort Myers Boat Show! Anglers going farther North towards the Mohawk, Pegasis and Captiva Blue Hole about 25-30 miles West/Northwest we are seeing 30-34 inch Red Grouper (Grouper, Red), Kings (Mackerel, King) and a few Blackfin (Tuna, Blackfin). African Pomps (Pompano, African) have also been caught with tons of Bonito. Cudas (Barracuda, Great) have invaded the area as they leave the nearshore wrecks for the 90 ft mark. Kings are right up to Venice along the beaches with a few Cobia. There have been a couple oddball Tripletail but they aren’t where they should be at this time. Search the Crab Trap markers for them.

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – Redfish (Drum, Red) are on fire! They are great sizes as well. The smaller fish have been 23 inches. They are right around the intracoastal and the North end of Pine Island around the shoals. Heading North to Bull Bay we are seeing Redfish scattered here as well. They are schooled up from Widden Bay to Turtle Bay both inside and outside. Peppered Snook (Snook, Common) of various sizes are mixed in as they move to the backcountry. As you move to the harbor you see the East and West side getting more fish moving farther North. The East side is a bit more consistent. The West is getting better along the whole wall. Pinfish and Shrimp are your two best bets however Threadfins and small Whitebait moved in from offshore to the harbor. You can throw this as well for the smaller Snook. Around Widden Bay and Sand Fly there is some Red Tide. It’s weak but it could kill your bait. Pompano (Pompano, Florida) are cruising the beaches from Englewood to Boca Grande Pass. Pompano are moving inside the harbor however most of it is in Cape Hayes, Burnt Store Bar and the East Wall. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are small and everywhere. Bigger sizes are scattered from Pine Island to Lemon bay. They have been caught on the drift. Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) are coming inside as they follow the bait through the center of the harbor. Look from Cape Hayes to Marker 6 around Burnt Store. The lower center harbor is best. Small Kings (Mackerel, King) are mixed in. Juvenile Tarpon are still in the canals. The water is extremely clear. Snook are biting at night as they move into the canals with the Tarpon and Black Drum (Drum, Black). There are a few reports of incidental Cobia catches that are just undersized this week. A few keepers are mixed in however not many. The water is still fairly warm into this week. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish listed below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Redfish have been going off really well along with the Snook (Snook, Common). Most of the better activity is on the East side, Bull Bay and Turtle Bay as well. The West wall is picking up a bit more as we haven’t had rain and the rivers are beginning to slow down significantly. The fish are on the move and changing their feeding pattern. They are switching to Pinfish and Shrimp. Both baits are very productive. A few mixed reports of Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are turning up but most of them are small. The bigger sizes are in the Pine Island area. Towards the intracoastal and the back side of Boca into Lemon bay the Snook and Redfish are still dominating. Around the islands and cuts where there is faster moving water there is a nice mix of Reds (Drum, Red) and Snook. The water temperature has dropped which has fired up the fish. Pompano (Pompano, Florida) are down by Placida, on the beach and towards Stump Pass. Anglers are skipping them when they are running the bars. Juvenile Tarpon are swimming the PGI Canal and have moved in from the bridges. Everything else is fairly scattered. No one is heading offshore yet. The New Store is open! Check it out in Fort Myers! Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – Inside is pretty easy this week. The Snook (Snook, Common) bite is incredible from the passes to just inside the intracoastal. A lot of the fish that ran from the Red Tide and only made their way in a bit are staging into their Winter patterns. Fish are coming and going in Bull Bay, Turtle Bay and the lower portion of the West Wall. They are holding tons of fish but they are moving in and out. There has been Snook up to 42 inches, you just have to hit the right time. Live Pinfish are the key for Snook (Snook, Common) this week. Pine Island Sound and Lemon bay are similar. The new Rapala Single Hook Mullet on a flat retrieve has been productive for the Snook here and there. The fish know Winter is coming so they are turning onto the Pinfish feed. Redfish (Drum, Red) and Snook are a bit funky somedays coming off the full moon. Recently it was a bit slow however the past week on the East side from Two Pines to Alligator Creek has been holding scattered Snook and Redfish along the bushes and flats. Most are loose fish and not totally schooled up. Anglers are using Shrimp and Pinfish. Blue Crab are key for the Reds, especially cut up. MirrOlure Lil Johns in Watermelon Red Flake is a great artificial to throw. Tarpon are good but they are mostly juveniles. The 41 bridge in the morning at first light has been killer until about 10 am and after 10 pm. They are from 20-60 lbs. There are a bit more Sharks (Shark, Bonnethead) on the flats. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are picking up but most are still small. We are waiting for about 75 degree water temperatures before they group up and the bite becomes consistent. There is still quite a bit of fresh water pouring out of the Peace River. Each day it’s getting a bit better. The wind has been strong out of the North East and creating some good wave activity while effectively clearing up the water a bit. The New Store is open! Check it out in Fort Myers! Stay tuned for the new PENN Slammer and DIAWA BG Series that should arrive in store soon! PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish listed below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – It’s been so windy that most anglers are staying inside. Spanish and Kings (Mackerel, Spanish & Mackerel, King) are biting a bit closer in. The Kings are sporadic at best. Dolphin are swimming about 12 miles out. The bottom fishing has been slow. The upcoming cold front should change the activity for the better.

BAIT REPORT – The Easterly wind has pushed a lot of bait closer to shore. Pinfish can be found along the intracoastal, not into the upper harbor but are in the lower end. Sabiki them up for bigger sizes or chum the flats for good numbers but smaller sizes. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below for additional tips and tricks!

If you are searching for Snook, head out just after sunset. Towards the cutoff the Snook and Redfish are decent. The Reds are schooled up. Shrimp will work well to hook them along with small spoons. Cattle Dock and the locks entrances have a school which is at one or the other places. The Tarpon in the river is on and the Ladyfish have also shown up here. This is also the key to hook up the Tarpon. New gear is coming soon! Stay tuned for lots of great products! INSHORE – Inside the harbor going into Gasparilla Sound up and around the Charlotte Harbor has been the most productive for the past week as Red Tide is beginning to infiltrate Lemon Bay and Stump Pass. There are a lot of distressed fish in the local area. Blacktip Sharks, Sandbar Sharks (Shark, Blacktip & Shark, Sandbar) and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are swimming along with Snook (Snook, Common) and a few Redfish (Drum, Red). Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

We expect the Snook (Snook, Common) to turn on at the bridges and stillways after the storm passes and the water pushes them in. They will be hungry as well. The bite should be great. The storm should perk up the Redfish (Drum, Red) and Flounder (Flounder, Southern) on the beaches as well when the storm cools the water down. New gear is coming soon! Stay tuned for lots of great products! PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish listed below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – The fishing has been good this week. The full moon has mixed things up a bit. The Redfish (Drum, Red) are good on the East side and down along the intracoastal on Shrimp, Blue Crab and cut bait. There has been some Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) however they are acting odd this week. There are schools in 4-7 ft of water and mostly down on the Southern end of the harbor. Some groups are up to 14 inches and some are up to 22 inches. It’s just a matter of finding them. Some are on the outside of the bar sitting close to the bottom in drop offs. They are up 23 inches in these areas. The biggest focus is all the Drum (Drum, Black) and Tarpon in the PGI and Port Charlotte Canals in great numbers. They are a lot of fun to catch and the center of the harbor has small Sharks (Shark, Bull & Shark, Blacktip & Shark, Lemon). Pirate Harbor Hole out to the intracoastal has nice Lemon Sharks. They are dominating the bottom end of the harbor up to 9 ft long. The Snook (Snook, Common) have spawned on the last full moon so they are moving a lot. The passes are holding big fish. The smaller fish are on the inside of the intracoastal, especially in Pine Island and Bull bay. The quantity is good here. They are about 12-29 inches. There hasn’t been much on Tarpon on the inside. There aren’t any good concentrations as there are no Glass Minnows or Ladyfish in the harbor. They should come back in soon. They are swimming the middle of the harbor in all the deeper holes and around Alligator Creek Reef. They are peppered all over. In Lemon bay there is a ton of Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Redfish. Trout are also on the East side in assorted sizes. Use plastics while jigging on the bottom to find them. In the Port Charlotte Canal we are seeing huge Drum (Drum, Black) up to 60 lbs move in. Tarpon are all over the 20 ft holes in the harbor. There are some Lanes (Snapper, Lane) mixed in as well. There have not been any reports of Permit this week. Barracudas (Barracuda, Great) are all over the artificial reefs from 7-50 miles out.

