INSHORE – The Spring bite has arrived and is doing well! Big Drum, Puppy Drum (Drum, Red), Bluefish and Sea Mullet (Kingfish, Southern) are swimming the beach this week. There have been Cobia caught about 2 miles off the beach recently as well. The water has warmed up and they are up to 44 pounds. The Sound is just beginning to warm up so we should see big Drum (Drum, Black) in the inlet within the next few weeks. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish listed below the report for more angling tips and tricks!
OFFSHORE – As anglers begin to get back offshore the Wahoo, Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) and Triggerfish (Triggerfish, Gray) are biting well. The water is warming up fast so the bottom fishing is great within 9 miles. The Wahoo are still a bit farther out.

INSHORE – We are seeing the first few days of Spring however it might not look like it outside. Those who made it out to the surf reeled in some nice sized Blow Toads (Puffer, Smooth) around the point and Ramp 43. The same area is holding Puppy Drum (Drum, Red) and Black Drum (Drum, Black) as well. The earlier bite has been better. Prior to the rough conditions there were also reports of Sharks (Shark, Dusky) and Skates (Skate, Winter) on both sides of the point. The nice weather is expected to arrive soon so we hope to see things pick up. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish listed below the report for more angling tips and tricks!

INSHORE – Another tough week of fishing for anglers around here! The wind, rain and cold prevail yet again and the bite has been difficult. Over the weekend we were seeing some fish caught towards Buxton. Puppy Drum (Drum, Red) and Bluefish were the only notable catches. Drum (Drum, Black) and Sharks were also swimming around the point. Towards Frisco and Hatteras the Sea Mullet (Kingfish, Southern) and Bluefish were also decent. More recently the Puppy Drum bite has increased around the boat ramps. You may find a few Puffers (Puffer, Smooth) mixed in too, especially around Frisco. Conditions are still hit or miss however we hope to see things clear up very soon. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish listed below the report for more angling tips and tricks!
OFFSHORE – Though conditions are a bit too unfavorable to get offshore for the most part, there was a few nice Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) caught out of Oregon Inlet over the weekend. Light tackle was the key on the day trip.

INSHORE – Things are just beginning to heat up in the area. Bluefish, Sea Mullet (Kingfish, Southern), tons of Blow Toads (Puffer, Smooth) and tons of Sharks (Dogfish, Spiny) are at the point this week. The howling wind is keeping most anglers inside for the most part. When you can head out during the day bring some Shrimp with you for the best bite.

INSHORE – Towards Rodanthe / Hatteras area we are seeing Puffers (Puffer, Smooth), Sea Mullet and Reds (Drum, Red) turning up off the surf. Red Drum and Shad are coming off the piers and beaches locally but they haven’t fired up. Speckled Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are slowly beginning to bite around the South side of the Pamlico Sound. As the temperature increases the bite will as well. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish listed below the report for more angling tips and tricks! OFFSHORE – There are a lot of big Bluefin (Tuna, Bluefin) being caught in the past few weeks. Search 16-17 miles out around the 65 Degree tower to the Point at 40 miles. They are closer in as well however the steady bite is farther out. Look for the big Blues around the Menhaden. The bigger pods are farther offshore with the warmer water. This should change in the next few weeks. A lot of times anglers are Greensticking for them. Bigger schools have produced fish on the troll or on a vertical jig with live bait. Horse Ballyhoo with Islanders is a productive trolling setup. Bob’s Bait & Tackle 252-261-8589February 21, 2017

