Key West Fishing Report

INSHORE – There hasn’t really been anything out of the ordinary going on inshore throughout the Keys, that being said there is plenty of action to take advantage of. Seatrout are swimming the mangrove shorelines and can be easily caught in these areas. Key Largo in particular is always holding fish. Tarpon can be found as they make their way in. They are a bit hit or miss throughout the Keys as they haven’t arrived in some areas, or the weather has pushed them out. Searching flats and bridges with live bait will help you find them. Snapper may also be holding up on these structures. As usual, you can almost always find Bonefish and Permit hanging around. They aren’t very affected by the weather so heading out with Shrimp and Crabs when all else fails should give you a few fish.

OFFSHORE – The Keys has been the place to be this week. We are seeing a good variety of fish being landed. Both the numbers and sizes are great! Tuna have been one of the main focuses for anglers into this week. We are seeing plenty of Blackfin being hooked on feathers in colors like blue/white. Live bait is working as well. As we move towards Marathon, we are seeing better numbers and with the stream being so close in the Big Pine area anglers don’t even have to go very far to find them. Sailfish are another target for anyone heading offshore. Live bait has been the key to hooking them on the wrecks and reefs, especially around Islamorada. Dolphin and Wahoo have been caught in the mix as well. On the bottom the Snapper and Grouper always seem to be available on the reefs. Yellowtail in particular are in great sizes up to 6 pounds. Muttons have also been caught, but if you are targeting them you may have to be prepared to head farther out. Keep in mind, Grouper are catch and release in some areas, so check your Pro Angler App to determine what is legal to harvest.

INSHORE – The bridges are fishing well with small Live Target finger Mullets for big Grays (Snapper, Gray) and Jacks (Jack, Crevalle). They are biting well in the morning. Snook (Snook, Common) were following our baits however they weren’t feeding. Pilchards are a great live bait choice. The flats around the back are holding Bonefish, Permit and Tarpon that are slowly moving into the bridges. Search the mangroves for Snook as well.

OFFSHORE – The reefs are holding plenty of Snapper (Snapper, Gray & Snapper, Yellowtail & Snapper, Mutton) this week. Kings (Mackerel, King) continue to push through however they are a bit scattered. You can find them in roughly 70 feet of water. Out of Marathon, there are good numbers of schoolie Dolphin that we hope to see move in soon. The Blackfin (Tuna, Blackfin) continue to show up at sunset.

BAIT REPORT – Pilchards and Pinfish are around on the flats.

Key West Fishing Report

INSHORE – Fishing has been a bit tough in the area as of late, but don’t let that deter you from hitting the water. Permit, Bonefish, and Tarpon have been caught in the back and on the flats. In the deeper water areas there has been Mangroves on structured bottom. If you are targeting them, head out with live or dead Shrimp for the best catch.

OFFSHORE – This has been the time to head offshore and fish! Everything seems to be actively biting this week. Starting with Kings and Wahoo, we are finding them in the same depths this week. Unsurprisingly, they are both being caught on the troll and can be taken using Cigar Minnows or Ballyhoo on a 3 hook Kingfish rig. The trick to catching them is having different suspending depths of your bait, as they prefer to swim a bit more scattered out. There are some Bonito mixed in towards Key West.
Tuna are also a solid target to go after this week. Fishing from 150 to 300 feet of water, or alternatively heading to the Humps in Marathon has been successful. Bluefin have also been sighted as they were migrating through however they don’t seem to be feeding.
Dolphin and Sailfish are a bit scattered from Key Largo to Key West. Sails are more on the reefs while the Dolphin prefer the debris. Snapper, as usual can be caught on the bottom.

Key West Fishing Report

INSHORE – The inshore bite is a bit limited however determined anglers are finding some decent fish. The reliable Jack Crevalle and Barracuda can almost always be found, and are particularly thick around the bridges in Big Pine. Of course, we can’t forget about Ladyfish, Permit and Cero Mackerel that never seem to want to shut down. Nearshore structure is holding Snapper from Key Largo to Key West. Fish the outgoing tide for an active bite.
If you can find a chance to head out to some of the islands the Snook bite has been decent. If the weather is too rough you can also find them in the backcountry, but they won’t be as sizeable. Keep an eye out for Sharks too. If you’re not targeting them, you won’t want to lose your bait to them.

OFFSHORE – What a variety of fish we are seeing offshore this week! From Cobia to Amberjack to Marlin you never know what you’ll be reeling in until it breaks the water! Sailfish are providing a good day bite for anglers from Islamorada to Marathon. The recent wind will aid in kite fishing for them. There are many other scattered species including Dolphin, Wahoo, Tuna and White Marlin turning up as well. As we move towards Key West there were also a few Blue Marlin hooked this week and some Swordfish.
The bottom bite is almost always a good bet for anglers fishing offshore. Snapper are holding up on most of the reefs along with Hawk Channel in Marathon. Don’t be surprised if you reel in a Hogfish or catch and release Grouper with them as well. Amberjack have also been mixed in. Despite the wind anglers have had a great week full of surprises.