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – The weather has made the fishing very difficult this week. The wind and rain has kept anglers off the water for the most part. We have had no reports from this area so far but we hope to see conditions clear up soon. When that happens we expect to see a lot of pretty good activity. Redfish (Drum, Red) should really start to increase along with the Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) as the bait fish get pushed out of the river. Small Sharks (Shark, Blacktip & Shark, Bull), Tarpon and Snook (Snook, Common) may move in for a feeding frenzy. The wind may bring in a lot of bait fish as well so the nearshore will heat up with Bonito (Bonito, Little Tunny) in close within 3 miles. It may take a few days before the system calms down and the bite heats up.

OFFSHORE – Once weather clears up we expect to see some hot bottom activity from the Grouper (Grouper, Gag). The weather can change just about everything so be prepared for a nice variety.

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – This week we are seeing lots and lots of fun sized Sharks spread all over the harbour. There are Redfish on the west wall and in Pine Island sound. The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) activity has been kind of spotty but overall good this week. Inside there’s also a whole load of Tarpon on the beaches in the passes and in the harbor. The nice thing about this is now you have options for the Tarpon as opposed to just being limited to Boca Grande Pass.

OFFSHORE – From 3-20 miles there are good spreads of Spanish Mackerel (Mackerel, Spanish). There are also a few Bonita (Bonito, Little Tunny), Cobia, and Kings (Mackerel, King) in this area. From 5-15 miles offshore near the wrecks, there has been Permit. Bottom-fish wise, the big Mangs (Snapper, Gray) are from 15-20 miles now that Gag grouper (Grouper, Gag) are open. You’ll see the Grouper’s being caught from the near shore passes. We headed 42 miles the other day and stumbled upon quite a few Gags.

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – Redfish (Drum, Red) are showing up everywhere and can be found in the Matlacha area and on the east side back at least about 2 sets of islands. There are also some fish up around the cut off but Redfish see to be scattered around this area at the moment. Snook have been incredible this year primarily due to perfectly timed rains. As a result, Snook can be found near the Barrier Islands, turtle bay, pine island sound, gasborillo sound, and the backside of the islands. The east side of the Harbour has an excellent population of Snook. Cobias are still hanging in there, you can primarily catch them with drifting outside of the sandbar about a half mile north of Pirate Harbour around 6 ft. of water but some are being caught in deeper water. Large triple tail is in the harbour and the gulf that easily surpass 20 inches. Tarpon have mostly been concentrated around the passes: Boca Grande, Captiva, Gasparilla, and Stump Pass. The Tarpon seem to be looking in the passes on the big outgoing tide where there is a big flush of crabs, making evening and night fishing most effective. Near the passes, there are monster sharks, manatees, porpoises, and Tarpon – and you can see them. The primary sharks that can be found along the east side of the sandbar further down towards burnt store, you have a great concentration of Bonnets (Shark, Bonnethead) and as you head off into the deeper water, you get Sharpnose (Shark, Atlantic Sharpnose) and Black Tips (Shark, Black Tip) that are mostly smaller in size. Once you are hitting Cape Haze, and that whole straits area out of Boca Grande Pass, you are looking at hitting 10-12 ft. sharks such as Bullsharks (Shark, Bull) and Hammerheads (Shark, H.H. – Great) in large quantities. The secret Tarpon weapon of choice as soon as the fish leave the passes is the the big Rapala Sub-Walk, the big Xrsb 15’s. They work best when you take the back hook off.

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – Snook (Snook, Common) are closed but there are a lot of fish being caught along the passes and in the areas or docks stacked up on the pass. The shorelines are also holding Snook. Pompano (Pompano, Florida) are also in the same areas with some small Permit mixed in. Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) and Kings (Mackerel, King) are still making their way through. Travelling Cobia have been caught in great numbers lately too. In the bay, Mangrove Snapper (Snapper, Gray) are hitting around the local piers. The bays, especially Lemon Bay, has tons of Redfish (Drum, Red) in various sizes. There is a good mixture. The big focus is Tarpon fishing in the backwater this week. They are still moving from Pine Island into the Charlotte area. They can also be caught in the passes and on the beach. We expect these conditions to carry into the weekend.

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – Another run of beautiful weather will greet anglers over the coming week and that should only help to carry over from the week before. Fishing has been very good with access to just about any species anglers might be after. Bait schools are getting larger and more abundant and the new moon tide will push them toward the beaches. Capt. Greg Stamper of Snook Stamp Charters said that a few beautiful days this past week gave all kinds of fishing options. The Thursday and Friday morning tides were rather slow and that made things a bit tough, however the afternoon tides got things going. Redfishing was gradually getting better as we found active fish from Sanibel all the way up to the northern end of the Sound. Snook have definitely gotten hungry and when you have pilchards you’ll definitely catch a few. Most snook were caught while targeting docks and the edges of flats during good moving water. Seatrout seem happy right now with fish up to 25 inches being caught. They were hitting artificial shrimp rigged weedless, both along shorelines with slightly deeper edges and on the grass flats in 3 to 5 feet of water. The passes continue to hold all kinds of action, including some nice pompano. Capt. Kevin Bellington of Sea Gone Charters fished the backwaters around Caxambas Pass with Murray Goldman and his brother-in-law Allen. Severe weather was on schedule for the day they were fishing so the group kept an eye on the sky. They fished a strong incoming tide and did very well fishing in front of the approaching cold front. Using 1/4 ounce weights they were able to get live shrimp to the bottom and then let the current move the offerings into the ambush areas. A nice mix of fish included 4 sheepshead, 1 keeper sized mangrove snapper and a couple of 20 plus inch seatrout. They also kept the rods bent with a few big jacks. Capt. Jon Fetter of Catching The Cure Charters said that fishing was a bit tough in the back bays over the past week. Tides weren’t the best but that should improve this week. A good seatrout bite on the grass flats, in 3-5 feet of water, was a plus. Shrimp under popping corks worked best. Redfish were being caught around the oyster bars while using cut ladyfish for bait. Working the high water produced some quality fish. There are a still a few sheepshead hanging around the oyster areas and mangrove islands. A shrimp tipped jig head will get their attention. Tarpon are biting in the Sanibel and Captiva Island areas. Drift through the schools with free lined threadfin herrings or pass crabs. Capt. Larry Hendricks of Tall Tails Charters said that just about everything that swims is biting right now. Tarpon, cobia, sharks, seatrout, redfish, snook and spanish mackerel are at the top of the list, along with jacks, ladyfish and tripletail. Bait on the flats continues to be hard to get on a consistent basis. Timing is everything and don’t leave home without a lot of chum. The magical bait getting time seems to be between 6:15 and 7:00AM. After that you can still get pinfish and threads but the pilchards seem to scatter. Shrimp has become a staple and the fish don’t seem to mind a bit. It fooled several nice reds, a snook and a tripletail this past week. Tarpon are seemingly everywhere and nowhere all at the same time. Schools move from day to day and anglers need to be willing to put in the time. Crabs and threadfin herrings suspended under a float and drifted with the tide works well. Offshore reefs are giving up some dandy mangrove snapper along with king mackerel. Catch and release gag grouper have also been the norm. Capt. Brad Brown of Moonlite Charters noted that the white butterflies have shown up along the beaches and that means it’s tarpon time! It’s also time to get out there on the water and chase silver kings. Capt. Brad said the best bet was drifting with live threadfin herrings on a large circle hook of choice. Most anglers go with 5/0 to 7/0. If the winds are up in the Gulf be sure to hit the back waters. Estero Bay has poons in the early morning near Weeks Fish Camp and the inside of Pine Island Sound is also good near Redfish Pass. Capt. Sam Acure of Team Arcure Fishing has been targeting redfish this past week. The go-to setup was a 1/4 ounce jig head with a large or jumbo hand picked shrimp. The key is to keep the bait as close to the mangrove islands or oyster bars for as long as possible. If there is a lot of grass float the bait over that area to avoid the pesky pinfish. Sometimes it helps to work mangrove shorelines by casting the baits with floats, popping them a few times and then waiting for a strike. Don’t be disappointed if mangrove snapper are biting. They are a good indicator that redfish are around. The best mangrove shorelines are the ones that have deep water and some oyster mounds. Fish in this Report: (Drum, Red) (Snook, Common) (Seatrout, Spotted) (Sheepshead) (Snapper, Gray) (Jack, Crevalle) (Tarpon) (Cobia) (Mackerel, Spanish) (Ladyfish) (Tripletail) (Mackerel, King)