INSHORE – To the South towards Belhaven The wind and weather has kept a lot of anglers off the water so far this week. When conditions are a bit more favorable we expect to see some Stripers (Bass, Striped) in the rivers. INSHORE – This time of year there aren’;t many tourists however there are Puppy Drum and Black Drum on the beach. They are mostly being caught on live bait. The Sound is pretty cold at this time of year. It should crank up around March. We expect fishing to remain the same and as the water stays below 60 degrees the Puppy Drum (Drum, Red) and Specks (Seatrout, Spotted) will take lures. When the water is warm the Black Drum (Drum, Black) and Puppy Drum will prefer bait. OFFSHORE – A handful of Bluefin as well as a good catch of Yellowfin and Blackfin (Tuna, Bluefin & Tuna, Yellowfin & Tuna, Blackfin) have been caught this week. They are all out at the stream and mixed up pretty well. Follow the Shrimp boats about 30-35 miles off the beach to find them. BAIT REPORT – The Shrimp are pretty far offshore, about 30-35 miles. INSHORE – As long as the water temperature remains warm the fish should continue to turn up. Puppy Drum (Drum, Red) and Drum (Drum, Black) will be running. Shrimp and Mullet are best to hook them. Fish bites are productive as well. You may find a sporadic Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Sea Mullet (Kingfish, Southern) bite turn up as well. When the water temperature is cooler the Trout will prefer lures. Sometimes they will move to the shallow water in 2-3 ft on sunny days in the afternoon. INSHORE – The weather has been up and down as of late however anglers are still finding a bit of everything. Bluefish, Sea Mullet (Kingfish, Southern), Drum (Drum, Red) and Gray Trout (Seatrout, Silver) are all hitting off the beach. Some Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) and Pompano (Pompano, Florida) have shown up but disappear when the weather is not ideal. On rainy days your best target is the Blues, Mullet and Drum. In the Sound there has been Cobia caught as well. OFFSHORE – Dolphin and Wahoo are the main focus offshore this week. Depending on the weather it has not been easy to make it out to the deep water however the bite is consistent when anglers have the chance to get out. INSHORE – In the Sound – Cobia out of Blair’s channel but not so much out of Wallace. The new restrictions have caused a little bit of headaches for Cobia fisherman but that hasn’t stopped anyone from catching fish. There’s been good trolling for Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) with spoons in the sound. Redfish got hit hard and seemed to have spread out. Gray Trout (Weakfish) have been caught in decent numbers but not many Specks (Seatrout, Spotted). Flounder (Flounder, Southern) are along the holes anywhere inside the inlet. From the surf there is Bluefish, Sea Mullet (Kingfish, Southern), Small Croakers (Croaker, Atlantic) and some Puppy (Red) Drum. Last week Drum (Drum, Black) were being caught off the beach. We are seeing a couple more Pompano (Pompano, Florida) show up. There was Cobia past the second sand bar being sight fished. There’s also Spanish jumping about half a mile out. You can’t really cast far enough from the beach to get the spanish but you can definitely get some Puppy Drum and Pompano. OFFSHORE – Towards the stream there’s a couple gaffer Mahi (Dolphin) along with a sporadic Wahoo bite. We are also getting reports of some Sails (Billfish – Sailfish) out there, too. Anglers are catching just about everything. OFFSHORE – The Mahi (Dolphin) have been hot around the stream so far this week. This has been the main target for most offshore anglers. BAIT REPORT – Menhaden are beginning to come back this week. Mullet can also be found. Tradewinds Tackle 252-928-5491 www.fishtradewinds.comMay 18, 2016

INSHORE – There is plenty of options when fishing inshore this week. We are seeing some great Sea Mullet (Kingfish, Southern & Kingfish, Northern) and Bluefish biting this week. They are consistent so far. A few puppy and over slot Drum (Drum, Red) are showing up as well. This has provided a great bite for anglers. Drum, Black, are a bit hit and miss this week however there are some short Flounder (Flounder, Southern) that are turning up. From the Sound we are seeing Gray Trout (Weakfish) and Bluefish. The sizes are decent and the bite is consistent when the weather allows anglers to get out. Things should heat up when the weather clears up and anglers can get out on boats. OFFSHORE – The action offshore is beginning to heat up for the season. Blackfin (Tuna, Blackfin), Wahoo, Tuna (Tuna, Albacore), and bottom fishing have all been hot. Anglers are anxiously awaiting the Cobia bite to come in a well. Tradewinds Tackle 252-928-5491 www.fishtradewinds.comApril 26, 2016