Key West Fishing Report

INSHORE – The wind early in the week moved a lot of the Tarpon out. They are moving back in although don’t seem to be feeding very heavily. If you plan to fish Bahia Honda make sure to bring some Hogy Plastics or Blue Crab. There has been lots of small Tarpon out of Islamorada and a decent morning bite from Key West. Flats fishing was pretty awful to start the week. Some calm afternoons have allowed Bonefish and Permit anglers to get on on the flats and catch fish with live bait. Redfish have also been on the flats and into the bushes, Snook have been mixed in near Islamorada.

OFFSHORE – There is lots of fish to be caught in the Florida Keys, the ‘reel’ challenge has been navigating the wind which is finally letting up. Reef fishing has been productive out of Key West and Big Pine Key for a healthy mix of Snapper. Amberjack and Almaco Jacks fish best out of Big Pine. If you are looking for King Mackerel we recommend heading all the way to Key West. Sailfish numbers have been fishable out of Key West, here and there out of Big Pine. While Trolling Ballyhoo anglers can expect some Mahi as well off of Big Pine. There hasn’t been a lot of Tuna caught this week and they have been on opposite ends of the Keys mixed with a few Bonito.

Key West Fishing Report

INSHORE – Flats anglers travelling to the middle Keys and west were welcomed with hungry Permit and Bonefish. King Mackerel were being caught in as little as 10 to 15 feet of water near Big Pine Key. Most of the Kings were taken while drifting live Pinfish. Things got tougher as you neared Florida’s southern mainland. Wind direction and water color saw tough fishing for multiple boats out of Flamingo. Bait wasn’t overly difficult to find, a few mile run towards the cleaner gulf water was the key to finding Pilchards. The big Snook towards the glades got a little hard to locate, but at least there were some hungry seatrout on most days.

OFFSHORE – There has been a decent Blackfin Tuna bite in the Keys as everyone from Key Largo to Key West managed a few good trips. Most of the hookups were a result of trolling Cedar Plugs over the numerous reefs during late afternoons. There were even a few Bluefin Tuna that buzzed past Key Largo and spooled a few anglers. Snapper fishing the reefs stayed strong on the Atlantic side while the gulf saw some Cobia on Rays in 12 feet of water.

Key West Fishing Report

INSHORE – Despite the fronts moving through this week there were still a handful of diehard anglers heading out to fish inshore. There is a variety of fish turning up this week. Mangrove Snapper has provided the most consistent bite from Key Largo to Big Pine as they hold up along bridges and structure. Where you find Snapper you will usually hook a Jack Crevalle or two. Unsurprisingly a handful of Barracuda have shown up in the same areas.
Red Drum and Spotted Seatrout have been sporadic at best. In Key Largo the Trout have been a bit more consistent on Shrimp under a cork however they seem to dissipate as we move towards Islamorada. Bait is beginning to move back in. If you are looking to catch your own you should have no shortage, especially towards Key West.

OFFSHORE – Blackfin Tuna are consistently turning up offshore this week from Islamorada to Key West. Anglers are making their way out to the deep water for a spectacular night bite. Good sized fish to 20 pounds have been steadily caught so far.
On the wrecks and reefs the Snapper bite has been off the hook! We are seeing a nice variety with a prominent bite of Muttons. Anglers are having no trouble at all snagging a few keeper sizes. Amberjack and Porgy are mixed in.
We are beginning to see King Mackerel arrive in the area from Key Largo to Key West. They are a bit more scattered throughout the offshore with the occasional Bonito and Wahoo swimming with them. Anglers fast trolling using heavy rigged lures in black/red or black/purple should find success.
Dolphin have provided a sporadic bite ranging anywhere from approximately 200-300 feet of water. Live bait has been the ticket to catch them.

Key West Fishing Report

INSHORE – Despite some wind, the warmer than usual February temperatures are welcomed by backcountry anglers as the Tarpon have already begun to turn on. Snook, Mangrove Snapper, and Redfish have been fishing well from the Eastern Keys to Islamorada. Some particularly big Seatrout have been caught from Big Pine to Sugarloaf Key. Bahia Honda is thick with Blacktip Sharks. There has also been a great nighttime Tarpon bite in the same area.


OFFSHORE – Patch reef fishing all along the Keys has been steady for Yellowtail, Mangroves, and Muttons as well. Towards Key West there have been good amounts of Spanish and King Mackerel working the reefs. Big Sharks have been turning up off of Key West as well. Some of the offshore boats have had some good Blackfin Tuna fishing in the late afternoons over wrecks. While fishing the wrecks in the middle Keys anglers have been hooking up to some big King Mackerel. Sailfish have been quiet this week with Islamorada being an exception. There were some good Sailfish and Wahoo caught in deeper water.

Key West Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – There have been a few Tuna (Tuna, Blackfin) biting late in the day off of Key West. Reef action has been decent for Barracuda (Barracuda, Great), Mackerel (Mackerel, Cero) and the occasional Mutton (Snapper, Mutton). There were a few Sails on the reef edge earlier in the week but they have slowed down. Kings (Mackerel, King) are being caught in the gulf.