BAIT REPORT – Popular baits this week are Shrimp, Threadfins, Pinfish, Pilchards and Crabs

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – Unusually warm weather has moved in with afternoon temperatures to 90 degrees. That’s pushed the Gulf waters up to 80 degrees and has started a major migration of bait from the South to North. The Tarpon have responded as evidenced by catches along the coast from Naples up to Boca Grande. Live Threadfin Herring have been the bait of choice but don’t overlook cut baits on the bottom, especially in nearshore waters along the beaches. Spring tides are fast approaching and that will make inshore fishing very interesting. It’s one of the best times to get that trophy Snook (Snook, Common) so get out there and get busy Capt. Greg Stamper of Snook Stamp Charters said that another week of stalking Tarpon was slowed down a bit with winds along the nearshore beaches. Deciding if you wanted to go big or go with numbers was more of the decision. Clients that wanted numbers and action were not disappointed as Seatrout (Seatrout, Spotted), Pompano (Pompano, Forida) and a bunch of other fish were plentiful all week. Tarpon are certainly in the mix off Sanibel and the intracoastal waters of Pine Island Sound, as long as you’re willing to sit and wait. Snook fishing continues to be good in both the backcountry and river mouths. Whitebait or Threadfins free lined on a 30 pound fluorocarbon leader with a 2/0 or 3/0 circle hook will get the job done. Redfishing (Drum, Red) is getting better, but not great yet. Most Redfish have been caught on cut baits like Crabs or Lady fish left alone near mangroves shorelines Capt. Larry Hendricks of Tall Tails Charters noted lots and lots of slot sized Seatrout were willing to take just about any bait suspended under a popping cork this past week. Redfish are biting pretty well at or near the top of the afternoon tide on both Shrimp and Pilchards that were also suspended under corks. Tarpon can be found in the traditional holes in Pine Island Sound. Get there early. It’s been crowded due to the wind keeping anglers off the Gulf and moving them inside the Sound. Bait of choice was a free lined pinfish. From lines in to hook up and release it’s taking about 30 minutes. More Tarpon fishing this week Capt. Jon Fetter of Catching The Cure Charters said the back bay fishing continued to be tough for anglers. The best Redfish opportunities are still on higher water around oyster bars and mangrove islands using cut baits, like Ladyfish or Crabs. Live bait is still a challenge to net, but no worries as shrimp on jig heads or under floats will also work. Snook fishing was really tough due to the lack of live bait around the beaches and back bays. Anglers looking for line siders can try artificials like Zoom Flukes or Gulp Jerk Shads around the floating docks and dock lights at night. There has been a decent Seatrout bite with most around 14 inches in length. Working Shrimp under popping corks in 3 to 5 feet of water over grass flats is the best way to locate and catch these great tasting fish. Most anglers are chasing tarpon along the beaches of Northern Sanibel and Captiva islands. Free-lining threadfin herrings or floating crabs is the ticket to getting one of these fish of a lifetime.

OFFSHORE – Capt. Alex Dolinski of Spot On Charters fished with Capt. Larry Kurlander of Bonita Springs, FL. They trolled in 80 feet of water in the Gulf off of Sanibel Island using Ballyhoo. They landed and released 3 Amberjack (Jack, Amberjack Greater) to 40 pounds and a 25 pound King Mackerel (Mackerel, King).

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – The early part of the coming week will be a bit tough with some weak tides following the new moon, but that should pull together by Sunday and make for a real good upcoming week. The waters are warming up nicely and the rains have held off and that means the bait is moving back to the beaches and into the backcountry waters. Good reports of Tarpon are coming in all at once. Seems they are back right on time with the best reports off of Captiva Island. Capt. Greg Stamper of Snook Stamp Charters fished the backcountry to avoid the past week’s winds and chased Snook (Snook, Common), Redfish (Drum, Red), Seatrout (Seatrout, Spotted) and whatever would bite. However, he did get a chance to play in some deeper water a couple of times and picked up a bunch of Tripletail, some Permit and an assortment of reef species like Snapper, Grouper and some big Seatrout. Most of the backcountry bite was on live baits such as Pinfish, Pilchards and of course Shrimp. His anglers mostly fished around mangrove shorelines that offered wind block and somewhat cleaner water. Capt. Greg didn’t target Tarpon this week but did see some in the typical areas through Pine Island Sound and along the beaches of Sanibel and Captiva. Tarpon should be in full swing as we get closer to the full moon. Capt. Brad Brown of Moonlite Charters said that the weather was great this past week and it was nice to see clean and green water back in Estero Bay. Live bait has been available for those willing to hunt for it and the fish are loving it. Lots of small to medium Snook but no keepers this past week but his anglers were able to put some nice Redfish in the box. Some Seatrout and a few big Jacks (Jack, Crevalle) were around as well. Capt. Brad also noted that the boating traffic on the Bay has started to quiet down a bit so now is a great time to get out there and get back to some of your favorite fishing areas. Capt. Jon Fetter of Catching The Cure Charters said the fishing was a bit slow on the windy days in Estero Bay. However, the spotted seatrout bite has been decent along the grass flats in 3 to 5 feet of water. Deeper channels are also producing. Shrimp under popping corks was the best setup for the shallower water, while bouncing shrimp tipped jig heads worked in the deep. The passes are providing anglers with options including Seatrout, Snapper (Snapper, Gray & Snapper, Mutton), Whiting (Kingfish, Southern), Spanish Mackerel (Mackerel, Spanish), Ladyfish and small Sharks (Shark, Blacktip & Shark, Bonnethead). Shrimp on a 1/8 ounce jig worked best. The Redfish bite was a little tough, but persistent anglers can pick some up using cut bait around the oyster bars and mangrove islands on higher water. Fishing the stronger tides seemed to also help. Live bait is starting to show up which means the Snook will be feeding like crazy. Free line them on 3/0 circle hooks near floating docks and along mangrove edges near the passes. Capt. Sam Arcure of Team Arcure Fishing worked Pine Island Sound this past week and found a steady Seatrout bite while using live Shrimp under a float with a 1/4 ounce jig head. The trick was using medium to large Shrimp hooked through the head to keep them alive. Each cast should be made so that the float actually moves with the current and popping the float about three times helps to attract the fish. Redfish have also been caught using the same method but adjust the leader below the float to about 12 inches in length. The bite has been mostly around mangrove islands with oyster bars on the incoming tide. A chartreuse jig head works the best, but red colored ones are good too. Small Sharks have started to frequent the flats with bonnethead and blacktips being the most active feeders. Baitfish are showing up on the grass flats in the southern section of the Sound near Chino Island and outside of Tarpon Bay. Threadfins are being netted along the Sanibel Causeway. Capt. Alex Dolinski of Spot On Charters fished with Paul from Wisconsin along Rocky Bay in upper Estero Bay. They landed sheepshead, some nice Seatrout to 22 inches and a couple of slot Redfish. A combination of cut Crab and live Shrimp were used for bait. The Redfish went after cut Ladyfish on a 3/0 circle hook. Best bite was on the higher part of the tide. Capt. Larry Hendricks of Tall Tail Charters noted that he had a great seatrout bite on this past Wednesday. He estimated 50 plus fish with 75% of them in the slot or above. His anglers were also averaging 4 reds a morning and a few Snook. Whitebait, small pins and shrimp were all effective under corks. Capt. Larry also said he saw a few rolling tarpon in the mornings but hasn’t started targeting them as yet. In the offshore waters king mackerel are biting trolled short lipped plugs. Snapper have been somewhat reliable when the winds allow access to the Gulf.

OFFSHORE – On a recent offshore trip with Ken Matheis, Capt. Alex trolled dredged Ballyhoo along the offshore ledges and produced 15 King Mackerel (Mackerel, King) up to 30 pounds and 6 Amberjack (Jack, Amberjack Greater) to 60 pounds. Best speed for trolling was 4 to 6 mph. The best bites came when pulling the baits close to the stern on choppy days and further back on calmer days.

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – There is quite a bit of activity throughout Lemon bay and the harbor. Snook, Trout (Seatrout, Spotted), and Redfish (Drum, Red) are on the flats. Ladyfish are swimming the area as well. Tarpon are making their way around the Charlotte Harbor as well, where it drops off. There were some found on the flats that were caught on Topwaters. There are also some Mackerel (Mackerel, Spanish) coming in as well as Pompano (Pompano, Florida) that are moving towards the beach and the inside. When the wind isn’t too bad anglers are heading to Pine Island to look for Trout and search for baitfish. Redfish and Snook (Snook, Common) have also been found in this area.

