Black Rock / South End Fishing Report

INSHORE – During the Winter season the migratory fish have left the area and the variety of fish available in State waters are slim. Cod, Atlantic is the main species to keep while winter fishing but they are found mostly in Rhode Island saltwater. Inshore anglers can fish for holdover Striper (Bass, Striped) in many of the tidal rivers. We are looking forward to the Spring run. As we find varying weather conditions from day to day we encourage all anglers to stay safe and warm when fishing. This is a great opportunity to check out some of the current Pro Angler App features along with new additions coming soon. We look forward to bringing you more great Pro Reports when the bite fires back up.

At this time of year Stripers (Bass, Striped) move inland towards Black Hall River. Mile Creek and Connecticut Rivers should be holding resident fish as well. Most winter fishing for holdover Stripers happens in the Housatonic River. As we find varying weather conditions from day to day we encourage all anglers to stay safe and warm when fishing. Black Rock / South End Fishing Report

INSHORE – This week we expect to see a continuation of the bite last week. Bass (Bass, Striped) will be higher up in the rivers. There may still be a few lingering around the mouths of the Housatonic, Connecticut and Thames rivers. The bigger sizes will still be caught at night. Soft plastics mimicking Herring and Eels will do well. Live Herring is your best bet. You can find Herring in the water all winter. Find the herring to find the fish. To the South we continue to see some Cod (Cod, Atlantic) turn up when the weather allows anglers to get out. Head just South of Block Island for the best bite. We hope to see this continue into next week.

INSHORE – The Housatonic is still loaded with Stripers (Bass, Striped). Plenty of schoolies are mixed in. Soft Plastics are working well but Herring will work well too. Find the bait to find the fish. Fish are moving up river towards the Derby Dam. They’ll be there into January. MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM THE PRO ANGLER TEAM! INSHORE – There are a lot of Stripers (Bass, Striped) in the river. For anglers fishing the Housatonic, Super Hooks and Pro Tail jigs have been working well on the cast. Storm Shads are also productive. Herring are making their way in. Now that Blackfish (Tautog) are closed no one has been catch and releasing them. Gift Certificates are available for the holidays! INSHORE – From shore anglers are fishing up in the Housatonic River. They are seeing a lot of schoolie Stripers and a few up to keeper size. Eels at night are going to trigger a good bite. Plum Island Soft plastics are a great alternative. 9 inch Zman Curly Tail Grubs are also producing well up in the river. The beaches have been pretty quiet. Blackfish (Tautog) is closed as of December 6. They were doing well before the closure. Gift Certificates are available for the holidays! BAIT REPORT – Shad and Herring are in the Housatonic River. Herring can be caught on Sabiki rigs or small jigs. Menhaden (Bunker) have moved out.

INSHORE – There are some Stripers (Bass, Striped) still being caught into this week. They are quite scattered though. Smaller sizes are in the river. Bigger sizes are being caught on the troll in 30-40 ft. Tautog were biting well until last week. Most other areas have found the Tog to be a little deeper now. Try fishing in 50-60ft to get some fish with a little more size to them. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

Black Rock / South End Fishing Report

INSHORE – There are tons of schoolie Bass moving in along the beaches in Fairfield around Seaside Park and Bridgeport. The Housatonic River is loaded with Bass to 35 lbs. Eels and soft plastics are working well. There are still some Bluefish around but most have moved out with the dip in temperature lately. The anglers fishing from shore are catching a lot of schoolies (Bass, Striped) and Shad. The runs of shad are coming in on the daytime incoming tide. Bridgeport Harbor is good for Tautog along with the walls as is New Haven Harbor and Stamford Harbor to the West. Sunken Island is also producing fish. You can also search the rock piles and wrecks in deeper water around 30-50 ft. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are mixed in but slowing down. Towards New London the Connecticut River and Thames River are holding tons of Bass. Anglers are throwing Plum Island Swim Baits for the best bite. This will work well in the Housatonic River as well. These baits are outstanding. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – Anglers are doing well on Cod (Cod, Atlantic) and Pollock this week. Tuna reports are slow. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

Black Rock / South End Fishing Report

INSHORE – Anglers are getting Bluefish and schoolie Bass (Bass, Striped). The Bass are up and down the coast. Most of the fish caught are up to 32 inches. Lately, the best time of day has been afternoons. Tautog are being found by anchor beach from shore. Fish are up to 7 lbs along the walls. Look under the birds for the Blues and Bass in deeper water. Bucktails with a skinny cow strip right under the bait school will work well to hook them. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