Key West Fishing Report

INSHORE – Permit are tailing in the shallows this week and the bite has been consistent. They are moving out to the deeper water to feed. Moving to the flats we are seeing a good number of Jacks (Jack, Crevalle) putting up a good fight. They are up to 20 lbs so far. Throughout the backcountry we are finding some HUGE Snapper (Snapper, Gray) holding up on structures such as dead trees and mangrove ledges. The best time to head out is when you can find a good, strong current. Shrimp or medium sized Pinfish are your best baits. Live Pilchards are a good alternative. In terms of artificials Chartreuse has been the most productive color. Nearshore with all of the recent wind and drop in water temperature we are finally seeing the Barracuda (Barracuda, Great) turn on. Tube Lures are doing well to hook them as long as you keep it below the surface. They are a bit less skittish now that the wind has picked up so you can get closer to catch them. OFFSHORE – Tuna (Tuna, Blackfin) continue to bite well offshore this week. Sailfish (Billfish – Sailfish) are beginning to move in. The windy days are producing better using live bait on a kite. Closer in the Mackerel (Mackerel, Spanish & Mackerel, King) are steady. Bait is being pushed towards the reef line so the fish are following it. On the bottom we are seeing Snapper (Snapper, Yellowtail) chasing them as well. Search from 60 ft out to 100 ft.

INSHORE – Snapper (Snapper, Gray), Shark, Mackerel (Mackerel, Spanish) and Jacks (Jack, Crevalle) are turning up in the backcountry. Grouper (Grouper, Black & Grouper, Gag) are being caught but keep in mind that some Grouper are closed and must be released. INSHORE – Shark, Snapper (Snapper, Gray) and Barracuda (Barracuda, Great) are biting well this week. Search structure and rock piles to find them. OFFSHORE – Tuna (Tuna, Blackfin), Wahoo and Sailfish (Billfish – Sailfish) are doing well. Kingfish (Mackerel, King) are also productive. They are at the edge of the stream outside the reef. Trolling Ballyhoo has been productive for us.

BAIT REPORT – Ballyhoo have been really tough to find on the reefs. You’re best to buy some because you may not be able to catch some on the way offshore.

Key West Fishing Report

INSHORE – The weather has been hit or miss as of late. The upcoming cold front is expected to slow things down while we kick off the new year. Bonefish are scattered about but can mostly be found to the West. If the temperature heats up a bit you can also still find some Permits on the flats around midday. Rays and Jacks (Jack, Crevalle) will be mixed in. The Jacks usually put up a good fight. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Barracuda (Barracuda, Great) are biting as well this week. You can find them to the East. Muddy areas seem to be more productive. You may find a few Jacks in here as well. Watch out for the Sharks that may take your lures, bait or fish. Snapper (Snapper, Gray) are being caught easily. Search the basins while drifting the backcountry and ledges to find them. Thanks for another great year anglers! OFFSHORE – Anglers heading out to the nearshore reefs in 40-60 ft can expect to pick up a few Yellowtail (Snapper, Yellowtail) this week. As bait is moving offshore with the Winter patterns we expect the Tuna (Tuna, Blackfin) bite to increase. They are schooled up in large numbers. Fresh, live bait is your best bet. Wahoo and Kingfish (Mackerel, King) are also scattered offshore. They are loving topwater plugs. You don’t have much time left to take advantage of the Grouper (Grouper, Black) bite before it closes. Anglers are jigging with live bait or cut bait to find them.

Key West Fishing Report

INSHORE – Mallory Square has been great for anglers fishing Mangroves (Snapper, Gray) using live Shrimp off the bottom. Everything lightweight will work well. Small hooks or jigheads are best. You can fish them all day until the sun goes down. White Street Pier is producing Redfish (Drum, Red) and Snook (Snook, Common) at night. Swimbaits or Rapala Bait Balls or Vudu Shrimp are working well to hook them. The falling tide in the evening is best. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below for additional tips and tricks!

OFFSHORE – The Tuna (Tuna, Blackfin) bite has been the hot ticket this past week. They are in close, boiling at the top around the sub area. Ballyhoo with a dark Squid on it or lures in Purple or Black are most productive. Head out early in the morning or late in the afternoon. There are rumours of a few Yellowfin (Tuna, Yellowfin) being caught as well. Wahoo are steady. Drop down while trolling to 30-50 ft using black or purple lures. Marlin (Billfish – Marlin, White) have been caught in roughly 700 ft of water. Mahi (Dolphin) are picking up in the deep water around 500-850ft. The Wrecks are also productive and the reefs are holding Snapper (Snapper, Gray), Porgy (Scup) and Grouper (Grouper, Red & Grouper, Black).

Key West Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – The focus has been on Tuna (Tuna, Blackfin) this week. Live Pilchards on the wrecks will work well. Squid Skirts on the troll will find the smaller fish. Search 200-300 ft of water where the birds are working. Wahoo are around there as well. Slow troll with live Speedos or Bluerunners on a treble hook rig. They have been hitting this rig like crazy. If you prefer trolling, you can still catch a few high speed trolling. On the reefs and wrecks we are seeing a consistent Snapper (Snapper, Yellowtail & Snapper, Mutton) bite. The Patch reefs are also great for Lane Snapper (Snapper, Lane) and smaller Muttons. The Grouper (Grouper, Black) are a bit hit or miss with the warm water although they are beginning to show up. A few Sails (Billfish – Sailfish) are out there. They haven’t heated up yet but anglers are finding a few on the troll.

