Avon-By-The Sea/Asbury Park/Loch Arbour Fishing Report

INSHORE – Striped Bass (Bass, Striped) are running along the shore. Winter Flounder (Flounder, Southern) can be caught in the river. Both bait and lures are working well to hook them. It seems to be more of a day to day preference. To the North Bloodworms, Sandworms and Clams are working well to hook them. INSHORE – Anglers are Flounder (Flounder, Winter) fishing in the Shark River and Barnegat Bay. Trout are opening soon. Porgy (Scup), Cod (Cod, Atlantic) and Ling (Hake) have been caught on the party boats. Bass (Bass, Striped) are to the South towards Tom’s River. Generally they begin biting in the canal and we should see this fire up any day. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report to reveal more angling tips and tricks!

Avon-By-The Sea/Asbury Park/Loch Arbour Fishing Report

INSHORE – During the Winter season the migratory fish have left the area and the variety of fish available in State waters are slim. Some anglers are still targeting Stripers (Bass, Striped), Tautog, Cod, Atlantic and other fish that are around over the winter. Most Striper trips will start back up around April or sooner. There are still a few of the big boats running Tautog trips when the weather allows. Any of our listed tackle shops would be glad to steer you in the direction of a boat that’s still sailing. As we find varying weather conditions from day to day we encourage all anglers to stay safe and warm when fishing. This is a great opportunity to check out some of the current Pro Angler App features along with new additions coming soon! We look forward to bringing you more great Pro Reports when the bite fires back up!

Avon-By-The Sea/Asbury Park/Loch Arbour Fishing Report

INSHORE – The boats are mainly fishing for Blackfish (Tautog). Some anglers are finding easy limits with fish to 7 lbs. It’s all weather dependent from day to day. Crabs are working well to hook them. There hasn’t been much from Stripers (Bass, Striped) on the surf. Point Pleasant around the inlet using small bucktails were key. Teasers in front of SP Minnows or Mambo Minnows is a good alternative. Fish up to 25 inches have been caught. Check out the 3 Night Rod Building Class from Feb 6, 8 & 10 from 7-9. Call Brielle Bait and Tackle for details!

OFFSHORE – Anglers will attempt Hake and Cod (Cod, Atlantic) fishing soon. Mackerel (Mackerel, Atlantic), Porgy (Scup) and Pollock will be targeted around Belmar and Point Pleasant as well.

Avon-By-The Sea/Asbury Park/Loch Arbour Fishing Report

INSHORE – Anglers are still picking away at Bass (Bass, Striped). They are mainly shorts but there are still some keepers around. Fish are anywhere from Monmouth Beach in Sea Bright to Island Beach State Park. Some are still taking topwaters. Search for birds and bait to find them. Trolling is still productive using Umbrella rigs with Shad on them. They are anywhere from 100 yards off the beach to the state line. It depends on the day. We expect to see both bite and the baits continue to be productive into the holiday week. We look forward to more reports in the New Year! PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report to reveal more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – Wrecks from 50-80 miles offshore are producing really good Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black). The bite improves as the water gets colder. The best fishing is right before New Years as limits are the norm. Clams are working well for bait. Big Porgy are even mixed in. Blackfish (Tautog) are great from 40 ft to 70ft. Anglers are doing a number on the fish. Limits are easy and the fish are big. Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) have been caught between 50-100 lbs. You can cast plugs at them. We expect to see both bite and the baits continue to be productive into the holiday week. We look forward to more reports in the New Year!

BAIT REPORT – Herring and Sandeels are pushing through. Bay Anchovy can also be found.

Avon-By-The Sea/Asbury Park/Loch Arbour Fishing Report

INSHORE – Surf anglers are doing very well all hours of the day and into the night. A majority of the fish are only up to 22 inches taking Eels. Out front anglers are finding a decent Bass bite on the troll from Lavallette to Beach State Park using tubes on Umbrella Rigs. The bite is getting better for Tautog on jigs or bait rigs. Anglers fishing to the North are doing better in 65-70 ft of water around Long Branch. Check out the great sales on Plugs this week at Fishermen’s Supply Co! PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report to reveal more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are biting from 60 – 80 miles out. If you can time a weather window, it’s definitely worth the run.

Avon-By-The Sea/Asbury Park/Loch Arbour Fishing Report

INSHORE – From the shore, surf fishing was hot until recently. Some Bass (Bass, Striped) have been caught from Sea Grit to Bayhead (right in the inlet). The best shore bite is in the morning until the sun gets up, then the boats are doing better. Rubber Shad, Poppers and Snagging Bunker are best for the boats. Smaller boats are targeting Blackfish (Tautog) on the nearshore wrecks. The bite is decent and the sizes are up to about 6 lbs. Take advantage before they reduce the limit again. Rod Building Classes are beginning this Winter! Stay tuned for details! PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report to reveal more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – Anglers are targeting Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) and Porgy (Scup) about 40-50 miles out. Bottom fishing is the game out here as the trolling fish have been scarce. When the weather is good and anglers can get out the bite is great. The water is fairly unpressured.