INSHORE – The point is producing some great Drum (Drum, Black) as of late. The Sea Mullet (Kingfish, Southern) are hot, it’s the best bite in years. Some huge Bluefish are also showing up. There are tons of Blow Toads (Puffer, Smooth) as well. We look forward to these results continuing into the weekend. OFFSHORE – There is quite a bit of action from the offshore this week. Blackfin (Tuna, Blackfin) have been consistently hitting in the deep water. We are also seeing a few White Marlin (Billfish – Marlin, White) begin to show up. This is a great sign of a summer bite. Wahoo have been scattered throughout the offshore however the bite has been great. Gaffer Dolphin are becoming a little more thick this week. We are seeing them close to the gulf stream roughly 18 miles off the shore. The Red Drum Tackle Shop, Inc. 252-995-5414 http://www.reddrumtackle.comApril 20, 2016

INSHORE – There has been some strong wind that has cooled things down but it has not slowed the fishing. Small Bluefish and Sea Mullet (Kingfish, Southern) are showing up. The Drum (Drum, Black) and Redfish (Drum, Red) are around but it has to be a bit nicer to find them. Everything will be on the beach. We just need some warmth in this area for a day or two. INSHORE – In the sound we are starting to see some big Drum (Drum, Black) and Puppy Drum (Drum, Red) in the area. There have also been reports of Bluefish coming in. Most anglers are bait fishing on the bottom. The weather and temperatures still have the acting fairly sluggish. OFFSHORE – We are seeing lots of Blackfins (Tuna, Blackfin) turning up this week. They have mostly been in the 200-300 ft range. It is almost time for the big Dolphin to move in as they should be showing up very soon. INSHORE – The weather is beginning to clear up in the area and anglers can finally make it on the water. We are beginning to see some small Blues (Bluefish) turning up around Hatteras this week. There are also reports of Blowtoads (Puffer, Smooth) and Flounder (Flounder, Southern) in the same area as well. A few Sea Mullet (Kingfish, Southern & Kingfish, Northern) have turned up however they are not on fire yet. The Drum (Drum, Black) and Sea Mullet have been in roughly the same situation. Generally they will take fresh or dead Shrimp. Similar artificials such as a Vudu Shrimp by Egret will be productive as well. Skates (Skate, Winter) are hitting from the Avon beach. We are also seeing some Drum turn up out of Frisco. Anglers heading to Buxton can expect to see a good Redfish (Drum, Red) bite around the point. INSHORE – This week, we’ve seen Bluefish along the beach, just over the last few days a good class of fish have been schooling around the Cape Lookout area. A few anglers even got into some topwater action plus others found action casting small metal lures like Jig Fish and Diamond Jigs. I’d say over the next week or so we should start to see the Blues pushing down toward the Beaufort Inlet. Sea Mullets (Kingfish, Southern) are still being caught in the Turning Basin area and back toward the Beaufort Inlet. The fish are still there but it’s just been hard to fish for them with the winds and currents. Unfortunately, both are making it hard to get the right drift to catch them but in the last few days we’ve seen some nice catches. Spec-Rigs tipped with Bait Shrimp and Fish Bites are getting the job done. Along with the mullets there’s been good numbers of Croakers in the mix and a few Hogfish starting to move in too. Gray Trout (Seatrout, Silver) fishing has been picking up over the last week. Beaufort Inlet area back toward the Turning Basin we’ve been seeing some nice fish. Last weekend, there was some even caught as far back as the AB High Rise Bridge. Spec Rigs tipped with Bait Shrimp and jigging Stingsilvers will be the ticket in catching the Grays. Black Drum (Drum, Black), Red Drum (Drum, Red) and Speckled Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are hanging in all of the creeks and the backwaters. The fish don’t seem to be everywhere but some nice catches have come by the shop. Nick, from the shop went out earlier this week and found a nice school of Redfish but had trouble getting them to eat. But, he didn’t have Live Mud Minnows on the boat, I’m sure that would have got the job done. There’s been good reports of Speckled Trout up in the Adams Creek area along with some of the creeks off Bogue Sound. The Black Drum seem to be hanging in the deeper creeks around docks, pitching Bait Shrimp under