INSHORE – Anglers are mostly targeting Snapper (Snapper, Gray & Snapper, Yellowtail & Snapper, Mutton), Shark and Barracuda (Barracuda, Great) in close. INSHORE – Hello Anglers! For the upcoming week, we are going to be dealing with some cooler weather and stronger winds. The cold front that will be moving in will be making it pretty touch on the flats with winds 21-24 mph and temps dipping into the 60’s. The autumn Keys’ highs have still been in the upper 70’s and the fishing has been very good, but the numbers of Bonefish have started to decline due to the cooler fall temperatures.Anglers have still been finding Permit out to the West of the island on some of the larger flats. In addition, there have been a multitude of Speckled Trout (Seatrout, Spotted), Ladyfish, Jacks (Jack, Crevalle), Black Tipped Shark (Shark, Blacktip), and Barracudas (Barracuda, Great) caught on grass flats in about 6 foot of water. OFFSHORE – The offshore bite has been good for those who venture out in the windy seas the past week. Captains have continued to hammer the large Yellowtail Snapper (Snapper, Yellowtail) on the reef. Plus, there are still been lots of Tuna (Tuna, Blackfin) caught chumming with live Pilchards in approximately 200-300 feet. Also, the Sailfish (Billfish – Sailfish) have started showing up around the color change in about 50 feet of water. The Sails have primarily been feeding on Ballyhoo, which are extremely plentiful around the reef during the fall. INSHORE – It’s been windy the past few days so many anglers are staying in. Permit and Bonefish were caught before the weather system moved in. Tarpon were hot. INSHORE – Things have been a bit slow this week. The main bite for anglers has been Tarpon. We hope to see a nice variety of fish turn up soon however the better bite has come from the offshore this week.

OFFSHORE – Deep dropping offshore has been great. Anglers are targeting Grouper (Grouper, Yellowedge & Grouper, Snowy) and Tilefish (Tilefish, Sand) around 500 ft. A Swordfish (Billfish – Swordfish) has been caught recently along with a few Sails (Billfish – Sailfish). Even the Snapper (Snapper, Gray) have been slow. INSHORE – The Tarpon are biting well on the incoming tide. Shrimp has worked well to hook them. Big Mangrove Snapper (Snapper, Gray), Sharks (Shark, Bull & Shark, Blacktip) and Barracuda (Barracuda, Great) have been caught as well. Permit have been eating Crabs as well.

INSHORE – This week there have been a lot of Tarpon, Mangrove Snappers (Snapper, Gray) and large Barracudas (Barracuda, Great). There have also been large Sharks in the area and you can catch them if you’re willing to put in the time. All of the larger fish are very close to shore, only about 5-10 minutes away.

OFFSHORE – The Dolphin fishing had been tough but it is starting to pick up for us and we’re pulling ballyhoo on the 3/4 day trips. The longer trips give us enough time to get everyone on the fish.

INSHORE – Recently we are seeing some great bottom fishing producing nice Mutton Snapper (Snapper, Mutton), Grouper (Grouper, Black & Grouper, Gag), Sharks (Shark, Lemon & Shark, Sandbar) and Yellowtail (Snapper, Yellowtail). Live Pinfish and fresh Bonito Strips are working well to hook everything. Everything is biting on the reefs in roughly 100 ft of water and farther.

INSHORE – There have been quite a few Snapper (Snapper, Gray & Snapper, Yellowtail) moving through under the docks this week. Tarpon are just beginning to move through this week. When we see some nice calm weather we will see a more active bite. We expect to see this improve soon.

OFFSHORE – It has been a bit windy in this area as of late and it has been a bit difficult to get out so far this week. Anglers that have made it on the water are seeing Sails (Billfish – Sailfish) on live bait. They are starting to move through. The closer reefs are holding some good Kings (Mackerel, King) that are scattered all throughout the deeper wrecks, reefs and bars too.

INSHORE – There are Snapper (Snapper, Yellowtail), Grunts (Grunt, White) and Grouper (Grouper, Gag) throughout the reef this week. There are also Barracuda, Great and Mackerel Spanish in this area as well.

OFFSHORE – The water is a bit tough today but there are some Shark, Blacktip. There are some scattered Wahoo as well. The Kings (Mackerel, King) are all throughout the gulf as well this week. INSHORE – The inshore anglers are catching Snapper (Snapper, Mutton), Cobia and Sharks (Shark, Bonnethead & Shark, Blacktip). Tarpon are also running the channels and anglers are enjoying catching them. Anchoring up in the channels and around the rock piles has been the best way to find them. INSHORE – When there is some warm water anglers are catching some nice Tarpon. Wait for the South East breeze and you will find them. Big Sharks (Shark, Bonnethead), Snapper (Snapper, Gray & Snapper, Mutton), Mackerel (Mackerel, Spanish) and Barracuda (Barracuda, Great) are swimming the backwater. There is quite a bit of action throughout the inshore this week.

OFFSHORE – The Sails (Billfish – Sailfish) have been hot in this area as of late. There has also been a great Tuna (Tuna, Bluefin) bite throughout the afternoon. We have also seen some Kings (Mackerel, King) show up lately too. They are decent sizes so far. Plenty of Bonito, Little Tunny have been swimming along with them. This is expected to continue through the weekend. Numbers and sizes should be increasing as the Spring pattern sets in.

