Block Island / New Shoreham Fishing Report

INSHORE – During the Winter season the migratory fish have left the area and the variety of fish available in State waters are slim. Some anglers are still heading out on the few party boats still running. Cod, Atlantic is the main species to keep while winter fishing but they are found mostly in Rhode Island saltwater. Inshore anglers can fish for holdover Striper (Bass, Striped) in many of the tidal rivers. We are looking forward to hearing about the Spring run. As we find varying weather conditions from day to day we encourage all anglers to stay safe and warm when fishing. This is a great opportunity to check out some of the current Pro Angler App features along with new additions coming soon. We look forward to bringing you more great Pro Reports when the bite fires back up.

Block Island / New Shoreham Fishing Report

INSHORE – During the Winter season the migratory fish have left the area and the variety of fish available in State waters are slim. Anglers who are determined to head out can fish Providence River up by the Power Plant. This area is typically holding resident Stripers (Bass, Striped) that can be fished all Winter long. Some anglers are heading north to fish freshwater or ice fish when the water is solid. White Perch (Perch, Silver) can also be found in the shallow water. Towards Block Island you may find some Stripers. Tautog are only available for catch and release fishing at this time. Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] are in deeper water. There’s not much to do offshore through the winter aside from the Cod (Cod, Atlantic) bite that happens when the bigger charter boats can get towards Block Island. As we find varying weather conditions from day to day we encourage all anglers to stay safe and warm when fishing. Block Island / New Shoreham Fishing Report

INSHORE – When weather allows anglers to get out we expect to see some Cod (Cod, Atlantic) caught around 99-140 ft. The West as well as South of Block Island and the East side of Block Island will do well. Party Boats Seven B and the Frances Fleet will fish for them. Clams will work well to catch them along with Jigs and Berkley Gulp 6 inch swimming mullet as a teaser on an octopus hook. Gulp and White are always good colors to choose. Recently the morning bite has been most productive. We hope to see this continue into next week.

BAIT REPORT – Squid have slowed down, likely due to the wind. If we see some more ideal conditions they may continue to turn up.

INSHORE – Schoolie Bass (Bass, Striped) are swimming the Providence and Seekonk Rivers. Anglers are catching some keepers. In the Connecticut Rivers, there are keeper Bass and plenty of schoolies. Housatonic and the Thames are great places to fish. There are still some Cod (Cod, Atlantic) and Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) around. Anglers are heading out in the mornings to fish for them. Clams will work well to catch them along with Jigs and Berkley Gulp 6 inch swimming mullet as a teaser on an octopus hook. Sea Bass are taking Gulp as well. You can hook them any way for a good bite. Glow and White are most productive colors. MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM THE PRO ANGLER TEAM! PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal more tips and tricks on how to catch!

INSHORE – We still have some inshore schoolie Bass (Bass, Striped). For bigger fish, head to the CT shoreline. Fish the mouths of the rivers and up the Thames and Housatonic rivers for some decent Bass. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal more tips and tricks on how to catch!

OFFSHORE – Tautog are out deep in 100 ft. There are some inshore but they are mostly small. We are seeing great numbers Cod (Cod, Atlantic) along with a decent Black Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) bite. The Cod are up to 15 lbs. The Black Sea Bass are up to 4 lbs. Pollock and Weakfish are mixed in. Anglers are jigging around what they call the East Grounds. This is in Block Island Sound, about 7 miles West. Fish tight to the bottom for Sea Bass. Diamond Jigs with a Berkley Gulp Teaser is working well. The Berkley Mullet is destroying the fish regardless of what shape it’s in. The day bite is most productive. There are plenty more Sea Bass around the island. Find the structure to find the fish. Working some tapered metal swedish style jigs through the whole water column has been productive as well.

BAIT REPORT – Squidding has been great, especially out of Newport and Jamestown.

Block Island / New Shoreham Fishing Report

INSHORE – On the Northern side towards Providence big Bass (Bass, Striped) are just about all moved out except the leftovers around Providence. They are small but can be caught and released all Winter long. Squid or Plugs will do well to hook them. They can be fished on cooler days. Tautog are moving out to deeper water. Anglers are heading out to Coxes Ledge for Cod (Cod, Atlantic). The bite is decent and anglers are getting limits. They are fishing Block Island for them as well. Archie’s Bait & Tackle 401-437-2630 The Cod (Cod, Atlantic) Fishing around Block Island has been great. Everyone is hooking up to fish. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) and Tautog are biting as well. The North side of Block Island around the ledges are holding plenty of Cod. The humps in 60-70 ft have the best sizes. Clams and Squid are doing well to hook them. Anglers are even catching them using Green Crabs while targeting Blackfish (Tautog). Watch Hill Outfitters 401-596-7217 mike@watchhilloutfitters.com www.watchhilloutfitters.com

Block Island / New Shoreham Fishing Report

INSHORE – Tautog are closer to the mouth of the bay. Anglers fishing deeper water are doing well also. Stripers (Bass, Striped) are hit or miss off the beaches from here all the way to Charlestown and even south of Westerly. The Breach ways are hit or miss. Bluefish are scattered around Providence. Boat anglers are having to keep an eye on the wind forecasts. As there’s still a good scattering of fish, all you need to catch fish is a break in the weather. Ocean State Tackle is the largest Squid Jig Supplier in the nation with over 144 different types of jigs. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal more tips and tricks on how to catch!

OFFSHORE – Cod (Cod, Atlantic), and Tautog can be found offshore. Both are very weather dependent. 65-90 ft are best for Tautog. Black Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are still around. Cod have been caught off of Block Island. The bite hasn’t been consistent due to weather.

