Bath Beach, Fort Hamilton, Bay Ridge Fishing Report

INSHORE – During the Winter season the migratory fish have left the area and the variety of fish available in State waters are slim. Some anglers may still fish for Pollock and Cod, Atlantic. There are not a whole lot of boats still in the water so be sure to check with your local tackle shops to see who is still running trips. For inshore anglers, fishing from docks and piers around NY can yield some great catches of Herring. As long as the bays do not completely freeze over, you should be able to catch them using little more than a rainbow colored Sabiki rig. As we find varying weather conditions from day to day we encourage all anglers to stay safe and warm when fishing. This is a great opportunity to check out some of the current Pro Angler App features along with new additions coming soon. We look forward to bringing you more great Pro Reports when the bite fires back up.

INSHORE – The catch and release schoolie Bass (Bass, Striped) bite is expected to continue into this week. There are some decent sized fish mixed in occasionally. Fish for them with herring around the back. The Pelham Bay Bridge and the East River should produce well. Herring is still a main target for a lot of anglers. They can be found up around Glen Island and Hudson Park. You can Sabiki them up or use a Mustad setup with a clear flash and glow bead. We hope to see this continue into the weekend.

INSHORE – Most anglers are Herring fishing up around Glen Island and Hudson Park. The numbers are quite good. Most of the fish are biting in the late afternoon and right before dark, especially when that lines up with the incoming tide. Sabiki them up using a size 6 hook with clear flash and a glow bead. Schoolies can still be caught in the back by the Pelham Bay Bridge or anywhere in the East river. There plenty of schoolies with a few keepers mixed in. They are providing some great catch and release fishing. They are taking Herring. Stripers (Bass, Striped) are loving the Herring. MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM THE PRO ANGLER TEAM! INSHORE – We are still seeing a few Striped Bass (Bass, Striped) however they are slowing down at this point. Bass will close to harvest in 2 days. Blackfish (Tautog) can still be caught on the wrecks for anglers with boats. They close as of the 14th. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

INSHORE – From shore we are seeing schoolie Stripers (Bass, Striped) with a few keepers mixed in. By the White Stone Bridge our friend Lou was seeing nice keepers on Squid. Swim Shads around Turtle Cove and the bridges are doing well. Fish the top of the tide beginning to move out. Heading out from Brooklyn, nice sized Blackfish (Tautog) are doing well from the boats on the Jersey side. Some fish are around 14 lbs. Fish New Bottom and South Reef. Around Manhattan Island we are seeing the East River producing nice Stripers with Squid and Bloodworms. It’s best to fish around 125th St, FDR Drive and Randall’s Island. Check out the Winter Sale with 10-30 % off everything in the store. Don’t forget about your Rod Maintenance as well! Island Bait and Tackle is open all Winter but closed Mondays and Wednesdays. BAIT REPORT – Anglers are doing well with Herring around Glen Island and Hudson Park. It’s not to hard to hook up to 40 in a day with a Sabiki Rod. There are plenty of Squid being caught at night off the docks. Shine a light for them in the harbors.

Bath Beach, Fort Hamilton, Bay Ridge Fishing Report

INSHORE – Blackfishing (Tautog) in the local area is very good however if you say close in the quality is a bit difficult to find. Quantity is definitely not a problem, they are just small. 3 of 40 will be keepers. The better fish are towards Shrewsbury Rocks. In terms of Bass (Bass, Striped) they are everywhere. Towards the back of Jamaica Bay we are seeing small, border line keepers if keepers at all. Head towards Mammoth County to find bigger fish. From the shore to the boats anglers are doing well. They are swimming in bigger schools. Locally you’ll have to put some time in for keepers. In the mix we are seeing a few Bluefish holding up pretty well. They are taking Bunker. If you are trolling you may find some big fish locally. They are staying deep and away from other anglers. Search the channels towards the shoals in the evening and night. Drifting with Eels has been productive at night. The bite is changing with the weather and size of fish. They are there but you have to roam around to find them and find the sizes. INSHORE – There are Stripers (Bass, Striped) everywhere! They are up to 30 lbs and can be found in the harbor and the beach. There are plenty of shorts as well which is a great sign for the future runs. Jigs are all you need to catch them in 10 ft or less. Out of Red Hook we are seeing Stripers as well as Brooklyn, Manhattan and Battery Park. There are a lot of shorts in this region as well however they are biting. The FDR has been productive as well. From the boats anglers are jigging and from the shore anglers are casting Bunker and lures. Heavy Diamond jigs are great in the rivers. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – The Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) bite has been slow. Hudson Canyon and Veatch Canyon are your best places to search for them. Swordfishing (Billfish – Swordfish) has been pretty steady. They are in 300-600 ft of water. Whole Squid is best to catch them at night with a glow stick and a rattle. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