INSHORE – The fishing really depends on the day as of late. It’s cold and windy. The Sharks (Shark, Bull & Shark, Bonnethead) have been a little spotty. There are not many fish swimming the inshore this week so far.

OFFSHORE – When it has been calm the afternoon Tuna, Blackfin bite has been hot. The Snapper, Yellowtail and Snapper, Mutton continue to do well on the reef when you can get anchored up. Anglers just have to wait for a break in the weather.

OFFSHORE – There has been a lot of anglers wreck fishing in roughly 200 ft of water and they are catching Snapper, Mutton up to 19 lbs. There are some huge Sharks (Shark, H.H. – Great) being release as well. Grouper, Goliath have turned up as well in great sizes so far this week. Snapper, Yellowtail are also on the reef and the sizes and bite are consistent. The weather has been spotty however when it’s nice anglers are trolling for Wahoo using Bonito. The weather for the weekend does not look great so make sure you head out and take advantage of the hot bite while you can!

Key West Fishing Report

INSHORE – The reefs to the South of the Islands have Snapper (Snapper, Mutton & Snapper, Gray) swimming the area along with Mackerel, Spanish. Sharks (Shark, H.H. Great, Shark, Tiger & Shark, Bull) are turning up in huge sizes so far this week. They are a lot of fun for angler to catch, especially with the sizes that are turning up.

OFFSHORE – There are quite a few different fish swimming the offshore this week. Kings (Mackerel, King) are holding up in the deeper water along with Tuna, Blackfin which are being caught in the late evening and afternoon bite. There are a few Sails (Billfish – Sailfish) in the same area as well however the bite is not as consistent. From 300-400 ft there is a solid Dolphin bite if you search the shoestring weedlines. They offshore action is not hot however it is productive if you are persistent. The wind, weeds and mud have a lot of spots turned up so finding the fish is the difficult part. Using live bait such as Ballyhoo or Pilchards will work extremely well as their scent will attract the fish even if the mud and weeds have the fish hidden from sight.

BAIT REPORT – Ballyhoo and Pilchards are running the reefs this week and working well for offshore bait.

OFFSHORE – The Snapper, Yellowtail was biting well until the recent front where there have not been anglers heading out to the water. The weather has been so up and down the water has not had time to settle for anglers to find fish. OFFSHORE – Fishing has been good so far this week. The reefs are holding Grouper for catch and release. (Grouper, Black & Grouper, Red & Grouper, Gag) Are all closed right now. Snapper, Yellowtail and Snapper, Mutton are showing up in big schools. Anglers are hitting their limits on both Snapper on the reef. Wahoo are turning up from 30-40 lbs so they are doing well too. There have been no reports so far of Sails (Billfish – Sailfish) however we hope to see some show up by the weekend.

OFFSHORE – There have been some huge catches of Wahoo this week turning up around 80 lbs! They are in anywhere from 200-300 ft of water and the bite is pretty frequent. There are also reports of Barracuda, Great in the deep water as well as the flats. Their sizes have been big as well. A few Mahi (Dolphin) have been reported however they are scattered and the bite is not consistent. Snapper, Yellowtail have been steady in flag sizes however there are no reports of Snapper, Gray or Sailfish (Billfish – Sailfish) so far this week.

Key West Fishing Report

INSHORE – There is a solid bite through the inshore this week. Snapper (Snapper, Mutton & Snapper, Gray & Snapper, Yellowtail) have all moved in close this week and are all throughout the channel. There have also been reports of Porgy and Grouper, Gag along the bottom inshore as well. Anglers looking for some quick, fun catches can target Sharks (Shark, H.H – Smooth & Shark, Black Tip & Shark, Tiger) that are biting on chunks of Bonito. They are always an exciting and easy catch.

OFFSHORE – Anglers have been doing extremely well from 250-300 ft of water. There are tons of Dolphin, Wahoo and Billfish – Sailfish to be found in this area. They are, of course, loving Ballyhoo. There are also reports of Mackerel, King on the reefs as well. The King bite is not as frequent but are there for anglers who put their time in.

BAIT REPORT – The water has been muddy and dirty this week so bait has been difficult to find. We expect to see some running once things clear up.

OFFSHORE – The Mahi (Dolphin) are biting well this week along with some Tuna, Blackfin. The hard winds have scattered them out recently however we expect the bite to continue when conditions lie down. Key West Fishing Report

INSHORE – Snook, Common and Reds (Drum, Red) are turning up in the West areas. There are also some Permit and Bonefish swimming. Most of the keys fish are migrating down to find warmer water at this point so the bite inshore has become quite spotty.

OFFSHORE – There is a great afternoon Tuna, Blackfin bite in this area lately. Anglers are throwing live Pilchards to hook them and having no problem with this. The Sails (Billfish – Sailfish) have finally shown up however they are still fairly small sized. Live bait has been working best for them as well. Wahoo are spotty here and there with a few Mahi (Dolphin) turning up sporadically. There are Grouper (Grouper, Red & Grouper, Black) on the shallower reefs of the nearshore along with some Kings (Mackerel, King) in good sizes and Cobia up in the backcountry and the gulf.