BAIT REPORT – A lot of Peanut and regular Bunker (Menhaden) are still swimming the coast.

Avon-By-The Sea/Asbury Park/Loch Arbour Fishing Report

INSHORE – Bass (Bass, Striped) fishing has been great this week. They are turning up on the beach and from the boats. Boats are snagging and dropping with Bunker or trolling Spoons and Mojos. They are getting them from the bar to 3 miles by finding the birds and bait. The fish on the beach are feeding on Peanut Bunker or smaller rubber shads, swimmers and poppers. The better tides are in the mornings and evenings however in the afternoons they are pushing on the beach here and there. You just have to be at the right place at the right time. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report to reveal more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are being caught around the Shark River Reef area. There have been a few keepers taken and quite a few shorts. Porgy (Scup) have also turned up. They are decent sizes so far. Clams are catching both from the bottom. Big Winter Flounder (Flounder, Winter) are moving in. Anglers seem to be heading out in the afternoons for them.

BAIT REPORT – There are plenty of Bunker (Menhaden) around. Peanuts are on the beach.

INSHORE – Blackfish (Tautog) are great in the canal and the Manasquan Inlet at the rocks. Stripers (Bass, Striped) were biting recently on Point Pleasant Beach between Bay Head and Lavalette. Boaters are doing well and anglers are still catching a few fish from the surf. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report to reveal more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – The boats are doing well on Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black). They are heading farther out to find the better fish in roughly 70 ft. The Tuna trips are wrapping up at this point for several of the charter fleets. Anglers are having to spend either a full day or overnight trip fishing for them.

BAIT REPORT – There are lots of Bunker (Menhaden) on the beach.

Avon-By-The Sea/Asbury Park/Loch Arbour Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Bass (Bass, Striped) bite is in full swing. Lots of fish are being taken from Sandy Hook to Barnegat Inlet. The best fishing is South of Manasquan Inlet to Barnegat inlet. Anglers are snagging and dropping live bait or trolling in 30-60 ft of water for fish. Most of the trolling has been done with Bunker Spoons or Mojos. The morning bite has been consistent however anglers are still catching fish in the afternoon as well. Blackfish (Tautog) is really good however the season isn’t open yet other than 1 fish per person. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are good in shallow areas about 30-40 ft of water. In 60-80 ft we are seeing better quality of fish. Anglers are using Clams or Diamond Jigs. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report to reveal more angling tips and tricks!

INSHORE – Stripers (Bass, Striped) have been in the surf the past few days chasing the bait. They are up to 35 inches. Manasquan and North have been holding great fish. Boaters have been hitting Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) on wrecks and reefs from 0-12 miles. There are some nice sizes coming up on Squid Strips and Clams. The Blackfish (Tautog) bite is consistent. OFFSHORE – Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin) are way out at the Hudson Canyon. Dolphin are turning up well too. The trips are hit or miss as far as numbers, but everyone is getting a few. INSHORE – The weather has been a bit unfavorable in this area as of late. Blackfish (Tautog) are the main target. They are holding up on the rocks. They are still quite small, you’ll have to fish through a lot to find a keeper. The numbers are great though, especially from shore. Green Crabs are working well. White Legger Crabs will be productive later in the season as most anglers wait for the Tog limit to increase before paying the extra for them. The water is still too warm for Winter Flounder. Stripers (Bass, Striped) are beginning to show up. Small Bluefish are doing well. It’s definitely a transition season. Some boats are hitting Porgy (Scup) and Ling (Hake). INSHORE – Plenty of False Albacore (Bonito, Little Tunny) can be found in the Mudhole on the troll or on the lumps inshore using spinning gear. Quite a few Bluefish are up to 3 lbs swimming around. Fluke [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)] are fair and schooling up as they move offshore. If you find a school they are good but otherwise the bite is slow. Anglers are using jigs to find them. Porgy (Scup) are fantastic. Most of the fishing is around the rocks and Sandy Hook reef. They are 2-3 lbs and limits don’t seem to be an issue. Stripers (Bass, Striped) are picking up in the river. Poppers, small jigs and small plugs will get them around the banks. In Shark River and Manasquan River the bite is best. Incoming tide is better than outgoing for the most part. The night outgoing is sometimes productive as well. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below the report to reveal more angling tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – Yellowfin (Tuna, Yellowfin) are here and there but not consistent. Mahi (Dolphin) are good but they are about 90 miles out. OFFSHORE – The bite is doing great in this area lately. There are still reports of Tuna, Bluefin and Tuna, Bigeye in the canyons. They are quick and following the schools of baitfish moving this week. There are Bluefin in the nearshore as well swimming close within 3-12 miles of shore. Anglers have been throwing a plug in front of them. In the deeper water they have been catching them on the chunk. Sea Bass, Black and Porgy are also holding up on the offshore wrecks located anywhere from 40-70 miles out. Dropping clams seems to be the best way to catch them this week.