INSHORE – There are so many school sized fish inshore that a lot of we aren’t heading to the deep water. Stripers (Bass, Striped) are up to 40 lbs. We caught a great fish recently that was 46 inches. The daytime bite using live Eels has been the ticket for the big fish. Bunker Spoons and Swim Shads are also working well if numbers are what you’re after. Blackfish (Tautog) are showing up. They are eating Crabs on unpainted, silver jig heads. The Albacore (Bonito, Little Tunny) are slowing down. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – Tuna (Tuna, Bigeye) up to 130lbs are biting well. A few Yellowfin (Tuna, Yellowfin) are mixed in. Bluefin (Tuna, Bluefin) are on their way. The Bluefin we’ve seen so far are small and can be caught on the troll on the way out or back. Most fish are 100 miles or more offshore. Overnight we are seeing small Swords (Billfish – Swordfish). There’s some decent fish to be caught at the Hudson Canyon. It’s doing much better than the Atlantic Canyon. INSHORE – It’s been mostly Porgies (Scup) and Kingfish (Kingfish, Northern) this week from the shore. There are some Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] from the shore as well however they are better from the boats. Stripers are biting at night. They are drifting eels or chunking Bunker while anchored up. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are pretty good however they are not the main focus. Snapper (Bluefish) are also beginning to pick up farther out. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

BAIT REPORT – Lots of Bunker (Menhaden) are inshore this week.

They are also swimming Battery Park along with a few Bluefish. Bunker has been the best bait to throw. Bluefish are beginning to move in. The Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) have slowed down now that they are closed.

Bath Beach, Fort Hamilton, Bay Ridge Fishing Report

INSHORE – The fishing is very good this week. We are seeing Stripers (Bass, Striped) everywhere. The fish are big and they are hitting live Bunker on the troll. The numbers are great as well. Some are over 50 lbs! The wind has been strong as of late so some anglers are having a bit of a tough time looking for Bunker. The early morning bite has been the most productive on these days. A few Bluefish have turned up as well. The numbers are not hot but the sizes are huge. The Porgy have been really good this week. A lot of good sizes have come in from the bay on the Tin Can ground with fish up to 3lbs. The smaller Bluefish are hitting best right around Sunset. There are some huge sizes up to 15 lbs coming up on Bunker. Fluking [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] has turned on as well down near Caesars Bay and fishing the edges of the channel as well. Squid and Spearing combo is the best bait to hook them. Fish it right on the bottom with a strip of Squid and a whole Spearing. Gulp and Spro Bucktails are also productive.

BAIT REPORT – Blue Clawed Crabs are around, especially the Staten Island area.

Bath Beach, Fort Hamilton, Bay Ridge Fishing Report

INSHORE – Fishing harder now for less fish but managing about a dozen on the half day trips whereas a month ago we would have doubled the those numbers. Also started to incorporate bait into the days you outings This includes cut Bunker or Clams and pretty substantial sinkers 8 to 16 ounces because of the extreme current we fish in. Yesterday evening we worked a good 3 hours for about 6 fish half on bait and half on 3/8 ounce Cabela’s unpainjigs with the 4 inch white Misters twister tails. Then as luck would have it we pull up into our last spot just at dark and pulled 7 more fish a mix of Striped Bass (Bass, Striped) and Bluefish not big fish but we doubled our numbers in 10 minutes.

INSHORE – Fluking [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] is great off Coney island and in the offshore this week. Stripers (Bass, Striped) are really picking up the past week or so. The best sizes are from the boat around the jetties. From shore anglers are heading out early morning or late evening. Bluefish are pretty well anywhere. Anglers are having no trouble hitting a few of them this week.

INSHORE – Fishing remains good but is not as great as it was in the Harbor. We are seeing less Stripers (Bass, Striped) in most of our go to areas. Up to this point we’ve been able to use only artificials but I will start going part of the day with bait. We caught our first bluefish last week and should see more

Gulp and Spearing are best to hook them right now. They will hit any time of day so far and these are the main focus for most anglers this week.