BAIT REPORT – Threadfins are plentiful in the harbor while there are also some Pilchards swimming with them working great in the offshore.

INSHORE – The main bite has been offshore in the area this week. Anglers have been using live bait for Tuna, Blackfin coming up in great sizes so far. The water temperature is cooling off however it is still warm for this time of year. Grouper, Gag are still doing well and anglers are stocking up as they are only open a few more weeks. There have not been many reports of Sails (Billfish – Sailfish) this week however there are still Kings (Mackerel, King) swimming with some Wahoo. INSHORE – There has not been much action from the inshore this week. Snapper, Gray have been biting however there have not been any reports of Tarpon, Sharks or Barracuda yet this week. Any anglers deciding to head out for the weekend can always consult our Tips feature which provides additional information and suggestions that can help improve the catch.

OFFSHORE – The conditions have been windy but despite this anglers have managed to make it to the offshore. The Tuna, Blackfin have had a late afternoon bite on dark colored artificials or live Ballyhoo. Anglers are finding the most productivity while slow trolling. There are also reports coming in of Mahi (Dolphin) and Sails (Bilfish – Sailfish) off the reef at 150 ft. Light colored artificials are working best for them. There have been a few spotty reports of Wahoo however this is beginning to die down. Anglers are still down rigging with dark lures on a planer for them. Kings (Mackerel, King) and Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) have also been caught offshore. There are a ton of options for anglers this week.

Key West Fishing Report

INSHORE – The backcountry has been holding some great sizes of Snapper (Snapper, Gray) as well as some Tarpon that were swimming until the cold front. Sharks (Shark, Lemon & Shark, Spinner & Shark, Bonnethead), Barracuda, Great and Permit have all been swimming the nearshore in the sponge beds. They have been near the top in the warm water that is flowing off the flats.

OFFSHORE – The Wahoo, Dolphin and Billfish-Sailfish bite has been hot lately. This is subject to change due to the cold front moving in however as of the past week they have been on fire. All three species are expected to move in towards the reefs at 35-40 ft of water once the cooler weather patterns arrive. They are all loving Ballyhoo this week which happens to be running as well.

INSHORE – The wind has been no less than unbearable in the area this week. There have been no reports of anglers heading out on the water both inshore and offshore. The Sharks (Shark, Lemon & Shark, Spinner & Shark, Bonnethead) that were active last week have been deterred by the wind. Our sources hope this bite continues once the weather lies down, but we will have to wait and see.

INSHORE – There is not a lot of action happening inshore at this time. Most anglers are awaiting cooler temperatures. Anyone who has headed out has seen a lot of sharks (Shark, Lemon & Shark, Spinner & Shark, Bonnethead) with Lemons being the most prominent. The bite is expected to improve and create more variety once the weather cools down.

OFFSHORE – Fishing conditions are absolutely beautiful in this area as of late. The wind has died down and the current has picked back up. The bite has been great as well. Dolphin are hitting the Ballyhoo with light skirts or lures around 300 – 1200 ft out. The farther out anglers go, the larger the fish tend to be. The bottom is host to mainly Snapper, Yellowtail and a few Snapper, Gray. They are chasing after the cut Squid or silversides on a white jighead. They will even hit Ballyhoo now and then. Anglers can find them right on the reefs anywhere between 60 – 120 ft. They’ve moved in from last week. Grouper, Red have been active as well following dropped chunks like Squid, Sardines or Butterfly ballyhoo. There are no shortage of fish here.

INSHORE – There have not been very many reports of inshore fishing at this time however anglers have been out Tarpon fishing without specific results. OFFSHORE – The wrecks have been producing some good fish as of late. Snapper, Mutton has been showing up using Bonita strips. They are biting at the 115 to 220 mark on the wrecks. Anglers are also using a cast net to catch Ballyhoo after chumming them up. Snapper, Yellowtail have been eating these up. When the weather cools down anglers expect an increased Grouper (Grouper, Red & Grouper, Black) bite on the reefs.

Key West Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Offshore fishing has had a lot of action recently. Sailfish (Billfish – Sailfish), Wahoo and even a few Tunas (Tuna, Yellowfin & Tuna, Blackfin) have had a good bite. There have been reports of a couple of Dolphin although they are beginning to slow down. Due to the temperature cooling down the fish are starting to make their way in closer and you can find them right off the reefs, not many are left in the deeper water. Ballyhoo are coming through and can be caught on the reefs as well using a sabiki rod. They are great bait and anglers are high speed trolling for all of the offshore fish with this. Our sources have also seen Snapper (Snapper, Yellowtail & Snapper, Mutton) as well as Grouper (Grouper, Black & Grouper, Red) which they are chumming for.

INSHORE – The fish have been a little more spotty in this area. The flats are filled with a mixed bag of fish. Snapper (Snapper, Gray), Barracuda (Barracuda, Great), Bonefish and Tarpon on the falling tide have been a majority of the catch the past few days. If you are throwing a live Pilchard, dead Pilchard or anything that looks like a Pilchard you are likely to get bit.