Black Rock / South End Fishing Report

INSHORE – Fishing is great this week. In the Sound, we are seeing big Bluefish. Anglers are also drifting Eels for big Bass (Bass, Striped). Less than 30 ft is key. Any wrecks in 35-40 ft of water are holding Tautog. Albies (Bonito, Little Tunny) have slowed down. They are still biting here and there but the numbers are less. From shore, the Housatonic river is loaded with Bluefish and good sized Bass. The Stripers are up to 25 lbs on topwaters such as SP Minnows. Off the beaches we are seeing tons of Blues up to 17 lbs. The anglers chunking have been doing well along with plugs and topwaters. The Estuaries are holding Bass taking white curly tails. Bass and Bluefish are biting in the morning and evening. Look for moving Bunker to find them. Blackfishing (Tautog) is good from New Haven to Norwalk. All the rock piles are packed full of fish. They are biting all day long however higher tides in the afternoon are best. Plum Island Baits are made in Connecticut and working well this week! Jimmy O’s also received new Hogy lures this week too! Stop in and stock up! PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

Black Rock / South End Fishing Report

INSHORE – Blackfishing (Tautog) is at it’s peak. Search shallow water rock piles as well as deep structure. Porgy (Scup) are mixed in with them. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are strong. Limits are easy to get in less than 20 ft of water. Search the rock piles with the Blackfish. Bass (Bass, Striped) and Bluefish are chasing Bunker along the shore. Bluefish are up to 20 lbs with most being are around 10-15 lbs. There’s been numerous Stripers caught up to 40lbs. Most anglers are throwing Topwaters but you can pretty much catch them on anything. As long as you fish a moving tide, fishing should be decent. The slack tide holds more lethargic fish that will reluctantly take bucktails or jigs. Nighttime is producing the bigger Bass. Schoolies are everywhere inshore on the rip lines and outflows. It’s difficult not to catch fish! There hasn’t been too many reports of Albies (Bonito, Little Tunny) as of late. They are still biting to the East and towards Southport. They are found on the smaller bait. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

INSHORE – There has been a ton of big Bluefish around. Fish up to 19lbs are being caught consistently at sundown on topwaters. Lots of Schoolie Bass (Bass, Striped) are mixed in with the keepers. Blackfish (Tautog) are pretty solid this week. Even shore anglers are hooking them around jetties while boaters are working the boulder fields. Tog around 7-8lbs are common while using Green Crabs. Albies (Bonito, Little Tunny) are a bit slower than they have been. Epoxy Jigs are still going to be your best bet when targeting them. Black Rock / South End Fishing Report

INSHORE – Bass (Bass, Striped) fishing was great last week but has slowed into this week. They are mostly schoolies with a few up to 31 inches. The bigger fish seem to have disappeared. Bluefish are staying strong in West Haven and New haven beaches. They are up to 15 lbs. Anglers are chunking and plugging in the harbor. Blackfish (Tautog) just opened and are hitting from shore and boat. Shallow water is fishing better than the break walls. A lot of shorts are on the walls and fish up to 4 lbs are on the rock piles. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are good. There are a lot of fish up to 20 inches mixed with the Blackfish. Anglers aren’t targeting them but they are a turning up. Porgy (Scup) are still around. They are not as thick but are still biting. Albies (Bonito, Little Tunny) are hitting everyday for the past few weeks. The bite is best in the afternoon when the sun is a bit higher. Search the rip lines for them. Birds are diving for bait in the morning but the Albies don’t seem to be on that bait. In the afternoon, however, you will find Albies under the birds and bait. INSHORE – From Stamford to Bridgeport near the shore we are finding a good bite any time of day. Cruising the sound anglers can find schools of Bunker with Bluefish underneath. They are around 4-7 lbs. They will take live or dead Bunker. They are picking them off the bottom so get some weight on and get down. The rocks are fishing well for Stripers (Bass, Striped). Look to the rips on the rocks for bait fish and birds. You can find Bass and Blues busting bait on the surface. The Bass are from 14 inches to 24 inches. Once and awhile there is a large fish mixed in if you head out early in the morning. Sea Robins are everywhere.