OFFSHORE – Big Snapper (Snapper, Gray) are being caught this week. There are also Permit being caught around some of the closer wrecks around 2 miles and 5 miles. Anglers are casting crabs to hook them. Cobia and Kings (Mackerel, King) are moving up as well. They come as close as the Boca Grande Pass during the incoming tide as they follow the bait. Anglers can troll for them at that point.

BAIT REPORT – The Ship channel is holding Blue Runners, Threadfins, Sardines and Cigar Minnows. Pilchards and small Threadfins can also been cast netted this week. The bait is picking up. Fisherman’s Edge Tackle has some great live bait, so stop in and stock up!

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – The reports have been MUCH better throughout Southwest Florida. Best stuff has been coming from the backcountry along the east wall of Estero Bay. Some big Redfish (Drum, Red) have moved in. Captains are reporting quite a few over slot in the 30 inch range mixed in with good numbers of slot fish. Bait of choice has been live Shrimp on jigs and cut Mullet. Also in the mix are black drum if you stick to Shrimp. The Snook, Common are getting very frisky and just in time for season opening. Most of the guides are encouraging catch and release to continue helping the numbers grow, but there were a few that found their way to the cleaning table. Live Pilchards are at the top of the list, but quite a few were caught using Mirrolure 19 and 17MR’s. As the waters warm the bite can only get better and better as Snook move toward spawn. Sheepshead are still top of the dinner list in the backcountry with a close second being Seatrout, Spotted. Both are feeding well with good size all the way around. Anglers have just a few more weeks to get on the sheepshead. They aren’t real fond of warm water and they’ve almost completed their spawning season. The Seatrout are on the flats in about 3 feet of water. Look for grass mixed with sandy potholes. Popping corks have been the rig of choice with live Shrimp or artificial Shrimp. NOTE: Tarpon season is right around the corner. If this weather holds they are going to show up in late March. Better get your trips book if you want to go!

OFFSHORE – Offshore was going well until we got some early week winds. Up until that time the bite was great. All captains were reporting a mess of Snapper, Gray in close. Out a bit further anglers will find Snapper, Yellowtail and a hot and heavy grouper bite. Some other notable fish from the Gulf were Cobia and some huge Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater).

BAIT REPORT – The freshwater mix has prevented a lot of Whitebait so far. There are some Sardines that can be found in the offshore working well for bait.

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – Things are starting to warm up. Reds (Drum, Red) have been tough and small this week. They are not the main focus for most anglers. Moving around to cover some water has been the best method to hook them because they are so spread out. Snook, Common are still on the slow side as well but they are starting to improve with the water temperature increase. Look under docks, bridges and mangroves to find them. Anglers are throwing Shrimp and plastic flukes to hook them. Pompano, Florida have been swimming the beach this week along with some scattered Flounder (Flounder, Southern & Flounder, Gulf). We expect to see Cobia on the nearshore reefs as well. March 19th is Fishin’ Franks Bait & Tackle’s Tent sale! Stop in and take advantage of the great deals!

OFFSHORE – Snapper (Snapper, Gray & Snapper, Yellowtail & Snapper, Lane) and Grouper, Red are doing well. Squid and Sardines have been the key to reeling them in. Jigging Spoons has been productive as well.

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – It’s been tough with all the water releases as of late. A lot of the good fishing spots are pretty mixed up and not holding fishable numbers. The oyster bars by the shoals and creeks have been ok, especially during the incoming tide. They are producing some great keeper Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) on live Shrimp under a cork. Similar artificials are a great choice. The flats and bars will produce as well. There are some nice Reds (Drum, Red) just over 7 lbs. The bite is not hot but if you put your time in you’ll find some good sizes. There are some small Snook, Common, in the area however they are not the target of most anglers. The South end has been pretty mixed so try to avoid that area.

BAIT REPORT – There are no baitfish to be found this week.

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – The weather and water quality issues have been the headline for the previous week. An abundance of rain, very windy weather and cold temperatures have all plagued anglers and has made finding fish a challenge. But it’s not impossible if you are willing to work at it. The forecast calls for warming weather and a drop in rain chances. That should make fishing considerably easier as we move toward the end of February. Let’s face it folks, winter fishing has always been a challenge in Southwest Florida compared to the good ol’ summertime and this winter has proven to be one of the toughest. Capt. Greg Stamper of Snook Stamp Charters said that a week of windy days made for some interesting fishing. Between the cold fronts, charters were shuffled around and his clients still got out a few times to catch fish. Throughout the week he moved around a lot to find areas that gave better shelter from the winds. That helped find the Redfish (Drum, Red), Seatrout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Sheepshead with the Trout and Sheepshead being the go-to’s. Redfishing in the back bays, although sparse at times, did come into play in areas that had deep drops. The Redfish were laying up on warmer flats where they can slide into deeper water when disturbed. Shrimp and cut baits worked best with smell being key when fishing the silty water. Working soft baits slow and low, like DOA shrimp or swim baits, also got results if you put time into working shorelines and oyster bars. The local waters have had some issues over the past week with freshwater being dumped down the Caloosahatchee river and a bit of red tide showing up a few miles offshore. Water quality will most likely be key as we fish through this next week and salinity levels are lower than usual. Finding cleaner water and areas with good tidal influence should be an angler’s best bet. Capt. Jon Fetter of Catching The Cure Charters noted that the dirty water in addition to the cold, windy weather has made for tough conditions for anglers the past week. The key to locating and catching fish has been to find cleaner water. There, anglers will find spotted Seatrout willing to take live Shrimp under popping corks or jig heads tipped with Shrimp bounced along the bottom. Remember to work baits slowly through the water and low in the water column. The cooler water makes the fish sluggish and they don’t chase anything moving too quickly. Capt. Jon said to be sure to try artificial baits like curly tail grubs or paddle tail grubs on small jig heads. Rootbeer, chartreuse and watermelon red were his colors of choice. There are also plenty of Sheepshead out there. They are mixed sized and anglers might have to go through a few shorts to find the keepers but the bite will keep ’em busy. Capt. Larry Hendricks of Tall Tails Charters said that the dark freshwater continued to flow down the Caloosahatchee River from Lake Okeechobee. Between wind and rain his trips were limited over the past week, but his phone has started ringing again thanks to the nicer weather. Despite the conditions, the lower areas of Pine Island Sound were still giving up a lot of sheepshead and a few redfish. Those looking for spotted seatrout needed to put a few more miles on the boat to get to the clearer waters north of the power lines near Chino Island. The bite had been good there on bait under popping corks.

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – The wind has been strong in this area as of late. There has also been a bit of fresh water mix as well. The creeks have been the best place to fish in Pine Island Sound and Estero Bay. Hendry Creek particularly along with Still River and Imperial River have been hot due to the warm rain runoff. They are holding some Jacks on live bait or similar soft plastics. Sheepshead are on fire throughout structure such as docks. Look for moving water and throw a little piece of Shrimp on a split shot. Seatrout (Seatrout, Spotted) are on the flats. They are loving the sunny spots in the early afternoon when the water is warm. The sizes are a fair mix of shorts and legal. In the same area there are also some nice Pompano, Florida turning up. 3-4lbs has been the average. Reds (Drum, Red) and Snook, Common are weak so far. Anglers who put their time in can expect some smaller sizes. They are not the focus for most anglers at this point. Your best bets this week are to look for warm, moving water and avoid sandy areas.

OFFSHORE – There has been a little bite of Red Tide offshore along with heavy winds which have stopped a lot of anglers so far. When there is a break in the wind the Snapper, Gray have been hot. The sizes are up to 16 inches and anglers are hitting their limit. There are some Snapper, Mutton mixed in which is not common but they are present. There are also some catch and release Grouper, Gag that anglers are having fun catching. A few Shark (Shark, Bull & Shark, Bonnethead & Shark, Atlantic Sharpnose) reports have turned up which is unusual for winter but no one is complaining.

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – The main focus lately has been the great Seatrout (Seatrout, Spotted) bite. Most are around 20 inches and bigger. Smaller ones can be difficult to find. Minnows and similar artificial plugs are the best bait this week. The afternoon is when the action heats up during the tide change which provides cleaner water. Pompano, Florida are biting closer to the passes while the Sheepshead are heating up as well. They can be Found in the harbors, bays and nearshore reefs. They are great sizes and will hit Shrimp and Clams so far this week.