them and soaking it seems to be working the best. Piers / Surf: We’re now starting to see Sea Mullets making their way up the beaches. Both piers over the last week are reporting good catches of Mullets. Last week, the best bite seemed to be at night but this week anglers are seeing good action during the day. There’s still plenty of Pufferfish (Puffer, Smooth) being caught along the surf and off the piers. We saw some nice Black Drum caught around the Fort Macon area last weekend, along with a few off the piers. Bait Shrimp and Fish bites fished on the bottom will get you the best action. I’ve not heard of any Bluefish yet but with them showing up at Cape Lookout it won’t be long before anglers will be seeing action in the surf and on the piers. OFFSHORE – Wind and plenty of it, over the last week the only day boats could get out to the Bluewater was Easter Sunday and the majority found some fish. Wahoo, Blackfin (Tuna, Blackfin) and a few Yellowfin (Tuna, Yellowfin) were caught. The best area seems still to be the Swansboro Hole back up toward the Big Rock. We were hoping maybe this coming up weekend boats could get out but it looks like again the winds won’t let that happen. Also, bottom fishing was pretty good Easter Sunday with plenty of Bass, Triggerfish (Triggerfish, Gray) and Snappers (Snapper, Gray) being caught. So, let’s keep our fingers crossed once we move into April the winds will start to slack off so we can get out and take advantage of the good fishing. INSHORE – There have been some bigger Redfish (Drum, Red) tipping the scales. They are very large this week and the bite is consistent. There were also some really good Blowfish (Puffer, Smooth). Sea Mullet (Kingfish, Northern & Kingfish, Southern) are also swimming the same area. Bluefish are coming in up to 3 lbs. Things have been good this month and we expect a great Spring pattern. Shrimp has been the main bite for just about everything however the Redfish prefer Bunker this week. OFFSHORE – Tuna, Blackfin are huge this week up to 30 lbs. This is the main focus for anglers offshore this week when the weather allows everyone to get out. BAIT REPORT – There are some Bunker (Menhaden) swimming this week however with the wind it may be difficult to stock up on. INSHORE – There has been a steady Drum, Red bite. The sizes are varied so far and not consistent. A few Bluefish have shown up on the beach this week. Gotcha plugs and clark spoons are the main lures for anglers so far. Cut bait on the bottom has worked in murkier water. Mullet is always a great choice. We expect this to continue into the weekend. OFFSHORE – We expect to see some nice Mahi (Dolphin) and decent Wahoo this time of year. Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin & Tuna, Yellowfin) have also been hot. It will be difficult to keep lines in the water. INSHORE – There are some great Puppy Drum (Drum, Red) within slot size and even some bigger sizes. Everything else is a bit scattered due to the water temperatures. Puffers (Puffer, Smooth) are showing up along with Sea Mullet (Kingfish, Southern & Kingfish, Northern) and some 3 lb Bluefish as well. This is all from the Surf so far where most of the action is. The Sound is a bit later warming up traditionally but we are hearing a few Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) on Bunker and Mullet from the store. OFFSHORE – Offshore we are seeing some decent fish this week. Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin & Tuna, Blackfin & Tuna, Yellowfin) have been hot so far and the sizes are decent. We expect this to continue into the weekend. INSHORE – It has been cold in the sound so most angler are avoiding this area. The surf has seen some normal water with south west wind and anglers are seeing Drum (Drum, Black), Reds (Drum, Red) and a few Sea Mullet (Kingfish, Southern & Kingfish, Northern). Shrimp has been the best bait to throw this week however gulps with a paddle tail are working well for the Drum. Stop in and check out Red Drum Tackle Shop’s custom reels! OFFSHORE – Not too many people are heading offshore this week however some anglers are bringing back Tuna, Blackfin this week near Hatteras. They are holding up in deep water up to 300 ft this week. INSHORE – The main focus of anglers has been Puppy Drum (Drum, Red) in the surf. Just about everything is pushing out of the surf. There haven’t been many favorable days of weather for anglers to get out however they can catch some great Drum if they