Key West Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – The wind seems to be blowing from every direction out here. We are seeing 6-10 ft waves and most anglers aren’t risking the trip. Thursday has brought a bit calmer winds so it was the first chance for anglers to really have a chance. We have previously had Mahi Mahi and Blue Marlin reported offshore and anticipate similar results for the upcoming weekend. There has even been some Sailfish hooked while pulling spreads so keep that in mind if you head out in the, hopefully, nicer weather this weekend.

INSHORE – Even when anchored you are still going to want to hang onto something! 30 knot winds have been hitting the beaches and keys. Fishing from the shore hasn’t been much better than offshore. You may find a few sheltered spots depending on which side of the island you are on but you’ll definitely have to do some searching. Expectation is for the wind to die down by Thursday so the weekend should provide some better bites. Yellowtail Snapper and Grouper have had steady results and we do not anticipate any changes going forward, should the weather accommodate.

BAIT REPORT – If you decide to seek out some bait you will have the whole beach to yourself. There have been few anglers on the beaches so there are no baits to report at this time. INSHORE – Fishing in the Keys during September is late Summer flats fishing at its best. There are Bonefish, Permit and resident Tarpon, Shark, Barracuda, and Jacks. We usually start early, sometime between 7 am and 8 am to take advantage of the cooled off early morning waters. Here are some recent catches! This past Tarpon Season was a gas! Some really great moments!! Up close and personal with MR. SILVER KING!The GREEN FLASH OF SUNRISE brought us great luck this past Tarpon Season…Here was a nice one…The past few weeks have seen a strong migration of Tarpon rolling into the Flats for the Palalo Worm hatch. Permit were also Marching everywhere! The light and variable winds winds were prevailing and the water temps increased to the mid 80’s. We were hooking big Tarpon daily. Sight casting to Tarpon on the basin flats in May and June is outstanding! Here is another Tarpon caught in this environment…Resident baby Tarpon have also been on the line… Permit are here and there if you get that lucky!!!We have just returned from our annual trek to Turneffe Flats, Belize and I am happy to report that we had great weather and an outstanding week of flats fishing! Tarpon Bonefish and Permit.

THE BIG THREE were caught during our mid July “Grand Slam” week at Turneffe Flats, Belize. Our 2016 dates are July 9- July 16, 2016! And we already have 6 anglers booked into this tropical paradise.

Key West Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – As we spoke with Captain Moe the weather wasn’t being very pretty, but the past few days have fished well for them. Captain Moe says the fishing has, in fact, been fantastic. They have been loading up on Dolphin. The run from Key West is around 16 miles to hit that 700 or 800 foot depth. There’s been some sailfish caught, a Marlin, and the Tuna are starting to bite again. The full moon has made for some really good Wahoo fishing as well. Trollin’ Ballyhoo, when you can get them, has been the best bait.

INSHORE – There haven’t been too many people fishing the shores here. There’s been some great Tarpon fishing in the evenings. Chum them up, teach them how to eat then feed them a hook. The reefs just offshore have been fishing well and holding Grouper, Mangrove Snapper, and the odd Barracuda will show up.

OFFSHORE: While the Wahoo are plentiful this time of year, the Sailfish and Marlin are beginning to show up with most anglers trolling blue and whites or Ballyhoo. Some Blackfin Tuna are also beginning to heat up with the same bait. The water has warmed up quite a bit, so most boats are heading out to the deeper water. Around the reefs, anglers are catching Snapper, Grouper, and a variety of smaller tropical fish.

INSHORE: Most anglers are fishing from the many bridges in the Keys and they are catching smaller fish including Snapper, Tarpon and Yellowfin using Shrimp, Pilchards and minnows. Bait is plentiful for those who like to net their own, but they usually get reports from some of the charter captains who see the bait on their way out and back into the docks.

Key West Fishing Report

OFFSHORE: Fishing has been rather spotty the last few days. Two days ago the fish were at 700 feet, and now they are at 1000 plus. Most anglers are going after the mahi and wahoo in 700 -1200 feet of water trolling at about 7 knots with ballyhoo with a light colored skirt and green, blue and pink lures. Reef anglers are chumming and then anchoring out to fish the drop off. Ballyhoo, blue runners and pinfish are available for catching if you know where these baitfish hang out or if you can see them. Sometimes, chumming will bring them closer for netting.

INSHORE: Pier anglers are getting grouper, mangrove snapper, yellowtails, tarpon, jacks, barracuda, sharks, and any mixture of tropical fish. Live shrimp and frozen shrimp or squid are what the pier anglers are mostly using. Remember that these are smaller fish and not the big ones that anglers are catching offshore. And while pier anglers are not “killing” it out there, they are managing to pull in a pretty good variety of fish. Forrest Gump might say that fishing off the piers in Key West is like opening a box of candy; you never know what you’ll get!

Key West Fishing Report

Offshore: The Mahi bite has been very consistent, along with wahoo and marlin beginning at 300 and extending to the wall. Again, the snapper bite has been really good all year round, but with grouper, it really depends on where they are on any given day. At best, they are intermittent. Chum and cut ballyhoo are working best on the bottom, along with squid. Most anglers are using 8 to 10 ounce weights on a Carolina rig and 8 or 9 off a treble hook.