OFFSHORE – The offshore fishing has been quite productive this week. There are plenty of Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater) hanging around the reefs so far. There are also reports of Cobia swimming around. Kings (Mackerel, King) are still being caught farther out with Grouper, Red and Snapper, Gray in the deeper water. Frozen Cigar Minnows are the hot bait to catch any of these this week.

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – The weather has really been a problem for anglers lately. There has been a brief break recently for anglers to get out. Sheepshead and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) have been the main target. Reds (Drum, Red) have been spotty. They are present however difficult to find since the water temperature has dropped. The passes from Pine Island Sound down through Estero Bay Pass are holding pompano (Pompano, Florida), Trout (Seatrout, Spotted & Seatrout, Silver), Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) and quite a few Snapper, Gray. They are all decent sizes, not all are keepers but there are a good number of decent ones. DOA lures in New Penny seem to be key this week. A slow crawl along the bottom are hitting the Trout well. No one is using corks however everyone is using a jig and Shrimp or jig and gulp Shrimp walking it across the bottom. Anglers are sticking to the creeks to find a lot of fish as they seem to be schooled up there as well as sheltered from the weather. Reds (Drum, Red) have been spotty in the creeks however the anglers that are catching them are using cut Ladyfish. Ladyfish are also swimming the passes this week. Live bait is difficult at best otherwise. We hope to see some Tarpon turn up within the next few weeks depending on the weather.

OFFSHORE – There were a few Kings (Mackerel, King) reported a little while ago. They were coming up close to shore however the bite seems to have dissipated since. Anglers were trolling dark colored rapalas and mann’s stretches in purple. The bite on these were We hope to see this increase once the weather increases again.

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – Most of the fish in the area have been relegated to the backcountry due to the wind this week. The bay is holding Sheepshead, Pompano (Pompano, Florida), Flounder (Flounder, Southern & Flounder, Gulf), Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Reds (Drum, Red). Reds and Trout are doing extremely well due to the cooler temperature as they school up in shallow holes. The backcountry fish prefer live Shrimp or similar soft plastics since the tide is so low and the jig is not productive. This has been the main focus of most anglers avoiding the harsh weather and small craft warnings on the outside and offshore. The piers that move into the bay are producing Sheepshead, Snapper (Snapper, Red), Flounder and Drum (Drum, Black). Live Shrimp has been the preference of most fish this week with the exception of Sheepshead who always love live Fiddler Crabs. Anglers must look for moving water in the middle part of the day when the sun warms the water a little bit to find the best bite.

INSHORE – Sheepshead, Pompano (Pompano, Florida), Flounder (Flounder, Gulf & Flounder, Southern) and Whiting (Kingfish, Southern & Kingfish, Northern) are all mixed in with some Drum and Reds in the bay. Anglers are also fishing off the pier to find them. Towards Pine Island sound you can find some good sized Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) in the grass. Minnows have been a hot bait along with Mirrolures this week.

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – There is a ton of action throughout the inshore this week. Tarpon are still biting as they follow the bait run moving during the front. Reds (Drum, Red), and big Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are still hanging around on the flats. The slightly cooler weather has made the Trout particularly more active. They are loving live Shrimp or similar artificials this week. Flounder (Flounder, Southern & Flounder, Gulf) as well as Pompano, Florida are also in the backcountry this week. The sizes have been great so far so most anglers are having no trouble hooking fish in this area.

OFFSHORE – The fishing was great, especially coming down the coast before the recent front. Kings (Mackerel, King) and Cobia were biting well. Grouper, Red and Snapper, Gray have been great off the bottom.

BAIT REPORT – Cigar Minnows, Threadfins and Pilchards are all migrating to this area with the recent fronts moving in. There will be plenty of bait for anglers to stock up on.

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – The sound is producing a lot of great Snook, Common, Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Reds (Drum, Red) on artificials this week. Soft plastics such as a DOA shrimp or Vudu Shrimp usually work well. In the nearshore there are also Mackerel, Spanish and Tarpon swimming the reefs.

OFFSHORE – There is still a solid bite in the offshore this week. Anglers are seeing Kings (Mackerel, King) swimming above some Snapper, Yellowtail and Cobia off the bottom. Everyone is very excited for the reopening of Grouper, Red on January 1. The bite is expected to be on fire.

BAIT REPORT – With the warm weather bait has moved back in on the flats. Anglers can stock up on Pilchards or Greenbacks (Threadfin) this week.

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) bite has been great around Pine Island this week. This is usually where anglers catch the bigger sizes. Estero bay has picked up on the Trout bite as well. They are holding up in the open grass flats at 3-5 ft of water and can be caught with Shrimp under a popping cork. The Reds (Drum, Red) have been great despite the cold weather. We expected the bite to slow down but it has remained consistent. The Pompano, Florida that have shown up in shallow water are around 4 lbs. They are loving Shrimp on jigs that are bounced off the bottom this week. They can be found in only 1.5-2 ft of water and are not difficult to pick out. The backcountry is holding some great sizes of Reds, Pompano and Trout as well. The Sheepshead bite is not what we have expected for the area as the temperature has not dropped enough to heat up the bite. There have been a few Shark, Bonnethead swimming that are roughly 3-4 ft long and great catches for kids out during the holiday. Live bait under a popping cork is the best method to catch which is great entertainment for kids. They are holding up on flats. There is also a good mix of Jacks (Jack, Crevalle) and Ladyfish swimming the inshore. The Ladies are turning up around 2-3 lbs which is surprisingly big for inshore fish. It is a great idea to bring lots of different bait with you this week as there is such a mixed bag of fish swimming.

OFFSHORE – Anglers heading out to the gulf are cruising the Crab pot buoys using live Shrimp. They are doing well. The bite is not on fire however you can take some dinner home. There are a lot of good undersized ones too, at least one on every buoy. Along the same line there is a good run of Cobia. They are hanging around the bottom on rock piles, ledges and edges. Now that Grouper, Gag is closed they are a great alternative. Some of them are even on the surface in pairs and triples so anglers can look for them on the top.

BAIT REPORT – The bait is so thick this week you only need one cast of the net to stock up. Shrimp, Ladyfish and Mullet are all running with even a few Pilchards. It’s a great time to stock up along the beaches with such a mixed bag of fish swimming.

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – There is quite a bit of action from the inshore this week. Reds (Drum, Red) are picking up nicely around the oyster bars and mangroves using live Shrimp on jigheads or under a popping cork. Cutbaits and cut ladyfish are producing well too. Anglers should look for good tide movement. The flats in the grassy areas at 3-5 ft of water are turning up huge Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Ladyfish on Shrimp under a popping cork. The Ladies can be caught and used as cut bait for Reds. Pompano, Florida are also hitting the same baits as Trout if anglers are drifting it over the grass. The Sheepshead are beginning their move in although the water temperature has not yet dropped much. They have been reported up to 18 inches so far and that is expected to increase. The weather looks good for the weekend despite the cold front coming in. It’s difficult to tell how this will affect the fishing at this time however it is guaranteed to increase the Trout and Sheephead bite.

BAIT REPORT – Ladyfish are swimming the inshore this week and working well for Reds.

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – The focus continues to be on Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) this week as anglers are finding similar results to last week. They are coming in with good numbers and sizes. The larger fish are still out in the Pine Island Sound. The populations are increasing dramatically in anywhere from 3-5 ft of water. They are preferring artificial bait this week including DOA Shrimp or gulp Shrimp on a jig. Reds (Drum, Red) are also tailing in the Sound on the low tide. This is typical during this time of year and the most productivity is coming from gold spoons. The Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) are absolutely out of control on the beaches so far. It’s hard not to catch them. Spanish are schooled up and anglers are protected from the wind in this area so it’s a great location to fish. The Pass is holding some good sizes of Pompano, Florida, Silver Trout (Seatrout, Sand) and Mangrove Snapper (Snapper, Gray) along the bottom. The Mangrove Snapper have been keeper sizes. Surprisingly there are no signs of Sheepshead so far this week however with the beautiful weather heading into the weekend don’t be stunned if you reel one in.

OFFSHORE – Now that the winds have laid down beautiful weather conditions are expected to continue into the weekend. Anglers will finally have a chance to hit the offshore soon and we expect some great reports. Anyone heading out this weekend can always check out our Tips feature which provides additional information and suggestions to help improve the catch.

BAIT REPORT – There have been no reports of bait swimming so far this week. Most anglers are throwing artificials as they are working best for the target fish. Book your Holiday trips with Capt. Rob Mody now before spots fill up!