put their time in. When conditions improve anglers can always check out our Fish Guide with tons of great information to help improve the catch! OFFSHORE – A lot of wind and swells have kept most anglers off the water this week, especially offshore. Prior to the weather and during the breaks we are seeing some Tuna, Bluefin in some decent sizes. They can be found farther out at roughly 20-30 miles so far. INSHORE – There has been a lot of wind in this area lately. Prior to this there were some nice Drum, Black and Puppy Drum (Drum, Red) both in slot size. There are some bigger sizes turning up however with the turned up water they are more difficult to find at this point. A combination of Shrimp and frozen bait will work well. Fresh Bunker (Menhaden) is great to hook them as you can find them live this week. OFFSHORE – There has been a resurgence of big Tuna, Bluefin hitting recently. They died down for a while however the bite is beginning to heat back up. We hope to see this continue into the weekend if the weather dies down. Tuna, Blackfin should begin to improve soon when the Spring conditions set in BAIT REPORT – There are some Menhaden swimming in the sound this week. INSHORE – The inlets are holding some Puppy Drum (Drum, Red) this week. The nice days are producing the best bite. The Reds are not picky and will hit Shrimp, Mullet and Squid. Through the surf we are seeing some Specks (Seatrout, Spotted), Reds, Bluefish and even some Blow Toads (Puffer, Smooth) . They are all turning up at moderate sizes this week. OFFSHORE – The Kings (Mackerel, King) are continuing to bite this week. They are loving live Menhaden that matches the bait run. Anglers are still waiting for the Tuna, Bluefin to fire up but the bite should start to get hot any time now. BAIT REPORT – There are some extremely spotty pods of Mullet for inshore anglers looking for bait. Anyone going offshore should have no problem stocking up on Menhaden this week. INSHORE – The Sound has had a few fish swimming so far. Reports have come in of Puppy Drum (Drum, Red) that are knotted up in bunches. Once you find one, you will find a few. They have been hitting gold spoons. There has also been reports of Trout (Seatrout, Spotted & Seatrout, Silver) turning up along with some Flounder (Flounder, Southern & Flounder, Summer (Fluke)) and Bluefish. Leadhead curly tail jigs are working best for any of these. There is also a mixed bag of fish from the beach. Since the water temperature is not as cool as it usually is at this time of year there are quite a few different fish in the area. Drum are coming up in great sizes with Bluefish, Flounder, Sea Mullet (Kingfish, Southern) and Puffer, Smooth alongside. They are being caught in smaller sizes on bottom rigs however the larger sized Trout and Drum are hitting lures so far this week. OFFSHORE – Anyone heading offshore this week has been focusing on Mackerel, King. It has been off one day and really on the next as these fish are extremely hit and miss so far. Luckily anglers do not have to go too far off the beach to hook them as they are swimming pretty close. Stripped Bunker has produced the best results so far as it seems to be a fish favorite this week. BAIT REPORT – There are still Bunker (Menhaden) running on the beach this week. From the 20-30 mile range there are plentiful Tuna, Blackfin and some scattered Dolphin. Most anglers are trolling right now and are hooking the Dolphin while looking for the Tuna, so they’re biting pretty much anything the Tuna eats. BAIT REPORT – There are no reports of bait running at this time. Avon Fishing Report
OFFSHORE – It’s Wahoo season however there is nothing reported so far in this area.
INSHORE – After last week’s storm and flooding all ramps are open except 72. Southpoint is also open through 70 and the beach is open all the way down and the night time driving restriction has been lifted. All ramps should be open soon. Winds are looking to be around 25 to 30 knots. Bluefish and Spanish Mackerel have been good but are expected to leave after this next cold snap. There have been lots of Black Drum and Puppy Drum along with great Trout, Sea Mullet and Croaker in the surf. Mullet, both live and frozen have been working best for Drum. In the Sound we’ve been seeing big Drum staged on the inside of the inlet on the shoals. September and October has brought great Flounder and Croaker as they are in season.
BAIT REPORT – The beaches and have had a spotty Mullet run this past week.

