Assateague State Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – Although the bite hasn’t quite fired back up anglers are beginnning to target Striped Bass around points and bridges as they make their way in. During the Winter season most the migratory fish have left the area and the variety of fish available in State waters are slim. Some anglers are still targeting Tautog offshore and Stripers (Bass, Striped) inshore. There are not many boats left on the water over winter but the local tackle shops can always point you in the right direction if you are looking to get offshore this Winter. As we find varying weather conditions from day to day we encourage all anglers to stay safe and warm when fishing. This is a great opportunity to check out some of the current Pro Angler App features along with new additions coming soon. We look forward to bringing you more great Pro Reports when the bite fires back up.

INSHORE – Small Stripers (Bass, Striped) have been running the bridges this week. They are preferring artificials in White. There hasn’t been any word on Bluefish running the beach, Baitfish are quiet as well however once they move in the Bluefish shouldn’t be far behind.

INSHORE – Rockfish (Bass, Striped) are pretty much gone at this point. Tautog can still be caught. The more prominent bite is coming from Delaware in the deeper water. Once the Spring bite arrives things should fire back up. We expect this to happen in March. Live bait will be more available here in spring for the Tautog. Most anglers hit the Tog pretty heavy until the Flounder show up.

Assateague State Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – There are some Stripers and deep White Perch in the bay. The Bay Bridge Pilings are key in 30-40 ft of water for both fish along the rock pilings and the main pilings. 6-10 inch KBs on a 3 /4 to 2 oz jighead are your best bet for Stripers. The Power Plant to the South is also holding Stripers in the warm water discharge. We are seeing Trout mixed in. Around Annapolis there are decent fish in shallow water. There aren’t many numbers but there are still some good fish. Point Lookout is one of the best areas in the state, right around the border. Puppy Drum, Stripers and Trout are all swimming there. Search shallow water to 40 ft. Use small bucktails as close as 10 ft of water. On the Flats by the Chesapeake Canal mouth there are decent sized fish where the canal opens up to the bay. Stripers (Bass, Striped) there are up to 36 inches. Oceanside anglers are going to the Route 50 bridge to jig for Bluefish and Rockfish. Most are small to 25 inches. Some anglers are plugging around Ocean City and Assateague. They are mostly schoolies there too.

BAIT REPORT – Shad (Hickory Shad) are moving through the beach. They are moving with Peanut Bunker (Menhaden).

Assateague State Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – Bass (Bass, Striped) continue to provide a scattered bite for anglers from the surf and trolling. The troll is a bit more productive however the fish are farther out towards the line. Generally soft plastics on the bottom will work well to hook them. Anglers are eager for the Tautog bite to reopen on January 1st!

INSHORE – Things are a bit slow in locally. A few small Stripers (Bass, Striped) have been picked up on the troll. They are still scattered. Most of the keeper fish are outside the line. Very few are coming off the surf. The water temperatures are dropping and the fish are farther out. We don’t expect to see much change into next week.

Assateague State Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – Things are a bit slow which is typical for this time of year. Anglers are jigging around the bay bridge for Rockfish (Bass, Striped). Fish up to 50 inches have been caught. Jigging soft plastics on jigheads has been most productive. The numbers are decent. There are still big Stripers out there if you’re willing to bundle up and brave the cold. There has been some anglers fishing out of Point Lookout taking in some Bass to 30 inches. They are decent sizes and make good table fair. We are seeing them down to Smith Island and Tangiers. The whole area is still fairly productive. There are still big fish on their way down from Jersey as well. The fish are deep and the big switch will be soon with the colder weather. Anglers will focus on the power plants with a good supply of warm water pumping out. The Choptank river is producing fish deep water jigging as well. Topwater stuff is done. Bucktails with plastics, alone or jigging with soft plastics is best. Stripers are closed as of December 15th. Most anglers will cast light tackle after the closure for some catch and release fun. Oceanside, some anglers are trolling off the beach for a handful of fish. The farther North you go, the better they get. Not much is coming from the beaches of Ocean City. In this area you can troll inside the 3 mile line to catch fish. At this point we see a lot of anglers switching to Freshwater and tributaries feeding into the bay.

Assateague State Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – We are halfway through a Rockfish (Bass, Striped) Tournament here however the fish are mostly still to the North just outside of Indian River Inlet. The wind has also kept a lot of anglers off the water. There are some nice fish to be caught to the North. From the beach and bay area the resident shorts are turning up. Through the inlet and around the route 50 bridge there are good numbers of fish, however no Bluefish to be found. The Specks (Seatrout, Spotted) have also disappeared.

BAIT REPORT – We haven’t seen a lot of bait moving through.

Assateague State Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – Small Rockfish (Bass, Striped) continue to turn up locally. Anglers are heading to the inlet at Ocean City to find them. Finger Mullet or Bunker has been working well to hook them. Fish Bites and Gulp are great alternatives.

Assateague State Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – It’s been pretty slow lately. Inshore there are a few keeper Tautog, but they are mainly shorts. Green Crabs or White Legged Crab and Sand Fleas are your best bet to hook them. Anglers are fishing the jetties and bridges for a few keeper Stripers (Bass, Striped). Tsunami Swim Shads are working well to hook them. Lunker City Finesse Shad is a great alternative. Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) are swimming the wrecks. The bite is hit or miss. The surf is quiet.

BAIT REPORT – There are a few Gannets around occasionally working the water but there hasn’t been much bait under them.

INSHORE – Puppy Drum (Drum, Red) and small Stripers (Bass, Striped) are biting on the bridge and rocks. Tautog are biting on the rocks as well. Jerk Shads, Spec Rigs and Curly Tails are all working to hook Drum and Stripers. We are still waiting for the bigger fish to move in.

Assateague State Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – The wrecks are doing well for a mix of fish this week. Tautog and Stripers (Bass, Striped) have been caught. The Stripers are still mostly shorts, especially on the beach. Some keepers have turned up around the bridge. They can be caught jigging with soft plastics. Rattle Traps are also productive. The night bite seem to be producing better than the day bite. Reds (Drum, Red) are still hanging around the bridges. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) have been caught as well with a few Drum (Drum, Black) around structure. Alltackle.com Ocean City 410-213-2840 www.Alltackle.com https://proangler.us/capt/AllTackleMD.jpg

OFFSHORE – Recently anglers have been targeting Sea Bass (Sea Bass, Black) and Tilefish (Tilefish, Blueline). They are swimming the wrecks. Most anglers are targeting the inshore Rockfish (Bass, Striped) bite at this point. Farther out there may be some Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin) but it’s difficult to say between weather and the inshore focus. Assateague State Park Fishing Report

INSHORE – We are seeing resident Stripers being caught this week. There have also been catches of Tog and Summer Flounder [Flounder, Summer (Fluke)]. The temperature hasn’t dropped much as of yet. The Flounder can be found on the inside through the East channel around the bridge. Anglers are dropping under the bridge and off the side wall at 5th Street. Gulp has been working well to hook them. Tautog are on rock piles as usual. Generally Green Crabs are best. Stripers (Bass, Striped) prefer Gotcha Plugs with a leadhead and rubber tail in white. Everyone is casting, no one is trolling.