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) bite has been the headliner this week. Anglers are extremely excited because they have been getting bigger and bigger. There is now a nice mix of 16-17 inch fish swimming in the area. Water temperatures are still up at the moment but with the mid-week front moving it they will perk up and sizes will increase just in time for the weekend. The best bait is Live Shrimp under a popping cork. Artificials like DOAs in glow white color have done equally as well under a popping cork too. The bigger Trout are being caught near Sanibel and Pine Island on the flats just North of Chino Island. In this area, great big sizes are the norm. The bite is expected to continue into the weekend. There have also been some unusual reports of Shark bites around the lighthouse at night. Two gentlemen also reported catching a Shark, Tiger and Shark, H.H. -Smooth that, from pictures, looked to be roughly 7 ft. long.

BAIT REPORT – Along the beaches there have been some great opportunities for live bait such as Shrimp and Pilchards. They have been swimming right along Lovers Key and the middle bridge to Sanibel. The run is completely dependant on the wind however as it can push them out. Book your Holiday trips with Capt. Rob Mody now before spots fill up!

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – The temperature has dropped in this area which has actually improved a lot of the fishing. The best catches have come from Pine Island Sound on the South end all the way down to the Sanibel Flats. The power lines have been a key spot as well. They have all been producing Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) in various sizes from small to gigantic. The Sheepshead have been doing well too. Tarpon have become more timid however by the weekend they should turn back on and be chasing Pilchards. Netting bait may be a problem this weekend if the wind does not die down. This has made for a good Red (Drum, Red) bite as they seem to love the wind. Most anglers are throwing live Shrimp on jigs along the bottom. The nearshore has not had many reports this week as boats have had a hard time even getting out this far to the buoys. The Tripletail has been phenomenal in this area and if the conditions calm down should continue over the holiday weekend. Anglers should take live Shrimp on small hooks to catch them. There is not necessarily a preferable tide however the inbound afternoon and falling morning has been great lately.

OFFSHORE – It has been a tough go in the deeper water as of late. The unfavorable weather has made getting on the water extremely difficult for anglers. Anyone who would like to head out on the water this holiday when conditions lie down can always check out our Tips feature which provides additional information and suggestions on how to improve your catch.

BAIT REPORT – Shrimp and Pilchards are both running this week although they may be hard to bring in with all of the wind in this area. Book your Holiday trips with Capt. Rob Mody now before spots fill up!

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – The beaches and Boca Grande Pass are filled with both Tarpon and Ladyfish this week. Pompano, Florida have had a great bite as well as they are continuing to move in. The Red (Drum, Red) bite continues on most any bait live or dead.

OFFSHORE – At roughly 45-50 ft of water anglers are seeing lots of Mackerel (Mackerel, Spanish & Mackerel, King) at the Boca Grande pass. They have been mixed in with Bonito, Little Tunny as well as some Tuna, Blackfin. Bluerunners, spoons or stretch 30s on the troll has been the most effective method. Some anglers are attempting to mix in some Grouper, Gags with their catch on the same lures, although this is spotty. They are in 35-50 ft of water. Absolutely nothing has been reported past 60 ft of water this week. The weather is too rough past this point so most anglers are staying inside this mark.

BAIT REPORT – Bluerunners, Speedos and Spanish Sardines are all active this week and live baiters are catching them on Sabiki rods before they head out to the offshore.

Boca Grande / Pine Island

INSHORE – Pompano, Florida are doing quite well inshore this week. The bite has increased and they have moved in slightly. Permit and Snook, Common are becoming more active as well since the water has cleared. Reds (Drum, Red) are always biting, even closer to Christmas. They are loving the clear water as well and are biting any live or dead bait anglers can throw.

OFFSHORE – The deep water temperatures are ideal right now as they have started to cool off and become more comfortable for the offshore fish. Mackerel, Spanish are biting along with some Kings (Mackerel, Kings) both hitting anything live, preferably Shrimp. Bonito, Little Tunny have been swimming in the deeper water as well so many fish are chasing them. Cobia have been biting well on Pinfish and Blue runners. Anglers can use a sabiki rod to hook them. There is a lot of action offshore at this time so anglers should not have trouble reeling something in.

BAIT REPORT – There are a ton of bait running right now. Pilchards are in the gulf. Sardines, Cigar Minnows, Blue Runners and Pinfish are all fairly easy for anglers to get their hands on at this time.

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

INSHORE – There is some really good fishing in the backcountry at this time. The rainfall has finally cleared out the freshwater intrusion and the Reds (Drum, Red) and Snook, Common are biting. There are some Seatrout, Spotted showing up in bigger sizes along with lots of Flounder, Gulf in keeper sizes from the beach. All of these species are loving live or dead bait right now.

OFFSHORE – The deep water has provided a variety of fish as the water temperatures are becoming a little more comfortable. The Snapper (Snapper, Mutton & Snapper, Gray & Snapper, Yellowtail) and Cobia have been fishing well and are biting on Pinfish and Blue Runners. These can be caught on a Sabiki rod. Dolphin have also been swimming along with tons of Bonita. The Grouper, Gag are coming in closer and while still open, keep in mind Grouper, Red is now closed. Anglers are chunking for these.

BAIT REPORT – Along the breaches there are Menhaden and Pilchards running. Pinfish and Blue Runners are a little further offshore. These can be caught on a Sabiki rod OF NOTE – Fisherman’s Edge Tackle is beginning to stock up on their seasonal Crabs. Come in and stock up!

Pine Island / Boca Grande Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Heavy seas and high winds up to 25 miles per hour have produced conditions that have not been ideal for boaters to head out into the deep water. We are expecting results to pick up once the weather lies down. If you decide to head out this weekend you can feel free to check out our Tips feature which provides additional information on the fish of your choice.

INSHORE – The backcountry has provided a bit better weather conditions for inshore fishermen. Snook, (Snook, Common), Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Redfish (Drum, Red) have all been very active chasing after the live Shrimp and Minnows, sometimes under a popping cork depending on the tide. Most guys are using live bait as it will be heading out for the season soon so it may be the last chance to take advantage. As an artificial alternative, topwaters, swimming plugs, mirrolures and mirrominnows have been working very well. The time of day has not had a huge effect on the catch however it is important to find moving water. The tide is generally shallow heading into the winter months so this may be a challenge. Both incoming and outgoing tide have done well, so once you find movement you will find fish.

BAIT REPORT – Small Sardines, Herring, Pilchards and Pinfish will be heading out soon as the water temperature has already started to drop. Keep a lookout and stock up while you can.

OF NOTE – If you are having trouble catching live bait you can always head down to Fisherman’s Edge Tackle for live Pinfish and Shrimp in addition to lots of frozen bait.

Pine Island / Boca Grande Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – When the winds aren’t blowing at what feels like 50 miles an hour, Blackfin Tuna are at about 45 ft. so take advantage of this because it is not often that they come in that close. Use some small baitfish and you’ll be sure to hook a nice sized Tuna. Remember to match the hatch. Try and throw bait you are seeing in the area, the fish will recognize if something’s not right and avoid it at all costs. If you’re not sure, you can always check out our Tips section by tapping your favorite fish. This will give you some ideas. We are also seeing Kingfish, Cobia, and Sharks. Migratory fish are making their way down from the North already as they follow the bait as the North Gulf cools down.

INSHORE – The wind is lessening every day but until it’s calmer you can stay close to find a little more manageable water. There’s a few different fish along the shores right now. We are seeing Snook, Trout, Redfish and Flounder. Don’t be surprised if you even reel in a Mangrove Snapper. You can use a wide variety of baits, they’re hungry and not picky however Shrimp and Minnows are the most popular. If you’re in the bay you won’t have too much trouble catching some Redfish as they have been hungry! Looking forward to this weekend; keep an eye out for moving water as it is shallow between 3-4 feet in some areas. As long as the water is moving you don’t need to worry about incoming or outgoing tides because both are producing similar fishing.

BAIT REPORT – Bait has been running wild here including Threadfins, Sardines, Glass Minnows, and Anchovies. A quick and easy way to find these is to locate the birds, and they’ll be right underneath. Let the birds do the work for you.

Pine Island / Boca Grande Fishing Report

OFFSHORE: Just when things began to improve for offshore fishing, the rains returned and southwest Florida has gotten more than its share of rain this year, in addition, the wind has prevented all but the hardiest from staying out in the Gulf too long. We have also experienced some of the highest tides of the year due to the “super moon” this week. That being said, however, some anglers are reporting a bit of luck with Flounder and Pompano just outside the passes to the Gulf. Those anglers who have managed to get farther out before the weather gets to them are catching Grouper and Snapper at about 12 miles out near the reefs, using cut bait down at or near the bottom in 60 -100 feet of water.