OFFSHORE – There are some Cod (Cod, Atlantic) to be found farther out this week. Most anglers are focusing on the inshore.

INSHORE – Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] has opened a few days ago and the bite is good. There are a lot of keepers and nice fish around. Most guys are fishing the ocean and around Coney Island Flats. Spearing and Berkley Gulp are working best to hook them. Boaters are getting Porgy. A lot of big Bluefish are around, they’re all over. From the shore the Bluefish are hot. When the sun is out the Bass (Bass, Striped) is good but it’s tough to get through the Bluefish. The moving tide in the morning will produce the best Bass bite.

INSHORE – Fishing remains very good.I gotta believe that last year’s cold water simply kept the fish from using NY harbor very heavily, but this year there are many different year class fish around . We have one year old thru 8 year old fish. I start using cut Bunker / Clams in the shell now. Also, Eels work just fine if you can get them. I was told by one bait supplier that Eels are for fall fishing not springtime fishing. Well that’s simply not true. (Bass, Striped)

INSHORE – Battery Park in lower Manhattan has some Stripers (Bass, Striped) coming up this week. They are thick and easy to catch. They are being caught back to back around 40 inches. The nighttime bite is better than the morning. Up the Hudson we are seeing hit and miss Stripers close to shore. This is during the evening during the incoming tide. Everyone is using Bunker, although Bloodworms are working as an alternative.

INSHORE – Striped Bass (Bass, Striped) and Bluefish are in the surf. There are some in the back bay but the best action is in the sand. Bluefish are taking metals and plugs while the Bass prefer Bass Assassins. The Bluefish are around 8lbs and the Bass are varied in sizes. There are mostly smaller sizes with a few keepers and less monsters.

OFFSHORE – Some anglers are bottom fishing for Tautog and doing very well. They are within 20 miles of the shore. We expect this bite to continue into the weekend.

BAIT REPORT – Bunker (Menhanden) schools are out there but beyond casting lengths. They are schooled up. 10% off line spooling with 3 or more reels at Avalon Hodge Podge!

INSHORE – Fishing remains very good lots of Striped Bass 17 to 22 inches. Fun to catch on light tackle. Every day so far we get at least one tackle busting keeper bass 28 to 36 inches. Over the weekend we even had a Dad and an 8 and 6 year old catch 27 bass during a 4 hour trip. Stripers (Bass, Striped) are taking worms, either sand worms or bloodworms. I like 3/8 ounce Cabela’s unpainted jigs with a white 4 inch mister twister. Swimbaits about 4 inches long in a bunker or fluorescent yellow color are also working well. For the bigger fish go with a 7/8 Pradco bomber in yellow or a natural color.

INSHORE – Bass (Bass, Striped) are great in turtle cove this week. Swimmers and Topwaters are working best, especially Yellow popping plugs. The Yellow with Redhead are catching as well. Sizes are good from 24 inches and up. Dawn and dusk during the with an incoming tide is the best time to be fishing. Nice Flounder (Flounder, Southern) and short Bass are coming up on Bloodworms as well. From the Lagoon the Flounder are hot on swim Shads and plugs. Bait is great in this area as well and the numbers are consistent. INSHORE – Things are pretty good in the area this week. Things are still slower than last year but there are still plenty of fish. They are varied in size so far but we are seeing Stripers (Bass, Striped) up to 28 inches. Anglers are throwing artificials but just about anything will work, even worms. 7/8 oz. Bombers are the first choice. Some people are throwing Bunker with some success but it is a bit early and cold for the fish to be active enough to hit it.

Keep in mind they are catch and release right now.

BAIT REPORT – There have been small Herring right on the surface, moving around. They will become more active if the temperature increases a little bit more.

Bath Beach, Fort Hamilton, Bay Ridge Fishing Report

INSHORE – Weather has made inshore inlets and piers fairly inconsistent. Lingcod and Cod (Cod, Atlantic) can be caught while drifting inshore with clams. The Herring reports have been pretty much nonexistent.. Some areas along Long Island have seen Pollock (Pollock, Atlantic) on red, white, or pink artificials. Diamond jigs are also popular. The Pollock fishing is fairly sporadic so there isn’t really a best spot to fish. At least a bad day of fishin’ beats a good day of workin’. Be sure to check out our Fish Guide for tips on Pollock, Cod, and Lingcod for some additional angling tips!