OFFSHORE – There is still some Wahoo, Dolphin, and Sailfish action in the Gulf Stream, 8-20 miles out. The weather has been pretty windy, so it’s been hit or miss as far as being able to make the trip on account of the sea conditions.
INSHORE – Inshore has been pretty windy the past few days. It seems to have stirred up the big Drum. This week there was a 4 ½ pound Pompano caught in the surf. If you want to catch Pompano, they are hitting Sand Fleas and Shrimp. There are still a lot of Drum, Blues, and Flounder in the surf as well.
BAIT REPORT – Finger Mullet are great bait and there’s been a bunch around.

Avon Fishing Report
OFFSHORE – The Gulf stream has been producing some fish when the weather will let you out. Dolphin and Wahoo are willing to bite. The weedlines have been pretty scattered out there so you’ll have to do some searching.INSHORE – The Big Drum haven’t started their run yet; so there are still a lot of big 40 to 50 pound Drum Fish to catch from boats up in the sound and are being caught in the evening with live bait. The Drum will start their run probably in the next 2-3 weeks. The sound is also fishing well for Croaker, Trout, Flounder, with Pompano being found in the shallows. Finger Mullet have been thick on the outside of the sound, Bluefish are showing up in larger sizes and good numbers. They are still catching Sea Mullet and Flounder in the Surf as well. Again, with the Finger Mullet being fairly thick, any artificial that looks like one is going to be a good bet. Last week, they weighed in two large Citation Pompano.
BAIT REPORT – Finger Mullet have really moved in. They’re being found, and caught, all over the outer beaches and inlets. There’s also a good amount of Pinfish in the bay towards the outside as well.

OFFSHORE – The 18 to 20 mile run out to the Gulf Stream with some dark colored skirts and some Ballyhoo will put you on the Wahoo and a bit of Smaller Dolphin. Keep an eye out for the birds as the can be a great fish finder for you. The bottom fishing on the wrecks is producing quite the mix of fish. Grouper, Triggerfish, and Vermillion Snapper are among those taking bait on the structure.Anchorage Marina

INSHORE – Fishing from the surf right now is pretty good. There’s some usual summer time stuff happening. Pompano in the surf, short flounder, some mackerel. The mackerel are hitting spoons but for most fish right now you’ll want to throw finger mullet.BAIT REPORT – Bait are starting to run the beaches a little heavier. Finger Mullet is still quite easy to find. If you’re looking for bait fish, the sound is pretty loaded up with some baits around the inlets.

Avon Fishing Report
OFFSHORE – Anglers on the Gulf Stream found themselves having a great close to last week’s fishing before the fish turned off a bit through the weekend. When there are fish showing themselves out there it’s Wahoo and Dolphin and the weather should stabilise so that fishing conditions can improve again; that way everyone can get back to trolling skirted Ballyhoo in the blue water.INSHORE – Casting lures along the beach has been working well for catching Bluefish and Spanish Mackerel. Boats trolling clarkspoons are also have luck with the Spanish Mackerel. Some Pompano and and Trout are being found along the beaches as well.
SOUND – The Drum won’t start leaving the sound for quite some time yet. The Speckled Trout haven’t given up much to be talked about lately and the Flounder bite is on and off closer to shore.

OFFSHORE – The Wahoo bite has been pretty hot right now and there are some big ones out there. From Ocracoke you’ll only have to travel about 25 miles offshore. There’s been a lot of Mahi Mahi out there as well, although they have been small, some of the larger fish are starting to show up. Just about anything seems to be working once you find the fish, but Ballyhoo is still the best bait to use out there.INSHORE – The summer fishing trend continues again with multiple species being caught close to shore. There’s a lot of Pompano around, Sea Mullets, Bluefish, Flounder, Trout, and Puppy Drum are all being caught as well. Most anglers are finding that Shrimp, Squid, and cut bait are the way to catch the inshore fish. The boat fishing nearshore has seen people producing some pretty big Drum around evening/dusk. Trolling for Spanish Mackerel and Bluefish has been pretty consistent when pulling Clark Spoons and Drone Spoons. If you happen to come up on a school of Red Drum you can sometimes drop a jig in there and sight fish them.
BAIT REPORT – There’s shrimp around and they can be easily netted. Sometimes, you won’t always see shrimp, but you should still test the water as sometimes you can blindly pull out a few Shrimp.