INSHORE: All the rain washing down the rivers has made the water very murky and has messed with the regular salinity levels. You can still catch plenty of Mangrove Snapper, Ladyfish, Redfish and Snook, but you’ll have to put the bait right in front of them or fish at night where the lights will attract them. Tarpon fishing is at its peak now and there are plenty of big ones in Charlotte Harbor, Boca Grande and in the flats in and around Boca Grande. Successful and seasoned anglers use a two-pronged strategy for catching tarpon, but first, a note about using light line. If you are using light line to target Tarpon, be aware that if you do not land them and remove the hook, there’s a good chance that they will die. If you are targeting Tarpon, then make sure you are using at least 40-60 lb braided line with 50 lb test flouro. Now for the two pronged approach: Start out by looking for Ladyfish. You can troll at 2-3 mph with a Minnow type jig or lure in about 6-8 feet of water. Once you find the Ladyfish, stop and cast for them until you have put 4 or 5 into your bait well. Next, get your boat barely up on a plane and begin looking for large fish rolling near the top of the water. Once you find the Tarpon, move your boat into the shallow water along a sand bar, freeline a Ladyfish, toss it toward the Tarpon and put your rod into a sturdy pole holder. While you are waiting for the Tarpon to grab your bait, use another rod to cast a D.O.A baitbuster, root beer color or dark green, on four feet of leader. One of these two methods should hook you up with the fight of the week! Spanish Mackerel and Jacks are running in schools just inside and outside the passes and some anglers are catching them on shiny jigs.

PIERS/BRIDGES: at the 41 bridges, anglers are still finding Redfish, Black Drum and Tarpon. Pilchards are abundant near the bridges and along the shallows near the banks, and those casting nets for them are coming up with all the bait they need. Alligator Creek still has some nice snapper in the channel, but they are getting a bit harder to catch due to the murky water. The Bay Shore Piers are good for Red Fish, and Black Drum, but not in the numbers we saw last week. All the piers are producing Snook at night. Englewood Pier (Tom Adams Bridge) is still seeing some large Redfish and a few Black Drum on shrimp and pinfish. Cape Haze Reef is again reporting schools of Spanish Mackerel and some very big Mangrove Snapper on Pilchards. The Mackerel are hitting jigs and small bait fish. Charlotte Harbor is still pretty full of Tarpon, but you will need to look for them near the bigger holes.

BAIT: Pilchards are pretty much everywhere. Look for them along the banks and anywhere there is a current, especially near bridges and inlets to creeks and bays. They will look like raindrops on the surface, and if you don’t get them on the first cast, try using a ¼ inch cast net. Remember to return any trout, snapper or other game fish you might catch accidentally.

Pine Island / Boca Grande Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Last week, they were doing very well on Red Grouper. Lots of Triple Tail on top as well.

INSHORE – There have been lots of Redfish in the area. The Redfish are showing up in pretty good sized schools with usually about 20 to 100 fish in a school. They are typically 29 to 34 inches in length. The early morning fishing is the best. A lot of people in the area follow the schools of Finger Mullets. Where there are Finger Mullet schools, there are typically a big school of Redfish following. You will also see tailers on low water. For bait, a lot of guys are throwing live Shrimp on jigs. Artificials are working really well. Top waters this time of year are working well such as skidder walks and top dogs. Pompano have been on the inside of the passes, but there haven’t been a lot of them. As the water cools off, we’ll be seeing more Pompano.

BAIT REPORT – This is the time of year that the Finger Mullet schools start coming into the back bays. The bait is quite small right now so most people are using cut Ladyfish and live Shrimp.

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

OFFSHORE: Well, the rain has certainly not been a friend to anglers; still from 25-30 miles out, anglers are catching plenty of Red Grouper on sardines. At about 15 miles out, there are plenty of Mangrove and Lane Snapper, along with some Grunts and Porgies. Some nice Amberjacks are hanging out on the reefs and wrecks, with more abundant fish at the wrecks (They love mackerel and some of the larger bait fish). The cobia are out in the deeper water with an occasional bite close to the passes.

INSHORE: Bokeelia (Pine Island) is flush with Snapper and Red Fish at the mouth of the channel, and while the Snapper are hot for shrimp, the Red Fish are striking dark lures and spinnerbaits as well as pinfish and pilchards. Bull Bay and Turtle Bay are seeing more Snook moving into the bay and plenty of Snapper at the inlets. The Cape Haze Reef is flush with Spanish Mackerel and more Sharks than most anglers probably want. The Mackerel are hitting shrimp, small bait fish and shiny silver lures while the sharks are taking just about anything. Beware while bringing in a ladyfish or trout, as the sharks will probably want them too, and you’ll find yourself with more fight than you bargained for. Charlotte Harbor is loving all the Tarpon and successful anglers are bobber jigging with shrimp and bait fish.

PIERS/BRIDGES: at the 41 bridges, anglers will find Redfish at the north and south ends. Tarpon are showing up at night and late in the day. Alligator Creek is producing some nice snapper in the channel (on shrimp) and some nice Redfish at the mouth of the creek (on shrimp and pinfish). The Bay Shore Piers are good for Redfish, Tarpon and an occasional Black Drum. Englewood Pier (Tom Adams Bridge) is getting its fair share of Snook (mostly at night and early morning) and Tarpon. Gilchrist Pier is reporting Jacks and Snook. The I-75 bridges (boat access only) have Snook, Tarpon and Black Drum, the bait of choice being pinfish or small bait fish on a live bait rig. Laishley Pier is not so hot during the day, but the Snook and Redfish are definitely coming out after dark. Lemon Bay is good for plenty of Redfish in the sand holes just inside the ICW on the flats. Cut bait like Ladyfish or Sardines seem to be the best bet. The Snook inside the bay are under the docks, and around the bridges. El Jobean Pier and the Myakka River are plum full of Tarpon, and they are just about everywhere.

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

OFFSHORE: This week, the weather is back to fairly normal with clear, warm mornings and afternoon thunderstorms. From just offshore to about 15 miles out, anglers will hook up with snapper, Spanish Mackerel and those hard-fighting Bonita. Farther out at about 25 miles, anglers are reporting some decent sized Grouper fishing with cut bait in about 80 -150 feet of water. The wrecks and reefs are producing some nice Permit. The passes, such as Boca Grande Pass, Punta Rassa, Red Fish, Captiva, Little Gasparilla, Stump Pass and Venice Pass are all producing some very good sized Snapper, again using live shrimp on bottom rigs. As the water begins to cool down, more fish will move into the passes and the ICW (Inter-coastal Waterway).

INSHORE: The good news is that Hurricane Erika did not dump as much rain on the Port Charlotte / Boca Grande area as first predicted. The bad news is that the rain from central Florida has brought murky waters to the Peace and Myakka Rivers and hence the ICW (Inter-Coastal Waterway) is also a bit murky. Still, patient anglers will catch plenty of Trout in 4-8 feet of water using bobbers with live shrimp for medium sized Trout and bobbers with Pinfish for larger Trout. Don’t be surprised, though, if a few Sharks end up on some lines while anglers are pulling in the Trout. Bokeelia and Jug Creek Shoals continue to provide plenty of action for Trout and Redfish on live Shrimp and smaller bait fish. Bull Bay and Turtle Bay continue to be good bets for Redfish near the bars to the entrances of both bays. Most anglers are using live shrimp and small bait fish both on bobbers and cast on circle hooks with no weight. The deep holes in Charlotte Harbor are still harboring (pun intended) some Tarpon, a few Sharks, and more than enough of those pesky Catfish. At Hobbs Point, Burnt Store, Pirate Harbor and Two Pines, anglers are catching Trout and Redfish, especially in the slots where these fish run back and forth with the changing tides. Lemon Bay seems to be stock full of Red Fish, and they are hitting Pinfish, cut Ladyfish, and small 1/4 -1/8 ounce gold spoons, the key word being GOLD!

PIERS/BRIDGES: At the 41 bridges, anglers are reporting some nice Trout and a few Tarpon from 25-60 lbs. Alligator Creek Reef (a concrete man-made reef) is hosting some Tarpon and Redfish which are hitting cut bait, Pilchards, and root beer colored lures. The Bay Shore Piers are hot for Snook at night and Shark during the day. Although Snook season is now open, be sure to follow license and limit regulations. Englewood Pier (Tom Adams Bridge) is seeing Tarpon and Snook, mostly at night. During the day, anglers can count on those ever present Mangrove Snapper, some being keepers. Gilchrist Pier lays claim to some pretty good-sized Jacks. Anglers who are sticking around at the I-75 bridges around sunset are hauling in some fun-sized tarpon. Anglers are claiming that Tarpon are “all over the Myakka River and Red Fish are hanging out in the trough by Hog Island.