BAIT REPORT – There are tons of bait running this week providing no shortage for anglers. Herring, Bunker (Menhaden), Sardines and Sand Eels are all swimming and the fish are already following them.

Avon-By-The Sea/Asbury Park/Loch Arbour Fishing Report

INSHORE – Blackfish (Tautog) are the target this week for most inshore anglers. They are coming up on the outside and into the canals. Typically, Green Crabs are the most productive bait to hook them. There have also been some good sizes of Flounder (Flounder, Winter) turning up in the river this week. Some have been reported up to 4 lbs. The Bass (Bass, Striped) bite has been spotty here. Anglers find themselves having to cover a lot of ground to locate any. Last week they were just off the beach but have begun to move elsewhere.

OFFSHORE – There is no longer any signs of Tuna this week however most anglers are turning their focus over to the Sea Bass, Black. They are hot this week in the offshore coming up in decent numbers and sizes. Anglers are using Porgy to catch them and having no trouble at all. Porgy are also swimming the offshore coming up in gigantic sizes.

BAIT REPORT – So far this week there has not been any bait reported in the water.

Avon-By-The Sea/Asbury Park/Loch Arbour Fishing Report

INSHORE – The fishing in this area has been great for this time of year. There has been a fantastic Striper (Bass, Striped) bite over the weekend and continuing into the week. They have been on and just off the beach so anglers are trolling, jigging and snagging Bunker for them. Some are coming up in smaller sizes however they are on fire and no one is complaining. There are still some Blackfish (Tautog) in the Point Pleasant Canal and beginning to show up on the outside. As always, they are loving Green Crabs. Sea Bass, Black and gigantic Porgy have been found in the nearshore wrecks this week along with a few decent sized Cod, Tommy. Sea Bass closes January 1st but Stripers will remain open within 3 miles. The weather in this area is expected to remain great for the rest of the week and into the next.

OFFSHORE – The Canyon has some Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin & Tuna, Albacore) out there when the boats can go. There may be just a couple more outing this year. Despite the weather fish are still there for anglers venturing out. There’s been some really successful charters pulling 50-150 fish per trip.

BAIT REPORT – Bunker (Menhaden) are swimming with Rainfish and Spearing and are plentiful. Live bait should not be difficult to find this week.

Avon-By-The Sea/Asbury Park/Loch Arbour Fishing Report

INSHORE – Stripers (Bass, Striped) are doing much better this week now that the wind has died down. Artificials are the best bet this week along with Bunker (Menhaden). They can be found along the beach at 50-60 ft of water. Blackfish (Tautog) are also hitting limits on Green Crabs. Anglers are having a hard time keeping their hook in the water. Flounder, Winter are catching in the river and anglers are allowed to keep 2. Clams are working very well to hook them this week. Sundial fish have been showing up as well which there are currently no limits on.

OFFSHORE – There have been no boats out at the canyons this week and no reports from the offshore areas have come in so far. For anglers that decide to head out over the holidays they can always consult our Tips feature which provides additional information and suggestions that might help improve the catch. They can also stop into Fisherman’s Den for a great up to the minute fishing report.

BAIT REPORT – There are tons of Bunker (Menhaden) swimming in the deeper water this week.

Avon-By-The Sea/Asbury Park/Loch Arbour Fishing Report

INSHORE – Anglers are finding a solid Bass, Striped bite along the beach in 50-60 ft of water depending on the weather. Trolling Bunker spoons has been the most effective set up this week. The surf is also host to some Bass as well that are hitting Clams or plugs as an artificial alternative. Blackfish (Tautog) opened this week so anglers are stocking up on Green Crab. They have been turning up inshore and only a couple miles from the beach on wrecks and rock piles. There have been no reports from the backwater and inlets as there’s not much in season to fish in the backwater.

BAIT REPORT – There are still some Mullet running however they have become spotty at this point.

Avon-By-The Sea/Asbury Park/Loch Arbour Fishing Report

INSHORE – Anglers are still reporting lots of good sized Bass, Striped. Not too many anglers are returning home empty handed. Some fishermen are jigging or snagging and dropping depending on the boat traffic however a majority are trolling for fish. Anywhere from the rocks, to Red Church area to Spring lake. There are some Bluefish mixed in with the Bass as well. Surf fishermen are seeing spotty results but improvement in the dark using SP Minnow. Purple and black are the best colors. The inlets are also providing spotty results but still contain fish.

OFFSHORE – The Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin & Tuna, Longfin) bite continues out in the canyon. They are mainly hitting bait but anglers could likely still jig for them. Butterfish and Sardines are working well for both Tuna species.

BAIT REPORT – There are some Menhaden running right now as well as some rain fish and Sand eels.