Inshore-There’s a healthy dose of the usual suspect around here. Bluefish, Croaker, Puppy Drum, Flounder, Pompano. Armed with a healthy amount of Finger Mullet, you should have no problem bending a rod right now.Offshore- Are YOU fishing or running charters the waters around Ocracoke / Hatteras / Buxton / Avon and want to join the ProAngler team? Bait- Finger Mullet are starting to run, try castnetting them from shore. When they’re in heavy, it’s really easy to load up on them.

Hatteras / Buxton / Ocracoke / Avon Fishing Report
OFFSHORE – Our friends over at Tradewinds Tackle were reporting that the Dolphin and Amberjack fishing has begun. You don’t even have to go too far out to find them, but the Dolphin are usually drawn to the weedlines which are blown around. You are going to want to troll Ballyhoo or blue and white lures for them. You don’t have to go far out at all to hit the Barracuda either. You want to drop cut bait for them because they are a predatory fish.INSHORE – We have the summertime mixed bag inshore right now. On the beach there are small Bluefish, Sea Mullet, Croaker, Puppy Drum, Pompano, and a few Flounder. If you have a boat but don’t plan on going too far you can catch bigger Bluefish, Spanish mackerel, and a few Cobia. The Cobia prefer live bait if you can get it. The largest Drum have been caught in the evening and at night. Generally, the Puppy Drum remains scattered. There are some keeper Flounder in the inlet. For bait, you are going to want to catch most everything on a combination of Mullet, Shrimp, and Squid. Make sure that you are carrying the right kinds of bait in case you stumble upon a nice school.
BAIT REPORT – There is Mullet around, but finding baitfish can be difficult, especially if it gets too hot. Remember, Mullet are vegetarian and if you plan on using a Sabiki Rig then don’t bait the hooks with cut bait.

Hatteras / Buxton / Avon / Ocracoke Fishing Report
OFFSHORE – Our friends over at Anchorage Marina has heard that the offshore fishing for Mahi has been good. THere are not too many gaffers, but that is normal for this time of year. If you are interested in big offshore fish there has been some good size Wahoo and Yellowfin Tuna. For all of those fish you are going to want to be trolling, of course. If you decide that you would rather go bottom fishing, then take yourself to a reef, wreck, or find a rock pile and throw down some live bait. Be warned the bottom fishing is a little bit slow right now but people have been catching Triggerfish and Amberjacks. INSHORE – Tradewinds Tackle reports that the typical summer stuff is biting. Fishing is good and expect to find a little bit of everything out there. Mostly, you will be catching Sea Mullet, GRey Trout, and Bluefish. Outside of that, you are going to find your Flounder, Red Drum, and Black Drum. For bait you are going to want to take Shrimp, Sand Fleas, or Finger Mullet. Some people advocate ferociously for fishing one tide over the other, but really the best time for you to fish is when you can. Just remember that it is really shallow – a lot of fishermen will go out onto the beach at low tide, scout out where the good holes are, and then come back at high tide. If you are going to be in the nearshore range trolling, target the Spanish Mackerel and Blues. BAIT REPORT – Bait is around, you can dig up sand fleas, catch Finger Mullet, and occasionally find Pogies.Remember, Mullet are vegetarian so if you want to catch them, find a school, and throw down a sabiki with bright hooks – don’t bother baiting them. Hatteras / Buxton / Avon / Ocracoke Fishing Report
OFFSHORE – Our friends over at Anchorage Marina haven’t heard anything too different from what they were hearing last weekend. Offshore fishing is still really good with plenty of Tuna, and Dolphin. There are also some Wahoo out there. If you are trolling for the Dolphin and Wahoo then you are going to want to use Ballyhoo. There have been some real nice King Mackerel in the 25 pound range caught as well. The best place to fish is at the Gulf Stream break about 25 miles out. We haven’t heard much about bottom fishing because the trolling at the Gulf is so good right now.INSHORE – Ken over at Tradewind Tackle can confirm that the fishing is also good inshore right now. There is a mixed bag in the surf; lots of Pompano, Sea Mullet, Flounder, Grey Trout, and Bluefish. There are also some puppy drum being caught. There are cobia around, so keep your wits about you and be ready if something huge decides to take off with your bait. For the Bluefish and Drum you want to be using cut bait, but for pretty much anything else you want to stick with Shrimp and Squid.
BAIT REPORT – There are some menhaden around. Some of the finger mullet are also starting to appear. This means the fishing inshore is likely to stay good as long as the bait is here.