BAIT REPORT – Squid can be caught around Newport. The bite varies depending on the wind. Yo Zuri Squid Jigs are doing well to hook them. The Rhode Island Bridge / Calamari Causeway is doing well. Peconic Point and Jamestown around Fort Wetherill and Fort Getty are productive as well.

Block Island / New Shoreham Fishing Report

INSHORE – The beaches of the Island are producing Stripers (Bass, Striped). Water temperatures are still around 56 degrees so some big migrating fish should still be around. If you’ve got breaking fish in front of you, try throwing a topwater plug. Incoming tides will help to push the bait and fish in. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal more tips and tricks on how to catch!

BAIT REPORT – There’s some Squid being caught in the Harbor. Tie on Squid jig, head to a lighted dock/structure at night and you should have some luck.

INSHORE – Stripers (Bass, Striped) are more up on the beach. There are tons of schoolies around. Eels are working well at night for anglers casting off the shore or drifting off the beach. Tautog are still biting well in deep water to 70 ft. The numbers are great but there aren’t a ton of keepers yet. Jigs and Crabs are best to hook them. Block Island / New Shoreham Fishing Report

INSHORE – A lot of Striped Bass (Bass, Striped) and Bluefish are coming through on their fall run. Water is still warm and there are tons of Albacore (Bonito, Little Tunny) running as well! Stripers are up to 46 lbs off the beach. The bite is good up and down East Beach and over towards Watch Hill Reef and Sugar Reef. Bass and Bluefish are good on the reefs. Tautog are biting well into this week. Anglers are getting easy limits although the water has been rough. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal more tips and tricks on how to catch!

OFFSHORE – Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) are up in the Long Island Sound area. We expect migrating Bluefin in the next few days. Block Island Sound has been great for them as well. We’ve had a lot of anglers popping in to buy 80lb braid. Cast or troll for them using spreader bars. You can also live line Bunker to hook them as well.

BAIT REPORT – Bunker (Menhaden) continue to run inshore this week.

Block Island / New Shoreham Fishing Report

INSHORE – There are a lot of small Stripers (Bass, Striped) coming off the beach this week. They are not consistent. Most of the smaller fish are coming up at night. Larger fish from the boat are hit or miss as they pass through. Needlefish and New England Lures are working well. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) continues into this week. They are being caught anywhere from 40-60 ft. They are scattered about. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal more tips and tricks on how to catch!

OFFSHORE – Anglers are still heading out to target Bluefin (Tuna, Bluefin) around the cape however the bite has been slim out this way.

Block Island / New Shoreham Fishing Report

INSHORE – The beach scene is holding small Stripers (Bass, Striped) around the island. Nothing is very big as of yet. Some of the bigger sizes are 30 lbs from the boats. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) and Scup are consistent into this week when anglers can get out. Most boaters are heading towards the reefs to find them however there are some nice fish just a bit farther out in deeper water. Clams and Plugs have been the key to hitting just about anything. The wind has been blowing hard the past week so it hasn’t been easy for anglers to hit the water. They are getting out when they can, at no particular time. Cod (Cod, Atlantic) trips are leaving out of Point Judith and Montauk. The bite hasn’t really heated up yet, we expect to see this happen late fall and into December. INSHORE – Bass (Bass, Striped) this week on the beaches at night. In the early morning we caught multiple Bass up to 36 lbs but that took about 3 hours to load up. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are biting well too. Cod (Cod, Atlantic) are slow for us into this week as they have not moved in close yet. Block Island / New Shoreham Fishing Report

INSHORE – Shore fishing is beginning to slow down as the seals arrive. Anglers are fishing New Harbor and around the marinas with the Squid. From the boat, Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) has been great. Stripers (Bass, Striped) are day to day, hit or miss. That said, there’s been some nice fish up to 44 lbs. They are moving through as they head South so be patient. Your best option is to fish from the boats to avoid the seals. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal more tips and tricks on how to catch!

OFFSHORE – It’s been a tough year offshore. There hasn’t been much Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin & Tuna, Yellowfin) caught from boats leaving the island. We haven’t heard much from the Canyons lately but the Hudson has produced some fish.

INSHORE – Albies (Bonito, Little Tunny) are in during the day around the coast guard station. Anglers are catching them on thin metals such as Deadly Dicks. A lot of Bass (Bass, Striped) are around in the evening and into the night. Mostly smaller sizes are being caught however there were a few 30 lb fish caught over the past few nights. There should be some up to 40 lbs. Smaller Bluefish are around but not as many as there were. There are so many Bass that anglers aren’t complaining. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are easily being caught from boats on the Southwest side of the island. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below to reveal more tips and tricks on how to catch!

INSHORE – The South and Southeast side of the island is giving up the biggest Bass (Bass, Striped) for anglers in wet suits working the edge. Corkers and Darters seem to be the ticket. Topwater on the evening light change on the Northwest side of the Island has been productive as well. On the East side in proper conditions we are seeing big Spooks, Pencil Poppers and Plugs working well on the evening light change as well as the morning. False Albacore (Bonito, Little Tunny) are turning up around 1:30 while the morning bite is a bit slower. We expect them to be moving once the weather clears up. They are plentiful and most are keepers. They are taking Squid or Bucktails. Albies (Bonito, Little Tunny) and Bonito (Bonito, Atlantic) are close to shore. Surf casting is picking up. Bluefish are best at the light change and are up to 36 inches. From the boat the ledge is a hot area for Stripers (Bass, Striped) and Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black). Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] has been quiet but if you put some time in and cover a lot of area you will find some slammers.