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Jim told me that the Red Grouper and Gag Grouper are being caught in with the Snapper around the structures. The Migratory fish are around too. There are big Dolphin, above 30 pounds, in the 50-60 mile range out of St. Petersburg / Tampa. You want to hit the Grouper and Snapper with cut bait, particularly Cigar Minnows or live Pinfish. If you want to specifically target the Snapper then you may want to drop down some Shrimp.

INSHORE – The Redfish are going strong in the bay and Charlotte Harbor. Aside from the Reds, there are Mangrove Snapper and we are starting to see more Spanish Mackerel and Pompano. There is not a ton of Pompano, but they are coming. Your bait of choice for everything inshore is going to be Shrimp, or whatever you can cast net locally.

BAIT REPORT – So what can you cast net locally? Pretty much everything. There are Pilchards, Whitebaits, GReenbacks, Threadfin Herring, Grunts, Mud Minnows; they are all out there.

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Wrecks or hard bottom, your regular spots that attract those fish are fishing well. Any kind of feature out there is attracting the fish. Bigger live Pinfish, about the size of your hand, will yield bigger Grouper in the 18 mile range. you’ll be looking for 70 or more feet of water. Not so far offshore you can get on some Spanish Mackerel out from the passes too.

INSHORE – The beaches are carrying Snook as the baitfish are there. You can also find them in the passes and again, throwing what they’re after such as local baitfish is an easy way to catch them. They are great night hunters and fishing them under the lights of docks and piers can be very rewarding.

BAIT REPORT – Pinfish, which are a mainstay in these waters, are in abundance. There’s also a lot of Whitebait along with Greenbacks. Cast netting is a popular and effective way to catch them.

Fisherman’s Edge is open 6 days a week, Monday through Saturday.

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – The Red Grouper and Gag Grouper are biting good. There is also a variety of Snapper – mostly Mangroves, Yellowtails, and Lane. The Lane Snapper bite has picked up in the last little while. Find some flotsam, or weedlines, or debris, and fish those. The Tripletail and Dolphin love to hang out under floating debris. Jim at Fishermen’s Edge managed to catch 15 big Tripletail doing just that about 18 miles out. There is also Bonita and King Mackerel out there with the occasional Cobia mixed in.

INSHORE – Redfish are really biting most of them are in the slot, or just above. They are starting to school up nicely too. They are all over the bay and the fishing on the east end of Charlotte Harbor is good right now. For bait you want to go with Shrimp, small Pinfish under a cork, scaled Sardines, and whitebait. If you are going to go with an artificial then you want to be using soft plastic jerk baits in the flats; like Zoon flukes. Bass assassins are doing good too and that Berkeley Shad is a go to. The Tarpon fishing in the harbor is good right now.

BAIT REPORT – There is lots of bait, and it will be here until the first cold waves come in. There will be a brief dip when they start spawning, but still plenty to cast net – mainly Greenbacks and Pilchards.

Everything is a reasonable price so drop on in!

Pine Island / Boca Grande Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Jim over at Fisherman’s Edge Tackle doesn’t have much to say about the offshore, earlier this week it was really windy and there isn’t much fishing. The southwest wind that recently came through made the offshore quite unfishable.

INSHORE – The nearshore was good Wednesday for the Gag Grouper and Mangrove Snapper. The low pressure setting out in the gulf has been dumping wind, rain, and lightening. However, if you can buzz in and buzz out really quick in between storms you can catch some nice fish. There are big Redfish, most of them are above slot or just within keeper range. The Redfish bite nicely on live bait, especially Shrimp, Pinfish, and assorted white bait. The last little while tides have been so high that guys have been using floats with live bait under them near the mangroves. There are also big Snook, in the 20-25 pound range, but they are closed until September.

BAIT REPORT – There is bait around, mostly Threadfins and Pilchards.

Fisherman’s Edge Tackle does rod and reel repair, sells live and frozen bait, fly tying stuff, and more. They have a full compliment of trolling bait and deep diving plugs, soft plastics – all the stuff you could dream of for saltwater fishing.

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – I spoke with Sean at Gasparilla Marina and he let me know that most everyone has 86d the idea of fishing offshore for the time being. The weather earlier this week was really scattered and rough.

INSHORE – The fishing inshore has been better. In Bull Bay and Catfish Bay there is a good number of reds. The Snook are around the docks, and quite active at night, and we would recommend some nice, relaxing, evening fishing. Snapper fishing around the trestles and structures around the marina and at the pass is quite good right now. Throw some bait along the bottom for Amberjack and Snapper.

BAIT REPORT – Bait is scattered, but Pinfish and Greenbacks are running. There is still enough to put that cast net to work, but you are only going to catch a little bait.

Gasparilla Marina is a full service Marina that offers boat rentals, full storage and 500 wet slips. They also have a full service restaurant and a fuel dock.

    Boca Grande Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Your best bet is to go bottom fishing offshore right now. There is not too much trolling going on because the King Mackerel have scattered for the season. If you are dead set on trolling than your best bet is to stick inshore and troll the coastline for the Cobia. Bottom fishing offshore around the reefs has a great Snapper yield right now, and there has been reports of a few Goliath Grouper. Drop large live shrimp, cut squid, or cut sardines.

INSHORE – The inshore fishing is a bit scattered right now, or at least so I hear from Sean at Gasparilla Marina. The rain at night doesn’t help, and the majority of the Redfish are heading north, but some will stick around here in the back bay. The Snook are in the shallows right now, and the Trout are in the grass beds. Tarpon are in the passes, Pinfish and Shrimp both make excellent baits.

BAIT REPORT – Greenbacks are running right now and the Pinfish are thick enough that it is worth your time to bring your cast net aboard.

Boca Grande / Pine Island Fishing Report

This report isn’t in our normal report format because we have heard that there was absolutely nothing going on at all earlier this week. The Tarpon have moved North, and the guys that are going out are working really hard for what they are getting. Sure you could go offshore and find sharks, but if you are going to sail that far into the gulf you may as well go south. They are struggling to even find the baitfish, and hopefully more fish migrate through soon. The good news is that since there isn’t any fish worth catching, that is the prime location for bait fish to move in en masse and then attract a lot of larger fish to them as they find haven in our waters.

    Boca Grande Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Like last week you’ll find Grouper and Snapper. You’ll want to drop some live bait for them.

INSHORE – It’s Tarpon season and these big guys are still on the beaches and in the pass. Mangrove Snapper, Redfish, and Snook are around too. The Snook bite has also been really good, they are all over the beach mixed in with the Tarpon. For the Tarpon you are going to want to fish in the morning and if they are aggressive you can get away with a topwater plug; if not you want to go with live shrimp.

BAIT REPORT – Jeff over at Gasparilla Marina has seen a good bit of bait around; but bait can be fickle.

    Boca Grande Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Bottom fishing is great right now. There are tons of Grouper and Tarpon out there. You’ll want to drop live bait down for them. There are also some Permit out there. If you can get your hands on some of them they are great eating! The Permit are biting well on crab right now.

INSHORE – The bite has been good on Tarpon, Mangrove Snapper, and Snook. The Snook is closed though so you’ll have to throw those back. Make sure to fish when the water is moving but Jeff at Gasparilla Marina says it doesn’t matter if it is high or low tide. The best bait for these fish is Shrimp, Squid and Whitebait.

BAIT REPORT – Whitebait is the best bait you can use but it has been hard to find over the last few days.

    Boca Grande Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – In the 80-120 foot range you’ll find Grouper and Snapper. Out there you’ll also find Squirrelfish, Pinfish and Greenbacks which you can catch on a sabiki rig. If you’re going offshore for the Kings and Red Snapper use Rapala yellow and pink lures. Shrimp are good too. Fish the humps and structures to find the Kingfish and Cobia.

INSHORE –  Our source at Gasparilla Marina recommends fishing where the flats are meeting inshore structure, mangroves and the back bay which have been sweet spots for Snook, Reds, Trout, and inshore Snapper. Live Shrimp works best here, but Squid bits and Greenbacks should also do the trick.

BAIT REPORT – Bait is scattered with the recent weather change but it tends to be pretty good year round.