OFFSHORE – The weather and time of year has made reports limited for this area. Most offshore anglers are heading to water up to 180ft deep while looking for Cod (Cod, Atlantic). There’s going to be some Pollock, Lingcod, and Skates (Skate, Winter) in the same areas. Lately the waters to the west of Long Island haven’t fished as well as waters to the east. Dogfish (Dogfish, Spiny) are usually caught out there too. Check out our GPS hotspots for some nonpublic numbers to try on your next outing. Spring is just around the corner and we’re looking forward to getting back on the water with you when the fishing, and hopefully the weather, heats up!

Bath Beach, Fort Hamilton, Bay Ridge Fishing Report

INSHORE – As the weather has cooled down the bite has improved. There has been some great action the past week. From Breezy point to Coney Island Pier there are lots and lots of Bass, Striped. Anglers have been catching them in the double digits as they have been absolutely everywhere. One report even counted 22 at the end of the day. They are all various sizes with some nice keepers too. On the inside the fish are a bit more difficult to get. At the jetty the Bass have been coming up right to the top of the water in the morning. Blackfish (Tautog) have been decent from the boats on the nearshore. Since the water is cooling down this has provided a bit more favorable temperature on the reefs and wrecks. They are becoming spotty from the bridges and rocks as anglers are catching faster than the fish are replenishing. There have been reports of some Blues (Bluefish) up to 15 lbs as well from anglers trolling Bunker spoons and Shad rigs.

OFFSHORE – The weather has been rough in this area lately and this week there have been no reports of anglers heading to the offshore. The weather has become even less favorable and most fishermen are choosing to stay on the inside. If conditions lie down in time for the holidays anglers can always check out our Tips feature which provides additional information and suggestions to help improve the catch. Bernie’s Fishing Tackle can also provide an up to the minute fishing report so everyone knows exactly what to expect on the water.

BAIT REPORT – Live baiters have been heading out in the early morning to catch Bunker (Menhaden) as there are tons swimming at this time. Keep your eye out on Bernie’s Fishing Tackle for upcoming Black Friday deals and sales on select in stock rods while supplies last.

INSHORE – Most anglers are following the Striper (Bass, Striped) run as they are on fire along the beach. Trolling has been the best method using poppers and tins during the day and SP Minnows and Needle Fish in the evening. Black and Yellow/White have been the most effective colors. There are also some Blackfish (Tautog) swimming on the reefs anywhere between 60-100 ft. range. They are taking Green Crab on the outgoing tide.

OFFSHORE – The weather has been rough in this area lately however this has not stopped some determined boaters from heading out. There have been reports of Tuna, Yellowfin at the canyon. They are out there and anglers are chunking for them using Butterfish or Sardines. The early morning and late day bite still remains the best. Dick’s Bait & Tackle 631-281-9070

INSHORE – The fish have been biting very well in this area. Anywhere from the jetty to Sandy Hook to the bridge anglers can expect to hook a Bass (Bass, Striped) or Bluefish. Boats have been drifting eels, trolling or jigging. Pretty much anything and everything is working if you’re on the fish. Bunker spoons have been a successful choice for fishermen as well, as they seem to be hooking the larger fish. Tautog has also had a solid bite chasing green or white crabs and hanging out on the bottom and around shallow structures. There is definitely no lack of fish to be caught in this area. J V Bait & Tackle 718-646-9754

OFFSHORE – The canyons are producing lots of Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna, Albacore). There have also been reports of some Tuna, Bigeye out there as well. Anglers have been chunking using Butterfish or Sardines to hook all three species. The early morning or late evening seems to remain the best time to be out as the action continues to be fairly scattered throughout the day. INSHORE – The Bass, Striped have been absolutely everywhere lately. Big and small they are hitting Live Clams and Bunker. Anglers trolling in water about 40 ft. deep are using Bunker spoons and Shad Rigs. The Bunker Spoons are catching the larger fish. They are also hiding in the deeper water in Ambrose channel. Bass are doing so well right now we even had someone hook 29 fish in under 4 hours. The fishing is much better this week than last, and the expectation is that these conditions will continue on until the end of the season. Tautog continue to do well on Greencrabs as well off the bottom too!

OFFSHORE – Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin & Tuna, Albacore) could not get any better, especially with the nice weather. They have had a great bite lately for anglers that are mostly chunking using Butterfish or Sardines. The best times to head out on the water are either morning or evening since there has not been much action throughout the day. White Water Outfitters www.whitewateroutfitters.net 631-594-3336