Inshore: Key West offers a pretty good variety of smaller fish along the shore, including snapper, grouper, shark, and barracuda. Tarpon are hanging around on the flats. Ballyhoo bait fish are out there, but difficult to catch unless there is someone along who knows where they hang out.

Key West Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Ryan over at Key West Bait & Tackle let me know that the reef is good right now – the snapper bite is steady and the last few weeks it was pretty spotty, same with the Grouper. While the bottom fishing heats up, the trolling is still pretty good if you are going to target Dolphin, but it isn’t anything crazy. Most of the guys who are trolling for Tuna and catching anything have been buying lottery tickets – because even they know they just got lucky. The Dolphin are between 300-900 feet, with some further out. Ryan has heard most of the big ones being caught between 400-600 feet. Ballyhoo is still the best bait, but if you can go with the smaller Ballyhoo, even elephants eat peanuts and you can be sure that big fish eat little fish no matter how little they are.

INSHORE – Flat fishing has been good, both the Bonefish and Permit are strong right now. The Permit is a bit harder to find, but the Bonefish are moving around pretty much everywhere. Take live shrimp and then break them up and chum with them towards the channels and that should draw a good deal of fish out. Alot of the guys who are targeting Bonefish are anchoring on the flat and chumming too. Shrimp are your bait of choice for the Bonefish and a good Shrimp chum slick is going to send them running at you. Permit prefer crab, and if you want to target them arm yourself accordingly.

BAIT REPORT – Ballyhoo are around but they are scarce, travelling in pods of 5-8. If you want to target some there has been reports of them out near Boca Grande. Pinfish are west of the bay, in towards the lakes.

OFFSHORE – Captain Dan at the Key West Fishing Connection reports that trolling has been slow recently so he has taken up bottom fishing. The reefs, wrecks, and other structures are full of Yellowfin, Grouper, and Jacks. He likes to drop down some live Pinfish – that usually gets there attention. He also likes to switch it up and use fresh strips of Bonita and chunks of Speedo and Goggleye. You can find good fishing 7-8 miles out and further.

INSHORE – The Tarpon fishing has started to tail off. As the water gets warmer and warmer more and more Tarpon will be leaving for cooler water. There are going to be your resident Tarpon that stick around all year long, but keep your eye out for other species that start to appear around now. The Mangrove and Yellowtail Snapper are poking up so tailor your kit accordingly.

BAIT REPORT – Right now there is a little bit of bait but not that much. There are Pinfish and Ballyhoo offshore but the warm water has been driving them out – and the bigger fish have been following.

OFFSHORE: Offshore you’ll be trolling for Dolphin and Wahoo. As usual they love Ballyhoo to troll with that. If you’d rather bottom fish you’ll be finding Grouper and Snapper. They are biting well on live Shrimp or Pinfish and cut Squid so try dropping those for bottom fishing success.

INSHORE: Inshore you’re going to want to fish the grass flats. There you’ll find lots of Tarpon and Bonefish. They are taking well to live Crab and Pinfish. 

BAIT: There are lots of Pinfish around which you can sabiki up. They are so thick you probably won’t even need to bait.

Key West Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Mahi Mahi are out there if you are in the mood for some trolling. They love Ballyhoo so you’ll want to troll that. Some people like to use a skirt with that. They are anywhere between 500 and 1000 feet. If bottom fishing is more your style you’ll be fishing for Snapper and Grouper.For this you’ll have a couple of really good options for bait especially if you’re fishing around structure. Try cut Ballyhoo, Threadfins, or Shrimp.

INSHORE – Inshore you’re going to find some smaller stuff. There are lots of Grouper, Snapper, Tarpon and Tropical Fish. You’re going to want to use Squid or Shrimp on a light jig head. There are lot of fish around the bridges. Remember to always fish when the water is moving and not to fish the slack tide.

BAIT REPORT – Chum with baitfish to bring them up to the top. You’ll find Bluerunners and Pinfish and a few Threadfins. You’ll also find some Ballyhoo around the reef.

Key West Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – There is a nice Wahoo bite right now. The bigger moon generally means more Wahoo. A lot of the Wahoo Captain Jeremy Edwards at Meridian Charters has been catching have been up in the 35 pound range. For Wahoo use a deep troll and Sea Witches. They have also been responding to high speed trolling anything over 12 or 13 knots! Rig extra heavy for that though with aircraft cable and heavy leads. Purple and Black Mold Craft artificials have been working well.There are also some small Dolphin around. Though if you have luck on your side you can also catch some bigger fish if you get to the weedline or floating debris first. There have been several Mako Sharks over the last few weeks. The Billfish, Marlin and Sailfish are all slow right now. Dolphin have been biting on trolled Ballyhoo with green and chartreuse skirts. Flat headed skirts create turbulence in the water on a flat day.

INSHORE – Capt. Moe. has been catching Snapper and Sharks though nothing compares to the phenomenal Tarpon bite. There has also been a hot bit on some HUGE Mangrove Snappers. Captain Moe makes use of Shrimp Boat trash like Mahara. He catches on any tide but he is a pro. He recommends sticking to what you know, moving water is always best.

BAIT REPORT – Ballyhoo aren’t particularly thick but you will find some on certain areas of the reefs. There are also a decent amount of Speedos coming up in chum slicks on the reef.