Hatteras / Buxton / Ocracoke / Avon Fishing Report
OFFSHORE – There are some Dolphin out there and quite a few gaffers. Jimmy over at Tradewinds Tackle has seen a few Wahoo on the troll as well. You want to be trolling Ballyhoo for most of the offshore catch. The bottom fishing is also good out there if the weather is calm. The occasional Snapper is down there but you are more likely to come up with Grouper, Triggerfish, Sea Bass, and Amberjack. The go to bait for them right now is to drop Squid or cut Bonitas down to the bottom.INSHORE – Off the surf everything is possible right now. No one thing is biting like crazy but Jimmy has seen some people catching Pompano, and a few little grey Trout. There are also Bluefish and Flounder around and if you plan on using bigger baits there are Sharks and Stingrays. There is Black Drum right now, but no Reds to be seen. The Black Drum and Sheepshead are towards the north end of the beach right now. Fish the breaks in the sand bar, and the shells on the beach. There are man made rocks by the north end of the ferry on the inside of the sound that are good fishing.
BAIT REPORT – Bait is definitely around right now and if you’re good with a net try around the canals for the finger mullet. There are also Menhaden if you have a real big net and the inclination.

Hateras / Buxton / Avon Fishing Report
OFFSHORE – July is the month of White Marlin. You’ll want to troll for them with the same kinds of lures you’d use for Dolphin. Try bubblers with drones, and different kids of attractors. As always there are Dolphin around and some Wahoo being caught. If you’re more interested in Bottom fishing you’ll be catching Triggerfish, Red Snapper and Amberjacks. The Cobia have moved through and out now so there aren’t many around now. The big drum have now made their way into the sound.INSHORE – Near surf you can catch Pompano, Bluefish, Sea Mullet, Flounder, Croaker, and Speckled Trout. There is always a chance of coming up with a puppy Drum or some small Sharks or Rays. If you are targeting the Pompano try a Shrimp or Sand Flea. You can even dig some sand fleas on your own. Squid is also a great bait. Ken at Tradewinds Tackle sells fresh Menhaden and Mullet Bluefish and puppy Drum. Try jigging Gulp, swing silver, cast master, or any other flashy metal that you can find.
BAIT REPORT – Menhaden in the sound if you know where to look for them. You can cast net them. There are some commercial fishermen do that though, so their spots are top secret. You’ll also be able to dig up your own Sand Fleas.

Hateras / Ocracoke / Avon Fishing Report
OFFSHORE – Fishing is really good right now! There are a lot of Dolphin and Wahoo out there. You’ll want to troll with frozen Ballyhoo for the Dolphin. If you want to to bottom fish the Triggerfish are also on fire. There are also some nice Gaffer and smaller Peanuts out there. Try spending some time at the wrecks if you want to find some Amberjack. You can use whatever you can catch as bait for the Amberjacks. There are lots of Pinfish around.INSHORE – Try Surf fishing for Sea Mullet and Grey Trout. The water is getting warmer so a lot of the fishing are on the move in search of colder water. The Flounder have started showing up as well as the Pompano and Spanish Mackerel. You’ll want to use fresh bait when you can. Fresh Fatback is hot right now. For Cobia and Drum fishing there cutbait and Shrimp are your best bet.
BAIT REPORT – Sabiki up some Pinfish are Pogies. Both are plentiful in the area.

OFFSHORE – When offshore trolling you’ll find Mahi Mahi, Yellowfin, Tuna some Wahoo, and some Blackfin. Trolling frozen Ballyhoo and artificials has particularly effective. When bottom fishing use cut bait of any variety to catch Trigger, Black Sea Bass, Vermillion Snappers, and Amberjack.INSHORE – Out in the inlet you’ll find Spanish Mackerel and Trout. For these fish you’re going to want to use spoons, or a bottom rig.
BAIT FISH – There are tons of Menhaden around. Use a sabiki or cast net and you should have bait fish for the rest of the day.
